Last year, when Episode 7 ended in a cliffhanger, people were speculating whether JW accepted Jang’s invitation to eat out together or not. I guessed that he rejected her. Here was my explanation. Lol. I didn’t base it on wishful thinking. I based it on the theme of the episode. To me, this writer doesn’t create random scenes. She writes the individual stories and subplots to revolve around a major theme.

@angelwingssf asked:
I think you guys might be able to answer my question. In ep 7, when the fab 5 are singing, they show JW with IS and IJ with the kid in between shots, saying “I just realized the purpose in my life has been you all along”, then there is another shot with SH and MH in her bed, and the third shot I saw was JWon with Maggot with her wet drooping head. Is the writer giving an easter egg here? Are they showing the pairings? They showed all the 4 guys without SHwa. So, what do you guys think?
You do know that the theme of this episode is “Divorce,” right?
We saw three stories of divorces in this episode. All three broke up because a spouse cheated.
a. the liver patient wanted to die after discovering that her husband cheated on her. He’d given her his liver out of guilt. Now, she wanted to reject the kidney he gave her.
b. IJ divorced his wife who cheated on him with her friend’s husband.
IJ: I got divorced because my wife cheated on me. I worked at the hospital all day and looked after my son alone. I really lived hard, but…she had an affair with her friend’s husband. At first, it hurt my pride. And I was embarrassed to face other people. I wondered why my life was getting so difficult. It was really tough. But all of a sudden, one day, I realized how much time I was wasting. Wasting my life like this because of what she did to me was doing a disservice to myself….It’s your life, after all. Right?
c. SH’s father cheated on his mother. He got his mother to finally agree to divorce his father. But she changed her mind. She confronted her cheating husband and the mistress in the VIP room of the hospital. She vowed never to divorce him.
Mom: How dare you come here? How dare you come to the hospital where your son works? Aren’t you even embarrassed? Or humiliated? Did you come to the hospital your son works with your mistress to show people that you’re living such a wonderful life?
Mistress: Hey!
Mom: You be quiet. Shut up. (telling husband) Leave now. Stop humiliating my son. Leave the hospital now, you asshole.
SH: Mom. Let’s go. Why did you come here? Let’s just go. Please?
Mom: Let go. Let go of me. (telling husband) You want me to divorce you? Never. Taking care of my health is hard enough, so up until yesterday, I was going to divorce you. But I’m disgusted by your behaviors, so I’ll never divorce you. Before you or I die, I will not divorce you. (addressing mistress) You, quit dreaming. You will be his cohabitant for the rest of his life. And so will your child.
Mistress: Gosh.
It’s in this context that we should interpret the song. It’s about a separation, break-up, divorce or, generally speaking, an end of a romantic relationship. The person singing doesn’t want to delude herself with “false hope anymore.”
I couldn’t find the Fab 5’s version so here’s the J. Rabbit’s OST
.
The person sings to her lover who wants out of the relationship because of her mistake. She lets him walk away, but at the same time, she says that she’s also willing to take him back. She’s even willing to take blame for the past because she realizes that he’s her meaning for life.
Now do you see how it applies to our couples?
Here are the lyrics from Netflix.
“You Always” by J. Rabbit
You were always
You were always
My longing for you
Gets bigger every single day
The pain of not seeing you always
Leaves me with fresh wounds
But you’re going your way
If you want, I can wait for you
I haven’t changed at all
It was you who had changed
So you can come back to me.
If you’re blaming me for my mistake
You can still blame me after you come back
We still have time for that.
I’ll be the same guy that you left
I don’t want to comfort myself
With false hope anymore
For the first time, I learned
What it means to be in love
I’m going to get you back
I just realized that the purpose
Of my life had been you all along
If you want, I can wait for you
I haven’t changed at all
It was you who had changed
So you can come back to me
If you’re blaming me for my mistake
You can still blame me after you come back
We still have time for that
I’ll be the same guy that you left
I don’t want to comfort myself
With false hope anymore
For the first time, I learned
What it means to be in love
I’m going to get you back
I just realized that the purpose
Of my life had been you all along
Now, while the band was singing, the camera focused on different characters. I agree with you, @angelwingssf, when you said that the pairings were shown.
But I think we should also pay attention to the ORDER of the appearance of the characters. They seem to be designed to have an order. The first person shown in the “pairing” is the one leaving — or changing — the relationship.
I’ll explain:
1. Songhwa and Ahn
The camera focused on Songhwa first, then Capt Ahn. Songhwa has friendzoned him, just like she did with her gang.
Going forward, their relationship will remain as mentor/mentee.
2. ex-police and the police friends
He’s leaving the police force after his brain operation, but his friends are still there.
3. Jwan and IS/Pigeon
He drops Pigeon off at her base. He’s leaving her to go back to Seoul, but he goes back to kiss her first.
This is funny.
4. IJ and his son Woojoo
He’s left Woojoo at home at night again. Woojoo has fallen asleep but not before leaving a cookie and warm milk for his dad. AWww…
5. depressed wife and mango
She was leaving her depression behind.
6. Taek’s dad and Sunwoo’s mom
lol. They’re leaving the show because they’ve done their cameo.
7. SH and Minhwa
lol. My guess is Minhwa’s frustrated because SH’s has been leaving too much work for her to do while ignoring her.
8. JW and down-in-the-dumps Jang
My best guess is that JW FINALLY made it clear to her that he only saw her as a mentee…just like how Songhwa regarded Ahn.
JW probably didn’t realize that Songhwa’s advice to SH was also applicable to him.
He should tell her that he wasn’t simply interested in her.
That’s why she looks depressed her. He told her.
Just think. If he accepted her demand (it wasn’t a request) to go out with her “just the two of us, outside the hospital, and not in these scrubs, but in our personal clothes,” she would have been drying and styling her hair, primping in front of a mirror, or trying on new clothes to go out with him…and looking like a girl who won a date with the crush of her life.
But she went to bed with her hair wet.
So yes, @angelwingssf, I think you’re right. The song contained “Easter eggs.” 🙂
Thanks @pkml3. So much to notice and think about!!!
You’re welcome. I’m trying to speed up since we’re doing Ep 10 this Saturday.
Truthfully, I’m inundated this week. There’s still “Sell Your HH” to get through, “MTH” to complete, “Healer” and “HP” to prepare for. It’s a nice kind of busy, but sooooo busy!! LOL.
It’s a holiday weekend for us here in the US. I’m taking tomorrow and Friday off. I was informed that I only took a few days off during COVID; I’m going to use them (for kdramas, lol) before I lose them.
Yes, I’ll watch “Sell Your HH.” I’m down one episode. 🙂
Great @pkml3! I look forward to your views once you’ve watched the episodes. I had a public holiday yesterday, but have to work (part-time) and do my volunteer stuff from today til Saturday as well. I’m going to get groceries now, before it rains. Sky looks a bit risky. We had a nice blood moon and eclipse yesterday, although I didn’t manage to see it with my naked eye.
@PM3 same plans for the long weekend – catch up on kdrama, sleep and read. Yay!!!
Brilliant @packmule3, as always. When i finished watching HP season 1, i resisted the urge of reading your write-ups until I was done w/ all the episodes. I wanted to make comparative notes w/ my own assessment based on your own take. And i had the initial surprise when i found out that the early HP-related articles are password-protected, but thank God i found my way into your Throwback thursdays. And i feel the same way when it comes to Maggot. And yes, i guessed it right too that JW rejected her, based on the closing scenes of her damp hair in the residents’ quarters. But then, there’s a different kind of satisfaction when reading it from your microscopic eye for details.
Thanks for this Post. Your eye for detail is fantastic =D . On another note, this Drama’s Soundtrack is astoundingly good.
JWan and Dove seems to head to troubled waters if the comedic sketch is a premonition (and she will be the one to play hard to get)… but his perseverance will win the day 😉 .
BTW, if memory serves well, in that scene Maggot kicks the air like Cheong Song-Yi in “You from Another Star” did.
