Incidentally, we are establishing a new company which is a subsidiary of a South Korean conglomerate and the transition has been eating up a lot of my time. I hope I’ll be rewarded with travel to SK in the future! Wouldn’t that be nice? Sigh, I miss business trips and trips in general.

@Fern, it was cold this week. Yesterday and today, is a bit better, but from tonight we are waiting for a new Frost Wave that it will bring snow to the islands like Cyclades in the Aegean Sea and even downtown Athens. We usually don’t get snow.
The good thing is that since we know it, I am not going to go outside during the weekend. But still, some will and I pray that everything will be okay. We are going to get 0 degrees Celcius and up in the north it will be even below than that, but I cannot say the exact temperature.

I just read that Cotton stems used as flowers have the meaning of familial (mother’s) love, so that explains the bouquet at school. The bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums means rejected love. This is the meaning in K-dramas, but not necessarily in other cultures.

We have Deok Hwa speaking as god… he seems to be in god role and willing to give info (not necessarily the truth) whenever he’s with ET and she’s talking or asking him things. There’s only this as a special relationship between god and the goblin’s bride.

@Fern It looked like Goblin felt bad for neglecting his sister and was trying to make up for it, while trying to get her to remember.
ET educates Sunny on the 4 lives of reincarnation. This is the only show I know that elucidates the lives. ET is very diplomatic. She only tells Sunny the nice conclusion to a death due to betrayal.
Yes!! Agree @gb and @cleo DH totally speaking as God. Still mad I missed this part of the drama. Lol
So from the 4 lives chat, we get a series of reveals starting with Sunny finding out that her part-timer lives with 2 men in a huge house.
Then the reveal about herself as sister to KS in a previous life, as queen. ET notes at once that Sunny was waiting for a king, most appropriately.
ET again is the mature and diplomatic one, to leave KS and Sunny to chat alone.

I like that ET was the mediator in order Sunny and Kim Shin to talk.

I watched LDW last night in Episode 10 of Bad and Crazy, and now in Goblin. I watched Yoo In Na two nights ago in Snowdrop. Such different characters they are playing currently!
Sunny has no recollection of her past life. But she does remember that Goblin and Grim Reaper owe her money for the sweet potatoes!
Even after overhearing Goblin’s retelling of his sister’s and his story during the Goryeo era, ET doesn’t figure out the connection between Goblin and Sunny. She’s jealous of all the time Goblin is spending in Sunny’s presence. Deok Hwa sets ET straight, telling her that Sunny was Goblin’s younger sister in their past life.
Along with ET’s feelings of jealousy, there are all sorts of other uncomfortable feelings. Sunny is skeptical about having had a past life, and she’s still wanting to keep her distance from Grim Reaper because she doesn’t want to get dumped. Goblin doesn’t want Grim Reaper to date his sister. ET is uncomfortable on Grim Reaper’s behalf watching Goblin trying to establish a relationship with Sunny.
@Cleo, So heavy lol and unromantic. At least he didn’t say she’ ugly.
So early on, the king already suspected that poison was being served to members of the royal household. He knocks the medicine so that the queen does not get possible poison.
But then, he gets her shot with an arrow for being loyal to her brother and to the truth.
Poor Sunny starts getting more affected by her past life. Now she gets a pain in the site of the arrow wound, and she gets ill from a deep sadness that affects her body.

If only the king had explained himself to her. As it was, it looked like she had needed some medicine and the king didn’t want her to get well and feel better. The opposite effect of what he was trying to do.
I like those scenes where KS and Reaper sit side by side and chat. They don’t have to look at each other. What a good bromance.
The painting contains, grudges, guilt and yearnings. This is somewhat like the ring that also contains the owner’s resentments, grudges, etc.
ET has sixth sense that her boss will not be well after hearing all the supernatural info fromKS.

@Fern, now in this life, queen Sunny really is sick and fortunately it’s ET who’s with her. They will pass by another grim reaper and ET protects her by covering her eyes from his gaze.
The pain hurts deep inside. Sunny : “It feels like someone is walking over my heart. It feels like my heart is falling to pieces.” Poor Sunny is reliving the painful parts only of Kim Sun’s life, when the king walked all over her heart in betrayal.
Oh how I like this graduation scene.

Yes, @Cleo. SHe bundled her up in her warm parka and took her home. They run into the junior GR. Sunny must have heard what he said about the Goblin’s bride. She asked about it when she was in bed.

@Carolina, Sunny is an adult compared to queen Kim Sun who was much younger. So Sunny is more confident, able to speak her mind and in the modern day, is ‘rude’ compared to the quiet and elegant queen. She’s the same in how she will stick to her principles regardless of where her heart wants to lead her.

Lots of discussions On reincarnation, it’s interesting what ET said that it happens 4x and the seed analogy. And then KS said some people retaining the same face (like the teacher) so it’s easier to know. But the expectation that one should behave the same or remember past life seems unrealistic. It’s just funny how KS keeps questioning if Sunny is indeed his sister or not.
Samshin has such a commanding presence that everyone pauses to watch her.
I saw similar looking cotton flowers at a supermarket and was tempted to buy them LOL.
So here’s my homework.
I liked the graduation scene and wondered the reason for cotton flowers were given. I’ve never seen someone give cotton flowers.

Still she counts her blessings – good things come late, like KS. She knows how to be grateful despite all her difficulties.

The yellow chrysanthemums had a meaning too that I mentioned above. They mean rejected love.
“That the person named Kim Sun was a very brave person in front of love.” ET doesn’t want to tell Sunny the tragic end of her past life, so only highlights the positive.
I had forgotten this happened in the show, but I’ve been wanting Sunny to come visit Goblin’s house. Goblin and Grim Reaper are stunned when the doorbell rings and she enters with ET.
Sunny wants to get the the truth in this situation that confuses her. She suspects Grim Reaper and Goblin are teaming up to play a prank on her.
It is sad that although they loved one another, Kim Shin did not get to see his sister Kim Sun in person. He, being sent away to die by order of the king, Kim Sun’s husband, could only receive Kim Sun’s loving care via letter.
“News of Kim Shin’s victory gets spread around the streets intentionally and the people who are foolish are getting fooled each time. And that’s all there is to a military official’s resentment. Do not tell him that he’s great. The dignity of the royal family is kicked to the streets. I worry about your sister’s safety. Send that message.” These are the words of Tutor Park, poisoning King Wang Yeo. Just in the way he phrases things, he suggests:
–Kim Shin is lying.
–On purpose Kim Shin is spreading rumors among the citizens.
–Those who approve of Kim Shin are fools. (So the King would be a fool if he is pleased by Kim Shin’s victories.)
–The only reason Kim Shin is winning battles is to feed his own resentment, not in service to the king.
–Kim Shin’s military victories reflect poorly on the royal family.
–Kim Sun is in danger because of the news of Kim Shin’s military accomplishments (or will be, because Tutor Park suggests such a thought to the king).
Wang Yeo becomes angry as he hears Tutor Park’s words. He believes his old tutor without question.
Kim Sun tries to support her husband by being in the background as he practices archery or studies, but must wait for him to come to her. She can’t approach him at her own will, it seems. And Tutor Park has warned Wang Yeo to not keep a tight hold on his queen. Wang Yeo prevents the Queen from receiving the most basic health care, tonics, from the royal doctors. Because he conveys that command angrily, not lovingly (as if he’s concerned she’ll be poisoned), we know he doesn’t want to do anything that will prolong her life.
The king comes to believe that only one can live: him, or Kim Shin. He questions the Queen’s loyalty: which of the two does she want to live? The king is angry, because in his mind she has nothing to lose. He doesn’t see that Kim Sun would be devastated to lose either. She’s been setting her heart to love the king, despite his spurning her. She is loyal to him, so loyal that she speaks an unhappy truth to him: his lifelong tutor and father figure is his enemy, not her or her brother. Wang Yeo does not welcome that truth.
@Janey, that investment topic reminds me of Back to the Future, when a character was advised about pantyhose as becoming a big thing.
@Fern – how sad that the first time GR gives flowers to a lady, it’s the yellow chrysanthemums with meaning of rejected love.
KS speaks to ET. She’s concerned that the death card is for KS, but he tells her truthfully that it is hers.
KS : “I’m telling you this now because I don’t think I should keep it a secret anymore. You will die if you don’t pull out my sword. Such is your fate as the Goblin’s Bride. If you don’t remove the sword, death will continue to seek you out. Just like this.”
ET : “So if I don’t pull out the sword, I’ll continue to face death until I actually die? Forever and ever?”
KS nods. ET figures out that all the accidents were linked to this and KS admits that her kidnapping, the ski resort accident, the accident that was supposed to happen on the day of her interview and when KS almost killed her were the case of death looking for her.
ET : “God truly is cruel to Ahjusshi and to me.”
ET cries to herself : “What a cruel fate.
Scenarios:
1) ET offers to die. Ahjusshi would live on and she would reincarnate and see him again. He would have to stay put where she could find him. She promised to find him.
2) Ahjusshi should die. ET offers to pull out the sword. “You’ll have to live by yourself forever if I die, right? You may never have another bride appear again.” Like Samshin says, it will be for the best.
3) They could die together at the same time. No one would be left behind.
KS asked her to believe in him that he’d prevent her death. He apologised for dragging her into his horrible fate and promised to never let her go.
It’s so sad. I feel for ET. Now it’s her turn to be shocked by all these revelations. I like the show’s reversal of the secret trope where instead of the secret being hidden until the end, it’s revealed to the one who needs to know.
Sunny is so brilliant. She took that cherry branch and hit the air and Hanza’s hat and that made him visible to her human eyes…
These were my comments in 2017 when I first watched the show.
“Once again, doing something differently, Goblin (the show) incorporated (for the first time in my viewing experience) a proper explanation by the protector who’s in the know, to the one to be protected, of the consequences of destiny as the Goblin’s bride. When the right time presented itself, he did not shy away from the revelation but made it clear the terrible choices before them. It’s so refreshing and a relief.
And it’s also so on pointe that Eun Tak then has the agency to make choices, that she tries to justify each with Shin and that we examine all the alternatives with her and understand exactly what is going on. I do like that we are not always left in doubt, to fill in the gaps ourselves. By the time we see Eun Tak going back to work as her usual upbeat self, it is with the understanding that, that ‘peace of mind’ was dearly earned.”

I like how mature ET is. She goes to work as per normal and planned to live every day as usual.
ET : “Ahjusshi keep protecting me like your life depends on it, and I’ll try my best not to die.” (Basically this is what we do on a daily basis anyway, right?)
She is so positive in the face of a terrible fate. She says she has so much to live for and he was the biggest reason for wanting to live. He warns her against going to high places. He’s like a nervous parent.
Romantic moments: She keeps summoning him for any little ‘dangerous’ situations. It keeps him on his toes. He ends up making the cherry blossoms bloom and fall when she says she missed him so much it was dangerous, LOL. Loved all those scenes of him being summoned.
@Cleo, it seemed a lucky stroke since it was his hat that kept him invisible. And ironic that it was the cherry blossom branch that his friend Shin had caused to bloom. But the air is clearing between the Sunny and GR.

@Cleo, I agree, Sunny had become good at sensing Reaper. She must have been a bit nervous but she put that cherry branch to good use. I think there is a belief that the cherry branch can ward off spirits or evil or something, so she swung it around the approximate height of Reaper.

@Cleo I was so angry with that thoughtless ghost. So selfish, so inconsiderate that ET is human and alive. She never even apologised to ET. She only apologised to KS because she was afraid of him. Seriously!!!

This was about the only instance of ET’s foolishness. How could she follow a strange man outside on the outside of the building, especially after having been warned to stay away from heights. I guess the presence of 2 ghosts, made her forget that she could be in danger any time.

All secrets are revealed and at least now ET knows the implications of pulling/not pulling the sword and sad fate of hers tied to KS – cruel indeed. We see the embrace in the picture from PM3’s post above. Ah, my heart is breaking. I feel like I need a hug too!
@Cleo, now that is one scary looking character. I was so repulsed by his purple tongue!!! What a note on which to end the episode!
Sunny is such a sensible, sensitive person. I love that she wants to deal head-on with the situation making everyone uncomfortable: her possibly being the reincarnation of Kim Shin’s sister. She goes to Goblin and learns from Kim Shin, himself, the story of Kim Sun. Her motivation to speak with Goblin: “I’m saying this because you know I don’t believe it [that she’s the reincarnation of Kim Sun, Queen of Goryeo], but it’s not that I don’t believe in past life, but I came because of the persimmon, shoes, and clothes [gifts Goblin gave Sunny]. Not being able to give her things of that sort, I wonder if it left a deep regret in you. And I am sure that you have gone mad, but I feel as though you’re reasonably insane. So I feel a little bad.” She has a compassionate heart for Goblin. Even though she doesn’t believe his story, she believes his emotions are true and affirms them.
Sunny is mildly disappointed Grim Reaper didn’t come to see her off, but he’s waiting for her outside the house. Sunny asks his intentions. Does he want to hold her? [This could be interpreted in both ways, holding her in a hug, and holding onto their relationship.] “If you do [hold onto me], then what happens to us next?” She walks away because Grim Reaper doesn’t answer her. It could be he’s silent because he doesn’t know the answer, how far a relationship can go between a grim reaper and a human. It could be he’s feeling shame because he can’t remember his own name and past, so fears he has little to offer Sunny.
Episode ended for me.
Now, I know what we are waiting for. Oh Lord… 🙁

Oh, he is a creepy ghost compared to the others. They don’t seem concerned or are maybe not aware? I shall have to check out ep. 12’s beginning, I guess. His decaying hands and the way he licks his lips. Euwwwwww.

BTW, I looked up snow in Greece and found photos of a couple of years ago when there was a heavy snow even on the Acropolis. But nothing current yet.
That ghost scared the heck out of me first time around. Hate creepy ghosts. This one was so gross.

Goblin: Kin Yeo did. Although it’s my sister’s appearance, it’s the way he saw her. His sorrow, sins, and longing are encompassed in that painting. I feel as though that could have been…his last act…

Goblin: Yes, after he did all that.
It sounds like Goblin has some compassion for Wang Yeo, not defining the king solely by the mistakes he made and the pain he caused. Goblin recognizes that before his death, Yang Yeo was repentant.
Grim Reaper, not remembering that he’s Want Yeo, on seeing the old portrait of Kim Sun still inexplicably felt the emotion he experienced when painting it: sorrow, guilt, longing. He cried, and felt pain in his heart.

Sunny can’t intellectually accept the truth about her past life and reincarnation, but her body responds to the revelation. She aches as if she’s sick, and her heart is especially affected. “There isn’t anything…but it keeps hurting here. No…somewhere deeper, it hurts. A heartless someone…is walking in my heart, so it feels like my heart is sinking…” Kim Sun died before she could process grief. Now that her past life is awakening in her, Sunny is feeling the heartache that comes with deep grief.
Their world really is so small! Sunny lives downstairs from the handsome grim reaper, which means both of them have Sam Shin as their landlord!

We now know, after watching The Red Sleeve, why Sam Shin gave Eun Tak a bouquet of cotton bolls for her graduation. Cotton is the most beautiful flower because of its usefulness to people, rich and poor alike.
So it seems the question is answered, whether Kim Shin and Eun Tak crossed paths in the far-distant past. Eun Tak worked as a server in a Goryeo food stall, but she had the face of her high school homeroom teacher. Eeesh!
In true Kdrama seesaw fashion, we go from the high of Eun Tak’s high school graduation to her death namecard being delivered to Grim Reaper.
When Goblin tells Eun Tak the truth about her destiny as the Goblin Bride, that she must either pull the sword and end his life or be killed herself, she has the same reaction he had: “God…is so harsh to both you and me.” “This darn fate…” Like Goblin has done since he met her, she wrestles with all the options and their tragic consequences. She cannot see a happy ending, so she’s trying to find the one that’s least sad. We do get foreshadowing of Goblin waiting while Eun Tak dies, reincarnates, and finds Goblin in her next life. This was the first scenario ET considered as a solution to their fate. ET also considers removing the sword so Goblin will die, in case another bride doesn’t show up in the future. Her third consideration is for them both to die, together, without leaving someone [presumably a child] alone when they’re gone.
Goblin speaks comforting words: Ji Eun Tak, look at me. You won’t die. I will make it so that you won’t die. I will prevent it. I will prevent it all. I’m sorry. For getting you entangled in this fate. But we must pass this to go on. I don’t know what door will open, but I will not let your hand go. I promise. So believe in me. I might be a bigger person that what you thought.
I love that Goblin promises Eun Tak that their love will continue beyond death. “We must pass this to go on…I will not let you hand go.” They will be together through, then beyond, this tragic fate. The open door Goblin mentions may be to the afterlife, but Goblin promises to cross that threshold with Eun Tak.
Optimistic, Eun Tak refuses to cower in fear in the house for the two weeks leading up to her scheduled death by falling. She treasures the life she has, and wants to live it fully. She also enjoys having Goblin on call for her at all times, making him appear at her side for non-lethal situations. She admits she misses him so much it hurts, so must call him. This makes Goblin very happy.
Eun Tak, you promised Goblin that you wouldn’t go up somewhere high, since you know you’re scheduled to die by falling. So why do you forget so easily? What are you doing up on an exterior stairway with nothing between you and a several-story fall but a flimsy railing? And with a man who’s a stranger to you, at that? You’re not keeping your promise to do your best to protect yourself.
Goblin is angry that Eun Tak thoughtlessly put herself in danger. But I like the way they talked it out.
ET: You’re still mad? I’m sure you’d be mad. You should be mad. [She validates his feelings.]
Goblin [turning, and pulling ET into an embrace]: I’m not mad. I was only worried. [Strong fear can cause anger as a defense mechanism.]
ET: But why do I feel like I’m getting scolded. My heart feels like it’s stinging. [This could be from guilt and self-recrimination. ET knows she messed up.]
Goblin: Not as bad as mine. I don’t know how many times I went to hell and came back within one hour. [Foreshadowing?]
ET: Seriously. We are so pitiful.
Goblin: No.
ET: Really. Are we unfortunate then?
Goblin: No. [I imagine he is feeling grateful for many things.]
ET: Then…Mister, about you scolding me…is it done, then?
Goblin: No. [He’s back to teasing her, and ET’s smile shows she knows it.]
ET: When I’m a college student, I’m going to go on lots of meeting dates and wear only super short skirts. [She skewers Goblin in his weak point: jealousy.]
We see Grim Reaper’s other Miscellaneous Omitted, Tutor Park. He wasn’t afraid of Grim Reaper during an encounter 20 years ago. [Eun Tak was born 20 years prior, so was their meeting coincidental with the arrival of the Goblin’s Bride?] Perhaps Tutor Park isn’t afraid of Grim Reaper because he knows he was able to easily control Wang Yeo.
Tutor Park is clothed as he was at the time of his death in the Goryeo period, in the mourning clothes of a court official following King Yeo’s death. His hands look burned and bloody, but they weren’t like that in the moments before he died. Perhaps he was burned by the Goblin’s fire, since Goblin strangled him to death. That may also be why Tutor Park’s tongue is now blackened. Or his tongue may look so foul because of all the foul words that came out of his mouth while he lived. His licking his lips makes me think of a snake flicking its tongue to sense its prey. As Tutor Park moves, his joints crack as if he’s a dry husk.
Eun Tak has said she’s met many ghosts who knew of her identity as the Goblin’s Bride, even before she met Goblin herself. So Tutor Park addressing ET as the Goblin’s Bride in itself isn’t shocking. But ET goes from calm to alarmed as Tutor Park greets her. She senses menace.

Besides the company, one of the other reasons for this rewatch being so much fun for me is because I watched Goblin during the early days of my k-drama watching. I used to confused characters all the time especially for the period pieces and missed a ton of details. I just didn’t know how to watch nor a lot of cultural context, which I’m still learning. Until this blog and all of you ladies it has made my drama watching much better.

I just read your comments. Kim Shim hasn’t crossed paths with Eun Tak before. In Joseon what happened is that he saw the future of that server that became in her next reincarnation Eun Tak’s teacher.
He basically saw ET’s graduation and a glimpse of Eun Tak, but he didn’t know it was her, his Dokkaebi Simbu!
If you don’t remember then we will find out later on, that for Eun Tak this is her first life. 🙂

Yes, Cleo is right. KS managed to get a glimpse of the eyes of the teacher, which showed him her past life. She was serving KS at a tavern.
This is interesting, because I thought KS usually only sees if a person has a future and how it goes, but with this teacher, (or maybe with all those living their 2nd, 3rd, 4th lives) KS is able to see their past life.
Conversely, he recalls that when he was in Joseon, he had met the serving lady and he had looked into her eyes and seen her future life. In that future, there was a glimpse of Eun Tak, but he didn’t know that she would be his bride (as Cleo says).
So he saw his first love in his past after all and he infuriatingly teases ET that his first love was seen in the Joseon era, so of course ET thinks it’s someone else.
I agree with you, @Growing Beautifully. KS saw the teacher and recognised her as the one in a hundred who keep the same face in reincarnation. This made him think back to where he saw her before (since he remembers everything). He was eating with his assistant and mentioned that he was now seeing people’s futures into their next lives, even past the Joseon era. The vision he had of the server’s future included a tiny and slightly obscured glimpse of ET.
I’m so glad that Sam Shin called the teacher out on her destructive and hurtful methods and habits. That teacher crumbled completely faced by Sam Shin’s questions.
@Fern, in that scene of the teacher crumbling, Samshin brought all her age and presence to bear in rebuking the ‘naughty child’. The way she called the teacher ‘child,’ held so much authority.
I find it funny that Samshin is dignified, visible, hard-working, young and impressive, while the so called almighty, (whose title makes him sound like he’s higher in rank), is merely manifested in a butterfly or in a lazy kid. He chooses to inhabit the easily dismissible, ‘obtuse’ and self-indulgent Deok Hwa, in order (I guess) to never be discovered until he revealed himself.
Although he had more presence in the lives of the protagonists, since he kept popping up, he had less presence as a force of power. The best joke was that he was kept relatively broke by a human granddad.
Compared to goblins, grim reapers, ghosts and Samshin, the almighty who was supposed to be the one overall in charge of their fate, (and in fact of everyone’s fate), was well nigh invisible to our protagonists.
There is however a strange correlation between god inhabiting the young and powerless even in the Judeo-Christian faith. Isn’t that interesting?

Thanks to those who set me straight about Goblin catching a glimpse of Eun Tak in the eyes of the Joseon-era food server. So it wasn’t the food server herself that Goblin called his first love. This is the same type of revelation Goblin got in Quebec when he looked into the eyes of the waiter in the steak restaurant and saw adult Eun Tak greeting a CEO. Maybe Goblin only receives far-distant visions if they relate to his bride, Eun Tak.
This is one of the nuances of world building by the show’s writer and PD that completely escaped me the first time I watched Goblin. This second time around I noticed, but misinterpreted. If it weren’t for you, my rewatch friends, the full impact if those scenes would still escape me. I’m glad I’m on this journey with you!
I was confused about this “first love” in Joseon as well when I first watched it. But what set me straight was the waiter at the steak restaurant in Quebec with whom he saw through ET in her 30’s waiting for a man. Same Thing happened with the teacher since she retained the same face and easier to connect the past given that.
It’s nice to discover these nuances with our rewatch! 😉

@Fern, I first saw and researched the throwing of salt while watching You Are My Spring. Our beloved psychiatrist’s nurse-receptionist tossed salt after his ex-wife left the office. We see the same reason for tossing salt in Our Beloved Summer, to ward off the evil spirited ex.
