Crash Landing on You: Pyo Chi Soo as Boyfriend Material

One thing I like about my blog is that we don’t have to be fangirls. In other forums…cough cough…if you suggest something out of the mainstream, the moderators will be sicced on you for disturbing the peace or for insulting the actors.

Now, here’s @Mae’s interesting perspective on Pyo Chi Su. I thought she raised good points.

Yeah but Pyo Chi Su doesn’t give off Oppa vibe. His looks don’t make the general population hearts’ fluttered. But the man is witty, sincere, loyal (especially the minute he is invested in your cause) and he is fun to be with. He is romantic too without being over the top.
Can you imagine JH having that kind of banter like Chi Su and Seri has or even mundane argument? Toilet seat anyone? My biggest peeve with JH is that this man seems to be too good looking, too Mr Over-achiever, too much of a doormat to Seri. But I am in Kdrama land and I am in Ahjumma age bracket by Korean standard, so I will let this slip. It is good entertainment. But if and when I do watch this drama again together with my daugther when she is older, I would tell her to date a JH but marry a Chi Su. JH has too much emotional baggage and family issues. We marry the family, not just the man.

She also added:

Now this is an opinion of a mom with a daughter. The girly part of me is like oh swoon JH is so sweet. The mom part of me is like *roll eyes* lol. Sorry to bore you @packmule3.

I agree. I think Pyo Chi Soo will make a good boyfriend…even husband material. Here are my reasons.

1. He’s a workhorse.

He said that he didn’t like to go to the picnic because he had laundry to do. But did you notice, he was the one who strained hard to pull the wheelbarrow to the picnic area, held the fishnet when they caught the fish, helped with the crabs, and served the tray?

He was the workhorse of the team.

2. He wrote the poem.

“Farewell Poem for the Woman”

When you hammer a nail, the nail goes into the wall.
When the wind blows, a persimmon falls from the branch.
But this woman does whatever she wants to do.
She didn’t die when we fired a gun at her.
When we criticize her, it doesn’t affect her.
Oh my. What a troublemaker she is.
But as you’re leaving soon, please do me this favor.
Take care. Don’t get hurt.
Live a good life. Don’t forget us.
If you’re exposed, don’t you dare give my name away.

Aside from the witty ending, I like this poem because it tells me something about his views on women. Although he has this outdated notion that women should be biddable and obedient (e.g., hammer the nail and the nail goes through), in reality, he goes along with whatever Seri decides.

He ends up indulging her, too.

That’s why he was upset with JooMook, the drama guy, when Seri started crying at the surprise birthday party.

3. Aegyo doesn’t work on him.

He distrusts Seri because he thinks she’s always trying to pull a fast one on them. Yes, he can look petty at times. But his distrustful nature tells me that he isn’t going to easily succumb to just any lady’s charm, beauty and aegyo.

But he can’t resist alcohol though. He blabbers when he gets drunk. lol.

4. He keeps his real emotions in check.

He’s grumpy NOT because he can’t feel affection… but because he does. He just doesn’t let his sentimental emotions run unchecked.

For instance, he scolded their maknae EunDong because he was worried about him. Then without a second thought, he gave up his shoes for him.

He’s a closet romantic. I believe he memorized the South Korean national anthem because the lyrics about the beauty of their homeland inspired and moved him.

5. He takes care of his personal hygiene.

Nothing can kill attraction like bad hygiene. I like that Pyo Chi Soo appreciates a good body wash and body scrub. He may lack in the looks department but at least he grooms well.

6. He’s a mean street fighter.

He can fight well. And I was impressed that he didn’t flinch when the stick hit his head. Any girl can feel safe with him around.

7. He works hard for his money.

He didn’t complain about delivering all those chicken orders. He must have walked up and down so many stairs that he couldn’t feel his legs anymore.

This tells me that he’ll be a good provider. He won’t let his family starve. He looks reliable…that’s why people entrust him with their cars to valet-park.

8. He’s in charge of his destiny.

He isn’t wishy-washy about his course of action.  When he told JungHyuk to put everything on the line, included them, I fell for him. This means that he’s got JungHyuk’s back.

9. His self-confidence is admirable.

Gutsy.

I like that he’s comfortable in his own (scrubbed) skin.

That tells me won’t be intimidated should he hear other people say that his girlfriend or wife could do better than him. hahaha.

10. Last but not the least, his sense of humor is sexy.

I like their bickering. Their petty squabbles tell me that they’re on the same wavelength. There’s no need for explanation between them since they understand each other’s wit and sarcasm.

Also, they’ve many running jokes together, like eating meat and burying Seri in a river or a mountain. The jokes signify that they’ve a shared history. They tease each other like a long-married couple.

From their first meeting:

To their last goodbye:

It’s their private joke, and theirs alone. Not even JungHyuk teases Seri the way that Chi Soo can.

So yes, these are just ten of Pyo Chi Soo’s qualities that make him a boyfriend material. I’m sure you can come up with more.

  1. He may not be as goodlooking as other JH but he can be charming😝 yes to all your points. And truly i like a man who smells good😁 he seems like an old fashioned conservative romantic type of guy.

  2. Same here!

I also like the way he calls Seri “woman.”

He’s so ornery and set in his ways that it’ll be fun to get him to change a bit. Girls like that challenge. 😂🙂

He’s not handsome like JH but so what? beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  3. Ah! Yes so true the qualities that we so easily over look in a drama, these qualities that we don’t see on the surface and only realise after a good enough interaction with the person. Too bad JH has too many family issues and emotional baggage but Seri has family issues and emotional baggage too and that’s probably why they connected.

To side track a bit, he isn’t the only one who blabbers when he is drunk in the drama but i find this a common thing in almost every drama, someone is bound to get drunk and say the truth unknowingly. I was gonna say, it isn’t quite a quality i personally like but so many main characters do that (JH and Seri didn’t get terribly drunk..they got tipsy)

  4. Umm. Interesting. I love your train of thought but I have to disagree. SEri is “prickly” and distrustful of others generally (see her assistants view of her). This is due to her awful family background and childhood. Pyo is equally prickly and distrustful. I’m thinking he has a similar background. RJH appears to have had an idyllic life up until his brother died and his issues stem entirely from grief. His parents and family situation appears functional, unlike Seri’s.
The blind cannot lead the blind. Pyo cannot help SEri heal. They would bicker til kingdom come. RJH can recover fully from his grief, particularly if and when justice is done. He can lead SEri into a functional family life. She doesn’t know how to do that on her own(see her house decoration- cold and a bit sterile, empty shelves – not a nest). He can make a home for her where she can heal (see him literally filling her shelves- nesting). When a) he handed her the glass of water and told her to calm down and asked her if she was hurt after he saved her by saying she was his fiancée and b) when paragliding off the hill and she apologizes and says she’s grateful and he answers “I know” – both show how he sees through her prickliness (unlike pyo) to her real feelings in a functional supportive way. RJH makes SEri feel understood, safe and cared for – no one else ever has (candle in market scene – he understands her, he listened). Sorry but Pyo is a fun friend. Only RJH can make SEri truly happy.

  5. I was surprised at the negative comments about Seri’s apartment decor. To my mind it is deliberately “off” – lots of money spent but cold – the couch faces only one way (no one on other side to share life with) etc etc, big expanses of emptiness. Like Seri’s life. It’s pathetic in the pathetic fallacy sense- a reflection of her inner self. Lonely. RJH’s home exudes his inner warmth and stability. When we see the home they create together (🤞🏻) (dear writer- make that happen) I bet it will be really warm with chairs positioned for functional family talk/play time. Ditto Seri’s clothes. While beautiful she wears uncomfortable heels and restrictive clothes a lot. But more often than not she seems to change into really comfy clothes when with RJH! RJH is definitely THE man for SEri!

  6. I liked that during the fight he still worried about their maknae (and his height :D)

Chi Soo is a really great character.

I watch more this drama for all the characters than for the love story.

  7. True. He called out to check if the maknae was holding up on his own as he was busily punching a guy, showing that he could multi-task. 😂

I liked that whenever he became emotional and teary-eyed, he would pretend to be a tough guy.

    ChiSoo’s a good guy.

  8. Silent reader here!

Glad that you made a post on Chi Soo – I love that guy! He and Seo Dan’s mom would be amaaaaaaaazingggg together.

  9. 😂 That would be funny, wouldn’t it? I want to see Seo Dan’s mom explain him to her rich friends.

  10. I like Chi Soo because I love banter. He reminds me a lot of someone I worked who had a military background but also a pithy sense of humour. I think he will make a great husband and father, just not for Seri. I can’t see their backgrounds meshing for intellectual and aesthetic reasons.

I do have hope for JH’s reviving sense of humour. I found the scar competition scene hilarious. I thought he was having a go at Seri, who didn’t realise it. He is still thawing out. Less banter, more deadpan. Pity the others arrived when they did.😉

Aside: please could someone with a medical background explain to me why his bullet scar is on his front rather than his back? Did it go through and if so, why didn’t it go into Seri? Or is this just a plot (bullet) hole?

As to JH’s relationship to Kwang Bum, I think they both understand each other and are alike in their reserve. Yes, JH just grunted and bashed him on the arm after the mine disarming incident, but Kwang Bum is his go-to man for situations where reactions and brains are needed.

  11. Scene stealer pyo chi su 🤣😂
This drama wont survive without him in it..
    He is jjang!!!!

  12. Hi.. I’m your silent reader. About Pyo Chi Su, i feels like he is more a brother like with Se Ri. Remember when the duckling sat outside the hospital, he said maybe the blood is not enough so that he want to give her his blood. So sweet Chi Su dongmu.. 😀

  13. What an interesting idea. I do have a daughter and this idea of a future son-in-law swirls in both our heads and we talk of it often. But I don’t know if I would ever want a guy who’d shoot at an unarmed woman to advance his career…plus his jovial reaction in finding out a young woman is found dead and therefore he won’t get into trouble, absolute deal breaker for me. I think being next to JH really kept him in check. So, err, stick-in-the-mud JH is still who I want for baby girl. 🙂

  14. @Smartie and @Fern, just read your responses, totally agree. Can’t see Seri with Chi Su, and yes, JH probably needs help in the sense of humor department. But didn’t he say that he can be good at anything? once he gives himself permission to joke again, would love to see him lighten up fully.

  15. The series would be terribly boring without Chi soo. I always looked forward to seeing him and his group.
