LOL @pkml3 That is a funny/witty post. Yes no need for photocard or driver’s license, just be a cool, reasonable commenter on the TT threads.
Thanks again for the Schedule of the Rewatch-es.
Hey @Packmule3,
Thank you for the kind reminder! Now that I have finished the series, I will be more at ease. π
See ya all tomorrow!
Thanks for setting these up BoD team! Last weekβs rewatch was my first group rewatch ever, and it was such a delight to join in on the conversations. Looking forward to this from Taipei!
Drama finished! YO! π
Episode 12.
2:00 – Meeting IJ and Maggoty.
The director loves to put people’s heads against the side of the picture.
I doubt that it is even useful sometimes. It’s a stylistic effect.
We could give him a 4:3 TV format, it will suit him just as well.
Maybe he’s nostalgic for the time when he shot dramas like this, before 2010…
2:50 – Chi Hong wants to stalk Song Hwa to her new surcussion.
This guy is getting clingy. π
She’s painful too, wanting to go somewhere else.
Everybody becomes annoying, is it the effect of the last episode?
7:00 – Not very clear, this will. I wasn’t sure if it was for the guy in the gang of five, or the son of his father’s mistress.
Episode 12, I still haven’t been able to memorize this guy’s name.
9:45 – An emergency! Maggoty can’t finish her ramen.
Too bad, I would have liked to see her cheeks puffed out and her mouth full.
The writer lacks humor. I would have stuffed her mouth just before the moment she gets the phone call.
16:00 – Maggoty didn’t have time to take a single bite before, as this scene needed her belly to growl during the surgery, and Jung Won to invite her to dinner.
However, my idea still stands: she would have had a mouthful of ramen, but she spits it out. As a bonus, it’s even more disgusting. π
The writer doesn’t think to push the limits of the situations…
19:00 – Confession of love between two residents.
A little out of the pocket…
A little extra mess.
I wonder if the pigeons outside the window will also get their cooing scene. π
I don’t think the girl was listening, it looks like she was absorbed in a daydream. Was she thinking about something else?
23:10 – Yang Suk Hyung reads management books.
Is he going to leave too, to run his father’s company?
They are all so annoying, all wanting to leave in this episode.
– Ik-jun’s sister.
– Song Hwa.
– The resident who wants to follow Song Hwa.
– Jung Won.
– Suk Hyung.
And who else, after that?
26:30 – Suk Hyung tells Ik-Jun that he told Min-Ha to meet a guy other than him.
So predictable in this drama.
I mean: not the fact that he rejects her.
But the fact that we learn this in a third party conversation instead of seeing the scene.
Of course, it didn’t have to be shown before.
But when he starts talking, instead… Flashback!
It’s not the kind of thing that’s hard to put together. How many times have I seen this trick used? Just in episode 3 of W, from 8:00, when Yeon-Joo reads her father’s written reports. There, it’s an avalanche of montages and different flashbacks. A crazy rendering that farted to death! Maximum screenplay!
I gave up to note all the scenes where this kind of thing takes place, but since I stopped talking about it, I’ve seen so many!
My theory that the writer did this to favor the reaction of the characters who talk about it, or to have a natural rendering, doesn’t even hold water. The proof: she does use the flashback or montage trick to show the scenes, a few times. And anyway, even using this trick, there is still enough time to show the character’s reaction.
This gives me the impression of a script where the writer is not careful about what she writes. Or else, too much focused on other points. The character design for example. Making her forget to write a screenplay, and all the important points of this kind of writing.
Moreover, I learn that this drama had 4 years of preparation? 4 years to write 16 hours? Full time? By a professional? With assistants?
1:00:00 – An emotional scene that works, moving.
Resolution of the twins storyline.
I realize that the last episode is 1h50 ?!
1:16:00 – The director’s style is always the same. A sequence of shots:
– Faces stuck against one side of the screen. Even if there is no narrative reason.
– A short shot a little more centered.
– A shot with a view slightly from below.
And sometimes, reversing the shot, the character changes direction. This often gives a slightly illegible understanding.
I understood his style a little more generally. There is a lot of change of shot in static scene. Maybe to break the boredom? It doesn’t work very well either. Everything is very repetitive in what he does, even shots. The characters are rarely seen up close. Sometimes it’s better to stay focused on a character for a long time to capture all his expressions.
Example, Jang Ok-Jung, episode 10, 57:15.
Here is an emblematic scene. Filmed in a stripped way, concentrated on the expressions of two characters. Close-up, identical shots, so as not to disturb the audience’s concentration, so that they can instantly acquire the faces in the same position. At most, one or two different, non-disturbing shots at the beginning of the scene only. The effect is extremely powerful. This assumes of course that the dialogue and emotion of the characters is important. That the story has something striking to say. The use of close-ups brings out every detail of the actors. Sublime acting performance. It produces one of those rare moments of unsurpassed emotion.
Then I didn’t have time to take notes and Timecode…
Flashback Maggoty meets Jung Won.
The screenwriter doesn’t think of some details that might be funny.
Maggoty was eating, with dirty hands.
Then she shakes hands with Jung Won. It makes sense to me that Jung Won would act like nothing happened out of politeness. But then he shakes hands with other people.
So either:
– He doesn’t shake their hand out of politeness, bows to them, and cleans his hand.
– Or funnier, he shakes their hand, and we see one of the other interns surprised, a little disgusted, who cleans his hand immediately after.
Winter kiss:
The closeness between Jung Won and Maggoty has been very forced for several episodes.
On the girl’s side, I understand perfectly her motivations. On the other hand, it is not the case on Jung Won’s side. So, I can’t believe in the sentimental relationship.
Note that even with the couple Jung Won and Song Hwa, I will not believe in it either in the state of the drama now. They seem like very good friends, but there is no attraction that is shown enough.
Jung Won’s behavior is not clear at all. For someone who wanted to be a priest, this guy is shady. When he kisses Maggoty, we see that he sheds a tear. And it’s very weird. It’s like a guy who voluntarily chooses Plan B instead of Plan A. While Song Hwa is going to leave for a year. That’s the meaning I give to “Winter”. We see the snow falling, Song Hwa makes the remark. It means that Jung Won is not honest in his feelings. I know, it sounds bad for an ex-future priest. But seeing his attitude throughout the drama, it wouldn’t surprise me. He’s not a morally perfect guy, as they would have you believe. I see it that way for now.
Last scene of the season:
This is a very weak scene to end a drama.
Yang Suk Hyung gets a phone call, we see the name of the person calling him. No idea who it is. A name that was probably peddled in a dialogue, then forgotten.
Not only is the scene poor but also not understandable.
It gives the impression of having cut in the middle of the episode.
GENERAL OPINION.
It will not surprise: this drama was catastrophic, watching it was exhausting.
It’s a synthesis of what I don’t want to see, hear or do.
I have already listed the mistakes made: Direction, always the same shots, for no reason. Incessant verbiage, filled with identical scenes around a table. Dull and often incomprehensible dialogues, referring to other people. Inability to show the events, substituted by characters telling them. Elongated scenes, looking almost like fillers. Incapacity to push the situations to their limit.
In a word : BORING.
However, starting from a disastrous situation (I dropped the drama several times) :
– The few positives I could find helped me to continue it. You settle for little when you come from nothing.
– Once you get past the first third of the drama, there are more understandable moments or interesting scenes. There are even storylines!
– The construction of the characters is interesting. Just look at the character of Maggoty, which is one of the best done, thanks to the actress too.
– Maggoty was almost always funny. I would like to have a compilation of all her scenes. π
– Some scenes worked for me, in terms of emotion. Nothing crazy compared to other dramas, but it’s still a win-win.
– Some scenes were funny, benefiting from finely calculated dialogue. Not on the whole dialogue but at least on its conclusion.
– It is possible that a few more scenes have this quality, but the dialogue being so confusing, this moment is missed.
– On some details that matter in the writer’s mind, she did think to develop them. She didn’t think of everything, but at least that.
– I got acclimated to the game around the characters, and it was very nice to talk to fans of the drama about it.
– That’s something I’ve said elsewhere. In any drama, even the bad ones, you always end up getting attached or acclimated to the characters. So, inevitably, I am curious to know their future.
– I thank the fans of the drama here, who were all nice, without exception. They didn’t blame me for my regular scathing analysis. Without them, I would never have had the motivation to see this drama in its entirety.
Thank you for your analyses @WE. You’ve put into words why although I liked parts of this show well enough to watch it, it never had the impact of a compulsive slice of life drama. I cared about the characters but not as much as I’ve cared for many other characters in other shows. It could have been so much better.
So you’re all set for S2, and we hope that it will be a series that will be less difficult or more fun to watch.
Thanks for your review @WE π ShinLee indeed did really well in ruining their characterisation for the sake of their trolling. It’s unfortunate. HP could have been better like what R88 gave us. HP could have been more dramatic as RDTK S1 but nope, Shin is too scared of melodramatic. And what you get is just a half cooked, touch and go emotional flings, like chipsmore. Now you see me, now you don’t π€·ββοΈ. Let’s see if they improve for the better in S2π
just shot an email to the BODs, please let me join in on the fun for SEASON 2 π
