May we all be bullish this year and meet our challenges head on.

(lol. I’m still working on my animal doodles. And maybe waving a red umbrella and drawing red hearts on the dress aren’t such a good idea when confronting a bull. Oh well. I’ll do better with the tiger next year.)

I’m hoping we’ll have another bumper year of great kdramas and Asian dramas to watch. We had a feast last year to get us through the chaos and upheavals.

Thank you for spending time with me and the old regulars here at BitchesOverdramas. Let’s have more fun moments together.

Edited to add @Snow Flower’s latest composition for Lady Maximus, in case you missed it on our The King: Eternal Monarch” thread. Thanks, @Snow Flower. She wrote:

Since Maximus is a lady, the piece uses the tempo and the rhythm of the minuet, a court dance from France, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The right hand plays the fanfare, while the left hand prances with dignity.

    Hi Everyone,

    A. YES

Happy Lunar New Year for everyone who celebrate, this is my first virtual lunar new year doing family greeting through video call. We don’t have big family dinner as well this year.

  5. Happy Lunar New Year to everyone on BoD! May you all have a wonderful celebration and a fabulous new year ahead🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

  6. Happy and prosperous lunar new year to BoD!!! Cheers!!!

The only tradition on CNY that we do at home is to give red envelopes 🧧 with money to the kids! Of course, they love that. And we dress in red for good luck.

  7. How much do you put in those envelopes?

We went to a Chinese restaurant last year (brave soul! There was COVID going on) and the dancing dragon appeared. I was given a red envelope to put in the mouth of the dragon. I didn’t know that we had to put money till the last minute so I had to scramble for dollar bills. Lol.

Dragon also stepped on my foot. It’s there some superstition related to clumsy dragon dancers stepping on the shoe of a guest? 😂

  8. When they were younger, $1 which is at par with the tooth fairy. I’m a cheapskate mom! 😂 Focus on the gesture, not the amount. Now I put $20. They still feel excited about it.

  9. I also saw this:

12022021 – CNY date when read backwards is the same! It is a palindrome date which is an auspicious date. A strong way to herald a good year!

  10. oooh. You’re right; I was waiting for December.

I love numeric palindromes dates. Last year, we had 02/02/2020.

But we’ll have another chance in December 2 because it’ll be 12/02/2021 or 12022021 again.

@pkml3 Thanks for this thread and a Happy and Healthy New Year, plus a good start to the Spring and a Sweet Valentine’s Day to all!!

Over here if there are lion dancers asked to dance for a home or a business to bring good fortune, the host will give a big enough red packet to defray the cost of the whole shebang (there’s the transportation, the musicians and the dancers).

I don’t know that dragon dancers perform just anywhere. That requires a whole large team of people. Usually it’s arranged by a community or club for their members or for the public. The public, as in patrons of the restaurant are not normally expected to give red packets, but I guess that’s the way over at your place.

As for our kids, we don’t want to over-indulge them, so the amounts are enough for kids (a couple of dollars) and the sum increases as they grow up. Young adults may get $10-$20 or one’s own kids may get more. Some of us also give to our parents, grandparents, etc.

@Janey, I received the same message on the palindrome date. It works for us since we write our dates ddmmyyyy.

  12. Happy Chinese New Year ladies & gens (^_^)

    Stay healthy, sassy, and happy!

  13. Sorry I’m late but Happy Chinese New Year! May 2021 be a year of good fortunes and especially good health! 🎉🎉🎉

I like the doodle Queen! I remember that red envelope with the dragon. 😁

  14. @Snow Flower , thank you for that composition for our Lady Maximus! 👏🏻 I miss her! ☺️

My youngest son can play a few pieces on the piano and it’s always nice hearing it. But he doesn’t want to have lessons. It’s a pity because he’s got nice long fingers.

  15. I’m ordering Chinese food for dinner so you’re not late yet. I wonder how you say “Bon appetite” or “Jak meokge sseumnida” in Chinese.

    It’s Lincoln’s birthday today, too.

Tomorrow is rewatch. Sunday is Valentine’s Day.

River Where the Moon Rises starts on Monday. Sisyphus on Wednesday.

It’s also Ash Wednesday. Have you thought of what to give up for Lent? 🙂

So lots of things going on.

  16. What about violin?

    Or guitar?

Guys who can play a guitar are always cool to hang out with. Their friends can have an instant sing-along. Especially your son who can play by ear. I know nowadays with iPhones, they can sing whenever and wherever. But knowing how to play an instrument or two always adds to the chill factor.

  17. Enjoy your Chinese dinner! My parents and I had Chinese for lunch too yesterday, it’s a mix of yumcha and main dishes. As usual Dad and I ate more than enough. 😁

Google says ‘yongcan yukuai’ is bon appetite. Someone please correct me. 😃

    Happy Birthday Abraham Lincoln! 🙌🏻

I’m thinking wether to cook or just eat out tomorrow with my three boys for Valentine’s Day. 🤔

I’m looking forward to watching the new dramas.

I’ll try to watch Start Up with you ladies tonight since it’s the kiss episode. 🥰 my Sunday morning is free because we’re going to mass tonight.

Yes, it’s been on my mind what to give up for Lent but I can’t decide yet. 🤔

  18. We’ve been ordering delivery or taking food to go. I like how I don’t even have to get out of the car to pick up food. I just pop the trunk of the car open and a waiter puts the food in. I bought a hamper (like a laundry basket) where they can plop the food containers so they’re not sliding around in the trunk.

The only thing is some food odors stick around more than others. 😂 So I have to air out the trunk or neutralize the smell with febreeze afterwards.

You’re watching Start-Up with us? Are you sure? Won’t it be midnight your time? Lol. Hope your husband doesn’t wonder where you are in the middle of the night. 😂😂

We’ve been hearing mass on Saturdays too bec snow was forecasted on Sundays the past couple of weeks. My hubby panics over two to three inches of snow. 🤪

  19. Gung Hay Fat Choy! (Romanization of the Cantonese version of the Chinese New Year greeting)

@Packmule, I suspect those were lion dancers rather than a dragon that visited you in the restaurant. I can’t speak for worldwide practices, but in the Chinese communities of Southern California, the dragon–which takes many people to operate–is only brought out for special years. And even if the dragon makes an appearance in a parade, it is only the lion dancers that collect the hong bao (red packets) on behalf of charities. What is funny is when someone feeds a lion an orange and the peels come flying back out of the mouth.

My hubby and I will cook Chinese for dinner tonight. That’ll be as much celebrating as we can manage, tucked into our mountain cabin.

We had snow this morning, but just a light dusting. I’m glad the streets didn’t need plowing, because I only yesterday finished clearing the rest of the berm blocking my parking deck, allowing a second car to be parked. It had been ten days since our last significant snowfall, but the snowplow berm–an accumulation from three storms–refused to melt.

  20. Thank you, @packmule3. Happy Lunar New Year to you and all of the BoDs, too.

  21. I asked him about playing guitar and he said I don’t have a guitar Mom. 😆

I agree though that anyone who can play a guitar is cool and I’m a sucker for singing anytime. 😂

  22. I love febreeze. ☺️ Awesome idea about the hamper for food take out! 👍🏻

Yes, it’ll be midnight my time. I’ll be watching in the family room for the rewatch instead of the bedroom so I won’t disturb his sleep. He knows the drill. 😉

I’m with your hubby when it comes to snow. 😁 You know me, I’m not into too much cold. We usually do Saturday mass but these days boys want to go on a Sunday so starting next week we will go every Sunday except when I’m reading.

  23. on red envelopes / hong bao, in my big family the aunties are in cahoots beforehand to make sure they put the same amount so there is no competition lol

  24. That’s great @Ella, it’s fair enough.

My Grandmother uses the red envelopes during Christmas and one time my son opened it together with my niece and she got $100 while he got $50. 😂 Lucky he just mentioned it and didn’t make a fuss.

  25. Hello packmule and everyone.

Happy Chinese New Year. Gung hay fat choy 2021. May the year bring lots of blessing to you and your families, health, and happiness for the year. Hope we can all get our vaccines and be able to live a normal life this year.

We don’t have a good chinese restaurant anymore after the new ownership took over – since we are vegetarians, we will have to find one that suits us. Anyway, I enjoyed the Chinese New Year with “Ragda Patti”, an Indian Street food that I made at home. Lots of work, but very appetizing. Spicy, sweet and sour was the taste. Hope our lives are more sweet and spicy and less sour this year.

    🎊🎈🎈🎁🎁🎁🎊🎊. Happy Chinese New Year !! 🎊🎊🎉 🧧 ❤️❤️❤️❤️🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Sorry I am late wishing everyone.

  26. Happy New Year! 🎊

  27. @agdr03

Because a few years back the little munchkin did a round of “how much did you get from aunty x and aunty y” lol.. so after that incident everyone decided to gave the same amount 🤣

  28. @Ella, better to be fair than unfair 😄

I’ll see you later at the Start Up rewatch. ☺️

  29. Ready for the Start Up rewatch, @agdr03? I hope you took a nap earlier. 🙂

I think life is generally unfair, agdr03. That’s why we look to the heavens or the afterlife for eternal “fairness,” goodness, and happiness. On earth, we can only hope to hold onto these things for brief moments in time. Sometimes but not always.

But that said, I don’t think any child will resent the adults around him for trying to give him the “illusion” of fairness, goodness, and happiness. I’ve never come across an adult who decried his parents for preserving that innocence of childhood, or an adult who was bitter that his childhood was idyllic. Quite the opposite. A dysfunctional adult would always point to a childhood trauma for his problems.

Frankly, I look askance at people who say that we shouldn’t teach our children about Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, God and the saints, and the goddess of fairness in charge of those red envelopes, because these aren’t real or because they impose unrealistic expectation from life, or because these indoctrinate them into … ?? … (whatever’s the current enemy of the masses). These people don’t get that children are born with a moral compass. And just like a regular compass is always pointing True North, their moral compass is always seeking for what’s fair, good, right and brings them true happiness. To me, children should be taught that dragons await them but they have nothing to fear because they have brains, heart, and courage in them, and a guardian angel on their side.

We as parents can only protect our children as long as possible from the harsh realities of life. But when the time comes, we hopefully have equipped them with the necessary tools and virtues to face this “unfair” world on their own. 🙂

    See you in an hour.

  30. Wishing packmule and everyone a very safe and prosperous Chinese New Year, may we all be resilient and stay strong like the Ox! May 2021 be a better year for all 🙂

I’m new here but looking forward to participate in some of the threads.
