Bitch Talk: On Spoilers

When I write my “First Impressions” or critique an episode, I’ve zero qualms whatsoever about mentioning spoilers.

Therefore, if you don’t like spoilers, please do yourself a favor and watch the drama BEFORE reading this blog — or searching the internet for information about the drama, for that matter.

To me, the key to enjoying a show is to be engaged in every bit of it that interests me. My discussion will include, but is not limited to:

plot
characters
motives
images
symbolism
theme
script
direction
screenwriter’s worldview
performance
cinematography
message
and… (drumroll, please) plot twist.

Especially when a plot twist is crucial to the story going forward, I don’t shy away from dissecting it.

Let this be my final word on spoilers —

It’s my prerogative and my judgment call to write about spoilers or not. Likewise, it’s your prerogative and your judgment call to give my spoiler-laden commentaries a miss or not.

  1. I love spoilers on your blog! They help me decide whether to watch a drama or not.

@packmule3, Thank yoou. Bring on the spoilers. I love spoilers. Most of all I get so much from reading your detailed analysis of these dramas that bring so much enrichment to the viewings. I think you can’t do what you do without including spoilers.

Hi @pkml3! you write as though there are readers of this blog who have complained about spoilers appearing in the threads. I take it that we are not privy to seeing the immense number of disgruntled emails that you receive (thank you for filtering them out from our view!).

I’m all for spoilers. I don’t mind them but as you’ve noticed, I’m sure, when I comment, I add spoiler tags as a warning for those who may mind. If they cannot resist the urge to read further, it’s not something we have control over.

The same is true for any and especially your posts. There’s no way to do a thorough review or analysis without spoilers. I much prefer to read (and at times write) more thorough than less thorough reviews!

Thank you for the ‘Readers Beware!’ warning. If this is not enough to keep out malcontented BoD readers from reading the spoilers, it’s definitely not your fault!!

  4. Bring the spoiler on! Love your first impression cos it helps me catch a glimpse of those dramas that are not my cup of tea, enough to satisfy my curiousity😁. And your spoilers are fun to read! 😘

  5. Your house your rules! Personally, I love spoilers! But that is besides the point! Your house your rules!

  6. @OAL and @Snowflower,

I responded to your posts but this blog “ate” it. But I couldn’t find it in the comment section. Oh well.

I can’t help spoilers because I often declare an opinion, then provide an explanation articulating my reasons for reaching that opinion. By necessity, my explanation will include examples from the plot or episode, and these examples will be regarded as spoilers by some readers/lurkers.

So spoilers for them are just facts of the case for me. 🙂

  7. Yes, @GB. I was cleaning my spam, trash, and pending inboxes a few nights ago when I noticed a handful of complaints about spoilers from “My First Impressions” series. Oh well… I can’t please everybody. 🙂

I think it’s because in other drama forums, there’s a spoiler tag (or function where a section of the comment is hidden).

I’m not a techie so I don’t know if there’s a spoiler tag in wordpress. But even if there is a spoiler function, can you imagine how my post (and yours, too) will look like when large swaths of text will be blacked out? Ugh. It’ll be eyesore.

  8. Kalimera @PAckmule3,

Most of the times, I am reading your “First Impressions” when I have watched the show, because I know how meticulous you are. Consequently, I am also not reading the comment section for the same reason, since most of the regulars B.o.D’ers are doing the same.

As @GB Unnie wrote above, we mostly tag with Spoilers below, but it is not a fault of ours who is reading after the warning.

Anyway, I am glad you are setting *your* rules on your blog. It is your Queendom anyway, so whoever comes along knows, exactly what to expect…

  9. @Packmule3, trying to write an intelligent analysis without giving spoilers can require enough verbal gyrations to make the comment almost unintelligible. I prefer thoughts set down clearly, over vague hints. Spoil away! We Bitches love reading your posts because you are so insightful. If your writing is constricted by fear of spoilers, you’d have to keep all those clever thoughts to yourself, and we’d be the losers.

  10. Howdy! 👋🏻

I’ve been in here for years and years and I’ve never minded the spoilers that you give. For me it was always welcomed. 😃

  11. Completely agree with @Welmaris – it is impossible to offer extended analysis without some element of ‘spoiler’.

I avoid things I know are spoilerish if I want to experience a show first hand. I think we all know to do that.

  12. @Packmule3, thanks for this post, and thanks for your spoilers! As someone who usually just watches one drama at a time, your spoilers help me choose what I want to spend 16 or so hours of my life watching.

Thank you for your spoilers, and thanks for all your first impressions! I really appreciate them! Please keep them coming.

This is YOUR blog, you make the calls. 🙂

    Sincerely,
    Hatlady
