  1. Whaaaaat? 😱 Does she get beheaded after all because she pretended to be a man? 😭

I can’t stop it now, I can take it for us. It’ll be a memorable drama for me then without my happy ending. 🙁

Thanks for the heads up! 🙇🏻‍♀️

  2. Not beheaded… more like that —

Moonlight Scarlet Fever(?) drama with IU and Lee Joonki.

    Thank you, agdr03.

  3. I didn’t watch that drama but I read that IU died and that the King wasn’t together with her anymore. So sad, after all that relationship build up. 🙁

Anyway there’s so many cdramas out that my head is spinning 😂

  4. I’ve had this drama on my watch list and now with the news of an unsatisfying ending I am glad that I waited on this drama. There were some mixed reports about the ending with some saying it was good and some saying it was bad.I have investigated and read a recap of the final episode. I can see why many viewers found it unsatisfying. Open ending. Thanks for the warning, @packmule3. I am disappointed because I like actor Wang Anyu who plays the second lead in this drama and I was looking forward to seeing him again, plus everyone was saying that the script and acting were good in this drama. The curse of the c-drama crappy ending strikes again. What a shame. I also had The Sleepless Princess on my watch list and there are reports of an unsatisfying ending for that drama as well. The drama that I am most looking forward to is Dating In The Kitchen (which I hope will be released before the end of 2020) thank goodness that drama should definitely have a happy ending. For people who are super invested in The Heiress, here’s what I read about the ending.

    SPOILERS AHEAD:

The good news: No Death for the leads.
The bad news: Main leads are not together at the end. It is an open ending. Basically, FL leaves ML and goes away. FL returns after 3 years and it looks like she wants to reconcile with male lead. ML goes to meet FL and they just miss each other. End of drama. Will they somehow meet again after this near miss? Up to the viewer to decide/write their own personal ending.

Thanks for the warning and the spoilers, everyone. I’m ok with open or sad endings if there’s been enough preempting of it,… enough subtle warnings etc. What I hate is if show misleads us viewers into expecting a bright end to only find a dark tunnel.

On the whole, an open ending is about the most realistic ending, unless show can really make ML the King with overall say, who can get whatever person into his court that he wishes. If this scenario is not possible, then neither is a public, happily ever after. Either they get together in secret (not satisfying) and live their lives in hiding, or not at all.

  6. Thanks for the update, @Table122000.

Ugh! I’m not in the mood now for open endings. With so many uncertainties up ahead, I want everything crystal clear and unambiguous.
And a Season 2 doesn’t make sense since part of the fun of this drama is that she was pretending to be a boy. Wasn’t her cover already blown? I can’t imagine 24 episodes revolving just around the ML and FL’s reunion, when that should have been settled in Season 1.

Well, at least, we still have Jerry Yan’s drama.

  7. No problem. I’m not a fan of open endings- I need closure in my dramas. So I can understand why a lot of the viewers were not satisfied with the ending. I can (grudgingly) accept them in certain circumstances if, like @GrowingBeautifully says, the groundwork has been laid in the drama and it makes sense within the context of the drama, and the scene is well written.
I will wait to read the final reviews of this drama from the other people here at BOD.

  8. The open-ended ending was disappointing but I think they will get together in the end.

The story could have ended when she left town and left it as a solid sad ending. Why bother showing her come back to his city after three years of soul searching and seeing that he is still true to her, if not to show there is still hope? He has stayed loyal and doggedly searched for her. She still has feelings for him and left the token to show him she is back. He will find her like he has always done time and time again.

It was a sweet sparkling romance to the end. Don’t write it off yet.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m a big fan of BOD and your drama insight.

  9. Thanks for the ending info @Table122000. That doesn’t sound nice but yeah they can meet again for sure. But after all that trouble though. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was interested in The Sleepless Princess too because of the ML, he was in LoveO2O as one of Xiao Nai’s best friend and he looked liked he’s matured as an actor judging from the clips that I saw but bummer because I read about the ending too.

What’s with the crappy ending in some cdramas? Meteor Garden cdrama had it too. I was scratching my head at the final episode.

Oh I’m definitely interested in Dating In The Kitchen because I love Zhao Lusi. But, is the ML there married already? Anyway I’ll definitely check it out for her. Thanks 😊

  10. Had a quick look at the ending of The Heiress.

Did not think much of the amnesia bit.

Would agree it was not very good as an ending as there was no clarity. It’s nearly as bad as the 3 hr ending of the first part of “Lost” which told you nothing.

However, my impression is that it is simply the end of Part 1 and will lead to a follow-on sequel.

Starting to get into “Maiden Holmes”, which I prefer. A lot more fun.
This is an intelligent detective series.

  11. Thanks for that recommendation @HEHarry I’ll check out Maiden Homes. 😊

I’m interested in it too. This is what I mean by there’s so many cdramas out recently that I want to check out and that’s why my head is spinning 😁

  12. @agdr03 Yes, there seems to be a resurgence of crappy endings in the C Dramas lately. It had died down for a while, but now I see a lot of complaints about unsatisfactory endings. I really don’t know why Chinese drama writers can’t seem to get it together. The plot set ups are often interesting but then things break down in execution. Prime example is the ending of Meteor Garden 2018. I loved that we got a wedding and some scenes of their married life, but the execution was terrible! I was like, what the hell did I just watch?!, LOL! There’s a lot to love about that drama but it definitely had some issues. And I’ll agree with you that so many C Dramas are being released right now. Looks like the last 4 months of 2020 will have a lot of dramas. (Hopefully with satisfying endings)

@HEHarry, thanks for the rec on Maiden Holmes. I just saw it’s now available at Viki and they are getting the subs from the content provider so no waiting. Surprisingly, it looks like Viki got the rights for the VIP schedule for Maiden Holmes as there are more eps available there than at Tencent YT. The plotline is giving me Miss Truth vibes, but much lighter. FL Sebrina Chen has 2 currently airing dramas now where she is cross dressing. Maiden Holmes and My Unicorn Girl.

For Dating In The Kitchen, the ML character is single. I watched the source film a while ago and enjoyed it. I think there were enough things hinted at in the film that they could expand upon for a drama version and the trailers look soo good! I’m really excited to check it out.

  13. @Table122000, I loved Meteor Garden 2018 except for the last episode 😁 I’m glad to know we felt the same way.

I can only hope and pray that the surge of cdramas won’t mean the ending is not satisfying at all. 🤞🏻

Sorry but I meant the ML in Dating In The Kitchen is married in real life already. I’ll be watching it definitely though. 😊I’m interested in My Unicorn Girl too but I need to sort myself out because there’s so many dramas I want to watch but not enough time. 😩

  14. @agdr03 I don’t know if the ML of Dating In The Kitchen is married in real life or not. I checked his bio in MDL and Wikipedia and there is no info about any marriage or girlfriends.

As for the C Dramas, don’t stress yourself out about them. They will be waiting for you when you are ready/have the time. Actually, it’s probably good to wait until these dramas have finished airing because of all the unsatisfactory endings lately. At least that way you are able to make an informed choice rather than waste your time. I just heard that Dance of the Phoenix had a very bad ending and there are so many complaints. So that makes unsatisfactory endings for 3 recent dramas that I know of. But yeah, there are a lot of light, breezy C dramas out right now. I watched the trailer for My Unicorn Girl and it looked cute. I checked out the first episode on IQIYI. Pretty cute, but the subtitles were a bit clunky for me, so I will probably wait for the EDITED Viki subs for that drama as they were a bit smoother than the IQIYI subs.
I’m really wanting a good rom com at the moment. Sun Qian’s new drama Way Back Into Love just started and it looks promising. (She’s the FL from Dr. Cutie) It’s available on YouTube and Viki. The original TW version has a HEA, so this drama should too. They made some changes for the China version but (hopefully) not the end. And I hope it is satisfying and not weird(Meteor Garden 2018, looking at you).

  15. Waiting for the series to end is good in theory, but harder in practice. On a bored moment I tend to flick through a few first episodes to see what catches my attention. The writers always put effort into the first episodes, then it tends to fade out e.g. The Heiress.

Currently enjoying Maiden Holmes. Same actress as in My Unicorn Girl. Thought that the serial killer thread was good. Nice relationship between ML and FL.

Had a quick look at Way Back Into Love, but much preferred Sun Qian in Dr Cutie as she was able to use a wide range of facial expressions and generally have more fun.

  16. Arrggghhh like The King in Love 😂. No wonder BOD is aborting 🤣.

At this point I would just ask for a death ending rather than an open ending. Be conclusive, dramas please!

  17. Thanks @Table122000! ☺️ I think I will just take my time because I really don’t like open endings, I’m a sucker for HEA. 😊

I’m interested in My Unicorn Girl (it has HEA) , Maiden Holmes, Way Back Into Love. There’s a couple more but I can’t remember the title. 😁

  18. Do you remember the film “Just Like Heaven” with Reese Witherspoon. Really looks there is going to be a very unhappy ending, right up till the last moment.

I think a HEA or funny ending makes you feel well with the world, rather than lack of clarity.

  19. @HEHarry, I’d rather it be a clear ending than me wondering the what if’s. ☺️ I like HEA because it makes me happy about watching the whole series.

That ending for Just Like Heaven was beautiful, as beautiful as the garden David made. 😍

  20. @Table122000, I’ve started on My Unicorn Girl and I like it. ☺️ I have a soft spot for Darren Chen. 😍 Its good Viki’s got most of the episodes there and it’s only 24 episodes too.

  21. Thank-you so much for the alert! I’ve been watching The Heiress following the recommendation here some time ago, but will definitely abort now. I find the real world pretty uncertain and traumatic as it is, so want to avoid that in my escape world. Sure… emotional pain can deepen the characters and story, but please don’t leave me emotionally scarred (looking at you, Sungmo, in He’s Psychometric).

I just started watching Kdramas and Cdramas during the lock-down and fortunately found this blog early on. I’ve been lurking for the past 6 months – this is my first time posting. I appreciate that A LOT of work goes into this blog so I’m hesitant to make a request: is it possible to have a reference page which lists the dramas you guys have watched with some simple pointers as to what to expect, especially the ending (happy, tragic, open). That way I would know which ones to avoid.

Oh, I also wanted to say that my 90-year-old mother became a Yang Yang fangirl after Love O2O (which we watched because of this blog). She had never watched an asian drama in her life before, and now she re-watches scenes from Love O2O whenever she needs a pick-me-up. It’s wonderful how we humans share a common sense of ‘beauty’ no matter the race or culture. I recently found and shared with her this amazing video from Yang Yang’s graduation performance of the Dance of the Dandelion at his performing arts university (in 2012?).

    https://youtu.be/-bBe7vnxtQI

Apologies for posting here – the Love O2O and Yang Yang threads are both closed to comments, but it’s so beautiful that I wanted to share!

  22. Welcome @Rebecca! Thanks for that video of Yang Yang. I always forget that he studied as a dancer first and then became an actor. I’m looking forward to his next drama with Dilraba. It’s based on a novel by Gu Man, who also wrote the novel that Love O20 is based on.

@adgr03 Glad to know you are enjoying My Unicorn Girl. I have it on my watch list for later as I find the IQIYI subs clunky, so I’m going to wait for the EDITED Viki subs. It’s going another long wait, just like it was for the edited version of Dr. Cutie.

But I’m not going to wait for Dating in the Kitchen! They released another trailer today and ooh, this drama looks soo good! I’m really excited for this drama! Zhao Lusi is just too cute! I think this is going to be a real breakout role for her from what I’ve seen in the trailers. She does comedy so well. The ML Lin Shen looks good too. And some nice kiss scenes. (Please, Tencent, don’t cut them out!) I think this might turn out to be my fave drama of 2020 if it lives up to the trailers. Rumor is that it will be released before the end of September, and I hope that is true. For anyone interested, here’s the link for the 3 trailers that have been released. The first 2 have English subs, but the last one does not.

  23. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Welcome @Rebecca! Glad you like the popular threads here. I’ve only just recently gotten more into cdramas myself. And now, because of this place, maybe will try more jdramas too.

@Table122000 LOL Thanks for the link to the previews of Dating in the Kitchen. They had be chortling 😂 so much, my son who shares the space with me was probably annoyed. 🤪 😬

  24. @Rebecca! Welcome to BODs! 👋🏻

That’s so cool! You’re 90 year old Mom likes Yang Yang because of LoveO2O! Tell her she’s chosen a great guy to fangirl. 😉

  25. @Table122000, I can feel your excitement all the way here for DITK! 😁 But I’m with you! I really really like Zhao Lusi too. Loved her in The Romance of Tiger and Rose which is my first drama with her. She’s confident in romcoms and you won’t get bored with her. I’ll join you in watching it as soon as it’s subbed. 😄

  26. @GB and @agdr03

Yes, the trailers for Dating In the Kitchen are really cute. I’m trying not to get myself too hyped and keep expectations in check so I don’t get disappointed, because, well, C Dramas. Anyway, they subbed the last trailer. I plan to watch the drama at WeTV since their subs are usually up first. Here’s the link for the final trailer with English subs.

  27. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Thanks again @Table122000. I’ve put Dating in the Kitchen on my ‘To Watch’ list. 😀

  28. I still need to finish this drama before I start on Maiden Holmes ☺️ I’ve stopped at episode 1 of My Unicorn Girl.

Now after seeing this video, I’m starting to feel sad that they didn’t get together in the end. She has amnesia here because she fell during a fight with one of the clans. But look at Fifth Prince cooking for her and even feeding her. How can they not be together? 😭 Sigh.

    https://youtu.be/Wp3bJlLPMTo

  29. Ugh! The amnesia trope! What episode?

Is she really a good fighter though?

  30. That video is episode 22. She’s a good fighter but she tried to hide it in the early episodes because she didn’t want the Prince to discover that she’s a girl and that she’s a trained fighter.

I think she fell on a cliff, hit her head and into the water. The Prince and her had different battles to go to but they promised each other that they’ll be back but she had amnesia. ☹️

  31. Episode 22 ??!!! What a crappy way to put on the brakes on their romance and happy ending.

So, what do you think is a good episode to end the Cdrama? Ep 14??

  32. I don’t know yet whether she’ll recover from the amnesia but I think she does. But they still end up not being together in the end.

So let’s stop at episode 22 then, while their actually living as a married couple. 😂

But seriously, if it’s the ending already I’d chose episode 18, I think. She tried on a wedding outfit which was for the bride that she said she’d marry and Prince found her while she was wearing it. ☺️ He said she looked stunning and he even kissed her. He promised that he will ask his Father about the issue of her becoming a woman. After that they got called to different battles. But they hugged and promised to be back. That would have been better than not being together. Just me. 😊

  33. Did they get married before Ep 22? When did he ask permission from the King to marry her? Maybe that can be the ending?

  34. No they didn’t get married, he actually helped her in not marrying the lady.

He said he will ask after their separate battles. 😭

  35. Let’s end it at Ep 18 then. AS you said. Thanks.

What was the writer thinking? A second season?? But will the heroine still be a heiress then? Wasn’t her cover exposed already?

Wait. Let me focus now on Record of Youth. I’ve a few minutes to dictate some thoughts on it before I’ve to get ready for church. It’s Sundayyyyy!

  36. Deal! 😄

I think yes for second season if it’s an open ending like that. Wait, let me watch and I’ll come back to you. Just so my facts are correct. 😁

    👋🏻

  37. Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I stopped watching at episode 20 when I saw this post to abort mission, but I agree that episode 18 would have made a good ending. I don’t understand what the writer/director were doing here – the series started as a romcom but gives us a sad ending??

BTW, while waiting for the weekly subs of this drama, I watched Dr Cutie (another tip from you guys) and I think the FL disguised as a boy was much more believable in The Heiress. It helped that ‘she’ played her boy role as a dandy, and I think that worked well.

@Table122000 thanks for the trailers to DITK. I guess I’ll reinstate my WeTV subscription, which I cancelled after aborting The Heiress. Does anyone else have problems streaming WeTV? I only started using it recently and it often freezes due to slow streaming speeds. I’m watching in the UK (on an iPad) so maybe it’s just their UK server?

  38. Maybe the ending is all to do with communist ideology?

Think of a Russian film where the hero dies and leading lady lives on to continue serving the state. Same would apply in North Korea.

  39. Don’t give me a “communist ideology” theory at 10:40am on a Sunday, HEHarry. 😂😂

Because I’ll see you and raise you a coronavirus conspiracy theory. Whoever the virus hasn’t yet infected, the Chinese government wants to drive insane with the unhappy ending of “The Heiress.” 🤪

  40. @Rebecca- I watch WeTV on my laptop PC and sometimes the WeTV player is a bit slow to load. It doesn’t freeze though. Playback is usually fine for me. Are you using the Website or the App on your tablet? If you are using the App, perhaps that might be the issue?Just FYI, you can watch WeTV for free without ads if you don’t mind not having access to advance episodes (VIP status) I prefer to watch dramas on my laptop so I use the Website. I think it doesn’t have as many dramas available as the App, but I am not sure. The Website content is geo-restricted, so I think that people in other parts of the world see different dramas listed. Here is the link to the WeTV Website. Maybe you can try watching it on your PC and see if the problems persist.
    https://wetv.vip/en

  41. packmule3, sorry to spoil your breakfast with communist ideology!

Just been watching an outtake of Maiden Holmes where the leading man helps the leading lady down from a ladder. Sounds simple, but she is ticklish and can’t stop laughing. Will look out for this in the full episodes to see if they do any better.

  42. For anyone interested: Dating In The Kitchen is now out! Schedule is 2 Eps every Tuesday and Wednesday, 4 Eps a week total. VIP get advance episodes.
Available now at WeTV. Premieres Sept. 17, 2020 on Tencent Video Youtube. Also at Viki.
I watched the first episode and it was good! Zhao Lusi is too cute!

  43. Growing Beautifully (GB)

@Table122000 thanks for the update. I’m eager to watch something that looks like a true rom-com. 😀

  44. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Oh dear @Table122000, when they broke into Korean I lost it!!! 😂 🤣 😍

  45. @GrowingBeautifully-
Yes, that scene was hillarious! And when Male lead was like- That’s good flour!-hahaha! I have watched through Ep. 2 and oh, it is so hard to wait for the next episodes. They have added some new characters that were not in the original film for this drama version and I am interested to see where things go plotwise as well since they will be expanding a lot from the original film. I am liking the main leads a lot. I haven’t seen the male lead Lin Shen before but I am liking his performance here so far. The subtitles at WeTV are a little rough in a few places, but I get the main ideas. I’m too impatient to wait for the Edited Viki subs (since drama is so good) so I’m just enduring any subs issues this time and I plan to do a binge rewatch with Viki later on. It’s still a bit early, but if the next few episodes keep going with those hillarious moments I’m with you that this just may be the true rom-com that I have been waiting for all year.

  46. Hahaha I found it in Instagram 😂 I’m watching it too without delays. ☺️

    Hajima! 😂

    https://www.instagram.com/p/CFKFIA9FqsJ/?igshid=13bhi1l4xkdxz

  47. @Table122000 Thanks for the tips about WeTV. I’ve been watching on the WeTV app for iPad – even paid for subscription because I couldn’t wait for VIP content when watching The Heiress (before aborting at episode 20). Perhaps I will try watching via WeTV website on iPad browser or laptop, if I can’t wait for DITK to arrive on Viki, which streams so much better for me.

@Table122000 I also wanted to tell you that I recently watched Before We Get Married, and I read your comments from that old post/thread, which I completely agree with. It was the most riveting k/c/t drama series I’ve watched so far (but bear in mind I’ve only watched about 10 series since getting hooked on these during lock-down). The tension and chemistry between LM and LF was amazing, and such great kissing scenes. The musical score (often just piano, sometimes piano + strings) was the best I’ve heard and really enhanced the emotions during the intimate scenes.

News Flash: my 90-year-old mother and Yang Yang fangirl just finished watching Go Go Squid, and get this: (drum roll) she likes GGS’s Han Shangyan MORE than Xiao Nai in Love O2O! FWIW, she said that HSY was a deeper character who grew emotionally through various set-backs in the series, whereas Xiao Nai was the perfect ‘master’ from beginning to end, who experienced no real hardships and so had no personal journey as a character. She also thinks the actor who plays HSY is as handsome as Yang Yang (sorry, Mom, I beg to differ….)

@packmule3 would it be possible to leave Open Threads available for comments on the series you’ve watched and reviewed in the past? Some of us are just discovering these wonderful dramas, and it would be great to share comments on them, even though for you and the regulars here, these series are ‘done and dusted’. I feel bad about posting comments off-topic – like I’ve done here on GGS and BWGM where the post is on The Heiress.

  48. @Rebecca-You are welcome. I hope the website wil work better for you. Yes, Before We Get Married was definitely one of the best dramas for me too. Totally agree with you about the music and the love scenes-absolutely top notch. Especially the love scenes-it’s very rare to see that type of passionate scene in Asian dramas, and certainly rare to see it so well executed. Huge kudos to the director & actors. I like Asian dramas but one of the weaknesses for me is the kiss scenes/love scenes are often, well, awkward/strange/just don’t look right/sometimes disturbing. I’m not alone. You will see a lot of discussion by International fans about the issue. I’m glad you enjoyed BWGM and the discussion here at BODS. @Phoenix also had a lot of great points about that drama.

Your mother has good taste. I like the actor Li Xian too, and find him quite handsome.

  49. Next one I’m getting into is:

    Oh! My Sweet Liar.

You might want to have a look with a view to starting an open thread.

    It is basically comedy.

  50. Sigh. I just finished this and I just felt so sorry for him. 😭 I’m not good with the politics but everything was corrected after 2 years and still no empress for him because he’s still waiting for her but I think she really couldn’t forgive herself with what happened to her clan.

He did everything for her but yeah it’s not meant to be. Maybe I’m biased towards him but I can feel his loneliness being the Emperor and without someone by his side. 😭

I felt like chucking my iPad when it finished. 👿 I hate not having my happily ever after. 😭😭😭

  51. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Thanks for the lowdown @agdr03. I couldn’t bring myself to continue watching, because I really wanted them to end up together. It’s too much emotional investment for zero returns. 🙁

  52. Awww. Thanks for taking one for the team, @agdr03.

You mean he became an emperor and he has no heirs? 😖 Grrr. Maybe there’ll be a sequel someday.

I was so looking forward to binge-watching this Cdrama because I found the actor appealing to the eye.

  53. No worries @GB and Queen. I felt so sad because they were connected in so many ways and they would have made a great Emperor and Empress together. 😩

Yeah, he became the emperor and she was made crown Princess already but she still left. 😭 It was very sad.

I agree about this actor, actually both leads were good together for me. I can imagine a different ending where they have 4 kids 😭😭😭 Why not drama? ☹️

  54. Four kids and a reign without any invasions or military coups. I don’t think I could rest easy being an empress. I’d always worry about a political or military takeover.

BTW, Pride and Prejudice is on Netflix. Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden

  55. I think if ever there’s a political or army takeover they’d be able to think of ways to overcome it together because they think positively together like when they had the calamity for one of the big regions. Sigh 😔

Anyway yes! I saw that P&P was in Netflix 😍I should watch it and then talk with my 5 year old niece so I can practice my British accent 😂

  56. Now getting into “Oh! My Sweet Liar”. Has a large number of viewings on YouTube.

She’s a scandalsheet writer. Reminds me a lot of Goldie Hawn from Housesitter. She tells lies, he’s learning from her. He makes up a lie, she improves on it.

Not particularly serious a series, just good fun. You might want to have a quick look with a view to an open thread.

Still following “Maiden Holmes”. The detective parts are excellent and can’t see it having an unhappy ending.

  57. I watched the ending and dislike open endings so much. For those who did, can someone tell me what were the commoners saying about the king regarding the empress? I watched it with English sub, and per the subs “the empress died and king refuses to refill the position” but why government announced empress died? Instead of it’s vacant and waiting for the empress to come back? If the Han lady-Crowned Princess died, if the now King wants to marry her, she has no title anymore. My mind is trying to create the happy ending but can’t do it if “she died” , because she will definitely won’t married him under another last name

  58. A lot of people misinterpreted the ending because of the carriage (the director was trying to make it an artistic happy ending instead of an obvious one)…I know, sigh …sometimes it’s better to keep it simple. I totally agree that it’s an unsatisfying ending. The screenwriter originally had it where they clearly saw each other. The director later clarified on Weibo to check out her expression (she smiled because she saw him looking for her). It’s implied that they’ll be together. The big hint in the last episode was that ppl could get married either within 7 days under orders or have to wait 3 yrs after mourning an elder’s death. I think Han Shi Yi had to mentally/emotionally sort things out and wanted to properly mourn her father and the Han army first (fulfilling her filial piety). She could’ve never came back or came back earlier/later…but no, she chose to come back 3 yrs later. Also, the original author of the novel wrote an extra piece about after 3 yrs of separation she became the Empress. They’re very happily married and fate brings everything into a full circle and has a special surprise for them 😉! Just remember that these characters are fiction, not factual, so the common palace bs doesn’t apply here. I only mention that because I think there’s a Chinese law that says if you use real ppl that existed in history you can’t change recorded history…that’s why there are so many tragic palace dramas. It doesn’t apply to fictional characters though. You can find the novel on qimao…there’s an additional chapter after the last numbered chapter. There’s a part that mentions Wang Zhong Yu as well, but it doesn’t line up w/ the drama, so I won’t confuse ppl w/ it.

@Happy I think they said she was dead because he wanted to give her the Empress title, but he didn’t think she’d ever come back, so they had to say she was dead because how do you explain that no one ever sees/hears from her. With her coming back, I don’t think it’s a big deal because he’s the Emperor so he can do whatever he wants (both of them are clever, I’m sure they can figure something out).

Thanks for that information about the original novel epilogue. That ending is way better than the open ending in the drama. Why couldn’t they have just followed the novel? Oh well.

@HEHarry- I checked out Oh! My Sweet Liar! from the preview clips and it looks pretty cute, and it has fake/contract marriage which is one of my fave tropes. It looks like there are multiple couples. I like it when a drama has several lovelines. I tried watching the first episode on YT but the subtitles got too confusing for me so I think I will wait and try watching again on Viki (Edited Subs) They have only EDITED for Ep. 1 on Viki (sigh), so I will try again in 2021. Oh well, good things come to those who wait, right?

Right now so many cute rom-coms from China. While waiting for new eps of my fave Dating In The Kitchen, I’m watching both Love Is Sweet at IQIYI and Love In Time which is at Huashi Idol & Romance YouTube and Amazon Prime. Love In Time is so funny! It’s contract marriage trope which is one of my faves.

  60. Thank you!!
That sounds a lot better. Wish they follow the novel for a clear ending.

  61. Thank you for explain it thoroughly :-). It does make a lot more sense to mourn for 3 years in this situation before she can fully be with him. Glad it was a happy ending!

  62. Watched the ending of Maiden Holmes, which does have a happy ending. There are 32 episodes, but think the story could have been told in 24. The detective parts are excellent. Of course the baddie gets what he deserves.

Oh! My Sweet Liar is perhaps a moral lesson on when you lie to people. Others then make up lies about you (e.g. that she has 8 lovers) and when you tell the truth, nobody believes you (e.g. when the leading lady tells her mother she has married a prince, which seems rediculous to the family).

Watched a few of “Lengend of Two Sisters in then Chaos”, which started well but in my opinion has faded out quite quickly. Thought it was funny when one of the male leads kidnaps the wrong sister. You can tell that he’s a nice guy and she doesn’t seem to mind too much. Too many contrived co-incidences for my liking.

  63. @Happy and @Table122000 The novel ending is kind of weird too. The novel originally ended when she first left. The drama showed her coming back 3 yrs later. The Chinese air date of the last episode was 8/27. Qimao’s last revision date of the novel was 8/31…so I’m not sure if the original author wrote the extra chapter (which added the extra “after 3yrs of separation” part) before it got turned into a drama or after. In any case, if you combine the drama ending with the commentary from the production crew and the extra chapter in the novel, it’s a happy ending for the couple.

Btw, not sure if you noticed but there have been a lot of C-drama and K-drama endings with vague or open endings recently. There’s a theory that Asian dramas are being more commercialized so they’ve been doing this to leave the door open to a sequel/Season 2…but this leaves the audience hanging because there are A LOT of barriers to Season 2s (a good enough script, money, main leads’s contract negotiations/schedule, etc). Sheesh, I hope production companies can stop doing this and realize that they CAN have an ending with closure and also room for a sequel if everything lines up (because if things don’t line up, ppl are left with WTH?). Look at the success of The Eternal Love 1 and 2 (3 is on the way)…there was enough closure to make viewers happy and people still came back to watch the sequels.

In any case, happy drama watching to everyone!

    Hi @HEHarry @Happy @DramaFan @Table122000
Thanks for your views on open endings, the likely ending of this show and news on other shows. I’ve decided to not watch the end of this show, although I do so like this couple.

I’m also waiting for more subbed episodes of Dating ITK and I may try Love is Sweet, (as my husband seems to be enjoying it), to tide me over. @Table122000, what do you think of Love is Sweet?

I like contract marriage tropes too. All that ‘forced’ cohabitation and the hijinks that ensue, with the reluctant falling in love. LOL.

  65. @GB
I’m watching Love Is Sweet for my girl Bai Lu as I’m not a fan of the male lead (he’s OK). I’ve only seen Eps. 1-2 an so far i am liking it. Not as good as Dating In The Kitchen, but it’s a light breezy watch and my Principessa Bai Lu is back on my screen. The quality of the subtitles is just okay, sometimes it is confusing for me with the clunky translations, but I power through. At least it’s not Auto translate which IQIYI sometimes uses. It’s slated for 36 episodes which is way too long so it suffers from drama bloat, I can feel it already. Really should have been a 16 ep drama.I forsee using the FF button later. When will the C dramas learn that less is more? Anyway, although I’m making some complaints, I am enjoying this drama and I encourage you to give it a try. If nothing else you can relax and enjoy the eye candy of the cast members cause everyone is pretty.

Thanks for your review of Love is Sweet @Table122000. I’ll bear what you say in mind. I, too, hate drama bloat. I’ll reserve it for when I’m desperate for something to fill up gaps with. That’s the way I treated the more heaving going (and not really a romance but a work drama), We are All Alone. Took me like, 6 months to complete it I think.

I’m just recovering from completing Stranger 2/Forest of Secrets 2 now. The thoughts and feelings run deep. Now I feel I need to re-watch Stranger 1! 😀

  67. @GrowingBeautifully- You are welcome. Yes, definitely add Love Is Sweet to your watch list and check it out when you have the time. To be honest, there are so many Chinese rom-coms out since September. It’s like they saved everything for the whole year to release in 1 month. I had to make a spreadsheet for myself of all the C Dramas with subs info links so I don’t forget them and I am just watching as I have the time. I figure at least I know I’ll have something to watch during 2021 for sure.
