My Roommate is a Gumiho: Ep 5 Highlights

Now, that I’ve explained the last scene in Episode 4, I can move on to explain Episode 5.

link: The Nietzsche and Fermina Daza Quotes

To me, the most significant line that Mr. Fox said was neither the Nietzsche quote nor the “Love in the Time of Cholera” passage; it was Mr. Fox’s own words. This:

“That you like someone means that you are misunderstanding that person in your own way.”

It was significant because as soon as Mr. Fox finished speaking, his words became true. Dam fell in love with him as he spoke, and she began misunderstanding him, just as he said.

1. Misunderstanding Mr. Fox

a. They walked out of the café, and she said she felt hot. She was just probably feeling flushed because of embarrassment. She fanned herself, and casually, Mr. Fox reached out to touch her cheek to check on her.

She startled, prompting Mr. Fox to apologize.

Fox: Oh, I’m sorry. I was wondering if you were feverish.
Dam: (putting up both her hands to ward him off) No, I’m all right. I don’t have a fever. I’m fine.

Then, she hurried away, leaving Mr. Fox confused.

Do you see what I mean?

To Mr. Fox, to feel her temperature was just a friendly gesture. After all, this wasn’t the second time he touched her to take away her pain. He didn’t mean anything by gesture. But Dam overreacted because she misinterpreted his intention. In her own way, she was “misunderstanding” Mr. Fox’s action because she was falling for him.

Then, when she got home, she texted her buddies.

Dam: This is my friend’s story. Her heart suddenly starts to pound, she had a tough time breathing, then she felt airheaded as if she’s walking on clouds. What does this mean?
Jaejin: Arrhythmia?
Sookyung: When did your friend have those feelings?
Dam: Well, she was just with somebody.
SooKyung: In my opinion, I think your friend fell for that somebody.
Dam: No, that can’t be it!
Jaejin: You said it’s your friend. How do you know?
Dam: Because…

She vehemently denied feeling anything for Mr. Fox. But following Mr. Fox’s logic, the fact that she was misconstruing the little things that he did signified that she was falling for him. She was ascribing foolish and/or romantic reasons to his harmless action.

For instance, sitting on the couch, she suddenly fixed her posture when Mr. Fox walked out of his room to pour himself coffee. Why? Because in her mind, Mr. Fox would care about how she looked like, and she had to give him a good impression.

Then, when Mr. Fox sat on the couch beside her, she was startled again.

She looked like she was about to make a mad dash to her room. Mr. Fox was confused again. He was just making small talk so why did she have to run away?

Because in her mind, Mr. Fox was showing interest and wanted to spend more time with her. Just like she overreacted when he reached out to check her temperature, she was reading way too much into his sitting on the couch with her.

She was misunderstanding him all on her own.

Of course, he didn’t know that she was acting strange because she felt self-conscious of every little thing she did. She was falling “in love”… no… “in like” with him.

2. Trying to explain away her liking for Mr. Fox.

a. She thought her heart fluttered because of the words.

TV: I burn this place down today to swear to die on sea.
Dam. “If I seek to live, I shall die. But if I seek to die, I shall live.” Gosh, that line gets me every time. (then thinking to herself) Wait! maybe my heart began to race because I heard a nice quote from a book. Ahhh. My heart always begins to flutter when I hear great lines in movies.

Note here: I’m glad that she likes to fall in love with words. That’s another thing she and Mr. Fox have in common. Mr. Fox wouldn’t stand it if she was linguistically challenged as Ex-fox Hyesun.

b. She thought it was his looks that made her heart flutter.

Dam: What’s he doing? Filming a TV ad or something? (then thinking to herself) Wait! Maybe I was just impressed because of his breathtaking beauty. I’d be fine if I didn’t have a heart, but anybody with a heart is bound to be impressed by him.
Fox: (spotting her)

Dam: (addressing him) It’s surely so. No! I mean, I’ll be back. (leaving)
Fox: (calling after her) Miss Dam.
Dam: (but she didn’t hear him) Yes. I’m just a huge fan of great lines with a weak spot for hot guys. There’s no way I would fall for him. No.
Fox: What’s wrong with her?

From his point of view, she just gave him the “Whatever!” shrug. He didn’t understand her reaction.

c. Then, she blamed the sunset.

3. Mr. Fox tried to sort out her misunderstanding.

Unlike Dam, Mr. Fox preferred to clear up any misunderstanding with her right away. He knew she was acting weird when she avoided his company, so he texted her, “I’d be passing by your school later. Should I head over there?”

She missed his text so she called him right away.

Dam: Sir, I just read your text message. Did you pass by my school?
Fox: Yes, I did.

lol. He more than just passed by her school. He arrived home already.

Dam: (Sighing) What a shame.
Fox: What is?
Dam: (lying) My bus fare! I could’ve saved on that?
Fox: Then will you wait right there? I didn’t get too far, so I can be there soon. See you at school.

This was cute. They both rushed to see each other, as if they missed each other’s company the whole day, and couldn’t wait to clear up the air between them. He must have teleported there because he arrived quickly. But Hyesun showed up and jumped in his truck to cadge a lift.

Fox: Get off.
HS: Why? Aren’t you here for me?
Fox: You know I’m not.
HS: I can’t believe Shin WooYeo the Great came to pick her up. Dam seems even more amazing now. But how disappointing. I gave you that advice from the bottom of my heart. We never had a happy ending whenever we started having feelings. I told you not to let those petty feelings ruin your life’s work. Did you decide to ignore that?

I can’t blame Mr. Fox ignoring Hyesun most of the time. With her sarcasm, it’s hard to tell whether she meant to be supportive or disapproving.

Fox: There’s no need for me to ignore anything. I never had any feelings for her to begin with.

Hmmm… Where have we heard this before? His reaction is very much the same as Dam’s when her friends told her that she was in love. Both of them denied feeling anything for the other person.

HS: Are you sure she isn’t any different from all the other boring people you met?
Fox: (pauses) Of course. That’s why I’m not going to get conscious. If I distance myself from her for no reason, it’ll seem more peculiar.

He meant that there was no need for him to be unduly inhibited or reserved with her. It would only look unnatural.

HS: You seem more suspicious with those long excuses.
Fox: (spotting Dam approaching) Stop talking nonsense and get off.

Hyesun didn’t want to leave so he made her disappear with magic. (I’ve to add this to his list of superpowers.)

It amused me how scared he was to be seen with Hyesun.

But I should have expected considering the brush-off he gave his female colleague.

When he was cornered by this colleague, instead of his usual excuses, he bluntly told her, “I thought dancing around was my way of showing courtesy, but I should probably make myself clear. I’m not looking to eat dinner with you. I don’t feel comfortable dining with somebody else.”

I’m not sure if the subber made a mistake. But when Mr. Fox said that he didn’t feel comfortable dining with somebody ELSE, I interpreted it to mean he was giving the persistent woman a shove-off because he was already taken.

He already had someone he chose to eat with. Being with anybody other than that person made him uncomfortable.

So same thing here with Hyesun. The passenger seat was reserved for Dam, and anybody else occupying that spot was usurping her spot and imposing on him.

For Dam only.

To me, he was already taking steps to ensure that Dam would have no misunderstanding about him involving other girls.

Additionally, Mr. Fox made sure that Dam knew that he found her prettier than Hyesun. He was clearing up any potential misunderstanding.

An aside: I thought Kang Hana was cute when she wiggled her shoulder.

My bet is she would be the one to first fall in love with Jaejin and cure him of his “goddess trauma.” She was peeved when she realized that to Jaejin, she reminded him of the bully who tried to burn him with cigarettes.

4. Mr. Fox’s denial and misunderstanding

Fox tried to convince himself that he wasn’t falling for her but I don’t think he really believed the words he was thinking in his head.

“Yes. This doesn’t mean anything. Just as it always had been, this is another careless relationship who’ll stay with me for a short while. This isn’t special.”

Then, he offered to take a photo of her. Against the sunset, she looked beautiful.

But he told himself that this moment wasn’t special. He tried to remain unaffected by her giddiness and whimsy.

I say, “Whatever, dude!” He could deny his feelings for her as much as he wanted… if this would help him sleep better at night.”

But because he began to like her, he started misunderstanding her in his own way.

Like, when Dam was complaining about Jaejin to him. She asked him to go out with her. And he said, almost absent-mindedly, “Sure.”

I’m not Korean but I think he misunderstood Dam’s invitation and thought she meant a date. That’s what he said, “Sorry?” He wanted to make sure he didn’t misunderstand her.

As it turned out, all Dam wanted was to take a stroll around their neighborhood to calm herself down.

Sidenote: The first hand-holding!!

But the biggest mistake he made was misunderstanding Dam’s confession.

Dam: Sir, why are you smiling?
Fox: Well, watching you fascinates me. One moment you’re happy, the next you’re upset. One moment you laugh. The next you frown.
Dam: Are you saying I can’t control my emotions?
Fox: That’s not what I’m saying. I like it. Miss Dam. I have lived a long time. When you live for such a long time, everything feels like just a season that will eventually pass. And everything feels meaningless. But you seem true to yourself every moment. I like your honesty.

Once again, Dam was mesmerized by his words.

Dam: I’m in love. I think I’m in love. I don’t know how to describe this feeling. It’s soft and hot. I can’t either swallow it or spit it out. That’s how much I’m in love. (conks out)

Three points here:

One, in my reply to FGB4877’s comment in Eps 1 to 4 Notes, I agreed with him that Mr. Fox’s failure to save the Joseon lady must have had an impact on him. Ex-Fox Hyesun kept reminding him about that incident.

I wrote:

Definitely, he was affected by his inability to rescue that Joseon lady from the Japanese soldier. He could be depressed or laden with guilt.

But he also said in the introduction:

“If you live your life long enough, you become indifferent to everything. The change of seasons. The meaningless time as I pretend to be in love. The emptiness that swarms in from time to time. All of these mean nothing more than countless numbers of repetitions. How much longer must I spend living my life in this indifference?

So he claimed to be indifferent because he was bored of the endless cycle. What’s the whole point of falling in love if he was going to outlive the girl?

But it could also be weariness because he was tired of this whole waiting-to-be-human phase. When would it all end for him? He wanted to be human 999 years ago. And it hadn’t happened yet.

Here, Mr. Fox confirmed that everything felt meaningless to him.

Two, that’s why I said that he needed to learn a valuable skill from Dam, that is, the ability to start afresh when he made a mistake. Past failures, boredom, ennui, emptiness, endless cycles. He could break out of whatever rut he was in, if he had a bit of Dam’s enthusiasm and cheer.

Three, he misunderstood her big time. He thought that she was confessing her love for steamed egg.

She consoled herself that at least she was spared the embarrassment of him finding out how she actually felt for him.

5. Dam’s “Love in the Time of Steamed Egg, and Beef Tripe”

Mr. Fox’s quote about Fermina Daza made such a big impression on Dam that she unconsciously tried to duplicate its vividness and intensity using her own words, with her own description of what love meant for her.

This was the Femina Daza quote again:

“To him, she seemed so beautiful, so seductive, so different from ordinary people, that he could not understand why no one was as disturbed as he by the clicking of her heels on the paving stones, why no one else’s heart was wild with the breeze stirred by the sighs of her veils, why everyone did not go mad with the movements of her braid, the flight of her hands, the gold of her laughter.”

Mr. Fox added, “He couldn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t fall in love with her.”

Obviously, Dam couldn’t be as eloquent as Gabriel Garcia-Marquez. But she was drunk, and the soju gave her courage. This is what she said from the bottom of her heart. lol.

“I’m in love.
I think I’m in love.
I don’t know how to describe this feeling.
It’s soft
And hot.
I can’t either swallow it
Or spit it out.
That’s how much I’m in love.”

But I don’t know about you, but, for me, Mr. Fox’s misunderstanding of Dam’s love confession demonstrated that he was a romantic at heart. Dam’s drunk talk made zero sense to him, yet he tried to find meaning in this madness of hers. That’s how he misunderstood her declaration of love to him as a declaration of love for a steamed egg.

He thought her drunk talk was cute and funny…and plausible.

In effect,
despite being puzzled by her words,
to him, she seemed so beautiful, so honest, so different from dull and boring people,
that he could not understand why no one was as fascinated as he,
simply by watching the changing moods on her face,
one moment she was happy, the next she was upset,
and why everyone didn’t go mad with the movement of her tongue as it burned,
and the gold of her laughter as she slurped the steamy egg,

(See what I did there? lol. Take that, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez!)

Like Florentino Ariza with Femina Daza, Mr. Fox couldn’t understand why anyone wouldn’t fall in love with Dam when he found even the most ridiculous thing about her simply captivating and lovable.

As for Dam, her first confession might have failed but she was a trier.

Next time she confessed to him, she made sure he wouldn’t misunderstand her. She described her growing feelings for him in the best way she knew how: using the language of food. She was a foodie after all.

Fox: Miss Dam. What are you doing here?
Dam: Sir. I’ve been sitting here like this since 10 pm sharp. Technically, I didn’t break the curfew.
Fox: Does that matter now? I said, what are you doing here? (puts his coat around her) You said you wouldn’t worry me.
Dam: I’m sorry. I just didn’t want to go home like this. I really wanted to have some soju, but I didn’t because I promised you I wouldn’t. Beef tripe goes really well with soju.

Mr. Fox thought she was rambling again, and wanted her to get to the point.

Fox: Did something happen, Miss Dam?
Dam: Sir. You said I seemed true to myself every moment, and you like my honesty. So I’ll be honest. You have met many people and experienced many things so I’m sure nothing is hard for you. But I’m not like you. I’m the opposite of cool. We’re supposed to be just two people living together by contract, but I can’t keep my private and public life separate because I’m not as cool as you. What I’m saying is no matter how you think of me, you are special and significant to me. So special that I can give up beef tripe and soju.
Fox: (thinking to himself) Dishonesty cannot beat honesty. Never.
Fox: (aloud) Me too. Miss Dam, you are special to me, too.

And this is why I thought this episode is one of the better-written ones in any drama being televised this week. (And I’m looking at you, “Doom at Your Service.”)

There are three levels to understanding this episode.

One, the shallow level. Which I don’t mind really. I was laughing when Dam was crawling on the floor like a Marine soldier to escape Mr. Fox only to face him at the door because he teleported.

Two, the romantic one. Which is fine with me, too. It’s always fun to see a normal love develop between two unlikely but likeable people. Neither of them is dysfunctional nor codependent.

Three, the literary one. Which I like because I wasn’t a literature major.

In the beginning of this episode, Mr. Fox gave Dam a very scholarly and classical definition of love. He quoted from Nietzsche and GMM. But in the final analysis, what moved him to become honest with his feelings was a college girl’s unpretentious comparison of love to beef tripe and soju. To me, anybody authentic doesn’t have to try too hard.

  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Lovely @pkml3, thanks! No time to really comment, but this was entertaining. I loved that soldier crawl on the floor and her horrific screams when Fox was dead in front of her instead of in the kitchen.

Yup, authenticity and honesty work best. Now to get these two of their denial horses to be more in sync.

  2. @GB, I almost died laughing when Hyeri screamed because I wasn’t expecting him to show up THERE. I thought he would catch up outside, but not as soon as she turned the corner.

  3. @pm3 I’m curious to know your thoughts on Tiger. Any theories?

  4. Loved your Post a lot, dear @Packmule3. One of the funniest things about falling in love (and in misunderstandings) is how we both men and women can mean totally opposite things with the very same words, which is mirrored fantastically (in a meta level) in this episode.

At the end of the day Fox being a Fox and not a human being means that his capacity to misunderstand is even higher than a regular man, but I love how he is aware of his shortcomings and eager to work around them.

  5. FGB4877,

As soon as Dam looked suspiciously at Mr. Fox’s hand when he tried to check her temperature, I started grinning. I knew she misunderstood it — thus fulfilling Mr. Fox’s observation that love meant misunderstandings.

Yes, I like how Fox, despite being a beast, was savvy enough to know about a woman’s jealousy. He took preemptive measures. He finally blocked that colleague of his, then dispatched Hyesun before Dam could see her in his truck, and reassured Dam that she was much prettier than Hyesun despite Hyesun being the “flavor of the month” in campus.

Okay. I want to watch Ep 6 tonight but I still have to write on Bossam. And get started on Doom.

  6. I had the same thought that Dam’s drunk confession was her version of Fermina Daza quote! That was funny. It was cute also that Fox was indulging her and allowed her to drink and was fascinated with her drunk facial expressions and antics. Dam did some good shot glass moves there.

But never did it enter my mind that Fox misinterpreted her confession to him as her ode of love to steamed egg! OMG that was hilarious but a face saver for Dam. Hmm, it felt contrived to me at first that maybe he is pretending. But It gets worse in ep6 with the “niece” response!!! it seems consistent. Mr Fox still needs to be tutored on cues of personal human interactions even after existing for 900 years. He could have learned that vicariously from the books and novels he read. He has a lot to learn, not just in using apps but also interpersonal skills. This will be a rollercoaster of “misunderstandings” from both sides as they navigate falling in love.

  7. I haven’t watched Ep 6, Janey. No time. Maybe tomorrow, after “Bossum.”

Same here, I thought he was pulling her leg when he showed her the steamed egg. But when he looked so pleased after he “thought” he figured out what Dam was referring to that was “so hot. [she] couldn’t spit it out….” I started laughing. He really thought it was the steamed egg.

Do you think that Dam could have been the reincarnation of the Joseon lady? The one with the wind chime? I’m lousy with faces so I can’t tell if they look different.

  8. @pm3 this post is amazing. I commented that episode 5 was “filler” and this has me reconsidering. You are in for a treat with Episode 6! I personally think he took her literally that she loved steamed eggs!

  9. The face of the Joseon woman was not shown fully and clearly. In ep1 when Dam was dressed in traditional clothes, I thought about the possibility that she is reincarnation of the woman, too. however, if they look the same, wouldn’t Fox recognize her and be drawn to her in a different way? There’s been no indication of this so far. Unless being super oblivious to such details is part of Fox’s persona (like his lack of interpersonal skills). That would be a stretch but it’s kdrama!

  10. If we’re going to consider this theory… (here I go again)

    Then I think

    1. He recognized her but she didn’t recognize him since she was reincarnated.
    2. She was inexplicably drawn to things of the past bec she had a past life. Like the Joseon costume she was first wearing in Ep 1, history major, the wind chime
    3. He wanted her to sign the cohabitation contract hoping that being around him would jog her memory.
    4. He lied about the wind chime so as not to force her to remember before it was the proper time
    5. This would explain why the marble jumped out and found her. It was a reunion of sorts.
    6. He’d been patient, indulgent, generous with her from the start bec she was his wife in a previous life
    7. He vowed to protect her bec he failed to do so before
    8. He suddenly decided to turned down the persistent coworker bec his wife was back.
    9. He’d been waiting for her all these years.

  11. 😂 That’s the reason I often skip Open Threads till I’m done with reviews, Good Twin.

  12. @PM3, I only watched half of ep6 when I responded earlier. the Joseon lady is finally shown at the end of ep6 and she is a different actress. So it’s not reincarnation.

  13. Spoiler alert. Clearing up some misunderstandings about the lover Fox had during the Joseon period:

    – She wasn’t killed by a Japanese invader. She died awhile after the invasion because all the life was sapped out of her by Fox’s marble. She confesses as she dies that she knew he was a gumiho. She didn’t condemn him for wanting to spend as much time as he could with her, even though doing so weakened her to the point of death. This was a mistake on his part: he didn’t want to thoroughly drain the life from her. We see him running with her in his arms, presumably to get her medical aid, when she goes limp and lifeless. The reason Fox waited so long to remove the marble from his Joseon love is that taking it back would cause her to lose all memory of him. (In the Doom threads there’s been discussion of vain love. Having someone you love forget you must feel like a vain love. But those who have had a family member fall victim to Alzheimer’s can likely attest that love transcends memory.)

    – Dam is not a reincarnation of Fox’s Joseon lover. There are different actors for the two roles. There’s a brief hint in the teasers for Episode 7 that there is someone who is that reincarnation in Dam’s era, but it isn’t Dam.

  14. Hi pm3! It’s been so long since I visited this blog (since Start-Up🤪) Just wanna let you know I’m so glad that you decided to watch this drama. Can’t wait to read your beautiful thoughts and detailed inputs on the upcoming episodes.

  15. Welcome back, @Idungkulitayam. I remember you from Start-Up. 😂 That was a crazy fun kdrama, wasn’t it?

I’ll write my thoughts down if you share your thoughts too. Don’t be shy now.

  16. Thanks for the spoilers, Welmaris!

  17. I was laughing hard when Mr Fox niece-zoned Dam. Her face and blinking eyes! 😂 To top it off, calling him her Uncle! 😂👏🏻

When Jae-In and Soo-kyung heard it from her about her being a niece-zoned, Jae-In said you were totally turned down right outside the universe. 😂

What a contrast of the two dates, well technically there was only the blind date but the museum illegal entry was nice. I liked Mr Fox’s honesty. I thought the hiding scene was similar to Reply 1988’s Deok-sun and Jung-hwan being trapped between two walls. ☺️

I thought there was 2 holding hands already. 🤔 The one before going to the museum and before they went to the street food stall?

I love that and so true, dishonesty never beats honesty!

I’m really liking this drama. ☺️

  18. Ah! So Mr. Fox counter-blocked her “fossil-zoned!” with his “niece-zoned!” Too funny.

Yes, I’m having fun with this show. Hyeri is making it fun for me. It’s like watching a silly daughter or niece going through boyfriend problems.

I haven’t seen Ep 6. Have to write on Bossum today. But go ahead and spoil Ep 6 for me. You know I don’t mind spoilers. 🙂

Yes, that hiding scene reminded me of DS and JH trapped being two walls in Reply 1988. I only saw the trailer so what happened?

  19. I agree! Hyeri is good here. 👍🏻☺️

Dam agreed on a blind date set up by the two besties. But he turned out to be older and by almost the end of the date, he was telling her that he bought her dinner so she should buy him coffee 🙅🏻‍♀️ and that she should be doing something with her life like a job and making it stable.

Mr Fox was just next to them on the other table and when it finished, he magically tripped the guy with a chair. 🙌🏻

Dam was feeling down when they were walking when Mr Fox asked her about why it upset her that he told her she’s like a niece to him. She couldn’t say anything. He said she really is special. He then took her hand and voila! They were in a museum and Dam was sooo happy. 🥰 He said to her don’t give up on what she likes. In her mind it’s her love for history and him. ☺️ They came after hours so after their quick tour, the guard came in to check and that’s when they hid.

I really like that he really cares and goes out of his way just to make sure she’s ok. ☺️

What about that steamed egg though? 😋

  20. Heyyyyy. I get it. At least she’s moving up the totem pole. She’s his “niece” now as opposed to being a stranger who just happened to eat his marble (no dirty thoughts there, you pervert!). After niece, they could be besties, and then partners, then spouses.

    What steamed egg??

  21. Yes, I love that Dam can have this goofy, bumbling quality about her around Mr Fox but still be haughty and dignified with the other guys.

And gosh!! It’s so hard to keep up with all these good-looking guys. I bet young international fans are wondering where they can find a campus like this in Korea. hahaha.

  22. The steamed egg that Mr Fox thought she’s in love with. 😄 this one.

    https://images.app.goo.gl/ZtZKEpD6tmC9Ebk39

I think I’ll never be able to be as pervert after the Rara eating Jun’s corndog comment. 🙅🏻‍♀️😂

    Good morning!

  23. Hahaha. Yes, I still remember that corndog comment for Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol. lol. YOU shocked me my innocent mind.

Yes, that steamed egg looked good. The funny part about that scene was Mr. Fox looked so contrite while apologizing to Dam, and at the same time, so proud that he made the steamed egg. That moment deserved three facepalm emojis.

But still, Hyeri’s face when she screamed in horror is epic. How did she do that? I wouldn’t be able to erase that from my memory.

    Good night, @agdr03!

  24. My hubby makes a good steamed egg dish. We loved it from the Korean BBQ restaurant but since Covid and limitations, he decide to make one at home and it’s really yummy. I should do a similar ode to the steamed egg the next time he makes it. He will probably look at me weirdly. LOL!

  25. I enjoyed Fox’s reaction to Hyeri’s drunken love declaration in episode 5. I liked that little jaw movement Fox made when his perception of the object of her love changed from HIM to the EGGS. This was in the replay the next morning, about 43.53. He wasn’t outwardly chagrined, but it was his subtle equivalent of facepalm. Still he made good on it by steaming eggs for her the next morning. What fortitude!

  26. I meant Dam, not Hyeri. 🤦‍♀️

  27. I did like how Sir Fox explained to Dam that saying she was like a niece to him was no insult. In all his 999 years he’d never taken in someone as family like he took her into his home and came to appreciate her company. He keeps reminding Dam to not judge him on human terms, but give him credit for learning sentiments that are not instinctual for him. It seems she wants to give him that benefit of the doubt, but then falls back into judging him as human since she has no other point of reference. Her asking her best friends vague questions to get their advice isn’t helping her clearly understand Fox.

I agree with others’ comments that Ms. ex-Fox is generally giving solid advice to Fox. He may look down on her because she struggles with language proficiency, but I see her as being far more emotionally intelligent than he is.

  28. Has anyone asked why Ms.ex-Fox is still able to identify SirFox in disguise? Does she still have some powers even after transforming into human? I curious how she became human though…
Yes, @Welmaris, she is has more EQ than Sir Fox has…even though it seems like Sir Fox has more IQ, or maybe better memory?

No wonder Sir Fox cannot perceive or catch what Dam meant when she confessed to him, twice some more!!! Is he like her in that he can’t catch when someone is into him, like Dam is. When a guy likes her, she pushes them away or feels like she is inferior.

  29. Hi, @grace. Yes, there was a bit of discussion about why she retains some powers – can see through Mr Fox’s disguise and also protects Dam from being bumped by a random (tiger year?) man in Ep. 6. I think Dam will remember that later.

We know that the marble turns blue from human energy. Hye-Sun said to Fox that human energy is augmented by happiness; dating her caused great happiness; she wasn’t bothered by using all of their possible energy even to the point of death. So she truly was a femme fatale/black widow type. 😈 Her victims were ‘happied’ to death.

  30. @Fern @Grace – Hye Sun fits the femme fatale persona. She probably dated a lot hence was able to speed up her transition to human vs Fox. But she may have retained some gumiho reflexes (like able to detect Tiger and gumiho shapeshifting as a girl) but not the powers (erasing Memory, teleportation, shape shifting) anymore.

  31. I know there are production limitations, since a human plays the role of a gumiho, but if this were real, wouldn’t it be tiring for a fox to bear the human shape all the time? Wouldn’t it be fun if Sir’s house had a room that was designed for his comfort in gumiho shape? What would that look like? A big pet bed on the floor? Some chew toys? And if Dam were trusting enough of Sir in his fox form, can you imagine how nice it might be to curl up next to all that floof on a cold winter’s night?

  32. @Welmaris, that had me giggling. He would have the tidiest canine bed ever. Does he allow himself on the sofa in fox form? 🦊 😄 Or would he dig himself a den in his garden? I can’t see him tipping over the rubbish bins.

  33. @Fern, no…no tipping rubbish bins for our Sir Fox. I wonder: when he’s in human shape, are his senses limited to a human’s abilities? Or is a gumiho a fox only seemingly human to other humans? When Dam hid from Sir by the couch, then crawled out of the room, I wondered if a canine’s sense of smell would easily detect her. I wondered the same thing when that poor woman was hiding between cars in the parking garage.

  34. @Welmaris, it’s my first exposure to Gumihos, so I have no idea beyond what I have read or beyond what this screen writer tells me. I’ve been wondering about his sense of smell and hearing as well, but his sense of taste definitely doesn’t match up with real foxes, who are omnivores around here and fairly prevalent in urban areas. I’ve seen foxes in the states but they are fairly reclusive. I think the boldness of foxes where I live (UK) is similar to coyotes or raccoons in North America.

  35. @Welmaries, what you described got me laughing. That sounds like a pet dog more than a fox. Though his beautiful white tails look really cuddly.

Looking forward to know more about Hye Sun’s transformation too…she does sound rather innocent despite being bothersome but caring to SirFox.

  36. Interesting article, about the structure of the script. How the stages of the relationship are built. From an incidental event (the end scene of episode 4) involving other scenes. With for each one an goal such as “does the heroine accept her feelings”. And a failure each time. Then a progression, so that from failure it goes to success, with in the meantime a partial success (confessing her feelings under the influence of alcohol). Secondly, the nature of the incident is also reused, by scenes showing the misunderstandings, acting as a sounding board and giving meaning to these scenes of comedy. On this point, I didn’t make the relation while watching the drama : as usual, seen only once, difficulty to concentrate on both the subtitles and the image, more difficulty to analyze what is character driven than plot driven. However, even without noticing it, I think the incidental event plays its role, on a more intuitive level.

  37. @Wenchanteur, I think that scene at the end of episode 4 is my preferred in the entire drama. I loved that the camera, exactly as he speaks of the beauty of Fermina Daza, focussed upon a particularly beautiful rose in the garland, then the focus gradually changed to the ML’s face as he spoke. It was a very tender scene. The ML’s voice suits the speech very well.

  38. @Fern, nice. I liked most of the drama because a very cute and good actress at clowning. And for once, the second part is enough consistent and funny to keep attention.

I don’t have a specific scene I prefered, but in a weird way, the scene I keep more in memory is the heroïn dream (actualy a false dream given by the god). However, the love story with the SML on this was very believable. Even more than the ML. Just the way there was tenderness on the shots. The script was a bit unfair with this guy, making him a Tiger at first. It make me a kind of effect I had feeling with Love Alarm.

Unlike pm3, I probably prefer love stories with a lot of drama and big challenges to overcome, because it show more the strengh of love than a story where all work quite ok. Obstacles wasn’t big in the drama.

Also, the heroïn is the most of the time in a chit-chat mode (like when the heroïn of Yumi cell activate this mode), and there isn’t so much scenes when she is serious and deep.

ML is also very quiet, like a picture, always the same. Well, not easy to write this guy, as he is 999 years, so it’s valid and logical to make him like that. On the other hand, Goblin writer didn’t hesitate to make an immortal with some childish attitude. It’s not logical, but counter-intuitive and then produce good results. I dropped Goblin because it was boring, but the age gap was well build because I had the feeling the heroïn was more mature than the Goblin. Again, on My roomate is a gumiho, my feeling was that the ML was the uncle of the FL, even at the end of the drama. So I didn’t buy really the romance. Anyway it’s not too serious, as I liked the drama. Side love story with start-up actress was nice by the way.

  39. I agree, the actress Hyeri is very good at comedy. It is a big talent. I liked that the 2nd FL was also funny, because she is often cast as a nasty person.

I suppose the actor had to have some gravitas due to his age, but it’s funny that in real life they are only about 2 years apart from each other.

  40. Hello, @WEnchanteur! I’ve missed seeing you and reading your comments on BoD. I’m glad to see you back.

Our Saturday rewatch group is almost done with Goblin, so we need to pick one to do afterwards. Some would like to do a group rewatch of W, but only if you participate.
