Business Proposal: Eps 1 & 2 Open Thread

The thread is open for spoilers and discussion.

I don’t care if this show is shallow as a kiddie pool. I just need antidote for my growing pessimism. Hopefully, this drama isn’t going to glorify kink in the office. Honestly, I’m more in the mood to deliver a kick-in-the-butt in my office. lol.

The second couple in the green poster looks familiar. She’s the unnie in “True Beauty”  (correction: the mean concubine in “Mr Queen”) and he’s the male friend in “Because It’s My First Life.” I assumed he’d be the next breakout star, but his follow-up drama, “Queen: Love and War” was a dud. Maybe he wasn’t ready to be the main lead then.

The drama starts tomorrow, February 28. It’s on Netflix. Two new episodes per week and it’s only 12 episodes long. Is this a new trend? I like that. Sometimes we don’t need 16 episodes to drag the plot.

Let’s enjoy the show.

Thanks @pkml3. I forgot that this show is starting today!! Yes, 12 episodes are better if there’s not much plot. Another bright and breezy show, I trust! 🙂

  2. Yes, I want it upbeat and quick.

Wasn’t Yumi’s Cells 12 episodes too? Or did they lengthen it to 14? 16?

With 12 episodes, the screenwriter and director are forced to pare down the extraneous side stories. I don’t know what the second couple can possibly add the show but I think they’re part of the original manhwa/comics.

  3. I cannot WAIT for this drama. I am so excited for Monday and Tuesday. I feel like I have waited forever. I also love that we know it’s going to be a happy ending. While Kim Minkyu was in BIMFL, Seol Inah was not in True Beauty.

  4. Thank you, @packmule3. Shallow is fine right now.

  5. Thank you! ☺️

    I’m watching this show too.

@pkml3, Yumi’s Cells became 14 episodes, but without filler. I suppose Writer-nim SJJ (Writer of ‘W’ too) really needed the extra time to round off her story.

Hmmm… quite an over the top type of show, at least for the first Episode, but possibly understandable because it’s from a webtoon. It definitely links back to it’s manhwa roots in colour, tone and character depiction. Kudos for the guys’ styling. They looked so hot. 😉

  8. @Growing Beautiful, I found episode 1 rather old-school. Yes, the ML and 2nd ML looked very nice. If I were a man, I would want that black double-breasted suit. It didn’t look too stuffy at all. 😏

  9. Really hoping that Ahn Hyo-seop will lighten up and show some comedic chops soon. In the first episode he’s so stiff and stuffy–I can’t imagine that was entirely in the script. He seems to be so unemotional I wonder if he’s still possessed by Ma Wang. (Am I the only person who thinks he looks better with red eyes?)

Because of his lack of emotion, it looked like the FL had to give it her all. I don’t think she would have had to work so hard if her ML had more comedic chops. I’m trying to think of other actors who would be great in this role–maybe PSJ, who was over-the-top as the ML in What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim. Or Kim Jung-hyun, who showed a comedic side in Mr. Queen (“No touch!”).

  10. I wish these had been released all at once for a fun binge session. After watching SJK do the hair swipe in Vincenzo in such a suave, mocking way, no one else can compare. Some other tic would’ve been preferable. I liked his cooking/cleaning habit at the assistant’s (what’s his title) apt and I’m ready to watch him interact with HaRi in work situations…not just her avoiding him.

  11. Have watched ep. 1 and it is keeping a light and funny tone. I was worried about the 2 main leads acting skills. FL is OK. Unfortunately, I find ML lacking with his comedy skills and his character coming off somewhat bland. I really hope that he can improve in next episode as I do find the premise funny. I have to say I wish they cast a different actor in male lead role. I like the 2nd leads so far. Plotwise, I did find it unbelievable that ML did not recognize Ha Ri right away after seeing her employee photo as the girl from his blind date. (Maybe he knows all but show is hiding that from us and will reveal it later)

  12. @Table122000, not it’s not deep at all: about 1mm. The ML does improve in ep. 2, although I think one of his problems is his monotonous tone of voice. And he looks like an archaeopteryx. 😆 There is plenty of other comedy in the 2nd ep – much of it very broad and if you don’t like tropes, stop now. Not just wrist grab, but a full ‘fall on top of him with your mouth on his.’ (without broken teeth or cut lips, mind)

I loved the grandfather asking wonderingly, ‘Why are the rich always villains on these shows?’ after forcing his grandson to go on 11 dates in one day with ‘suitable’ girls.

  13. @Fern-Yes, this drama is definitely a light watch!:-)

I have finished Ep. 2 and I agree with you the ML character has improved. That said, I still have issues with Ahn Hyo Seop’s acting. Hopefully, he will also improve as drama continues. I’m enjoying the comedy and prepared myself for the tropes after your advice. The “Accidental Fall & Kiss’- oh my! Grandfather is hilarious!

  14. After watching the Grid with intense music, I decided to give this ago to unwind. So it’s OK that the plot is predictable and just a recut of many other similar stories before. I sign up for a feel good watch. I hope to watch how the hardworking, debt-ridden FL will slowly unpeel the cold, smart, hardworking arrogant layers of this ML. ML is someone who lost his parents perhaps due to this, unable to connect emotionally as a result.

Agree the ML’s intention of putting out a cold and arrogant face hasn’t really been achieved. There is something too unreal about it, so it turns out quite flat. I guess it is hard to act out a person who has emotions but unable to realise them. That is most obvious when he was acting along with his grandfather. Lee Deok Hwa is a lot more animated and natural in his portrayal of the rich grandfather.

I also agree that ML got better in ep 2. He is better when he needs to display emotions, like when he is angry, annoyed by his secretary, bickering with, or amused by the FL. I will still watch it to see how their fake dates will be like. I wanted to see the FL got dressed up, go to romantic dates, and do all sort of unreal romantic stuffs that only exist in Kdramas with a good OST.

  15. “and do all sort of unreal romantic stuffs that only exist in Kdramas with a good OST.” @Viva, that is perfection in terms of this drama!

I have to add that I’m also in it for the fashion and the interiors of the rich houses as well as the story line.

  16. @birdie007, Yes wasn’t it funny when Tae-moo invites himself around to Sung-hoon’s flat and starts tidying and cleaning? It wasn’t even very messy. Then he cooked and did the dishes. I would take him to wife, I would. I want someone like him around my house.

  17. @Fern yes all for the nice clothes, handbags, and nice houses! 🙂

Yes unreal but nice to watch! That fall was so convenient and like you said, injury free, no frustration and landed on the exact right spot. His cooking skills are impressive, those prawns!

  18. @Viva, I re-watched the cleaning/cooking part. Yes, those prawns make me want to try something similar with sweet chili sauce.😋

  19. @packmule3, I’m with @Welmaris about the trope collection. She said that the drama makes fun of itself and I agree.

I keep picturing the 2nd FL with her hair in a bun, Mr Queen-style. Am I experiencing drama overload?

  20. Hmmm. Maybe I should restart the “Whatcha Cooking for Meatless Friday” thread?

I need ideas or it’s my default baked lemon pepper salmon every Friday. 😂

  21. Oh, please do repeat that thread. I got some great Friday meals from that last year. We like Salmon brushed with a bit of pesto or with teriyaki, depending on the accompanying sides.

I saw this list of exceptions to abstaining from meat during Lent (credit Wikipedia): “While the rules of abstinence generally only allow seafood, there are a few exceptions. In parts of South America, especially in Venezuela, capybara meat is popular during Lent and Holy Week; in response to a question posed by French settlers in Quebec in the 17th century, beaver was classified as an exception;[19][20][21] and the Archbishop of New Orleans said that “alligator is considered in the fish family” in 2010.[22][23][24] The legal basis for the classification of beaver as fish probably rests with the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas, which bases animal classification as much on habit as anatomy.”

Very sadly, none of those are available where I live. 😝😆
