This list is by no means exhaustive. I’m relying on the Taectanic ship captain, Hafunohane, and crew members, allegramente, lovebangwon, nearsea and the other new recruits, agdr03, nrllee, miracle23, Cloud, and other Reply 1988 afficionados to add things that I missed. Thanks.
It started about halfway this episode when Songhwa got annoyed with childish prank of IJ and asked him if they were still in Reply 1988. “That’s such an old trick.”
Of course, that was said tongue-in-cheek because everything they DID do afterwards on the way to the restaurant was reminiscent of Episode 18. lol.
This post is picture-laden; it might be slow uploading.
1. Cameo
He was Taec’s Dad who married Sunwoo’s Mom.
From Episode 20.
2. Turtle
Hospital Playlist: Taec’s dad offered IJ the golden turtle but IJ refused because it would be considered bribery. He even ran away from it. lol. But that’s a lucky turtle.
Reply 1988: Taec proposed marriage to Deoksun with the turtle.
From Episode 20
3. Crossing the line
I discussed it here: Hospital Playlist: Updated: The Line War, lol
Hospital Playlist: Opening the door
Reply 1988: Crossing the line
Opening the door and crossing the lines are visual cues that the couple is ready to “experience the world, rules, and relationships” hidden behind the door.
4. Timing
Timing: the bitterest word in the JungHwan’s shippers’ lexicon.
Hospital Playlist: Capt Ahn realized that he missed the timing.
She dropped by the NS room to invite him to drink but he had already gone with his friends.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, after Taec got to Deoksun first, he kept going on and on blaming timing and fate.
But he finally admitted that it was his fault.
“In the end, fate and timing do not just happen by coincidence. They are the products of countless earnest choices that make up miraculous moments. Giving up and making decisions without reservations or hesitation (Yes! dang it! Taek just forfeited his game without hesitation). That is what makes timing. He wanted her more than I did. I should have been more courageous. My countless hesitations were to blame.
5. Coffee
Why all the fuss about coffee since Episode 6??
Hospital Playlist: In Episode 3, Songhwa made coffee for JW. He drank it and complimented her. The other guys, IJ and Ahn, were always buying her coffee.
Reply 1988: This is the reason why there were so much coffee scenes in Hospital Playlist. In Episode 10 of Reply 1988, Deoksun made Taec a half-and-half coffee from the vending machine.
This was one of my favorite shots,
From that time on, Deoksun was the official coffee-maker for Taec because he liked the way she brewed coffee. Even in Episode 18, when he came to visit her at a bookstore for her interview, she ran downstairs to grab him his coffee.
Coffee was a sign of love.
6. Immature behavior gets friend-zoned.
Hospital Playlist: IJ did it again.
Songhwa scolded him, “What are you doing? Do you think we’re in Reply 1988? That’s such an old trick.” This is an inside joke because everything they did was about Reply 1988. It was meta.
Reply 1988: In Episode 16, while they were waiting for the bus, Dongryul pranked Deoksun. Just like Songha, Deoksun scolded him for playing around saying, “You’re late. How can you even think of joking around right now.
7. Fighting over car music
Hospital Playlist: Songhwa fusses over the bluetooth of the car. She couldn’t get the music.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, Deoksun and JungHwan argued about his music tapes in his vehicle As usual, Junghwan called her stupid. He always denigrated her even in high school.
8. New Car and Lousy Parking Skills
Hospital Playlist: Jwan bought a new car. But because he was afraid that his buddies would discover IS’ identity, he parked his car haphazardly.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, Taec bought a new car but he couldn’t park it very well. It took him several times to reverse park. And he had to check that he left ample distance between wall and car door.
9. Private Conversation
Hospital Playlist: Almost throughout the meal, the other guys were the ones talking. Songhwa didn’t voice her personal opinion on SH’s parent problem. It was only when JW asked her what she thought about it did speak up.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, the other guys, except for Taec, were teasing Deoksun nonstop during the dinner. Deoksun was parrying their teasing.
For a brief moment, Deoksun and Taec were in their “private bubble” while the guys were talking among each other. After saying that she doesn’t drink, Deoksun asked him if he could give her a drink. Without missing a beat, Taec said, “I can’t. You have to drive.”
Both two scenes showed that Songhwa and Deoksun being treated differently by JW and Taec, respectively. JW and Taec didn’t treat Songhwa and Deoksun like just one of the guys.
10. Chocolates
Hospital Playlist: Songhwa started eating chocolate while she was with Capt Ahn and he realized that he had bad timing.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, Junghwan channeled Forest Gump. “Life is a box of chocolates.”
He went on, “You never know what you’re going to get before you open it. You may get a bitter chocolate. It can’t be helped. That’s the fate that I have chosen. There are no regrets and no tears. No need for heartbreak.”
Likewise, Capt Ahn accepted the fate he’d been given. There was no need for heartbreak because Songhwa friend-zoned him. I think he’s suited for the other resident who gave up her time and volunteered to do the night shift so he could have a night out.
11. Secret dating skills
Hospital Playlist: Everybody assumed that JW didn’t go out on “dates” because he wanted to enter priesthood. He was actually very much sought after by both the residents and nurses in the hospital.
Reply 1988: In Episode 18, Taec was late for the gang’s get-together. Dong-ryul told Sunwoo to text him to tell him to just meet them up at their next hang-out place. Dong-ryul envied Taec’s charisma, “Man, that punk is a real pro. Any girl would fall for him.”
Most critics will argue that “Hospital Playlist” is different from “Reply 1988.” That’s true. The focus, setting, timing, etc., are different. However, one thing remains constant. And that’s the worldview of the writer. As I keep on stressing, she isn’t going to RADICALLY change the way she views love, friendship, marriage, and family relationship. These are convictions firmly ingrained in her and these will always show in all her work.
And to me, that’s the point of director’s tweet about variation that @miracle23 shared here with us. The writer uses the same themes, but varies them to give them a fresh perspective.
Here’s the video made by @hafunohane for a soompi contest in 2016. (The Deoksun-Taec team won first place, of course.)
Enjoy!!!
I must explain the concept behind this MTV. Unlike other fanvids, we thought we should make a video that would capture the essence of the drama. So all the defining moments were included.
These moments were selected from a list that shippers created.
We had a simple instrumental music in the first half so we could listen to the conversations without noisy soundtrack interfering. The conversation were chosen to explain how Taek and Deoksun’s relationship developed.
Then, for the latter half, we switched to a music that would reflect the couple. And that’s when all couple-y images were thrown in. The ending showed the words which we thought best defined the couple.
Hafunohane did that MTV. 🙂 Kudos!!!
I am nervous to read your hospital playlist posts! 😛 what if we are on different “ships”? But wth… let me join the party…
https://i.giphy.com/media/14nWvlsPu3kVHy/giphy.webp
What do you mean? On whose ship are you on??
😂 For shame @staygold – Andrea/Maggot?
I suddenly miss suntaek 🥰
Same here, lovebangwon. The shipping wars were annoying but it was fun doing our “crazy” analyses, right?
I saw somebody tweet one of my Hotel Playlist commentaries. I was going to tell her to please take it down because I don’t want to be part of that fanwar on twitter. I believe she was an IJ-Songhwa fan, too. Thankfully, when I went back it was gone, it was gone.
@packmule3 I have sent you the hints as of ep 7 via email for yimour safekeeping. It is WIP till end of season 1.😊
Thanks, miracle23. Will take a look at it. 🙂
I’m late to my homage to Reply 1988 but I love this scene where Taek and Deoksun finally gets together. I like the kunde…. and that’s all Taek needed to kiss her. 😍
https://youtu.be/wVraNTJBN_M
I am wise now! I am not falling for this writer’s tricks (IJ-SongHwa)! I am just praying she doesn’t kill anyone off!
@nrllee Never Andrea-Dr. Maggot isn’t happening. But I wish Dr Chu Min Ha – Dr Suk Hyung shud definitely happen.
lol.
Staygold, did we bamboozle you? It’s alright, you know. You’re still my friend. It’s okay if we don’t agree. I’ll still treat you to virtual cookie. 🙂
Gosh! How long has it been, too? Four years? lol. Five years?
Oh yes, I’m on board with MinHa- SH. I like that she’s a “bear.” SH needs a bear person to wash over him.
And you know what’s funny? I think the two mothers-in-law will click. Both their mothers seem to have a large say in their lives, right? It should be fun.
😛 We met during Goblin.. so almost 3-3.5 years!!! Yayy! cookie party!
MinHa-SH would make a great team along with mothers(even if they dislike each other).
Andrea-Maggot seems like a trap. It is too easy. So is IK-SongHwa. Jun Wan isn’t to be taken seriously.
I don’t know. I m too slow! 😀 I will just keep changing my bets!
🍪🍪🍪 and here’s 🍦 ice cream too.
We’re here dissecting each episode and looking for clues. The usual… You should join us tomorrow.
I’m only half-joking when I say that I want IK with Maggot. I think they bring out the best in each other. She gets an oppa who dotes on her. And he gets a young playmate. 😂 And IJ is not strait-laced like Andrea. Speaking from experience, it’s hardER to marry into a devout Catholic family when you aren’t Catholic yourself.
“it’s hardER to marry into a devout Catholic family when you aren’t Catholic yourself.”
ooooo! And she is a devout Christian!! I didn’t think much about it except that she loves to sing. I have new eyes!!
I am now on the husband search post, slowly reading my way up.
Right?
So go on ahead and look for more clues. It’s like old days when the Taecgui/SunTaek people were told to 🤐 because there was no way. It wasn’t gonna happen.
But let’s see. Who knows what the second act holds for us?
I never pay to much attention into details while watching drama/series like crossing the line, opening the door until i learned about this thread,oh shame on me😂😂😂😂. So i tried to find some possible clues, bear with me pls. Im not good at it. You guys i mean bithches talked about the importance of coffee schene, did you guys notice songhwa’s set mugs? I mean she used different set of mugs when she drink coffee with the gang, im not sure if theres any significance.
Oh let me thank you guys, love the discussion and comments here, keep it coming!!!
@FromFarWayLand yes, we’re keeping tabs on the hot vs. iced coffee as well as the pink & blue couple mug that so far she’s only ever used for JW 🙂
@hafunohane, I agree. She has been only using both blue & pink mugs either when making her own drink or, thus far, making and serving to JWon. Camera always has that mug in focus whenever she used them.
I am sorry I couldn’t add much to R88 homage cos I haven’t watch the drama yet. 😅
However, from reading yours truly’s posts I picked up this similarity:
@packmule3 wrote ‘In the last of the trilogy, Reply 1988, the mealtimes exposed the dynamics between different characters. The second male lead, for example, always criticized Deoksun for her big appetite or messy eating habit while Taec was infamous for his unadventurous palate.’
In HP ep. 7 we saw IJ commented on Shwa and Jwan eating like being possessed by a ghost. He was not criticising her (I think) but more like complaining? 😅 Can this be considered paying homage to R88 too?
Good one!! 👍👍
Yes.
Also Taec was a picky eater, just like JW who couldn’t eat seafood something (soup?) because he was allergic. And he couldn’t eat spicy food.
There’s a difference between IJ’s complaints and JW’s.
I’ll explain in a bit.
To continue:
To me, JW’s complaint that the two were eating too fast was different from IJ’s complaint.
With JW, he was upset because he felt that he was being IGNORED. This implied that he WANTED to be noticed. Remember, he’s a very sensitive person. He doesn’t like to be overlooked or passed over. (note: the karaoke argument in Ep 3 with JWan.)
So…he doesn’t mind that Songhwa eats fast. In fact, we saw him grilling meat for her. He was also annoyed with JWan for getting the meat that he’d pushed over to Songhwa’s side. He was upset however, when she didn’t pay attention that he hadn’t eaten yet, and she and JWan were deciding to order 2 bowls of rice. That’s when he slammed his palm on the table and accused Songhwa (remember, it was Songhwa) of being selfish. He blurted out. “You’re so selfish.”
To me, in hindsight, he must have been jealous. He was triggered that Songhwa and JWan were already deciding between the TWO of them to get just one bowl of rice. He was excluded from Songhwa’s equation. She didn’t even ask HIM if he wanted to have some. That’s why he blew up like that, and squabbled with JWan like 4-years-old kids.
lol. Funny that IJ should say that…considering that he and JWan also fought like kids, regarding Iksun. IJ and Jwan’s fight was worse that Jwan+JW’s fight because they pulled hair, didn’t they?
Now, in comparison, IJ’s complaint about Songhwa’s and JWan’s eating had something to do with rudeness. Period. He also noticed that they were eating fast in Episode 2 but he didnt take it personally. To him, it was a question of table manners. They should pay attention to the rest of the table.
Do you see the difference now?
IJ = when Songhwa AND JWan scarfed food down = bad manners. breach of etiquette.
JW = when SONGHWA scarfed food down and just thought of Jwan’s appetite = she was overlooking his needs/forgetting about him = it’s PERSONAL.
That’s why I think that JW likes Songhwa, deep down inside. However, since he was just “one of the guys” for her, AND she didn’t treat him any differently from the rest, he assumed that he wasn’t good enough for her. He had put himself in the friend-zone.
Wah, thank you @packmule3 for the clarification!🥰 When you said it like that it makes perfect sense of his reaction vs IJ’s. Cookies for you! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
‘That’s why I think that JW likes Songhwa, deep down inside. However, since he was just “one of the guys” for her, AND she didn’t treat him any differently from the rest, he assumed that he wasn’t good enough for her. He had put himself in the friend-zone.’
😥 It feels like it will be hard to see him confess esp. after he heard what happen to Shyeong’s confession. Unless SHwa says something or picks up something from his reactions, I think JWon will just remain silent about what is in his heart.
