What’s up with this guy? He’s always telling her to hang on tight.

This is one good reason I don’t resent the appearance of the ex-girlfriend ChungHa.

I want to know what happened in his previous relationship so I can determine if history will repeat itself. I want to know a) what the actual problem was, b) why he did not appear to step up, and instead chose to run away from ChungHa, and c) how he will treat DongJoo differently should a similar situation happen to them.

How people handle conflicts says a lot about them, and based on the flashbacks in Episodes 7 and 8, I’m not quite happy with the way TaeHee walked away from Chungha.

I agree with his uncle in this instance.

Uncle: What about the macarons?
TaeHee: Why are you carrying that around?
Uncle: Were they from ChungHa?
TaeHee: (pausing) No.
Uncle: It’s fine. I saw her leave that night.

The Uncle assumes that TaeHee hesitated to answer because he didn’t want to tell the truth.

Uncle: Usually, as you live, you find out eventually, “Oh I see why that happened now.” But sometimes, you don’t.
TaeHee: (no answer)

The Uncle believes that an individual can understand and evaluate past events more clearly with the passage of time. Hindsight is 20/20.

Uncle: ChungHa is probably like that. Time is probably not healing her. Wouldn’t it get worse for her?
TaeHee: (no response)

But the Uncle thinks that ChungHa doesn’t get the benefit of hindsight. When she looks back at the breakup, she still won’t have a clearer picture of the situation. That’s because, objectively speaking, there was no grounds for their breakup. From the Uncle’s perspective, their breakup didn’t make sense.

Uncle: She probably can’t understand why because there was no reason to break up.
TaeHee: (looks away)

As much as I like DongJoo’s uncle, the priest, trying to bring DongJoo and TaeHee together, I think he should tread cautiously until it’s certain that TaeHee is fully over his first love.

Let’s enjoy the show!Β

Wait, what happened? Did they cancel this week’s episodes because of soccer? Huh? Booooooo.

Oh well. I’ve more time to talk about Episode 8 then.

  1. Works for me so I can catch up with you all. πŸ˜„

Thank you for the new thread. πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

  2. Hurry up, @agdr03! So we can do our rewatch. πŸ™‚

  3. Yes Boss! πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸ’»

I am enjoying. Taehee is something else again ha? I finished episode 3 last night. ☺️

    I like the epilogues too.

  4. Old American Lady (OAL)

@packmule3, I reluctantly have to agree with you about holding off on a c relationship with DJ and TH. I would like it to happen only if his break with CH made sense. His first love is no villain, as far as we can see, so I hope we get to see what actually happened. I also want to know why he quit medicine. K Dramas have a lot of doctors who quit. We need to know more of his back story. Anyway, if he disappoints, he is not good enough for Dong Joo. Maybe we’ll find out that the cop is her OTP. That would be a surprise. Or maybe she’ll end up with nobody but finds inner strength and agency to live her best life(I actually hate that best life expression – there is something phoney, new agey, unauthrntuc about it -pseudo fashionable). But yeah, he has to prove that he is worthy of DJ.

  5. Epilogues?

Were there lots of epilogues? I think the first two episodes had an epilogue. But I’m not sure about the rest. Uh-oh. Did I accidentally skip them?

Anyway, I can watch “Summer Strike” during this break.

  6. Right, OAL?

His breakup with CH has to make sense. Right now, it’s tempting to put all the blame on CH and attribute the cause of their breakup to some sort of personal flaw (e.g., she’s needy, clingy, from a divorced family, not understanding enough, impatient, and so on).

But that’s not being fair to CH’s character. Just because she’s the “third wheel” doesn’t mean she’s the bad apple. We have to wait and see a bit more.

Lol. The Cop? He’s a funny guy.

  7. Oh episode 3 didn’t have any, yes. πŸ˜„

Was that the only epilogue then? Only in episodes 1 and 2?

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi All, I’m waiting for these 2 episodes as well. It took me a while, but I’ve come to like this show. At the end of I think all the episodes except Ep 3, there’s a preview to the next episode(s). I thought at first they were epilogues too, giving more info, but I believe they were all previews. I did a spot check on a few. πŸ™‚

  9. Kalimera ladies!

I do hope you are okay. Let us see what we will happen this week!

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo! How are you? I trust that you are well.

I’ve to wait until tomorrow to get the episodes with subs.

BTW, would you be interested to join @WE, @Feifei, @OAL and myself to rewatch Memories of the Alhambra?

  11. Hey @GB Unnie.

This time of the year is a bit stressful for me. I have deadlines to meet. I am okay, just tired.

I haven’t watched “Memories of the Alhambra” yet, but I might try to start it during Christmas if I find any free time. I will try to be there for the Rewatch Party, but I cannot promise it. There are some seminars I attend on Saturdays and I don’t know if that will change from January.

I do hope you are okay!

  12. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Thanks @Cleo, I’m very well.

As always @Cleo and Everyone!! the invitation to Rewatch Parties is open to all. Come if you can, stay for as long or short a time as you can, miss one day and come again another week. It’s all fine with our parties.

Tentatively we will start on 7 January 2023, if @pkml3 will open a thread for us. (*hint hint*)

  13. There’s a rewatch party for “Memories of Alhambra”?!

Okay. Just tell me the dates and time, and I’ll open the thread for you. πŸ™‚

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @pkml3!! Yes, I’ll give you the information on the Memories of the Alhambra Rewatch Party on the What are We Watching in December thread.

I’ve put out the notice a couple of times, in the hopes that you might see one of them. πŸ˜„

I think you were in the process of moving this thread up, so I could not post a ‘Reply’ to your email, but hopefully you’ll see this here.

  15. okay, @GB.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The episode title is ‘The Letter I Can’t Send’

Managed to watch in bits and pieces Ep 9. Yes, this episode definitely has an Epilogue. They play peekaboo with me, those epilogues. When I first watched, I thought I saw them… but when I went to look for them, I only saw the previews, and thought I was mistaken. Now I really saw the word ‘Epilogue’, which did add on a bit more to the story of the week.

This week, the firefighter who quit to run a store and take care of his sick daughter, and for whom Officer Seo seems to have a great degree of concern, appears briefly. Episode features his daughter more.

Officer Seo – It’s nice to see a guy actually say that he wants to be a father of a harmonious family. Unfortunately he does not have a proper awareness of what it is to be in a committed love relationship yet, since he thinks he’s already in love with DJ whom he barely knows.

Officer Seo and So Ra should shake hands on this aspect, because So Ra too thinks she’s in love with Il Seob when she hardly knows him. So Ra and Officer Seo would make a nice couple actually!!

DJ was affected by Chung Ha’s territorial attitude towards Tae Hee. Her angry advice to So Ra to stop and consider that Il Seob was still deep in a relationship with his ex-gf, and that So Ra would have no chance with him, was obviously a reprimand towards herself.

I still feel both kind of sorry for Chung Ha and annoyed with her. She really deserves better treatment in terms of a proper explanation and closure for the break-up. I can’t blame her for not understanding, but in the same situation, I think my pride would have gotten me to let go long ago and not cling so pathetically.

Tae Hee’s sense of guilt is a bit beyond what I can understand. His feeling that he has no right to be happy reminds me of the kdrama, ‘Suspicious Housekeeper’. She totally refused to smile at all because she had been ‘cursed’ to never be happy again and she’d agreed to it out of guilt. Even if TH had been careless or irresponsible, there was no reason to punish himself indefinitely. But the fact is that he did not deliberately cause his brother’s death. He seems to link his happiness with Chung Ha to the death of his brother and is denying himself the former.

Until now, my puzzlement still remains. What kind of love did TH have for Chung Ha that he could sacrifice it all so completely and say definitely that he’d never come back to her. Although he says that he does not want to put the blame on CH, his behaviour towards her seems to say otherwise. He freezes up with her and looks annoyed. If she is not in the wrong, he’d be more conflicted. He’d be feeling bad for still caring about her and that’s why he distances himself, so that he won’t be with her and be happy. But here, it’s the opposite. He seems to avoid her because she makes him unhappy. Being with her seems like the real punishment.

Following the title of this episode – It’s nice to see that the dead girl’s desire to send her letter got DJ to be honest with herself and to also make a stand to ‘send her letter’ to TH. I must at least commend CH for continually sending out clear signals/her letters to TH, and So Ra for sending her gifts/like letters to Il Seob. Seems like the girls in this show have a lot of initiative. πŸ˜„

  17. Kalimera Ladies and let’s have a great December!

I enjoyed last night’s episode. I really liked it because both TaeHee and Dong Joo had to realize that they have been falling in love with each other for some time now.

At the same time, from Episode 8 Tak Chung-Ha is violating TaeHee’s boundaries. Before that I didn’t want to say that, but from what we have see so far, the girl doesn’t take NO as an answer…TaeHee said they are over so many times now.

How is it possible to say “I will wait for you?”

What to wait for? Let him go and move on! This is not a healthy relationship.
I believe she is clinging on him, because he was the ray of sunshine in her grey world. She has many issues to solve with her mother and herself.

She has an unhealthy way to love someone and it is understandable. She needs therapy though. She has to accept and forgive the relationship she has with her mother and love herself first. The other doctor is obviously in love with her, but she is stuck in the past.

Let us see how that it will go. I loved that Dong Joo siezed the day…

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

This Show is exploring the themes of living and dying without guilt/regret, wounded-ness and healing in a big way.

The Writer has placed the characters in frequent contact with the church and the priest, Fr Michael, to provide the connections that can make healing possible. It seems the Writer wants the action to play out against a Roman Catholic backdrop, but I’d like to see if Show can do more with the what the Church has to offer.

Prayer: Dong Joo is frequently in the confessional, not so much to confess her sins, but to get advice from her uncle. In the process she does end up sort of praying for the souls whom she promised to serve, and Fr Michael includes them in his prayers. Even DJ’s Buddhist dad asks Fr Michael to pray for DJ.

The Cross: When Chung Ha accosts Tae Hee over being the uninvited one, she uses the words “Why do you have to be the one carrying the cross?” which is a reference to the self-sacrificing act of Jesus Christ who took on the sins of the world by accepting death on the cross. It’s an interesting choice of words.

Confession: The image of the cross and what the confessional symbolise is the willingness of the penitent to unload his sins, to be truly contrite, and to make reparation so that he starts afresh, reconciled to the community and to the persons who were hurt. Through the Rite of Reconciliation (Confession) he would have been fully forgiven, unfettered by the past, able to heal.

But in TH’s case, this is not happening because he refuses to forgive himself. He wants to continue as the sinner who must do penance forever. He has taken upon himself an unnecessary cross, made himself an unforgiving judge over his sinfulness, and condemned himself to be miserable. Besides a sense of guilt, I feel that there’s the problem of arrogance or pride. TH is acting as if he’s God. As long as he won’t let go, he will not be at peace. There was a saying I used to hear, ‘Let go and let God be God.’ I want TH to figure this out by series end.

Although TH tells his uncle that he is afraid to be happy and to forget the wrongs he had done, we see that he actually does forget this when he is with DJ. He repeatedly asks if they can have meals together, tries to spend time with her and is happier interacting with her than normal. Hence there’s lots of hope for him yet.

BTW, did we ever hear the reason in Ep 8, for why uncle Vincent brought TH to the church? TH asked what they were doing there but Vincent spun his own story about not getting his wishes fulfilled. Still he continued into the church making the Sign of the Cross. Was it because he’d arranged with Fr Michael to get DJ and TH to meet up for lunch?

  19. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, I was commenting on the in ability of TH to forgive himself, but you’ve brought up a good point. Chung Ha too is unhealthily stuck in the past and burdened. They way she is with TH now, is not love but a kind of almost obsession. We see this quite often with love triangles and the 2nd Leads who insist on waiting, when it’s clear that they are unwanted.

I expect this drama to end on a healing note, with everyone, including Chung Ha and Officer Seo, and maybe even DJ’s father, being more at peace.

  20. Old American Lady (OAL)

@Cleopatra, I think TH and CH had a relationship where to use an American expression, they were phoning it in. I think he liked her more and she took his love for granted. We still don’t know the whole story. That seems to explain why CH is so shocked. TH is a given for her. I also have a feeling that she is not holding up her side of the relationship. I also think CH is a straw man compared to DJ (comparison is inevitable). We have lots of time to see how all of this played out so I hope we get plausible answers. I love DJ. I am invested in her character. Her character is the epitome of goodness. She deserves a happy ending(and also, I want to know why she quit ping pong-this story is still unresolved).

  21. Hey Unnie!

I really like the fact that it is a healing drama. Yes, for me CH is in an obsession mode. And she said they were dating for 10 years, but when she answered to the nurses’ questions – in the flashback- she said they had lost touch and found themselves after ten years. So, I am a bit confused about that dating 10 years period.

I read in the afternoon that you posted something on forgiveness. I will read it again and comment later on!

  22. My dear @OAL,

I think you are kinda right. Tae Hee and Chung Ha’s relationship was not healthy. I just finished watching Episode 10 and by her mother’s omission, she grew her up to be a princess and get what she wanted. So, this slip of tongue means that CH is following around TH, not because she is in love with him, but because he says NO to her.

Mother and daughter have HUGE issues and need both therapy by the way. The irony they are both doctors… *facepalm*

I am very fond of Dong Joo because she is a true ray of sunshine. I like her for her smile, but that has to do with Hyeri basically! πŸ˜€

  23. Kalispera my dear chingus!

I just finished watching Episode 10 and I liked it from the beginning until the ending. Finally, we had some progress…*grins*

@Packmule3 you are going to like the ending, I am pretty sure! *winks*

*sighs* I am happy at the moment!

  24. @Cleopatra,

Will I like the ending? Or better yet will @agdr03 like the ending? πŸ˜‚

  25. @Packmule3,

@agdr03 will definitely like the ending!!!
You, on the other hand, will also like what the jakkanim used in that ending, because you have commented on it. 😁

  26. @Cleopatra,

I have written about it? Huh?πŸ€”

I’ll watch the show now. I intended to watch it earlier but pushed it back so I could finish my Christmas shopping list first. 🎁

  27. @Packmule3,

I know you don’t mind spoilers, but I think you need to watch it first. I have watched the beginning and the ending of the episode three times. They did an excellent job!

  28. @Cleo is right. I’m happy with the ending, yes. ☺️

The point is to follow your heart. This is for DJ only though, not for CH.

I’m up to date so we can do a rewatch maybe next week? Thursday as usual? Let me know.

My favourite episode is 7 so far.

I’ll comment more later. Busy, busy and busy. 😊

  29. Okay, @agdr03.

Let me check tomorrow if my Thursday morning is open.

I know for sure that I have dinner receptions on Wednesday and Thursday (ugh. start of the holiday parties again) so chances are I have a late start on Thursday morning. πŸ™‚

  30. Old American Lady (OAL)

@packmule3, Wow! You finished your Christmas Shopping. Given your busy life and your commitment to BOD, you continue to impress. I hope Santa is good to you too!

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Cleo, my fave couple are Fr Michael and uncle Vincent LOL. Two ahjusshi matchmakers who are so proud/happy to see DJ and TH holding hands. Even DJ’s dad is all for the relationship. It’s nice to see so much support from family for a relationship. These bunch of 3 ahjusshis will make a fine bromance.

I like that Officer Seo is upfront about his feelings with DJ. Aside from his strange reaction to Joon Ho’s accident, he seems like a nice guy. i would still like it if he and So Ra could get together.

I forgot that everyone is sort of connected. So Officer Seo recognises Chung Ha from the time she saved the driver in the accident. He seems surprised to see her at the hospital.

I recall that in Healer, the errand service was normally done in disguise, so Healer was not known/could not be exposed. In this show, there seems to be a rather small circle of people who happen to know each other, therefore being an errand guy who’s recognisable is pretty risky. Lies will be outed in no time.

Tae Hee: I see what you mean about @pkml3’s first episodes comments coming to resolution. It was on TH taking money for hurting DJ (when he ‘broke up’ with her for that lousy ex-bf) and now he apologises for it at the end of this episode 10. It has come round full circle and he has grown. He has learnt that there are some jobs one should never do.

Dong Joo: I like that when TH first rejected DJ, she was concerned that he was not telling her the truth about not liking her, instead of just saying in a clingy way that she didn’t believe him. The next day she told him that she appreciated that it had been hard for him to do the rejecting. She also rejected Officer Seo clearly and gently, appreciating his effort in telling her. Her thoughtfulness is so unlike Chung Ha.

  32. @OAL,

Remember I was out of the country last month? When I had time, I hit the local stores and went shopping. Not only was shopping a therapy/stress reliever for me but I liked getting unique Xmas gifts for my family and friends. For example, I got matching aprons for my son and his Korean fiancΓ©e that resembled king and queen hanboks.

Also, during the long layovers, I dropped by the duty-free shops at the airport and got more gift items, like cosmetics, perfumes, and liquor.

I waited for Black Friday and Cyber Monday to get items that couldn’t be bought overseas (mostly gadgets from Best Buy and Costco) and had to be customized (like an embosser for my brother who just moved houses, dog tags for the furry babies, and funky Christmas sweaters).

But today, December 1 was my deadline for all the rest on my list. πŸ™‚

There’s really nothing to it because I have a list.

And you know, there are also disadvantages to finishing Xmas shopping early. For instance, I’ll buy something BEFORE Thanksgiving because it’s advertised as 50% off, only to find out that it’s 75% off on Cyber Monday. Sigh.

Or I’ll buy something in November for Person X only to find out on December 22 that somebody else thought of getting the same thing for Person X. Arggggh!

  33. Old American Lady (OAL)

@packmule3,you are still the epitome of organization to me. And you are a thoughtful gift giver. You may want to check your credit card to see if they’ll allow you to price match with lower prices
Some do and it saves money.i love giving gifts. I’ve had some fun finding things that strike other people’s fancy. Hats off to you for using your free time on your business trip to get the ball rolling and for meeting your deadline.

  34. Kalimera @Packmule3,

I was tired last night and I missed the part when you wrote about the Christmas shopping list. I read what you and @OAL have written in the meantime.
Wow! Bravo for finishing that task!

@OAL I second that what you said about the epitome of organization! πŸ˜€

  35. Kalimera @GB Unnie,

I deliberately didn’t say anything about them as well. None of you have watched the episode yet. While it was available for me on Prime!

I have to say Fr. Michael and Vincent made me laugh out loud as well. Their scene was so fun! I have watched it thrice!

Officer Seo is a good man indeed. There is something we don’t know, but I think that he remembers CH from back then. We shall see if they have another connection!

I still believe that Officer Seo and SoRa are a better match and I believed that since the beginning! *grins*

Indeed Tae Hee has come a full circle from Episode 1 to Episode 10. He formally apologized for all the things that burdened him. I really like that the groom talked to him and told him not to regret anything later on.

It is so obvious that they like each other. You can feel the vibes from both of them. If strangers can see it, at least they came into a point that they need to address it as well.

As for DJ’s ex boyfriend, I am glad that TaeHee reacted. What a piece of garbage. – I wanted to write something worse, but good manners come first…

Tae Hee was taking on every insult for himself, but the moment the ex started spreading lies for Dong Joo, TH couldn’t take it any longer and punched him.

Dong Joo is a good person, not for the things she does with the Souls, but also how she addresses things. The way she handled Officer Seo speak volumes. She is kind and takes into consideration others.

Yes, Dong Joo and Chung Ha are the opposites of a coin.

The scene that made me cringe was TaeHee with CH’s mom. What a nerve! Some people think that with their money, they can buy everything and everyone. Just because!

I don’t know if you read what I have written to @OAL last night, but the more I think about it, CH is indeed chasing after TH because he constantly says NO to her and it is a first for her. After all she is a princess, according to her mom. *facepalm*

That incident was the catalyst that Tae Hee apologized later to Dong Joo.
He realized that he didn’t want to be that person that hurts other people, like he did in Episode 1 with Dong Joo or manipulates or does something as a task because he got paid for it.

…and is the reason I like this drama. I get to see character development and the healing vibes are indeed high!

  36. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Cleo
Yes, everyone thinks that DJ and TH suit each other and that they have an attraction for each other, so it’s ridiculous if the couple themselves continue to deny it. I’m glad show did not delay the inevitable and had both the rejection and the apology in the same episode.

I agree with all your points and deplore both CH’s mother, and DJ’s ex-bf who use money and people. CH’s mother wants to manipulate people through money and ex-bf pays to get someone else to break up for him. That is the epitome of meanness, rudeness and a total lack of regard for others.

Yes, I did read your reply to @OAL about Chung Ha. From what her mother says, she seems to have an entitlement issue ie she thinks she’s super entitled to whatever she wants, for as long as she wants it. She has to be the one to reject something and no one is allowed to reject her. I gather that’s what her mother meant.

So we can conclude that what CH is doing is not pining over a lost love but a deliberate attack to not lose in the game of who gets rejected. So from the nice, conscientious doctor that she first appeared to be, will we now be witnessing her turn into a shrew? Like the typical 2nd leads who work all kinds of evil machinations to get what they want?

Truly the only good thing from the ex-bf’s appearance in the show was that his sarcastic comments got TH to act when nothing else had worked. He has been dithering on the side, avoiding DJ. That and the bridegroom’s advice to not regret finally got through to him. Yes, I also liked that he properly apologised for being such an unfeeling moron in the past.

BTW, did you understand what the bridegroom was referring to when he spoke to TH at the end? He said : “It wasn’t good, but I thought this would protect Da Min. Well, now we will have to go at it head-on. I regret not doing that from the beginning.”

By ‘It’ was he referring to the marriage that he knew they were entering under false pretenses that the bride was rich?

It’s better that the bridegroom and bride go at it head-on with the truth now and not end up like the dead who have unresolved issues/regrets. In the same vein, DJ and So Ra made their love confessions so that they would not regret. Recalling the title of episode 9, those were letters that they were able to send while still alive. And the title of this episode, ‘I Can See Your Lies” is apt for how DJ told herself that she did not want to lie to herself anymore, and that’s why she confessed. She also saw TH’s lies but did not call him out on them.

I’ve been noticing all the scenes/screenshots where there’s a path or choice to walk for our protagonists. I like the camerawork and took a few screenshots:
    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PfdVDAlFxZq5exooE80_OKnzx4kKcjQD/edit?usp=share_link&ouid=107152512466791964570&rtpof=true&sd=true

The best one was where TH stood facing the camera with the wide open path and doors before him. His path was clear, his decision was being made.

  37. Unnie, thank you for the scenes / screenshots.

The director and the photography director are doing a great job giving us scenes with significance!

Regarding your question about the groom. I remember the ex-garbage gossiping with the other guys, that the groom seemed “loaded”. Something about him being a civil servant Class 5, while they were all Class 9.

My guess is that they both lied about the bride’s rich friend and boyfriend.

I really like that the jakkanim give us a title and a theme per episode. I have written before that in that sense it reminds me of “Our Beloved Summer”.

    As for CH :
I hope the jakkanim won’t take the shrew road for her. If I was writing that character, I would pinpoint the rotten beliefs her mother has and how that affected her. She could be a spoilt brat up to a point. She should stop pining and moping for something that is long dead and move on. She needs to do thepapy ASAP. If she stays in the “Princess” Mode throught the series then she is a caricature, that’s why I don’t want that for her.

For me, her character should grow out of the misery she is in to.

She should set boundaries to her mother and move out of her house. She is a grown woman and cannot afford an apartment to be near the hospital she workds for?
She says that she is sick of her mother’s boyfriends, but she is part of the charade. She is indeed her mother’s daughter, because she cannot take off the “Princess” mode. Her car is a german one.

What I am saying is that up until Episode 10, CH is indeed a “Princess” and she doesn’t want to change at all. Hence, she is following around Tae Hee, because she is mirroring her own mother. Her current boyfriend was an ex, if you remember…

So, the mother is “buying” herself boyfriends, and the daughter is following around a man that doesn’t want her and cannot be bought at the same time.

Tae Hee is “my precious”…! *winks*

I have to applaude the jakkanim for switching this “model” in the feminine side of the road. We mostly know the males doing something like that.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Cleo, like you, I’d also like all the characters to display growth before the end of the series. Then it would be a very satisfying healing drama.

WRT Chung Ha, we might use the proverb spoken by Jesus himself: “Physician heal thyself.” “The moral of the proverb in general, containing within itself also a criticism of hypocrisy, is to attend to one’s own defects before those in others.” – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physician,_heal_thyself

She is a much wounded person and needs healing too. If she cannot get out of the rut on her own, yes, she needs therapy. She seems to have no friends or support system. With CH, I’m always on the fence about whether to feel sorry for her or not. She seems a victim also with that kind of mother and upbringing. I guess growing up with that mother, she automatically was raised to enable people to treat her like a princess.

TH must have done that and pandered to her sense of self-worth. Having him reject her is a slap in the face: a judgement on her value in her eyes.

So did TH just suddenly realise he never loved CH? From wanting to give her the ring to calling off their relationship, it was too sudden … was it just guilt and the desire to punish himself that led to this sharp turnabout in his ‘love’ for CH? He’s not like the ex-garbage boyfriend who treats the gf badly… so it puzzles me. That’s the puzzle I’m hoping to unravel.

Dear All, I agree with all of your comments. @GB, I also still don’t completely understand TH’s reaction to CH. I had thought that she had done something very hurtful. She IS selfish and she IS like a princess. To me the best thing CH’s mother did was tell her that TH has moved on to someone else, even if it hadn’t quite happened yet. That allows CH to move past questions and guilt to self-righteous anger. Hopefully anger will move on to acceptance.

Did anyone notice the T-shirt TH was wearing in ep. 9 at about 29.22 when Dong Joo got off work early and they met outside the house? The back said, and I quote, “You’r My Wonderwall”. A bit of a rabbit hole tour later, I think it was a good choice for a T-shirt quote. ‘Wonderwall Music’ was (Beatle) George Harrison’s debut solo album, a fusion of Western and Indian music. Wonderwall is described a division between two contrasting worlds, reality and fiction. Tae Hee has been stuck in a grieving mind-set that made him feel guilty and miserable about almost everything, when the reality we viewers and other characters can see is that it was, as Vincent says, an accident.

Later, the band Oasis used the word Wonderwall in a song to describe a supportive friend – a tower of strength, which some think is a girlfriend. According to the songwriter Noel Gallagher, the song describes “an imaginary friend who’s gonna come and save you from yourself “. And since the only ‘you’ in the song goes on to become the ‘Wonderwall’, it must refer to something/someone who will always be there for you and save you. It’s a song about things coming to a head and changing a life around. It’s more than just a love song. It could be about Dong Joo who is understanding and supportive, but it is mainly about Tae-hee himself who must stop hiding and make the changes to regain his life’s potential.

You’re gonna be the one that saves me
    And after all,
    You’re my wonderwall.

@Fern, thanks for explaining ‘Wonderwall’ and for the link to the song. I noticed it but did not do any research on it. It adds more richness to understanding how things can pan out.

I like the idea of being saved from oneself and that since the only person who can definitely be there at all times to do the saving of one, is oneself, then Tae Hee should be his own Wonderwall.

Yes, I’d like very much to see less pathetic CH. She needs to go through the whole process of grieving a loss, including the anger part and get over TH. I liked her as the competent doctor who bothered with a homeless man, and not as a clingy girlfriend out to stake territory with DJ at every opportunity, or making a fool of herself over a man who does not want her.
