@Growing_Beautifully, @Welmaris, @Janey, @nrllee, @Fern, @Cleopatra, @Kuroshio, and @FGB4877 will be here!
Thanks for this early thread @pkml3!! I expected that you might have set it to open in another 6 hours’ time.
I’m all eager to watch for clues that shows the most unexpected suggestion that Grim Reaper was not who the editing seems to show him to be, in his past life. It’s a funny (ha-ha) as well as funny (incongruous) thought to play with.
See you in 14.5 hours!! 🙂
My dear Goblin rewatch friends, you’ll need to see this before Episode 2. Trust me.
https://youtu.be/EOKJ5quzgB0
Hahahah @welmaris that video is adorable….and made me think of Gong Yoo in his underwear which was very fun LOL.
12 hrs to go and I’m already so excited to watch ep2 together.
Bwahahaha @Welmaris!!! Your video link is so funny! It’s a must watch indeed.
See you all later!
@welmaris what did I just watch? 😂. Can’t stay up to watch with you girls but will catch up and comment Sunday night.
LOLOL @Welmaris, that was so cute and so apt.
Here’s the original kiddy song in Korean (that we’ll hear in Show). Can’t help sniggering each time I hear it.
@GB – we will hear this song in the show? LOL! How did I miss that? You should let us know what part . This version is 2000 years old underparts. Yikes!!! That’s why goblins are scary. 💩 💩
@Janey, the song is in Episode 2, timestamp 41:43. Grim R sings it with gusto LOL.
I can see the English version decided to go politically correct and didn’t mention tiger leather, as tigers are globally listed as endangered.
Those videos are too funny. I hope that I can attend today.
We hope to see you later too @Fern! This episode will be fun!!
Cant’ resist a bit of a countdown. 4 hours to go and counting!!!
😝 🥳 😎 😆
I was wondering if we would have the party today.
Hooray!! I am here and ready to go!
Hi @Kuroshio! I’m often stalking this thread on Saturdays, therefore I’m definitely here!! We’ll start in 15 minutes time. 🙂
Kalispera Everyone!
I am here! @GB Unnie, happy birthday to your daughter for today and happy bday for you tomorrow! I am wishing you two will have a great weekend ! <3
Are we all here?
I’m here. Been up two hours already, since 4am. I’m in Seattle visiting my younger daughter, and the news reported that this weekend we may have a chance to see the Aurora Borealis. Optimal time was 4-6am this morning. Nothing showed up, as far as I could see.
Let’s go! It’s Goblin Time!
Hi @Cleo!! Thanks for your wishes. We just had a nice cake.
Now … it’s 9pm by my clock so it’s time to go. Let’s start our party!!!
Kalimera @Welmaris! Aurora Borealis yeah!
@GB I am glad you had a nice cake ! You are welcome! :*
I love the colour of Canada. The light is different and the colours come out looking so rich.
I like how Eun Tak is teasing him….LMAO!
Song: 10cm – My Eyes.
I am wondering when or in which point did Goblin fell to her exactlly
@Kuroshio he has already fallen. But he will acknowledge it in a while…
When we will hear the poem.
You know @Kuroshio, this scene where she’s in the Christmas shop and smiles sweetly at KS. He is suddenly aware of something. His expression changed. I think he suddenly realised that she’s an attractive girl. It may not be that he fell for her, but he did find her pretty, although he loathed to admit it.
I love how Goblin is physically off balance when he goes to follow the enthusiastic Eun Tak away from the red door.
I love how Eun Tak doesn’t try to hide her excitement. Talk about living in the moment! Goblin looks so overwhelmed, trying to keep up with the whirlwind. I find Eun Tak’s behavior age appropriate i these scenes. Even her teasing Goblin after declaring “I love you!”
I was preparing my coffee and my arepas, now I am with you 😉 . Happy to read you all and Happy Birthday again to you @GB!!!
Kalimera @FGB4877!
@Cleo, I think that KS was mainly taken by surprise and then intrigued by her high-spiritedness and chatter. He’d never met a female like her. And the thing is that he caught that leaf for her although she told him what it meant and to throw it away. But he interestingly held on to that leaf despite all that. It was probably a sign that he unconsciously was interested in her already.
We recall that he refused to get her a boyfriend too!
@GB @Clepatra you are the reason I love here.I am sure my husbadn would roll his eyes, if I ask him the same question.
Welcome @FGB. I’m happy that you’re here this week. 🙂
@GB,
Yes, that is true. I like his poker face in all that banter…
He will acknowledge it when he is going to read the poem though. That is the poem all about anyway.
And now we get to see the reckless driver that hit and run Eun Tak’s pregant mom.
Hello rewatchers!!! I am here and a bit late, blaming the snooze button. Will catch up!
Correction: Pregnant*
It is incredibly funny to watch an almost omnipotent being turned into a baffled mess by a young girl XD . He might have the power but she is in control XD XD XD XD XD .
Hi @Janey!! We’re at 11 minutes now. I am slower today because I’m pausing in between to slow it down to read the subs.
Hello @Janey! Welcome!
Song: Dark Walk.
Kim Shin is feeling his life as a punishment. He is the mere survivor and he can see the death of all those who loved…
@FGB I loved how off kilter Goblin was, but he turned the tables on her over and over again by refusing to admit who he was and denying who she was.
@Cleo, the deity really gave KS the most apt punishment because he was not an unfeeling sort to begin with. But deity made him never forget a single life and death. That was painful. He had to keep grieving for his lost friends. No wonder he was jaded and cynical after over 900 years.
We can hear it as he speaks to the graves.
And we are partying today for @GB and her daughter’s birthday!!! Many happy returns of the day!!! 🎉 🎈 🎊
Autumn feels with the maple leaves! I like the picturesque scenes here in Quebec!
“I found you.” This line will be everything later on…
Song: Lasse Lidnh – Hush
ET: If you catch a falling maple leaf…
[Goblin catches a maple leaf.]
ET: You caught it? Hurry and throw it away.
[Goblin keeps the leaf out of ET’s reach.]
G: Why should I?
ET: If you catch a falling maple leaf, you’ll fall in love with the person you are walking with.
G: Be honest. You just made that up, right?
ET: I didn’t. It’s in teh same category of catching a falling cherry blossom and your first love comes true.
Remember that in Episode 1, when 8-year-old ET was on the beach with her mother just before her birthday, ET caught a falling cherry blossom petal. It was out of season, because ET’s birthday is September 13. I believe it was a sign that Goblin was near, watching over her, and happy. So they’ve both now gotten signs that their love is fated.
@GB,
So very true. He is cynical and he misses them a lot…
@Janey so very true. The photography is so pretty…
I notice how it means so much to ET that she has an identity and a connection as the goblin’s bride. KS keeps denying her that, but he’s conflicted.
Each time he lies that he’s not the goblin or says that she’s not his bride, she’s hurt. Poor Eun Tak.
Her teacher will swallow her tongue later one when our favorite granny will talk to her…
In the rewatch I’m catching so many of GY’s expressions. Im picking up so much more how he likes her but is holding himself back. Whether it’s her age or that he’s not sure she is his bride — but he knows she is right? I’m confused with that. Or maybe it’s that he’s waiting for her to confirm seeing the sword?
In any case, there is already interest and a powerful connection. So much more deep that I got on the first watch. This rewatch is really a gift to enjoy the show in a whole new depth of appreciation and understanding.
@Cleo that teacher is the bullying type. There’s no reason to hate ET but because she’s poor, teacher treats her without respect, trying to crush her when she should be building her up as a good teacher. That’s why Samshin was right to scold teacher. To Samshin, teacher was also a ‘child’ but one who had behaved badly.
He is trying to see if the Hanza can follow him back…LMAO!
@FGB, That is so true…
I LOVE THEM! LMAO! They are so funny together!
@MrsRJH1 Hi there! Yes, KS realises to his chagrin that although ET does not appear to see the sword, he does think her a pretty girl, and would have liked to have had her for his bride. But he denies himself because she’s did not mention the sword and because she’s unexpectedly a child. He’s got to be so careful that he does not take advantage of her in her innocence and naivete. He was in a pickle, so he tried to keep a distance from her.
@GB,
I agree with you. Samshin is a hottie here right! LMAO!
It is spinach this time! Eun Tak is puzzled!
@Cleo that top of Saja looked like Eeyore’s tail. So funny that shirt from behind. These 2 guys Saja and Goblin are so cute together.
@GB,
I simply love them. I remember that I laughed so much the first time around. That’s why I looked about them. When I found out about their bdays. GY is a Cancer and LDW is a Scorpio. Water signs, that’s why they have such a bond and they are so good together…
Here ET opens the door and it’s the Ladies washroom!!! Fortunately not the Men’s washroom LOL. But that means, KS opened that door and could have entered the Ladies by mistake!!
Yes @Cleo spinach this time.
You know I found it strange that she told her to feed the family with spinach, but it choked the male cousin. ET however was able to eat it in her kimbap.
ET is so chatty like a high schooler! She has even changed her voice and delivery here.
When she met the Canadian ghost, she was even more scared because he spoke to her in English! LOL!
He is lying of course…Kim Shin you naughty boy! LMAO!
Thank you @GB, makes so much sense. Bahahaha love his fake out about her summoning him when he goes there himself.
@Janey, Kim Go Eun is amazing in this show. I never once saw her looking like an adult when she was playing the 19 year old. Totally convincing as a high schooler… voice, behaviour, body language… And when she was an adult same thing totally not like the 19 year old girl but yet, still Eun Tak. Loved KGE in this show.
@GB, @Janey I love Kim Go Eun. I think she is very talented indeed!
Sunny! Our pretty lady! 😀
Her dandelion seeds reaching to him remembers me a scene in The Tale of Genji where the Shining Prince sets up a meeting between Tamakazura and Prince Sochinoiya at night, and since she is behind a curtain Genji lets open a bag of fireflies to insinuate her presence and her figure.
It was an elegant way to show connection (in Goblin).
Sunny: “Then starting for today, it’s day one for us.”
@MrsRJH1
KS lies in bed wondering who Eun Tak is.
KS : “She touched me and followed me through the door, but can’t see the blade. Who is she, exactly?” [He recalls her saying ‘I’m someone who’ll become ahjusshi’s bride in about 200 years or so.] [I love you!] (He’d stared at her in confusion.)
“Above all else, I’m really in a sticky situation if all of that is true.”
“Curiosity always bests decorum.” (He runs off to locate ET to ask her questions.)
He manages to find her but pretends that she summoned him.
KS is so full of needing to upkeep his image and not admit to being curious, so that he had to repeatedly lie to ET. He tries to keep his pride by pretending that she’s the one who called him. She’s led to believe that just by thinking of him he would be summoned. I felt so sorry for her.
More about Kim Shin’s lies … He walks with ET but protests that it’s only to digest his dinner.
KS is very aware and worried that she may get the wrong idea … ie the idea that he likes her in a romantic way? Perhaps because he’s feeling guilty that he came to see her and made her think that she summoned him. And he’s staying on because he does like her, but won’t admit it.
This scene that is everything! LMAO!
The way he ruefully follows her like she will be the death of him XD … (figuratively)
What a nice way of phrasing it @FGB. Yes the dandelions were a connection … she kept reaching out to him, and she’s the one who summons him.
He doesn’t let him sleep…
Here is 900 years old shy teen in love.
Here comes the song LMAO!
So strange that Sunny’s shop has no customers most of the time. Most chicken restaurants are very popular with people, for take out at least if not to eat in.
LOL she summoned him during dinner. He seems to only eat steaks.
Now he wants to exchange tel numbers LOL.
It’s interesting that she says “Oh, but I intend to meet you after making plans, later down the line.” But I’m not sure which time of meeting she meant here. Ultimately of course she wanted to give him the leaf. Maybe that would be the time she’s referring to here?
Love this scene of Goblin fashion show in front of poor Reaper. Won’t let him sleep at all. What a show off Goblin is!!! LOL
Oh are you at the Goblin’s Pants song now? Yeah I can’t stop laughing at it. I’m watching it more slowly this week to keep from being too far ahead of FGB and Janey.
@GB,
Although, I have slowed it down. Yes I have passed the song too. I am in the leaf part…
I wonder why Reapers bed clothes changed from white to flowery.
So revenge the next day, Reaper sings the Goblin’s Pants song LOL. Love it. So childish for such ‘great gods’ He’s annoyed so his mood shows up as a thunderstorm but only over Seongbuk Dong. LOLOL.
It’s interesting that Deok Hwa worries about the weather and comes to KS each time the weather changes.
@GB,
When Kim Shim is feeling sad then it is raining. Deok Hwa or should we say the Nabi Shin knows about it and came to his Samcheon.
We see that Deok Hwa’s expression becomes serious and aware from time to time. It was the only clue we were given.
KS levitates every now and then, but DH never gave him that much respect… Heh! That actually was a sign of something but I won’t leave a spoiler.
I find that Goblin is a little bit petty (mean?)
The Umbrella Motif. I’ll put down more on it later.
I like that Sunny is the first person to give ET an umbrella
(and her first living ordinary human friend). It’s so appropriate… the Sunny person gives the umbrella away on a rainy day. Sunny is interesting because she sees more in ET and her neediness, but she always behaves like she can’t help ET and is indifferent, when she isn’t.
The Hanza found the Lost Soul by accident.
And now Kim Shin will reveal himself to her, that he is indeed the Goblin and she is the goblin’s wife.
Conversation between Grim Reaper and co-worker.
“But how does a miscellaneously omitted person happen?…”
GR: It’s like a god’s whim. Humans call that a miracle. And we call that a miscellaneously omitted person.
The grim reaper bureaucracy doesn’t recognize the will of the gods as being higher authority. Rules are rules, as far as the grim reapers are concerned, and changes to their work orders aren’t acceptable, no matter the source. It is interesting that Grim Reaper does recognize Goblin as being of equal or greater power than him, but when it comes to Goblin overriding Grim Reaper on allowing Eun Tak to continue living, Grim Reaper is against it purely because it bucks bureaucracy.
I also like how Goblin’s life, as he’s been living it, is explained in one of Grim Reaper’s cases. It is better exposition than just having Goblin talk about himself.
GR: Your body will be ripped in pieces every day. Every second you feel agony you will regret what you did. But that agony will never cease. Forever.
Hit & Run Driver: I did wrong. Forgive me.
GR: Well, he’s quite impulsive [pointing up]. I know someone who is living in hell with all the memories of his life intact. I’m sure he’s begged countless times for forgiveness, too. But there was no use, he was still standing in the middle of hell. [We see Goblin in Quebec, bouquet of flowers in hand, standing at a grave.]
The hit-and-run driver who’d killed two people, one being Eun Tak’s mother 19 years ago, would be punished with physical pain (body ripped in pieces) because he’d killed his victims by causing them great bodily harm and showing no remorse. He didn’t value anyone else’s body beside his own. Goblin’s hell was psychological punishment (as well as some physical, from the sword imbedded in him). He’d killed many people, not by his own will but as an agent of the king; however, since each person he killed in battle was a person of worth, created by the almighty, the almighty gave Goblin the punishment of never forgetting any of the mortals who’d been part of his life and died while Goblin lived. Those memories, immortal along with Goblin, taught Goblin about the worth of every person.
@Cleo I’m still at the point where KS is so full of his image that he’s waiting to be summoned while looking suave and accomplished.
ET is with her friend and I didn’t know at this stage that this friend is not alive.
Yes, I’ve come to the part where ET meets Reaper again.
I still remember the video in the variete “Sea of Hope” where LDW is calling KGE as lost soul or Eun Tak or Eun Takki, GoEunni. He will forever call her like that and it won’t change. I was so touched by this…
I have stopped that part in order to watch it twice @GB.
He is being summoned but the Hanza is there as well. Too powerful as a scene…
Reaper asks ET who she’s with this time, and Shin is suddenly there. She runs to cover Shin’s eyes to protect him from Reaper. Shin stares at her. This is the most unexpected and generous gesture that a mere human is showing to a god. He might have been quite touched that she wanted to protect him from Reaper.
He returns the favour by protecting her, holding her a little behind him so that he stands between Reaper and ET. KS shows his temper by the lightning and thunder as he threatens Reaper.
KS : “It’s okay, just stay here. He won’t be able to take you.”
ET : “He’s been looking for me for 10 years.”
KS :”Still, it doesn’t matter if he’s been looking for you for 100 years. No GR can take a girl who wants to marry a goblin. Especially not on his watch.” (She stares at him.)
GR : “So is she…”
ET “Yes, I am. It’s me. I am that famous goblin’s bride.”
(She’s always held on to that as one big part of her identity, thinking it would give her possibly some kind of support or a connection with another being.)
ET: “I knew it. So why did you lie and tell me that you weren’t the goblin?”
KS : Because at first, I had no idea that I’d be seeing you again. I didn’t know that you’d be able to follow me through the door when nobody else has.”
ET : “What about after that?”
KS : “…Because you never were and probably never will be the Goblin’s Bride.”
Poor ET is almost in tears.
ET : “Then what am I? Ghosts always talk to me because of the Goblin’s Bride thing and they harass me more if I ever ignore them. And they won’t leave my side if I acknowledge them. I’m alive, and yet the GR says that I shouldn’t be alive. So what am I, then?” (The question of her identity keeps cropping up.)
KS : “I told you already. you’re going to have to just put up with it. I hardly think that this is something for you to be complaining to me about.” (He absolves himself of responsibility over her, when she of all human beings should be his greatest responsibility.)
… And in the middle of her despair, suddenly it comes dancing Rime, Reason, Poetry and Magic all at once…
He lied to her and she was mad and disappointed at the same time.
I really liked their heated conversation. Eun Tak said it all to his face.
@Cleo Yes, I’m still in that scene and I paused it. I loved how he assures her that she’s pretty (at last) and that gives her pause after her many sentences. He looks like he feels a little bad at being so mean to her so now he’s explaining why he says she’s not his bride. It isn’t because she isn’t pretty, etc but because she cannot see something.
@GB,
I am going to rewatch that part. It was so intense.
I liked how he said that she is pretty.
However,Deok Hwa is giving him the solution. Be a man and apologize! LMAO!
Actually i also understand KS’s difficult position. He sort of wants ET to be his bride, but she’s a child. If she’s really his bride, then she has to bear the brunt of guilt and shock when she causes his death. It will be traumatic and for a young person, it will affect so much of her future. So he’s conflicted about wanting her to be his bride, being disappointed that she can’t be his bride, being both afraid to die and yet needing to find peace. He’s half relieved that ET isn’t able to see the sword as it will cause her to resent/despise him for what it will do to her. But he does like her as well. What a great jumble of emotions.
Of course Gong Yoo conveys this so well.
Finally saw the segment of the goblin’s underwear song!!! LOL!
I also wonder why there are no customers at Sunny’s chicken shop.
I get pulled into most of scenes and I forget to comment. I have so much to back read. But it’s all good!
Here comes the 2 gangster.
@Cleo, Yes this intense scene:
ET : “Then you should have just denied being a goblin until the end. Why are you telling me this now?”
KS : “For the same reason why I lied to you about being a goblin. So that you wouldn’t summon me out of false hope. I will soon be leaving this place.” Poor ET’s face falls. She’d hoped so much for a little improvement in her life, just a bit of help or someone to connect with, but she was going to be abandoned once again.
I’m dropping out for now, because I have to drive my daughter to the airport. I’ll be back later today, probably after I’ve taken a nap. Enjoy the rest of your group watch, dear Bitches!
ET is so mature at her young age. Although she wants to be the Goblin’s Bride, she’s very careful as well.”Who said that I’d be your bride anyway? Why would I at the young age of 19? I’m not crazy. I’ll never summon you again, so live your life at ease.”
This is the start of both of them being miserable. They actually suffered heartache without ever admitting that they liked each other.
Read ya again @Welmaris!
@GB,
I like how GY conveys so much through his eyes. His eyes say the whole story. He is stoic, when he is conflicted but his eyes reveal everything. I really like that about him as an actor. This scene was very sad, but was needed…
Later on I will say what I like from LDW.
The scene that KS and Reaper show up to rescue(without green onion) TK is so iconic. Love it!
Drive save @Welmaris! Read you later!
It was only up to this time in this Episode that ET turns around and finds that Goblin has disappeared behind her. Subsequently, I think he stayed on to watch her, rather than leave first.
@Kuroshio,
I have stopped to rewatch some parts, so I am in the part where they are abducting her!
Of course this scene is iconic! I love it as well! 😀
Correction: Have a safe drive.
She sees through his existence and his loneliness…
Reaper asks if KS was finally going to perish? Rumour has it that the goblin’s bride means your death.” (So GR did not know it for sure. He had only heard rumours. No one really knew much or even anything about the sword.)
KS : “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to. She can’t see the sword.”
GR : “You should give her some time. Maybe she’ll be able to see it without your clothes. (LOL) She’s still a child, though.”
KS : “Which is why you shouldn’t go near her.”
GR : “Why are you protecting her? You said she can’t see the sword.” (Yes, exactly… KS is conflicted. He blows both hot and cold and confuses everyone.)
KS : “Can’t you just congratulate me? I’m going to live a bit longer now.”
GR : “Do that somewhere else. I can’t live with a goblin who meddles with my life.”
I really like the banter between the two of them. They don’t realise that they sound like buddies instead of enemies.
Those upside down camera work (ET I. The Libra ray and KS in his room) with “Beautiful Life”… literally a description that their lives are now upended but they decided to not contact each other anymore.
Now KS seeing smoke was anticipating that ET was summoning him but no, it was his nephew smoking. And the house is in a fog like state to suit his mood. LOL!!!
I love this scene. They came to rescue her!
Kim Shin seems so determined and mad that they took his bride.
I really liked that Hanza came with him as back up.
After rejecting ET and she tells him she won’t summon him, they are both so miserable. We get the upside down image of KS on his bed, to ET’s head on table. Another complementary view of them superimposed on each other.
Like a true scholar, ET researches Goblin at the children’s picture book section LOL. She gets angry remembering his words and throws the leaf away by putting it into a book.
Smoke makes KS think he’s being summoned and he’s happy for a while. But it’s DH smoking. I feel DH deliberately smoked there to get KS to realise how he missed being summoned by ET.
next we get him creating clouds in the house.
Here it enters the most whimsical, ethereal and misterious character, gods included: Sunny 😀
@FGB,
I agree with you… 😀
DH actually gave KS the idea of getting a bag for ET… here he says Bag and then Credit Card as and example of how to apologise to a girl.
KS suspects that Reaper is after ET and he’s right. But ET in ‘Broken’ sweatshirt has already moved herself. She’s so smart. Poor child has no home.
She is able to get her mum’s backstory through the old lady ghost and finds out to her chagrin that she should not be angry at Goblin. However she remains angry for a while longer.
KS watches her with the ghosts. It’s noteworthy that KS can manage to find her twice in this Episode although she did not summon him. But this ability seems to fade. Perhaps it was because her goblin’s mark was fading?
Although I have finished it. I was rewatching their fight scene…
Are you finished as well?
@Cleo, No I’ve not finished. I paused it a lot.
I’m going to FFD the part where Aunty tries to get info on ET from Sunny. I love how Sunny gets rid of her by pretending her friend is a person who will beat people up.
I really like the colours of the clothes Kim Shin is wearing.
Gong Yoo looks great in red. I have to say the same for myself too…LOL
@GB,
I am rewatching Kim Shin’s blues..
Dear @Cleo, Kalimera!!!, how have you been? 😀 .
I loved Sunny as a character because she knew who she was and what she wanted. What made her special was also that she kept supporting her brother, lover and sisterly figure without making a fuss, in simple ways that were more effective than the flashy outcomes of gods interventions.
BTW, In my viewing, Sunny just gave Eun Tak her first job and she is sharing the good news with a dining Goblin.
@ Cleopatra I finished too!
Rewatchinh the very begining part of the Epsoide #2 and wondering why memory issue is a such important element in Kdrama?
@Cleo, I love KS and Reaper’s food or cutlery and dinner tableware fight LOL.
ET’s goblin mark is still strong and connects her to KS although she does not know it. It seems to direct calls for help to him or surround her with a shield of protection.
Love how cheeky Eun Tak is, chiding Goblin for being a cheapstake, him asking her to just exchange phone numbers like normal people and her replying him that she likes things as they are now XD while clearly he isn’t. Poor Goblin, poor poor Goblin…
@FGB,
I am okay. Everything are good over here, I just have a hectic programme! How are you?
I am enjoying Goblin in my first year anniversary of watching it! I am so happy that we are having a rewatch party about it. I love this story so very much.
I really like Sunny. She is true to herself and she stayed truth to herself until the end! She supported all of them, in her own way which was more deep and profound.
Ah the slow-mo walk in the dark of both gods together. Their first collaboration. Love it so much. I wonder what made Reaper accompany him but it was just so good that he did.
@FGB Agree with your comment about Sunny! So true!
@GB,
All those scenes were so well executed that is not a surprise, that they all became good friends after the series ended. GY and LDW. LDW and KGE. GY, LDW and KGE.
I know that Yoo Inna has great chemistry with Lee Dong Wook and they were the OTP in another series.
I enjoyed all those funny scenes and I could overcome what came afterwards.
@Kuroshio, what do you mean the memory element in the beginning of Ep 2?
Goblin and Death to the rescue!!! Very iconic scene when they are walking to the car. ET did not have to summon him but he got a glimpse she was in danger when her mark was seen by the kidnappers?
I agree with Gong Yoo and his eyes. They are sad and lonely despite the frills of a “good” life. KGE and GY acting here are tops!!!
Wow! Almost 2 hours and I’ve just finished. That was so nice.
I am now rewatching with different subs from before. So I’m getting some new insights at times. Slight differences in nuances of meanings.
@Kuroshio,
Because Kim Shim seems to remember it all and live in regrets maybe, while Hanza doesn’t remember.
His job is to give the dead the tea that makes them forget everything.
Only Sunny took the most profound decision not to forget and remember it all when her brother was erased. In a way, she lived in a human world where noone remembered him, but herself. I am not talking about the Hanza here.
You are right. These series has to do with memories, regrets and love.
@Janey,
If you look closely you can see more. I think GY has depth as a person as well. It is not only an acting device here. The same applies to LDW. Later on when we are going to see him cry, oh my. He made me cry with him…
@Janey, I always did wonder about the different ways that KS could know where ET was. One way seems to be through the goblin mark on her neck. When she cries for help, as in pray, he can hear her. It only happened this one time with the mark suddenly lighting up though. The ability seemed to wane or ET did not cry out for help in the same way. There would be another time much later on, but it was different.
@Janey,
I think it was a combination of being in danger and praying earnesty at the same time. She was praying to be saved.
One thing that ET doesn’t know (yet) about being goblin’s wife is the she will end his life. The ghosts have not told her about this but GR knew. That’s why KS said she is lucky not to see what she was supposed to see (to make her a legit goblin wife), else she will despise him.
If looks could kill, then Kim Shin would end those two who abducted Eun Tak…
I finished the last part for the second time!
We are given the scene in the Reaper’s tea house to tell us that going into the afterlife with memories intact, of one’s misdeeds is everlasting hell. Reaper thinks of KS as one person who is suffering this punishment.
However later we will see that this is turned on its head, and it can be a good thing to keep memories.
There will be more on remembering and forgetting later.
@GB,
This is a matter of choice. We will find out that it is our choice to remember or forget. Which is not bad per se. Hanza will find out by himself.
Got to run now , see you next week!
@GB yes. I like how the reaper persuade people to take the tea.The way he put it is so sad and beauftiful. But I also found that this kind of story( Doom at Your Service, Hotel Del Luna, etc) always there is something about memory or amnesia and wonder why? Is it a culture thing or there is something I have missed?
He complains and rebels, but at the end of the day he wants her to summon him ;D
Thanks for the rewatch!!! Will have to go see KGE at Yumi in the last episode. I love that I can differentiate her characters in every show I have watched. Glad to know she is good friends with GY and LDW. She also has close relationship with her TKEM cast mates.
Happy weekend everyone!!!
And happy birthday weekend again to @GB unnie!!!
@Cleo, I’m back to watching Canada and the pretty colours. How sweetly exuberant ET was there, and how scared, sad and angry she is by the end of the episode. How KS changed from putting up with the chattering child to choosing to protect her from Reaper and the kidnappers or anyone who might harm her.
I feel that ET did not expect KS to catch a leaf because she wanted to do it. She actually was probably thinking of KS more than the handsome Canadian ghost when she was trying to catch the leaf. But when he did, and he refused to throw the leaf away, she improvised by saying that she wanted the leaf because of the Canadian ghost. She was teasing him and he was a bit put off that she’d noticed another guy when she was walking with him!
The important thing was that one had to be walking with someone and catch the leaf. So the significance of it actually pertained to KS and not to the ghost. But since KS kept denying that he was the goblin or that she was the bride, she took the leaf away.
However, she wanted to give it to KS anyway, in the end, and it would have a profound meaning, again, to do with remembering.
Bye @Kuroshio and @Janey!
Thanks for another great party everyone!!
Where are you at @FGB?
@CLE How about memories, regrets, love and WISHES(prayers)?
Very interesting thought about choice!
Bye @Kuroshio and @Janey!
I have to watch Yumi’s Cell last episode as well, @Janey!
Let us enjoy the last one! I have seen that as well. They were eating at her house when WDH was taking days off from his military duty back in July?
@GB, That is so true. The leaf has a profound meaning, hence the interference of Deok Hwa. He will buy the book and he will give it back to her but he will want money. The Nabi Shin likes money, doesn’t he?
Eun Tak talking to a little girl in the child book section… “why can’t he be a Prince in a white horse”… seems like the producers did head her complaints XD XD XD XD .
Also, her reading those books about Goblins and considering them similar to doing a social media background research on her boyfriend was both funny and creepy at the same time 😉 .
It didn’t struck at me the first time I viewed it, but the delivery of the jokes is excellent.
@Kuroshio,
We can discuss about all these, while the story will be progressing!
Memories, Regrets, love and Prayers / Wishes.
Yes it is a matter of choice. We can do all of them, or some of them. We cannot do none of them in this life, unless we got a kind of amnesia. But when we will go there, we would see that even with amnesia the pain will be there.
I missed the rewatch, but looked at the episode. To me Eun Tak in Quebec was the vision of someone who had never been really happy having a good time for the first time in her life. She seemed even younger than 19 to me – more like my daughter who is 16. KGE got the movement of such a girl just right. The lighting of the scenes there emphasised her frame of mind at the moment. She didn’t forget to say thank you to Kim Shin.
Reaper’s flowery duvet cover and granny cap were so funny. The cap reappears when DH visits, as though KS gave it to him a second time. He tore it off his head as soon as he realised.
Just a question for the experts – the hand that takes the book off the shelf in the book store after Eun Tak leaves is DH’s? (as you said he is possessed by deity)
KS began this episode puzzled/intrigued/attracted by/to ET, then he wanted unravel more from ET, then he wanted her to summon him and to impress her. He suddenly finds himself automatically wanting to keep her safe from Reaper, but while fascinated by her, he does not think she’s his bride.
He pushes her away and she leaves him alone, but both of them act heartbroken.
He does go in search of her and he manages to find her speaking to the ghosts. They do not know that he is watching them.
Ghosts : “He basically saved his bride’s life. That’s so romantic.”
ET : “Everything he said was true. I had no right to hate him. I wouldn’t have been born if it weren’t for him, then I wouldn’t have had nine years’ worth of memories of my mum.”
Ghost : “Did you get upset with the goblin?”
ET admits it : “What should I do now?”
Older ghost : “What else can you do but marry him.”
From this, we learn that the ghosts only have the normal understanding of ‘bride’ as in the one destined to marry the goblin. They have not heard of the sword in his chest or that the role of the bride is to enable the goblin to die and rest in peace.
We are not shown how KS managed to locate ET, only that he did and keeps his distance while keeping her in his sights.
Hi @Fern!!! Glad you’re here. Yes, it was Deok Hwa who preserved the book and the leaf for ET. One of the few things that the god did of any real ‘good’ significance.
I kind of feel that DH and god were on and off merged from his earliest years/days.
Sunny chewed the aunt with her intelligence and class XD
Hey @Fern!
It is okay that you weren’t with us this time! I hope you enjoyed the episode! Yes, that hand belongs to Deok Hwa, although the Nabi Shin is already inside his human body. Something none of us knew this time of the game. You will get to see what happens in Episode 3!
>
I will say bye for now! Have a nice day / evening ahead! xo
You know @Fern, you have a point there and why didn’t I see it before!!! I didn’t know where the granny cap or flowery duvet came from because Reaper had plain white bed clothes. It must have been KS who changed it all while Reaper was sleeping just to get under his skin. That’s why KS was sitting in the kitchen looking so smug.
So the Goblin’s Pants song was sweet revenge. Goblin tried to make Reaper out to be a little granny so Reaper attacked him as being too ‘manly’ (whatever that means!) with his dirty underwear.
Bye @Cleo! Thanks for a great party. See you next week!!
That epic walk towards the mobster’s car is a great ending!
Will take a nap, then will properly greet you, read your comments and reply! 😀
@FGB you’re certainly enjoying the character of Sunny. She seems to speak of other things and to change subjects as if her mind is not all there, but actually she’s preventing the other party (ET in this show) from being embarrassed. She only needed to hear the ET was alone and trying to fend for herself, and that she was poor. She hired her on the spot.
This characteristic is similar to the queen ie KS’s sister, who sized up the situation, in that previous life, and tried to rectify it by openly communicating with the king. She took as much action as she could, given her limited resources, and did not make a big deal out of it.
She was quietly self-sacrificing, while choosing to do what was the most right and loving thing.
Bye @FGB!! Read you again!
@Growing Beautifully, I looked at it closely and thought I recognised his sleeve when he was caught smoking.
I’ll have to watch more to see what you mean by the deity merging with DH. -Looking forward to more episodes.
I agree with your words about KS’s confusion about her ‘bride-ness’. The subs I saw had him recollect the times she surprised him and he said, “Above all else, I’m really in a sticky situation if all of that is true.” Later ET tried to protect KS from looking directly at GR. He must have been so surprised. The he protected her and continued to do so. Despite their fight, I think he gets closer to accepting that she must be the one.
In terms of her age, probably 19 wouldn’t have been considered too young in historic times when people had to mature at an earlier age. But she seems young, especially in Quebec when she is full of child-like joy. I think the visit to a Christmas shop was well thought out to be included in the script since many of us could relate to that thrill during our childhood.
@FGB4877, when Sunny asked if ET was poor, ET didn’t actually say she was or not. It could be inferred, but also her lack of an answer could mean that she might have some money that she can’t use (the missing bank book that she hopes one day to have?)
But I liked that it was revealed that Sunny understood everything ET wanted to tell her, when the aunt tried to threaten Sunny.
I also like how the Samshin’s spinach slightly injured ET’s cousins.
@Fern, ET’s automatic action to protect KS from Reaper, even against protecting herself, and other people, besides, continues all through her life. It is consistent and informs her decisions.
Although she has been deprived of so much that should have been her due, she does not fail to be other-centred, to be appreciative of what she has, and to keep giving.
It strikes me that she is the one shown working hard physically, while the people around her just sit and do nothing much. She excepts her lot cheerfully enough and is even grateful.
She’s and admirable character through and through.
I feel that KS was mind-boggled that everything added up to ET being the bride, except the most important thing, to him. He both yearned for and feared the removal of the sword, but it was the one thing that ET refused to mention that she saw. He would have accepted her as bride immediately, if she had none of the other attributes but only saw the sword. So he was most put out that she never mentioned it.
Someone, @packmule3 perhaps?, suggested that ET was being cautious. I thought that she may have originally thought that if he were a ghost, he might have the means of his death with him and so wasn’t surprised. Like some European ghosts who carry their heads – Anne Bolyn, for example.

😄🎃
@GB – ET’s automatic action to shield KS’ eyes from the GR reminded me of DAYS when FL shielded MyulMang from the knife wielding man. These ladies tried to protect these men instinctively although they have powers to defy such damage better than the ladies. Little does ET know that even if KS did a staring contest with GR, he will not die. However, ET has the means to “kill” KS. How ironic.
@Fern, reminded me of the ghosts at Hogwarts. I agree ET is cautious and even respectful not to mention what she sees
With the ghosts she encounters. I believe that sometimes the ghost can appear to her as “normal” person and also their “dead” selves.
I’ve seen in other Kdramas, such as Hotel del Luna, that people become ghosts after death when they’re bound to earth by a grudge or unfinished business. Having talked with ghosts throughout her life, Eun Tak may have learned that some ghosts are sensitive about the manner of their death, perhaps it being the source of their grudge, and may not welcome mention of traces from their cause of death. Eun Tak is being thoughtful of Goblin’s feelings, assuming the sword is a reminder of the most painful moment in his life, so is careful to not bring up the fact she can see it. If you met an amputee, you wouldn’t say, “I see you’re missing a limb.” A polite adult would not speak of it until the amputee brought up the subject. Eun Tak doesn’t know her ability to see the sword is the evidence Goblin wants her to cite as proof she’s the Goblin’s Bride: she assumes what he wants her to see is one of his positive attributes.
This drama is careful to highlight that ghosts and goblins are different in Korean folklore. Eun Tak, from the first time she passed Goblin on the street on that rainy day, sensed he had a different aura than a ghost. According to the Wikipedia article on Dokkaebi: “Dokkaebi are different from ghosts…in that they are not formed by the death of a human being, but rather by the spiritual possession of an inanimate object such as old discarded household tools like brooms, or objects stained with human blood.” Kim Shin did not become Goblin immediately after his death. I don’t know what happened to his spirit after his death, but I suspect he wasn’t met by a grim reaper who guided him to the afterlife. After many years (Kim Shin’s faithful servant had grown old), the almighty–moved by prayers for Kim Shin–gave Kim Shin immortality not by reanimating his body, but by using his spirit to animate the sword (which had human blood on it, including his own), thus creating a goblin. When the sword and Kim Shin’s spirit are separated again, his spirit will be freed and able to go in peace. Eun Tak doesn’t appear to know that she has the power and responsibility as Goblin’s Bride to separate the sword from his spirit.
Eun Tak does seem to know enough about ghosts, grim reapers, and other spiritual beings to figure out that Kim Shin isn’t a ghost (he has a shadow) or a grim reaper (he didn’t immediately take her to her long-overdue afterlife appointment). In Episode 1 when Eun Tak tells Goblin, during their conversation in the library, that she’s deduced he’s a goblin, she says, “You want me to prove that I’m the Goblin’s bride?…How? Should I fly? Or change to a broom?” She knows the indispensable quality of a goblin, so she may have skipped saying what she thought too obvious: goblins are inanimate objects that are possessed by spirits, and he happened to be formed with a sword. If a person were to ask me what I see when I look at them, I probably wouldn’t begin by saying “homo sapien.” Eun Tak explained clearly why she eliminated ghost and grim reaper from consideration when trying to figure out what he is; perhaps the better question for Goblin to have asked her is, “What do you see that confirms I’m a goblin?”
@GB, I don’t think KS’s denials that he is a goblin fooled ET. She’d made careful observation and come to a conclusion based on facts and reason, and Goblin’s denial ran counter to facts and reason, so that confused her. Eun Tak was confident about her powers of deduction; what she didn’t understand is why he’d so obviously lie to her again and again.
I like how Viki translates KS and ET’s questions about each other as “what” instead of “who” are you? Who assumes humanity. What is a question that doesn’t assume that looks and true essence are the same.
I want to offer another word clarification: Grim reaper is not deity. He has supernatural powers, but doesn’t (or can’t) exercise those powers on humans “on a whim” as Goblin can. Goblin can kill (for instance, the men on the boat) and restore life (as with Eun Tak’s mother, before her spirit was escorted to the afterlife). I don’t think Grim Reaper can impulsively kill a human like Goblin can, but can gain authority over a person’s life as payment if someone breaks a contract with him. Goblin is a god, with powers to grant wishes and wreak vengeance as he wishes; Grim Reaper carries out tasks assigned to him.
@Fern @Janey
Ah that flaming sword. I did wonder at one time, why ET refused to mention the sword. It was such a huge, unmissable object and it should have been obvious that he was asking about it when he asked her what she saw on him. Of course if she’d mentioned it straightaway, we might have ended up with a series of shorter episodes, and less funny goblin frustration.
Yes, the sword would have been the means of his death, and it might have been the result of some stupidity on his part or an execution/punishment, so she was being polite in not mentioning it. She did not want to embarrass him. She was so unlike the majority of people who like to ask personal questions. We note that in the normal course of getting to know a person, (we’ll see this later pertaining to Reaper) questions and answers as to name, age, work/business, contact info, religion, hobbies and a business card are expected.
ET thought KS was a ghost, and then deduced that he was the goblin, and so did not apply those questions to him, at first. All she wanted to know if he was the goblin or not, because that had major significance for her life.
It’s both funny and frustrating (I feel the frustration along with the characters) that the first 2 episodes are just full of the 2 of them not giving the other the answer that would have shortened the series, LOL.
But it was because, despite the frustrations, KS came to save and protect ET, we get to see what’s in his heart. He kept denying her identity and denying himself his feelings, but his actions showed what was true. He still treated her as special to him. He interfered in Reaper’s job twice, to save her life.
The best part was that he somehow roped Reaper in to help save ET as well. Again, these 2 bickering guys, … while refusing to acknowledge that they were not as opposed to living in the same house as they first appeared, team up and work well together. It pretty much showed that Reaper was willing to be helpful and that KS trusted Reaper to do his job well. There was grudging mutual respect after the tableware fight LOL. I love how childish both of them are together, being great gods and all.
Someone commented that KS was 939 years going on teen years himself, in the area of relationships. He seems to have only ever had minions, servants, soldiers under him, or the king above him. He never had friends equal with him. He didn’t even know how to be sweet and warm towards his sister. Having Reaper, who was in some ways equal to him, with whom he could speak telepathically and have levitating article/food fights must have been exhilarating. LOL.
Actually, in the area of taking care of himself, and in dealing with people both dead and alive, ET was way ahead in maturity. So she never mentioned the sword.
On Protecting Goblin
Yes, @Janey, the fun in this show are the ironies. As you say, ET protects Goblin who does not need it, while she’s the one who will kill Goblin.
The other thoughts I had are that KS died and was resurrected as Goblin, and now lives but not entirely whole-heartedly, while Eun Tak who is alive and living diligently, is told that she should be dead.
@Welmaris thanks for your explanation about how a goblin is created. It makes the most sense. Although it sounds funny to say that ET fell in love with the sword animated by the spirit of a dead KS. I guess we too are flesh and bones animated by our souls, so that actually is logical too.
Thoughts on what Goblin and Reaper Do
I’d think that Goblin has the prerogative of doing what he wants without obvious repercussions, while Reaper has to mainly stick to what he is ordered to do, but when he does do his own thing, we’ll see later that he gets punished. Reaper cannot remember his past while Goblin cannot forget.
Reaper
In terms of powers, Reaper can wipe and change memories/add new narratives to modify behaviour. Goblin can’t do this. Reaper can see the past lives of people he touches, but Goblin can’t.
Similarly with Goblin, Reaper can teleport, use telekinesis, stop time, and use telepathy with Goblin.
He threatens to bring people to some place they won’t like, but he does not kill. (We later find out that being considered a murderer offends him). Goblin, however, did kill those who threatened his people.
Goblin
While Goblin can teleport away from a place to go home, it seems that to get to a particular place, he needs to choose specific doors as portals. In these earlier episodes, he seems to be able to locate ET even when she does not summon him, supposedly by thinking of her. This ability does not remain constant.
Goblin can fly through space, see a person’s future life and experiences by looking into their eyes, and so is able to predict what will happen in the future. Reaper cannot do this.
Goblin is able to stand on buildings to listen to the thoughts/prayers of humans (and possibly to find ghosts).
What they Can’t Do
Neither of Goblin nor Reaper can see through normal surfaces, like doors or walls, except for the tea-shop window that looks like a wall to human eyes. Neither of them can sense the presence of the almighty.
@Packmule3, I want to accept the challenge of looking for clues to determine the modern identities of the Goryeo king and queen. If you think it’s a good idea, will you please open a new thread for Reaper and Sunny? Thank you.
@Packmule3, we need our Episode 3 thread opened before tomorrow. Thanks!
