Thanks for doing this so promptly and so early @pkml3.

I was afraid that I’d be assigned to do family ‘taxi-services’ on certain nights each week which might include Saturdays, hence the earlier start time. @WE, @FGB and @salteddust have most kindly accommodated my changes.

The last 3 episodes, @WE found (and I vaguely recall) had some filler in the prologue, hence we felt we could FFD those parts and the episodes would each be shorter. Hence we are going to continue with 2 episodes on the 26th Nov.

Take care of yourself on that long overseas trip!!

  2. Happy to read that you will spend some time traveling @PM3!. Hope you have a good time! 😀

    Dear @GB, how are you?.

I am having a hard time dealing with the way the female lead is preyed upon. I am still when she goes to her teacher’s home in episode 1. Even with no volume it is a hard watch. It is not because it is a bad drama, but because it remembers me how vulnerable we are.

That said, her teacher conning her makes me remember a segment of MAUS, a comic about Nazi occupation where the Nazis are cats and the Jews are mouses.

There is a part where the narrator tells the history of his father and how he lost parents in law. They were rich but failed to escape in time and had to hide in a hidden room in the ceiling of their own house. A burglar appeared in their homes, got some valuables, they let him go but said burglar decided to rat them out, so they got caught and deported to a concentration camp were they got killed.

A little while later the imprisoned son in law (the father of the narrator) had to move corpses to be cremated an alas, there was the cadaver of the thief!. What got me was that his father didn’t gloat over the demise of the person that destroyed his family, but he simply thought of him as someone desperate to survive and just another victim like him, his in-laws and his wife.

That quiet pondering on events that carries away millions of persons like a river carries dead leafs, that extreme compassion for someone that committed a crime against his family but was in the end just another human being, another possible version of him reacting to terrible circumstances like he could have probably done gave me shivers.

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @FGB, thanks for sharing the story in MAUS. I do like that evil is not reciprocated with evil but with understanding and forgiveness.

I am able to watch Liar Game as a show of psychological and logical puzzles. I ignore the over the top acting. Although I hated the way the naive, innocent and good Kanzaki Nao is treated, the extreme in how she is so untouched by the deceit and how she responds to those who ridicule her is what offers the commentary for this show. I assume it is meant to be troubling and get us feeling revulsed, upset, shocked, to get us to re-think.

I hope you can manage to join in here and there even if you’re some episodes behind. Not many prior scenes are necessary for you to understand what is going on. The premise is the same for each game and we watch to see if anyone changes as the game goes on. 🙂

  4. Dear @GB, we will see.

Nao sitting in her room with closed curtains and covered herself in a blanket made me evoke the story of the rich, miserable man that tried to destroy his poor neighbor’s happiness by giving him a considerable amount of money and making him afraid to be mugged.

All I have are tales conjured from images.

  5. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Dear me, @FGB, what troubling tales come to your mind!

It’s interesting that this show does explain the psychological aspects of being watched, of being manipulated and how after the stress, the results that could play out.

Getting a person to behave in a particular way requires a great understanding of human psychology and patience. Generally I’d think there are no guarantees that we will get the desired results. But our protagonist seemed very sure of his plans and deductions.

Show gives us a surprise element as well and gets us to ask ‘why’.

  6. Hello FGB and GB!
I’m reading a bit and around the place, waiting the time.

  7. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi there @WE, thanks for being here so nice and early and accommodating my odd time.

I’m also answering a post while waiting. Bringing up my Liar Game folder and checking in on MyDramaList cast and crew. I cannot remember the names of the characters except for 4 or 5. 😣

  8. I don’t remember names too. But they have nicknames, like “mushroom”, “mini-mushroom”, or “leopard skin”. 😉

  9. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Took me a while to match Leopard Skin with the right name but fortunately I heard it confirmed (Etou Koichi) in the next episode.

    OK we can start NOW!!!

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Good to know that Akiyama does not consider the most important thing in life to be money. It’s probably linked also to his backstory.

  11. Yes ETO!
    Of course, “mushroom” is FUKUNAGAAAAA!
    I’m watching the resume. ^^

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes, I feel for Ep 5 the resume/prologue is important, however for Ep 6, we can probably skip most of the resume.

  13. So what’s next… resolution of the PLOT TWIST of the cliffhanger!!
Ahahaha, Liar game is a drama with twists to unlock the jaw, yyayayayaya, kind of I like. 🙂

There is sounds each time Eto move his head. ^^

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Even poor, slow Etou can figure out that the only way to win is teamwork. but only the crooked Fukunaga would sign a false name on 3 different teams. Smart but so deceitful!!!

I feel though, that he should be punished for using a false name. That should have been in the rules.

  15. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

It’s such a crazy joke that they are making their secret plans loudly in front of the sunglasses girl LOL.

  16. About that, it wasn’t explained previous episode. But Akiyama didn’t respect the contract either (as he changed his vote), but… it didn’t need because at this point there was only Fukunaga giving a false name. So “legaly” Akiyama had the right to do so. 🙂

  17. The beautiful “woman with glasses” remove her glasses. Pretty woman with a cold style.

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I like how the girl is so assured/confident and calmly lists all the calculations and why she gets the most of the winnings. Actually in the end, she did, I think, because AS agreed to give her a certain amount.

  19. I’m sure every money calculation is right and precise, but I didn’t have the patience to take a calculator and verify. ^^

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Is pretty woman Ishida Rie? I can’t recognise her in the dramalist cast list.

  21. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Me too… calculating amounts in the billions or millions is not my thing at all!!!

Fortunately there was again more than one team at work during the last vote.

  22. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Compared to how cool and quiet AS is, Fukunaga is just so over the top noisy. He has to make his character to be so extremely unlikable at this stage.

  23. IDK, I need to verify later.
So here, because she wanted too much money, they lack time. With the panic, they give their vote to her.

And of course, fun line from Akiyama “next turn?”, “what next turn?!”, ahahahaha.

  24. It’s a unlikeable character I like to unlike. ^^

  25. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

That question from AS threw Etou into a panic.

LOL, they forgot that he had voted no and torn his yes vote.

At last there’s silence so we can hear the final Yes. LOL

  26. NO (echo) (echo) (echo)

  27. YES.
….. SILENCE…. wahahaa, unlock the jaw transition, with sounds and close up on every face. lolol. This drama is at least 10% of that if no more.

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL much echo echo. The girl is a good liar.

He has to set up the unlikeableness first since he’s going to be a repeated character for later.

  29. There is also a lot of very good and unconventional background musics, using fuzzy electro or diverse weird sounds.

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The BGM makes it feel even more anime like or at least plays up how unreal this show is although it deals with real psychology.

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Fukunaga has to return the 100 Million that he stole. It was against the rules to steal the money outside the game. He throws a noisy tantrum. So much screaming… must have hurt his throat!

  32. Yeah, the whole is surrealist!!

Now we have a new looser nerveous breakdown.
A lot more intense than the first one from the teatcher.
    It’s like a eartquake!! poor fukunaga…

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

AS asks the masked game master: “What do you want? Why do you organise this game?”
LG : “To form a true gathering of liars. That’s all. In this world, there are people searching for genius liars, no matter how high the cost….Lying is another skill.”

This is also partially a lie.

  34. How good is the scenary here.
Start on the screen, move in the room (same room than where is the screen). Close up on the woman speaking to Akiyama, as Akyama is seen on the screen.

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Eri asks AS why he took part in the game.
“To save Kanzaki Nao? Or was it to save yourself?” – No answer.

They leave the house on a very foggy night. Is this an analogy for the state of KN’s mind?

KN is concerned about all the people in debt. She’s not happy with that.

  36. Scene in the car, like was the scene in the autobus, it’s studio. This drama has a low budget. But anything cheap is then transformed into something artistic, even this fake car scene, there are ideas, lights, mood.

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

When AS says everyone’s debt had been paid (by him as he’s going into the 3rd round) he only meant the 7 people in his team? I was wondering why the next time we see the Revival Game and there are losers who are in debt.

Those are from the other 2 teams who lost?

  38. Golden teeth will trap again Nao so easely. ^^

  39. I’ve no idea where diseapered a lot of people. For the revival game, there is people from the other teams than Akiyama one (in theory).

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Golden tooth is Officer Tanimura Mitsuo. He changes his phrasing with KN from AS helped her and she should help him to she should save him….

    Mitsuo watches her carefully
She’s easily convinced : “He did that for me?”
“Do you want to save him?” (From help him to save him is a big change.
    “Of course.”
    “You can.”
She’s now duped to enter the Liar Game Revival Round. (Carrot and the Stick Method)

He says it’s a low level game of only the weak, so it’s easy to win and there she can win money (That’s the carrot)

Then he changes it to “…remember, you’re the only one who can save Akiyama.” (That’s the stick.)

KN went to the revival round so as not to abandon AS again. Poor KN. It was a horrible game.

  41. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I believe the losers team was correctly made up of people from the other 2 teams except for Fukunaga and KN.

There were however only 8 others plus KN making 9 persons.

  42. You are FREE to participate or not BUT remember…
    🙂

  43. New stage, weird place and pink sky!

  44. You know, I put a pink sky in my W season 2 script, as… it’s a manhwa world.
But here. 🙂 🙂 🙂 It’s supposed to be the real world in Liar game 🙂 🙂 🙂

  45. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The BUT makes the FREE not free at all. Covers it in guilt and sympathy for AS so that KN is bound to have to say ‘Of course’ she would help and would not abandon AS.

  46. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes the pink sky and lurid colours did bother me a lot. Now KN comes and the sky is purplish pink and she and her things are bathed in bluish purple.

An artificial reality and scary. The surroundings and the places chosen for the game are so hostile looking too. So much intimidation against a little ‘girl’.

This one the Revival Round was really terrible… pitting a single person against 8 others. It looked like they had all already had a meeting and ganged up on her before she even arrived.

  47. As a little detail, when the master explain “restructuration”, there is some drawing (show a guy fired in a company).

  48. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Eri to KN : “We knew you would come. You’re so very kind.” (She was being manipulated from the very start… and so was AS through KN. I wonder if he knew that he’d been dragged into the game on purpose.)

KN considers Liar Game to be a terrifying battlefield.

Restructuring Game/Downsizing Game – sacrifice one person in order to survive. 1 out of 9 pax. 8 continue to the Round 3. Sounds terrible. It turns out to be a popularity vote and it’s terribly depressing to find oneself soooooo unpopular and not know why!!!!

  49. The artistic director was very good. The manga is highly “black and white” atmosphere, featuring a dark world. But in the drama it’s the opposite, all is very colorfull. Like the many colors in the mail of this new game.
In the last game, there is even a room that makes think of the room from the movie “cube”.

  50. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Restructuring seems to have only that one meaning nowadays. It always refers to laying off people at work.

It used to have a wider meaning before.

Going into Ep 6… can skip the first minute, I think.

  51. hey hey, I think here, we guess Nao will be the sacrifice!
But now… we find there is some logic and she’s not the sacrifice in the first place. For that, it needs a very nasty twist. 🙂

  52. Just a script trick idea. In the games, there are often penalty (100M most of the time). A plot twist could be someone use that and take a penalty, if that player can win more than 100M after that. But no games used that. It’s the only plot-twist the writer didn’t used.

  53. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Those with straightforward, simpler ways of thinking will not consider buying votes. But in real life, buying votes is often ‘automatically expected’.

  54. We can look at all the stupid stuff Nao took in her bag. Unbelievable. 🙂

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I believe there may have been a taking of penalty in the Season 2 game with cards/poker.

Yes, I was stunned by the toys in KN’s bag. What was the rationale for bringing all those things.

  56. She lives on another planet. 🙂

  57. Fukunaga licks his ice cream like a cat. ^^

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I wonder if Fukunaga is supposed to represent an animal or just a mushroom LOL.

  59. Fukunaga is by far the most clever guy in the room. Just with a few, he makes people participate for a good reason… when his plan is finaly to smash NAO!!! Ugly trap.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Fukunaga is clever in using psychology against the group.

  61. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

When they hear that she has no debt, they all turn against her… that was what Fukunaga was aiming for.

  62. Keiko is the woman with glasses here. What a face she have!! Really funny and weird characters.

Fukunuga is almost sadistic here. Step by step he finds more way to make Nao suffer. Fake teams, then later, the card game. The heroin is destroyed for good at the end!!

  63. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Only past 11 minutes into the episode then we get the opening credits and music. Very interesting. I wonder why it prefers a cold open.

  64. Oh yeah, it’s true. The credit look like just a scene like another. They put that when they think it’s the right time. Like a scene conclusion/transition. I like a lot this music by the way.

  65. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Fukunaga is a clever talker, especially with naive KN.

So much explanation but I heard it and fell asleep earlier!!!

  66. what a snake!! with the sensitive music.. “and also… you look so fragile… so I have to help you”. YYAYAYA.

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Most of the music is very energetic.

KN is again thinking about others getting more into debt.

Fukunaga’s view is only winners or losers and no other alternative. KN keeps trying to find an alternative but she needs help initailly in the thinking/planning department.

  68. Golden tooth explain to Akiyama that his revenge was a fail. It’s a bit of foreshadowing as the final vilain of the season is the guy he wanted to get revenge against.

  69. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Interesting that we keep being shown AS walking outside in an artifical yellowish light and Mitsuo is stalking him.

When Mitsuo speaks to AS it sounds like a threat.

  70. And now… the very bad surprise for Nao.

    0 vote

(with malaise music, zoom, sound effect, close up on her eyes)
Note: she could guess before with the vote of the previous person.

Fukunaga happy to explain to her: we have a beautiful expression with echo.
They look at the crazy editing, flash shots, everything, crazy.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes, this foreshadowing takes place so far in advance that I forgot about it by the time I saw the other guy.

AS is already supposed to enter the Round 3 but Mitsuo makes sure that he does by dangling the failure in front of him. He did not succeed in the revenge, therefore he will definitely enter the game again.

In the end… it wasn’t just that one guy that was guilty, was it? I thought it was the entire Liar Game ’empire’ of unseen people who were watching and betting on the players like they were horses in a race.

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

They make Fukunaga look like one crazed person, intent only on winning. What strange insane laughter He exults in the loss of the other person… such an opposite to KN’s personality. Polar opposites.

Painful to watch poor KN being rejected and ignored and losing all the time.

  73. If I remember well, Okoya was the director of the bad company? This company was part of the empire of the old guy making the liar game. But it’s in season 1. Season 2, we get new people in the organisation. I need to rewatch season 2 and the final movie.

Nao cry a lot in this game. She breaks our heart at the end!

  74. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

So, KN keeps to her promise and still votes 5 votes for Fukunaga each time. Therefore he’s sure to win. She never evens out the votes by breaking her promise.

  75. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The surprise element is that Eri comes to help KN. She actually speaks with her and asks her what she will do. Seeing that KN is clueless, Eri takes matters into her own hands. She know how to do it without breaking the rules.

  76. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

AS gets a call. We see that he starts to run to save KN. So her going in to save him was actually a ploy to get him to come and save her, so he sort of enters the Revival Round as well.

  77. I like so much Fukunaga as a character. The actor is damn good, and of course the way the camera/editing show him.

  78. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The only kind person to give her water is Etou. He feels bad for her. We see that the goodness of KN starts to kick in … She had tried to protect Etou in the previous round.

  79. With what ETOU says…. we understand the situation is completly screwed. As Nao have no vote for so long and there is an unbreakable contract that prevent to change things.
So of course a good preparation for plot-twist, as we think now: it’s impossible to change the situation, how Akiyama could?!? 🙂

It ends with the nasty laugh of Fukunaga, with a lot of images transitions, sounds effects.

  80. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Fukunaga starts to sell his betrayal and strategy. Smart move. No one had come that far. He had even ensured that KN could not do the same because all had been contracted for 10 rounds in advance.

  81. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

And of course, it makes it so necessary for us to go to Ep 7 to see what AS can do to turn everything around for KN. Show really hits the dramatic tension at it’s peak, and stops short there. Cliffhanger!

  82. Yeah it’s very difficult to resist the need to watch next episode right now!!!

  83. And… I rewatched this drama a lot… But no matter what!
I’m at the cliffhanger, and it’s magic… I want to watch again what’s coming next.

  84. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL, it feels like we should have planned to watch even numbered episodes and end on odd numbered episodes!!

  85. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I also watched parts and need to rewatch. Crazy addictive in that sense!

  86. I don’t know if it really change something.
Maybe better: a full rewatch day. So we have a something like a 10 hours rewatch party and we watch all at once. lol! 🙂

With the same for season 2 the following week. 🙂

  87. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

So we already have the next thread up for next week. That’s good. Even if we watch earlier, we can start to leave comments.

  88. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

10 hours! That will be killing. It’s going to go into all our various meal times and family activities LOL. It would be an interesting experiment though.

I probably manage about 5 episodes at one go if I really want to binge… but that’s maybe later at night.

  89. About the cliffhanger:
There is still some freedom if it needs too. For example: the cliffhanger could also be at the time when Nao loose the card game.

  90. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Show can make many scenes into cliffhangers… especially with they way they edit and add the sound and lighting effects.

  91. I usualy binge watch dramas. But most of the time 4 or 5 episodes in a session (well, not today as I’m very busy and don’t have time to watch dramas).
But about some dramas I just flash on it, like Empress Ki… It’s just the most episode I can watch (I watched that on holiday, so it was something like 5 days).
About dramas I already know, I do also that. So a W rewatch is two days. And a day for a liar game season. Two or three day a Jang Ok Jung rewatch.

  92. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for the company! See you again next week. 🙂

  93. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

You certainly manage your rewatch times in binges. I still have to space them out although I’d like to binge longer stretches. However not good for the lack of exercise!

  94. I think you get it about cliffhangers! Many scenes can becomes cliffhanger with the good editing, and some script changes. We saw that a lot in the W rewatch, as the script wasn’t the same than the drama. As a example the episode 3 cliffhanger, the scene when the heroin say “she replace the heroin”. There is not even a change in the script. It’s just the script had a very good line that’s sound very good in a cliffhanger.

  95. Yeah, see you next week, have a good taxi party now! 😉

  96. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I standby to do taxi parties LOL But maybe not needed sometimes. Just standby like a real taxi cruising around and waiting for passengers!!
