On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me…
Two texting couple and a fluttering love story.
YJ: How is it that he hasn’t texted or called even once all day? (Unnie walks in) Unnie, it’s even hard to hear WooHyun’s voice once a day.
Unnie: You’re like that too when you’re filming. Just be understanding.
YJ: At this rate, when I go abroad, we’ll forget each other. And what if our feelings go cold?
Unnie: If you have no trust and if your feelings can cool like that, you shouldn’t be getting married. It’s not too late yet. Think clearly and then decide.
She’s playing devil’s advocate. But she’s 100% right. If their feelings for each other can’t survive a year apart, then why marry? But good things can be learned from a long-distance relationship as she soon will learn.
YJ: How annoying. I’m just saying it and you say it like that?
Meaning, she’s just venting and whining. “What if our feelings go cold?” is a rhetorical question and isn’t intended to be taken seriously.
Unnie: But I mean it. (standing up to leave)
YJ: What’s wrong?!! I already feel like WooHyun is being so indifferent, leaving all the wedding preparations to me. I’m already upset!
She’s annoyed with her Unnie for agitating her further. She’s already upset that WooHyun isn’t returning her calls and stressed out that she’s doing all the preparation and now, Unnie dumps this guilt-trip/bridal jitters to shake her up.
YJ: Fine, let’s call again. (and call doesn’t go through again)
Meanwhile, he’s about to adjourn his meeting. He checks his phone right away and sees 5 missed calls from “A good person.” And the first thought on his mind was, “She must feel disappointed and worried.”
Awwww… that’s heart-fluttering. He put himself in her shoes right away and understood how she felt.
The following morning, YJ is up bright and early, dancing while she preps breakfast.
YJ: Good morning!
Unnie: You were sighing so much in your sleep last night. Why are you suddenly in such a good mood?
YJ: Want to hear it? (and she reads her text with feelings) “YooJung-ssi, I was in meetings all day and couldn’t contact you. I want to run to you right away to see you. But I’ll try to endure it since you might be asleep.”
Unnie: So your huge pout went in and singing just came out?
YJ: Well, that’s how dating is. I already set everything up. Come eat.
And this is the fun of texting and long-distance relationships.
It’s obvious that WH and YJ’s separation is unlike other kdramas. In other kdramas, when the couple separate, they terminate contact which I find troubling and bothersome. Like how can they profess to love each other, and just cut off each other like that? So cold-blooded.
In Fluttering Alert romcom, although they’re apart, they communicate daily.
Here, for instance, WooHyun told her exactly what she wanted to hear: that she wasn’t being ignored, that he wanted to be at her side, too, right at that very moment, but he had to bear it a bit longer because she was already sleeping.
And do you recall too when he texted her at the hospital as soon as Unnie woke up from her surgery? Even back then, he already chose his words wisely.
He texted, “You’ve had a hard time, haven’t you? CEO Han will be all right now. There have been a lot of incidents, but I hope you don’t misunderstand. Kang Hye Joo and I have absolutely no relationship. That day, too, I was there to meet you. (I couldn’t end it like this.) (But…you’re having such a hard time because of me.) Be well and hang in there.” He deleted those words in parentheses because he didn’t want to write something that would confuse her more or would need more explanation.
I like it that he gathers his thoughts before sending texts. This practice of thinking before texting is a good habit to learn before marriage. Arguments can have a peaceful resolution if the couple are more aware and thoughtful of each other’s feelings.
So although WooHyun and YooJung won’t have a lot of time to spend talking while they’re apart for a year, they’re learning that the QUALITY of texts, emails and conversations is enough to brighten up their day or calm them at night.
Another thing that they’re learning from their separation is to cherish every moment they spend together. For instance, when he realized that she called him five times, he grinned.
For me, I’m imagining him imagining her fretting and pouting that he didn’t pick up his phone. That was why he grinned — because even he couldn’t see her, he could PICTURE her reaction based on the previous times when he teased her and she sulked prettily. Those little memories of their time stand out for him more. lol.
Moreover, these texts and conversations about ordinary and important things made them focus on … well, ordinary AND important things. This is also healthy in a relationship because when they meet again, they’ve already built a foundation for their married life. They get to discover each other’s quirks before entering into the physical stage of a marital relationship.
For instance in this scene, WooHyun discovers that she’ll call nonstop but won’t leave a message. lol. That’s quirky to me…not leaving a voice mail and just hanging up.
On her part, YooJung discovers that if she doesn’t get a response right away, it’s because he’s occupied with work and is unable to receive her calls. He isn’t ignoring her or “ghosting” and disappearing on her.
Hopefully, too, she’s learned that he’ll initiate conversation by text and that he’s more open with his emotions when texting. WooHyun’s probably too shy and hesitant to tell her face-to-face, “I want to run to you right away to see you. But I’ll try to endure it since you might be asleep” because this sounds cheesy.
But when texting her, he can say romantic things like that.
That’s why I think this text scene is a good romantic and heart-fluttering moment in Episode 16. It shows how our couple Woohyun and YooJung are already learning to be each other’s emotional support on those days and nights ahead when they cannot be together in person.
Aw, you had me grinning again. I’ve always adored the epistolary elements of their relationship.
I love the most this movie keep going Chun Jung myung !
