The King: Ep 16 The Happy Ending

@carolstar wrote:

Much as I like them forever dating until old age I feel sad that there is no Queen in the end.

I see I have to leave my Cynical Island and sit a spell with you.

Let’s start with SinJae.

Lee Gon was studying the bus stop route and times when young SinJae’s baseball rolled across the street and stopped at his feet. He tossed the ball at the kid. It was 1994.

The kid was heading back when he suddenly turned to ask Lee Gon, “Where are you headed? I’ll tell you the bus routes.” But Lee Gon already noticed the name of the kid written on the back of his uniform. It said “Kang SinJae.” Before Lee Gon could answer, a car crashed behind the kid.

Lee Gon realized the implication here. Kang SinJae would have been hit by the car if he and Lee Gon hadn’t met by “fate” and stopped to talk for a few seconds.

When TaeEul arrived with the bus tokens (Don’t you just love how TaeEul takes care of business for both of them? She’s the practical one.), Lee Gon told her, “I think I know why the door brought us to this time on this day.”

Note: We can safely conclude that the portal doesn’t just randomly drop them off anywhere. There’s also a bit of Divine Providence or Divine Intervention at play whenever and wherever the portal opens up for them.

After this bus stop scene, Lee Gon dropped by in Republic of Korea, 2022. He passed by an adult Kang Sinjae who looked like he was a chaebol’s son. This should have been Sinjae’s trajectory all along if he hadn’t encountered an accident and gotten into a coma, and he wasn’t swapped for Kang Hyeonmin. Ha! This Kang Sinjae wouldn’t have crossed paths with Jeong TaeEul.

BTW, the Yoyo Kid was NOT the flute.

He’s Fate.  Sure, the flute was divided into two, but when Yoyo Kid said, “I also want to save myself and become whole,”

he meant that there was him and the Yoyo Bully Teenager and they were counteracting each other.

They were “divided” because Yoyo Bully Teenager was working to get TaeEul and SinJae together (or to be precise, Luna and Hyeonmin), while he was working to get TaeEul and Lee Gon together.

Do you get it? Yoyo kid meant that the lives of TaeEul, Luna, Sinjae (or rather Hyeongmin) and Lee Gon were messed up together. He wanted to save “himself” and make “himself” whole again by making sure that Luna and Hyeongmin end up together

and Lee Gon and TaeEul end up together.

Only then could Yoyo Kid say that Fate was made whole again.

So just like the portal dropped them in 1994 to intervene in young Sinjae’s life, the portal also dropped them off back in Lee Gon’s 2022 Kingdom of Corea. He was surprised.

LG: Wait.
TE: What? Where are we now?
LG: Those are 1200-lumen flashlights. The Royal Guards use them. We came to the same period in the Kingdom of Corea. Damn it. I left just a little while ago.

It meant they didn’t time- or space-travel. He essentially just picked up TaeEul and brought her to his world. But this would be TaeEul’s first visit to the Kingdom of Corea after she left with Eunsub,

and her first time meeting with Yeong after they captured Luna.

To me, this was Divine Providence/Divine Intervention moving them along in their relationship. Just like the portal opened up to SinJae’s world in 1994 to help SinJae, the portal here opened up to Lee Gon’s world in 2022 to help Lee Gon.

LG: (continuing) Yeong must be looking for me.
TE: What?! (hiding)
Yeong: Your Majesty?
LG: The Royal Guards are to take ten steps back at once. Yeong, you too. You guys totally startled me. I’ll take a roundabout way to the palace. I’ll go through the beach so that no one will see me.
TE: (peeked out from under his trenchcoat and waved)

Yeong: Your Majesty.
LG: Yes, Yeong. It’s that situation.

By “situation,” Lee Gon meant their (mis)adventures with Lee Lim. I believe Yeong’s memories of the night of the treason as well as Lady Noh’s memories weren’t erased.

They went to the palace, and TaeEul was trying to recall the sequence of events on her first time visiting the palace.

TE: Gosh, I almost couldn’t breathe. Who’s after Yeong? Who finds out next? Head Court Lady Noh?
LG: Head Court Lady.

And then, Lady Noh walked in. She spotted TaeEul in that mask of hers. And of course, she knew who was under that mask. Her memories were intact.

LG: The talisman must’ve worked. I’m letting her use my personal item. You should know what that means?
Noh: I’ve been wondering when the Royal Ancestral Shrine will be completed. Will it be completed next year? (leaving the nightcap) Drink up. All of it.

Now, I thought the Queenship was implied when Lady Noh asked him whether the work on the Royal Ancestry Shrine would be completed by “next year.”

You see, Lee Gon wouldn’t have the “face” or courage to make his bow at his ancestors’ shrine and pay his respects to his forefathers if he failed to observe filial piety. As king of the Kingdom of Corea, an intrinsic part of his filial piety was to ensure that his lineage continues. It was his duty to the Kingdom and his responsibility to his ancestors to have descendants.

I mentioned this before when I explained the discussion between PM Koo and Lee Gon in Episode 4.

PM: You’re indebted to me now, Your Majesty. Good luck with solving this one. I’ll see you next week.
LG: Prime Minister Koo. Let me tell you something. I didn’t want to offend you, but this won’t sound pleasant. Every moment of my life is the history of the Kingdom of Corea. And I want that history to last forever because I am the King of this country. But that will require more than just my benevolence. Therefore I can never be indebted to you.

You must “finesse” that statement.

He was telling PM Koo that he wasn’t going to marry her. That’s why he said, “I didn’t want to offend you, but this won’t sound pleasant.” He knew that she was offering to be his queen, but he was rejecting her SUBTLY to save her face. He was rejecting her offer.

Of course, PM Koo chose to ignore that. In Episode 9, she posed the question again. This time Lee Gon didn’t bother to couch his answer in diplomatic language. Eunsub thought they were being bold and shameless. But Eunsub didn’t know that Lee Gon already parried off PM Koo’s advances with much formality and politesse, and PM Koo just ignored him. So now, he was rejecting her bluntly.

PM: Aren’t you getting married?
LG: That was a rather random question. Why? Do you want to marry me?
PM: Can I?
LG: No. I already proposed to someone else. What’s the next agenda?
Eunsub: (thinking) Wow. This world is very aggressive.

Pay attention now: Lee Gon knew that whatever he did had consequences that would impact the kingdom for generations to come.

His decisions and actions = history of the Kingdom

Duh.

Duh GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

The biggest decision and action he would ever make is the choice of bride + wife + mother of future generations of kings/queens of the Kingdom of Corea.

Like this guy… Best choice ever!

royal wedding 2013 | Tumblr

That’s what Lee Gon meant when he said that his benevolence wasn’t enough.

It would require more than his “benevolence” i.e., his good policies, his fair laws, his astute resolutions, his encouraging speeches, his kind gestures, and blah blah, to ensure that his history would last FOREVER.

These policies, laws, resolutions, speeches, and gestures would only last…hmmm…At the most? Two generations. After that, his accomplishments would only be displayed in a glass case inside a museum. But his greatest LIVING LEGACY would be his DESCENDANTS.

Ugh! I don’t see why people don’t get that.

Corea is a parliamentary monarchy meaning there’s a prime minister. But prime ministers are dispensable, and only the King is irreplaceable. Since the populace can’t kick their king out, it’s imperative that the Kingdom be guided by a wise ruler.

The greatest gift Lee Gon could bequeath to his Kingdom upon his death was a good ruler. Just like his father guided him, and Lady Noh and Prince Buyeong mentored him after his father’s death, he must ensure that the future of his kingdom was in good hands with a good ruler. His benevolence was merely a starting point. Passing on that benevolence for posterity was the end goal.

That’s why I thought it was appropriate that, before Lee Gon killed Lee Lim, he recited the words that his father had taught him about the sword.

He wasn’t killing Lee Lim merely because of revenge or because of the treason (although the treason was reason enough). He was meting out judgment and punishment as was required of him as King of the Kingdom of Corea. This was his duty as monarch: to defeat evil and “to make things right.”

His father taught him that. Even before he learned about the legend Manpasikjeok, his father impressed upon him the legend of the sword because he was going to be the ruler of the kingdom someday.

“The sky bestows the heart upon us, and the ground helps the spirit. The sun and the moon are formed. As the mountains and streams form, lightning strikes. A sage is moved to defeat the evil of the mountains and streams. Wield it with deep thoughts and make things right.”

King: That is the calling of the Four Tiger Sword. Only the King can become the owner of the Four Tiger Sword. Do you think you can fulfill this calling, Gon?
LG: Yes, Father.
King: Even if it requires you to eat beans and spinach?
LG: Then, maybe next time, Father.
King: All right. But why? Is the challenge too steep for you now?

As you can see, this wisdom is handed down from father to son. To me, Lady Noh’s reminder to complete the Royal Ancestry Shrine by next year was her subtle way of saying that to honor his forefathers, he must have offspring.

But really, @Carolstars, when you think about this, the Queen issue is such a SMALL problem compared to what they had gone through.

I know in Episode 10, Yeong broached this topic.

Yeong: Can you handle it?
TE: Handle what?
Yeong: Everything that will happen after Lee Lim is caught.

At this time, Yeong didn’t know what Lee Gon and TaeEul had to do in order to survive Lee Lim. Everything AFTER Lee Lim was a cakewalk.

Yeong: You two belong to different worlds. Will you travel back and forth? His Majesty is the king of a country. He needs to be with someone who’ll become queen. Can you abandon everything you have here and become the queen of the Kingdom of Corea? And keep the two worlds a secret forever?

Later on, TaeEul’s answer was very clear.

She told Luna, “Don’t live just a bit. Live a long life. Or else my dad will be upset.” Her point was this, “I’m going to go somewhere. It might take a long time. Protect my dad while I’m gone as Jeong TaeEul.”

She was willing to abandon her world.

She also told SinJae to hand her the flute.

SJ: If you go, you might not come back. Why would you go?
TE: I don’t think I can remain here and endure it alone. Don’t make me do that. Please. Give it to me.

Then, she begged him for it.

TE: Please…give it to me. I won’t apologize for not having known about your feelings for me. If I say I feel bad for you now, I’d be a hypocrite. But just like your feelings for me, I also like someone a lot. I promise I’ll come back and make up for all the times I upset you.

This was an empty promise, and they both knew it. There were only two choices for her: death or if she somehow survived, Lee Gon.

TE: So just give it to me. Please help me. If I don’t go, I think I’ll really die, Hyungnim.

Note: Ignore the sub here. She didn’t call him Sinjae. She addressed as “Hyungnim” which is a formal way of saying Big Brother. This brought home how she truly felt about him. She regarded him only as an older brother. (And see that? She didn’t call him by that dreadful word, “oppa.” I was right to ban that word for TKEM. lol)

So, when you seriously think about this, if TaeEul was willing to die just to be with him, then traveling back and forth both worlds and being a queen of Corea should be a piece of cake for her.

To me, the writer KES didn’t want to spoon feed us with too much sweetness in one go.

Stooooop!

Sugar GIFs | Tenor

I can think of beautiful and sweet solutions to this Happy Ending:

1. Arrange for a scholarship for Luna and Sinjae to study abroad for a year so TE and LG can get married while they’re away.

2. Arrange a private wedding and say that Queen is a reclusive person, and won’t do any public appearances (e.g., Japan’s Empress Masako).

3. LG was known to go missing for ages (and stay in his “study”) so let it stay that way. Tell citizens that he’s marrying a very private person who prefers to be a private citizen for the rest of her life while supporting him in his role as king of the country in private. (Aren’t the Koreans accustomed to that when an actor marries a non-celebrity? They leave the spouse alone?)

4. That’s the role of Nari’s doppelgänger in the palace press office. Wasn’t she a fiction writer before? Make her write up the press releases about Queen and King without the Queen’s face shown EVER. She can write creative stories out of nothing and write happy hashtags forever.

5. No “two-shot.” Maybe Nari’s doppelgänger can stage a wedding photo with just Lee Gon and TaeEul’s hands wearing their wedding rings or LG and TE’s silhouettes.

6. Back in TaeEul’s world, Lee Gon can be introduced to her father and friends as her boyfriend, fiancé, then husband. Later, tell everybody that she’s emigrating to the US. Present them with a baby later.

7. Lady Noh can be introduced to her father as Lee Gon’s grandmother to give Lee Gon some family background.

Do you see that? It’s so easy to create a happily-ever-after because the two most ingredients are already there: Lee Gon and TaeEul.

Everything else is just a cherry on top. 🙂

  1. O great and wise packmule3, thank you for rescuing me from the abyss of despair I fell into after watching the finale. I was too taken by the “easy” ending of a lot of loose ends to see what you have just described. I would like to say that I think the writer could have made this a little clearer for us loyal fans. NOW, I think I will add this drama to my favorites to watch over and over again. And I hope I will always be able to come back to this group to refresh my thoughts when I do so. You all rock, but packmule3 – I give you a full 45 degree bow from the waist. I recognize greatness when I read it. Thank you!!!

  2. Lady Noh said drink up all of that drink so we can have an heir by next year. LOL. I love her! 🙂

Come to think of it, it is nice to have a weekend in different era’s and you get to wear clothes and eat the food that is in during those times. So that suitcase did come in handy. 🙂

I just want to add that for our royal heir I want it to be twins too. 🙂

Oh shout out for Princess Catherine, she is the best choice! Love her!

  3. I know, right? When Lady Noh said drink it all up, I wondered whether she spiked the drink and put an aphrodisiac, “energizer” or something in it. 😈

Oh yes. 👍👍 for Princess Kate.

  4. Yup! As the oldest in the royal household, I’m sure she’s very eager to see LG and TE’s offspring so she will help at all cost to have it happen. After all her talisman did worked too as LG said 🙂

  5. But I actually thought the finale was good. 😂

I’m so used to sad endings that when I saw them walking together at the end, I thought “Heyyy! KES wasn’t depressed anymore.”

And mind you, TaeEul’s wearing a skirt. THE FIRST TIME EVER. (The actress Tae-ra version doesn’t apply bec that’s a totally different world.)

Anyway, I’m not done yet explaining things…

  6. Wow..I love this post! Thank you @packmule3😊😊 This made my day😍😍 I totally see the logic of why they will get married – the kingdom cannot be without heirs and LG is too committed to his responsibilities as a king to leave it without a direct heir.

    Yesss to royal twins, @agdr03🙌

    #TeamLeeGonForever

  7. As much as I love this royal story and the ending so much, I must say thanks to you and other s in this blog that helped me througout this show in order to grasp all hints and facts.

This drama is 100x better with those explanations 🖤 Thank you for gloriously making my day full of happiness for the past two months. Hail to the King and Queen of Kingdom of Corea, Lee Gon and Jeong Taeul.

Saranghae Kim Eunsook for sharing us your beautiful and complicated mind 🤗

I’ll wait for your next entry patiently.

  8. Lol. I didn’t realize that people here thought that TaeEul didn’t want to be Queen. I thought that was a foregone conclusion. KES didn’t need to spell it out.

Lee Gon didn’t abdicate the throne. He knew his duties. So did TaeEul. She knew exactly what she was getting into. Remember? Outside the hospital? She asked Lee Gon if they could just travel back and forth. They didn’t have to change anything and save the world.

I wrote about this when I was (bitches)plaining that episode.

TE: If you’re trying to say you need to go, don’t. I’m not going to let you leave. Let’s just not save the world. Let’s just go back and forth and only think about the present. Hmm?
LG: (looking at her, not saying a word)
TE: I know what you’re planning. You’re thinking of going to the past. You’re going to try and catch Lee Lim before he comes to this world.
    LG: (sighing)
TE: Then I won’t be able to remember you. If our worlds flow differently from the present, then I’ll live without knowing you.
LG: Our worlds have already gone so wrong. There are so many reasons to change the past. And that is the only way. So tell me to go. Tell me to leave. Please. I’m asking for someone’s permission for the first time in my life. If you stop me, I can’t leave.
TE: Tell me you’ll come back. That’s the 10th rule. No matter what happens, you have to come back. That’s the 11th rule. Catch Lee Lim, and even if the door closes, open all the doors in the universe and return to me. Promise me you’ll do that. That’s the 12th rule.
LG: I will. I’ll open all the doors in the universe. And I promise I will return to you.

She loved the guy. She knew that the guy was king and was committed to his responsibilities. She was willing to leave everything to Luna and follow him. She was even willing to die for this guy.

    So being his Queen?

    Pffffft.

That wasn’t a problem. She was embracing her fate as the lifelong partner of Lee Gon. If her fate entailed being a queen to his king, then so be it. That was her fate. All she wanted was time to go through the things they skipped. lol. And they had plenty of time now.

When Lee Gon said, “No matter what kind of a door opens before us in life, and even if the moments we share in life make us sad at times, I wish to love tirelessly. Just like that. We decided to love the fate that chose us. Just for today and only for today. Forever.”

    it simply meant that:

    a. they would treasure each day.
    b. they would love each other no matter what, for better for worse (just like in the marriage vows).
    c. they would love forever.
    d. they were fated for each other.

  9. Did you think that there was a sexual innuendo when LG told Lady Noh that he was sharing everything with TaeEul? “I’m letting her use my personal items. You should know what that means.”

    😂😂😈🙂

What personal items? His blanket? His bed?

And Lady Noh didn’t create a ruckus.

  10. And Phoenix,

does it even make sense for TaeEul to balk at being queen? It’s like saying,

“Okay, I’ll die for you, Lee Gon, but hell, no. I won’t be your queen. That’s really too much to ask of me. I’m just fine with death. Really. I can be brave and face death any time. But be your queen and have your children?!! No way. I draw a line there.”

    🤪🤦‍♀️

  11. 😂 now that you mentioned it yeah! Sharing Personal items, maybe better put as sharing “private” items. 🤣

Oh Lady Noh is a very smart woman! She got it! 😁

I would like to try that mask though 😂

  12. Sigh why are people so hung up about her being Queen? It just takes me back to 100DMP when everyone was bemoaning the lack of a Royal Wedding and the consummation 🙄. Why have a stuffy royal wedding with dignitaries and decorum when you can have a private kiss watched on by people that matter to you showering you with Cherry Blossom Petals? They were together in the end and that’s all that mattered? The world is
their oyster. They can pen their own happy ever after.

  13. @packmule3 Yes that’s very reassuring🥰 Leaving her old life behind and becoming a queen won’t be difficult for her because she already had made the ultimate decision to die for him. She was committed to staying with him, through thick and thin. Sigh..this gladdens my romantic heart finally❤❤❤

@nrllee Sorry I know a wedding is not required but I find it somehow unsettling if I don’t have total closure at the end of a drama. I know that makes me a hopeless romantic 😢..but I keep wondering how sad it will be if they keep on meeting fleetingly every weekend (or every year like in CLOY) only to be apart and live separate lives for the rest of the time?
But I’m with you on the no to stuffy weddings and showering of cherry blossom petals as they have a small private wedding😍😍😍

Lol..I should start writing fanfics too😜

  14. @Phoenix 😂 don’t mind me. The reference to private “wedding” was what happened in 100DMP. I haven’t watched the TKEM ending so I don’t have context. By all means write fanfics to satisfy your romantic heart.

  15. @nrllee I haven’t watched 100DMP..maybe I should watch it now🤔🤔

Definitely will include a beaheading kiss + a hickey in my fanfic😜😜😜

  16. The writing/dialogue in this show is so beautiful and it’s only the English translation that I was presented. Imagine understanding it in the native tongue, when we get all of the references without leaving tidbits to be lost-in-translation.

I feel so much better about the ending! I was smiling as I read this (Bitches)plaining. Thank you @packmule3!

I was sad, on and off, for days. I’ve read over 200 comments on this blog, and I was trying to imagine that JE and LG remained singletons until the end, but they lived for the present, was forever in love, and continued to see each other until death. I didn’t need to imagine them married and with children. LG can appoint a relative to be heir to the throne.

I didn’t think HCL retained her memories from the previous 2 loops. I imagined that LG was honest and told her some stories of his lady love and that was why HCL is less the “disruptor” this time around. She is more open minded to the stranger and is embracing the (near) future of matrimony.

But, if she did retain her memories, perhaps Fate favored her because she prayed to the gods so much? She was both a believer and a faithful person. With Prince BY deceased, she is the closest person/family member to LG, and perhaps Fate gave more favor to LG and wanted him to have more people to support him in this “new world” view, LL died in 1994, and no body-swapping.

I like the idea of Queen TE being super private and super supportive of her LG. Long live Queen TE!

  17. Oh gnashing of my teeth grrr…I was writing a long reply to you this morning and I lost it all when I accidentally refreshed on my handphone 😱 the perils of a newbie writing sighh so here it goes again. Wish I have that flute to rewind time!
So I woke up this morning and TA DA I got my gift! I got me my Royal Descendants! 👶👶
I love all your options! LG and TE gets plenty of private study time 😉😉 Nari’s doppelganger continues doing what she does best. This time with plenty of cute babies pictures with Queen TE’s face nicely camouflaged.
I knew that Fate had their backs because of that predestined video clip that LG saw in I think JY’s laptop. But when you wrote that Divine Providence/ intervention (also named Fate ?) brought about their 2nd replay of that hide in LG jacket scene then I realised that yes a royal union is hinted at already! (did anyone notice a trench coat bump?)😂
And when Lady Noh said to drink up her nitecap and about work on the Ancestral shrine completion ( Hhehe it only takes 9 months 😉)..
Oh yes paying respects to his ancestral shrine would most certainly mean accepting his filial duties to ensure the eternal Monarch that’s why all sageuk dramas about Kings and Princes also emphasized on lineage.
And before when all that cryptic dialogue with LG and PM Koo went over my fluffy head I understand now what he means!
    너무너무 감사합니다
    neomu neomu gamsahabnida
    Thank you so very much!
I Bow to you with my Top hat off! Wish I knew how to insert a gif for that!

Talking of gifs sorry I am a wanderer. I love your cakewalk and teaspoons of sugar gifs! Where do you find the appropriate ones!?
Makes me go humming “A teaspoon of sugar to make the medicine go down, the medicine go down”

I would like to comment something about Netflix here. They do not do justice to the subbing of korean’s way of honorific speech. Especially when it comes to the words “Sunbae” “Noona” “HyungMin”. It was so important when TE said the word “Hyungmin” to Sin Jae in her last conversation with him and not Sin Jae as they subbed it because TE adressed her good old friend like an older brother full of respect and honor. HYUNG NIM. She was pleading with him as an older brother to let her go to her love whatever the outcome be.

I am amazed with the length and breath and depth of KES works now. I have watched most of her recent famous works and noticed that she loves to delve into time/space jumps especially lately.
I wouldn’t have enjoyed this latest gem if I did not have the support that you and your team of loyal commenters have contributed by the minute details explained and with beautiful screenshots and gifs too to emphasise the relevant points!
I just wish I knew you all then when I was watching Memories of Alhambra! I was whipped out in that one!
Thank you for my Happy Ending😍
I will have my cherry now by gazing at your sugar and cakewalk gif!

  18. Oh I just back read all the posts ! Am impressed again!

    @packmule3
You are so right! TE wears a dress and high heels for the very first time in the show! Reminds me of those times you see royalty on tv all nicely dressed up with long flowing dresses and nice spring jackets all out to meet the public! She was getting comfortable in her new role!
I had a laugh when you wrote “…you should know what that means” to Lady Noh. Of course now that Packmule3 mentions it I get the “finesse” meaning too😂

@agdr3 hear hear to twins too 😁

  19. @packmule3, thank you for making my breakfast sweeter. I agree with @Phoenix that TE being queen was very subtle. I like your logical deductions that it was going to happen. Please accept some special coffee and buttery mini pastries. 🍪🍪☕🥐🥐

I’m glad that you agree with the innuendos. I hope Lady Noh will have a toast herself to the royal ancestral shrine. 🥂 I didn’t have the impression that she retained her memories because of the mask TE hid beneath. I thought rather that Lady Noh was pleased that LG found someone to share his personal belongings (ha!) with and she wanted, with the nightcap (wild ginseng liquor?), to make it so.

I think I’ll miss the Lady Noh/LG interactions as much as anything else, starting with the stink-eye and LG’s smirk early on.

  20. @Fern I’ll miss Lady Noh and LG’s interactions too. She is such a stern exterior and soft inside lovable character😊

  21. In my imagination, Tae Eul’s future will include “Taekwando with the Queen” sessions for children of the kingdom. She will use the platform not only to promote physical fitness, but the five tenants of taekwando: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit.

I think that Tae Eul is very tuned in to Lee Gon’s life being a lonely one, so will boldly stand by his side. No previous records for Tae Eul in Corea? Lee Gon could declare her records (or lack thereof) classified information and that is that. King’s order. And who would dare require Lee Gon’s queen to be fingerprinted and submit to DNA analysis? Remember: Lee Gon doesn’t have a driver’s license because he issues them, as king. King Lee Gon doesn’t have an ID because he is who he is. I’d think by his word, the same would apply for Lee Gon’s queen. So the fact that Tae Eul and Luna have identical fingerprints and DNA wouldn’t be an issue, as long as Lee Gon can tell the difference and Luna is a loyal subject. As for TE and Luna looking alike? Twins, raised separately. The fact that Luna was a foundling makes this explanation believable.

  22. @Fern and @Phoenix, me three! I love Lady Noh especially her scenes with LG. 🥰 They were almost as funny as JY and ES’ scenes. 😁 I’ve loved her since Coffee Prince. God bless her!

  23. Oh that’s cool @Welmaris! Who would question a King especially about his Queen? 😎 I can totally imagine Queen TE teaching Taekwando to kids in KOC.

@Carolstar! Good pick up on the trench coat bump! That’s what’s going to happen one day because of the weekend getaways. 😱😉

  24. @Welmaris, Taekwando with the Queen is a great idea! I can also imagine her and JY teaching a group of children who include their own, since I don’t think JY and Myeong Seung-ah are far behind LG and TE. And you have imagined a good solution to the double problem with Luna, too. All hail Queen Tae Eul! 🥂

  25. @ Fern @ Phoenix @agdr3 me four please!
I simply adore Court Lady Noh 😍 I loved the way she said “no two shots” and “no returns”. The subbing did not reveal the impact of the way she said it as I think it’s a korean slang or improvisation of the word play! For that we need a korean speaker to explain to us I think.
I love all of CLN antics as she shows off such grandmothery vibes!

This grand dame Kim Young Ok is highly venerated and adored by Korean netizens as well as she has done a gazillion acting roles!

    @Welmaris
Thank you. I love your fanfic in eps15/16 thread and what you wrote here too. Definitely as A Queen she wouldn’t need any ID or records as per King’s Order!

  26. @agdr3 ! I have @packmule3 to thank for ’cause she laid out all the vital screenshots and I was starting at that particular one and then it hit me🤣🤣

  27. It was a good one @Carolstar ☺️👍🏻

  28. Hello! Newbie here…unlurking to drop this comment. I accidentally came across this beautiful space trying to escape all the negativity in other review pages. @packmule3 thank you for all your detailed explanations.Your blog posts and weekend episodes were the highlights of my week during this quarantine. I would also like to thank all the other regular members who were so welcoming.

I agree with your point about divine intervention. I think that is why future LT meets JTE at the end of episode 10 and gives her flowers. The flowers disappearing ensured that JTE takes things into her own hand and she goes with LL.

I would also like to hear your perspective about the making of the drama and the overall review of the script(things which could have been better in your view). While watching KES previous work Goblin I realised how put together things were from the beginning. I personally feel that they did waste some amount of screentime in unneccessary things uptill episode 8. Things really came together in the later episodes.Anyways I totally love this drama even more when I go back and rewatch the inital episodes as things make more sense.

  29. Hey, ever since I started watching King Eternal Monarch from its premier. I’ve really enjoyed reading all your questions and analyses. I love it. I constantly check the page for updates. Thank you so much. You’re one of the reasons why my day brightens!

  30. You’re welcome.

Yes, the “divine intervention” was always there trying to help out TaeEul AND Lee Gon…whether the viewers got that point or not. For instance, you saw how the glass ceiling broke and a shard of glass cut LL’s hand. That was divine intervention. Nothing changed then for Lee Lim. Nari’s prediction when she read Lee Lim’s palm still held true. She said, “This scar connected with your fate line, and became your new fate.”

    LL: What kind of fate?
Nari: Your fate is to commit treason if it were the old times.
    LL: Will it succeed?
Nari: Well, that’s the problem. You’re fated to be beheaded, I mean, if it were the old times.
LL: That fate has already passed. (This is one of the reasons he told LG that he “transcended” death. He thought he escaped death.) I took part in the beheading myself. Although it was foolish of me to do so. I should have trusted myself and killed the crown prince first.

So while Lee Gon and TaeEul had divine providence helping them, Lee Lim was in disfavor with the gods and Fate. Of course, this was to be expected from the beginning. The King warned him to be afraid of the punishment of the gods and he just laughed it off.

    🙂

As for negativity, Plato was right when he said, “An empty vessel makes the loudest sound, so they that have the least wit are the greatest babblers.” People who didn’t get this drama remain the noisiest squawkers. Just learn to tune them out for your sanity.

And yes, this drama was meant to be re-watched to appreciate it. I think the late addition of the director (was it Table122000 who told us?) made a BIG difference in how the script/story was presented. But it hardly seems fair to rate the overall drama when we know that there were two, three directors at the helm. It’s like getting mad at Chef A for burning the pot roast when I knew that Chef B was the one who put it in the oven at 430°F.

  31. Thank you. Stick around then. There’s another post on Lee Gon’s concept of love coming up.

  32. @packmule! I’m over here cheering for you over this post, just like the way ES was when attending LG’s New Year speech! Thank you for clearing this up, and tying up everything neatly. Now it makes sense that TE wears the plum blossom necklace before she goes into the portal with LL. She was ready to take up the role of queen then.

Your option 6 made me think of how TE’s father always referred to LG as “the man with the horse”. TE is actually born in the year of the horse. Little did her dad know that LG was the man with THE horse… his own daughter.

  33. Right? She put on her necklace before she drove away. She was ready to “embrace her fate.” She told him that she wanted to wear the necklace on a “glorious” day. She added, “When I don’t have any wounds.”

So it didn’t make sense that, after the life-and-death crisis, she would suddenly back-pedal and settle for “dating” for the rest of her life.

I didn’t know that TaeEul was born on the year of the horse. That’s great detail right there. No wonder Maximus didn’t like her. It knew that she was a chief rival. 🙂

  34. @packmule: YES! I always thought the plum blossom necklace was a reminder of his proposal to her. Since wearing it means she bears the royal symbol of KOC. Wouldn’t have made sense for her to do all that, and just spend the rest of her life gallivanting around in different worlds.

And LOL, I got curious after LG mentioned about the year of the rat in his New Year speech, so I went to check just for fun, since LG conveniently rattles off all their birthdays in the phone call to the police. King Lee Ho is a dragon I think , which is rather fitting for a king. SJH is a snake, reminds me of how she thwarts LL’s plan using poison. LL and LG are… rabbits! So many rabbit references in this show.

  35. Thanks for this post! I agree. We were shown TE/LG doing all the stuff they skipped, dating and taking their relationship day by day for a bit. That meant not arriving in Corea on a whim and causing all sorts of chaos (but the flute had other plans). But even with TE’s unexpected arrival, it was clear LG was still thinking about the future of his line. He’s a truthful guy, and I don’t recall seeing a trace of tension in him when speaking with Lady Noh. His face (and words) practically said “she’s the one so don’t worry” and Lady Noh could tell! The biggest priority was hiding TE’s face so they didn’t face questions in that specific moment.

And about Luna living in Corea, I felt like we were shown enough about her that was meant to be reassuring. These two doppelgangers had a strange bond, hence the Gemini constellation IMO. TE chose to forgive Luna on little more than instinct. Conversely, Luna chose to protect TE’s dad for little in return. She received temporary care that was really meant for TE, but Luna accepted that. Luna also didn’t have as hard a time believing in parallel worlds as TE did. I feel like these two would get on the same wavelength quickly, and that Luna might be told the truth point blank. And the fact that Luna’s abandonment was never explained works in the main characters’ favor. It makes it easier to create an identity for TE.

They even had LG’s old secretary become PM. She won’t unconditionally take LG’s side anymore, but if he needed an ally in the government to avoid enemies digging into the queen’s past, he could work to bring her into the fold.

At any rate, I feel like the show was trying to leave us with an impression more than anything. Namely: “do you really think these two won’t find a solution to their situation, something they can work with, no matter what comes their way?” For me, the show nailed that sentiment. The ending shot of their aged hands was the perfect payoff for me.

Responding to the name drop in the “Tae Eul with Lee Lim” post – I’m a she for future reference 😊

  36. @Carolstar – I know what you mean regarding Memories of the Alhambra! I still try to figure out what happened. Supposedly, 2nd season of MOA began and it should debut November this year!

  37. Wait what? @FanOfTKEM there’s a second season for MOA? I thought it was done and dusted? PSH should be filming Sisyphus The Myth with Cho SeungWoo in July? How can she film 2 dramas concurrently? Unless she’s already finished MOA S2.

  38. Second season of Memories of the Alhambra? I doubt it.

The writer is better off writing another drama.

But before she starts on another Kdrama, I’ve to finish dissecting her “W” — when I’ve downtime.

Maybe this MOA 2 is spin-off? 😂😂 I wish viewers who didn’t understand the Season 1 would leave well alone. They won’t stop till they get the ending they want.

  39. Does anyone know what the piece of paper that SJ is holding when he was talking to Luna, by the bookstore? How did Luna get into trouble? Was a ticket, fine that she has to pay? Or perhaps, the police department has to pay the fine?

  40. I did another internet search for MoA season 2 and it’s a no-go. I just have to check many websites to get a better consensus. The open ended finale is fine with me. That love story was too tragic for me. I don’t think there should have been a love story; it didn’t make sense to me. There wasn’t much of Yoo Jin-woo’s character that would warrant such dedication from the Jung hee-joo. The saving grace character was Secretary Seo Jung-hoon. It was the 3rd K-Drama that I watched. I stuck through the end because I already invested so many hours into the story; the AR was new to me, and the special effects were impressive.

  41. @fan of TKEM: I think it was a parking ticket, incurred while she was on duty/on a stakeout. Had her particulars on it so SJ knew it was her bday.

  42. @FanOfTKEM did you read @packmule3’s explanation of the ending (MOA) here in BoD? I know a lot of people were dissatisfied with the finale but it seemed like a fitting conclusion. So I didn’t think it needed any resolution with a S2.

  43. I’m always grateful to this blog and for everyone who focused on the beautiful solution!I almost offer a thanksgiving mass for the happy ending! KES, thank you!

There’s this recent interview of Woo Do-hwan suggesting that to better enjoy TKEM, it should be watched from ep 1 then switch to ep 16. Kind of weird, I thought! I guess he’s referring to those who didn’t watch the live broadcast and those who will re-watch. Out of curiosity, I followed WDh – and it made some sense why such revelation!

We know that in the last part of ep 1 was the iconic hug of LG and TE in ROK. It was so clear that TE has no memory at all who is this good looking guy claiming to be a king. In ep 16, at that point when LG finally arrived in the only parallel world where there’s TE, he said
“I didn’t think you would remember me even if I find you. Even if you
forgot all about me, I would still want to see you. I was going to
tell you again if you forgot me”.

So ep 1, then jumping right at the ending story in ep 16 and go back to ep 2 where the scenes are mostly LG telling TE who he is. He wanted to stay longer in ROK to be with TE if not for his duties in the other world. TE has no memory at all just like what LG has expected in ep 16, thus he was surprised when TE cried, etc. Until half of ep 3, the scenes were still mostly about LG keep on convincing/telling TE about the Fate that are bound to happen.

Not sure if it’s just my subconscious mind, some kind of writing/story telling style or there might still be some more beautiful solution out there, almost hidden in KES wonderful fantasy!

  44. @Aly I am still refreshing @packmuke3’s blog everyday! It’s so addictive that I can’t put it down yet. As it is more clues are found!

@JT7 thanks for that wonderful find! There are 12 chinese zodiac signs and of course TaEul must be the horse! How fitting 😉 No wonder Maximus subbed her big time!
I must say I can still remember vividly the scene where Maximus refused TE’s offer of carrots! It is not easy to train horses to do that I am sure! And Maximus did it with such disdain🤣🤣
I do wonder though if TE having a horse zodiac was purposely set out by the writing and research team or it just randomly happened?!

@fan of TKEM if ever MOA or even W two worlds sequels come back..you bet I will be the first one camping here overnight 😅
Thank you @nrllee for telling us there’s an explanation for MOA in here. I will look for it when I am fully satiated with TKEM first hehe.

@packmule3 and @JT7 I know that the plum necklace was like the “proposal ring” so to speak but the Disney girl in me was so hoping they would pull off a wedding somehow but nevermind I got all the fanfics and the options to comfort me by so thank you.

I am off to read now @Packmule3 latest “love offer”🙂

  45. @JT7 – Thanks for the information. I thought it was a ticket. I appreciate the 2 year movement from when LG and JY went back to 1994. I like how the supporting characters developed from April 2020. ES and NR got married. But they did not have twins. ES was showing photos of his twin siblings who were in higher grade level in “elementary school”. PM and Luna becoming sisters; both have strong personalities and can put up with each other. As for their mom, she’s a saint for putting up with two daughters! It was a happy ending.

@nrllee – Thanks for the suggestion. I read a few of the articles and it has been helpful. Very glad to have found this outlet for understanding TKEM and MoA. My appreciation of TKEM is so much more if I had watched it without this blog. I might re-watch certain scenes of MoA to get a better understanding of the storyline.

  46. Hi @packmule3. I never accepted the suggestions offered by TKEM fans that
    1. TE did not want to move to KOC (cos she cannot imagine leaving her Dad, her work & her life there) or that
    2. she did not want to be Queen for whatever reason (e.g. TE being a modern woman)

For the simple reason that the Drama clearly showed she was in fact willing to risk her life, without any guarantee that she will emerge from the InBetweenPlace or that she will have the chance to be with LG. What the Drama clearly showed in that last talk with SJ was her determination to be with LG and that if she stayed in ROK at that time, she was good as dead with what she felt.

I cannot say it enough. I love TKEM. Despite the plot holes, gaffe & unnecessary segments. It is just that my dissatisfaction with the happy ending was on the major characters. How is it that the conclusion for the side characters were much more straight forward than the pair that mattered the most. ES & Nari got it going; JY & EA had a thrilling romance going on. But SJ & Luna? Where did that come from? Was it even necessary?

I did not need to see an actual wedding. A simple ring on their aged old hands would have sufficed. This is not spoon feeding. Cos then I would still surmise that at some point Luna died. She got a life makeover, had a family, etc.. – that was nice – so she became happy. But she had to die, as what narrative offered, so TE can openly come to KOC. That development supports the equation of balance. Luna alive in KOC did not live in a bubble. Other people knew about her. So a clean break from her character was a simple solution for an opening for TE. Sorry am not a fan of the PR lady creatively making up stories etc…or SJ & Luna going away, etc… to me these are extrapolations on our part that would have been unnecessary had the writer given us a more sensical execution of the happy ending.

It was also important (to me) that the heir issue is resolved beyond reasonable doubt. LG has shown he is a responsible monarch. And as you have wonderfully discoursed on the significance of the “I will never be indebted to you” scene with PM, then producing an heir is an imperative. Otherwise, the “eternal” component of the title would not have been justified. Again, a simple ring on their aged fingers would have signified this in substance – at least to me.

My other underwhelming reaction was with the flute. It is another major character in the story, right? With so much gravitas about its story since episode 1, it would have been a nice bookend if the Drama showed a more epic use for it when it became whole again.

I like that Drama showed that with the OTP dropping in ROK saved young SJ from his tragic accident and corrected his path. But my wild wish was to see something of historical significance about the flute summoning peace & order in the world. Hear me out. Think Forrest Gump. When it was intimated that Gump was the inspiration for Elvis Presley’s gyrating dance style? Or he was elemental in the Ping Pong Diplomacy? Why can’t the flute cause peace over some territory (e.g. EDSA PH Revolution or the Collapse of the Berlin Wall or something less controversial) or a discovery of penicillin or the shoot-up of K-Pop?! Like LG’s whip inspiring Gangnam Style dance craze? Am sure you get my drift. I’d rather have those scenes or ideas instead of Chief Park’s reveal of his solitude & loneliness.

Again thank you for this blog. I looove the in-depth & respectful discussions here. Excited for KGE’s next project – a historical musical – wow! Looking forward to what’s next for LMH.

ps: Oh! And happy blessed birthday to LMH!

  47. Thank you so much for your point of view for this series. I really loved and enjoy every word of it. Specially, I do review + reaction on this series too but after reading all your point of view. I think my observance was not so deep to think that happy ending its not happy for me because I’m disappointed when the ending show us that they just meet up every weekend and travel to every universe.

But after reading your side. It become more sense now that yeah! It’s happy ending for LG at TE after all.

    God blessed!

  48. It is just me or someone else felt that even though that’s a happy ending I didn’t feel happy at all.

I counted 17 times in the show were the mention of an heir or wedding was referenced (I’ve watched 4 times already thanks to the quarantine). So I kind of felt robbed of that visually.

@packmule3 explained beautifully how that was actually the ending if you just use your imagination and perception but it still left me hanging.

I second point is the Lady Noh sub-plot. I was hoping to see more about it, as to why Lee Gon grandfather bought her to the Kingdom of Korean. I would have preferred to see this than talking about loneliness of Chief Park.

I hope the novel that is going to be released this week give more details about those two points.

  49. I’ve come late to the party but I want to thank everyone for the explanations of this sometimes maddening but so-worth-it series, which I read as I watched it in the last couple of weeks.

I tried to watch TKEM when it came out in April but, being in the midst of the lockdown and feeling more and more angst-y every day, it was just too heavy–the first bloody scenes had me running for more escapist and lighter fare. I’m glad I found my way back to it, (especially since I managed to watch Goblin prior to starting it again). I’m thinking maybe that’s why it didn’t do well in the ratings at the time (because many of us then couldn’t handle the immediate scenes of murder and what promised to be a complicated storyline) and why it is gaining more traction now as things are easing up.

On first viewing, the ending bothered me because I wanted more—a scene of married life in the palace or, as one poster said above, even a quick shot of hands bearing wedding rings. But I realize now that would have opened up an entirely different storyline that would have had to concentrate on the logistics of their life together (and would take a good chunk of an episode to explain, losing the momentum of their getting together).

For instance: The royal court could easily take care of the doppelganger issue and Tae-eul’s backstory (they controlled all surveillance footage in the kingdom so I assume they could just give her a new KOC identity and perhaps, with a makeover, a new non-Luna look). But I’m not sure a workable solution would also require TE to evade further public scrutiny by becoming a “private person,” as one person proposed above. She is someone who needs to be be involved, to use her talents. I can’t see her sitting in the study the rest of her life. She would want to be involved in the kingdom, to help LG, else I think she would be bored.

The remaining problem, which KES obviously didn’t want to touch, is what happens with TE’s dad. Sure you can tell your dad you’re marrying a guy and moving to the States, but how would you explain being unreachable? It’s not like pioneer days when you left home and never looked back. Cell phones now make everyone accessible. (Unless you say you’ve gone into the witness protection program, assuming there is something like that in Korea?) And it would be difficult to leave your widowed father and not know how he was for days at a time, especially as he got older. Even if you went through the portal once a week and called him from the payphone, it might be days before you would know if he had had an emergency. So, would you bring him to the KOC with you? It opens up questions that really didn’t need to be answered in the show. It’s best not to think about it–instead, look, our happy pair is walking together through the past, dressed to the nines (or in palm leaves)…

Finally, it struck me today that of course TE is going to marry LG because: the flute has to be passed down. He can’t just name someone else in his family to be his next-in-line and hand over the flute as part of their inheritance. The flute has to stay in his immediate family. It is their legacy and burden. She knows how important that is, not only to LG or the KOC, but to the fate of the world itself. And she already seemed ready to play the role of queen—she did, after all, have that picture of herself taken in royal robes, which she juxtaposed next to the royal currency bearing LG’s portrait. So, all those weekends where they’re taking off together are all the dates they missed, on their way to marriage, however they are able to manage it.

  50. thanks, BethB. I agree. 🙂

I still have to post on Lee Gon’s letter. I keep putting it off.

  51. I was looking for the Kim Sowol’s poem and found your blog instead!
So happy to read this post, even though I am late in the TKEM party!
I haven’t been this hooked since The Fringe Series…!

I agree that Tae Eul would become his Queen, but after I watched TKEM a second time. The fist time I was a bit heartbroken and numb by the end.

Still, I will read all your analysis in order to see if my theories / thoughts are answered by your posts!

Thank you for giving us details about the Korean culture, I am Greek so I don’t know much – but a quick learner too, like pyeha ! (lol)

I will be back for more thoughts on TKEM!

  52. Ladies,
After reading many of your posts, I wanted to share some of my conclusions too!

I was coming to the approach of the scenario, but as a fact, that Tae Eul would become the Queen and produce an Heir too. They repeat it too many times… And if we consider that there was a Time Loop all along, in the fixed timeline (episode 16), she indeed met again Jo Yeong with the other Royal Guards, but also Lady Noh. That means they would return again to KoC.

I did not have a problem with the plot though. I totally got it from the very beginning. I even started to understand that LG we get to see in 2019 saved little LG back in 1994 when in epi. 12 LG and TE wore the masks in the building TE was captured by LL’s minions, where CCGI was checking for information and next when TE gave LG the jacket in epi. 13.
That happened before LG understood it for himself! (LMAO!)

As for the yoyo boy / deity / Fate. I was aware that he manipulated their lives both in KoC and RoK. He had a red string and in Greek Mythology the Moirai [Clotho, (“spinner”), Lachesis (“allotter”) and Atropos (“the unturnable”, a metaphor for death] aka the Fates had a red string too, but their actions were kinda different.

I agree the yoyo boy / girl was pretty close both to LG and TE e.g. in the rowing contest showed that he wanted LG to win, the funeral e.t.c. (KoC) and with the bullying to SJ (RoK).
That shows / underlines that TE was very significant to LG in order to fulfill his destiny.

And I am not even getting into the Math analysis about 0 and 1. (I noticed the symbol in Lee Gon’s name in Korean is 01, when I watched the episodes for the second time, and the Crossroad / cross / zero that TE was standing in Episodes 11 + 12, which are my most favorites in the Series.)

At the same time, let’s remember: Little LG from 1994 listened to the SOUND of the flute the night of his father’s assassination and for that reason he went to the scene. The same sound was also heard in 2019, when LG went to the Bamboo Forest looking for Luna / the white rabbit before he found the Obelisks.

All the above made me realize that it was a declaration that LG is / was the Rightful owner of the flute and the worthy one to have it!

Although LG’s father didn’t believe in the Flute, he was a Kind and Virtuous King, hence his teaching about the meaning of the story engraved to the 4 Tigers SWORD.

The last part that Lee Lim explained to little LG was also their biggest difference.

Lee Lim’s envy for power, immortality and being (a nasty) God himself against LG’s kindness, justice, goodness and being sincere. Attributes a Monarch should have.

LG had them all, that’s why he wanted to sacrifice himself in order to save the parallel words in episode 15.

What he didn’t know was that:
JY decided to following him to wherever battlefield LG would go.
SJ decided to help LG and not LL.
TE decided to die in the Between World, so as not to forget LG. She was devastated, but she chose to stand beside LG in order not to feel alone. Queen material already!

LG was MEANT to meet TE. It was their Destiny to be together and in Love. Lady Noh shared with TE that she was leading him to his Destiny and she should take care of him.

Let’s not forget that Lady Noh knew already that LG would save little LG in 1994 and kept it a secret for so many years.

I also believe that because LG with JY and TE used the Passage in Between worlds, that was the reason they didn’t forget the previous timelines, when they returned to their now solid TL in 2020 as well.

So, it is not a coincidence that when LG and TE in the new Timeline entered KoC, JY was there with the Royal Guard. LG said almost the exact same things to them, warning at the same time JΥ about TE being with him… History repeating itself, right?

That means that they would return to KoC again. The Flute / Divide Intervention / Fate wanted them to reach the end of their long road / destination together and they finally did.

What made the most impact to me is that after many years, we get to see on screen a Love Story that is in its essence True and Pure.

Their Love overcomes all the obstacles in order the protagonists to be together in the end.

Love prevails, Love Heals. Lee Gon and Tae Eul following their Destiny, made me realize that WE should follow OURS no matter what…

So my Love for the Series will be Eternal…!

I just hope that Netflix will make Studio Dragon reconsider doing a Season 2 and maybe just maybe we get to see some of these theories we shared on screen again!

I don’t mind if we have a spin off series as well, as long it has JY or ES in it.

    Have a nice day Ladies!

You make my heartache more bearable…

    I salute you from Greece!

  53. I know I’m behind everyone else in having watched this lovely series, but better late than never.  Since I’m an English speaker I rely heavily on the subtitles and there was one instance where I know I missed something important because there were none.  In the last episode, Kang Hyeon-min tracks down Luna/Jeong Tae-eul in the “corrected” Kingdom of Corea, outside the Haesong Used Book store on May 27, 2022.  Kang Hyeon-min shows Luna a document after indicating the Chief sent him to ‘cuff’ her.  I don’t know if he meant cuff as to hit her on the head in reprimand, or cuff as in handcuff her.  I suspect whatever that document says is fairly important.  Kang Hyeon-min told Luna he knew it was her birthday because the document had it listed.  Is there anyone who has translated that or at least said what it’s supposed to be?

  54. Hello Silverthorne,

Good morning. I read it somewhere in these threads but I cannot remember who told it but the answer to your question is the following:

It was a parking fine because Lune didn’t pay for the amount needed when she was chasing a suspect. It has her personal data that’s why Hyeon Min knew about her birthday.

Also, if you check again you will see that in the old timeline Lee Gon saw that scene…from the future, when the yoyo boy / girl stared at him via the video.

He was looking for the new timeline’s bookstore and he couldn’t find it at all, because it was not there yet.

What he found instead was the bookstore that was owned by Lee Lim’s traitor buddy at the same place. The reason his uncle was murdered because he discovered it by accident.

    Hope I helped!

  55. Thanks, @ Cleopatra for answering @ Silverthorne’s question.

Yes, IIRC the document was just a list of Luna’s parking violations. Her Date of Birth was on the documents.

I think he meant to handcuff her (as a joke. Nothing kinky there 😂) and bring her to the precinct but yeah, he probably wanted to “box her ears” too for accumulating the parking tickets (while on police duty/stake-outs?).

Trivia: In Korea (and I guess the fictional Kingdom of Corea), the DOB is the first few digits of their identity card number. The social security number in the US do NOT have such info.

  56. Thank you, @Cleopatra and @packmule3! I definitely remembered that when Lee Gon saw it the date was way in the future and he was…surprised? Freaked out? Taken aback? Haha, all of the above? I think even funnier is that I bet Luna in the corrected future is also a ‘Liberal Arts Student’ and is thrilled to grab a birthday present from the bookstore.

  57. Kalimera from my part of the world!

You are welcome @packmule3! For TKEM I am always happy to answer any questions.

    @Silverthorne,

I think at that moment he kinda realized, but wasn’t sure yet, that the concept of Time existed regarding Manpasikjeok flute and its abilities. The assassination of his Uncle and Tae Eul’s kidnapping made him forgotten it for a while. But later one he actualized the travel in time parameter.

Well, I think what we saw is that Hyeon Min and Luna was meant to be together, as @packmule3 has stated several times before. (Check the thread where she talks about the bully with the yoyo vs the boy / girl with the yoyo.)

Well, she might be a “Liberal Arts Student” but she is not Tae Eul.

I am 1000% fan of our favorite OTP: Lee Gon and Tae Eul.
I root for their love for several reasons that are mentioned in this blog and echo my thoughts and sentiments in several blog posts I have also participated!

Good to see though, another TKEM fan! Welcome to BOD!
