Thank you, @Packmule3!
When I saw this scene in an earlier episode, I thought it beautiful, so thanks for these GIFs. But I did think: couple + beach + sunset…uh oh…
Thanks @pkml3. I need a reminder to send a reminder!
@Welmaris IKR!!! After HP every couple scene in the sunset gets me worried. Or if Young Do is in hospital and we get a scene of the couple at the Emergency Centre!!! LOL.
Kalimera ladies!
Thank you @Packmule3 for the new thread!
I agree with you ladies @Welmaris and @GB, about the sunset scene!
Brand New!
Seo Hyun Jin is singing “Falling Flower” (DaJung Version)
https://youtu.be/9a6W3L5v0rA
The Original Version is sang by Yang Da II
Here are the English Lyrics:
Time becomes so sharp and aims for me every night
Scattering my feelings that have grown exhausted over the cold wind
In my heart where only your name remains, it rains all-day
Even if I cry and get over it, the cloud will come again
When will clear skies come into my heart?
I try to wait but I don’t get a break
Once again, why is it so hard?
Once again, I’m swaying as I dance
The seasons go round and round without a word, getting forgotten in just one day
I’m following the blowing wind, as the scent flies around
When will clear skies come into my heart?
I try to wait but I don’t get a break
Once again, why is it so hard?
Once again, I’m swaying as I dance
Once again, why is it so hard?
Once again, I’m swaying as I dance
I’m swaying as I dance

thank you @packmule3 🌷🌷🌷
Hello everyone.. I hope you all had a good rest from the weekend..
@Cleo, thank you for the link on SHJ’s song..
Why do I wanna cry listening to her voice.. 🥺🥺
Hey my lovely @moonstar512
Because her vocals are airy and sad…
I wanted to tell you, that being stressed happens to everyone. Some people hide it pretty well, others not.
We are here and believe me when I say that I have been stressed a lot… Just having someone around you, helps a lot.
You are not alone… ❤️🙏🌹
Seo Hyun Jin has a beautiful voice! I love this acoustic version. Thanks for the link of the Yt and lyrics @Cleo.
Thanks @PackMule3 for giving us this space.
@cleopatra, the song sounds sad and mournful. I hope tonight’s episode will be light hearted.
Hey @Janey and @feifei,
I loved her cover. I am glad toy all liked it!
I hope that too @feifei. In a few hours will know. @GB will have watched the raw version…
Hi @Cleo, @Moonstar, @Janey @Feifei LOL… now that Cleo says I’ll be watching the raw, I’d better get myself together and look for the raw episode. It should be up in an hour’s time, I think.
Thanks for the OST link and the link to the lyrics @Cleo. What a lovely melody and so fitting. It reminded me of some of the music that our Snow Flower composed for PBIO. Light and lilting with an undertone of sadness. SHJ’s voice lends itself well to the melancholy of a broken heart.
Catch ya all later if I can get the raw!!!
My Dear @Cleo,
Thank you so much your words.. Really means a lot to me..I think it is a though time for all of us. To be able to survive from all of these, is a miracle.. Sending you virtual hugg
♥️🌷♥️
My dear YAMS squad..
Fortunately they don’t give us a long time until our leads reunite again. So the scene of DJ’s mother with the fortune teller wasn’t completed before.. we finally see the whole scene.. and is it a coincidence too that the one that keep the light for JYD life is also a “black cat”..
I don’t know how the actor who played JYD did it.. but in episode 13, I saw his eyes were kinda swollen (or was it because of make up?) especially when both of them met in front of the hotel. DJ carried the fried chicken pillows..
My highlight would be when Gayeong went to see JYD. She said everything that I wanna said to JYD loll.. 😅😅
But in the end, it is because DJ who brave enough to call JYD and said all of the things she said. So that JYD run to her immediately.
Also, I was laughing when Gayeong called Patrick using her costar’s phone!! Patrick dreamed about his “hyung” in Sauna together. And now his manager would probably misunderstand Patrick.. lol.. I’m glad that despite of their talks in the previous episode, seems that they are on good terms with each other.
On the other side, I’m not really sure about the thing that Ian Chase/Jeong Min did to Hwang Jae Sik (HJS) in 2003. Did they conspire together to kill Kim Myeong Ja? Did they pay him to kill? But later, the twin want to get rid HJS.. However their plan failed? Therefore HJS threatened JeongMin to did a suicide.
So he killed himself to prevent HJS kill DJ..
🥺🥺
And also about the things that Ian Chase did for his twin. Did he mean about all the sacrifices he made from the moment when their mother gave him to Nanum Jeil PH?
Before left to USA again, Ian Chase told his twin that he wouldn’t leave him alone. I think that he cared for him as his sibling, and also wanted to protect him..
PS: I didn’t hear “Oh Dear” from today’s episode. Did I miss it..?
Hi @moonstar! We both managed to catch the soft subs version of Ep 13, I think. 🙂
I like that those whom one would think are the wise or mature ones are not the ones who took the right action. I like that EH admitted something of her motives and stopped deciding things for DJ. This episode gives much focus on the OTP and their friends’ attempts to help.
I like that DJ’s Mum got to chat with JYD and had taken ‘action’ to give him more lives LOL like a cat. I’m pleased to see the water (moving water) motif emerge again in conjunction with the OTP.
I’m a bit puzzled about what Cheol Do’s and Eun Ha’s dad’s motive is in gathering the residents of the building (He’s the building’s owner!)
Show does not forget to still include Chase’s scene which gives great reveals, summarised by you @moonstar. I feel that’s pretty much what transpired. It seems that what JYD says about a person who goes out of line, thinking that after that they can go back to being normal, is apt when applied to Chase. So this is a twist back and forth in our opinion of Chase.
I need to rewatch the police investigation part to catch Killer Hwang’s words.
It was another good episode where the heart can be put back in the end credits title. Preview makes me think tomorrow’s episode will be fun to watch as well!
I held my breath the last minute or two of this episode, until I saw the street successfully crossed, because I feared the appearance of a white truck of doom. Was it just me? I’ve been so conditioned by other Kdramas to expect that trope that I couldn’t help myself. I’m glad YAMS didn’t go to hat route.
More comments later, but I have to go out for a bit.
LOL Every time protagonists are on opposite sides of the road, I expect ToD. When I saw that they were separated by the road I imagined this conversation on BoD and was chortling.
The building owner had it built into the tenants’ contracts that he could convene them all to meet once a year. It looks like he gave them a very nice meal too.
The thing I noticed is that YD automatically filled up DJ’s water glass instinctively.
Hello everyone? Don’t we just love this drama?
@welmaris, I had the same fear of the white truck of doom appearing at the traffic light too hahaha.
I need to watch with subs again to understand this episode better.
@Welmaris, GB, Feifei
Omg I thought I’m crazy to be afraid of the appearance of The Truck!!! Lol. I’m glad it’s not just me.. well, It seems that we all definitely conditioned by other Kdramas. Thank God the writer didn’t include that trope.
And yes @Feifei, I do love this show!! My monday tuesday will be lonely without this drama..
@GB,
They uploaded episode 13 on Netflix in my country yesterday, before I was going to bed.🙂🙂
I also didn’t understand about the purpose of Eunha’s dad to gather all of his tenants. Did he just feel lonely and want to be surrounded by other people? 😅
Oh and about what DJ’s mother said to him when he didn’t attend to Eunha’s graduation.. (did he choose to go to Cheoldo’s graduation only, and abandon Eunha’s?) 🥺🥺
Andd yes. I wish today’s episode will be great too.
@Skayt,
I noticed it too, when JYD filled DJ’s glass with water. He just can’t help it, because it’s his natural response to others, especially towards the persons he cared about: to help the ones in need..
Kalimera everyone!
I just managed to watch Episode 13, it was a lovely episodes and I really liked how the OTP and those around them interacted trying to find a solution to the mess.
DJ’s mom and the talisman. The black cat with the nine lives more or less. The black cat we were watching when CJ commited suicide.
So here is the correlation between Edgar Alan Poe’s Black Cat and the Black Cat that symbolizes the talisman or the nine lives YD has.
This is a pretty find and shows how the Writernim used and combined intertextuality with folklore.
@GB, you have already said that this Writernim is smart but that was a remarkable evidence!
As for the Truck of Doom, yes that would be so weird… @Welmaris, @feifei, @GB, @Skayt.
There are some parts I would like to transcribe. We shall see If I have the time..
Episode 13 Subbed – The last scenes recapped and transcribed:
Seong Won and Ha Neul are with JYD to watch the birthday video made by SW. When SW goes out to get more beer, he sets his camera to record YD’s and HN’s conversation.
The next morning, he sends the video to EH to show her what YD said, because she’d dismissed YD’s feelings. As usual, she high handedly decided that DJ should not be shown the video.
However when DJ revealed that she’d known how much YD loved her and that she’d helped him to let her go by saying mean things, EH relents. She hadn’t know how much DJ had loved him… she’d loved him enough to let him go so that his heart might hurt less.
At the girls’ camping trip, GY wanted to speak of JYD but EH says no. GY says she wasn’t asking for her permission. (Good for her, she’s not a pushover. EH is so pushy with DJ).
EH : “He left. So it’s pointless (to speak about him)”
GY : “It’s not like he wanted to leave. But I wouldn’t know how he feels.” (GY does not want to reveal that she’d told Ju off herself.)
EH : “At the end of the day, he left her because he didn’t need her.” (Always EH states her point of view as if she knows when she does not.) “If he couldn’t live without her, he would have stayed even if Da Jeong pushed him away.”
(A repeated comment made by this show is that we cannot draw conclusions when we do not know all the background. EH did not know that DJ had heard Ju’s conversation with Det Ko.)
DJ : “That’s not the reason why. Don’t say that. I know that he likes me a lot. When I looked at him he had already been looking at me. He ran when he came to see me. When I said I skipped a meal he got so upset. And he always laughed at my lame jokes like fool.”
EH : “But still he left you.” (EH has a bee in her bonnet about this.)
DJ : “I wonder how someone like that would have felt when he left me.”
EH : “That doesn’t matter, he still left.”
DJ : “I yelled at him, so he could.”
EH : “He couldn’t do it himself, so he made you say those things.”
DJ : “That was the only thing I could do for him. Because of me, his heart, of all things, is hurting.”
In the car home, EH says to DJ ” We’ve been friends for 20 years. But I’ve been so blind. I thought I wanted you to meet a nice guy and be happy. But I think I wanted you to be happy, so I could lean on you. I didn’t think that you liked him that much. I’m sorry.”
DJ gets off near the school where she and Ju had gone to see the crazy tree. She tells EH : “Because I miss doing crazy things?”
She sees the light literally and later on, figuratively, at the top of the long flight of steps as she climbs up.

EH sends the video to DJ
In the video HN says to Ju : “Don’t mind what Seong Won said. He only said it to side with you.”
Ju : “Everything he said was true. He’s a weirdo, but you know he speaks the truth.”
HN : “To be honest, I was quite surprised. Why were you so mean to Ms Kang. You didn’t have to be.”
Ju : “That way, I could never go back to her. I realised that I couldn’t just be a friend to her because I wanted more.”
HN : “So you want to go back to her?”
Ju : “How drunk are you?”
HN lies with a smile : “Drunk enough to not remember this talk tomorrow.”
Ju laughs, then sighs : “I desperately want to go back to her and I miss her like crazy. Whether it’s 10 or 20 years, I just want to turn back the time. I don’t care that I’d be in pain and need to have surgery again. I’ll gladly go through all of that again. I just want to be with her again.”
Sitting on the steps, DJ watches this in tears.
Ju receives DJ’s phone call.
DJ : “I can do it all over again too. I can get slammed by a rhino and fall again. I can do all of that again. So if this is how you really feel, if you mean it, can you come here?”
His reaction is unhesitating. He goes to her.
Ju : “I’m sorry my first instinct is to hesitate and run away. I’m sorry for being like that. But I still want to be with you.”
DJ : “Is it okay if I stay in your life?”
Ju : “Yes.”
DJ : “Is it okay if I help you? I don’t know how to do that yet.”
Ju : “Will you do that?”
DJ : “Yes.”
I like that to make up for walking away, Ju came and crossed the road to her. I like that she offered her hand and he took it. I like the backdrop of lights and the way the camera shot and side lights make it look like they are on centre stage as they kissed.

The scenes that impressed me that much I thought it would be good to transcribe them. As per usual in the parenthesis are my own thoughts…
From the beginning of the episode, when DJ with her mom are at bed.
DJ: Omma?
Mom: Yes.
DJ: Do I have to love someone?
Mom: Of course. Everyone should.
DJ: Why?
M: We need a bigger purpose, than just eating, sleeping, peeing, and pooping.
(How I loved DJ’s mom answer. She is right of course. We need a bigger purpose indeed.)
DJ: I thought you didn’t believe in love.
M: How could I not? You’re proof that I do.
DJ: I thought…I was proof that falling in love with the wrong person will complicate life. Like the Little Mermaid.
M: Who told you that? No matter how awful my relationship was, it still gave me a beautiful gem like you.
You are the only proof of that.
DJ: If I’m the only proof, what does that make Tae-Jeong?
M: Well, he’s proof that you should be careful after daytime drinking. He’s like a life lesson.
DJ: I ‘ll tell Tae-jeong what you said.
M: Go to sleep.
DJ: Okay.
(This scene is a very important one. Mostly because DJ had a false view of the situation regarding her parents and ultimately about Love.)
From DJ’s mom and Young Do conversation at the cafe.
Young Do is unable to look at DJ’s mom. So he is looking down at the table.
Mom: Did you have lunch?
YD: I did.
M: Did you really?
YD: Yes.
M: I heard you’re sick.
YD: I’m fine now.
M: Thank you for coming. I just wanted to talk.
In Gangneung, when I told you to stay healthy…
YD: I’m sorry for not telling–
M: Don’t apologize. Stop that.
I was so ignorant. Everyone can get sick in life. I made being sick sound like a flaw. I’m sorry.
YD: I should have told you about my situation sooner.
M: We can’t always find the right time for everything in life. You weren’t trying to deceive me. If we’re to blame each other whenever something like this happens, we’ll run out of people to be with.
YD: What about Ms. Kang?
M: She’s fine.
Young Do nods and then still looks down. He only faces DJ’s mom when she is talking.
M: She cried like a little baby. I’ve never seen her cry like that. She’d be crazy if she smiled now. But she cried, which is normal.
I’m sure you cried too. There’s this spot that get a strong headwind in Gangneum. Your eyes get teary just by being there, so it’s perfect for crying. You might want to check it out.
Young Do smiles.
M: My bus is leaving soon. You have your wallet with you, right?
YD: Yes.
M: I’m not asking for money. Here. Take it.
DJ’s mom is giving him the talisman.
M: Keep it in your wallet.
Voiceover that leads to a flashback to that Shaman’s scene revealing more about the fate of Ju Young Do and the talisman.
Shaman: And he’s alive right now?
Paper: JU YOUNG-DO MAY 10, 1984.
Mom: Why would you ask that?
Shaman: His life is like a flickering candle. He’s caught betweetn life and death. But the wick’s already burned out.
M: But he’s alive.
Shaman: When you see him, just buy him a nice meal. Don’t get too attached.
M: But what if she’s already attached to him?
The Shaman sighs.
Shaman: Hey. She’s leaving. See her out for me.
DJ’s mom grabs his arm and her voice rises…
M: No. Sit back down. Come on. Sit down!
(Go Mom go!)
M: How can I leave after hearing this? Would you be able to just go home and get on with your day
after hearing your daughter is going to be heartbroken? Find a way.
We return again back to the the current timeline, Young Do is opening the taxi’s door for DJ’s mom to leave.
M: Take good care of yourself.
YD bows : Okay. Take care.
Once again a voiceover is taking us back to the Shaman’s scene. This time, we only listen to their conversation.
Shaman: If this guy were born around this time, a black cat would be standing in front of his candle. Then no matter how windy it gets, the flame will not go out.
YD looking at the Talisman, while the dialogue is being played.
M: What if the cat catches on fire?
Shaman: This cat has nine lives.
DJ’s mom gave advice to YD, we only listen to it.
M: If anyone ask you about your time of birth, tell them this. Now you have nine lives. I bought them for you.
I lit some candles in a cathedral and put up a lantern at a temple as well. If anything, you’ll have more lives than nine, not less.
So it’s okay if you’re already used two or three lives.
My Notes:
>>>
In the beginning of their dialogue, YD is answering like a child, where his friend’s mom asks him if he ate and if he is okay.
I am glad that DJ’s mom actually listened to what DJ told her that Young Do doesn’t have a mom and went to have coffee with him. In order to talk and finally to apologize for the pressure she put him through. That pressure indeed attributed to their breakup.
She is empathetic and she didn’t do it for DJ, but for herself. She regretted adding friction to a matter that is a red flag for YD.
Also, as @Moonstar512 wrote above, we got to see what happened between DJ’s mom and that Shaman.
DJ’s mom definitely has balls. The way she grabbed the Shaman shows exactly that she couldn’t stay apathetic without doing nothing. Like she did all those years ago, taking away her children from her love of her life that was also her abusive husband.

*To be continued….
My agapimeni @GB
Daebak! You transcripted one of the scenes I wanted to do. So I will do the other one!
My agapimeni @Cleo, I posted my bit above, and quickly had to go out. I’m now back and delighted to be able to read your transcription and thoughts. Between the 2 of us, we might transcribe most of the episode!!! LOL. Actually, I’m going to wait for tonight’s Episode 14 and see if I want to transcribe across 2 episodes, so I will probably stop here for now.
Thanks for your thoughts… as I read what you wrote, more thoughts came to me.
Misinterpretation: About the Little Mermaid, 30 years earlier, when Mum was harassed and overworked and DJ asked her about this tale, Mum had said:
“A princess who has the world at her feet falls for some guy she barely knows. So she ditches her family and goes away. But after going through so much hardship, she ends up …dying.”- I felt Mum was bitter and telling her own story in the way she interpreted The Little Mermaid. So we understand that DJ received her earliest impression of the tale from Mum, and that it was a negative statement on marrying the wrong guy, and that therefore it was risky to believe in love.
This Show has started with the premise that we each interpret things differently, and we also do not quite understand others clearly, since we lack background info, and in DJ’s case she even lacked a clear understanding of herself, since she was mistaken that she had a good sense of direction or made wise decisions. An eg of the former is how DJ welcomed the rain that EH warned her was dirty and which should be avoided.
I’m glad to see that in these latter episodes, DJ no longer has much issue in understanding herself.
Anyway, my point actually was that DJ misinterpreted Mum and the story of the Little Mermaid. To have loved at all, and to have had a child out of love, made loving someone worth any misfortune, challenge, or unhappiness that came with it.
The Little Mermaid voluntarily accepted great pain with her legs, lost the prince, and then chose to turn into sea foam, because she chose not to kill the prince to save herself. Her love was true. In Andersen’s original version, she did not disappear but turned into a spirit and would one day rise into Heaven. It was a tale of love that conquered all, and that won Heaven, not a tale that would make one lose faith in love.
We see how nice it is that in hearing the truth as spoken in the video, DJ didn’t reinterpret the truth like Mum had done to the Mermaid tale, but told JYD what he needed to hear and asked JYD all those questions to avoid misinterpretation/misunderstanding.
DJ : “I can do it all over again too. … So if this is how you really feel, if you mean it, can you come here?”
Ju : “I’m sorry my first instinct is to hesitate and run away. … But I still want to be with you.”
DJ : “Is it okay if I stay in your life?”
Ju : “Yes.”
DJ : “Is it okay if I help you? I don’t know how to do that yet.”
Ju : “Will you do that?”
DJ : “Yes.”
No more room for misinterpretation on the restart of their relationship.
Omg I’m so happy because our duo GB x Cleo transcribed the important scenes!!!
Thank you so much my dear GB and Cleo..

Here are the ice cream for you .. enjoy them happily.. 🙂
Will read your transcripts while waiting for episode 14

The Killer-Writer Hwang
It’s chilling how the Killer was a writer of books, and how he committed the murders and cold-bloodedly narrated them as his stories, as if he had been merely an observer instead of the perpetrator.
He’d actually written them, given each murder a title, and bound them like books, as if he might have them published.
Title: Red Blood, Red Spatula
Dated : 2003/3/15
“The 18-year old boy led the man to the woman. (We get the backstory: The minute Kim Myeong Ja opened the door to 18-year old Chase, Hwang rushed in to stab her.) He was overwhelmed by fear like a child in service of a deity.
The man did not hesitate to stab the woman in the abdomen several times. ‘You don’t need to be polite when killing vermin.’ There just has to be justice. That’s all.’
The man shoved a red spatula into her mouth.”
(We recall that Kim Myeong Ja had eaten rice from a red spatula, while half starving the children. It seems that Chase must have spent time telling Hwang the story of how he had been ‘tortured’. He must have furnished the details that helped Hwang make a dramatic murder-cum-story. Why else should he have bothered with the red spatula.)
After this, it seems the other killings were done by Hwang on his own, and were not incited directly by Chase or Jeong Min.
Title: The Hunting Dog on the Third Floor
“The man lured the hunting dog to the third floor. The 18-year old boy sent this hunting dog to get rid of me. He was the perfect offering.”
(We see the scene of how the man was strangled and how Hwang asked him if the one who hired him was Choi Jeong Min, while showing him a photo of CJM.)
We hear that Chase had told Jeong Min to finish Hwang and then join him in the States. Therefore it’s possible that the Hunting Dog (Cho Gwang Hun) had been hired to silence Hwang. I find it interesting that Hwang calls Cho ‘a perfect offering’. It sounds like he’s a psychopathic killer who must have a victim offered to him at certain intervals.
Title : “The Cost of Foolish Bravery
Dated: June 3, 2018.
“A stupid post online was to blame. (Who posted what?) A foolish detective read the post and tenaciously followed the trail into the man’s turf. (We see from Killer Hwang’s perspective, Det Lee Jeong Beom as he questioned a neighbour.) The man just prepared to kill the detective.
(Scene shows that Hwang had asked Lee for a lighter and then stabbed him. He’d taken the notebook that had fallen to the ground.)
Well, he’s a cop, so things got a bit complicated. (We see him on the phone saying: ‘Shouldn’t we take care of this together?’)
The man’s knife cut through the detective’s abdomen instantly.”
Later on we see that the notebook had been thrown into the fire and that it was Jeong Min who had stood by, watching it burn. Killer Hwang considered Jeong Min an accomplice, who should help him cover up the crimes in 2018.
But JM was in over his head. There was supposed to have been just 1 murder, then in 2018 there was a 2nd one, and a 3rd in 2003. When JM’s plan to get rid of Hwang failed miserably, JM’s life was forfeit.
In a sad twist, Chase himself, now, is the hunting dog for VChairwoman.
Ice-cream
Is ice-cream perhaps the sign of normalcy? When Chase was most normal, it was when he took care of little Aiden by buying him and DJ ice-cream. They’d seemed to the ice-cream seller, from the outside, to be a normal family. Nothing could be further from the truth. Aiden was not their kid, DJ considered Chase a guest who frightened her and someone she could only deal with formally. Chase was not like Jeong Min ie he did not really like DJ, the way his brother had done.
In Ep 13, Chase gets a tub of ice-cream but it’s all melted. It was too late for his life to be normal. His hope to cross the line one last time so that he could return to ‘normalcy’ was a vain one.
We also hear JYD and HN get rid of Seong Won by asking him to get beer and ice-cream. He remembered to buy only the beer. Well the 3 guys together drinking beer while eating ice-cream would have been a bit weird, LOL, and their situation was not normal. They were supposed to be celebrating Ju’s birthday, but they were sadly talking about how he missed DJ. So no ice-cream for them!!
Toilet Humour
What a shitty show to be in, if GY’s bid to be funny results in her being time-travel transported back into the present through a toilet!!! I do have to say that GY has won me over. I disliked her a great deal in the beginning, and tolerated her when she was taking advantage of DJ, but now she seems like a pretty good, regular friend to DJ and Ju. Despite she herself being miserable over having to stay away from Patrick, she went out of her way to talk sense into Ju and wanted to comfort DJ, without being too pushy. She also accepted the ridiculous toilet scene with aplomb and good humour, unlike when she was in her diva mode before. She’s become immensely likable.
I prefer her to Eun Ha!
@Cleo, just adding from my notes on your transcription…
DJ’s Mum had just admitted that she was sorry for making sickness sound like a flaw.
Ju : “I should have told you about my situation sooner.”
Mum : “We can’t always find the right time for everything in life.”
(She is maybe thinking about the time she met her husband or the time she decided to leave him.)
Mum continues : “You weren’t trying to deceive me. If we’re to blame each other whenever something like this happens, we’ll run out of people to be with.”
(This is such a refreshing and mature attitude. Most shows have people accusing the one who didn’t say anything of lying by omission. Also, this is so unlike Eun Ha’s attitude, where she unjustifiably lays blame but will not take on any responsibility herself.)
Mum tells him that DJ is okay. She cried like a little baby. She’d never seen her cry like that. She’d be crazy if she smiled now. but she cried, which is normal.” (Heh! Another comment on mental health!!) “I’m sure you cried too.”
I feel that most episodes have a comment on what is mentally healthy or otherwise. Being able to cry at loss is good and healthy. I’m glad both JYD and DJ were able to cry.
Drumsticks and Hearts
DJ works overtime and offers to fetch some cushions for a hotel guest. She’s probably taking on more work to keep her mind off her sadness.
On her way out she hears 2 children speaking of the Dr Hollow toy. The boy child won’t exchange Dr Hollow for any other toy, not even for twin Bad Choices, because Dr Hollow was much rarer than any other toy. DJ smiles at their conversation but stops when she associates Dr Hollow with Ju. He too is much rarer than any other man she’d dated. She too would never exchange the one and only JYD for the twins.
When she arrives to pick up the cushions, she finds to her embarrassment that they are in the shape of 2 huge and unwieldy chicken drumsticks. She has to hold on to them by hugging them, as if they are so precious to her. By coincidence, they are twin drumsticks. Walking along the street and crossing the road, she gets a whole bunch of unwanted attention, reminiscent of the way Chae Jun/Jeong Min had walked with her while giving her unwanted attention.
She ends up dropping one ‘twin’ drumstick and looks up to meet JYD who’s out from the wedding party. It is apt that when JYD was with her, there was only ever 1 twin. However she does not let JYD deal with the cushion, but handles them both herself, as she has dealt with first 1 twin, then the other.
From what she says to Ju, breaking up makes them even worse than strangers, since they are not supposed to even help each other. Later we hear her say that it was the least she could do to keep away from him, to help JYD’s heart hurt less. We recall that DJ had said, Dr Hollow shares his heart. It was a toy with an indented heart shape as if he’d given his heart away.
She’d chosen it as a gift for JYD because she wanted to thank him for taking care of her after the suicide : “The soup was as warm as his (Dr Hollow’s) heart. So too were the digestive tablets, the candy, and our trip to Gangneung. Thank you for everything.”
Now by being ‘harsh’, DJ was conversely trying to protect Ju’s heart. Noble and not so idiotic?
Episode 14 Beginning … LOLOL. I couldn’t stop giggling. Those lovebirds are so crazy, like teenagers in love. I’m embarrassed!!! It was so nice seeing JYD smiling like that.
Episode 14 with subs. Again, delightful.
Our hope or prediction for a new couple, that might have been considered unlikely, has come true.
We get interesting backstory on Nurse Oh.
DJ takes on the role of psychiatrist in an informal way and I believe JYD gets more healing as a result.
And what a lovely ending (which was in the preview at the end of Ep 13) when our OTP discover that their relationship is literally grounded in their childhood, when they unknowingly comforted each other. We have a mirroring scene.
DJ’s Voiceover : “When did you start liking him? Why did you fall so hard for him? I wonder if I can answer those questions like this. Maybe it’s been a lot longer than I realised. Maybe it all started when that trembling wildflower met a fence and was comforted by a small, round candy. I think that’s when I fell in love with you.”

In their childhood, it was JYD who was the trembling flower and DJ was the sweet candy that was his only source of consolation at his brother’s funeral. In Episode 14, the flower who has to bear with the elements (the continued investigation and Chase’s presence) is DJ, and it’s JYD who places the candy next to the flower, to stay by DJ’s side.

@GB
Yes GB!!!! Me too, couldn’t stop giggling here too.. this episode is so beautiful.
I cried when we got the flashback of Ms Oh’s story.. and also on the scene of JYD and his mother.
I’m glad that eventhough our OTP behaved like teenagers (since JYD was a relationship virgin afterall, I laughed when he told DJ that he bragged so much about having a girlfriend, or when he use pomade on his hair, but he looks okay for me though), they still had a conversation like adults. Like when DJ comforted JYD, or when JYD called DJ after the news about HJS was out.
And we finally see how would it be like when they realized the one who gave candy to JYD was DJ. Aawww..
On toilet humour:
Gayeong has been in my heart since I forgot when. The writer made a neat character development for her, I like her now. I hope that she will find a way to continue the relationship with Patrick.
On Ice Cream and Normalcy
I was afraid when the Ice Cream that the lady gave to Ian Chase was already melted anyway. I thought that maybe Ian Chase will lose his hope anyway to heal himself. But the conversation between him and DJ, when finally Ian Chase clarified about who was who in Nanum Jeil PH, has somehow given me hope. Ian Chase asked DJ about Jeongmin, from his perspective. And DJ replied that she would have reached out for him. She even told that it was not too late to change his ways. I so hope that Ian Chase touched by her words because I am.. For Ian Chase case, it’s hard to receive help from JYD because Ian Chase already disliked him so much. However, seeing how DJ and JYD like mirroring to each other, I hope that in this time, DJ will be able to help a “trash” to “recycle” himself to be better.
@Cleo,
I think the scene of DJ’s mom and JYD is one of the best scenes. I see that the way of DJ’s mum treat JYD was like a mother to his son. Yes she is so brave indeed. And I’m also glas that she admits her mistakes to JYD. I’m wondering what was she thinking when she saw DJ and JYD in the tv shows..
Side notes:
– yeayy so it is confirmed Eunha has a relationship with TJ!! So, did Eunha kiss TJ before? When? How? Hahaha..
– Haneul seems very commited to his own feeling. He knows he likes Eunha and he knows Jinhoo likes him too, but he said sorry to Jinhoo when she gave him the flower.. will there be another change for this couple to blooms too?
– Is it just me or we don’t have the previews for next week’s episode.. it makes me even more curious.. 🤔🤔
@GB, the purpose of 99 Building owner / cafe twins’ dad character is a plot catalyst. It is because of his contract clause that the building tenants had to meet at his request, which brought DJ & YD across the table from each other. They couldn’t refuse the meeting without a stiff financial penalty. The reason for his slipping the clause into the contract, if you look at his character, seems to be that he likes to be recognized as a big shot. But it was funny that as he went from tenant to tenant trying to behave like the lord of the manor, everyone yelled at him.
I loved the way DJ’s mom scolded the dad for not being present for his children’s graduations. She knew she was being ridiculous to say he should have cloned himself so he could be in more than one place at a time, but her point clearly was: Make it happen. Recognize the important moments in your children’s lives. No excuses.
I also think the cafe twins’ relationship with their dad is another example of parent-child tension. Cheol Do fears that in his dad’s eyes he’ll be seen as a failure in his life’s endeavors, and Eun Ha fears her dad thinks her a failure for not marrying. These are the kinds of tensions many viewers can identify with. The other examples of parent-child conflict we’ve seen in this show have been more dire: the Choi twin boys’ mother abandoning one and not protecting the other from physical abuse; YD’s mother pressuring him to donate a kidney to his brother, then blaming YD and refusing to comfort him when his brother died; DJ’s father being physically abusive, causing her mother to run away with the children and live in fear.
I finished watching ep. 14 and felt a happy-sad exhaustion, as if I’d been crying a long time rather than just a few tears trickling down my cheek. So much emotion, and I’m glad much of it was felt for good reasons.
I’m going to stop this comment here, so I can finish reading the comments upstream. I don’t want to repeat what someone else has already said, except this: I love this show! I will have to keep a lookout in the future for other Kdramas written by Lee Mi Na. I hope she gives us many more engaging, delightful shows in the future.
Eun Ha is so judgmental in regard to YD because what she sees in DJ & YD’s relationship–and she doesn’t see everything–she filters through her heartbreak due to the failure of her past relationship. When EH says YD should have clung to DJ even when she pushed him away, she’s really thinking her old boyfriend should have stayed with her no matter what. She is wise to have realized her desire for DJ to be in a successful relationship is because she wants to lean on her. When we first met EH, still wrestling with her breakup long after it happened, she depended on DJ to comfort her. In return, EH hasn’t been in the right mindset to understand and properly support DJ during her heartbreak. I’m glad EH opened her mind to DJ’s and YD’s points of view.
@Cleopatra, I like your reminder that DJ had told her mom that YD didn’t have a mother to turn to for comfort and advice, so Mi Ran reached out to him. I imagine YD thought DJ’s mom asked to meet so she could scold him for hurting her daughter; instead, she apologized for unintentionally hurting him with what she said to him in Gangneung. By giving YD the talisman from the shaman, etc., and assuring him he had more lives ahead, DJ’s mom signals a green light for YD’s relationship with her daughter. However, she did not look happy when she saw them being lovey-dovey in the background of the TV news weather report. A mom will always worry…
Kalimera my lovelies! Episode 14 was a rewarding episode for many reasons, but I have to finish writing some things for yesterday’s episode first and I will return with my thoughts about 14.
First of all, I wanted to write something before I forget it.
It has to do with the cinematography in episode 13.
@GB wrote above that DJ saw the light literally and figuratively in that scene where she went near the school where she and Ju had gone to see the crazy tree. In order this to happen, another scene was precedent that was the bridge from shadow / ignorance to light / enlightment.
In the camping sequence, where the three friends went to relax and talk, there is a scene, when DJ was talking you can see that they were not facing the sunset, but they had it on their backs. People are tend to look at the sunset, because it is beautiful and want to engrave it in their memories. But here that is not the case, the three ladies were not facing the sunset, they were not facing the sun, i.e. the light, that means that they were in the shadows.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BZxaW0TIzCmPVpIgtFj0SDo5nOccmvjE/view?usp=drivesdk
Which is true, mostly because Eun Ha was biased from her own break up, as @Welmaris wrote, and mirrored and echoed her grievings to DJ. Eun Ha was not a true friend, whereas GY on the other hand, under her ostentantious and diva persona hides a person who understands too much and feels it in deep lengths.
GY was the one that went to Young Do and talked in favor of Da Jeong. She berated him, not only because she loves DJ, because she loves YD as her family member, as a sibling and not sexually. That’s why GY told to DJ to wait for YD. She knows pretty well how his psychology works.
I agree with @GB and @Moonstar512 when they wrote that these series are dealing pretty well that there are mental issues and we need to pay attention, to go to a specialist who can listen and not write prescription drugs only.
This is the only way to heal. You need to face your grief, your sadness, understand that it was not your fault and then heal.
In case that it was your fault, then simply you need to forgive yourself, which is not easy and needs time.
Mostly because we – humans – have learned pretty well to berate ourselves pretty hard. We don’t know that we need to be gentle and have self love.
Unfortunately, because of mass media we get wrong standards. We have made to believe that some unacceptable behaviours like being bossy is sexy, when it is clearly not.
Why am I writing all these? Because in a human’s psyche light and shadow exists. As Native Americans say which is the wolf you are feed inside you. This wolf wil take over.
At the same time, this is another example that in these series there is excellent writing, but also great directing.
The usage of Light and Shadow refers to the scene where Ian Chase told to CJ the same phrase when they were 18 years old.
In other words, this is a motif. Writernim writes the Series having this motif in mind and uses it in significant scenes.
Couples and their differences.
I was excepting that EH will end with TJ since that Shaman’s Oracle, but I don’t like it. Mostly because EH hasn’t healed completely and she behaves immaturely.
Why does she want to keep their relationship a secret? There is nothing to hide. EH shouldn’t do that and TJ is too condescending with her. I like TJ, he is a good guy, but EH has issues to solve, in order to be a good partner for him.
On the other hand, GY and Patrick have to hide their emotions, they have to hide their relationship from the public that will ostracized them. GY loves Patrick that much that she is willing to let him go, in order not to hurt him and his career.
As for Ha-Neul, EH wouldn’t reciprocate his feelings.
Jin-Ho who does like Ha Neul, got rejected by him, on that match making tv program pilot. It’s a shame really.
*To be Continued…
Kalimera my agapimenes,
As it seems, my first analysis about Episode13 didn’t get through…
@Packmule3 can you check your spam box please?
My agapimenes,
I really liked Episode 14. For once we got to see our main OTP having good times. After 13 episodes where we got anxious, shed tears and we were afraid of what will happen to Young Do.
I am glad by the end of the episode, they both realized that they comforted each other when they were just kids. It was huge for their character development.
@GB and @Moonstar512,
I didn’t except when we started watching “You are my Spring” that the series will give us so great examples of being mentally healthy and show us moments of being mentally unhealthy and how a trauma can change a child’s life.
It is known in Psychology, that if a child suffers a trauma, he / she can deal it and heal it as a child. If not, they have to carry with them in their adult lives.
So, we get to see that those children that suffered from trauma how they dealt it in their lives.
Yound Do decided to help humans.
Da Jeong tried to help her ex -scumbags- boyfriends.
While Ian Chase and CJ decided to “fight back” with dire consequences. Ian Chase became a doctor, in order to hide his trauma that led him have a deliquent behaviour.
@Welmaris,
I was impressed with Mi Ran to be honest with you. Not because she gave Young Do the talisman. Mostly because she reached out to him.
Mi Ran likes Young Do. She can see that he is different from the other boyfriends Da Jeong had.
The fact that she understood that she was wrong and tried to mend their relationship with her apology, shows that she values YD as a person and is worried about him as well.
Of course she would give her blessing for them. Even though, Mi Ran as a mom worries about them, she wants her daughter to be happy.
She understands how important is to love and be loved in return.
She can see that they both love each other very much.
As I have written before, it is for the best to live the Love of your Life, than having regrets…
Here it is, @cleopatra. Sorry it was sucked into my spam box.
My dear @Packmule3! Thank you for finding it! <3
@Cleopatra, I’m glad your post was found. Good points. Yes, it is odd that the three ladies would have their backs to the beautiful sunset. You helped me understand the message behind that.
I want this story to wrap up well, so I’m looking forward to next Monday and Tuesday, and yet I’m sad that it’ll be the last week of YAMS. This is definitely a show I’ll recommend to friends as a good introduction to Kdramas: gripping from the first minutes, with lots of sweet and funny moments mixed in with mystery.
@Packmule3 thank you so much for taking care of Cleo’s comment..
@Cleopatra
While reading your comment, I was nodding my head a couple of times.. hahaa!! thank you so much for making the great points..
– about the three girls not facing the sunset. I thought at first that it was an unusual scene because they were not looking at the sunset, but thanks to your explanation. The scene was so smart!!! Oh how I like this director’s style..
– so on point about GY. I also thought that she has a deep understanding. From GY, I learn something too.. I used “keep a distance” with people like her, who have a diva attitude and seems shallow or annoying. But it might be just a “self protection” mechanism for them afterall.. Maybe I will try to understand more about the people like them. Who knows that we might fit somehow. Hahaa
– I also think that mass media that giving influence us to have a wrong standard is one of the big issues that the writer and the director wanted to highlight here.. I’m glad that we can see a fresh perspective about this. As for being bossy is sexy (this was what EunHa did to JYD before, which was rightly explained by JYD).
@Welmaris,
I will recommend this drama too to my friends. This drama had relatively low ratings while it aired so I think many people missed the opportunity to see this great drama.. I will definitely promote this.. When I enjoy a certain drama, usually I feel a little mellow at the latest episodes.. because I have to say goodbye to “their world”. And I’m experiencing again now.. I feel a little bit mellow because next week will the last week to enjoy YAMS..

Note: If sometime in the future there is want rewatch party for this drama please count me in.. 🙂🙂
See you again !!
Hi @Moonstar and Everyone,
Here’s my take on the movie, ‘Days of Being Wild’ and the Yuddy dance that JYD did with DJ in Episode 10.
For the professionally done reviews… please click on these links.
Positive Review: https://www.efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=11157
Negative Review : http://www.asianmovieweb.com/en/reviews/days_of_being_wild.htm
Balanced Review: http://www.lovehkfilm.com/reviews/days_of_being_wild.htm
Excerpts from the Balanced Review: “An inaccessible art film to some, but a compelling portrait of human emotion to others. Whatever your preference, Wong Kar-Wai’s classic drama is easily one of the key Hong Kong films of the late eighties and early nineties.”
“What’s the purpose of this extended soap opera? For many, it could be the obvious existentialism of it all. Love grows and fades, people behave in disgustingly real ways, and nobody does anything remotely heroic or inspiring. It points to the maddening circle of human emotions, which leads from heartbreak to self-doubt and possibly even the onset of delusion. It’s as depressing as it is real, which is why it’s obviously an “art film.” ”
“This is a movie to discover, and indeed the film improves the more one views it. As mentioned previously, one could view Days of Being Wild and decide that it’s just pretentious existentialism with a too obvious message. However, there are undoubtedly those who will find much, much more in the details Wong has so carefully put together. This is a movie which varies depending on individual taste—the exact antithesis of commercial filmmaking. And like the film or not, this much is certain: not many people could make a movie like Wong Kar-Wai. (Kozo 1993/2003)”
===========
I watched DOBW to know what a Wong Kar Wai film is like. I also wanted to know what the YAMS characters were referring to. I found that YAMS seems to be making a bit of a tribute to DOBW, but more of that later.
Since I go by my feelings after watching a show, it’s hard to review it when my feelings are ambivalent. I can’t actually say I liked it or enjoyed it, but I didn’t hate it either. Since it is a portrayal of emotions, one asks oneself what that emotion is, that one is viewing, and whether one can relate. This is on a personal and individual basis. So I guess it’s good that I could relate to it, to a sufficient extent that I wanted to know how the characters would feel next.
This movie is considered by a critic to be one of the least abstract of Wong’s works, so I expect I’ll find his other works even harder to get a handle on. If one wants a feel-good show, I do not recommend it, however if one does not mind a mood piece, this is fine.
===========
Why YAMS feels like a tribute to DOBW
There are obvious points of similarity in YAMS:
-Prolonged focus on loud footsteps without background music.
-The climbing up and down the stairs, with an exchange on stair landing.
-The framing of just one character or another instead of both at the same time.
-The walks where 2 characters are brought close together.
-When Yuddy stands close to Su Li Zhen, the feeling of intimidation and intimacy is similar to what we got from how Chase came up close to talk to DJ, as if forcing a relationship.
-The reference to the one minute of eternity. I thought it was a great pick up line, designed to stick in the memory of the one who is wooed.
DJ said that in Days of Being Wild: “Yuddy says that one minute will be remembered forever. So this is how I understood it. ‘I’ll be leaving eventually, but this one minute is just for you. No one will take it from you, and it won’t disappear either. It’s a one-minute eternity just for you.’ ”
In the movie, Yuddy shows Su Li Zhen a watch for one minute. The whole time he’s standing in her personal space and his face is inches away from hers.
Yuddy : “Look at my watch! Just one minute, ok?” It was a minute before 3pm.
Li Zhen : “Time’s up, speak now”
He checks the date with Li Zhen: “April 16, 1960, one minute before 3pm. You are with me. Because of you, I’ll remember that one minute. From now on, we’re friends of one minute. This is fact, you can’t deny it, cause it’s past. I’ll come tomorrow.”
Li Zhen’s voiceover : “I memorized this guy. Later on he did come every day. We became friends starting from that minute, to 2 minutes. Later, we dated at least an hour a day. (We get to see a few clocks before and after the scene. The earlier times we see clocks that may give the time before or at 3pm, and once 4pm, but other times after this they give different times, as if that one minute will never return.)
==========
Yuddy’s voiceover mentions the bird : “I heard that there is a kind of bird with no legs. It could fly and fly only. When it got tired, it slept in the wind. This kind of bird could land only once. That was the time it died.” After this we get the Yuddy dance.
===========
In YAMS DJ had referred to the legless bird and said she had legs now. Then we have this conversation referencing the Mambo dance. It was as if she had gained legs in order to dance with Ju.
Ju : “I didn’t know Leslie Cheung was your first love. ”
DJ : “Yes, and he’ll always be my crush.”
Ju : “I’m just Mr Ju to you, but he’s your Oppa/crush.”
DJ : “Of course.”
Ju : “And he’ll always be your crush.”
DJ : “No matter how old I become he’ll always stay the same. He’ll always be wearing his white tank top and dancing in front of the mirror.” (Sadly, this reminds us that Leslie Cheung died and so in a sense, this picture of him has to remain the same.)
Ju : “I see. So that’s what you like. I should dress like him next time.”
DJ : “Seriously?”
Ju : “Why not? I even rode a bus in a wig and a mourning dress. But you have to stick by my side at all times. Can you do that?”
DJ : “I’d love to.” (The counter-reference here is that Yuddy himself never stayed by the side of any woman. We know from hindsight that DJ remained constant but Ju decided to breakup.)
Ju : “I’m going to dance too.”
DJ : “You’d better keep your word.”
Ju : “You should dress up as my first love as well.” (Ironically she was his first love, but neither of them knew it yet.)
DJ : “Deal. I just need to carry a lollipop, right?”
Ju : “That’s not fair.”
DJ starts to sing out the Mambo melody and as in the Days of Being Wild, Ju starts to make the Yuddy dance moves.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UIT3j8wfJTLV2NSZ2byhM7IU2rUEirhk/view?usp=sharing
Here’s the comparison screenshots of Ju/DJ and Yuddy dancing. Besides the dance moves, the way they carried their heads held similarities. I felt that even the framing of Ju, and the grid pattern of Yuddy’s curtains and that of the steel structure around DJ and Ju were supposed to be reminiscent of each other.

@Packmule3, tomorrow and Tuesday will be our last episodes of YAMS. Here are some cookies to bribe you to open a thread for Episodes 15 & 16. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪Kamsahamnida!
@GB, thanks for the write up on Days of Being Wild. I have never watched any of WKW’s movies because they are art films and I probably won’t be able to understand them haha but I recently watched In the Mood for Love (ITMFL) after @Janey mentioned it. The climbing up and down the stairs too appeared in ITMFL and similarly there are many voice over by the actors. YAMS too use a fair bit of voice overs by the actors.
