A Piece of Your Mind: Eps 7 to 8 Open Thread

I’m behind with my reviews but go ahead and “spoil” the next episodes for me.

This is where we left off in Episode 6, right?

The cliffhanger was he told her to stay.

Back in Episode 2, she said that if there was one thing that would capture her soul and keep her living well, it would be those words, “Stay with me.” She even gave herself an expiration date: she said she could hold onto it for “three years.”

She’s a smart girl. She admitted that she was the type to go all in. But that doesn’t mean she’s an idiot. She also knows when to pull back and cut her loses. “…about three years.”

I like her for that.

Have fun with this week’s episodes! I should be able to write a review soon.

  1. Waiting…impatiently waiting to watch Ep. 7. Viki English subs are only at 24% as of 12:30pm Monday Pacific Daylight Time. I tried going over to Kissasian, but that site keeps trying to force me to accept apps I don’t want, so I exited.

  2. @Welmaris have you tried myasiantv or www2.watchasian.to? Watchasian usually uploads the raw after midnight and the full subbed by early morning. 🙂

  3. I watched it at kissasian but had to stop a couple of times as it wasn’t loading but that’s probably my ipad. 😊

Poor SW, it’s her parent’s death anniversary and she’s trying hard to face her trauma by going home to their house for the first time since their death. HW’s ‘please stay’ was definitely what she needed because as Eunjoo said, she tends to be suicidal during this time.

I liked that he was there for her the whole time without being physically close to her while she goes through with it. He only showed himself after she turned from looking at her house and played something she recorded for her parents.

Poor HW, he can’t sleep even with fixing/building new furnitures the day before but when SW fell asleep after helping him organise the bed the day after , he had a great sleep in the sofa. Actually both him and SW had great sleep. They didn’t wake up at all in the middle of the night. So at the end of the episode I believe HW thinks that the reason he had a good sleep was because SW and him were in the same house. Hence, he’s ‘can you sleep with me’ question but it’s not what it means. ☺️

I like that they’re trying to get to know each other more but without being too direct about it. HW is changing and how sweet that he practiced a lot for his ‘performance’ just so SW can record him.

Interesting, Eunjoo‘s Homestay was the point of reaction for the new AI that HW built with Power Suit lady’s voice. She said that she used to live there in her twenties. The doctor that’s talking to the AI got shocked.

Something’s up with soup guy as he didn’t go home at the homestay one night. On the preview they broke up.

  4. Thanks, @agdr03. I’ll catch up with you all someday.

    1. Awww… So when he asked of her to “please stay with me,” there was an (implied) reciprocal “I’ll follow you wherever”? I like that. I like that he took the initiative to go with her to her parents’ home.

*Showing initiative* is very much a kdrama expectation of all heroes. All heroes are required to do something for the girl without being told to do so, like JWan’s unexpected arrival at IS’ campsite.

    2. What furniture? Is this the furniture that SW and Jisoo ordered for his empty house?

Does he know that Jisoo had a hand in it? Is he still preoccupied with Jisoo?

    3. What about the husband/depressed pianist? Has he found yet how SW is connected to Jisoo? I recall him recognizing SW’s phone number but I can’t remember now which episode that was. lol. I’ve to start all over again.

    4. Who’s Power Suit? Is this the Patient? She does seem to wear ill-fitting suits all the time doesn’t she? Did we find out who she is then? I’m sorry I’m mixing up all my characters now. >,<

  5. SW does work up the courage to go to her hometown for the first time after the devastating fire, and looks at the remnants of the house where her parents died…and I cry foul. Seriously, Drama? I know you want emotional impact when SW sees her house for the first time after the fire, but this scene is so unrealistic. Maybe it is different in Korea, but in my experience, a house that has been damaged in a fire to the point of being uninhabitable would not be left standing in a community. It would be a health risk due to toxins and debris, and would need to be demolished. If the property owner didn’t, or couldn’t, do it, the community would step in. At least that’s how things transpired when a wildfire ripped through my town and destroyed 118 homes. (I was lucky my house was spared, but houses to the east, north, and west of mine burned, the closest being a block away.) One house up the road from mine was abandoned after it burned, and sat for a full year with a temporary chain link fence around it before the city posted a notice that it was condemning the property and taking control if nothing was done by a specific deadline. Heck, if SW’s burned childhood home had been allowed to stand in its damaged state for seven years, the ravages of weather on the compromised structure would likely have brought it down.

  6. 1 – The reciprocal was more with him liking at what he’s looking at and that’s what he said to SW, ‘I’d follow what l like to look at’. That’s when he showed up after she looked at her fire destroyed home. He was almost the wind beneath her wings because she was gonna get off the bus but he text her and said ‘have a safe trip’. She went through with it.

2 – It was the furniture that SW and JA ordered. I didn’t even realised that they did that. 😊 It got delivered and got left at the front of his empty house.

HW is not into Jisoo as such because he was doing things that he doesn’t usually do like biking, driving and even buying cute socklets for SW because he saw her with her plain ones when he saw her at the studio.

3 – Pianist man is still anxious about what SW knows about Jisoo but he’s still not asking her. He did ask her about the eucalyptus plant in episode 8 and SW just said it was a gift from a friend but I considered her my friend but I don’t think I was her friend.

The gardener is the one pushing him to move on from the slump and he’s sort of getting there.

4 – Power suit lady’s story is she had a daughter who had leukaemia and on the day she died her hands were raised up and she was calling out Omma, but when Power suit lady got there she died and she couldn’t hold her raised hand. So now while testing the AI with her voice, she said ‘why is your voice so cheerful? what’s wrong with you? why couldn’t I hold her hand? If I’d run a little faster maybe I could have.’

HW and SW are getting to know each other still and HW told her that it’s not the location nor exhaustion that made him sleep really good but her. She was stumped and thinking then HW at the end of episode 8 said to her that what she’s thinking is right.

The only thing that’s making the story move is the secret of who HW and how they’re all connected through JiSoo.

  7. The latest episode (8) was endearing. Like everyone said, SW and HW are getting to know each other. They’re soooooo cute!

SW is getting confused about HW’s feelings for her. Ms Gardener had a point when she said “It doesn’t seem one-sided. If dense SW is confused, it’s not one-sided.” This is really interesting. Because although HW is giving her space, we see him (as @agdr03 said) changing, and he’s doing subtle actions that SW started to notice and that’s making her heart flutter. Thus, the confusion. Was he doing those nice things for her because he’s a nice person, or was he treating her specially because she’s special to him?

The story’s moving along better. We found out what made Parasite Lady (MinJeong) ticked. But what her connection to Eunjoo is still not clear. We do know that she knew Eunjoo when she was young as she used to live in that boarding house and probably knew her parents. However, my question is why go to Eunjoo specifically? There’s a connection with her and Parasite Lady’s daughter. The only thing I could think of is food: Eunjoo likes to cook and she does it well; while PL’s daughter asked her mother to visit a list of restaurants that had good food.

I’m glad Eunjoo and that Soupdude broke up – he didn’t give me good vibes. The reason he gave was that he liked the thrill of dating in secret. Now that they were dating openly, he realised he wasn’t as interested as before. This might be a bit of a stretch, but I guess you could link it back to that question “If a tree falls in the forest and it didn’t make a sound, did it exist?”. For him, keeping the relationship a secret would allow him to deny that it ever existed. Perhaps he WAS embarrassed of Eunjoo…

We’re also starting to see Eunjoo change- her hair got a makeover! And it looks amazing on her!

Piano man, on the other hand, continues to agonise over Jisoo’s death and his guilt for what he did in the past. He thought that it was SW who’s waking him from his slump, but it’s actually Ms. Gardener. Say what you will about her, I actually don’t mind her. I like her optimism. However, I completely oppose the idea of her and Piano man getting together. Just no. Please.

  8. Thanks for the update, purplezaido. I hope to catch up with you all soon.

  9. ohlord. I was frowning, too, Welmaris, when I saw the state of SW’s house. That wasn’t realistic.

It exasperates me how the writer and director are so careless with important details like that. And this isn’t the first time, as you know.

There’s the flight time from US to Seoul? He showed up at her side like a genie.
Then traveling all the way to wherever-that-place-was for the sunset.
Then, the scene in the cemetery in Norway. She likes to wear gloves and yet there she was touching gravestone with her bare hands.
There was also the harebrained idea of traveling around Norway without her own car, and just hitchhiking. Dumb dumb dumb. Yeahhhhh, right. In the height of winter, she wanders around a snowy forest by herself.
    And all the convenient coincidences!!

I get that the writer wanted her to die in the middle of the forest with a tree limb (instead of a leaf) falling on her but that whole set-up was unbelievable.

Seriously, it left me feeling insulted that the writer (not the director, though) could think that viewers’ emotions were so easily manipulated by such tragic scene and viewers’ brains wouldn’t revolt at the ridiculous contrivances.

  10. Back to the furniture for what the drama characters are calling the delivery house: SW picked the pieces out with the help of AI JiSoo, then showed the selections to HW, who commented they were JiSoo’s style. SW told HW he needed to buy what had been picked out. I don’t think it was SW who actually placed the purchase order, but HW; that he did buy the furniture speaks well of SW’s growing influence on him.

  11. Thanks for the correction @Welmaris. 😊

  12. Being of a scientific mindset, HW tests methods of overcoming his insomnia, although I suspect he knows the reason he slept so well the night SW was in the house with him. One thing he tries is tiring himself out with exercise, including doing pushups in his office, to the amazement of his colleagues. HW found he didn’t tire himself enough to ensure a good night’s sleep. Maybe HW would have felt more tired if he’d done pushups the same way the Demon Captain did in Prison Playbook. I imagine if he had, his colleagues wouldn’t have just been amazed, their brains would have exploded.

  13. Oh wow! That’s some push ups alright! 😂

Yeah, I felt HW knew it right away as soon as he woke up that it’s probably SW but like you said, he needed to test everything just to make sure it’s the correct conclusion. 😊 But poor thing with his insomnia though. It’s really bad.

  14. Ahhh… So this actor Hung Jaein is famous for his pushups?? What about table tennis?

  15. So the furniture were JiSoo’s style?? Oh, I thought they were SW’s style. I think SW’s style is cozy…just like her room and the recording studio.

  16. I think it ended up being SW’s style after it was put together. HW only commented that it’s Jisoo’s style. I could be wrong. 😄

  17. @packmule3, Jung Hae In is reputed among his leading ladies for having a hard body but a soft heart. Son Ye Jin, who starred with him in Something in the Rain (but is our beloved Seri), said he’s built like a rock. For a Korean drama, there was a lot of physicality between the two leads in SitR, so I imagine her word can be trusted.

After the scene where SW tells HW to purchase the furniture she and AI JiSoo picked out for the house, SW goes to HW’s apartment to take hangover medicine to Soon Ho (Annoying Gardener). While at the apartment, her first time there, SW takes the opportunity to look around. AI JiSoo had previously asked if SW had seen the inside of HW’s apartment, and wondered what was inside. SW’s conclusion, shared with the viewers as her thoughts, is that everything she saw in HW’s apartment represented JiSoo in his life. She wouldn’t have known that if she hadn’t spent time with AI JiSoo picking out furniture, and HW hadn’t told her what they’d selected was JiSoo’s style.

  18. Thanks, Welmaris. I’ve to watch the episodes properly now.

  19. That said, there may be truth to @agdr03’s point that some of the furniture selection reflected SW’s taste. We’ve seen that it isn’t beyond SW to override AI JiSoo’s choice. We saw that in the gift shop when AI JiSoo agreed to talk with HW, then instructed him to find SW. AI JiSoo liked the sparkly stickers, but SW selected and bought the heart stickers, then applied it to the AI device. That’s how in ep. 8 we can tell the difference between AI HaWon and AI JiSoo. I’d thought they were the same unit, repurposed. I did notice the AI unit for Power Suit is blue, so knew it was a different one.

While I’m posting, I have a question from ep 8. Toward the end, HW and SW have a halfway meeting on a pedestrian bridge different from the one significant to JiSoo. This is something instigated by HW, and is an expression of caring. As they talk, then briefly hold hands, there are a couple large things on the roofs in the background, sporting Santa hats. It is spring, trees are blossoming, so I doubt they’re Christmas decorations. I also doubt they’re accidentally in the shot, because during the emotional climax of that scene, one of the WTFs is framed by HW and SW. If Jabba the Hutt had spawn with skin like Easter eggs, then dressed them in Santa hats, that’s what they’d look like IMHO; maybe they’d make more sense to me from a different angle.

  20. “ If Jabba the Hutt had spawn with skin like Easter eggs, then dressed them in Santa hats, that’s what they’d look like IMHO”

I am behind in this drama. But I am trying desperately to envisage this vignette. 😂🤔…before I see the real thing. Definitely intrigued. Especially Jabba the Hutt.

  21. I’m looking at it now and I have to agree with Jabba the Hutt with Easter egg skin with a Santa hat. 😁 It did caught my attention because it was in between HW and SW but I’m not sure what’s the relevance there.

That Half look – looking briefly and affectionately was nicely done.

I wonder what’s with the Power suit lady and EunJoo’s homestay. Her daughter’s name was Eunjoo.

SW was nervous during the last scenes in episode 8 but HW was determined.

That was Jin Soo that was in the bed while Power suit lady had a conversation with her AI right?

  22. @agdr03: Yes, I believe it was Jin Soo, the other new boarder, who popped up from the lower bunk in the doctors’ lounge after the AI Power Suit conversation. I wonder why such a similar name was given to this character.

  23. I present to you

“Jabba the Hutt spawn with skin like Easter eggs in a Santa hat”

    https://i.ibb.co/zRLwCM7/87-AB3-E90-BCB4-44-D0-9-E65-84-CA8-F1-F8-B49.jpg

I’d have to agree…it totally ruined the moment for me. He was asking for her hand (😍)…and Jabba spawn was terribly rude to steal his thunder 🤢. I mean…how dare he (Jabba spawn)? And you couldn’t possibly miss him. Question is…why did PD and writer nim who have given us dreamy visuals thus far thrust that abomination upon us? So out of character. It has to mean something. Maybe it was to hint at JiSoo making a jarring comeback and trying her utmost (as AI) to come between our OTP? As Jabba spawn. Santa hat – hint at winter? Snow? Oslo?? Clutching at straws here. 😂. Or maybe it’s leftover decorations from Christmas (and as you said, it’s now Spring) so perhaps leftover feelings from JiSoo Ssi? I always felt like she was this invisible presence between the 2 of them, hovering over them like an unwanted specter. She was innocent in the beginning but maybe she’s showing us her true colours now…as Jabba Easter Egg Spawn. Look out. Here she comes to ruin it for HW and SW.

  24. Funny is there’s another one further on another building? Weird. Hopefully we can get an answer. 😄

But I agree that for some reason as much as JiSoo connected HW and SW together, I feel she’s coming between them too like when SW was going to see HW at his place but because she dropped AI Jisoo, SW went back.

  25. I don’t know @Welmaris but is the AI product supposed to be a secret for now? I remember a scene where someone asked HW whose Jisoo? Then HW told him to delete everything on his computer. I can’t remember if that was Jin Soo though.

  26. Thanks for the pic. What a shot?! Couldn’t the director have shot this from another angle??!!

  27. @agdr03, the scene you are vaguely recalling happened at HW’s company with a junior employee who had accessed highly personal files without permission. This colleague came with HW and Gary to the recording studio to retrieve the JiSoo files SW had deleted from the studio computer. Junior was hoping that by analyzing the JiSoo files, he’d get a clue as to the direction HW would go for his next big invention. In past episodes we saw HW and Gary hide the existence of the test AI units from Junior, so he’s not part of the innermost circle at the company.

@packmule3, Director could have framed the scene differently, but didn’t, which is why I’m left pondering the meaning of what I saw (and now can’t unsee).

  28. “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Perhaps one reason Director included Jabba Santa Easter Egg in the meet-halfway scene is to emphasize that HW and SW are on a different pedestrian bridge than the one associated with JiSoo. They get their own bridge of significance!

There’s a lot of hand holding that goes on in this episode, which I want to review. But first, I have an appointment at Yulje Medical Center.

  29. Thanks @Welmaris. I wanted to confirm that it wasn’t Jin Soo. 😊
