Throwback Thursday: HP Ep 12 SongHwa’s Perspectives

Hospital Playlist Season 2 begins next week so I’m gearing up for a hectic premier with the usual reminders.

This blog is a safe space for Flower Gardeners.

I’ve given fair warning to viewers who ship JW with Jang and/or Songhwa with IJ: You are NOT welcome here. Do yourselves a favor and leave. There are plenty of other drama sites where you can congregate but not here. Give this space to us.

DO NOT dox, harass, and cyber-bully Flower Gardeners on social media…especially while using the names or images of the director, writer, actor or actress as your screenname and avatars. Any reprehensible action a fan does reflects poorly on them, too.

Your mental health would greatly improve if you would just stay in your own lane.

I often think that the Flower Gardeners are the only ones paying attention Songhwa’s reactions, and Songhwa’s the female LEAD.

Thanks @parker and @thunderaven for making these gifs!

I’m attaching a well-loved children’s song from “Sesame Street” to remind us that even a preschooler can tell who Songhwa really likes. Songhwa’s preference is a good indicator of the endgame because she’s the MAIN LEAD, not a supporting cast.

Her choice takes precedence over the extra’s pick. That’s the pecking order. It is what it is.

Gifs from dinosaurridge.tumblr.com.ย  Notice that when the other guys interrupted her while she was working, she didn’t bother to look up.

But with JW, she was pleased to see him.

Gifs from midoring.tumblr.com. Please note her different facial expressions as soon as the guys closed the door. They were telling.

Her reaction to IJ — shutting her eyes and leaning back on her chair — was similar to her reaction to Capt Ahn.

If IJ was already getting on her nerves and they weren’t even seeing each other constantly, her impatience with him would only grow and be magnified a hundred times if they married.

Meanwhile, take a look at her reaction to JW.

Time and time again, she was more brutal when she spoke with IJ. Do you think she was the type to treat a guy she secretly loved the way she treated IJ?

She saw him as a goofball.

Can you imagine her telling JW to “get lost”? I can’t.

Actually, the word she used was even cruder than just “get lost.” She said, “KKeojyeo.” According to wikipedia, it’s on the list of Korean profanities.

๊บผ์ ธ (kkeo-jyeo, –): (interjection) Get the fuck out of here, go to Hell, beat it.

Meanwhile, she talked to JW like this:

If I were a Jang fan, I’d be very afraid of SongHwa.

Homicidal Maniac uploaded by Shinigami on We Heart It

Why?

Because if ever there was a cat fight between Jang and Songhwa, it wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to know who was going to win.

We were already given a preview.

  1. Oh! This is great! Thanks Packmule for pointing this out!

I hadn’t paid extra attention to Songhwa’s body language when the men entered her office and when they left, but you analyze it, you’re spot on–she only looks up and smiles when JW is at the door and when he leaves.

She is besotted (the word Nrllee likes to use) with JW. She might not want the others to know right now and their love may not be “awakened” yet (reference to Song of Songs), but when it does, there is no need to date, Songhwa and JW are already best friends who have similar hobbies (camping, the outdoors, drinking good coffee), passions (helping others, treating their patients like their family members, DDL), personalities, life goals (work hard and lead a simple life spent outdoors during downtime), etc. that they may very well go straight to marriage.

They are already so attuned to each other physical and emotional needs. They can read each others’ thoughts and complete each other’s sentences. Songhwa is a Christian while JW is a Catholic–their religions are well-matched too (monotheistic, worship the same God).

I can’t wait to see their love awakened, because when it is, their love will be deep, unpretentious and healing. I wonder if Jwon and SH will be the ones to help bring them together? Can’t wait to see how this plays out in S2 and wonder if there will be a wedding in Jeju Island (as Rosa suggested) if S2 is the last season.

Believe this passage will describe their love when it is “awakened”:

“Place me like a seal over your heart,
    like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy[a] unyielding as the grave.
    It burns like blazing fire,
    like a mighty flame.
    7 Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.” (Song of Songs 8:6-7a)

Just hope JW won’t have brain tumor (he often has headaches and sometimes takes medicine) or some incurable disease, and Songhwa’s health condition will be under control as well.

Look forward to our last rewatch this Saturday! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Hi there, Hatlady.

Kudos belongs to @packer and @thunderaven. They noted Songhwa’s reactions, compiled them, and created the gifs.

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Oh, got it! Thank you @packer and @thuderaven! Enjoyed these gifs immensely, and thanks for posting this @packmule3!

  4. For sure, it’s in the script !

    IJ enter the room.
Song Hwa – (don’t look up) What ?

    JW enter the room.
Song Hwa – (look up, smile) Hi !

    ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. This! Songhwa’s body language is so telling.
Besides, of all they guys it is IJ she’s least comfortable with, isn’t she? (apart from Ahn when he was most proactive) But maybe this is again the trope that Songhwa and IJ’s shippers are so thrilled about, i.e. when the girl feels uncomfortable with the guy it means she has feelings for him.
Whereas Songwha and JW are so totally in sync, bass & drums, as stated here before…
I know that them being so synchronised and having so much in common means they are above all that dating stuff, and many of you said that they wouldn’t even need that, which is probably true. But I wouldn’t mind to see them going for a date. I mean realising you have romantic feelings for someone who’s been your friend for so long changes the dynamics. So actually I would like to see them when their hearts skip a beat. I don’t mean any awkwardness or so, just seeing how that revelation or awakening as @Hatlady wrote changes them. And besides, Adrea hasn’t been dating much, if ever, has he? So it would be nice to see him taking on that challenge ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. I was tuning in YT for the presscon today during my lunchbreak and many IJ shippers was screaming on top of their lungs : please say Yesssss, SHWa! How can people expect Shwa say yes when it was obvious she was annoyed by IJ proposal???

    Oh well…

Question: can we post GIF in comment?

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @pkml3. Your posts remind me that I’ve already reached the end of my Thursday. I don’t feel ready for the weekend yet!!!

It seems such an obvious thing, and yet we miss it … when a romance involves a reverse harem, the only person we need to observe closely will be the female lead.

This is not a wishy-washy sort of female lead that we have here, but one who is mature and clear about what she wants, likes, … will accept. Her polite silences are only that: to be polite rather than to be outspoken and cause awkwardness. Her silence does not mean consent.

We’ve seen her being a go getter from the beginning and telling people off when she can do it without hurting their feelings.

Therefore watching her reactions more than the antics of the guys, is the way to go.

  8. @packmule3, your firstborn remark really is ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I am happy with how the event unfolds today. Looking forward to next week! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. Old American Lady

@GB, You are so right pointing out the reverse harem (something @pm3 taught me way back when) to show how important Songhwa’s reactions are because she is the female lead. Maggot is a supporting role and is best used in this drama for contrast with Songhwa. Maggot is n o t 3mpathetic, is a technician=not a fully formed professional doctor, is somewhat slovenly, has no discretion, takes food from others but doesn’t feed and most of all is stealthily calculating. She and IJ are both users in their own ways. And I even question IJ as a Dad. HE certainly seems like he wants to offload responsibility for UJu to Songhwa. His wife left him for a boyfriend who seemed like a father to the waiter. In addition, IJ must not be home a lot given the milk and cookies left by UJu or even seeing IJ’s reactions to Uju’s conversation in the sandwich shop. IJ knows his son’s food allergies but doesn’/ seem to know much about his son’s everyday life. So my take is that IJ is essentially selfish and is now thwarted by the fact that his wife left him. It is probably the divorce is the first time that life hasn’t been easy for him. So confess to Songhwa, the most dependable person he knows and offload Uju’s care to her. Problem solved. Ij certainly wouldn’5 choose Maggot for this important job but did sing “Pick me” to her because he needs a resident and an acolyte-selfish to the end. If it wasn’t for Uju, I’# ship IJ and Maggot.

  10. I am finally catching up with my rewatch enough to comment here and I also realized Songhwa frequently having the annoyed eye roll look with IJ, especially when a resident asked SH and IJ what they would do if they had a year off. Granted he can be funny but he doesn’t connect with her.
I did think that incident when he waited for her to pick up the biopsy results was a nice gesture although she already said not to go, so….was it a nice gesture then?

With my impressions on Maggot here I wasn’t too excited when she is starring with Song Joongki on his new drama “โ€œChaebol Familyโ€™s Youngest Sonโ€. News says it that she is reviewing, so not 100% confirmed. Thou shalt not be shallow and let the character cloud my impressions of the actress who portrayed Maggot so well.

  11. Old American Lady

@grace, The actress Shin Hyun-bin andzhas used her /or her agents have used her popularity on HPL to get her better parts.I Ron’s think she has risen to the level of Kim Seon-ho from Start Up, she 8s not am “oppa” to her female fans, but she has gained visibility. Given Korea’s talent and drama popularity ratings, it appears that her work on HPL and t h e notice she received on many websites has made job offers available to her. I’m sure she is happy to get these offers.

  12. FYI Nuggets from PressCon

    – I think theyโ€™ve decided to end it with S2. Shin said there are no plans for S3. Which means resolutions from cliffhangers will occur this season. ๐Ÿ™‚
    – thereโ€™s a time jump forward. Thatโ€™s why we see SHwa back in YulJe. And the residents are now either chiefs or in their fellowship years. And med students (twins) possibly in their early residency.
    – Shin mentioned 3 keywords for S2.
    # relatability
    # emotions
    # rhythm ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. We get the final word. FG. Rhythm section.

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Thanks @nrllee.

LOL I can already imagine that if most of what we get is exposition about what happened in the past year, instead of flashbacks, our @WEnchanteur will be most upset.

I hope to see Songhwa more well rested and in less pain.

The rhythm keyword says more than enough.

  14. Can’t wait to start analysing season 2! A lot is about to happen to build up for the big conflict between the love triangles, this season will be great!

  15. SHwa and her eyes that never lie. There is love and admiration on that smiling eyes.

@nrllee I missed that presscon yesterday, gonna watch it today with my limited korean vocab. No sub available there.
Maybe a series of flashbacks will come out on few last episodes, especially for the endgame (learnt from their dramas before).
That one year gap would be holding much.
I’d like to see them growing, 99s, the residents, twins.

    Anyway rhythm rhythm ๐Ÿฅ๐ŸŽธ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒน

  16. https://www.instagram.com/p/CP5Ypu-sBTn/?utm_medium=copy_link

The post from Bistus is really something …. ๐Ÿ˜Š
And even in the last teaser there are some scenes about Songhwa and Ikjun together: one of them is they drink coffee together.
But, they drink it using a-take -away-cup.
Songhw is a coffee princess, she likes to enjoy the manual brew coffee and served in a ceramic cup.
So far during season 1, she had coffee time using a ceramic cup only with Jeongwon, she even made him coffee in a matching mug.

  17. Many thanks to packmule3, nrllee, miracle23, parker, thunderaven, and all contributers for these threads, so enjoyable and enlightening.

Yup maggot is just a supporting cast, and during her interview, PDshin didn’t confirm that she will appear in all seasons, she can drop out if she wants. So how can she end up with a chaebol, heir of hospital?

Among the guys, PG and SW are the official script endgame pair else season 1 episodes won’t have reflected their similarities. PG character and paternal instincts matches SW, and their chemistry are so obvious.

Oh, I m so excited to see season 2.

  18. @Kanaya Key is the question mark from SHwa to IJ. Itโ€™s always about her choice. Always has been. And her choice is not IJ. Itโ€™s JWon. As for the coffee cup cheers between IkSong? Watch to see who it is that crossed the line. IJ crossed over. She made a polite attempt to meet his cup but it wasnโ€™t half way by a long shot. Now look at the fist bump. ๐Ÿ˜‚.

  19. @oldamericanlady Speaking of contrast between SHwa and Maggot, there is another interesting point of how Shin PD and LWJ show the contrast between SHwa and Maggot through Rosa.

We barely see Rosa-Shwa together, yet SHwa is always in Rosa’s mind, unconsiously. Shin PD tells usย how close they are without showing much i.e in Rosa’s conversation with JWon (If you marry a girl like Shwa, I could join the lord even tomorrow and have nothing to wish for) and SHwa’s invitation to see them playing (she even asked to include Dir Ju, knowing how close Rosa-Ji is).ย

Compare to Maggot, She is a short cut. Instant impulse out of Rosa’s desperation toย her unanswered question : why SHwa doesn’t like her son ? . Without knowing who Maggot really is, she declared spectacularly that her son likes her.

I really like SHin PD’s sense of humour

  20. Another interesting point, in Rosa’s conversation with JWon, her question is : why SHE doesn’t like my son ? instead of asking JWon : why YOU don’t like her ?

Rosa is trying to understand SongHwa’s perspective. She doesn’t have the privilege of an audience like us ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. @BulmaGoku I know. I thought that was interesting that Rosa asked why SHwa doesnโ€™t like Jwon? Itโ€™s as if she knew Jwon already does like her. She taught him how to smoke 20years ago. I keep wondering if it was because he was heartbroken and went to her for comfort and she taught him how to smoke then. ๐Ÿ˜‚

  22. Re the Nuggets from PressCon posted by nrllee: Yayyy! I’m happy that they have no plan for S3. It is a wise decision in this situation – me think. And yes, the keyword ‘rhythm’ is there. Grasp on the keyword(s) like we have to do while doing Ielts reading test LOL.
And I like what you just pointed out @BulmaGoku, interesting! Rosa might know her son well until the fear of losing him to God beclouds her mind (and she came to meet with Maggot).

  23. @BulmaGoku, sometimes I find the Director Shinโ€™s sense of humor to be a little bit sadistic. He likes to strain the audienceโ€™s nerves for maximum impact. For instance, everybody knows where I stand in Reply 1988. Iโ€™m not a JH/Jungpal fan. But that scene where JH was shown running out of the movie theater and driving through the streets to reach Deoksun too late was just too mean if youโ€™re a JH-DS fangirl.

I couldnโ€™t watch the show live so the Taectanic shippers were updating me with a blow-by-blow account in a chat group. When I heard that he left in the middle of Forrest Gump, my gut reaction was that the director and writer were trolling the JH fans. It wasnโ€™t because it was too late for him to reach DS. It was because it was never on from the start. ๐Ÿ˜‚ It was NEVER JHโ€™s endgame to be with Deoksun but the writer/director duo gave enough titillating scenes to raise their fangirlsโ€™ hope.

  24. @packmule as in Monty Phyton : he is not a messiah. He is a very naughty boy this Shin PD ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

  25. Thank you for this post @packmule3!

I want to comment on your Jang thread, but I was focused on DAYS and I haven’t done it so far!

Anyway, our sunshine girl has priority, so I will start over here.

SH’s reactions to JW are the bomb. If you have eyes and you check how they are interacting, you can notice those little things.

I love noticing little things, so yeah. My bet is on Song Hwa. The End!

  26. Thanks for the post and reminder, packmule3. Out of curiosity, would you consider having a general post for HP2, separate to the password protected ones? Given the speculation (I think by nrllee) that the final JW-SHwa reveal may only take place in the last few episodes, there will be other events and couples of interest (JWan-Ik Sun, bear-bear, and maybe Rosa-Ju?). I think there will be a bit more focus on the growth of the residents as well on things they go through.

  27. ๐Ÿค” Iโ€™ll think about your suggestion, @TheWanderer.

But the thing is having two sets of posts โ€” one for the general public and one protected one for the FG โ€” begs the question who is this general public interested in reading my FG-centric posts?

Typically, I wouldnโ€™t mind opening up my posts to the general public. Theyโ€™re my opinion and this is my blog after all.

However, opening up to the general public to the HP threads results into:

    A. Cluttered blog with duplicate postings

    B. Unwanted attention from the crazy WG who lurk here. Itโ€™s like if I leave a bird feeder in the garden, Iโ€™m not only inviting birds, but also the squirrels to come too.

    C. Intimidation of the FG

    D. More headache for me because I have to moderate

The FGers are quite content discussing behind closed doors. Itโ€™s the non-FGers who are requesting to be let in on the discussions.

But for what reason? What is it about our discussions, reviews, analyses, and theories that non-FG find so riveting? I donโ€™t get this mentality really.

  28. @BulmaGoku @Nrllee, we can also add that he didn’t object the question itself (Why doesn’t she like my son?). I mean he could naturally say: And why should she like me? I have no feelings for her. But he didn’t say anything like that and the same goes for the Jeju trip. So as you stated Rosa knows his son.
Why would she then appeal to Jang to persuade him? Maybe she had tried it with SHwa but SHwa didn’t want to interfere with JW’s dream (she wanted him just to be happy wheteher it’s priesthood or something else he chooses). Jang must have been Rosa’s last resort. But even that Rosa could see JW and Jang together for a short while, how could she think that something like that would weaver his almost longlife dream of becoming a priest, I really cannot understand that.

  29. Hope to see you in the HP 2 posts. I will not send my information (the way I did before) again XD .

  30. Totally in agreement here 100%! ๐Ÿฅฐ

@Packmule Thank you for showing snippets of SHwas perspective towards JWon in contrast to IJ, SH and Jwan. Its easy to miss those differences but for sure they (shin/lee) are specific on those to give us viewers hints to the storyโ€™s direction similar to a wind blowing we cant see but we can follow from the things it stirs.

Another example to that would be the race Jwon did not finish and camping SHwa packed up early. It served as a warning of an upset between those two and clues in there pointed us to where the upset most likely have started. Thanks to @Nrllee for linking it to the time Shwa got her lab test result.

Its amazing how all those hints are right there just sporadically distributed.

  31. It ties in well @ArcticMom with the Wind blowing. Because a friend from SHwaโ€™s past showed up during that time too? And her name was BaRam (meaning Wind). This friend had breast cancer which had relapsed. I think it spread to her nervous system. Which is why she turned up as SHwaโ€™s patient. Interestingly, her husband showed up only this time. I think he didnโ€™t show up the first time either. JWon didnโ€™t make it at the first visit with SHwaโ€™s breast cancer scare. Just like JWon didnโ€™t make the Pink Run, he was called away. SHwa told him (only him, no one else had that detail) about the second follow up check up 6 months later. I get the feeling he will show up for that follow up appointment. Just like the husband showed up the second time round for BaRam.

  32. @Nrllee it would be really nice to see them going together to this follow up appointment! I wonder if we are to see or get to know about it. As I understand this season is supposed to make a time jump so the appointment would be a flashback (?) I really like that idea.

  33. Old American Lady

@pm3, Lesson learned-PD Shin maintains tight control over the HP universe. Actors are probably not ad libbing, but following scripted content and vision. So the clues must be followed and past dramas serve as a road map for content. Wishful thinking doesn’t help. And beware of purposeful red herrings. That’s why I’ll follow BOD-the latter day descendants of Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, etc. And be aware of the PF’s sneaky trolls. Emotional reactions are a specialty no matter where they fall. These jeep the eyes on some very engaging drama.Looking forward to the roller coaster and great discussions at this site. Thank you @pm3 and company for keeping it safe for us Flower Gardener detectives…

  34. @Linnea. I think we will get flashbacks. To their med school days, to that year in SokCho as well. Just snippets. A bit like how they did with S1. To give us context. Especially if they are going to end the series with S2. LeeShin need to show everyone (not just us) about their plan all along.

  35. Rewatching HP Season 1 relatively fast, I did notice SHwa’s pattern of expressing her exasperation with IJ and ChiHong: she’d send them off politely, but firmly, then once alone would heave a sigh, roll her eyes, and throw back her head. No wonder her neck needed time to heal: those two kept irking her!

  36. songhwa’s gaze towards jw says everything. We Will wait our flower garden blooms, Wellcome spring ๐Ÿ™‚
