Enjoy the rewatch!
Thanks again @pkml3. It’s great to have the thread up so early. 🙂
Hi @GB!!! I’m finally caught up with these. I am not sure if I can come this early, but will try. =)
Thank you, @packmule3. Hello, @GB and everyone. I will try to attend tomorrow afternoon.
Always excited for rewatch! Chat with all of you soon.
Dear @GB how are you and your family, @Carolina como estás allá en Cali?, @Fern and @Janey I am excited for tomorrow’s reunion 😀 . See you tomorrow!!! 😉
Hi there everyone! It’s so lovely to see all of you this Saturday morning. I know most of you are still in Friday night or the very, very wee hours of Saturday morning.
I’m so happy to know we have a weekly reunion to look forward to.
Tonight’s episode is a zinger. This was the episode that got me wondering how much money they spent on cars (or was CGI involved?). Was it @agdr03 who likes Jung Hae In? He pops up this episode too.
@pkml3, we do hope you can drop by again and have fun with us. And of course to also give us your interesting insights… especially the Sunny = Wang Yeo paradox.
@FGB thanks for enquiring. We are all very good, and all’s well! How are you?
Yes @Janey, I’m the most excited Ahjumma on Saturday evenings. My family knows they can’t pry me away from the computer unless it’s an emergency.
@Fern, I do hope your afternoon will be a clear time for you to come and relax with us. 🙂 How are your girls doing?
Hi @Carolina! You sound like you’ve had to work hard to catch up with Goblin LOL. I trust that you enjoyed the first 6 episodes.
All lurkers are welcome too! See you in about 13 hours time!!!
Ugh! It’s bad enough that I have to get up at 4:30am to join this watch party by 5am, but my next door neighbor woke me just after 3am having a noisy conversation on her deck. Sounds echo in the canyon where my cabin in located. After I got out of bed to check where the voices were coming from, I couldn’t go back to sleep.
Let me get my tea and toast, then I’ll be back to join you.
Hello, All. I’m here for a while at least. How are all of you? @Welmaris, that would make me crazy mad.
Oh dear, poor @Welmaris! I guess rock walls around about will enhance sounds from far away. Gosh if that was a top secret conversation, it would have been broadcast LOL.
Over here our walls are literally walls of flats/apartments. Even on the high floors, sounds from below get bounced upwards so that traffic noises sound as if just outside, when the road is some 70 meters below.
Hi @Fern! It’s strange that I didn’t get notification for your message.
Glad to know you’re here! How are you and your girls?
Hello everyone!
I managed to be with you although I have a busy weekend.
I don’t know if I will be able to comment though…
Hi @Cleo! Good to see you. 🙂
Hi, @GB. We are fine. How are you?
@GB Unnie, <3
I am sleepy. I am staying because I need to decompress a bit…
Hi Everyone! It’s 9:00pm by my time. Let’s begin!!!
Just enjoying my husband’s version of pasta fagioli/fazool while waiting. Good man!
Hello @Fern !
Good to see you here! I do hope you are okay!
@Fern, We’re all very fine over here. 🙂
@Cleo, Yes, just relax and enjoy the show. No need to comment.
Love the snow over the buckwheat field!! And how it goes down and up and later stops suspended LOL.
Their frustration and disbelief over the dissolving sword leaks out of the screen.
@Fern I love Goblin’s little shocked gasp as she kissed him.
@GB,
I had a seminar until late last night and today I had to do something else and I feel drowsy.
We got our po po po po 😛
@Fern true!
LOL after the peck or sorts on the lips KS is stunned speechless and ET turns away, eyes closed but just opening a bit to give him a side eyed look.
ET : “I did this out of sheer desperation, I hope you understand.”
KS : “Open your eyes.”
ET : “I’ve already opened my eyes all the way.” ET seems to snigger, because her eyes are small.
KS : “Hey, what in the world did you just do… Are you crazy?”
ET gives him an indignant look : “How could you say that to someone who’s trying her hardest to make you pretty? You think I wanted to do that? I didn’t want to either, you know! I’m pretty sure you’ve kissed tons of people up until now but for me it was ..It was my first kiss!”
KS is speechless again.
ET : “I shouldn’t have squandered my first kiss on something like this.
She wants to try again but KS is in flight mode : “Whoa, hey, no. You can say what you need to say from there.” LOL.
ET : “I’m really desperate right now. If I can’t even touch the blade you’re probably going to tell me to cough up everything you ever gave me. So obviously I’d be willing to do anything in this situation!
KS : “What’s with this desperate attitude of yours? What are you going to do if this doesn’t work?”
ET : “If it doesn’t work this time either, I only have one other option.
KS : “What?”
ET : “True love.”
KS (seems to have mentally thrown his hands up in the air LOL) starts walking back towards the door.
KS stops and turns suddenly so that ET walks right into him and bangs her head LOL.
He stares at her and she apologises.
ET : “You even went to the trouble of making it snow.”
KS pauses time and the snow is suspended.
Seeing this ET says impressed : “Wow!”
KS accusingly : “Wow?!?”
ET : “What do I do now?”
KS : What do you mean?
ET : You’re going to kick me out
KS shouts in frustration : “I’m not going to kick you out1”
ET rebounds at once : “Really? And don’t forget that you signed this contract! They say that a man’s word is his bond! Adults shouldn’t be petty, okay?”
LOL I wonder if she still has not caught on that both Reaper and Goblin are two of the pettiest of beings and in the department of relationships, are probably less experienced than she is, although they are hundreds of years old.
Reaper sees ET trying to sneak upstairs and shouts : “What did you do?”
KS tells ET to return the perfume, bag and 5 million won. DH is indignant that KS had given ET so many things LOL.
ET tries the insincere but direct approach telling KS that she loves him. Reaper takes his cue from her, knocks DH to one side and also professes his love for KS.
Now that scares KS no end LOLOL. I love it.
The most dignified of the lot is of course CEO Yu who teases KS that he had indeed burnt the scroll.
CEO Yu rebukes KS : “You’re embarrassed, aren’t you, My Lord? Such is your punishment for having been so thorough with your goodbye.”
He promises to send back the scroll via DH. “However, My Lord, I am sorry but how about casting aside your desire to die, now and choosing to live on instead? Wouldn’t it be nice for the people of this world to experience strange and wonderful little miracles, thanks to you?”
I wonder if this had any impact on KS’s later attitude and made a difference in whether the sword could be grasped by ET or not.
I needed a good laugh…
Hanza saying I love you after hearing Eun Tak!LMAO!!!
I’ve started. Anyone else here?
Perfect music for the kiss. Goblin looks so shocked. But he must’ve liked it, because the snow started flying upwards instead of down for a few seconds.
ET is a mix of emotions: irate, proud, regretful. She’s trying her best to help Goblin, even if it means spending her first kiss on him. She complains, but I suspect she really didn’t mind.
Immediately following the kiss, Goblin has ET keep her distance and doesn’t have her try again to remove the sword, even though she’s wanting to do so.
ET is most likely correct that it requires true love to exist between Goblin and the Goblin Bride for the sword to be removed. Goblin has accused her of living in fantasy, but I think in this area she’s wiser than he is. His clinical approach to sword removal isn’t working.
Hey @Welmaris!:-)
Yes, KS gets all petty about the lack of sword-pulling. And Reaper wants KS out so the men can have fun again. ? Hahaha. KS wonders who his housemate is.
KS keeps telling ET that having her around is putting him over budget. He is being passive aggressive in punishing her by asking for expenses and removing treats and good food while having her do all of the hard work around the house.
Having failed to disappear, KS thinks back of the reason he had made the decision to remove the sword. He recalls the 29-year old ET who was as bright as ever. “But I don’t seem to be by your side.”
His reason was so that she would have a bright future without him at her side.
He recalls how she’d tried to grab onto the sword but couldn’t.
KS wonders : “Perhaps the future has changed? Or did Ji Eun Tak change? At any rate, it’s nice to be back. Truly.”
The irony is that it was actually he who had to change, because a goblin is an object that was transformed … he was the sword. At the moment he was not open to being taken by ET, or to be really generous, no matter what he said about being willing to die. He was also calculating, in the way he wanted all the gifts back.
We later see him calculating what ET owes by her living in his house.
@Fern
I enjoy the passive-aggressiveness of ET and Goblin.
Re-defining the Relationship of Eun Tak and Kim Shin
ET needs to live in the house, but if she’s not the bride, then her rights to stay on a become uncertain.
ET : “You probably think I’m not your bride, but don’t be so quick to judge. You’re really going to regret being this mean to me, later on!”
KS : “So if you are my bride, how come you can only see the blade, but cannot grab it?”
ET retorts : “I thought you said that the time you spent with me was ‘blindingly bright’. Because the weather was nice. Because the weather wasn’t nice. Because the weather was good enough.”
KS “Yes. Today too.”
ET before she heard him properly : “See… What?” She paused in surprise that he still found her bright.
KS : “Right now too. It’s blindingly bright.” (He knows that he still likes her no matter what.)
ET : “So why are you being mean to me, then?”
KS : “Because those are two different matters.”
ET and KS as Tenant and Landlord
She asks for a compromise : “Since you’re my boyfriend, and I’m the bride, I’ll be your girlfriend.”
KS says with a mean smile : “No thanks.”
ET: “How about just a friend, then?”
KS : “No thanks.”
ET : “Then your tenant?”
KS : “Then pay rent, starting today. 500,000 won per month. Water, electricity and gas not included.” He gives his most insincere smile.
Goblin immediately reverts everything to how it was before he said his goodbyes. It’s funny, but not, to see DH and Reaper wishing death on Goblin rather than giving back the credit card and house deed. ET did know that successfully pulling the sword would have meant the end of Goblin, but overhearing DH and Reaper should have given her a clue.
I love the old retainer. His advice to Goblin is spot on: “How about trying to live instead of trying to die?”
ET and KS as Enemies of the Most Petty Kind
ET is with Reaper in the kitchen
GR : “He demanded money from you?”
ET : “Yes. He’s my enemy starting today. Bitter, bitter enemies.” (She’s fed up that although KS knows how poor she is, he still demanded money from her.) “Look what I have to go through because I couldn’t touch the blade!”
But if she started packing, I’ll bet he would regret it so much.
@Fern, you’re right. She did and he did.
Don’t you just love the pettiness??? I love these scenes so much. I can listen to all three of them bickering at different times for the whole series.
Reaper and ET speak of the failed sword removal.
ET thinks of the kiss but doesn’t mention it. Unbeknownst to them, KS has come up behind and is listening. He drops a bottle of water.
KS accuses ET : “How could you just … talk about things like kissing to just anyone? That’s the kind of person you are?”
Reaper catches the word kiss. He’s shocked and upset.
ET : “I didn’t tell him. You did, just now.”
KS : “But you were about to, weren’t you?”
ET : “I wasn’t.”
GR : “You two kissed?
ET is still on KS’s case and starts to scold : “Also, this is my business I’m discussing with him. This was my kiss, anyway.”
KS protests : “Hey, there’s no ‘mine’ or ‘yours’ when it comes to kisses! And if there is, half of that kiss was mine!” (LOL can’t believe how calculating Goblin is!!!)
ET : “Oh sure. Keep your half.”
KS : “No thanks! I don’t need it!”
ET : “Then don’t. I’ll keep it all for myself.”
KS : “Oh, you’re just so greedy! Hah!”
ET : “Hmph!”
And they part ways in a huff, LOL. I just love this.
GY is dashing in blue…
ET and KS as Blackmailer and Victim
Reaper decides to test Goblin. He suggests that it’s time to kick ET out of the house.
GR : “What, you don’t want to? What I’m saying is, let’s kick her out and live a jolly life by ourselves! Just as we have up until now!”
LOL KS does not agree that he has lived a jolly life with Reaper : “Just who have you been living with thus far?” (Love Reaper’s look of endurance LOL.)
GR : “She doesn’t even seem to be the Goblin’s Bride, so I think we must kick her out!”
KS : “She knows our true identities. Who knows what she’ll say about us if we do that.”
GR : “She seemed like the type to be won over by just 5 million won.”
KS : “What did you learn from your dramas? If we relent once, we’re done for! You want her to bully you for money forever?” LOL.
Hello ladies!!
Sorry I am late!
Overslept like a dormouse. Starting to charge my stream. Sorry… how are you?
Resident and House Owner? // Would-be Killer and Willing Victim?
KS and Reaper are still arguing about getting ET out of the house or not.
GR : “You sure you’re not just saying that because you want her to stay?”
KS lies through his teeth : “Hey, of course I want to kick her out. I want to kick her out so much! ” Reaper stares at him thoughtfully.
GR accuses KS : “You’re happy that Special Case couldn’t touch the blade, aren’t you? Be honest. You’re over the moon about not dying.”
KS : “Why would I be happy about that? Are you dumb? I’ve been waiting for 900 years now! That makes no sense!”
GR is deceptively all smiles and understanding : “Fine, then. I’ll take her as a favour for a friend. You want her gone, don’t you? Since she forced a kiss on you and all?”
KS gets all shouty : “We’ve never been friends, so why are you using friendship as an excuse?” (He does not want Reaper to take ET away.) “How could you call yourself my friend when you want me to die?”
GR catches on the last part : “See? You’re totally happy right now that you didn’t die.”
Seems that Reaper has caught Goblin out on his lie.
ET and KS as Contractor and Contractee
KS in placating tone : “No, I’m not! I just have a promise that I have to keep! What am I supposed to do, when I signed a contract? A man’s word is his bond, after all! I’m just trying to keep my promise to her. Like a real man!”
Reaper comes up real close to KS’s face : “Weren’t you a real man when you gave me the deed to the house? (Then he sneers.) Huh!” (I just love this!!!)
KS finds himself being ignored as GR slinks off in disgust. LOL he calls him familiarly and sweetly as ‘Saja! Reaper!” (Trying to mitigate Reaper’s anger).
We find that it’s really the last definition of their relationship that has KS over the moon. He sits to just read the contract with a moony smile on his face LOL.
AFTER THE KISS (This was I think translated roughly by someone who can read Korean. I hope it’s right.)
“Kim Shin reads over Eun-tak’s contract and smiles giddily to himself. Most of the clauses are protective: that he won’t kick her out of the house, that he won’t forget that he’s supposed to be her lamp and watch over her until she dies. It also asks him to show up when she summons him on the first snow each year, and to act as her boyfriend until she gets a boyfriend.”
He loves the thought that ET would be waiting for him to grant her a wish at the first snowfall each year. It meant that he needed to stay alive to do this, and it meant that they had a connection.
If the translation is right, then he liked the idea of being her boyfriend too.
Yes @GB, I loved KS’s jibe about GR not learning from his dramas.
Then it’s on to the film for our leads.
Hello @FGΒ and @Kuroshio…!
Loving this song. It suits Hanza and Sunny so much!
The first time I was watching about this.
I didn’t know that they were watching “Train in Busan” where GY is the ML in there. When I found out, I laughed so much…
KS bothers ET while she tries to study.
He wants to bring up the first snowfall promise, but she thinks he wanted to speak of the first kiss.
ET : “Well, don’t feel pressured. It’s true that was my first kiss, but …”
KS is immediately embarrassed : “Hey, I was trying to bring up the first snowfall!”
ET : “Oh first snowfall. Don’t worry about it. Don’t even say anything that has the letter ‘f’ in it.”
KS : “You did that ‘first’ problem wrong.”
(LOL he said something with ‘f’ and he continues in the most childish way to keep annoying her!)
ET warningly : “I told you, stop it.
KS : “Are you a bit pecking ‘for’ a snack?’ (He used the ‘f’)
ET shouts in protest : “I told you, stop it!
KS deliberately to irritate : “Man, there are so many car horns going ‘off!’ And when you are studying too. And as ‘for’ your bed, how is it?”
She gives him a threatening look and he pretends to be innocently ignorant. I think he was attention seeking. He was already thinking of her contract and being a boyfriend.
Hi @Kuroshio and @FGB! Great to have you awake and with us LOL.
I’ve paused the episode on my end, so I’m not that far ahead. Also I’m watching it at slow speed on purpose.
IKR @Cleo! I always chortled so much over the movie date. He was terrified of the movie in which he acted LOLOL. But actually, it does seem that actors may not sit through a viewing of their own work, so maybe there’s something there.
But his OTT fear was soooo funny. I liked to slow it down and look at the expressions of the audience sitting behind, in front and next to him. LOL
I’ve got to go – too much going on. It’s been a pleasure.
I’m still at the part where they are at the bus stop. It’s very telling that this time when KS pats ET on the head, time really seems to standstill for them. They are lost in a time warp of their own and the bus comes and goes without them even noticing.
Then he calls himself her boyfriend!!! Love it!
ET and KS as Girlfriend and Boyfriend
He pats her head and they get lost in time. When they spend too much time wrapped in attention to each other, and the bus leaves without ET, he brings her to school, through a portal.
KS awkwardly : “Um it’ll seem more natural if I pat your shoulder too, right?”
ET : “I’ll …um, naturally take a look at the time now.” … “Um, did you freeze time just now?”
KS : “No.”
ET : “Oh no, oh no! I’m done for! We just wasted thirty minutes!” (Did they stare at each other for 30 minutes without feeling the time?)
KS : “Don’t worry. Did you forget? Your boyfriend is a Goblin.”
ET : “I thought you said you didn’t want to be my boyfriend!”
KS : “That was a lie. Follow me.”
He grabs her wrist and brings her to school through a door portal.
This was a significant change in their relationship, although he was still mean and petty towards her.
Goodbye @Fern! I hope you can come back to read us and comment.
@GB Unnie,
I haven’t watched Train in Busan yet, but I am might.
I agree with you on that. I guess he felt overconsious about it.
Still, he was amazing…LMAO
Finally we get a bit more story of Reaper. He finds out from DH where his building is that houses Sunny’s restaurant. He follows Sunny home and gets rid of a drunkard who’s bothering her.
It’s sad that he’s relationship with her is always many steps behind KS’s and ET’s, and literally he’s several steps behind Sunny even, rather than beside her.
And to make matters worse, he keeps scaring her without wanting to.
@Cleo
Since I do not watch zombie shows as a rule, I have not and probably will not watch Train to Busan. Heh! ‘Zombie Detective’ and ‘Happiness’ are about as closes as I want to get to zombie shows.
Jung Hae In makes a cameo…LMAO!
The Goblin is jealous!
Correction: Goblin*
Goblin and ET trying to navigate their relationship–trying to reach an understanding of their roles after the failure of the sword removal–is amusing to watch. ET knew right away that Goblin would revert to being petty, and he certainly does. She knows him well. Goblin is amusing himself pushing ET’s buttons, but she alternately tolerates him or throws his words back at him.
ET wants to work on defining her new value to Goblin. Goblin is not interested. He’s both relieved and disappointed that his life is continuing, but his thoughts shortly after returning home turned to the vision of 29-year-old ET living happily without him, and that saddened him. He values having ET in his life, but darned if he’s going to let her know that right now!
It’s interesting that Reaper also zeroes in on love being what’s missing from sword removal efforts.
I had to watch a couple of times, but I finally got it that ET doesn’t mention the kiss to Reaper. She says she did try the true love angle, then thinks about the kiss, but it is actually Goblin that says the word out loud.
The fight between ET and Goblin about the kiss, and the fight between Goblin and Reaper about kicking out ET have a lot of humor in them because everyone recognizes that Goblin is glad to still be alive. Reaper almost does a dance in front of Goblin, waving his pointed finger in front of Goblin’s face, “Hey! You’re happy right now. Because you didn’t die.”
ET making Goblin sign a contract before the sword removal effort was clever. It not only protects her interests, but gives Goblin a good excuse to keep ET by his side.
Goblin looks so happy as he’s reviewing ET’s contract. The clause that he’ll come when she summons him each year on the first snow particularly pleases him.
Thank you, English subbers, for explaining well the humorous wordplay between Goblin and ET regarding words that begin with the same sound as the Korean word for kiss.
ET is smart enough to figure out that KS’s gift giving was a farewell. She wants to know where to and if he still wanted to leave.
KS : “No. I don’t want to leave. But if my bride really appears That decision won’t be mine to make.”
ET : “Oh … right. Are you going to go together, with that ‘true bride’ of yours?”
She’s too upset to look him in the eye.
KS : “Would you let me go with her?”
ET : “No. I’m not going to let you go, so just ditch me and go. I’ll leave when your true bride appears … no, even before that. So just leave when I’m not there. Without me knowing.”
ET holds back tears. KS is watching her and knows what he means to her.
Poor Eun Tak finds that her day has again changed genre from serious for the exam, to feeling childlike exhilaration with KS,… from being happy with the cake, to disgruntled over the ruined movie and not even a bite to eat. KS is tooooo stingy and MEAN!!!
Then it’s spoilt even further when she thinks that a real bride will come along and KS would leave with someone else.
Later I’m so resentful on her behalf, that she never even got to eat the ice-cream cake that was meant to congratulate her!!!
@GB,
I haven’t seen the Zombie Detective either! But I have heard Choi Jin Hyuk sing and he is an amazing. I have seen him in Rugal though.
JEALOUS GOBLIN
KS gets thunderously angry to see ET getting on with her first love, Tae Hee. He gets all melodramatic about it, like a teenager in unrequited love.
We see the backstory of how KS had been in the batting cage next to Tae Hee as a child. He’d deliberately batted so badly that Tae Hee made a bet with him and won and so got his wish fulfilled ie no more piano lessons, so that he could concentrate on baseball.
KS had thrown his bat out wildly and it had shocked little ET so much that she dropped the flower petal she’d been holding to show Tae Hee. She grumbled bitterly at KS’s hopeless batting. “What’s with that stupid guy? How annoying!” (Little did she know that she’d end up with that stupid guy.)
KS’s ability to know the future seems to have failed him with Tae Hee… he didn’t know that by granting Tae Hee’s wish, he’d be aiding ET to meet her first love near the baseball field, and getting his panties in a twist out of jealousy LOL.
Sunny is so cool. I totally understand why Hanza is so entralled with her..
Goblin is so moved by physical touch with ET, patting her head, that he stops time for 30 minutes so he can prolong the moment. Both are awkwardly aware that simple physical contact between them is charged with deeper feelings.
Goblin admits to ET that he lied when he said he didn’t want to be called her boyfriend.
Lack of True Love
KS keeps all the ice cream cake and bluetooth speaker from ET.
ET : “You’re withholding food from me? Wow, how petty of you. Fine. Why did it rain, then? Why are you feeling glum? Huh? You’re depressed?”
KS : “Like you don’t know?”
She thinks he’s still going on about the sword.
ET : “Is this because I can’t grab the blade, then? Is that my fault? I did my best, you know. Is that blade even meant to be pulled out? I mean, kissing you didn’t work, and us saying ‘I love ‘ didn’t work. What more do you want?”
KS : “You didn’t mean it! It was an ‘I love you’ that you didn’t mean!”
ET : “What, did you mean it when you said it? I was a perfectly perfunctory ‘I love you,’ at best!” (She refers to the time he’d said it in the hotel suite before bringing her to the house.)
They are skirting around the issue of love. They are both so inexperienced in love that it still has not occurred to them that just saying the words and a kiss are not enough!
But at least they are starting to think about it. The heart of the issue of why the Sword did not materialise for ET.
ET worked hard and long to study for her college entrance exam, resisted getting the answers from Goblin (although she was very tempted), and took the test using her own abilities. It was sweet that Goblin had packed her a lunch that would sustain her through the grueling test. But when ET leaves the test site, seeing everyone else being greeted by family members, she’s sad. She misses her mother so much.
Hah! I enjoy how KS and GR make each other eat their words over and over, back and forth.
In the end they find that things only work out when they help each other, or at least are willing to. So Reaper helps KS get Tae Hee’s memories adjusted while KS gets Reaper out of the police station.
Hanza is wawtching the painting…Those tears.
I love LDW for being so emotional. He is in so much pain.
I like how Show ties together ET’s past family and her present family through the repeated sequence. On the day her mother died, ET came home physically and mentally tired, but happy with her success, after taking a school test. Her mother (as a ghost) had a real birthday cake ready for ET. When ET comes home tired after taking her college entrance exam, she finds Goblin, Reaper, and DH have pooled their efforts and resources to celebrate her achievement. They may have been drawn together in an unconventional manner, but they’re ET’s family now.
I love the Sunny phone call that Reaper could not answer LOL.
@Cleo, yes Sunny is so cool.
I love the Sunny-Reaper date.
Reaper goes for his date as if studying for a test LOL. Spouts all the answers he has prepared. And ends off “I missed you.”
Sunny is taken aback and charmed at the same time LOL.
Sunny : “Geez. Well, me too.”
GR gives the cutest smile.
She asks what he likes and what his hobbies are …
What he likes and his hobbies are all Sunny.
Poor besotted Reaper.
True @Welmaris, that cake image links the past and present families of ET.
@Cleo yes that scene of Reaper just looking at the portrait was heart-wrenching. And he didn’t even know why his heart ached so much.
After their embrace, Eun Tak could grab the sword.
When Kim Shin was in pain, she tried to take it out and he gave her a let’s say blow in order not to do it.
He saved her, but it created havoc. Now. I remembered that she will soon find out what taking off the sword really means!
LOL I’m still at the scene of Reaper’s date and how when she said if he got up she’d kill him, he quickly sat and pulled his chair in closer. So cute, all his expressions and body language.
Goblin is jealous of Tae Hee and can’t find ET. Worried that she’s out with Tae Hee, he finds out from the ghosts that ET went to work.
He is finally so attached to her that her absence bothers him enough to make him look for her.
It’s interesting that previously, KS can find ET just by thinking of her, but now he has to ask the ghosts. Does anyone have a clue why this difference?
@GB,
Lee Dong Wook made me cry the first time around when he cried in all his scenes. I know that when we will be heading to the known point, I will become emotional.
The first time aroun, I didn’t know what was happening and I had my eyes bawled out from crying.
From Goblin and on, I discovered that when you laugh so much in the beginning there will be tears along the way…
DH brings the portrait to the house and he and GR look at the painting of Kim Sun. Reaper is in tears at the sight of the woman in the portrait.
We cut to Sunny in her store. This suggests that the portrait is that of Sunny who is a reincarnation of Kim Sun.
Then we cut to the young Kim Sun of the past and how the young king stole a look at her. It is like how now GR looks at the portrait of her. The bowls on Kim Sun’s shoulders drop and break. A true bad omen.
That’s true @Cleo … when things are going nicely in a drama, is when we expect the next scenes to be sad.
After the cute scene of Reaper and Sunny on their date, we get him crying over the portrait. I believe that DH (as god) brought the portrait in on purpose at that time, when KS was out and only Reaper would be there and tempted to look at it.
God was trying to get the wrongs of the past to be addressed in the present by the reincarnations of the same beings.
Samshin is speaking to her Reaper tenant. She refers to the story of young Wang Yeo and young Kim Sun.
“It couldn’t be helped that this was the beginning of this tragic love story. This thing called fate is quite sad, isn’t it?”
From this we see that while Samshin as an old lady was recognised by GR when ET was a child, Samshin as a young woman does not seem to be known by the grim reapers.
ET is so clever figuring out some things, but think in the head about love. She knew Goblin would be petty, so protected herself by making him sign a contract. She surmised that love is needed for the Goblin Bride to be successful in withdrawing the sword. She’s even concluded from all the recent evidence that Goblin will go away after the sword is withdrawn. But she still hasn’t figured out that he’ll stop existing. Her fear is that some other woman will come along as Goblin’s bride and take him away. The thought of Goblin leaving her behind is shattering for ET. The acting KGE does in this scene is outstanding. She goes from teasing Goblin to grieving at the thought of losing him.
When he gets particularly distraught about something, Goblin ends up sulking on his bed, curled into the fetal position. This was a great battlefield general?
Lyrics of the wedding song sung by ET:
“I saw you among all those people, as countless as stars. And we recognised each other, as if we saw each other in a a dream.”
(ET sees that KS is listening and watching her from the doorway.)
“I, who was already overflowing with joy just by loving you, received love in turn. And all of that was a miracle.
No matter how much time passes, we will meet again somehow. I hope our love was fated to be. And I hope that I’m your miracle.”
The lyrics can be applied to KS and ET too … they found each other and are both each other’s miracle, totally essential for the other’s life or death.
Something has changed in their relationship. KS had been afraid to lose her and had come looking for her. ET speaks of wanting to be a family with him like it was fate.
Who says a man ruffling a woman’s hair is playfully sexy? In my opinion, it is condescending. Just sayin’
KS finds ET at the wedding singing …
This time it’s KS who takes the initiative to get close to ET. He embraces ET for the first time. He does not want her to leave. He does not want to let her go.
KS while holding ET: “I don’t think I can give you a discount (on being mean). Definitely not 50%.” He smiles to himself.
ET tries to bargain down a bit : “45%?” He laughs because he has no intention of being mean towards her anymore. He knew that we wanted to give her everything for free. He did truly love her.
But the pain of the sword suddenly hits him. The sword appears. This time she can finally hold the sword and it starts to move as she pulls. The pain makes KS push her away, which almost kills her.
KS had been the most calculating and jealous goblin ever. I’d also forgotten that he was actually once the sword ie god had allowed his spirit to infuse the sword, and it had become a goblin. That meant that to separate the sword from his body was to destroy him entirely. It also mean that when ET held on to the sword, she was holding on to him.
Grandpa Yu had suggested to KS that he could maybe stop trying to die and start trying to live.” It may have struck home with Shin.
Also, he had finally gone past just wanting ET as the Sword Remover, and started wanting to be her boyfriend. I’m thinking that it was not until Shin decided to really embrace life , as reflected in his embrace of Eun Tak, and to give without calculating, then only was he, who was the goblin sword, could allow himself to be grasped/possessed by another. It was not until he let go of his calculating attitude, when he decided that he would give ET everything for free, when he loved her, and when he was open to being the most vulnerable, that the pain and sword returned, and he could be seized and destroyed by the Goblin Bride.
Many cars are damaged by the impact of KS’s power in flying across the carpark to catch Eun Tak before she hit the truck behind her.
We hear KS’s thoughts : “So Ji Eun Tak was the one, after all. (The last couple of cars that seem to have flown into the air land bumper first behind them.) The vision of her future that I’d seen had been correct. By this child’s hand I will be able to put an end to this wretched curse of immortality now. And return to nothingness.
A mortal can only live up to a hundred years. Is the thing that I’m trying to steal one more glimpse of my own immortal life or is it your face? Ah I do believe it is indeed your face.”
KS has finally acknowledged to himself his reason for wanting to live on. From this time onwards, he really does not want to die, until the next twist came along.
@GB,
So very true. We should be prepared at one point for all those things to happen.
I agree with you this time around God tried to undo the harm done but his choice of acting is kinda strange at the same time.
I have to go for now! Enjoy the rest of the episode @GB & @Welmaris!
I will read you later! <3
Touching ET’s hair was the ‘safest’ skinship that old Goblin could engage in without it going into paedophilia LOL. So it was ‘sexy’ in that it was something, rather than nothing. He wanted to make physical contact with her, comfort her, etc, but she was such a naive young girl, he had to be careful.
Ta Ta @Cleo! See you on other threads and next week!
Kalimera @Cleo!, I am still after the conversation between Grim and Eun Tak. Loved that Nephew still loves his Uncle at the end of the day 😉 .
In the flashback to ET’s childhood meeting with oppa Tae Hee, ET has a cherry blossom petal in her hand that she calls her spring. Goblin must’ve been happy at that time while near ET to make cherry blossoms appear unseasonably. ET remembers the annoying man whose flyaway bat made her drop her flower petal, but doesn’t realize it was Goblin.
Tae Hee does suspect that the man with whom he, as a child, made a bet at the batting cage and the man who came looking for him in the college locker room are the same, not having aged over the intervening years.
ET struggles with her fear that she’s not Goblin’s type, and that he’ll cast her away…but it is Goblin who really has cause for jealousy. ET’s reconnection with Tae Hee, whom she calls her first love (crush, more like), makes Goblin livid.
Grim Reaper is brought to tears the moment he sees the portrait of the Queen. Grim Reaper cried the first moment he saw Sunny. I consider this evidence that the Queen and Sunny are the same person in two different eras.
@Welmaris, that seems logical to me. There’s also something in how he kept getting her name wrong – like a historical truth coming unconsciously.
Again we have ET showing how perceptive she is, and yet not. After sharing with Goblin that seeing wedding ceremonies drives home to her that she doesn’t have a mother, father, or friends (What? Has she already forgotten about Tae Hee?), she then says, “That’s why I was obsessing about being your bride, I think. Because it felt like I was getting a family. That family that I don’t have. Like fate, it came to me, I thought.” She still doesn’t realize that Goblin is her true love, and she is his.
It is when Goblin is amused engaging in the banter with ET–something they do because they know each other so well–that he feels pain from the sword. He suffers when his heart softens toward ET.
This time when we see the sword in Goblin’s chest, the bloody cloth wrapped around the handle is present. It wasn’t there the first time ET tried to pull out the sword, when they were in the buckwheat field. All other times we’ve seen the sword, even during the scenes from Goblin’s past, that bloody cloth around the handle has been present. (I suspect Kim Shin put that cloth there so the sword handle wouldn’t become slippery when covered with blood.) I doubt the prop people or the director would have made such a serious mistake, so there must be some meaning to the sword lacking something previously and this time being more authentic to Goblin’s experience. The sword was incomplete before, as were the conditions necessary for its removal.
So Goblin didn’t die at the end of this episode, but a lot of cars did. That had to have been done in one take. Kudos to the special effects team, not only for preparing and pulling off an epic sequence of car destruction, but for convincingly inserting the actors into it. During the moments we see cars dropping from the sky (cranes, I’m guessing, in reality) and landing behind Goblin and ET, I imagine GY and KGE were acting their parts in front of a green screen. And the invisible force pulverizing the parked cars? Of course it is supposed to be Goblin with ET wrapped in his arms to protect her. In reality, I assume they used a wrecking ball wrapped in green so they could turn it invisible in post production.
I would love to have witnessed the planning of this scene.
Director: I’d like to wreck some cars.
Producers (who hold the purse strings): Two? Three?
Director: How about twenty or more? And I want some to fall from a great height.
Producers (calculating the cost of renting multiple cranes): Um…. Director: And explosions. I want explosions.
Producers (turning pale at the thought of insurance costs): Wha… (collapse from shock)
LOL @Welmaris. I did wonder about the expenditure on the cars. The number used was excessive!!! I was thinking there might have been CGI, but would that have been much cheaper?
We’re almost at the halfway point in this drama, and I’m thinking it totally worth the time and effort to rewatch. This is an epic show, a high point in the careers of those who created it: writer, directors, actors, composers, etc.
“Capitalism is a scary yet convenient thing, Uncle Tenant” XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD
Loved how earnestly Eun Tak asked for a discount on her abuse to her tormentor. It was a beautiful moment to convey Goblin how petty and miserable he has been.
Finished the episode at last…
Congratulations @FGB on completing the episode!!! 🙂
I found it an episode so full of emotions that bounced about, mainly on Goblin’s part. All along it had been ET who’d needed KS, as symbolised in her needing a place to stay, and in her wrangling for some kind of relationship with him, even if it was just to be tenant and landlord. He thought he could still operate with her as merely a benign god who bestowed what was needed, without the commitment of the heart.
The emotional roller coaster started with their immature understanding of love, as if it was sufficient to be contractual. When ET couldn’t fulfill her end of the contract, Goblin moved into being mean, like a loan shark demanding his dues. Then when he decided he did really like ET, that the contract was something he bought into completely, Tae Hee came along and there was jealousy. Goblin became more mean and petty again.
Towards the end, he was afraid that he’d pushed her away by so much meanness, into the arms of her first love. It took the fear of losing ET to awaken KS’s understanding of how he wanted them to belong to each other, (according to ET’s contract).
He finds that she’s trying to earn more through more part-time jobs, so that she can save enough and leave the house before his ‘true’ bride comes. She asks that he gives her a discount on his meanness while she does this.
As I mentioned above, it was only when he decides with an embrace, and a smile (that ET does not see), that he will not be mean towards her anymore, that a truer love is born. By embracing ET, he might perhaps have been reacting to his being touched by her efforts to keep her end of the contract, by wanting to comfort her who had no family … but it was finally a gesture of free giving, without asking for something in return.
KS had finally moved away from seeing ET as someone looking for a handout, and started seeing her as someone worth giving his all to in her own right.
Unfortunately love brings both joy and pain – rightly, because loving people does that to us, humans. Only in the case of Goblin, the human part of him is manifested in the embedded sword. @Welmaris and I were thinking before, how the sword was animated by the spirit of KS. The sword, being only tangible thing, tainted by so much blood, took on humanity and some godliness.
Allowing ET to removing the sword, meant to be willing to be totally in her power. Removing the human from the goblin, meant returning KS’s spirit to the spiritual realm, and hence the destruction of Goblin.
@Welmaris mentioned more than once that the sword’s hilt appeared different. When it was a new, clean-looking hilt, it was not the ‘real’ sword, but an idealised version, symbolising the incorrect idea of what love is. It was only the old, encrusted, dirty, blood-stained sword that could take form in ET’s hands, once the true concept of love/humanity took shape in KS’s mind.
Dear @GB, I have yet to read all the posts here, but let me start with your last one.
Sometimes I speak to young people and give them one advice (with both sides) and one big hint:
The advice is in two parts:
A.- The front of the advice is to better oneself when young and to think what kind of person they want to be. It is true at any age, but the younger the better.
B.- Be afraid of character flaws since they become your Achilles’ Heel. Also do your best to avoid people with them and if you cannot do so, be aware of those people, their behavior and where their actions carry them.
The big hint is that Love starts (only where it begins. Not the middle nor the end, just where it starts) when someone put other people’s best interests before their own. A mother can be really mad with her offsprings but will never leave them without a roof over their heads nor without food in their stomachs. There is always something to say about loving oneself, for putting your best interests before an easy exit could be a way to adopt this principle.
What I want to say is that Eun Tak is wayyyyyyyy more mature than Goblin, has never worked against his best interests while doing what she can to protect hers. She is a wise character that strives to better herself albeit her wisdom is an ethereal one. Sunny is more sage in her worldliness. It is quite entertaining to see two immortals with lifetimes of experience under their belt being outclassed by two “girls” barely 40 when adding their ages.
And yes, watching Goblin behaving like a petulant child makes me mad, and to someone as emotionally starved like Eun Tak.
Sorry, 50 years adding both Eun Tak and Sunny’s ages 😉
@FGB as usual you astutely point out the irony that’s so beautifully presented in this Show. When we remember both Kim Shin and Wang Yeo of the past, they were great blockheads LOL. It seems their development got suspended at the level of their foolishness, and they remained stunted, never to grow in greater awareness, or wisdom, even when given a lease of ‘life’ to make amends.
I too was most aggrieved that poor Eun Tak was done out of her nice movie date (not able to enjoy the show plus no food! and he threw out her popcorn in the cinema hall!), her happy hopes for a future (he let her think he’d go off with a new bride) and her simple pleasures of having ice-cream and her bluetooth speaker, just because he was jealous and petty and childish.
Yes, I’ve always admired Eun Tak as the most mature teenager, deserving of so much better treatment than Goblin gave her. I felt that he deserved the loss of ET as punishment for his treatment of her. It sort of finally made him grow up.
It’s long after we finished today’s rewatch, but since I can’t watch and write commentary and read others’ comments all at the same time, I’ll take this opportunity to say hello to @GB, @Fern, @Carolina, @FGB4877, @Cleopatra, @Janey, and @Kuroshio!
@Fern, I heard noise coming from next door while doing my Goblin rewatch, so my neighbor and her friends must’ve continued to party ’til dawn. Then I noticed her car was gone around 9am, and I know she works on Saturdays (she owns a dog-grooming business): I can imagine how badly she was dragging today. In the year I’ve been coming up to my cabin, she hasn’t done this before, so I’ll give her a pass this time. I want to keep our relationship friendly, as she’s a full-time resident and able to keep an eye on our place when we’re not here.
@Fern, I found it odd that Goblin would complain repeatedly about the cost of keeping ET in the house, since he is massively wealthy, but he knows that for ET counting every won is a big deal. He’s poking her where it hurts. After her mother died, ET was essentially enslaved by her aunt and two cousins in return for their putting a roof over her head, so ET is familiar with working to earn her keep. Still, there was a jarring difference in how Goblin treated her before and after the failed attempt to remove the sword. ET counted on Goblin having developed some affection for her as a roommate, and trusted him to adhere to the contract, so she did feel she had some room to fight back against Goblin’s pettiness. Their relationship became humorously dysfunctional, with ET feeling like she was getting the worst of it, but in truth Goblin was hurting himself the most by driving her away. If Goblin had been less petty and more welcoming, I don’t think ET would consider moving out.
Goblin doesn’t say openly that ET’s first kiss with him in the buckwheat field was also his first, but to me it seems obvious because he’s as obsessed and embarrassed about it as she is.
@GB, after reading your scene summaries, I’ve decided that I prefer the English translations on Viki over Dramacool (assuming that’s where you’re watching). To me it seems the translations you’ve transcribed are less literal and more in the spirit of what is being said, perhaps taking some liberties. For instance, Reaper calling ET Special Case instead of Miscellaneous Omitted. One sounds more positive than the other. There’s a bit more humor in the term miscellaneous omitted, because it hints at trivial annoyance and infers a living soul was overlooked.
People generally think of Gong Yoo playing romantic leads or action roles, but there was a lot in this episode that solidified my high opinion of Gong Yoo as a comic actor, especially with physical comedy. The movie theater scene is iconic for its layers of humor, but I also got a kick out of watching Goblin ineffectively flailing away in the batting cage. (We later see Goblin in a different batting cage, successfully connecting bat with ball. Either he was putting on a show so young Tae Hee could win a bet with him and get his miracle, or the ever-competitive Goblin followed that incident by spending a lot of time in batting cages learning how to bat properly.)
I noticed that one man appeared three times in this episode: 1) riding a bicycle and almost bumping into Goblin, then berating him, after Goblin took ET to the portal to her college entrance exam; Goblin saw that the man’s future included his being hit by a car. 2) When Goblin and ET were at the claw machine in the arcade, that man walked behind them, pausing a moment to look them over. 3)He bumps Reaper’s shoulder as GR heads to his team dinner; Reaper soon after discovers that he’s been pickpocketed and his wallet is gone.
I just want to say that the cinematography was excellent while capturing Goblin and ET’s run from the bus stop to the portal. We get to see them from behind and from in front (so we can see their smiles), from up close and from afar. It must’ve required multiple takes with a variety of camera setups (including tracking). Well done director, cinematographer, and actors! Then all that footage was beautifully pieced together to tell a story. Well done editor!
@GB, since you said you were highly entertained while carefully watching the movie theater scene, did you notice the poor fellow to Goblin’s lower right (lower left on our screen)? A flying piece of popcorn landed inside his glasses! He couldn’t keep himself from cracking a smile for a split second.
@Cleopatra, I agree that the acting LDW did as Grim Reaper viewed the Queen’s portrait was phenomenal. Watching him made my heart ache too.
@GB, I recognize that Goblin stoking ET’s hair has twice been a special form of physical contact for them. The hair ruffling I found a bit condescending was when oppa Tae Hee did it moments after reconnecting with ET.
@GB, if I were a prop manager and needed to find cars to wreck, I’d probably go to a wrecking yard and look for vehicles that looked undamaged from at least one angle. Other ways to get cars to wreck while filming is donations from automobile manufacturers, purchase of high-mileage (thus low-cost) vehicles, or flood-damaged vehicles. You called the number of cars wrecked by Goblin excessive, but that was child’s play compared to these: https://www.carthrottle.com/post/top-9-movies-that-killed-the-most-cars/
Episode 7 is bookended with two scenes of Goblin, Eun Tak, and sword removal. We start with Eun Tak not being able to grip, much less remove, the sword. We end with Eun Tak being able to seize the handle and begin to pull the sword out of Goblin, only to be violently stopped by Goblin.
We don’t know why the sword was visible, but not tangible, during the first attempt, so we don’t know the reason for the failure of that planned effort. We spend the episode watching Goblin entertain doubts and disappointment as he blames ET, while at the same time becoming more emotionally attached to her. We watch ET steeling herself for possible rejection by Goblin, while doing what she can to protect her place in her new home and retain some positive value in his eyes.
The second sword removal attempt happened spontaneously: ET saw Goblin in pain, felt concern for him, and wanted to help relieve his agony. The pain Goblin felt may have been sparked by his having tender feelings for for ET, the real sword may have appeared because Goblin’s affection for ET was sincere, ET may have been able to grip the sword because she had sincere fondness for Goblin (himself, not just what he could provide her to make up for what she lacked in her life), and ET may have been able to successfully pull the sword because of her sincere concern for Goblin’s well-being.
The failure of the second sword-removal attempt is all on Goblin. Not wanting to die right then and there, Goblin pushed ET away with so much strength that he could have killed her.
Dear rewatchers! Sorry for ditching our Saturday date! I got my vaccine booster shot the previous day and the effect to me was lethargy and sleepy state. So I was not able to wake up early and slept thru my alarm. And I had to rush for an activity the rest of the day, then church and choir in the evening since we are back en force. It’s been the longest that I did not peek at BoD! But I’m feeling so much better after this long snoozes 😴! Anyhow, hope to do a rewatch catch up and will comment on this episode soon! Will read up as well. Cheers and hope everyone is doing well. I feel the Christmas season rush last year.
Hi @Janey
I hope you’re feeling like normal now. Yes, I did miss you, but no worries. I hope you get to rewatch Ep 7, read our comments and enjoy yourself! Let me know what you think of my conjectures. 🙂
@Janey, was your booster the same as the two previous COVID vaccines you’d received? I’m getting my booster tomorrow. I chose to get the Moderna booster even though I got Pfizer before. People I’ve talked to who’ve done the same ended up getting knocked down for 24 hours, even with the half dose.
Kalimera @FGB! I just saw that you talked to me on Saturday, but I had already left from the conversation.
I am okay. How are you?
@Janey!
Are you feeling better? I just read your comment!
@Welmaris I do hope you are okay as well!
*Hugs*
Thanks @GB! Back to normal but still a lot of activities. The viewing/funeral of my friend is Mon/Tues and we are helping the family with the preparations. Big sigh…
Hi @Welmaris! I got moderna for my first 2 and same with booster. I was the only one feeling the lethargy vs hubby and daughter. But I’m goo now. Glad it was the weekend and I was able to sleep in. Hope yours will be a non-event. Take care!!!
Thanks @Cleo! Feeling so much better and hopefully more protected. Ready or not, Monday is here. Hope your arm is better? Take care!
Hey my agapimeni @Janey!
I am glad you are feeling better. My arm is better, I had some minor issues with my hand. It has humidity, so I get it. Still I am trying to rest it as much as I can!
Take care as well! <3
@Welmaris, my husband and I had Moderna as a booster, rather than A-Z which was our first 2. On the night and day afterwards we both had chills, fatigue, brain fog and some body ache. He had it worse than I – I only had a very mild reaction. We’ll see how my elder daughter fares today – she had her booster yesterday.
@Cleo, I hope that your arm and hand are completely better soon.
@Janey, I’m glad you are feeling better. My thoughts are with you as you help with the funeral preparations for your friend. May it be as much as possible a celebration of the good times in their life.
Hey @Fern!
Thank you! I am glad to read that you are feeling better after your booster shot.
Take care okay?
Thanks @Fern for the warm thoughts.
On the vaccine and boosters, it’s interesting how each body has a different reactions. Hope the hubby feels better and your daughter will just breeze thru it like you did. Take care!!!
Thanks, Janey. Daughter had some mild symptoms like I did and husband is all better.
I’ll pray for your friend and the family and community around them.
@Janey, I imagine you are a great comfort to your friend’s family.
Dear @pm3, @GB, @Cleo, @Welmaris, @Janey, @Nrllee, @Fern, @Kuroshio, @FGB4877 hope you are all well and enjoying your week. I am so sorry for missing this rewatch. Realistically I think I have to stop. I am not able to rewatch or catch up properly. I get excited by reading your posts so I get drawn back in, but it’s time to pause. I might still lurk of course =)
Thank you all for such a great experience. I’ll be in the look out for any other rewatch.
