Another fun show this weekend. Na Inwoo is definitely a valuable player in this episode.
1. Mission Bread-Possible
Site: a famous 46-year-old bakery in Namwon. People flock to it for their bread. It serves 300 people on the weekends.
Mission: Each team will wait in line to buy bread without being recognized by the people. If one or two people recognize them, they fail the mission.
The hitch, however, is that while they’re standing in line, they’re given tasks that will almost certainly attract attention and get them recognized.
Prize: Dinner
The guys know that JongMin’s team is at a disadvantage. He’s famous. SeYoon says, “Even elders know him. He’s like their president.”
Ravi: But a lot of elders recognize Inwoo as well.
JungHoon: He’s really tall. He grabs attention.
Dindin: He stands out right away.
JungHoon: We’ll win this one.
Sure enough, Ravi and Junghoon’s team wins. Nobody recognizes them even when Ravi makes a “Nike” handstand (oh! So that’s how you call that!) in line. The one lady who keeps staring at them doesn’t recognize Ravi, but she finds their behavior suspicious. Inwoo laughs because he warned them earlier that if they behaved too weirdly, they could be reported to the police. Lol.
Seyoon and Dindin fail the mission. In 50 seconds, they’re recognized by men waiting in line. The men say that they watch 2D1N. Seyoon says the salient point.
Seyoon: Although we lost the game, I’m proud of ourselves. Why? When he recognized us, he didn’t say, “What brings you here?” (he said) “I enjoy watching your show.”
Dindin: Right. “Are you here for a shoot?” A car that was passing by stopped. It really stopped.
The PD comments that they are reminded that they are loved so much.
Inwoo and Jongmin’s mission made me laugh the most because of Inwoo’s drama. Jongmin’s task is to read an online news article but Inwoo is required to trip and fall while shouting JM’s name, then do 100 push-ups. While they’re doing their mission, the rest of the gang can watch them from a laptop, as their actions are secretly being filmed.
Ravi: He really stands out.
Dindin: Inwoo will come running and draw attention, right?
Seyoon: It’s better when there are many people.
Then, Inwoo starts action. He calls “Hyung!” from across the street.
The PD comments that he’s showing off the vocalization of an actor.
He has a booming voice that the men in line all turn to look at him. Even Jongmin is startled because Inwoo is so loud. Lol. Then, he falls down and plants himself at Jongmin’s feet.
The gang bursts out laughing at Inwoo’s action.
Ravi: I think they recognized him. They’re looking at Jong Min.
Meaning, once they observe what Inwoo’s doing, their focus will turn to the “hyung” he’s addressing. They think that Inwoo’s a drunk man.
JM: Are you okay?
Inwoo: Yes. Why are you here? (starts doing push-up at the same time) I’ve been looking for you.
JM: Are you okay? What’s going on Why are you working out? (pretending not to know what Inwoo’s doing)
Inwoo: I feel much better now.
Ravi: Inwoo stands out so much.
Ravis sounds proud of Inwoo. And same here. My heart swells with pride when a bystander asks if she can take a photo with JongMin, and asks “Na Inwoo-ssi” to stand beside JongMin. Na Inwoo’s only been on the show for about a month and a half, and he’s already recognizable.
Lady: Na Inwoo-ssi, too.
Inwoo: Me too?
JM: You know his name too.
The gang: She knew his name. Gosh, Inwoo.
Seyoon and Dindin think that it’s better to lose at this game than win. Despite failing the mission, they feel good about it.
SY: My popularity is giving me a hard time today. Because I’m popular. Hyung (addressing JungHoon) you’ll never get what I’m saying. You’ll never know.
Dindin: Me too. I want to wander around like Ravi.
What a backhanded compliment! He means that Ravi can walk around freely because nobody recognizes him; he’s non-celebrity.
2. Dinner Game
While waiting for dinner, Inwoo reminds Dindin that he blamed Inwoo for YB’s team losses.
Dindin: I think I’m losing all the time these days.
JM: Now you know why.
SY: You should admit it now.
Inwoo: So you were the reason we lost. It was you, not me. You said I was the problem here.
Dindin: I mean…
SY: You should admit it now.
JM: Admit that you were the reason that your team lost.
SY: We call JungHoon Trash Card, but you are Rotten Card. You are Rotten Card from now on.
Inwoo and JongMin: Rotten Card.
Dindin: Then you hyung, you are Blown-Up card.
SY: Blown-up Card? What’s that?
Dindin: You are blown up. You’re blown up since you’re fat.
SY: Then you are a Stolen Card. I wish someone takes you away. You are Stolen Card now. You should be Stolen Card.
Inwoo: (adding) You know what? They all suit you. Those nicknames all suit him.
Dindin: I have no energy left to refute.
Omigoodness. These men are childish! That’s why a woman can’t become a permanent member of the group. Their ridiculously petty dynamics will change drastically when a woman is around. They’ll have to be on their best behavior. They won’t be able to shame each other about body weight, body height, or skills.
3. New word learned: “King-bada”
Inwoo wins a few of the mini-games for the side dishes.
Ravi: Inwoo knows how to make people upset big time.
He uses the word “king-bada” and the Viki translated it as “upsetting people big time.”
According to this site, everymemes-tistory.com
it refers to a feeling of indignation, such as getting angry or excited about something. For example, if you study hard and your test score doesn’t come out much better than you think, you can just say something like “You’re king” or “You’re score is king”. As another example, when playing a game, you can say “Oh.. I’m king” even if things don’t work out the way I thought they would. This is a word that can be used in situations like this when something is angry.
I guess, it’s similar to the English expression, “you got pawned!” The word “pawned” suggests that you’ve been played and you’ve been trounced.
The article further says,
The origins of these ‘King Received’ and ‘King Received’ are from Lee Mal-nyeon, a writer who worked as a Naver webtoon writer and now turns into an Internet broadcaster. Calm Man (the broadcast name of Lee Mal-nyeon) often used the phrase “Are you mad?” for things that were not usually used or trivial, but I came to use it often because it got viewers stuck in their mouths. At that time, it was fashionable to add ‘King’ or ‘God’ in front of certain words, such as ‘God Ji-seong (Park Ji-sung)’, ‘Gattogi (Ottogi),’ ‘King Bok-dong, King of Cars (Um Bok-dong, King of Bikes)’. The buzzword ‘I’m mad’ was also influenced by this, so I came to use it as ‘King’. That’s how the word king was born, and after that, it spread through several other internet broadcasts and internet communities, leading to the present.
So Ravi turns to JoonHoon and asks if he’s heard of the internet slang before.
JH: Doesn’t it mean that he makes people very upset?
Ravi: Hyung, can you say, “King bad-nun-da”?
JH: You’re “king badnunda”
Ravi’s so used to speaking this slang that it doesn’t connect that “King-badneunda” (or 열받는다) has the English word “king” in it. This will come to haunt Ravi later.
4. Table Tennis
I like how the gang is flexible. They were supposed to play soccer but “foot” volleyball but the ground was too wet for the ball to bounce. So the director decides to have them play ping pong instead.
Dindin and Seyoon think they have an advantage because they know how to play ping pong. Jongmin quickly ditches Inwoo, who protests, “Hyung!” JM explains he doesn’t know how to play and so doesn’t Inwoo. The other guys brutally say, “That’ll make it more fun.”
Mission: The two who failed their “Mission Bread-Possible” will go head-to-head. The first to get 8 points wins. The winner of the match will get bread and advance to play against Ravi and JH’s team. The winner of this final match will win iced Americano.
Seyoon however suggests that they add another feature to the game. They can’t speak English while playing. Whoever speaks English, the team score will revert to zero.
This is funny to watch because Seyoon keeps on messing up. His downfall? It’s the word, “Okay.” What makes it even funnier is that had they not messed up they would have easily won. He and Dindin scored a total of 24 points, while Inwoo and Jongmin, aka Team Dr. Fools, only scored 8. But they kept misspeaking and going back to zero while Team Dr. Fools and Jongmin never lost a single point.
Seyoon: I think it’s because they don’t know English.
Dindin: They don’t know English at all.
The camera focuses on Jongmin and Inwoo. Inwoo doesn’t say anything. Ha! know that he speaks English. He doesn’t correct them, though.
The second match of the night is against Ravi’s team, and this time it’s Ravi who messes up. His word? It’s “King-bada.”
He says it at the beginning of the match because Inwoo looks annoying as he dances.
Inwoo: (teasing Ravi) Hyung, you can do it too!
Seyoon: This is a perfect show for Inwoo.
Ravi: (pointing at Inwoo) He’s so “king-bada” (“so annoying”).
But since it’s the beginning of the match, and no points have been scored yet, he isn’t called out for it. The play begins, and because of forced errors, Team Dr Fools is up 2 : 1.
JongMin: (talking to Inwoo): Hey, we might win and eat everything.
Inwoo: Exactly.
Ravi: (interrupting them) Ugh. They’re so king-bada!
Jongmin hears that, “What did you say just now?” and a point is deducted.
Seyoon tries to trap Jongmin into speaking English. Jongmin is part of a group and he’s the rapper. He can’t say “rapper” though because it’s English, and there’s no Korean translation for that word.
Seyoon: What’s your position in KOYOTE?
Jongmin: I sing.
lol. He evades the trap.
Seyoon (trying again): What’s your favorite song of KOYOTE?
Jongmin: I like every song.
Seyoon: What’s your favorite among them? Sing us a line.
JongMin: I like “Sad Dream.”
Seyoon: Sing “Sad Dream.”
He sings it then says, “I like it.” He avoids singing the English parts.
Hence, there’s a wall between Seyoon and Jongmin. Seyoon is effectively blocked by Jongmin.
After that Ravi’s team rallies and they’re ahead 5 : 4.
Inwoo: How many points are left for us?
Dindin: If they score three more points, the game will end.
Seyoon: The game will be over.
Jongmin: (reassuring Inwoo) That’s okay.
Inwoo has the ball and is getting ready to serve. But it isn’t his turn.
Ravi tells him to hand over the ball because it’s their serve.
Ravi: Give it to me. It’s our serve.
Inwoo: (wordlessly pointing at him)
Ravi: (repeating himself) Give me. It’s our serve.
Seyoon: (agreeing) It’s Ravi’s serve.
Inwoo: (wordlessly making a face at him)
Ravi: Ugh! He’s so king-bada!
As soon as he says it, he realizes he made a mistake.
Ravi says he’s having a mental breakdown. He tries to trick Inwoo to say that he has a “hot pack” (or heating pad) on his back, but Inwoo isn’t falling for that.
He and JongHoon can’t recover after that misstep. Ravi’s a good sport, though. He didn’t resort to violence (cough cough Will Smith) after all the teasing and provocation he got.
That’s how the Inwoo and JongMin had an improbable victory over two teams much better than them.
I couldn’t believe how Team Fools won the ping pong. 😂. It was obvious that IW never played before but he picked it up better towards the end. But you’re right, they won because the other teams kept using English words. And we know IW can speak English. I was surprised he won the side dishes game too. The one with the song lyrics. He wasn’t just good at picking up the song lyric and carrying on with a new one but he ended the lyric on really difficult words which meant the person next up would struggle to continue. He’s definitely warmed up real quick.
I couldn’t stop laughing at Ravi and JungHoon at the bread shop. I think their cover was the fact that they looked like those weird YouTubers and people didn’t think twice about what they did as a result. IW and JongMin were too easy to spot. IW’s running and then tripping (and then having to do push ups)? That was just odd. But it was nice that they were recognized so readily.
I am enjoying the dynamic of this bunch of men but you’re right, they are way too rowdy and crass. Surely they would calm down and behave better in front of female company? 🤔
Aww…JungHoon’s wife GaIn is the special guest next week. I read up about their romance. She gave up her career to marry him? She married him when she was in her 20s. Most actresses and actors only marry in their 40s. They have 2 children together. They look like a very loving couple.
I don’t know much about JungHoon and GaIn’s romance. I know this much:
a. They married and then he left to do his military service. Typically, a girlfriend waits till after the guy’s done before agreeing to marry because two years can be a long time and feelings change. So, she’s willing to get tied to him before then.
b. She’s attracted to his family. I don’t know if she has issues about her own father, but she saw his loving relationship with his own father, and wanted that for her own. Again, typically a girlfriend falls in love with the guy because of his looks, money, muscles, sex appeal, the outside trappings. But, to me, she was looking to the future. She wanted to have a family with JungHoon’s calm, steady, and loving relationship with parents. She would like to have him as father to her children.
🙂 I wish more young ones would think like that: imagine their boyfriend as a father material, and not just a husband material. If they can’t picture their boyfriend as a caring and loving father, then he’s probably not there in the long haul.
c. They waited (10 years?) to have children. I thought this showed JH’s care for her. Since they married young, they waited. He didn’t see her a baby factory, and was willing to go with her time. When they were ready, they had children. As usual, there were nasty rumors of infertility, but they ignored that.
d. He mentioned that GaIn was attracted to him speaking English. I think he has relatives (cousins?) in California, and he converses in English with them on the phone. GaIn thought that was attractive. My impression here is that JH comes from a relatively more affluent family than GaIn.
e. He protected her. This is RUMOR: GaIn was getting “propositions” and marrying JH put an end to all that. When I say propositions, I mean offers of sponsorship from rich, dirty old men. To advance in her career, a patronage from a rich man would have “helpful.” Marriage to JH protected her from that yucky situation.
About Ravi’s “Nike” pose…I didn’t know there was a term for that! lol. I laughed because it did look like a Nike checkmark logo.
I was worried about JungHoon’s pride. I hope he was fine after that. I remember in Season 3, the PD had a similar popularity contest. He had the town folks line up behind the cast members. Many people lined up behind JongMin but Kim Joo Hyuk (bless his soul) had nobody behind him. I think Defcon pulled a prank and lined up instead.
Not sure if the guys will come down when GaIn is around. But the PD and writer must be happy because they’re getting quite a lot of content from an overnight trip. Like this episode. They were able to make 2 whole episodes already…and they haven’t even played yet the indoor/outdoor sleeping game AND the getting-off-work game.
So that’s good. If they can produce 2 1/2 episodes from one outing, then they’re maximizing their biweekly (or is weekly?) trips. That’s why PD wasn’t worried when JongMin and SeYoon were out due to Covid. She had enough material to work on that even if they postponed filming for a couple weeks, she had a buffer.
To me, this is due to the addition of Inwoo to the team. It was hard for JM to carry the show as the lone “fool” in the team. Now, there’s two of them.
Wow @packmule3, thanks for all those little nuggets about the GaIn/JH romance. There are little things he mentions offhandedly that tell me he’s deeply in love with her still. I agree about young ones needing to picture their bf as father of their children material rather than just husband material. You would think that it goes hand in hand but increasingly in this world where the definition of what “marriage and family” is gets more and more fragmented, it’s no longer the case. I wonder how GaIn kept it from JH that she was coming on the show? Or did they rig it?
I thought the same about the “Nike” pose. 😂. I think the advantage they had was that JH had his camera. So it looked for all intensive purposes like one of those weird YouTubers doing something to load up on their social media. It was the perfect cover. The others didn’t have that advantage.
I also liked how IW seemed genuinely concerned that they had taken it too far with the jesting when DinDin walked out after the Bread/PingPong challenge. They did pick on him rather mercilessly. I was starting to feel really uncomfortable with it. 🤔
I agree about IW’s addition. He obviously brought a lot to the team. So much so that PD didn’t feel the need to edit out “boring bits”. You could hear the production laughing a lot in the background during filming?
Apparently DinDin has tested positive for COVID now. But they did reassure viewers that they had filmed enough to continue to run the show without any breaks.
This has become my happy pill again weekly. I am glad to be tuning in to 2D1N again.
PS I didn’t quite get the number game they played? When were you supposed to substitute saying the number with the word? Was it prime numbers? Or was it multiples of 3?
See that? Dindin has COVID so he’ll be gone for two weeks. (Right?) But they’ve enough material from a single outing because even their downtime (e.g., the ride to the location spot) can be included because there’s so much funny stuff going on in the conversations.
Yes. I felt sorry for Dindin especially when he thought he won the bread in his match with JungHoon. You see, @nrllee, that’s Dindin’s role or persona. He’s supposed to be the childish one who sulks, whines, and throws tantrum when he loses. There’s one episode when he showed the guys the rug burns he got from one of the games. The game entailed them sliding on the floor. The other guys (especially that Mr. Dimples) were just doing it easily. But Dindin was really into it because he’s naturally competitive (plus, he had his height disadvantage). But when he showed his scrapes, I thought “Awwww… poor guy!”
So this bread game is another one of those “Awwwww… poor guy!” episode. It’s not the first time he loses.
The number game?? I don’t think it’s multiples of 3. I think they’re NOT supposed to say any number containing the digits 3, 6, and 9. They’re supposed to clap.
And yes to the “father-of-my-children” material. Some people don’t want to have children. 🙂
In Woo has definitely got the hang of the banter now. He’s not just observing and being friendly. In the end the bread was shared by everyone so no hard feelings, which was good.
Looking forward to Ep. 118.
