If you’re like me then you’re excited about the “marriage life” of BaWoo and SooKyung and impatient for the subbers to finish Ep 12.
So while waiting for the subs to go up, here’s an open-notes quiz to occupy our time.
There are three scenes. Each scene has multiple screenshots. Go ahead and pick one or two of the screenshots. Share with us what emotion or idea *you think* the cinematographer/director is trying to visually say in that scene.
1. At the beach
2. SooKyung with the King
3. SooKyung With Bawoo
First five posters win an “immunity card.” Meaning, whatever you write is correct. π
Don’t be shy.
Have fun!
Ok, I’ll pick the last series with Sookyung and Bawoo.
My comment? Whether together or apart, they are always facing the same direction.
Whew!
The “looking out to the sea” gives me the impression of looking out into the future. it’s wide open, and Ba Ru is by her side.
I’m weary of commenting, but the “immunity challenge” sold me! haha
π―π―π―ππSee, itβs easy. It only takes a few steps each time until you get the hang of it.
I have not watched Bossam but will take a crack at #1. Life has hard like these craggy rock formations but with the 2 of them united and together, these rocks will become just pebbles at their feet.
π
π―π―π―ππ I knew the immunity card would do its trick. π
I also like the colors. Blue for him, pink for her. I know it shows βheteronormativeβ bias but I donβt care. In this traditional scene, it works well.
π―π―π―ππ Good one, Janey!
I am not as good with words as you are but allow me to share what I think.
In the first set of photos, they were against the rocky background. It can represent the sorrow and longing they both have for one another. As of this time, they are coming to terms with reality that it is best to live separately for their safety. Their temporary parting can be likened to their distance to the mountains. They could be together again, side by side, but it will be on the distant future.
Contrary on the third set of photos. They are now surrounded with flowers. They are now able to live again together at peace. Hence, the flowers to represent the flowery road they will now walk together.
For the second set of photos, the vast ocean on the background could represent letting go. The king reminisced the old days. However, the princess has chosen to live the rest of her life as SY. The king has accepted this and even promised to protect her moving forward. Somehow, the tree behind the king reminds me of how a parent’s love can be unconditional. As children, we may not understand their actions at times but their love is steadfast no matter who we choose to be as an individual or how much time we have spent apart.
π―π―π―ππ Brava, WhiteCanvas! Hey, you can do my blog anytime. π
I am lacking when it comes to imagination but I like scene 1 and Janey described it aptly.
I must say it is all thanks to the artistry of this director and his team that enables us to interpret these scenes in such a deeper level. There are many frames in which they could pass as paintings. Send one screenshot to someone you know and he/she will be able to interpret it different ways. Just like how art is supposed to be.
π―π―π―ππ I know, right? That observation was great. They could have sat there on the smooth rock surface, instead of on the pebbly beach.
@PM3, the pebbles on the beach reminded me of the glass beach in Fort Bragg Mendocino area, where glass (from trash) became sea glass hewn and shaped by the waves of the persistent sea.
Taking a stab at the 2nd scene.
The king and Princess are both standing underneath the trees and the left side of the scene feels “sheltered” as compared to the right side which has an “open” feeling. They both live a life that’s been protected from the outside world notwithstanding politics and Princess has decided on a new beginning hence the yellow flowers symbolising a new start to life I.e. spring being the start of the seasons. Also interesting how the right “open” side was alot more pronounced with the flowers.
π―π―π―ππ
Youβre right. Standing under the trees made them looked sheltered from the elements. But sheβs ready to leave the coop and fly on her own as SooKyung.
I am not good at this, but I will take a stab at the Beach scene.
SK looking into the open sea with the mountains and the dimness of the light gives off a difficult path as big as the ocean. The darkness (blackish) in the rocks that is pictured mirrors her sadness. At that time, she was supposed to be living by herself, whereas BW and CD would be leaving soon. She was steeling herself to face the future though enormous and difficult.
The injection of BW coming into the scene brings more brightness into the scene with the introduction of the red rocks as BW is moving.
Still sadness in the next picture as she is probably instructing BW to move forward with out hesitation and that she would be fine (steely composure). Both of them together and the hug indicates some kind of promise that is made and we know SK always knows that BW keeps his promise. So, the brightness in the pictures indicate some positive talk and consolation from his end.
Gotta run. Work calls.
I would like to compare the two beach scenes of BW and SK. In the first, she is looking out to the sea and also to an unknown future. When BW approaches, we see more rocks, which suggests that they have more obstacles to overcome. We see them embracing and then looking at the horizon together. That means that whatever is in store for them in the future, they will face it together.
In the second scene, we see a different part of the shore, one that is full of flowers and green grass and much less rocky than the first beach scene. BW and SK are still looking towards the sea together, but the background is less harsh than before. The trees are still leafless, but there is plenty of new life around them. What a contrast compared with their very first meeting under the leafless tree (Episode 1)!
I’m so late to the party! I’m not watching Bossam yet so I’m purely guessing based on the pictures themselves and some earlier posts on this topic.
The first set of screens – at the beach – presents them against the rocky landscapes and BW is joining SK who is first standing there alone. As @packmule3 stated before, the rough landscape symbolises the hardships they both are facing. They did it separately at first, but then they came together and could support each other. We see the open sea before them which could mean freedom (especially in contrast to SK’s sheltered past as princess) but also facing the unknown and uncertain future. But before they embrace each other, the perspective and the viewpoint are reversed and we can see them looking at the sea, but not the sea itself. So we can focus on them being together in this rough landscape which is giving us hope, that they can overcome all problems together. To me they look steady but determined. And lastly, after the embrace we can see them sitting together at the beach, and the sea i.e. the uncertain fate isn’t so scary and uncertain anymore, it looks like a peaceful bay, and the frame is including some green trees and grass and we can also see the mountains on the other side, which maybe means that their goal, the end of the journey is within their reach. By “the end” I mean a happy outcome, reaching their destination.
But I almost wrote a novel here π So I’m going to limit myself to this set only.
Thanks for this, providing some respite from work. I chose the 2nd set of pictures of SooKyung and the King.
The 2 trees on the topmost picture captured my attention. The tree behind the King is somehow slanted whereas the tree behind SK is standing firm. I think this shows that the King is relenting and repenting for the wrongdoings he made towards his daughter. He is the one who approaches and touches her face, however, SK is not fully reciprocating the gestures.
In my case, seeing these pictures/scenes, I am not trusting the King yet as he is still a shady character.
[I know we were only supposed to look at and analyze these pictures, but I noticed when I finally watched episode 12 yesterday how claustrophobic many of the earlier scenes felt–there were a lot of close-up shots. It gave a feeling of confinement–especially appropriate because BW is in prison during the first part of this episode. The closeup of his face (after the king has declared pardons for his family) is framed by the prison bars. There is then a closeup of his hands, still in the wooden handcuffs, making fists.]
The first shot in the At the Beach scene (not in the photos above) is a closeup of the princess’s face. The camera pans back as BW approaches her, showing that she is standing on that rocky beach, looking out toward both the sea and a nearby rock bank. He looks at her, standing there looking outward. For me, this symbolized the potential for wider horizons for this couple–yet in the present, they are still on a rocky bank. Also, the princess is the stoic one in this scene–in the last photo she is looking outward (this time in the shot she is looking toward the mountains and not a rocky bank) but BW is looking at her–just as he had in the first part of this scene as he approached her. I don’t think she ever looks toward him when he is not looking at her.
