Throwback Thursday: Ep 4 The “Couple” Song

I’m going to repost this as a “Throwback Thursday” (I know it’s Monday) post to hide the comments.

Trigger warning: Nothing written here will trigger Flower Gardeners. If you’re triggered, get out.

Everything’s coming together. The dots are starting to connect.

I’m recapping the consensus we Flower Gardeners have reached on certain issues, like IkJun’s being twin-zoned, the pink piggies, the mealtime dynamics, Jang-beating-god comment, and Songhwa as the “wise doctor.” I’ll open these two posts to the public tomorrow so if you have comments you don’t want to be shared outside, post them in the Ep 4 “Alfresco” thread.

1. IkJun just went from friend-zoned to twin-zoned.

Remember what I said about IJ being a hard pass for Songhwa?

Last episode, the Violinist Brother said that after his longtime friend confessed to him, he began seeing her friend in a different light. “As a man and a woman, not just two friends.”

Ikjun’s fans believed that Songhwa would be influenced to change her mind and make her move on Ikjun after hearing the brother’s story. After all, he definitely made a favorable impression on her with that straw-in-the-nose joke. /sarcasm

This episode, we heard it straight from horse’s mouth that Songhwa saw IkJun as 100% man. He could count on her viewing him as her twin BROTHER, and not twin SISTER.

Depending on how you look at her remark, being regarded as a sibling is a step up (or step down?) from being viewed as a friend.

Songhwa: This is my favorite time of day. When the sun is about to set.
IJ: It’d be even better if it was raining now.

Ahhhhh. No wonder they both liked rain, and she laughed at his lame jokes. They were twins.

Songhwa: Totally. Hey, does Uju like rainy days too?
IJ: No. There’s only one thing in the world that he likes.
Songhwa: His dad?
IJ: No, his girlfriend. He’s head over heels for his girlfriend. They’re so in love.
Songhwa: My gosh. Uju already has a girlfriend?
IJ: Yes. They’ve been going out for a while. Her name is Mone.
Songhwa: Mone? That’s a pretty name.

Remember now Mone is the twin of Mane. They’re named after French impressionists, Monet and Manet. Ahhhhh. This was the writer’s idea of a running joke. IJ had been surrounded by twins since Season 1, because he was the “other half” of a twin-ship.

IJ: She’s Hongdo and Yunbok’s cousin.
Songhwa: Yunbok and Hongdo at Yulje?
IJ: That’s right. Our Hongdo and Yunbok. You didn’t know?
Songhwa: Of course, I had no idea. What a coincidence. Yah. Don’t Hongdo and Yunbok remind you of us in the old days?

I guess she could call him “oppa” because he’s like a TWIN brother, kinda like Apollo and Artemis.

IJ: (laughing) I think I was smarter than Hongdo.
Songhwa: Right, maybe. But you were such a loser.
IJ: (touching her) Hey what are you talking about?
Songhwa: What?
IJ: Come on. I was a fashionista. The most stylish guy in Changwon.
Songhwa: Sure. Sure.

She started singing.

Songhwa: “You’re probably better now than before.”
IJ: (to himself) What’s this song?

Note here: If he’d been truly in love with her, he should have been thrilled that she was serenading him with a “confession song.” Instead, he was more absorbed in identifying the name of the song she was murdering with her off-key singing.

Songhwa: “You have filled this void in my heart. I used to feel so lonely in this beautiful world”
IJ: (to himself) No way. Is this “Couple”?

Couple = Twins.

See the joke of the writer and director here? Twins are considered a couple, too.

Songhwa: “And wander around looking for my other half. What took you so long to find me. Drowning in my loneliness? I love you. Now, you can spend every moment with me.”
IJ: (clapping) Finished. Well done.
Songhwa: (clapping but started to rap)

All right all right
When I saw you one time
I lost my heart to you
Oops baby I’ll be loving you
Forever with you now
Baby don’t go too far
I won’t let you go
Please don’t go
I want to hold you tight
and I need your love
Yeah.

IJ: Are you done?
Songhwa: Yes.
IJ: You’re done now? Then shall we?
Songhwa: Let’s go.
IJ: Well done.

He patted her back then dropped his hand to his side.

Comments:

a. Her mood here was markedly different from the time she told JW the title of the song, “I like you.” She had looked straight at JW when she said “I like you” and the camera made sure her smile and twinkling eyes were unmistakable.

In contrast, when she sang the “Couple” song, she wasn’t thinking of IJ at all.  She couldn’t care less that IJ, who was sitting beside her, was bored and tuned her out already.

She couldn’t care less than he was embarrassed by her singing. She was just singing for herself.

She couldn’t care less that he was waiting for her to finish singing.

b. When she started rapping, he turned his back on her. His body language said that he was full of second-hand embarrassment from her antics. He didn’t view this as a love confession at all.

c. However, in her mind, she sounded like a villain (i.e., cool and hip) when she was rapping.

Note: he fixed his coat on her shoulder but he kept her at an arm’s distance. It’s as if he was scared to be seen as encouraging her performance.

No “eye-smile” like the one she gave to JW.

d. If you research the Sechskies’ “Couple,” you’ll see that Songhwa and IJ were nothing like the couples in the music video. This is an Easter Egg, mind you.

Here are the relevant images.

That’s how a romantic couple would look like. See the difference between the two couples?

e. That Songhwa and IJ’s sunset scene immediately came after the scene with Rosa and Director Ju walking off in the sunset show explicit parallelism. They were walking into the sunset as longtime friends like Rosa and Director Ju.

On top of that, Songhwa explicitly indicated that she harbored no romantic feelings for IJ when she compared them to twins.

To me, her singing didn’t constitute a serenade. She was singing like she was at an outdoor noreabang.

#2 will be the “Pink Piggies.”
