I like their level-headedness and their calm dating style. Please don’t make me compare them to the main characters in “Crash Landing on You.” lol.

Yes, he preened! Great description. When I see Bai Jing Ting in a doorway or silhouetted as he was on that deck wearing his working clothes, I keep thinking what @packmule3 said in our first watch: that he has the smallest waist. It’s something about how he lets his full shirt flare out above his belt. He looks like he has a smaller waist than Sandra Ma.

Yes, @Fern, I always stare at BJT’s waist in wonder (and some consternation). Is it possible for a grown man to have a waist so tiny… is it healthy… and yes it looks smaller than any of the ladies’ waists! I hope he does not starve himself. I feel he should beef himself up, actually…but no need to show bare chest. LOL.
Yes, @GrowingBeautifully, it is possible for a grown man to have a small waist. My husband was an example, when we first met and married decades ago. Hubby’s measurements have since changed, although he’s not considered overweight.
BJT has a slim waistline that’s accentuated by his sturdy shoulders. His body is in proportion, because his hips are also narrow. From the looks of him, I suspect he has a low body fat percentage. I also suspect he works out frequently, because he does have enviable upper body strength. The uniform he wears, with loosely fitted shirt tucked into belted pants, draws attention to his waist. When he’s in a historical drama such as New Life Begins, with voluminous costuming, his physique is much less noticeable.
I’ve jumped way ahead in my rewatch of YAMH because I’m enjoying it so much, and have used it as filler while waiting for subtitles to be completed on other dramas I’m watching. Even though I remember much of this show, it is good to revisit it. Part of my enjoyment watching both times is to learn about subjects unfamiliar to me. This show has somewhat the quality of documentary to it. It is also China telling a story about itself: here’s how we think, here’s what we do, these are our values. Do I agree with everything depicted and unquestionably swallow what might be propaganda? Not necessarily. But exposing myself to another worldview is not a bad thing if I don’t let go of my own judgment.

There is a behind the scenes on Viki that shows Bai Jing Ting working out a bit before a scene. I think that @pm3 said that she saw an interview when he said he wanted muscles for the role but not too much after seeing how the real SWAT team members looked.
As to the others, I could see with Vin Zhang in ‘She Was Pretty’ that he looked muscular. I knew about Lay because he is famous for his dancing. He looks fit as if from that mainly. Jackson, too. He did a funny and revealing interview in Korea recently with Eric Nam, so the interview is in both English and Korean. I am intrigued by Jing Cha who it says did Latin ballroom. Wow.

@Kate, regarding ways to watch and comment, I currently can’t access BoD on the browser Microsoft Bing. It says “Request Header Fields Too Large.” I get this from time to time. But I can use Bing to watch the drama on Viki. I am going to Google to comment, so have 2 windows open at once. I worked well enough last week.

I love the dynamic in the opening scene. Xing Kelei says nothing at all. Shu Wenbo does all of the talking but you have the impression that he’s reading XK’s words. XK walks until he stands directly in front of Mi Ka. Her facial expressions are great. She can’t meet his eyes, but you can see that she’s losing hope as her name doesn’t get called.
Ooh icy and frosty sounds dangerous… even on the normal dry pavement I can slip and fall!

@Fern, MK does tend to get emotional. KL is more practical. They complement each other.
However it’s her warm feelings that get her to help without fear or without giving in to her fears.

On my phone now. Yes, XK seems oddly uncomfortable with first aid. We can see that he’s genuinely concerned about her.
I find his small sideways smile so cute. He’s amused but does not want to laugh out loud. He notes that she’s not afraid of his scolding.
She can’t believe that he will let her rest the next day, and then continue training.
Then she finds fault with him for turning his back on her for sneezing. LOL he’s got no tenderness for women? He’s got a strong fighting spirit but he’s afraid of a cold LOLOL.

@Kate, I thought that was a normal piggyback. We don’t see it over here so one time when there was a couple who piggibacked past my home I wanted to laugh and ask if they were from Korean or China etc LOL. I didn’t!!!

Xiao Xia is punishing Wenbo for his comments about Mi Ka. But it IS so much fun to watch him go down the building almost like spiderman.
Wen Bo’s character development was not too well drawn out, but at least he did demonstrate some growth.
Hah! He gets punched by KL for his distraction and then he’s the one who’s late after scolding QX for being late. She punishes him by making him redo the rappelling multiple times eventhough it was not necessary after the 3rd time, I think. I didn’t count… he did that like 8 times?

Only to find out that it has aggravated an old injury, then he apologises for his early words and even sends her a pirate copy of her eye shadow that broke when her suitcase opened. Lol. Good man, albeit very awkward.
@Fern in real show shooting, I think they may really have had to redo that shoot many times, but maybe with a stand in actor.
QX feels bad that she made him strain his injured shoulder.
Mi Ka knows to check and replenish missing equipment for the mountain rescue drill. Like a boy scout, always prepared.
I’m sure it was a stunt double who did it. Really dangerous stuff if done wrong.
LOL yes, @Fern… at least he got her a fake replacement eye shadow. I like the shades in the palette!!
@Fern, MK was pretty impressive in this emergency training starting before the sun rises.
KL was observing her a lot.
In the emergency exercise, their team 5 arrived first but ended up last. KL notes that MK did notknow how to tie the rope. He give her his gloves without a word and helps her out a bit. I wonder if anyone even noticed.
I saw that he purposefully put her into his group. She was great at triage, too. Took charge but with agreement between the team. Her other co-worker didn’t get the importance of the exercise, just wanted to finish first.
@Fern, yes, especially the competitive friend of hers. She was only out to get ahead at all costs. In the end Team 5 got more points although they ended last.
Ha, she gets Li Nian to help her learn the knots. Much to XK’s dismay. I think she didn’t want to bother XK, but he took it personally. Haha, MK flatters Li Nian by telling him that the girls think he’s handsome.
LOL MK thinks KL needs psychological assessment for blowing hot and cold with her… actually he’s been consistent, but she only notices/sees him at the extreme ends after she makes mistakes or does well.
The drama is setting that friend up to be her competitor in later episodes.
Ha, XK is pretty ruthless with his men. First the gut punch to Wenbo, then a hard flip with Li Nian.
@Fern, that’s the way KL ‘trains-punishes’ the guys in ‘play’.
He’s so put out when she shares food with the other guys right behind him LOLOL.
Wen Bo is such a fuddy duddy… no flexibility at all at this stage. QX gets him all worked up, and he photo bombs her selfie.
Then he surprises her by taking a shot of her that makes her look tall. Finally she’s impressed in a more positive way.
@GB, I think in his professional role, XK is very skilled, but privately his maturity isn’t close. But MK is similar. Nothing comes between her and her professional goals.
@Fern, maybe the same can be said for the WB and QX couple. They are too professional and not mature when it comes to boy-girl relationships.

I had the feeling that QX has had a load of boyfriends but WB has had no girlfriends at all. In terms of knowing how to interact with the opposite sex, she is way ahead of him. However, his innocence and sincerity will carry him.

Yes, poor MK should have told everyone that she was afraid of heights. It was amazing though that she still got herself off the roof of the building.
Gosh, did you see QX sniff his shirt? Then WB says that she’s pretty without makeup.
I can relate to MK’s fear of heights. I can get used to heights after a while, but at first glance, I feel like the surface beneath my feet is tipping downwards.

XK gives clear and logical explanation of why he can’t give MK a certificate. The swat team can’t be rescuing the doctors as well as the general public. She agrees with him.
Again she tells him that she isn’t that fragile. His face when she says SWAT uncle. Lol.

@GB, I like that he was looking for some piece of tanned skin. Personally I don’t think he succeeded.
At the party, he keeps looking for her. We see that QX is still wearing WB’s shirt. It does not look like she’ll give that t-shirt back to him.
MK teases her about her past boyfriends. QX considers WB her hero that she fell love with in an instant.
We need to find a way to sync next time …lol

I’m laughing at QX’s description of the list of former boyfriends: “Those are heroes riding on colorful auspicious clouds.” MK teases QX and WB by saying ‘Couples Uniform’. I love the naturalness of the dialog.

I like how KL was only too eager to get WB to sit with QX because that gave him the chance to be near MK.
Now we get the games where the trainees get to punish KL.
Yes, the camera goes all heroic on MK, so she looks like a legendary beauty. Hair gently blowing, head tilted…then someone pushes her. I think Sandra Ma suggested this move.
XKL was very gracious about his punishment.

Hah @Kate you’re at the end already. I’m just enjoying the sweet honey trap gaze of MK and KL. I think MK got a little affected by his gaze and with some help in pushing her into his arms, his heart rate finally rose high enough.
It’s only after the party that the real rescue has to take place, and all the reservations about MK’s ability to do an emergency rescue while facing her greatest fears are overcome.
So smart of XK to attach the truck to his vehicle’s winch, to put rocks in front of the tires as blocks and to deflate the back tires to stabilise it. I wondered how the emergency workers got the man out eventually.
XK becomes a human bridge.
As long as she can focus on the medical aspects, MK is okay.
So exciting, I’d forgotten how stress-filled the rescue was.

I wonder what she did to get the injured man to spit out the blood in his lungs.
Ha, after XL tells MK not to vom on his car, she accuses him AGAIN of not being human. She points out her own bravery and asks if he can praise her a little. He’s not used to being asked for praise by his co-workers as it’s all in the line of duty. He very quietly says it was awesome.
Then MK notices the blood on his head and he ends up with a lovely pink bandage. Her face as she’s trying not to laugh.
LOL he’s so miserly with his compliments! He’s rewarded with a pink camisole bandage. LOL that he actually keeps it on without protest!
@Fern and @GB – I originally only wanted to re-watch the first 2 episodes.
So I am happy to watch eps 5 and 6 – if there is demand. Because they are still getting to know one another.
Alternatively, if anyone else has a favourite episode, we could go with that.

Commander Hao is quick to figure out that XKL is interested in MK. He speaks from experience then to say that having a relationship with a doctor is difficult.
@Kate, I think it’s just the refreshing speed and Internet connection. I refresh all the time and I go through the emails to see who’s written what. I may pause the show in the middle to read or type at times, like now.
So we end with another rescue in a stuck lift. That will be for another week.

@GB, MK said the driver might have pneumothorax, but which I think she means a bleed into the lungs which would prevent him from breathing? She had said that glass lacerated his lungs, so if she took the glass out, the blood would come out as if under pressure. Sort of the same thing that they will do in the elevator next episode. I’m not a medic, though. Perhaps someone who knows can elaborate.
I’m happy to do 5&6. As you say, Kate, it shows how the relationships progress in ‘real life’ situations. Should we try to think of some of our favourite scenes/episodes after that?

Saying hi here! I won’t be able to join you all for the rewatch but that I had enjoyed this drama even though I watched a lot sped up. This was my 2nd BaiJingTing drama..now slowly watching New Life Begins.
For a rather skinny guy, he doesn’t have the very bulked up look, but he is nimble and the uniform looks really good on him and I loved that scene where he saved her from the bomb when they first met. It was so cool. So many parts where they save each other.
I also loved the countdown calender, not sure if you watched all the way there.
Re the ‘If apologies worked…’ quotation it also occurs in the Chinese adaptation with Dylan Wang covered in cake spitting out the same words in Ep 1 at 25′, 12”.
I’ll have to check if the quotation goes back to the Taiwanese version that many people consider to be the gold standard. Unfortunately the sound quality isn’t great if you watch it on Youtube … but F4 are spectacular!!

I wonder if the apology-police quote is an axiom that spans generations and cultures. Aside from the various Meteor Garden versions, which drew from the same source material, I’m not surprised to see the phrase show up in different countries in which the Chinese language had a lot of influence. Just like how memes go viral today, a pithy saying like that could spread by word of mouth.
I was enjoying my second watch of YAMH so much that I blew through the whole drama and finished it last night. It’s nice to revisit such wholesome characters. *SPOILER* Even the self-absorbed and hurtful Yan Shan gets her redemptive arc.
The locked-eyes contest between XKL & MK has scientific reasons why they’d respond physically and emotionally. Just Google the phrase “staring eyes love” to find many articles based on research. I imagine the real-world screenwriter and the reel-world doctors at the training camp are aware of this phenomenon. In this case, it helped that XKL was already attracted to MK. He’s also inexperienced in the romance department, so shy behind his bravado.
@Fern, I would get the same message when trying to access BOD in Chrome. Sometimes it helps to clear all your cookies and search history. But for several months I’ve been using the Opera web browser solely for BOD, and haven’t had that problem appear.
Thanks for the tech advice, @Welmaris. I can respond to BoD posts on Chrome, so I use that although I can use my embedded browser for watching. They seem to switch back and forth for me. I’ll try Opera if I can’t reply on either the others.
