I think that’s a scarier death = obliteration, erasure
than a regular human death = there’s still proof that you lived in keepsakes, photographs, paraphernalia.
But when we have to compare this to fairy tales, I think MRIAG is a “Beauty and the Beast” drama.

There wasn’t really a lot of magic used besides the teleporting, the stopping of people, stopping of bestie and Dam’s brother from beating him hahaha putting up party stuff to welcome Dam in the house again and of course we saved the magic for last, the truck of doom? hahahha
But seriously, it was a good sign that he couldn’t use magic and no more energy using from anyone but why didn’t Hyesun explained to him that incase you disappear, that’s the beginngin of becoming human.
Hahaha. Hyesun with her sparkly — what is that? glowing pencilcase? — “Bye, Gumiho.” It was just what Mr. Pox needed.

I like that there was dating and sort of goodbyes in the first 15 or so minutes, and only 5-8 minutes of angst before we get a half hour of sweet stuff.
It was funny, too, because her brother didn’t want to believe that they were dating…and he even apologized for her.
To Dam:
“Please don’t say anything that can offend other people.”
To Pox:
“I’m sorry. My sister can sometimes be insane.” and he tapped his head.

Wow, Dam’s brother is very bright, emotionally aware/sensitive too. He could figure out that Fox sounded like he’s going away.
I wonder how it would have played out if Dam had not run off like that and the ToD hadn’t come barreling down the road. It gave Fox the chance to make the self-sacrifice that Mountain Spirit felt was so important to being human. I guess Fox’s change to being human would have been delayed.

@agdr03, I guess I feel Fox wouldn’t have bothered with the archery thing if he’d not been wanting to keep Dam by his side.
For a moment I thought MrPox and HyeSun liked each other in the past, when he went over to tell her of what to do if/when he disappears. But having another who travelled in a similar path is reassuring. This is a friendship I really enjoyed watching in this show. Though…Mr.Pox didn’t show as much concern for HyeSun as she did for him.

I like this scene where Dam is searching hopelessly for Fox who just shimmered and vanished. Quite a nice dissipation, nicer even than DAYS Doom’s vanishment. Definitely better than Goblins’ flying ashes dissipation.

@grace, Yes, I still feel that between Hye Sun and Fox, Hye Sun showed more true generosity and humanity than Fox. She kept at him to help although not always wisely, and she was never mean to him, like how he teased her mercilessly on her lack of knowledge/understanding.

I was frustrated that Fox didn’t tell Dam when he discovered he was disappearing. Rewatching it made me realize that it was a difficult thing for him to express and I loved the letter he wrote for her…made me tear up so much.

When she was spraying water on the plants I thought at first it was Fox Rain LOL.
It’s good that she went back to his house, otherwise who’d take care of it and the plants. My question always is, especially for houses so huge (as it was in the case of Doom’s house in DAYS) who pays the electricity and heating bills??!! LOL.
Good question, Grace, does anyone know how Fox’s marble became broken/cracked? Was that why he was disappearing?
@Packmule3, even if “My Girlfriend is a Gumiho” has a special place in my heart nowadays I cannot see it. It is really sad. All what Mi Ho had to endure because everyone around her slandered and misunderstood her breaks my heart.
And yes, Hong Sisters rushed the ending and the show has very obvious filming errors, but if you can endure Mi Ho’s mistreatment you are in for a lovely story.
So we don’t get to see Mountain Spirit but we hear his voice granting Fox his wish, and Fox gets to remember the whole slew of memories that lead up to the present time.
Show does not tell us how long he was away, but it must have been several weeks since Winter turned to Spring.
I liked that Dam brought back her wish at the stone well? which ended up breaking her heart. This probably made Fox realised that he can’t tell her about him disappearing, hence the letter instead.

Maybe the marble cracked because he was truly in pain at the thought of leaving Dam for good.
Hyesun and Fox must have had a different rules from the Mountain Spirit.

I feel a bit iffy about Mountain Spirit requiring among other things that someone waits for Fox. That’s a tall order. Not every lover waits for a long time.

@moonstar512, it makes so much sense that Hyesun would gain humanity 300 years earlier than him. Dam is the one who really makes him human, she will be the only one who makes him cry, feel sadness, be protective, show concern for etc.
Really makes me think about what makes us a human with soul and spirit.

Next morning, there he is, same as ever. I guess the time of his disappearance was so that Dam would have a chance to miss him and decide if she wanted to forget or to keep missing him forever.

@GB, yeah I can question that too about waiting for someone and they want you to live. I think some people can and will be willing to wait like when Dam decided that she will not erased his memories, she’d continue even if she never sees him again. a
@GB, maybe it is their unique challenges that they needed to overcome but i think it ties in to the taking out the jacket when it is cold and hot?
Hyesun, even though was upset that Fox asked her the favor to give up her wish to erase Dam’s memories with the marble, she still did it. That was sacrifice. Giving up something precious to her.
I wondered why did Fox’s time come earlier than the 1000 years. Someone said he still had a few more months. Maybe because the marble was broken?

@Grace, yes, Hye Sun was willing to keep falling in love and hurting over and over so she became human. Fox only managed it once and closed up, for fear of the pain. Even now, he only lets in Dam and won’t open up to more friends and to be more generous. So he’s lucky Dam is as generous as she is, to make up for all that he lacks.

Truck of Doom – seems to be a trope. DAYS and MRIAG used it. So much for not shocking Dam if he dissipates in the house while they were together. The truck scene is more shocking – donβt use cellphones while crossing the street is the practical
key message here.
Dam: I don’t want to forget a single moment. Even if I have to be heartbroken for the rest of my life and even if I can never see him again.
There’s a significance in memories isn’t it? It connects to being strong willed here. She is so strong willed that Fox cannot erase her memories the first time. I wonder even if Dam takes Hyesun’s marble, her memories would not be erased…unless she wants to.
Also, I adore Fox’s smile….it is like sunshine when he does so
I liked that Dam asked Fox why did he suddenly send her home? That’s staying true to her character. She really can sense that something is wrong except it was her brother who made her realised that he was saying goodbye.

HyeSun has higher EQ (we know Pox disparages her on her IQ) which made her become human earlier. I really appreciate her role here, consoling Dam and triggering her to cry her heart out of keeping their memories. I wonder if that didnβt happen, will Pox continue to be in limbo? I agree with everyone that criteria was a tall order turn human but it fits their situation.
And when he came back, Hyesun was crying with relief. Pox needs to be nicer to her.

@GB, @PM3, @Cleo, @Agdr… dear Friends in general, this show has been a pleasure to watch. It has been a healthy Drama with a lot of nice life lessons and practical approaches to solve actual problems.
Show tackled serious issues but solved them with rime and reason, so it never strayed from its core.
Loved that the conversation with Tiger showed real growth for him π . That was Dam for him: the heartbreak that made him reconsider his values and made him a better person π .
Hope this trend continues.
Ah I just watched the seen with Hyesun holding her marble. It was after JJ gave her the nice restaurant list and a first aid kit because he doesn’t want her to be sick. He said he will miss her so much and does not want to leave her and then it was Hyesun holding her marble, I think she will wish that JJ will not go into the army. LOL! Someone can correct me. hahahah

Me : Drama, I watched you just to see how it is but you made me laugh so much and made me happy. You definitely stole my heart with your first and second pairing, heck, I even liked the second male lead for the first time in my drama life.

I watched ep. 16 last night, but slept through this rewatch thread. For me, 4am is too early (unless I’ve stayed up all night).
As Fox feared fading away forever, he wrote the beautiful goodbye letter to Dam. In it, his words made clear she’d become his motivation for living. “You were my only joy, the only reason why I waited to face another day.
Show tied up all the stories and love lines with pretty little bows, didn’t it?! I’d like to say it was all very satisfying, but I was a bit frustrated with the script of this episode. I feel the writer kept moving the goalposts for Mr. Fox. He’s to accomplish certain things in a set amount of time in order to become human, but he must stumble along without knowing exactly what he needs to do? And a key element depends one someone else?
In episode 1 we see the mountain spirit tell the fox the requirements for becoming human:
– Once you live a hundred years with good virtue, you’ll grow a tail.
– If you cultivate yourself and live 200 years, two tails.
– If you come to an understanding and live 300 years, three tails.
– Then you will make yourself a Red Marble.
– If you manage to color that Marble blue with human energy before 1,000 years is up, before you grow more than 9 tails, you, a beast, may become human.
Fox learns in his 999th year, with only a few weeks left before deadline, that it’s not stealing human energy, but developing his humanity that will turn him human? And he’s not told directly by the mountain spirit that set this whole process in motion: he hears it second-hand from Dam? If mountain spirit wanted his beloved son to become human, he should have made his initial instructions clear and coached Fox well, not just turned him loose, then tricked him into redirecting when he was going astray.
In ep. 16 as Fox is regaining his memories while in limbo, we hear the mountain spirit’s voice: “I take pity on you and will make your wish come true. Before 1,000 years is up, before you grow more than nine tails, if you manage to learn to be patient, to love, to sacrifice, and to eventually find a reason to live… If someone who desperately wishes you to live is waiting…” I suppose developing patience, love, learning to sacrifice, and finding a reason to live might fall under “good virtue,” “cultivate yourself,” and “come to an understanding,” but the requirement of having someone desperately wish he would live is outside Fox’s control. And by what standard is that desperation measured? Hye Sun certainly wanted Fox to live and become human. Even the mountain spirit wanted Fox to succeed in becoming human. But it was Dam’s loyalty, commitment, and love that counted the most. She noticed that unlike before, when Fox’s image faded from the picture on her desk, that he still appeared in the pictures on her phone. From that she inferred that he still existed somewhere, and chose to wait for him. She diligently waited for Fox from winter until spring before Hye Sun offered to use her one Marble wish to alleviate Dam’s grief by erasing her memory. Dam’s refusal to have her memories of Fox erased, her commitment to remember and love him the rest of her life even if she never saw him again, is what met the final criteria for Fox to become human: it was her desperate wish that he would live, even if only in her memory.
I’m glad to read I’m not the only one to question Fox’s comment about having his marble crack. When did that happen? What were the ramifications of that having happened? This seems like poor script writing or poor editing to me, if this line of dialogue from Fox causes viewers to be confused. The words he spoke don’t reflect the story we saw. And when he spoke about his cracked marble, he listed it among things that made his journey difficult. It shouldn’t have been a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it blip in the storyline.
Using the Blue Marble to have one final wish granted by the mountain spirit is a lovely bit of gumiho lore, but it feels that information was kept from us viewers too long. Both Hye Sun and Fox knew about it when Fox asked his favor, but why didn’t we until that moment?
As for how Hye Sun used her Blue Marble wish, I have my theory. At her meeting with JJ before he leaves for duty, JJ tells HyeSun, “What do I do? I’m going to miss you so much. I really don’t want to go. When I think about how lonely you’d be alone, I just don’t want to leave.” HyeSun’s response is, “I see.” Since mandatory military service is such a loaded subject in South Korea, with those who seem to wiggle their way out of it harshly criticized by the public, I doubt she used it to get him out of his service. No, as she’s looking at her Blue Marble, we hear JJ’s voiceover: “I still want you by my side.” This is what I imagine: HyeSun wishes to shape shift for the duration of JJ’s mandatory military service so she can serve alongside him. (And that could be a fun gender-bender Kdrama, unless HyeSun becomes a female military officer like Major Lee IkSun of HP2 and bosses JJ around for 18 months.)
Great comments @Wemaris. One other thing I thought was odd was that Limbo for Mr Fox was a posh-looking recliner – sort of an upscale Lay-Z-Boy. That made me laugh. They must have run out of ideas.
But on the whole I loved the last episode. Even Tiger’s sister + Dan. We knew they had to get together at some point, right? They both did the same thing with their sibling’s phones and they had a big fight when they met. It was obvious. She’s a brat, but he’s fairly mature. Yin and Yang; they will meet in the middle at some point.
I was confused about the blue marble/wish thing and attributed it to me not fully paying attention when I was watching the show. So I came here to see if there had been discussions.
I see that I really didn’t miss a lot, and that HyeSun’s wish (if any) was really open-ended.
Like @Welmaris, the first thing that popped in my head was HyeSun will somehow serve in the military, too, so she and JJ will still be together. Though, to me, that would seem a waste of a wish lol. 1.5 years is a blink and a sneeze if one has lived 700 years.
So I also like what @agdr03 said. Maybe she wished that theirs would be the forever kind of love. I’m not too confident HyeSun would come up with that LOL, but hey I may be underestimating her. She seems to be very streetsmart after all. So yes, I will go with that story in my head. π
I didn’t know that the blue marble wish is part of the lore, and I agree that the concept could’ve been introduced much earlier.
But oh well. Overall MRIAG has been surprisingly very fun and fresh and light.
This is my 1.20th gumiho drama. The first 0.20th being the Tale of the Nine Tailed, which I dropped after I think 3 episodes. (That one was a waste of a good cast IMHO)
