Bitch Talk: Sat 8/21 Open Thread

This has been a depressing, stressing, distressing week for me…and I’m not talking about kdramas.

I’m opening a thread just for fun to catch up with what’s going on in everybody’s lives nowadays. Please no political and legal debate here or I’ll zap you.

I M Warning You GIFs | Tenor

Gossips are allowed. I like gossips! They’re so entertaining.

Feel free to brag or complain about your kids and hubby or anything about yourself. Here’s mine: Last night, I had a freaky nightmare that a new wrinkle appeared right in the middle of my forehead. The wrinkle looked like an emoticon.

This one.

I kid you not. I was so freaked out that I made myself tea to get back to sleep.

Share a recipe. I miss our “Whatcha Cooking” Threads. BTW, how many times do you rinse your rice? I was told I should wash it until the water is clear. What does “clear” water mean? After 3 rinses, the water was still milky white. Isn’t there a YT video on how to wash rice??

Pictures of dogs and cats are allowed. @nrllee, what happened to your runt chick? Did you eat it already?

Birth announcements. Wedding announcements. Trips announcements. Here’s mine —

When traveling to Asia isn’t a hassle anymore, this island resort is on my to-do list. It’s in the Philippines. (Siargow Island?) I don’t know much about the service and accommodations; I’m sure they’re great. But I like the pointy tips of the huts in the middle of all those leafy coconut trees.

  1. @GB, I’m reposting your comment here about the Rewatch. — pm3

Are there any more recommendations on what to do for our next rewatch?

I was wondering if we should allow ourselves to vote for more than 1 show and to give our votes weightage like 3 for ‘really want to watch’ and 1 for ‘don’t mind watching’, but perhaps I’m just complicating things that way.

Hmmm…Should we just have 1 vote each or votes with a weightage???

Suggestions so far for a Saturday Watch or ReWatch
    4 shows in alphabetical order:

Caution: Hazardous Housewife (recommended by Welmaris)
This is on Viki. It’s a Jdorama from 2017 that’s 10 episodes long, each a bit less than one hour. It has humor, but also tackles issues such as domestic abuse, bullying, etc. I don’t want to give too much away. The female lead is trying to settle into a new, happy life but keeps having to secretly use the talents of her old life for the benefit of her new neighbors. I like the way this show depicts friendships between women. Maybe we could try an episode or to as a Saturday watch party then decide if we want to continue?

I read the synopsis and it sounds like fun. It’s a short series, which is always a good thing when I’m feeling the time crunch.

Days of Being Wild (recommended by Janey)
This is a 1990 Hong Kong Movie with the dance moves that we saw our Ju Young Do emulate in YAMS.

Why I don’t mind watching… it’s just 1 hour 34 minutes and it will make a change from the usual fare for me.

    Goblin (recommended by Cleo)
Also known as Dokkaebi or Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. This is a Kim Eun Sook, 16-episode kdrama with Gong Yoo, Kim Go Eun, Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na. It is beautiful to behold and has all the kdrama ingredients of being funny, warm, suspenseful, angsty with healing. The ending is not liked by some. I thought it was ‘logical’ for this kdrama universe.

I don’t mind watching it again for the character interactions and the supernatural. This was the show that introduced more Korean beliefs and myths to me. I actually liked the main pairing more than I cared for the 2nd leads.

My Love (2021) (recommended by GB
This is a Chinese Movie, and another adaptation of ‘On Your Wedding Day’. It is a bitter-sweet romance and relatable.

I watched it because I read a rave review of this by @kfangurl (https://thefangirlverdict.com/2021/08/08/flash-review-my-love-china-movie/). I tried it, and didn’t regret it at all. The other great reason to watch is for Greg Hsu (Someday or One Day). 🙂

  2. I miss traveling out so much!!! 😭😭😭 I wanna go road trip again at another states in Korea. So many beautiful rural areas to be explored. When can I do that? *sigh*

About washing rice, yes you need to rinse until water is clear, meaning no murky white … just clear… not necessarily three times.. I did it many times until the water is clear. 😁

I have successfully and unintentionally grown a few tumeric plants 😅😅😅 actually bought the fresh tumerics for cooking but did not use them until they sprouted on their own. 😅

Which reminds me that I forgot to water them today😂😂😂😂

  3. Well…here’s my funny story

    (Wee hours of the morning).
Hubby – why did you wake me?
Me – huh? (Still half asleep). I did?
Hubby – I dreamt I had an illegitimate child.
Me – what? Boy or girl?
Hubby – I don’t know. You woke me up.
Me – so who’s the woman?
Hubby – I don’t know. You woke me up.
Me – so no woman? But an illegitimate child? Of an unknown gender?
    Hubby – yeah.

    😂😂😂 scandalous. Dispatch worthy?

  4. O…runt chick Ugly? Turned out to be a boy. So he went back to live with the breeder.

    Birth story
KyungSue hatched me some quail chicks. Shh…don’t tell them they were adopted. Can’t afford therapy. 😂😂

  5. I hear you, @miracle23. I watched (meaning skimmed) the variety show “2 Days, 1 Night” when I want to see the rural areas in South Korea. Their last two shows was filmed in the country; the theme was “summer days at Grandma’s house.” Also, the “Racket Boys” is a good drama if you want your rural drama fix.

I like the rural areas in Asian countries. Many of them are rough and rugged, and they appeal to my sense of adventure. Sometimes I just want to get away from “civilization.” That said, I still like going to places where English, even just a little bit of English, is spoken. That’s why I thought of the Philippines. I’m comfortable mixing with the people there, even in the remote areas. I don’t think I told you that on one my trips there, I had asked my driver (or “bodyguard” lol) to just take me out of Manila for a day because I needed a break. And he brought me to this snorkeling hut about an hour’s drive away. It was a simple operation — nothing fancy — but it was simply divine. Like straight out of the travel magazine. I had the whole beach to myself, and a full body massage from an old lady. (And she just charged me like $10 or a fraction of the cost of a massage here in the US. I thought I heard her wrong!)

And the food! Just for me and the driver, they cooked up a storm. Grilled fish, chicken in some spicy sauce, pork barbecue, and bone soup. And I still recall the exotic fruit that they served me although I can’t remember its name. But it was red and prickly. The outside was all thorny so they peeled it for me. Really. The service was more than I would expect from a “Four Seasons” hotel and the attention was so personal.

Looking back, I should have written an article for the “Travel and Leisure” magazine. But I was stuck to writing the usual business trip reports. lol.

  6. Hahaha. @nrllee. You went straight at the heart of the matter. “Who’s the woman?!!”

Who cares if the child is illegitimate or not. The identity of the mother is the critical part.

  7. Quail chicks?? Huh? What do you mean? You just plopped a quail egg under her?!

What a fine tuft of hair that mommy hen has! Reminds me of the mushroom cloud/bouffant hairdo that Southern women used to wear to go to church. hahaha.

    Hi @pkml3 and Everyone,

Thanks @pkml3 for re-posting the Rewatch options for voting here. We welcome one and all to join us in suggesting shows to rewatch/watch and to vote for what to watch first.

I’m actually watching Days of Being Wild now, to comfort myself that there’s no rewatch tonight. There are more than a couple of meta or partly copied ideas from this Hong Kong movie that shows up in You Are My Spring.

    It’s fun spotting them!

As to what’s happening with me… I’m preparing for a retreat with children in 2 week’s time and for another one after that, but that’s for adult formation at the end of the month. So I’m pretty busy, on top of normal work. Oh … suddenly I find that after having to work from home for months now, and hardly driving… I have to drive practically everyday so that my kids can get to ‘school’ without the risk of getting quarantined 🙂 No, I’m not scared of the infection but of the quarantine, if they happen to be in public transport near an infected person. One more family member to go, to get the vaccination.

    ==============

I feel you @Miracle. I’d like to travel again … anywhere!!! My youngest misses flying. She missed her chance to have a little convocation and then missed her grad trip because of the pandemic.

    ===============
    Recipe?
My suggestion for easy to make comfort food in times of stress. A simple soup that I suddenly decided to make today.

    Egg-drop Enoki Mushroom Soup

1)Make or get your fave clear broth (my kids like chicken broth)
2)Wash the enoki mushrooms and separate them
3)Cut up/slice thinly any veg or other mushrooms that you’d like to add (carrots, shiitake)
4)Beat an egg or 2 depending on how much soup you make. I find 1 egg enough for soup for 3 pax.
5)Optional: add crab meat that’s been shredded
6)Butter and flour, or cornstarch to thicken the soup
7)Salt, pepper and any preferred seasonings/spices

1)Add enoki mushrooms, and any other veg or mushrooms to broth that’s on the boil.
    2)Set soup to simmer.
3)While stirring the soup slowly, pour egg bit by bit into the pot.
4)Add in crab meat if any.
    5)Season according to taste.
6)Thicken soup with butter-flour paste or with cornstarch.
7)After a final quick boil, remove from heat and serve.

    Read ya all again!

  9. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL @nrllee … I think you didn’t wake your husband up. He probably woke up on his own and woke you out of guilt LOL.

@pkml3 The fruit sounds like rambutan.

  10. Because it’s not easy to leave the country, we drove from the south of England to Scotland. I surreptitiously looked for both Nessie and Jamie, but no luck.

My younger daughter had to negotiate her exam results while on a B road in the highlands. At the prescribed time, we pulled into a parking lot and she had to run around to get a good signal on her phone. She had to stand under an umbrella on a little hillock but it was worthwhile. She’s into 6th Form in September in courses she likes.

    @packmule3, that looks idyllic!

@nrllee, ‘Who’s the woman?’ Straight to the heart of the matter. 🤣

  11. You’re right! It’s rambutan. For some reason, I keep thinking of it as “lychee” but I know it isn’t a lychee because of the prickly hair.

    Thanks!

  12. Yes, I love being with too! Thanks for the tip @packmule3. 😘 No kdrama for the time being.😅 HP is the only one I will endure at the moment. 🤣🤣🤣

I usually pack my bags and just shoot to those places I put in my itinerary. The first thing I do after landing at Incheon is to straight away go to the designated town, drop my bags at the accom and walk around the town. I prefer to venture out on my own. In recent years, my usual spot is the mountain areas for hiking. It was fun getting lost by myself and mingle with the elders there for some chit chat and help on directions😅 I usually cook on my own most days, when I travel. The crazy thing I did is buy a few kitchenware at Daiso (really cheap) and use them during trips 🤣🤣🤣. Korea is my regular annual gateaway cos I feel safe travel alone, love the environment and it’s nearer to my home country. Hope to return to Scotland in the future but I don’t know if the day will come for that.🤧

Have anyone had any experience with frozen shoulder? I am currently experienced it. Second time. Late 2019 was on left shoulder. It got better on its own… now is the right side. Much worse. Giving me so much stress😂

  13. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Miracle, I just got over frozen shoulder a few weeks back. Had to keep carefully exercising it past the painful part and it got unfrozen faster. Such a hassle just getting dressed etc!

  14. Howdy everyone! 👋🏻

According to google, rambutan is related to lychees so it’s in the family. ☺️

I’m glad you’re able to have a divine experience in Manila in one of your trips. That Siargao Island looks amazing and looks like it’s a must to visit. I hope you’ll be able to.

I haven’t got any news except we’re still in lockdown until end of September. The boys and I walked today and was able to have a gelato. 🤫 I had pork belly crackling roll, that was divine. 😋

Gossip, I don’t have much except Zhao Lusi’s currently filming drama has 60 episodes. 😳 I know! But I’m going to watch it because I don’t mind the ML there.

@nrllee, always good to hear it from the source. 😂

    @Fern, how’s the cake going? 😜

@miracle23, sounds really painful, your frozen shoulder. I’ll pray you’ll be able to find help for it. I bet HP2 doesn’t help too. 😆

@GB, thanks for the mushroom recipe. I’m definitely going to make it. ☺️

  15. Thank you for the tips @GB. I just do some massage and light stretching to reduce the muscle spasm when it happens. Even lying down is painful and I have to put my arm on pillow 😭😭😭 ..

@agdr, thanks! yeah HP2 didn’t help much 🤣🤣🤣 giving me more headaches instead. 🤭🤭🤭

  16. This was a week I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time and I’m a bit down that it ended up being so depressing.

I find myself constantly thinking about the Afghanistan situation.

Happenings: My older daughter returned to in person school this week. We recently received a dyslexia diagnosis- which helps explain why at home learning was such a dumpster fire for us. Instead of being thrilled about school, though, everything feels up in the air with so many pediatric covid cases on the rise in our area.
I returned to the workforce for the first time since having my younger daughter. It was exhilarating putting on my professional persona again except again, my work has high risk of covid contraction. I’m very thankful for the vaccination I was able to receive.
Eating: I received a shipment of Korean snacks from Amazon and that’s been a highlight of my week. I live in a very rural area with little access to “ethnic” foods —I’ve read in our news that having an ethnic aisles in our American grocery stores will now be a thing of the past.
My husband grilled a ton of different meats for supper last night so I felt very carnivorous. I was disappointed I didn’t have any lettuce to make wraps.
Watching: You are my Glory has been a happy pill. I’ve also watched all available episodes of the Cdramas Crush and Our Secret.
I pressed pause on You are my Spring. It’s such a great show and I want to have the right mindset to properly take it in.
Last night I binged the first 7 episodes of Uncontrollably Fond. It feels very retro but I’m enjoying it. I’m waiting to start On the Verge of Insanity once all the episodes have been released. Thinking of starting Police Academy.

Praying for all of those with heavy hearts

  17. Oh one more thing celebrity gossip wise-
I watched happy camp variety show with Yang Yang and Dilraba and I was struck with how thin she was. I’m a small person and I don’t mind a skinny aesthetic but she was borderline skeletal. I read one of the YouTube comments that she’s filming a movie or drama where she’s poisoned so she’s lost a lot of weight for the role. Hopefully she won’t have to lose much more.

  18. Hello to everyone, and how nice to have a simple catch-up with a more personal focus.

Thank you for the lovely suggestions for shared watching. I’ll be very happy to go through “Racket Boys” and “Goblin” again, and I’m happy to realise that @packmule3 and I seem to have similar opinions concerning the ending of “Goblin”. I’m just coming to the finale of “Devil Judge” this weekend, and although we’ve seen fourteen of the sixteen episodes, the denouement is still obscure.

I resisted the opportunity to vote for “Vincenzo” in the 16th Seoul International Drama Awards because I didn’t want to download the voting app onto my mobile phone, coincidentally linking my online account with yet another set of data vultures. Still, SJK and “Vincenzo” earned top spots in the 2021 Brand of the Year Awards without my help.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; God got it wrong. Instead of being able to decline gracefully and comfortably into my sunset years I’m spending an increasing amount of time carrying my body around to different scanning and screening centres. Lately I’ve become far too familiar with a local physiotherapy department which is dealing with the insurgence of lymphoedema in my lower limbs, and afterwards there’s another issue waiting to receive attention. But before that, I think a short holiday is on the cards – to our south coast perhaps, although it could be north to the Kimberley region. Decisions still have to be made. No travelling outside the State, though. We’re living an almost normal life in Western Australia, due to our reluctant willingness to put up with inconvenience, the character of our economy, the small size of our population, and our rock-crunching State premier, who closes our borders at the drop of a hat.

My cooking activities: because it’s still Winter/moving into Spring here, I’m regularly producing two jam pans full of minestrone soup and distributing them around our five family houses. But I must admit that over the years I have stopped adding the pasta, so I suppose it could be described more as a super vegetable soup, just made for a crusty bread roll or two. It tastes alright, though.

Finally, thank goodness for Kdrama I say. I’m not sure where I’ll go next. I became tired of “You are my Spring”; the pace was just too slow, so I’ll have to start casting around for something else. Looking to the Western genres, I’m quite eagerly anticipating “Foundation” in a month’s time, although I’ll have to take out a subscription to Apple TV for that, which I resent, but I simply have to see how the series stands up to Asimov’s sci-fi masterpiece novels.

That’ll do for now. To all my BOD colleagues – ave et vale.

  19. Sorry. One my random thing. I just googled the rambutan—now I want a big bowl of fruit. I’ve been curious about the durian since I saw it in a (terrible) cdrama I watched. It was also recently in an episode of running man.

  20. And another thing 😜,
I’ve no problem with may December romances. I’m actually fond of them if they’re done right. As PM3 pointed out, the emotional maturity has more importance than actual number of years lived. Anyway, I watched the Japanese May December and felt very meh about it. I loved Goblin. Recently I binged mr sunshine. I really fell in love with the female lead actress but sheesh, the older Lee byung hun gave me the skeevies. Then I looked up more into the actor in real life and found out about his extracurricular activities while his wife was pregnant, no wonder I got gross vibes from him.
I’m a little disappointed in myself when I admit that I greatly dislike noona romance. Is that anti-feminist of me?

  21. Dear Packmule,

I’m from Manila and the fruit you described sounds very much like rambutan, juicy and sweet and delicious! When you go back here, try the other fruits we like here, Philippine mango, lansones, mangosteen, and atis!

Hope everyone here stays safe. Can’t wait for this pandemic to end. I want to visit SK and Europe too soon.

  22. Dear Packmule,

This is very nice place to gather. Thank you. It makes me want to rant about moving.

My husband and me took a month off for moving in a smaller city. Thinking that we could finished all in two weeks, and then prosceed with administration, inscribe my daughter in a new school and spare one week to go on holiday. But no. My one month off came to an end last week, and the new place is still a mess, we are not yet finished with administration so whenever we go we still need to pay parking space, and no time for holiday. tsihhhhhh… thank God I have internet working.

Anyway, I wish everybody is in a good health.
I am speechless about what happened in Afghanistan. All I could do just pray that whoever involved in that mess over Afghanistan will have a nightmare and bad conscience.
I pray for the safety of all the children and women and innocent people out there.

Euhhh Rambutan ? I love rambutan. I ate that alot when I was posted in Indonesia. And there are some others called, salak, langsat or duku and manggis. ohhhh I missed travel.

    Have a good weekend cingus

  23. @Miracle 23, I have some exercises from a physiotherapist I can sent to you for frozen shoulder. They are in English with photos with links to video. I had it after Christmas (2nd time and on my dominant side).

*Please* could someone send @Miracle23 my email address?

What a strange thing and mostly women get it. I should statistically be too old for it. Hey-ho.

I love the sound of jetting off to Korea or the Philippines, but that is on hold for a while.

I made American-style angel food cake from scratch today – it’s not a thing here. It’s a bit of a faff if you’re not used to doing it. (@agdr03, I sent you a photo. It looks reasonable.)

@birdie007, why no foreign foods in the US supermarkets? Seems odd. We are going in the other direction, thank goodness.

@Juriel, your minestone soup sounds delicious. It’s supposed to be the height of summer here, but someone forgot. We’ve got 18 degrees, but feels chilly, dim, damp and it’s chucking it down outside.

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL @BulmaGoku, I just had some nice sweet Duku. The season is in again and we can get a lot of it, pretty inexpensively now. I don’t care for Salak but I love the Mango (Manggis). When I was in Indonesia, I was introduced to Passion Fruit and I developed a passion for them too!!

  25. Hi Dear @packmule3,
Thank you for this thread, it is so fun to read everyone’s comments 🌷
Thank God your emoticon wrinkle was just a dream. I would be shocked too if I were you.. I remembered that I’ve been starting to get diligent in my skincare routine because I had the first wrinkle on my face and my little sister told me that I look older than my actual age. Lol.

    @nrllee
Hahaha why your husband’s dream is so scandalous? It could be like a makjang drama if he could continue his dream.. (well It happened to me once, I woke up accidentally because of loud noises, still remembered my dream, tried to get back to sleep again, and the dream continued! I was surprised back then..lol)

    @GB,
Thank you for the recipe!! I wanna try that too. Maybe sometime in next week.. I’m curious about your reviews adter watching Days of Being Wild.. I hope you can share with us maybe in the YAMS thread? Hehe
    🍀🍀🍀

    @Miracle23
I’m sorry to hear that you suffered with frozen shoulder. My mom recently had to go to physiotherapist several times to treat her frozen shoulders. I had to help her to wear her bras and clothes that need to be zipped in the back side. It was really painful for her, so I can Imagine..
My yoga teacher once give me the video links to exercise the shoulder and arms so that we could prevent ourselves from frozen shoulder. I told my mom to do that exercise too after she felt less painful on her shoulders. Do you like to practice Yoga? Maybe it could help too, do it once a week after your shoulders feel better to prevent it happened again.. get well soon!!

    @birdie,
Since I watch Love O2O, I see that many Cdrama actresses are so thin.. I thought it was like the trend for them to be that thin.. 🤭
I don’t like Durian and also can’t stand their smells, but many people in my country loves them so so soo much. My friend once asked me to eat Durian in front of her because she didn’t believe that there’s anyone who doesn’t like that fruit. I ate them and I puked adterwards. Still has the trauma until now. Lol. However, if Durians are processed into Ice Cream, I still can tolerate to eat them. Haha
P.S: if you like Kim Taeri in Mr Sunshine (I like her too btw!!!) don’t forget to watch her upcoming project with Namjoohyuk (the actor who played Main Lead in Start Up) titled Twenty Five Twenty One.. will be aired probably in December 2021 or next year..

    ____

I miss traveling too.. I had to refund our tickets to S Korea last year, but sadly we can not use that refund voucher yet.. so maybe I should say goodbye to our ticket voucher now.. I just hope that this pandemic will go away soon..

For the past weeks I had to deal with my own health (both physical and mental), I suffered with Insomnia when the Covid cases was rising in my country, too many people passed away.. but Thank God that now our condition is better.. as for my physical condition, I am now trying to be more active, I just tried to join virtual class for LIIT and I felt like I wanna die.. lol.. I really need to improve my stamina 😓😓

As for drama: Aside from YAMS and HP, I recently watched Japanese dorama that available in my netflix, I watched Kotaro Lives Alone and I enjoyed it. I remembered my interest in watching dramas started since I watched Japanese dorama back then.. therefore watching them feels nostalgic for me. Because in my opinion, their cinematography, setting, and costumes in the doramas that made in 1995 and 2020 relatively looks the same for me.
If there’s anyone who interested to watch Jdorama, I recommend my all time favorite: Long Vacation and Beach Boys.

Sending virtual hugs for you all..
    Take care 🙏🏻🙏🏻

  26. Thanks for sharing and opening this thread @PM3! I love the Philippines because it’s my home country and I’m happy to read that you had a great experience there. We were supposed to visit in 2020 (with a planned side trip to SK!) but cannot until now due to pandemic and community quarantines. I have not been to Siargao but it’s on my list of places to go to. BTW, we get fresh rambutan at our asian store here and we buy it even if the price is ridiculously expensive ($7 for 12 pieces!) – just for the sweet taste of it!

Glad to hear what everyone is up to!

I did not know that frozen shoulder is common in women. I got this also several years ago and had to go to physical therapy. Just putting a bra on is a pain. I remind myself to stretch often as my shoulders bear the brunt of my stress. I hope you feel better soon @Miracle.

Work has been crazy and stressful! The pandemic has wreaked havoc not only on lives but in industries. There’s supply shortage everywhere. I usually thrive during crisis mode but a continuous crisis is just so draining. But I’m very grateful to have a job and can work remotely during these times. I’ve been itching for a trip or getaway hopefully soon… the California “fire season” is not making it easy though (so sad we have this as a season now). The Cali countryside is burning. 🙏🙏🙏

With school starting, I’m getting behind on watching kdramas – have to role model not watching TV after dinner to the kiddos! LOL! Weekend catch up it is! YAMG is my happy pill and patiently waiting for the last 2 episodes’ English subs. YAMS is my psychological grounding also on its last episodes next week. Will start Racket Boys after.

HPL2 has lost its edge story wise and more like a hodgepodge of stuff (sarcasm here). The exchanges in BOD is more engaging than the show. Thank you all for that!

  27. @birdie I love durian too. But My husband got sick the first time we tried. Whenever I am in Asia, Thailand or Indonesia, I would go straight to find durian :-D. Here where I live, we could get frozen one, but not as good as the one opened in front of us by the sellers like in Thai or Indonesia.

@GB, lucky you. It’s been yearsss I don’t eat duku. Somehow, whenever I was around Indonesia, it was not duku’s season. But yes, passion fruit. IIRC called markisa in bahasa. I went to South Sulwaesi in a highland where passion fruit grow abundantly. They had all kinds of drinks and cakes and pudings from that sole fruit.
That egg drop enoki mushrooms soup looks doable to me. Noted !

@Miracle23, I hope your frozen shoulder get better soon. I’ve never experience it but My husband did, during our holiday in an island on Christmas evening :-D. He took Ibuprofen, once every 3 or 4 hours. And then after we came back, he took a kinetheraphy.

@nrllee, that’s a funny story. I will tell it to my husband 😀

Unfortunately, I don’t have much to tell about kdrama. My own policy is one kdrama at a time + one or two other series.

So now, i am in HP2 + Snowpiercer and The Bridge (Original Sweden one). After that, I was thinking to watch Prison Playbook + maybe Money Heist.

Virtual big hugs to all of you.
    Stay safe, stay healthy xoxoxo

  28. Prayers for Afghanistan.

    my workweek – “zoom fatigue”.

@annne – oh man, atis. haven’t eaten atis in a long, long while. i love rambutan too. I grew up eating lumboy (duhat in Tagalog, Java plum in English).

i went to my first concert of 2021 (and perhaps my last … lol, though i have a few more but if they get cancelled, i’ll understand). before heading out to the venue, we walked around in this outdoor shopping mall to soaked in much needed Vitamin D. we got to the venue an hour early so we were able to grab primo spot in the pit. it was fun, no pushing, no cussing, but very nerve wracking.

kdramas: I DNFed Monthly Magazine Home. Looking forward to Hometown Chachahca 🙂

  29. I just finish watching nevertheless, they are finally in relationship with ? “Question mark”🤣
But im happy for them. At least its not open ending..

@pm3 u can eat alot rambutan from November till February in indonesia. The popular one is called rambutan binjae
At my parent village u can eat it for free 🤣
    I love rambutan so much.

And i recommend everyone here, who’s accidentally reading my comment to watch “you are my glory” cdrama 😝
You wont regret it, bcs this drama were so good🥰
    This drama have:
    1. Gorgeous main couple (i meant their visual no jokes)
    2. The story written in very romantic way.
    3. Glory couple has a good chemistry.
    4. My first and my no 1 favorite cdrama 👍🏻

YAMG is way better than stick to our frustration with HP2 lol

  30. @Lovebangwon and all others who have mentioned it, I am with you for “You Are My Glory.” A good story – no unnecessary melodramatic nonsense. Well written and directed, too.

I shall have to try to find some rambutan. I’ve seen it, but it would be so far from fresh by the time it got to the shelves here in the hinterlands… How do you know if it’s ripe and ready to eat? I now wish I had some to eat tonight – it’s my older daughter’s birthday.

  31. I searched duku and it’s lansones in Filipino! It is also my favorite and something that I miss so much.

For food, we got a raclette grill which we are enjoying so much. Cheese on meat is such a treat! We marinate meat in many ways (korean bbq style, American steak, Filipino bbq), going fusion vs the traditional raclette fare. And we use a variety of cheeses, too. The kids love it melted over corn kernels. Of course, we eat these with rice.

Thanks @Gb for your soup suggestion! Sounds simple and good. Will do this when we get enoki mushrooms from the grocery.

  32. @birdie007, I noticed that about Dilaraba too…her arms are so thin!! Not sure if that is why her dresses are so puffy to make her look chubbier?

I love durians!! The season is almost over and can be quite expensive as it is a premium kind of fruit. 2 durians is about USD$35. I have to say this fruit is not one of an acquired taste, it is either you like it or not…like cilantro? Also, too heaty to eat too much of it so it is always paired with mangosteen or a cooling drink to balance out. U got me tempted but I need some company to eat it with and hubby is on diet. 😅

Meanwhile I miss travelling too. the year covid started I was planning on two trips with friends, one of which was to S.Korea or Japan 😭 sans kids! My country is too small to travel within..so most people contend with staycations. I’m back to being busy with safe distancing measures relaxed and kids classes go back to on-site.

I am stuck with YAMG and rewatching it while reading the novel. Just finished Monthly Magazine House which was super hilarious for me despite the noble idiocy.

  33. @pm3, i reread your post again and remembered this.
the purpose of washing rice is to remove the starch on the grain. Not washing makes the rice stick together due to the sticky starch on the surface of the grain and the inside of the rice grain may not cook completely. Usually 3 times is good enough or they say till the water is clear. Ideally a good cooked rice should have grains that are distinctive from each other, fluffy but not sticky.
Take it a step further, soak the rice for about half hour before cooking it.

Probably gotta experiment a bit. Feels like making bread and getting a feel of the dough, a good bowl rice is in the quality and the preparation.

  34. @Birdie007, you may want to rethink trying durian, at least not as fresh fruit. I’ve heard it tastes delicious, but smells terrible. When I visited Kuala Lumpur a few years back, the entrances to the subways had prominent signs saying No Durian! But I did develop a fondness for durian-flavored ice cream.

I live a few-minutes’ drive from the original Disneyland in California, but haven’t gone there in many years. Additionally, because of COVID, it was shut for more than a year; it is now open with reduced numbers of guests allowed in each day. My older daughter works at Disneyland, one of the first wave of Cast Members called back when the park reopened. She texted me this past Wednesday offering two complimentary tickets. I was able to get entry reservations for the next day, so a friend and I went on Thursday. We spent a lot of our time exploring the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme area. I loved the attention to detail and how immersive it is. Walking around felt like being inside a Star Wars movie, “long ago and in a galaxy far away.” So you could say I got to enjoy a day of intergalactic travel. To add to the blessings of the day, I took my daughter out to dinner after she got off work.

I am saddened by what is happening in Afghanistan. I was not joking when I commented to my husband yesterday that the USA should have been training and equipping the women of that nation for its defense, since they’re the ones who have the most to lose under Taliban control.

My younger daughter, who lives in Seattle, will be working with Afghan refugees relocated to that city.

I have been struggling with the sight in my left eye since having cataract surgery in June. My right eye, which was done in May, had an easy recovery. For weeks after my left eye surgery, I suffered high pressure in my eye which was painful and caused blurring of my vision. To control the intraocular pressure and corneal edema, I had to use drops that stung a lot. I’m now at the point where my eye pressure has been testing normal, and I no longer need to use those drops, but my body–not liking the foreign object in my left eye–grew a film of tissue over the new lens. I have a big blob in the center of my visual field. Two weeks ago it was zapped with laser and its size cut by half. I’m hoping when I go back to the ophthalmologist next Wednesday the remaining blob will be zapped out of existance.

Despite visual challenges, I’m watching HP2, YAMS, YAMG, and Racket Boys.

  35. @moonstar512 😂😂 I actually did follow up with, “quick, get back to sleep and head back into that dream. I need details – find out who’s the woman and child.” But he told me it doesn’t work like that for him. My hubby has weird dreams. He often has dreams/nightmares of being eaten? I don’t think I have ever had such a dream. Chases yes but not eaten? 😂🤔. I told him it’s probably because of his penchant for watching Zombie movies/dramas. Last night he decided to watch Kingdom 🙄.

  36. Kalispera my Ladies!

@Packmule3, I am glad you made this thread! It is good to see many known faces around here!
I need to reread your comments in order to answer to all of you, so first are my news!

What can I say? I am trying to move into a new apartment, but is dragging at the moment. Because it is August, I have to wait to find a someone to bring in my bed and some other furniture.
So, I am wondering should I do it myself? I am trying to get an electric screwdriver and try to dismantle it first and then assembly it! Wish me luck ladies!

In case some of you are worried, I am okay. We weren’t in actual danger, but still with all these wildfires, we are all heartbroken. Many things are happening in the world, that keep you worried – yes, I mean Afganistan.

I want to travel abroad too, but as it seems, we cannot do that for the time being. We were in quarantine for so long, that it seems huge to be able to go somewhere else than you house.
I am still worried though, about Delta variant and even though, I found some time to relax at my friend’s beach house, we were mostly inside, except from when we went to the beach.

At that time, we watched “Faith: The Great Doctor” that I really enjoyed. It was her first K-Drama and I have left her with homework.
She need to watch “The King: Eternal Monarch.” – LMAO!
She liked Lee Min Ho obviously…

Have I told you that my solace is Music? I heard a lot of it. It kept my sanity and kept my feelings at bay. These days I am listening several pieces from K-Dramas OST, like Onew’s – You are my Spring or music from the 80’s, the 90’s and greek songs from several ages.

I also took many photographs. I like landscapes better, but I am pretty good at taking portraits.
I think that you need to have aesthetics, in order with one shot to freeze the present time.
As I have told my friend, I have to think seriously to do a photography seminar in the future. We shall see…

I will try to answer to all of you, If I forget anyone I will return with a new comment!

It is good to know that you are okay, even though you are having weird dreams, @packmule3 & @nrllee I’m looking at you.

Thank you for the recipe @GB, I need to try this! As for the retreats you can do this! Hwaiting! <3

@Miracle23 you need to do some physio as @Fern noted. I was given exercises for my neck and it has helped me a lot!

@Agdr03 eating gelato is an heavenly experience altogether! I love gelato in summertime!

@birdie007 I am praying with you!

@BulmaGoku you can rant as you want about moving! I can relate although, for me it is not in another city.

@Janey I do hope that you won't be that stressful. YAMS is / was a lovely journey? It gave us healing as well!

@hakutsi I am waiting for Hometown Cha Cha Cha as well!

@Lovebangwon Don't give us spoiler on Nevertheless! I have stayed behind! I just wish that these youngsters should heal first and then try to have a meaningful relationship, not necessarily between them.

I am listening to all of you talking about "You are my Glory", I have to see If I can watched it. I have to add it to my (endless) list!

Also, don't talk about fruits I cannot consume over here. The only thing I want right now is watermelon. If you ever come to Greece you can eat watermelon – if you can consume milk or cheese – with some Feta too, as a salad! *winks*

@Welmaris, I didn't know that you cataract surgery had such implications! My father did one too in May and the doctors were afraid beforehand about implications, but it didn't happen.
I was pretty stressed about it and I am grateful. I wish you speedy recovery and hopefully your ophthalmologist will give you the news you are wishing to hear!

I think I answered to ya all! Kalinixta…

  37. @Cleopatra, we can’t get good watermelon here. It’s picked too early in the warmer countries and it’s never properly ripe when it arrives in our shops. I had some amazing watermelon in Malta. I imagine yours is like that, sweet and really aromatic.

@nrllee, if I have a bad dream, I can’t seem to shake it off and it repeats and repeats. It’s one reason I don’t watch scary films. My husband and older daughter are watching an American Zombie drama at the rate of 2 episodes each night. I just can’t. Not only would the munching get to me, I’d also pick up a southern sort of drawl which would make the locals stare… Does anyone else have that problem of hear the accent — speak it (sort of). It’s almost like a tic. Quite embarrassing.

  38. @Fern you and me both. I kept my eyes firmly on my iPad and tried to block out the blood curdling screams. 😂

@packmule3 one of my chickens KyungSue went broody. So I decided to let her hatch some chicks. I didn’t want any more chickens so I decided to try quail. I can keep quail roosters in my suburban block because their crows sound much like a wild bird so my neighbors wouldn’t go around complaining about noise. And the hens are also quieter than chickens. She did a good job for the most part. I will have to tweak the system again if she goes broody again.

  39. Hi @packmule3 this is a very lovely thread. Something different from the kdrama discussions and one of the reasons I love the community we have in this blog. It’s like catching up with long lost friends. That’s how I feel although I’m very much new to the blog. 🤣

The past 3 weeks have been hectic with work with very long hours, even on weekends. This weekend my husband and I were looking for properties near the city, but it’s a seller’s market at the moment here and prices are crazy insane!
The weather is good (tail end of winter) so such a good day to be out for a picnic with kiddos!

@agdr03 are you from Sydney by any chance? If you do, sending you virtual hug. Being in lockdown for how many months now would be a challenging situation. The protests yesterday doesn’t help the situation either! I’m in Brisbane and if you ever find yourself in our side of state after this lockdown, let me know and we can show you around (only if you’re up for it of course!).

@packmule3 I’m glad you enjoyed the Philippines. I wanted to go back home when my mum passed away just this June but couldn’t because of international travel restrictions. Siargao and Batanes is in my bucket list when I come home as well. Coron Palawan is quite lovely too, with their hiking and lakes if that’s something anybody is interested in.

The whole family back in the Philippines is addicted to kdramas (different genres) so much so that my mum planned to go to Korea to fully immerse with their culture. Haha! We were gonna go supposedly last year April.  All 6 siblings promised her and dad that we will ‘honour’ her wishes once the lockdown eases worldwide. I am so looking forward to that! 🥰 I even got my youngest a passport. The guy at the post office quite looked at us weirdly.. we must be the only one applying passport when our borders are shut!

I haven’t really caught up with HP since the last 2 episodes. I struggled watching the episode about mums as it brought me back so many good memories of mum that I just turned into a crying mess.

@GB thanks for the recipe, my eldest loves egg drop soup. I have sent the recipe to my husband to try! He’s the better cook between the 2 of us and I find the kids eat what he cooks than if I did.🤣😅 The sad truth – kids don’t lie!

@miracle23 sorry to hear about your frozen shoulder, I hope with exercise and enough rest you will get immediate relief!

@birdie007 now you make me crave Korean snacks too! Time to go to an Asian shop soon! Haha.

@welmaris @ birdie007 @bulmagoku I think eating durian is an acquired taste. It’s either you like it (terrible smell and all) or not! When I lived in Singapore years back, there was only one type of durian I can stomach only because it’s on the sweeter side than bitter. I can’t recall the name now!

@cleopatra I hope you get the rest of moving sorted. You got this! 💪!

I hope everybody is keeping safe and are mentally coping with all that is happening around you. Praying for everybody’s safety and peace of mind ❤

  40. @packmule3, I’ve never been to Siargao, but have also been wanting to visit! My favorite Philippine beaches are Boracay and Palawan, but I heard Siargao is even better in that it is more rural, less toursity/commercialized. 🙂

I miss travelling, too! Last year, I was supposed to go to Japan with friends from grad school, and I was also supposed to bring my mom for the first time to Thailand. (I feel she would LOVE Bangkok!) Sigh. Oh well.

@GB — thank you for the recipe! Will try that one of these days. Your and @Juriel’s soups seem so comforting and delicious, I’m craving soup now. 😂

Actually, I’m craving fruits, too, with everyone talking about fruits! 😂 But I think I just have bananas in my kitchen. 🤦‍♀️

@Miracle23, I’ve never heard of “frozen shoulder” until now. And it’s common to women? Yikes. 👀 I hope you get to find the remedy/exercise for it and feel better soon!

@birdie007, ooh Korean snacks! Which ones did you get and like? My Korean grocery shopping in the past was always boring. I would just get “common” of snacks — the usual ice cream, choco pie, and flavored almonds — so I’m thinking I should be more adventurous. 😈😂😂😂 Also, please take extra care now that you’re physically reporting back to work! 🙂

@moonstar512, I’ve been trying to exercise more often now, too! This pandemic has also been mentally tolling on me. Elle Woods was right that endorphins make one happy. 😂 Happy enough to make one forget the suffering one went through _during_ the exercise. LOL.

@Fern, your angel food cake sounds lovely. Happy birthday to your older daughter!

@nrllee, I agree with @GB — I also think you didn’t wake your husband up; he woke you up because felt guilty. LOL.

  41. @pandamilktea 😂😂. He couldn’t tell me HOW he found out he had an illegitimate child? I mean, did the child show up at our door step? He said no. So I asked how in the world he knew he had one in the first place? Who was the source of that info? He couldn’t tell me that either. Kept repeating…don’t know, you woke me up. 😂😂. So yeah. Guilty conscience makes sense.

  42. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Juriel, oh Foundation!! I must catch that somehow. I feel, though, that nothing can beat the books. Just thinking about this series makes me want to go and read the books again.

@Welmaris, all the best where your eyes are concerned!

@Cleo, all the best on your move, on dismantling and assembling your bed!

@moonstar, I’m not sure how to review Days of Being Wild. But I did want to list the similarities with YAMS that I managed to note. I’ll probably link to a proper review of it as well as give my amateur opinion.

    Happy Sunday to All!

  43. Fern: yes.. esp glory couple really give us alot fan services, esp on their promotion, weibo post, bts.
They really looks so close together ❤️

Cleopatra you should come to bali at least, even im not living there. But its popular tourist place and eat rambutan 😁
watermelon has no season here, its available every year.
But i never try eating it with milk/chesse.
It must taste like fruit salad i think..

Im so frustated with nevertheless🥴i want it end as soon as possible.
That why i love the ending, like FINALLY😂

  44. Ladies, thank you for the tips. It hurts and super annoying too because sometimes the pain goes to my neck, when i feel inflammation on the nerve 😅 i hope it will get better soon. Thanks again ladies😘😘😘!

    @Fern, I will send you an email😘

@moonstar512, I am also waiting to convert my travel voucher for a new traveling date. Fortunately, the airline has extended my voucher redemption date to next year travel dates due to Covid travel restriction. Hopefully by next year we can all take that flight and travel out.

If you travel to south east asia again, try the combination of duku and langsat. The fruit is called Duku Langsat 😅… there is another version of duku called Dokong. There is also another family of rambutan with thicker skin, abd shorter thick hair called Pulasan.

As for durian, there are various types. If you visit SEA countries, try the famous Durian Kunyit, Musang King, and Duri Hitam. These are the premium type. They are different in taste, texture and color. 😅 I can only eat a bit of durian and I like them served cold. 🤭

It’s gonna be a bit relaxing week for me next … I have a few seminars to attend from tuesday to friday, online. Our head of service is thinking to allow those who have fully been vaccinated to attend work at the office. So maybe starting sometime next week I will have to start going back to my office. A bit cautious but gotta do as instructed🤧

  45. @moonstar512 I should have gone in Korea last year too >_< It would have been my second time. But everything was reimbursed, we paid only the plane tickets and the ravel agency fees. The compagny gave us back the money because the flight was cancelled and our insurance paid the agency fees. So, fortunately, we lost nothing.

We hope that it will work for the next year! But now, it doesn't look good, even vaccinated we need to quaratine.

For now, I travel in UE, this summer I was in Germany and Austria (there is a very good Korean restaurant in Salzburg :p), Turin in September and London (for Harry Potter world) in December.

  46. @Sayaris, Harry Potter World is great fun. Last week we went stopped at Alnwick castle on our way home from Scotland. It’s far, but is a very nice place for Harry Potter fans.

Some years back I had friends from Turin who took me to see some places they particularly liked. What a lovely setting and quite under-rated when I visited! I am envious. Do go up into the mountains to the north. There are some excellent restaurants in the little towns. I loved the local Gianduja chocolates and the fresh grissini, too.

  47. @Fern, It won’t be my first time in Turin. I live in Switzerland and it’s not so far by car (3 hours). I liked this city, there are less tourists than Milan so it’s nice to visit. There are a lot of arcades that protect you from the sun or the rain. I won’t go to visit the moutain villages but they have beautiful castles in the region. I already visited some of them. I mean technically I will have to traverse the Alps by using the St-Bernard Tunnel that connects Switzerland and Italy. I already visited Aoste. It’s a road that I know well because we use it everytime to go in Italy.

I’m super excited to visit Harry Potter exhibition! It’s like Disneyland, it makes me becoming a child again 😀

  48. @Sayaris, so you are spoilt for mountains, having such an abundance in your own country. No need to venture uphill from Torino.

I worked as an au pair about 1/2 way between Geneve and Lausanne. I also visited family friends in Schwyz in the central part of the country. Such good memories of your country!

  49. @pm3, thank you for starting this thread. I’m in a drama slump right now. After being disappointed with Monthly Magazine Home, and getting a little bored with HP2, I turned to some old shows. Have you watched “In Time with You” yet? Lol. I remember you had some resistance to starting the show because of the FL. This show is 10 years old now, but I always turn to it when nothing else interests me.

I’ve been watching a C-variety show: Call Me By Fire. Anyone watching it too? It’s the male version of “Sisters who Make Waves”. “Sisters who Makes Waves” S1 and S2 involve getting together a group of female artistes, all above the age of 30, in this variety show, and ultimately forming a girl group. These female artistes are all very successful in their own fields, so it was nice to watch them bond together, and move out of their comfort zone trying something they have never done before. The performances they put up were definitely very entertaining!

When it was announced that the male artiste version was going to be shown on tv, I got really excited. Many of them I’m familiar with, especially those from HK. It was so nostalgic watching them perform again, and some of them are already in their 50s! It was also interesting to see how the men bonded with one another, and so different from the women. The show is only in its second week, and already a songwriter/singer/producer had to leave the show because of a scandal. He was accused by his ex-gf of serial cheating, and photos of their conversation of him criticizing and belittling the show were also revealed. Lol, that’s all the gossip I know.

Gotta get to work! I’m enjoying reading about all of your experiences in this thread! Will come back later!

  50. Welcome to the blog @Pingpongpang and condolence on the passing of your Mom. May her soul Rest in Peace. Sending you virtual hugs back.

I am from Sydney and as much as it’s been hard I am still thankful for the blessings. I’ve been to Qld but haven’t really gone around so maybe one day we can meet up. Thank you 🙂

@Cleopatra, I had hazelnut gelato and it was heaven. I might try the Rafaello and biscoff next time. Hugs to you!

@miracle23, how is your frozen shoulder?

I will watch the dimples drama because I like Shin Minah and it’s on Netflix. 🙂

  51. Hello to everyone!
Finally my aunt is healed from her broken collarbone and no surgery necessary. She got the good news last week at her appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. Her physical therapy is going well. My mother, on the other hand, is having more issues with her back and her legs giving out. She has appointment with a specialist in September. Last week we also have some sad news as my aunt by marriage on my father’s side of the family passed away suddenly from pneumonia. There will be a memorial service for her next month.

Travel: My friend and I went to the art museum which has finally reopened after COVID. Everyone is required to wear masks inside the building. It was nice to finally be able to go someplace that wasn’t the grocery store, bank, or post office.

Gossip: Latest I heard was IKON member Bobby shocks fans with news he is getting married and baby on the way-due in September. I know IKON from watching Kingdom: Legendary War. Of course I was surprised at the news because I didn’t know he had a girlfriend. I wish him and his fiancee all the best in the world and congratulations on his marriage and parenthood! Also, I say to his fiancee I admire your courage as I think it takes a lot of courage to wed a celebrity.

Drama News: Oath of Love starring Yang Zi will premiere Sept. 8, 2021 and is liscensed to WeTV and Viki.

I’m watching C Rom Com Sweet Teeth over at IQIYI. The 2 leads are cute and I’m enjoying seeing a dentist hero.
I completed a binge watch of Korean Drama Nevertheless. it was different but I enjoyed it.

    Take care, all!

  52. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi All, I’m having cold, rainy weather and my ENT is acting up. I try not to take antihistamines, but I guess sometimes I can’t help it. I wish I could move the rain over to all those areas where the fires keep burning.

I’ve watched the final episode of Devil Judge. Would I recommend it? Well, yes if you like a good pace of a plot-driven drama, with comment on the systems that enable corruption. It’s OTT, evil is caricatured and very dramatic, there are moments of angst, suspense, catharsis, and some good plot twists.

The characters played by Ji Sung, Kim Min Jung and Jin Young carry us along quickly, and were paradoxically overly dramatic and yet believable. I did wonder if Kim’s character was borderline psychopathic, but then she was also able to empathise. Ji Sung is always charismatic and Jin Young, compelling.

In the end, while I will not choose this show for a rewatch, I’m glad to have watched it for a change of pace…… I felt that I was in a whirlwind of plot, plotting, and counter-plots that worked out to be sufficiently surprising so as to satisfy.

@moonstar, I left a comment on Days of Being Wild in the YAMS Ep 13 and 14 thread with a note on YAMS’s similarities to it.

    Cheers everyone!

  53. I hope your ENT goes away @GB. It’s raining here too, supposed to be for the whole week.

I want to watch TDJ because I like the three leads. I just couldn’t get to it earlier because I didn’t want to have a few dramas all at the same time. Thanks for this! ☺️

  54. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

My dear @agdr03, I’m delighted to know that you’ll be watching TDJ. It’s a far cry from a romance with sweet kisses… quite the opposite!! If you watch it thoroughly, I believe you’ll enjoy it anyway… in a different way.

Thanks for your care … my ENT acts up at odd times. I’ve found that I can’t take a whole tablet to keep it under control, as even a non-drowsy formula has started to make me dull and sleepy. I guess it’s age!!! I’m ok now, 30 hours after taking half a tablet. I’ll see how long I can push it, before it comes back.

  55. @Fern, I live by the Léman lake between Lausanne and Villeneuve and work in Geneva. Yes, I can see many mountains everytime! It’s funny because I didn’t visit my own country so much. I did of course but sometimes I think I know better France. Because it’s cheaper, we always went in vacation in France or in Italy when I was young. But now, I try to use my train subscription and to visit Switzerland.

  56. Wow what a nice thread you have here!

Been out of the loop and haven’t watched HP2 latest eps yet coz I recently lost a mentor due to covid and had a big event to facilitaye last weekend. But it was nice to read all the comments here. And will catch up eps soon!

Happy to know that someone here is from the Philippines too. Hello @Janey! 🙂
Yes, @packmule3, you should visit Siargao! I’ve been there and we only stayed for a short time. The resort you mentioned wasn’t built yet during that time (2012?) but you’ll love how rugged that place is. So chill and doesn’t feel like PH at all, bec so many foreigners love to stay to surf.

Anyway, I’m heading out for some furniture shopping!

Hope everyone’s safe and healthy! *Prayers!

  57. @jhans and @pingpongpang, condolences on your losses. I will pray for them and you.

I am grateful for this online community. It’s been a solace during the pandemic. Now the strange rhythm of recovery and setbacks on repeat makes me reflect that no country can be smug about its health policies. I’m hoping and praying for world-wide recovery. It’s been done for other diseases, so please may it happen for Covid?

Today I’m so happy for a dry day because there’s something so pleasant to me about washed bedding dried outside.☀️☺️😍

  58. Yes, @GB, no romance from what I’ve seen on Instagram. I’m good because it’s Jin Young. 😉 Looks like my boy had a lot of crying scenes too.

Oh I really hope you’ll be able to recover from your ENT. I remember back in the years where I was very allergic to prawns as in I’ll have welts all over and the most puffy lips in the world. ☹️

But I said to myself I can’t live in this world without prawns so I pursued it and I’ve built my immunity to it. Happy me and my prawns. ☺️

  59. @agdr03, I have just finished with work. Today I don’t move a lot. Just made a quick 30%(?) homemade pizza as breakfast. kekeke. and right now defrosting my chicked fillet and prep for my late lunch/early dinner… still feel a tinge of pain whenever I move my right hand, even slightly both ways – left and right. I am trying not to over move.. previously, I felt numbing pain when I just rest my arm on the desk while typing on my keyboard. Today a bit better.

I am have been watching Suit the original series for the past few weeks. I might finish off TDJ and YAMS later this year in between study breaks, when the mood returns for anything korean. Luckily, as a YYS’s fan I will only get to see his new drama next year when it will be available on Netflix. So I have an extended cooling off period to rest my mind. Thankfully his next project is not anything remotely close to AJW lol.

Shin Minha is tooooooo pretty to ignore but I am not a fan of KSH. I haven’t watched him in anything iirc. The clips of him in Start-up have not gain my interest, yet. hehehe

  60. Rest up @miracle23. Hopefully you’ll have a good day despite the shoulder issue. 🤗

I’m not a fan of KSH too but I’ll give it a go because of Shin Minah. 🥰

  61. Kalimera !

    @Fern,
Yes ours are sweet and aromatic. When it is too hot, there are / were times where I am / was only eating watermelon as dinner.
I do hope that you will eat a sweet one pretty soon!

@Pingpongpang, I am so sorry for your loss. *virtual hug*
Yes, I was cleaning the past days so I do hope this moving will finish until the end of the month! Thank you!

@GB, thank you! As long as this screwdriver comes my way I will do this! How do you feel? I read that you ENT is acting up!
I want to see “The Devil Judge” as well. I will see how this will go!

@Lovebagnwon, I have plans when we will be able to travel. Bali sounds pretty good and I would love to eat rambutan!
Yes it does. It is sort of a salad. We only add feta cheese.

@Miracle23, I need to write these fruits down! I do hope your frozen shoulder will go away eventually.

@Sayaris you made me nostalgic about Italy. I would love to go to Florence, Sisily and visit again Naples.

As for Hometown Cha Cha Cha, I am waiting it because of Shin Minah as well @agdr03!

@agdr03 For some reason unknown I am into sorbet mango and fruits of passion or strawberry. My favorite is caramel! Hugs to you too!

@Jhans, I am sorry for your loss.

  62. @Cleopatra, there were fires in the region of Naples, not sure it’s the best period for now. But I wanted to go there in May but because of the COVID by plane was cancelled… So a next time! I already went once but our expedition in Capri was not a good memory, so I want to go back! I loved Florence and Sicilia, I want to visit the part of the isldand I didn’t visit the first time.

  63. @Sayaris,

I am not planning to travel abroad at the moment. When things will calm down. I have heard that many places had fires this past summer.

I want to go to Florence to visit all those places I have read about during my art studies.

As for Sicilia I have heard for several people that it is a beautiful place.

I do hope you will go too, when the time is right!

@pm3, I cook rice today and remembered about your question. This is how it will look like after few times rinse. Use my hand to stir and wash the rice .. I usually grab a handful of the rice multiple times like washing before I rinse the murky water and redo until I got the clear water. Hope this helps!😁

  65. PS: Regarding rice washing, I read @miracle23’s comment, and it reminded me of my mother’s (in the UK) routine. In my childhood we did not eat a huge amount of rice – it featured mainly for baked rice puddings. However, it was a serious undertaking. The rice had to be washed seven times in a volume of water that was at least five times greater than the amount of rice. The aim was that in the final pudding state, the grains were still slightly separated. And now I can’t make any dish featuring rice unless I wash it seven times in plenty of water; I just don’t feel right if I don’t, thanks to my mother.

“The Devil Judge” has finished, and I’m quite satisfied with the ending.

  66. PPS: @packmule3 I do hope that your gloomy days of distress have stopped and that the problems are resolving themselves.

  67. Part of the rhythm section of my youth is gone. RIP Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts. Thanks for all the great dance beats.

  68. Sorry to hear about him. He was cool, alright.

  69. @Welmaris/@Fern

I mourn with you. My brother and I were just now talking about Charlie Watts and the ace musician that he was.

  70. Yes, @Juriel, it’s all over the BBC, right? Surely there will be a special soon to celebrate his life. I love to remember his wry smile as he watched the high-jinks of the others on the stage — without missing a beat. And sharply dressed, too, compared to the rest.

  71. Gosh, two music legends passed away within days of each other, Don Everly of the Everly Brothers and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. Condolences to their famiies, friends, and fans. I hope we will see some tribute performances or programs about them soon.

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched an American show. I happened upon this 2018 movie, “Not Cinderella’s Type” and was delighted to find it more real, and wholesome with likable, reasonable, and mature teen characters. It’s a simple, straightforward tale, which is a relief from convoluted plots and needing to read between the lines. A nice little break from my normal fare, with a useful note on emotional abuse and how a victim can be helped. The whole movie is available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jvqXxt3WNo

  73. I watched D.P. a very dark KDrama by Netflix but it was really great. The acting was very good and the story painful to watch but it’s this kind of truth necessary to tell. The OST was pretty good too.

  74. Hello friends,

Today we lost one of our greatest composers of the 20th century Mikis Theodorakis. He was 96 y.o. We are mourning and we are remembering his exquisite melodies.

He wrote music for the movies. He wrote music that turned into songs great poems by our most beloved Greek Poets, along them was our Poetry Nobel Winners, George Seferis and Odysseas Elytis. He composed “Canto General” accompanying Pablo Neruda’s poetry. He was experimenting in several music genres.

He fought for his beliefs, he was arrested, he went to exile.
He came back and made us remember who we are via his music.

This is the closure of an era.

    Beautiful city, voices, music,
    endless streets, stolen glances…
    The sun gilds sown hands,
mountains and construction sites, laid out pelagoes.

You shall be mine before the night comes
the pale lights before they cast nets
    you shall be mine.

You shall be mine before the night comes

    you shall be mine.

The night came, the windows closed
the night has fallen, the streets are lost.

  75. Rest in Peace, Mikis Theodorakis.

  76. My condolences, @Cleooatra, on this painful loss for you and your nation. May Mikis Theodorakis’s legacy in word and song continue to speak through the ages.

  77. Thank you @Fern and @Welmaris <3

  78. @packmule3, I just saw a nice way of washing rice. This is from a c-drama that @agdr03 persuaded me to watch: Falling into Your Smile, Ep. 11 at about 28 minutes. Enjoy the scenery.

    https://watchasian.in/falling-into-your-smile-2021-episode-11.html

  79. Wait a second, @Fern.

That guy just washed the rice once?!!! Call the police! He’s 🚨 a rice non-repeat offender. 😂

  80. @packmule3 confession time – I never wash my rice. 😂. Especially if you’re using non starchy rice like Basmati. I figure, why would you want to wash the starch off? If you want a non-starchy rice then just use Basmati. I used to watch my grandaunt wash the rice and that was in the day where the rice had weevils in it. So as she washed the rice, she would pick out the weevils. In our modern times, when was the last time you found any weevils in your bags of rice? Never? So I stopped washing the rice. I still do it when I cook for others eg church lunch when there are eyes watching. But when I am at home, I skip it. I don’t taste the difference. 😂. But then again, I am not a Rice Nazi.

  81. I’m just now reading this recipe, @Growing_Beautifully. This egg-drop Enoki mushroom soup sounds fancy. I’ve to bookmark this for winter. I think it will taste great with the crab meat too. Thanks!

  82. @nrllee and @packmule3, I just rinse the rice in a wire colander, so what kind of criminal am I? Still, I could watch that guy rinse on repeat as many times as I like, even if it’s just once in the drama. Tell me it’s not tasty. 😈 I blame my friends for leading me astray.

  83. Howdy Ladies! I wash our jasmine rice twice and that’s it. ☺️

Am I that friend, @Fern? 😂 Xu Kai can wash my rice even just once and it’ll do. 😜

  84. @Fern does it matter? 😂. Honestly I can’t taste the difference. Then again I am also not a coffee snob. I happily drink instant coffee (stick coffee)…as opposed to hubby who loves his plunger coffee (real stuff he says).

  85. @nrllee – good to know we are Not the only ones who don’t rinse/wash our rice! We mix half jasmine, half basmati together, pour water, measure using finger (taught the kids this also) and put it in the rice cooker. It’s cute to see the basmati rice grains sticking out higher than the jasmine when cooked. I only rinse the rice if I need rice water for another dish like some soups.

  86. Sometimes I like the rice a bit sticky, because it’s easier to pick up with chopsticks. In defense of Xu Kai, his character was making porridge because they were both unwell. I still make the rice in a sauce pan with a lid, using Janey’s finger method or 1:2.

@agdr03, now you’ve got YY as your Fed Ex man and Xu Kai rinsing your rice. Please send photos.

  87. @Janey — ooh, wow, yay! I am a late bloomer when it comes to cooking. (Only learned how to seriously cook for myself last year during the lockdown, can you imagine?! 🙈) And I was recently taught by my mother to save some of the rice water when making soups! 🤯

But generally I wash my rice till the water is clear. 😅 no reason, just force of habit. 🙃

  88. @Fern, I don’t know how to put photos here in the blog. hahahah

But I think I cannot have Yang Yang as my next door Fedex guy. hhahah I need to upgrade him.

Xu Kai can stay as my rice cook-er. LOL!

  89. Okay, @Janey. I’ll bite. 😂

What do you mean you measure with your finger? Measure what? The rice? Don’t you use a measuring cup?

I think I need to separate our talk about rice and give it another thread. 😂😂

  90. @packmule3, you use your finger to measure water! 😁😁😁 my grandparents used to do this; my aunts and uncles, even cousins do this. YouTube character Uncle Roger mentioned this in one of his videos, too. Im pretty sure it’s common practice among Asians. 🙂

But I dont do it. We didn’t do it at home. (My rice to water ratio is x is to x + 1.)

@Janey probably has the details down pat. 😊 I think you even match the water to a particular finger joint, if im not mistaken, heeheehee. 😊

  91. Rice water for soup?

I poured the rice water on my kitchen herbs to conserve water, and the mint and basil died. 😂 I’m not going to reuse rice water again.

  92. @pandamilktea,

Is this finger-joint measuring thing on YouTube? I have got to see the demo for this one. 😆

Who’s Uncle Roger? You mean Fred Rogers of Mr Rogers’ neighborhood? Yes, I loved watching his how-to segments. He toured all different sorts of factories (pretzel, candy, bread, ice cream, etc.) and showed his young viewers how things were made. Sigh. Those were the good old days. I can’t believe he’s been dead almost 20 years now.

But I didn’t know he visited a granary too. There’s no rice field in Pennsylvania. 🤔

  93. @packmule3 it’s highly scientific. The finger method 😂👍

    https://youtu.be/DbTVULD2jmU

This lady shows you one way. But I have been taught to smooth out the rice then hover the tip of your index finger on the top of the rice…add water till it’s level with the first joint. Read the first comment on the YouTube above. I don’t drill my finger into the rice like she does.

  94. Thanks, @nrllee. I’ll have to watch this YT vid on my laptop. It’s not showing on my k-pad.

  95. Ohnonononono, Uncle Roger is not Mr. Rogers. Goodness, no, far from it. 😅😂 Uncle Roger is a character created by a Malaysian comedian living in the UK, based on a supposedly stereotypical Asian uncle.

I learned of him because he had a video that went viral a year ago, where his stereotype character reacted to a chef on a BBC show cooking Chinese fried rice, well, differently. (https://youtu.be/53me-Ici_58) Caveat: the character is reeeally playing into the stereotype, so mileages may vary as to whether one may find him funny. (Personally, I don’t find it offensive, but I also dont find the comedian funny. 😬) Anyway, the video has some tips if anybody wants to cook Chinese fried rice. 😅😁

Also, here is a video I found on Google about measuring water using one’s index finger. 🙂 — https://youtu.be/NdAA634JMjw

  96. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

On the simple soup … You are certainly most welcome @pkml3! Yes, you can throw in anything you like, practically. Crab meat, dried scallops, dried oysters/shellfish… If you like it thicker for Winter, just thicken it anyway you choose. I go for the easy way with corn starch, but you can go the butter and flour route for extra rich buttery flavour. 🙂

  97. Here’s Uncle Roger with his rice cooking method: ‘Not the BBC way but the Asian way.’ Lots of rinsing first.

  98. Hello everyone! I enjoy reading your discussion on cooking rice. I didn’t know there were so many different opinions regarding this. I hope you don’t mind me joining in. 😅

In our home, we normally wash rice only twice. Personally, I wash it three times if it’s still too murky with many rice hulls even after washing it twice. But three is the maximum. Just like @Janey, there were also times when rice water is used in a soup dish (the 2nd wash). When I asked my mom years ago why we only wash the rice twice and no more, her explanation was that we need to retain some of the nutrients.

On the amount of water used, my usual ratio is the same as @pandamilktea’s, x+1. Though it may sometimes depend on the rice variety. There are those that only require the same amount as that of the rice. While cooking rice, there were times when I would forget the amount of water I had already placed, thus I use the finger method to check. Lol. Whenever I do so, I also smoothen the rice and measure by hovering the finger on top of the rice like how @nrllee explained.

  99. @nrllee – looks like we went to the same rice cooking school! LOL! I was also taught to hover my finger over the smoothed out grain level and the water on top of it should be at the first joint. No drilling down.

And this works even on multiple cups of rice, too. As part of research, if you follow your rice cooker instructions on the #of cups of rice and the corresponding level of water, you will see that the first joint is a consistent estimate of where the water level should be.

    Hope this helps!

  100. @Janey,

Which finger are you talking about? The pointer, right? Or the middle finger? The first joints of our fingers aren’t lined up.

😂 I used Uncle Ben’s rice and the instructions are rather straightforward. 1 cup rice: 2 1/4 cup water. Add butter. No washing needed. 🙂

But when I must cook Asian rice for fish, sushi, etc., I use the Japanese rice that’s sold as Kokuho Rose brand. (Don’t know the variety of the grain) The instructions specifically said no washing required. But because I listened to you (was it @Grace?) I’ve been washing it too, lately. 😂

I really can’t tell the difference in taste between starchy and non-starchy rice. All I observed was that the rice for salmon sushi 🍣 didn’t stick well (or wasn’t as gummy as before) after I washed the rice.

  101. @PM3, I use the index finger but the middle finger is also a good estimation. The first joint are almost the same length. It’s the 2nd and 3rd joints that have different lengths. When I taught the kids, we made fun of the middle finger to measure the water level so they will remember. 😉

It’s true that different varieties of rice may require more or less water. So it’s always good to follow the cooking instructions. But as @jwave said, if you forget how much water you’ve poured in, using the finger method is a good check.

  102. @Janey, yes the finger measuring method is my go to as well. Usually for starchy rice, like the fragrant rice, the measure of water I use is 1.5 i.e 1 is the first joint line and 0.5 of the 2nd joint. If it is basmathi, water will be less (i.e. 1 to 1.3 finger measurement) so that the rice doesn’t become sodden and overcooked.

I saw a method in kdrama. Put you palm face down on top of the rice, as if pressing it down. The water should cover your hand.

  103. @miracle – oh, that’s right! The water should cover the hand pressed against the grains. I was measuring the first joint to my hand and it’s more or less close to it.

  104. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Janey @Miracle, yes, I use both methods (palm down or finger joint) and they are about the same! 🙂
