My Self-Help Book for Dummies: Priceless
Excerpts from the “book,” lol.
Comment #1:
Dosan was stupid for running off “in the middle of the night….leaving the woman of his dreams…alone….drunk….in a park….in the middle of the night!!!!”
Self-helping techniques:
1. Quit the hysterics — and the ellipses. Take a deep breath before writing because oxygen deprivation results in cognitive disruptions.
2. Rewatch the scene again.
3. Notice the number of people eating in the restaurant where Dosan and Dalmi dined, the number of people Dosan met on the way to the apartment and back, the busy traffic on the road, the number of SCHOOLKIDS eating ice cream and hanging out with friends, and the street sweeper who reported that Dalmi slept, SOBERED UP, then left.
4. Reach a reasonable conclusion that the evening wasn’t late. Remember that it gets darker EARLIER from autumn till the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere of the world.
5. Read about crime statistics on Seoul. (And I bet you that’s the numbers are lower than in your country.)
6. Visit Seoul and get over yourself.
Comment #2:
“JP saved his company when the morons thought they were talking to investors and they never said thanks.”
Self-helping techniques:
1. Rewatch the episode and try to understand it, not from your delusions, but from JP’s perspective.
2. Let this sink in your brains: the success of the company had NOTHING to do with JP, and JP KNEW it. He was watching the victory from the conference room, and he looked stunned. And the words flashed in his head.
3. Note that the common denominator of all the things he told the Samsan Tech was the TOXICITY. He only remembered how toxic he was as a mentor. He attacked, disparaged, belittled and denigrated them. Not once did he say anything to encourage them.
He remembered saying, “But what’s the use? You have nothing to entice investors.”
And this: “What is your business model? And how will you generate consistent profit? You don’t have a clear picture.
And this: “Are you naive or stupid? Were you going to give away the whole algorithm?”
And this, “I can guarantee that you guys will fail.”
And this, “After seeing this shareholders’ list, no on will be stupid enough to invest in your company. No one.”
And this to Dalmi, “And the biggest problem here is that the CEO can’t resolve the situation.”
And this to Dalmi again, “The more users, the higher the cost. Who’d invest in this?”
All of his words came flooding back and he sat there speechless.
3. Understand JP’s facial expressions as he sat there looking stunned. Is it because this actor failed at emoting? Perhaps he wasn’t good at outwardly expressing his character’s feelings? Perhaps he was only good at flashing those dimples of his??
Why is it that his fangirls can’t understand the MORTIFICATION he felt that he’d been wrong in his judgment of the team?
4. Don’t use the tired excuse that he was “nitpicking” for the team’s own good.
How about if JP fangirls were nitpicked in the same manner that JP “nitpicked” Dosan and his teammates? If JP were to scrutinize the antics of his fandom, he would berate his fans for being stupid, like this:
“But what’s the use? You have nothing to entice intelligent viewers.” “What’s your logic? And how will you generate an insightful perspective on the drama? You don’t have a clear idea of the development of the story and the themes of the show.” “Are you naive or stupid? Were you going to fall for JP’s stupid smile all the time?” “I can guarantee that you fangirls will fail because you post nothing but drivel.” “After reading your posts, no one will be stupid enough to believe in your arguments. No one.” “And the biggest problem here is that most raucous members of your fanclub don’t get the drama.” “The more delusional the fangirls are, the more embarrassing it is for the actor. Are you his closet antifans??”
How did you like that?
lol.
Just like the success of SamSan Tech had nothing to do with JP, the success and downfall of JP fangirls have nothing to do with Dosan or the writer. It’s all on the fangirls themselves. They created their own alternate reality with their totally off-based interpretation of the script.
5. Bottom line: JP felt guilty about his behavior. The fangirls are doing the actor a disservice by not acknowledging what he was actually trying to emote onscreen and accomplish in that scene.
Comment #3:
But Dosan was a bully!
Self-helping techniques:
1. Get a clue.
2. Expand your vocabulary.
3. Ditch the second-male lead syndrome.
4. Don’t read this blog when you hate Dosan so much. Why are you into self-flagellation?
5. Focus more on your high school studies so you can graduate with honors.

Omg new start-up content! You don’t know how happy I am for this post lol
How did you know? Can I hug you, wait social distancing, here’s my 2 meter away hugs..
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Note: about a few days ago I just realized you have a share button 🤦🏻♀️
If only I could upvote/like/heart/retweet this post a thousand times.😂
Do you still receive a lot of hate comments from the JP stans? Oh my.
I have noticed that the Dosan hate has died down from my side of the internet, but I still see a sprinkle of hate for SU, Dosan and Dalmi on some sites online.
I have yet to move on from SU, but if they won’t move on then I won’t either.👀
Anyway, Dosan being a bully is the most mind-boggling thing I have heard from them. How on earth is Dosan a bully? *shakes hesd violently*
The GIFs are lovely as usual. I miss DoDal. *sniffs*
I have a share button? Where?!! What does that do? 😂
This is heartily amusing and might be more likely to get me to watch this series than anything else so far. LOL.
I’m an embarrassment of my field. All this time I share your post with my RL friends by copying your url lol..
Then a few days ago I saw the twitter and facebook icon underneath each post 😆 *BINGO*
@packmule 3-You’re a genius. This was such a hilarious post that actually was helpful to these fangirls. And as you so carefully pointed out, how the fangirling actually was a disservice to the actor because they were either unwilling or unable to see what he was doing. And, if truth be told, the Jyp character was set up by the writers in doing the letter back story first by showing us young Jyp and grandma. The younger actor who played Jyp did a fantastic jib in engendering sympathy for the character makingnour fangirl favorite actor’s job much easier, even if, to my mind he did a good job.
A new Start Up post!!! Yippee, happy Monday indeed. Love the “nitpicking” of the JP fangirls. Can’t stop laughing.
Pm3 are you lurking on twitter?? Hahahahaha another day another bitter post from these jidalers who can’t seem to move on. Loool. Will they ever be enlightened?
As always, Thank you for your post it brightened up my day. Hahaha
No, @ foreverinreverie, I have no time to lurk on Twitter much less to read their silly twittering and yapping.
However, they did come here to my blog and tried to post their bovine excrement. 🤦♀️
I’ll never understand these fangirls. This is a personal blog. I make no bones about my house rules. I give certain groups safe space here. Why do they insist on lurking and gatecrashing?
@foreverinreverie
Yup the timing was just mindblowing. Yesterday was another cycle of DoSan bashing, fangirl got called out, fangirl playing victim.
So when I saw @packmule3 post it gave me the biggest laugh.
Not surprising on their attempt to gatecrash, they literally try to overrun all kdrama sites and forum out there with their hysteria.
I sound like a broken record but can’t stressed out enough how grateful I am for this safe-haven.
“ I’ll never understand these fangirls. This is a personal blog. I make no bones about my house rules. I give certain groups safe space here. Why do they insist on lurking and gatecrashing?”
Because that’s what fuels them? The are looking for a fight. Their existence depends on there being an opposing view to downplay. There’s only so much gushing they can do on their own. For some bizarre reason they can’t gush with any satisfaction knowing that someone else is gushing over another opposing couple. They are zealots whose one purpose is to quash all other views because theirs is the only one which should exist.
I read about shipping – something to do with fan girls – what does it mean?
Jo3edc
Ps using this site to justify my kdrama addiction 🙂
Fans seem very proactive – with presidents, membership clubs etc – a new thing that I never realised
@jo3edc
Welcome to the the world of kdrama 🥳
shipping is derived from relation’ship’ it’s when fans want either two character in a drama or two actors to end up together. They normally come up with a ship name as well.
For example in StartUp: DoDal (DoSan&DalMi) is the ship name.
Fangirl is a female fan but the obsessive kind.
Hope that helps!
@Ella Thank You. On the strength of my kdrama addiction a friend has lent me the book by Simon Winchester Korea – a walk through the land of miracles.
Written in 1987 – just prior to the Olympics, which off course is when Reply 1988 is set.
Hey @Packmule3
There is a greek phrase: “πως τους πετσόκοψες έτσι;” *smiles innocently…*
The essence of the translation is what @Old American Lady said above!
I am currently watching Start-Up and enjoying this k-drama very much.
Also, I am with you gals!
@Cleopatra
I’m thinking of starting to watch Start Up, although I will have to give the currently airing shows more priority. We can sort of watch it together. What episodes are you going into? Are you binge watching?
Hey, my lovely @GB!
We are currently on Episode 8. I was thinking, so as not to binge watch it. Do you want to start over together? I don’t mind watching it for a second time!
Just tell me what day you can start watching it and I will watch Episode 1 with you!
Let’s have a watch paaartyyy agaaaaiiinn
☺☺☺
Lol for comment#2.
There’s one more. The said Dosan is an unfilial son that left her mother out of nowhere to save a girl.
Heh! @Cleopatra and @Ella LOL … I don’t mind ‘live watching’ with you if you like, it’s just a matter of timing. If the time doesn’t work, I’ll just watch and comment on the existing threads and look out for your comments.
I’m having a bit of difficulty getting Episode 1, however I should be able to get access to it from tomorrow (Wednesday) onwards. I know @Cleopatra is probably 6 hours behind me… and I’ll have time to watch around 11pm, my time. That should be 15:00:00 hours UTC??
Is that doable? Will Saturday 16 Jan 2021 be OK at 15:00:00 UTC?
Shall we just comment on the “Start-Up Eps 1 to 4 First Impressions” thread?
Count me in ✌🏻 it’s a date.
@GB,
On Saturday I will be able to live watch it at 15:00. We are indeed 6 hours behind your time!
Yes, I will comment on the “Start-Ups Epis 1-4 First Impresssions” thread.
If something changes by @packmule3, regarding a new thread, I will follow the lead!
*excited*
What a hilarious and great post! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
That first gif says it all. 😍 Are you sure they know the meaning of bovine excrement? 🤔
@GB, @Cleopatra and @Ella, I’ll try to join you on Saturday. What episode are you going to watch? I’m scheduled to stay at my sister’s house so I’ll see.
Hey @agdr03!
I hope you are feeling better! We missed you the last days !
We are going to watch Start-Up’s Episode 1 with @GB!
We would be thrilled if you can make it!
@Cleopatra 👋🏻 I am much better, thank you. I’ll try to join you on episode 1 this coming Saturday at 3pm. 😊
Yeah @agdr03!
I am glad you are feeling better! *happy dance*
😂 Since you’re the president, @ Ella, just tell me the date and time, and the Episode you’ve decided to watch and I’ll open a thread for you all.
Just remember: Episode 1 is prologue. But if you want to pick up hints or review JP’s character, go for it.
Sorry Queen. Can you delete my second post please. I thought I haven’t posted it. 😬 thank you!
Done. 🙂
Thank you! ☺️
Have a good morning / afternoon / evening everyone! 👋🏻
My pleasure, @ agdr03.
I’ll see you later. Just take it easy. No relapse.
I’m so behind with my posts. 😂
@GB haven’t started at all, am I right?
@Cleopatra at Ep8
what about you @agdr3?
I’m open really. We can start with Ep1 if @GB haven’t watch at all.
🙂 Not a genius, @ Old American Lady. Just crabby.
I was minding my own business, and preparing the next post on Mr Queen and True Beauty, when I get hit with this rant about Dosan. 😈
JYP was written “first.” I said that we were given his history and knowing his history made viewers empathize with him. Also, the young actor was handsome. 😂
So Dosan started with a “deficit” because he just “plopped” in the ending.
However this writer did exactly the same thing in Dream High with Taecyeon. The writer built up Taecyeon to be Suzy’s rescuer in the beginning episodes. A newbie actor portrayed the real love interest and he showed up later. This newbie actor turned out to be Kim SooHyun.
So knowing the background of this writer comes in handy.
And the way that youngster spoke to the Grandma raised a 🚩 red flag. Halmeoni knew that he was a “wounded animal” but that was a character flaw that had to go undergo major fix for him to become a decent human being.
@Ella,
Yes I am on Episode 8, but I would like to keep company to @GB, since she hasn’t watched it yet! It would be fun if we watch it all and discuss!
@Cleopatra let’s do Ep1 ✌🏻
@Packmule3 should we use the open thread for ep1-4 or would you like to open a new thread?
It’s for Saturday, 16 Jan
7pm Singapore time 15:00 UTC
@packmule3 the ranting never stop, yesterday was how problematic dosan is, today was how crappy dalmi is 🥱 it ended with a cuss made by a fangirl to all dodal-ers and their mom 🤦🏻♀️
Hey there Start-Up Friends!!! @pkml3 @Cleopatra @Ella @agdr03 and anyone else who’s doing a re-watch. Thanks so much for offering to accompany me. Thanks @pkml3 for offering to open a thread just for us. 😀
Episode to Group Watch
Although you do not need to start with Episode 1 for me, let’s do that, since I believe @agdr03 has not watched the show yet either.
What I’ll do is try to complete watching a few episodes, maybe up to Episode 4, so that by that time I’ll have a good grasp of the kinds of personalities the characters have and I’ll already like or dislike certain things about them, and have a whole bunch of opinions, LOL.
Then I’ll re-watch Episode 1 with us all on Saturday. I’m bound to notice more stuff that I missed before. 😉
Watching a show while chatting about it, is something I’ve known of but never did before, so this really sounds like fun.
°˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
@Ella
I believe 15:00:00 or 3.00pm UTC is 11pm Singapore Time. I’m referring to this world time web page: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/
Now it’s almost 13:00:00 UTC which will be 9.00pm for me in Singapore. Therefore 15:00:00 UTC will be 11pm.
@GB I was meant to type 11pm 😆 my bad. You’re right it was my typo. I didn’t realize I typed 7pm 🙏🏻
@packmule3 was checking your blog for True Beauty but was pleasantly surprised to see this. Made my day. Hahaha super funny and true!
@Ella @foreverinreverie I saw those tweets my goodness! I don’t know why can’t these people just focus on their own stans. Can’t anti-Dosans (and Dalmi) just leave these two alone?! I was cracking reading the comments and debates. Glad that there are still a lot of Dosan warriors defending our best boy!
I want to join the watch party! Weeee!
I miss Nam Joo Hyuk. I’m feeling the social media content drought it’s been weeks! I hope he posts something on his IG or release new pics soon. I’m impatiently waiting for his Soop “What if NHJ wakes you up” voice only content.
@GB, @Ella, @agdr03 and whoever else will join us, I would really enjoy the ride with you ladies! Let’s have fun this Saturday!
@GB You will totally be hooked with the characters.
I especially enjoy Yoo Su-Bin as Chul-san, he makes me laugh with his facial expressions. Sometimes he is funny, even though what he says is not funny at all… lol
@Diane
Same, I’m waiting for my new wake up alarm 🤭
check out this mv, I clicked because of JooHyuk but the song itself is great and the mv felt like a mini movie 🤣
https://youtu.be/BzJ36wIgw24
and like @nrllee said they can’t accept opposing view and these particular group fueled on each other hate rant. I was waiting for someone in that fandom to have a good sense of calling it off, but alas they all seems to enable each other 🤷🏻♀️
@packmule3
I shared your post on StartUp on twitter could it be why you get that rant yesterday, I have small mutuals but these fangirl haunt StartUp mention 🙏🏻 I’m sorry I hope it didn’t ruin your day ☹
Look what I woke up to… Plans for a Start Up rewatch – can I resist this?!! TBH, I was thinking of rewatching ep1 myself and, viola, here’s the thread. Let me know what time and I’ll try to join. Someone here mentioned that the young JP actor did a great job in ep1 that hooked in a lot of viewers on the JP ship. And he did not even have to show a dimpled smile the . Hence, the road was paved for the older JP. My friend confirms this also and “blames” that young actor!
@ella, thanks for the MV link. I thought this was from Josee scenes but it was posted 2 years ago! This MV is beautiful and emotional.
I also enjoyed your other recommended SOOP links, NJH studying Eddie Redmayne’s acting. I even watched The Great Battle movie which is Viki. And Radiant. What can I say, Start Up started me up to be a NHJ fan.
@Diane, same as you, missing new NJH content. 😂
@packmule3, I love learning about the writers’ methodology from you. This adds to my understanding of the drama that we’re viewing. Unlike American tv that has become increasingly more formulaic and predictable, probably because Ameican tv has multiple seasons and, in reality, doesn’t go in for character development.So the 16 to 20 episode format allows writers to develop character and deepen backstories. Even with all of the K Drama tropes there is room for lots of originality. And even though there are lots of police, law and medical shows-it’s not the casevif the week. I also like that you see a deep dive into various professions and jibs-here we have a derper understanding of tech start ups offering nitty gritty examples (unlike Silicon Valley that was played for laughs). We also learn about running a corn dog stand. I won’t go on and on, but will reiterate my thanks for your informative postsvon writing these dramas. They add to the joy of the experience.
@Ella – are you in Australia? Watching on Netflix?
Jo3edc
@Janey
I only saw it recently because of YT recommendation 🤣 but the song itself is great, permanently added to my spotify playlist lol..
Did you finish Dazzling? After I watched it I joked that they should change the title from The Light in Your Eyes into The Pain in Your Soul, one of the rare ocassion where I cried watching a drama 😭
@Ella I absolutely LOVED Radiant. I watched it with zero expectations whilst it was being screened. It was just a serendipitous find really. But it was one of the best stories told. I cried. I laughed. It had the perfect mix of both. And the message woven through it was beautiful. The twist at the end was nothing short of spectacular. One of those penny drop moments where everything that didn’t make sense before suddenly did. It’s on my highly recommended viewing list.
@Ella @nrllee – I love Radiant and cried buckets as well as laughed at the shenanigans of the characters (both the young and the oldies). I did not have any expectations either and it unfolded into a gem of a story. I was deeply touched with so many life and growing old realizations.
I heard that Start Up director specifically chose NJH as Nam Dosan because of Radiant. He did wear checkered shirts (Samsan check!) but it was a different character and you can see the range in his acting.
Hey Ladies,
I have noticed Nam Joo-Hyuk in The Bride of Habaek / The Bride of the Water God.
I don’t know if you have watched it. I really enjoyed it and Shin Se-Kyung is pretty good at it, as So-A.
I haven’t seen Radiant / The Light in your Eyes, but I will add it to my list.
What I like in him as an actor is the way he uses silence as an acting skill.
I like detecting little things here and there and I think this trait will make
Nam Joo Hyuk a better actor in time.
So, yeah to Habaek and Nam Dosan!
@nrlee @Janey @Cleopatra
I watched The Light in Your Eyes a while back and got surprised by the twist at the end.
Agree it was like a lightbulb switch where everything become clear and make sense because we can see the whole picture and why things happenes the way they were.
The assemble cast was great. The everyday story and struggle of growing old and how yourself and society perceived you is touching. Also how bad decisions can haunt your lives is some of the things I remember from the show.
@packmule3
I just want to drop this for you here the last behind the scenes for StartUp with eng sub was uploaded by the swoon
https://youtu.be/P0qC6fvDoyU
p.s: remember when i told you about Joo-hyuk the hot packs fairy it’s in this one 😉
Hey Ella!
I posted today among others things about The Swoon, on the thread about JB’s Growing Self Awareness!
I cannot watch this video yet, though. I have 4 episodes left and I don’t want any spoilers for the ending!
@Cleopatra
Yes, don’t watch it yet, this bts is from ep14-16 and full of spoiler 🤣
I will check out your post in the other thread 🏃🏻♀️
@Ella,
I won’t.
No spoilers for me! I was sad for the breakup, but it was needed for the characters development.
I am anxious to see today episodes 13-14…!
Yeah! 🙂
Happy Friday everyone!!!
@Ella Your new Alarm!
https://youtu.be/Y6bIRVKYE48
Kalimera from my part of the world!
@Diane seriously?
LOL such a calm and relaxing alarm. It would lull me back to sleep. @Ella Good alarm to set for our Group Watch!
@GB I so agree with you!
I just…want an alarm with the voice of Gong Yoo… *sighs*
Here is a fine and swoon-worthy specimen:
@Diane
Saw that, downloaded and set up as my alarm already hahahaa..
@Cleopatra
This morning alarm is set up by soop management, it houses Gong Yoo as well, I will let you know if they post Gong Yoo’s one
@ Ella,
Do we have time for rewatch already? And episode? Please repost then I’ll open a thread.
Thanks.
@Ella,
Please do! GY is the ahjussi of my heart!
@packmule3
We will rewatch Episode 1
Saturday, 16th Jan
15:00pm UTC
10:00am EST
23:00pm Singapore
02:00am (Sunday) Sydney
Thanks.
It’s amazing how JP stans can justify JP nitpicking DS, but can’t take us nitpicking JP. JP so fragile that he can’t take a bit of “constructive crticism”? LOL.
Also, Ms Yoon shows how proper mentoring works. Compare how receptive YS was to her advice & even going as far as to consult arch-enemy JP straight afterward. JP is mentoring newbie, making as many mistakes in mentoring as the SST boys did in trying to find investors.
I’m so glad I didn’t watch this drama when it came out and had to endure people justifying Ji Pyeong’s cowardice all the time. It’s not cute nor attractive. Plus, as someone who is working in a startup. I must say, he’s a very shitty mentor/investor. Yes, they are tough, they can even insult you but they rarely raise their voices unless you make them lose a lot of money and JP never invested money on Samsan or Dalmi’s company. His yelling and rudeness was very unjustified.
#TwistedHipster, thanks for helping to add to my understanding of the real start up process. And thanks for helping us verify insuch a real way, that Jyp was a horrible mentor.
@twistedhipster – indeed! Totally agree with you on JP as a terrible example of a mentor. Join us for our BoD Saturday rewatch of Start Up! We are on episode 8. 😊
I must admit sometimes reading the posts on other websites I think everyone is watching a different drama. JP was never a love interest in the entire drama from Dalmi perspective. Dalmi never showed any interest in JP from the beginning. She did like the Nam Dosan that wrote the letters (and it ended up being JP whom wrote the letters), but it was always Nam Dosan whom Dalmi liked, from her early perspective (understandng) it was Nam Dosan who wrote the letters. She meets Nam Dosan and is even more attached to him the way he supports her, the support at the Networking party and the support with Morning Group belittling her, and on and on.
Once the real truth about the letters surfaced, Dalmi was hurt that she was lied to and was even saying at the bus station that she did not want Nam Dosan to say “I’m sorry”, but she wanted him to say that it was not true. Did Dalmi ever discuss the letters with JP, the answer no. Shortly after this letter crisis, JP confesses to not only writing the letters but also having feelings for Dalmi. But notice how Dalmi almost immediately and in the rest of the drama reduces her importance about JP’s letters and never sees JP romantically and never even casually talks to JP about goals or future. When Dalmi and JP meet all the conversations are about work or Grandma or Nam Dosan, with a little off subject comments. But never a casual conversation about herself, her feelings, her goals like she does with Nam Dosan. Every time an issue arose and they showed her thinking about helpful suggestions given her, it was always Nam Dosan words on her mind (never showed her thinking about what JP said when dealing with an issue). Dalmi never quotes or mentions the letters again after she found out they were written by JP. So much for the letters importance to her (yes they helped her during a time of loneliness after her Mom and sister left and comfort after Dad died) but after finding out that JP wrote them she realized that even the “letters were fake”….her words).
The three year gap everyone thinks JP messed up an opportunity, but I believe he never had a chance because Dalmi never gave him a second thought. Her mind and heart was always on Nam Dosan and JP knew it. After the time skip the writer tells us this 3 times.
1) At Grandma’s house as JP is putting the vegetables together, JP admits that Dalmi is uncomfortable around him. Why else would she be uncomfortable except that she knows he likes her but she does not feel the same way. Dalmi even tells why she invited JP, because he was there Grandma stayed up later, that is the reason for her invite, for Grandma.
2) With Dalmi’s discussion with JP after the ransomware attack. She cried over seeing Nam Dosan again but felt humiliated by the circumstances and her appearance at the time. She cried for Nam Dosan, not JP three years later.
3) Again after Nam Dosan told Dalmi “I don’t want to see you again”. She discusses with JP in the car in the parking lot. JP admits he cannot advise her for personal reasons, her response is “Yes I know, that is why I did not want to tell you”. She knows JP has feelings for her. So when she tells JP about the issue she only explains it in business terms, that Nam Dosan rejected her proposal to be recruited, completely leaving out the fact that Nam Dosan rejected her for personal reasons. She tried to hide this from JP because she only thinks of him as a business associate. If she was close to JP she would not have hidden the personal part of her struggles.
JP was never a romantic interest except in his own mind (he liked Dalmi). Nam Dosan perceived a relationship between JP and Dalmi existed only due to the lies told him from JP and the false statements Dalmi made during the breakup, which she later confessed to be lies to Injae when Injae asks Dalmi to recruit the Samsan Tech developers.
This whole story on the romance side is about two people destined to love each other (the flower petal in episode 1) whom would not have met had Grandma and JP not used Nam Dosan name on the letters. That was the whole purpose of the letters was to create the circumstances for the two strangers destined for love to meet. Once they met it was love at first site for both. What would a drama be if not for intrigue and such, thus the letters, the lies, the misunderstandings…as our destined couple go through life’s struggles until they eventually become a strong loving couple ready to follow their dreams and change the world for the better. I really liked the story and believe this to be one of the best dramas I have ever seen. A love that can overcome so much, the growth in character of two people learning about life, so well written and acted. The writer did not keep a love triangle going for 15 episodes, she kept a “true love” story going for the entire drama. A “true love” that overcame lies, misunderstanings, seperation and JP manipuation. The “true love” story is in the details, which some people miss or do not want to see.
@Janey I’m not sure how this website works yet but I found it after googling for a different opinion. How does the rewatching thing works? lmao
I’m going to leave a comment I left on a youtube channel trying to make a point as to why Han Ji Pyeong was not a good tech investor but I think said comment will be ignore by the masses.
“Let me just add one more thing about Episode 11. Demo day proved that Ji Pyeong is nothing more of an opportunist venture capitalist with no real vision. Alex knew from the beginning the value of Dosan’s skills. In design and in development we know that limitations if often times not a detriment but the contrary. Limitations such as low consumption and lower memory devices and how Samsan tech had decrease the processing on the AI’s recognition system to overcome this hurdle made it so the system can even run in raspberry pies (The little boxes they use to run their AI algorithms). The other team was knew their app was not going to run properly because they were relying on servers with big storage and memory capacity. Samsan’s team were trying to work with phones and specifically phone’s battery capacity. Dosan knew this. He was not sure during the test because he suffers from impostor syndrome. That is why he doesn’t seem assertive. Ji Pyeong has no clue what the tech really does or how optimized the code has to be, therefore he doesn’t really know the worth of such algorithm. So no, Ji Pyeong in this case was wrong the whole time.”
For the record. Alex is not really a “bad person”. He was honest with Dosan from the beginning. He was interested in him only and he was not a charity. He was dubious but he is a business man after all. His tactics are typical. If you want to watch a show that deals with the way Silicon Valley operates I recommend Halt and Catch Fire. I loved Start Up. It not 100% accurate but they do low key show a lot of issues with the tech industry and illustrate a real future problem that AI tech is creating. It wasn’t very serious because they focused on the love story more but it was still there.
🙂 🙂 🙂
I was about to miss this article.
It’s funny! Made me laugh.

@twistedHipster- ICYMI, pm3 has added a recent post on Start Up Ep8 rewatch with some explanation on how we do the rewatch.
@Djbrawl – join us for the rewatch, too! Like you, I did not see a love triangle either. Only Dosan thinks that because of the lies fed mostly by JP.
Cheers!
@packmule3, Correct me if I’m wrong,wasn’t Grandma really Dosan in the letters. Didn’t she provide the content and the insight into Dalmi. For some reason I thought she may have dictated the content to Jyp. And wasn’t yhe news account of Dosan’s math medal that gave the “writer”his name. So to my mind, it was Grandma who kept Dalmi’s spirit up throughout her childhood and teens with Mom and Sis being absent and a tad toxic, by creating the “writer” and the contents of the letters to Dalmi. Jyp’s role was to do the actual writing andbprobide pretty words (Cyrano connection).
