We have a good resume/abstract/recap from KN. Everyone looks so suspicious and unfriendly. The smiles look false.
Fukunaga “control the game”! ^^
It starts with the background music of the kind “uneasy and dizzy situation”.
This is the continuation of the difficult time for poor KN and we see the bad attitude of Fukunaga Y (FY) which irritates me a lot.
Everyone ignores her and speaks loudly for her to hear but not to her. Very mean.
Again, so great editing with many different portraits with transparency with results.
Each moments of this drama is an artwork about editing. It never stops.
I was thinking the whole mood they set up … they are like dolls or puppets at time, the way they are made to behave, the strange lighting and colours. Everything unreal. They are placed in an artificial world and manipulated.
To this is added the trickery/deceit of FY.
Fukunaga “you disgust me” : with cartoon splash of saliva. ^^
I like the game explanation. Well illustrated and explained and quickly. Yes the editing is very tight. The zoom in on precisely what we need to see. The animation that helps in the explanations. All well done.
Yeah, we get this unreal feeling.. to travel in a unique and original universe. What makes I like so much this drama. As W with its also unreal and unique screen feeling.
Now Fuku will scam even more harder poor Nao! ^^

When the cheat is just the base concept of probabilities… 🙂
We get the “bees” background music.

I actually enjoyed this scam. It was simple and yet so effective.
I liked that it was because of this scam that FY would face his downfall.
Like for “yumi cells”, lot of additional inserts on screen: the score looking like cards for example.
The sounds and the camera zooms create so much stress plus FY’s screaming and wide-eyed expressions.
His lies keep compounding. He says she has no luck but that’s false.
KN is dressed to look like a naive little girl at the mercy of the selfish players. AS is dressed in white like an angel who saves her.
So atmospheric – poor KN sits in the dark with just the ventilator fan causing the single light from outside to flicker on her. She walked in the dark while AS walked outdoors in the light.
She’s crying again… sorry not so much that she lost but that she cannot help/save AS.

Hah! We had the same thoughts on AS as the angel! I only just thought of it before the rewatch.
Yeah you noticed that, every time I see this scene, I feel it. Very sad. The feeling of desesperation was very well bring in by the script, with successive steps of “something go wrong again”.
Eri and Mitsuo are talking. She claims that the rules are not broken with AS joining the game. Mitsuo tries to find out why KN was dragged back into the game and if it was a command from the boss ‘him’. AS was going into the third round anyway, so why was KN made to come back into the game?
Do we ever find out why?
I find that maybe prematurely, I asked the question …did the show ever explain why KN was dragged back into the game? Was it just to have a foil against which to pit the other more mercenary, desperate and grabbing people? To afford entertainment to the ‘boss’ who set up the game?
Did we ever get a full explanation in the end? I know at the end of Ep 8 it was said that both KN and AS were wanted in the game.
(I’m a bit late in my comments, as you post between the time I answer, and vice versa. Well it don’t matter, we understand us well. 🙂 )
The cold woman have a kind of far fetched pretext to bring AKiyama in as a “personnal effect”. ^^
A bit cheaty.
With Akiyama pointing out that the card game was weighted in favour of Fukunaga, and teaching KN how to beat Fukunaga at his own game, KN starts to lie, and she does so convincingly. That is actually surprising, since she seems very truthful.
Yes! we have the explanation in the two “special episodes”. We know why the cold woman do that, we know everything!!! answers!!!!
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh! I was surprised, but even when Nao lies, she does it in a pure and innocent way (so dangerous! no one could guess she could lie). She’s not very good at playing comedy, I still think.
Ah we get the answers, that’s good. I cannot recall and hence I can enjoy it all over again LOL.
Fukunaga Yuji’s (FY) cheating her was his downfall… if not for the deceit, she might not have agreed to cheat him in return. “Give him a taste of his own medicine.” She finds and AS finds that she can lie pretty well.
She impresses Eri and even AS.
Eri seems to be happy that KN has the chance to play and to have votes under her name. She lied that she didn’t call AS into the game but I believe she did. I’m not sure but she may have done it on her own and not necessarily because the ‘boss’ asked her to.
Hah, when FY wins it’s not cheating but when AS wins, to him it’s cheating but he cannot admit why he knows it’s cheating LOL. Caught in his own game indeed!!
you are right, now I rewatch the scene, I have to admit… She lies very well. No idea why I was remembering she wasnt so good at that.
But the base concept of the drama specified she’s honest and naive, not that she couldnt lie! This time she have a good motivation for revenge. And… it’s very funny to beat Fuku with his own game.
Here, about screenplay: Flashback! of course, the flashback come during the action to explain a step. Better than to make this scene before the game.
Nao just have a lot of fun to scam Fuku! All this thing just make her laugh in a innocent way. She just do that for fun, as she don’t care about to win money.
The flashback explanation is more effective because we are under tension, not knowing if she’d win at first and worried that she’s making a mistake.
Now we hear the psychology of why FY won’t find out how she cheated. How he’d rush the game etc. Great psychology in action.
She didn’t forgot any of the various step of the psychological manipulation. Damn!!
That’s true, she challenged FY about his winning and whether he cheated. Eri interestingly says “You fooled him.” And smiled. She seems to be enjoying getting KN into the game to rile up people like FY and she seems to want KN to get the better of him.
Loved how the expressions were so stunned when she got 10 votes.
I hate that FY ridicules the loser. He exults in the ill fortune of others.
KN can start selling her votes. KN is the one who starts controlling the game.
But she has a hard time with the idea of crushing one person. AS says the one she hates but she does not choose to hate anyone.
Unlike KN, AS is out to punish those who deceived KN. He wants to take all their money and for her to withdraw from the 3rd Round. The other 8 would be in debt.
Wow! Noa can’t convince the guy, but as soon she speak about money, showing here decreased M ticket, the guy is ready to listen.
She just use the same trick than Fukunaga, making jaseaoulously and suspcision about someone in better position about winning/money.
Yes now KN goes around deliberately lying to 8 people and gets her votes. She gets them on her side by saying she wants to work with them to beat FY.
I love how at the end everyone is again so stunned but KN looked at her votes and smiled. For the first time, she had a genuine smile.
Then she apologised for lying LOL.

Now AS reveals himself much to the chagrin of FY …”What’s wrong with tricking them? This is the Liar Game.” That’s probably how the game was meant to be played. DY had been lying from the beginning.
Love how now it’s KN who controls the game. The sounds and the music emphasises all the shock…shock waves everywhere even KN is shocked. Maybe she’s the most shocked LOL.
Yes the gunshot sounds again… even in the resume of Ep 8.
Very noisy but we understand why.
I was wondering if the bag of useless things she carries means anything. It’s like she carries around her integrity, simplicity, trusting like a child. It’s almost like a burden, the way she carries it with her everywhere, not willing to just leave it in the room.

Those who are tied for votes have to buy votes. The price is astronomical. It cancels out the amount that KN would have to pay them.
LOLOL. In amazing logic it becomes better to pay 70 million than 10 milliion LOL. And for only 2 votes. Amazing how it worked out.
Only Nao could execute Akyiama plan, because in the process, it needs to get an huge debt. But she don’t care about money (when she don’t see it). Anyone else would be too scared and nerveous.
KN has to think about whom to lay off but she does not hate anyone. Her only interest is in saving everyone.
She looks uncomfortable sitting next to AS. She’s not at peace with the decisions he makes on her behalf.
Yeah, it’s the moment (with a tiger sound): “you have to crush the one you hate the most.”
cliffhanger for the credit intro.
Akiyama don’t trust words but trust acts.
It’s the last round but the buying of votes does not end… in the race to not be last, they behave like cornered rats.
AS’s aim is to get KN to be first place winner so that she can withdraw from the 3rd round.
AS thinks they deserve to be punished.
Sadly he says with indifference that if she withdraws there will be no reason for them to be associated with each other. Maybe this shakes up KN more than other matters. She pauses.
Tsuchida try to find a way out.
It’s really, as if it was not enough complicated, the writer thinked hard about the logic and potential plot-holes. And find one! So we get this scene, just in case someone is smart enough to detect a potential hole (not even a real one).
Using psychology again, AS says the condition is that the one buying the votes does not tell how many he bought.
KN asks Eri : “Why are you making us play this game. What’s the point in crowing the true Liar King? Making people steal money from each other and ostracize someone. Why would you do something so cruel?”
KN sits in the semi darkness again. This time she is thinking because she disagrees with AS, and has to find out how to play the game as she sees fit (as Eri advises later).
It’s one of those plotholes I’d never think of, but it gets plugged anyway.
I like how KN gets into action quickly and does not care that she appears worse than AS in taking everyone’s money totally. Everyone must hate her for doing it but she does not care because she has a higher motive.
Even her reason for laying off one person was justified and in agreement with her disposition and motives.
Now that they need her help, they finally talk to her first. She gets to vote first as well.
We come to the stressful revelation of votes and who would be in last place.
It’s a good twist, because we expect Fukunaga to be the last one.
Then certainly not be Mr Etou.
They are happy to not be the last one because the game will give them back 100M. But anyway, they all loose 100M more millions from Nao.
AS looks a bit proud of KN for how she went ahead to play and get all the money.
Poor Etou is in tears at being laid off.
Now we come to the explanation from KN.
First time Akiyama don’t understand something. quick gaze “what?”. What have done Nao?!
Poor mt etou: big crying fit.
The best twist was how she reinterpreted the game. It was not to lie and cheat people out of money but a game to save someone with 200 million. That was amazing!!
Yes, AS was staring and confused.
KN was reinterpreting the game… she points out that they didn’t need to have been ‘obedient’ to play the game. They could have chosen to not cheat or steal and no one would have lost anything or be sucked into another round.
Her alternative point of view is that the game should always be played as a communal game where everyone could come out without losing. At the end, the winners would always share the winnings with everyone.
An ideal world!!! The world of the first Christians who sold all their things and shared it out equally.
I’ve missed a step in the final explanation. ahaha. I need to rewatch. ^^
I feel that the game suddenly decided to not let anyone go after listening to KN say that Etou, etc could go home and not continue with the game. She gave them the money to get out of debt, pay back and go home.
So the actual ending was a shocker!!!
If I understand well… She give 200M to Etou. But… not sure why. To do that, she have to give the previous 100M she won?!
Eri asks AS if he’s displeased with the result created by KN. He has failed in getting her to leave the game. But she has got what she wanted because she did not want to be disassociated from AS. He had said that there was nothing more between them if not for the game, so KN continued playing. It seems that way on this rewatch.
It seems she gets an additional 100 million for winning so she has 200 million already plus the money was supposed to be in the figure of 2.1 billion or something, at first? I didn’t follow the numbers. The figure was just so huge.
I think I get it:
Mr Etou have 100M debt from previous game. In this one he gets 100M again. But as he lost the game, now he’s free and don’t have to continue. It’s why Nao gives to him 200M. To do that, she have to use her previous money, as the game pool her was 900M, and overall, she have to give 100M to every one, including herself.
It was funny that AS was speechless. She apologised for doing things her own way and he just stood before her and stared at her for so long… there must have been lots of things he wanted to say, but he just says “Let’s go home.”It’s KN’s turn to be shocked LOL.
It seems like this time the players are forced to go into the 3rd round immediately. No one had a chance to say no.
I wondered if the players were forced to continue because the ‘boss’ wanted to try a new test. Instead of individual games it would be a team game, and the 2 desire persons KN and AS were already there. By starting the next round immediately, they could not get away.
Anyway, it was a real twist in the ending of Ep 8. No chance for anyone to go home, rest or change clothes!
