How do we rewatch an episode?
Each one has his/her own style.
I rewatch with my laptop, phone and my iPad.
Shortly before 8am EST, I boot up Start Up on Netflix on my iPad and log onto the blog on my laptop. @Ella, @GrowingBeautifully, and @Cleopatra are usually ready to go. At 13pm UTC, we all start watching the drama together and keep a running commentary. Whenever something strikes our attention, we simply pause the scene and post our view about it. We also read and reply to other people’s comments as we go along.
It’s chatting online while watching the show together.
If you wish, you may also prepare notes beforehand. I usually have dialogues written down and I simply post them whenever we reach that scene during the rewatch.
Go ahead and look at our previous rewatches if you haven’t done so. It’ll give you an idea how fast-paced the commentaries are.
The rewatch usually last an hour and 30 minutes but it’s not a hard stop. You may continue posting if you want.
That’s it. It’s supposed to be fun so just do whatever works for you. 🙂

How do we rewatch? For me, wake up super duper early, get coffee, put headset on, turn up TV. Then watch, type, refresh website, repeat. The 90 mins will fly so fast, you won’t even notice until the epilogue rolls in. 😉

No, we’re not going to end up in lockstep with each other. I’m one of the slowpokes bec I get distracted replying to others. But that’s ok.
I just fast-forward if I want to catch up or I just proceed at my own pace and post out-of-order. There are no hard and fast rules.
You can also make notes prior to the rewatch and then just copy and paste them.
Really, the fun part is refreshing the page and finding new comments to respond to. You’re chatting with us all at a virtual party.

I reassure some people, I didn’t eat spicy ramyon yesterday, I didn’t suffer this morning! 🙂
Except for unforeseen events, I will have the pleasure to savor the blunders and the tasty cheek of JP in your company.
For a slightly distracted viewer like me, I couldn’t sufficiently measure this character at the first viewing, and all his comic potential. The rendition is skillful enough to minimize the way this character is a nuisance. This is well hidden by this actor with a constant face, and who sometimes, by chance, gives acceptable advice, or who gives the impression of holding the truth so much he is so sure of himself. He is different and more subtle than other extravagant and aggressive mentors, such as the one in the movie “Whiplash” or the movie “Strass”. No wonder he has been able to lure so many people, starting with those in his environment into drama, even Dal Mi, and have troops of fan girls in pamoison. Although for me it remains a bit of a mystery because he is not a charismatic person.
So I have a lot of fun watching the episodes again, because I discover elements that I passed over too quickly the first time. I didn’t expect such subtle treatment from the scriptwriter, who used to hit hard and fast in her other dramas.

Jumping in and join you all though I may be interrupted halfway. I remember watching this episode and feeling a sense of foreboding and worrying if Yongsan was doing something fishy. Coming to full circle, these guys really know what they are doing, and like what Dosan said you can never back up too much.
Still loving that small gesture of Dosan adjusting Dalmi’s collar and she closing his bag. Paired with Dosan helping Chulsan to close the bag but he isn’t appreciating it😅

This time Dal-mi’s reply to Do-san ‘What do you like about me?’ was more convincing and assuring for Do-san; the reason Dal-mi like his hand, injured becos he smashed Won’s nameplate, supported her the whole time.
Was there a time JP had outwardly showed his affections in front of Dal-mi? Lol even the time he confessed his feelings to her, he seemed awkward.

JP is heart-warming and adorable, but in this scene I understand why he’ll never get the girl (or rather this girl): He is risk-averse and too worried about losing… He never really pursues DM, because he fears rejection. I mean, he is a great mentor and he gives DM a dose of reality that I think she needs, but he is not the right fit for her emotionally or romantically at this stage in her life. DM needs someone to dream with and to be creative with (like DS) to grow into herself, not a jaded man who tries to clip her wings before she has a chance to fly.
True @Cleo, JP has never after so many years of knowing kindness from Grandma, ever figured out that there’s more to life than money.
He lacks vision for happiness, he only has vision for business.
I like the transition here about ordinary life being hard for some people and then we see Grandma can’t do an ordinary thing like open the door.
I’m glad that Dir Yoon can relate to Dalmi and Dosan about their business idea. She would have been a perfect mentor for SST.
One of the positive things JP did is to tell Dir Yoon that Dalmi can be the girl on the swing.
Chulsan with the fake eyeglasses crack me up! I like this episode because SST becomes a team. BCG aka Saha is now involved and they all have the same goal. Dalmi’s “genius “ is how to make tech user friendly and accessible while differentiating themselves from the rest. She is a user-advocate. She is also a hands person (use) in this case, like Dosan is (create).

@Diane I’m usually not too happy with people eavesdropping but I’m glad that Dir Yoon heard what DM said here. She agrees that there’s something of the Girl on the Swing in the idea. She’s pleased that they are clear about ‘why’ they want to make that app and the rest will follow.
“Like the girl on the swing?”
“Exactly” Dad only had to put the sand there and the girl took off on her own to swing higher and manage better without fear.
So DM had it right, she was in Sandbox so that it would be a safe place to follow her heart in business. If she failed, she was still falling on soft sand because Sandbox did protect the startups.
This episode is about back up. Dosan was JP’s backup yah? Seems like the original (person of the name Dosan) of the original (first letter writer) is better than him.
JP warns DM that “It’s a path filled with hardship. While trying to do good, you’ll fail everyone. You could get hurt.”
The issue from the beginning was that people didn’t want Dalmi to get hurt. Fortunately she had a better nature and turned out OK and was not an entitled brat.
1)Her father didn’t want her to get hurt and so placed sand below the swing.
2) Her grandmother didn’t want her to be lonely and so gave her a fake Do San penpal.
3) With JP the lies continue because he and grandma don’t want her to be hurt.
She’s tough – “I think I actually enjoy hardship.” Her decisions were not to get the easy way, the good life, the money, but to follow her heart.
The mom with her LV trolley on the street is a sight to see. I really feel off how her character seemed very strong at the start but suddenly became a tad bit stupid when she left her husband.
JP tells Dir Yoon that DM and In Jae are sisters.
Another great transition … to the sisters who standing before the poster of CEO Won.
DM is insulting him to his poster face LOL and In Jae challenges her to say it to his actual face.
I like that there is a bookending to this scene later when DM gets In Jae to help her get in to see CEO Won, to confront him. She does say things to his face then!!!
@Cleopatra I think JP the character is pretty adorable. He’s uptight and too harsh, but deep down he’s caring. The actor does make him extra charming, I’ll not deny that 🙂 JP is just imperfect and not right for the heroine. He’s not what she needs romantically.
Oh I think I got it: the reason the siblings were in Start-Up and didn’t leave InJae’s for three years.
Because they were able to see the companies who successfully raised money. They would hack their systems shortly after they get funding.
Like “Just One Day.” They raised 4 billion won.
But they lost 100 million won to a hacker through a ransomware attack.
@Janey, yeah Yeongsil saying exactly what it sees … CS with the fake glasses was such a hoot!!! And DS fell off his stool laughing LOLOL.

When I first watched this ep that conversation about the birthday of Dosan and JP falling on the same date scared me. All the while I thought Dalmi figured out the lie already and is just waiting for the right time to tell the boys.

Director Yoon is a good mentor, but JP is bitter, has a difficult to trust people and he doesn’t let anyone in.
He is going to be redeemed though, because from the very beginning, he was meant to be with Halmeoni.
Halmeoni called him a good boy, because deep inside, she wanted him to be a good boy…
He was negative about Sansam Tech’s programme, but when he learned that it was meant for Halmeoni all along he said he will fund it.
He becomes adorable when he finally reveals to Do-San that Dal-Mi loves him.
“With those hands alone, you erased our past”, that’s JP said.

I like how the scene shifts from Dalmi to the guys and back.. shows the contrast and explains the hardship that goes in a business and what each role play.
I feel bad for Dalmi here because everyone turned her down. But I admire how she remains positive and strong.
The look on Dosan’s face when he saw how the user appreciated his work. Coding is indeed rewarding and fulfilling!
@Cleopatra I cannot disagree with you. It is true that JP realises his mistakes and learns to be more compassionate. i just feel that this potential to become “good” was flagged from the start. That’s why we kind of root for him and feel bad for him.

@Diane I agree. one of DS’s most attractive features is how confident he is about his coding ability without being cocky. Considering he’s not confident about so many things I find this really appealing.

@grace – I got a sit/stand desk at home (reimbursable to my company) given the extended work from home. It’s not as Desker brand but it’s so helpful during the day for ergonomics. It’s worth getting.
Fair play to DM for stating her position and believes so emphatically to PJ. JP suffers from a Pygmalion complex, I think. He feels possessive of DM because he authored those letters that, indirectly, made her the person she is now. DM somewhat becomes this male gaze fantasy doomed to fall in love with him, his “creator”. I do like the Pygmalion trope in some stories, but this drama tries hard to subvert it. DM wants the support of JP, as that of a teacher not of a lover. I like how the drama emphasises the power imbalance between them both, and how JP’s “deception” about the letters is packaged as an abuse of power. After all, he’s the one who got DS involved and orchestrated the whole thing just to quell his sense of guilt.
DM is really naive.
Anyone could see JP is lying, but she trust him.
Sadly for him because now, it’s official !

@GB I’m part of the consumers who get “fooled” (LOL) by PPLs easily. I’m an easy target for social media influencers. Esp this pandemic I think I ordered a lot of stuff online just bec I saw it on a show or instagram. 😅

I love how these two ppl are problem solvers. They don’t back down at a problem but strive to find solutions. Is it grit? Nonetheless even with such an attitude they will still encounter hardships. So it isn’t about preventing being hurt but going through the process, difficult it may be, and emerging with a solution that works.
@Cleo, I wish JP got called up for that Scrunchie Deception. It was terrible that he let the suggestion of doubt over DM’s virtue stay in the air and he NEVER righted that.

The whole answer to your question is how both responded to the question: Do you like DalMi? DoSan said immediately yes, while JP said no.
@Grace, I believe there’s something in what you say. If DS had not shown much interest in DM, JP too might not have felt like ‘pursuing’ her (which he hardly did in any concrete way). He’s too competitive and childish still … so if DM had shown no interest too, he’d probably not have bothered either.

@Gloria Agree! So nice of Dosan to let Dalmi do her thing in the bus. He was watching her with amusement and not even embarrass with what she is doing. And he was respectful and apologetic to the other bus passengers.
He is so sweet and humble also when Halmeoni was telling him why they chose his name. Whatever they saw on that newspaper is still the same Dosan (even better).

We come to the scene where tears fall…. it was tastefully filmed with camera taking the shot from behind DM and the sunset in front of her. Sight was dying away for Grandma… night was approaching. More effective with her body language alone than with her crying face.
I am glad that DoSan told DalMi about Halmeoni going blind.
Being truthful is the best solution there and he was there for her, again.
DS still thinking he turned out to be a disappointment as he talked with grandma. Even though he made noongil for her. The impostor syndrome is so strong. It will take heartache and time lapse to get over that. I bet while working in the US he got a lot of validation for his talent and that built his confidence.

@GB about Jp in the running machine, I think the show wants to emphasise how PJ only does things if it’s guaranteed he’s going to win and how he is getting it wrong, because sometimes success is not always linked with profitability. This is why he never truly pursues DM.
It’s good that DM gets a chance to grieve first… then comes acceptance and making the best of it and coping well. Grandma should allow that early.

Seeing Dosan on his knees begging makes my blood boil! Our poor boy!
I remember the anti-Dosans saying he is being manipulative again and telling Dalmi about Halmeoni’s condition despite her request and JP saving the day bec of his warning to Dalmi. Watching it again further validates my belief that Dosan did the right thing. JP’s warning helped but I think it was still Dalmi who saved the day not him.
@Gloria … that running machine so apt … instead of pursuing the girl or something more worthwhile in his life, he was running running running to no purpose… not catching anything but hopefully exercising well LOL.
Backup has other subtle meanings …
The Backup
Plan = Blackmail voice recording to get the funding/settle DS’s lawsuit
Person = Sister to get in to see CEO Won
Girl on the swing … if not In Jae, then it could be Dal Mi
Even lousy CEO Won had the backup of the CCTV footage to use against DS.
I’m so glad that DM had a backup plan. She was playing the kind of game that CEO won plays. Backup is a good title for this episode.
@WEnchanteur that’s so true. DS swallowing his pride in this scene is yet another example of his gentle masculinity. I love it.

This ending with 3 frames… a total contrast to the ep when Dosan said he likes Dalmi and Jipyeong said no. My heart breaks seeing Dosan crying here holding the scrunchie (shaped like a heart).
Thank God for the consistency in Dosan’s character. I like how he wittingly responded back to JP here. And he is soooo cute with his winking face as he tapped the hood of the car.

what’s the use being deep down a good person but a mean put down person in real life for others really? to those affected it’s what you do that matters not your intention.
JP should have invited DM to eat the noodles with him. Another inaction, lost opportunity. That’s why instinctively, JP is not in love with DM but pursued her because of envy since she is getting close to DS.

Scrunchie scene – JP gaslighting DS on his relationship with DM and putting doubt on DS mind that there may be a love triangle.
JP did a shitty move here. Not the first time he will do this, too. That’s why I will never root for his character.
@WEnchanteur, yes, it did not occur to me, but the way DS countered JP’s shenanigans with that scrunchie was quite artful. He turned attention away from any wrongdoing on the part of DM to what JP might have been doing with a girl’s scrunchie in his car. Hah!!! It was giving back what JP was trying to do where he was dragging innocent DM along into the mud.

Dosan is smart and witty just because he doesn’t have an air about him jp think he’s easy to handle, the way he thought how Dosan will behave with the scrunchie incident showed his real self, an angry and petulant boy.

I’ve met a couple of guys like that before. From man to man, I can respect a stronger guy or a guy who plays fair. But that kind of guy is just something inferior, a piece of shit, that doesn’t inspire any fear, just disgust. That’s how DS probably sees JP. I guess, although the writer isn’t a man to feel that way, I think she’s experienced enough to know it.
