Enjoy the rewatch!
Woohoo!!! That’s good news @pkml3! I hope your flight gets in real early LOL. Thanks for the thread!
Super early reminder: Memories of Alhambra Rewatch will start on Saturday 7 January 2023.
Thank you, @packmule3. I’m looking forward to it.
Thank you @Packmule3 – hope you can join us!
Shall we gather at 10 pm and then start at 10.05pm GMT and equivalents – on the dot so that we are in sync?
Just a thought because it is difficult with the rate at which our messages appear in the discussion to confirm that we are there.
Hi @Kate, yes we can meet on time and arrange to start at the same time. We should also agree that we start only after the opening credits.
However, there’s this thing about pausing to comment, or speeding up the show for parts that do not need attention, so it’s quite normal for us to not be in sync. 🙂
@GB – thank you for adding that caveat! I am a re-watch newbie and am grateful for the perspective of an experienced re-watcher. Smile.
Ok, let’s gather at 10pm GMT time today and then set off, missing the opening credits at 10.05pm GM time.
When we get to Episode 6, shall we just continue, jumping the credits? I think that’s what we did last time by default.
I will accept the randomness after that! Part of my professional background is live broadcasts on radio… can you tell?? haha
@Kate, how interesting! So keeping everyone on the mark to work in synchrony so that there were no empty pauses on radio should have been a ‘piece of cake’ compared to us on BOD coming in willy-nilly and never knowing if our comments were crossing each others in hyperspace!
Hello, All. Just back from a quick trip to the Midlands and Bristol. I should be free this evening, barring some strange family quirk. See you then!
@Fern, I’m looking forward to chatting with you in about 9 hours time!
@GB – working on live radio creates a terrible tendency to over plan and arrive everywhere very early because you have built in delays! All plans include ‘spread’ time where an item takes longer than anticipated so you get on this roller coaster and hope with judicious actions that you don’t ‘crash the pips’ or end up with dead time pre pips- as you mentioned!
Kate, I’m a bit obsessed like that about longer distance travel, but not day-to-day local trips.
I hope that you enjoyed the party your sister invited you to attend. I was worried about your feet!
@Fern – haha! Thank you for your kind concern.
I ended up walking there (it’s a semi-rural town on the edge of fields and hills) in lace up pumps and then – rather ostentatiously – got my feet into these shoes with cotton wool balls stuffed into the black socks!!
I walked around a bit gingerly – especially when carrying plates of food -but only had one near miss when I wobbled into a sideboard but didn’t fall over!!
The meal was great fun – loads of courses, and lots of jollity. The hostess made it a themed event and she chose Emily Bronte for the inspiration behind the decor etc
Unfortunately, my sister tested Covid positive two and a bit days later… by that time I had left her home. Poor thing has been very unwell. I am testing regularly now too. We think it was a guy who sat between us with a very obvious cough and sniffle going on…
@Kate, I think I’d be over-stressed about filling up the time just right in that kind of job. I like things to be relaxed with lots of flexibility if possible. I looked up the pips on the hour, LOL. I’d be crashing them ever so often, because I’m not one to exert much control over other people. 😬 😥 😓 😠 🤯
@GB – you made me laugh happily! Yes, that type of work brings out the latent or not so latent control freak in one and you do operate on adrenalin. I wouldn’t do that type of work now.
Hi @Kate and @Fern, I’m awake and online. I’ll go get myself a bite and will be back before 5 minutes past the hour!
Hello, I’m here and setting up my computer to be able to comment and watch.
Kate, I hope that you don’t catch Covid, or if you do, it’s very, very mild.
Good evening re-watchers! I hope you are all looking forward to episodes 5 and 6.
We are due to start watching at 10.05 pm GMT and other equivalent times around the world. This is to prevent too much of a staggered start – even though @GB has reassured me about the process!
Hi both!
@Fern – I hope it is mild – my sister had a bad day and a half with sickness – poor soul. But I seem to be testing negative as the days go on so am hoping that it missed me!
I have no recollection of what happens in these episodes! I hope there is something juicy to comment upon!
10.05 pm off we go!
I’ve never been stuck in an elevator. I’m not sure I could be as cool headed as Mi Ka.
Mi Ka’s first reaction is ‘Protect him!’
@KFern, I’ve been in a lift where the lights went off. Total darkness for seconds but it felt like minutes!!!
I felt it was de rigeuer scene … like they just had to have a scene where the girls had to cope on their own… and it had to be Mi Ka rather than her friend who was more decisive and caring, etc.
@Fern, yes, it always was more Mi Ka’s auto responsiveness in being caring that got her approval. The other doc was better scholastically, but lacked the ‘feeling’ for a good bedside manner.
It shows that book learning and practice aren’t everything when there’s a crisis.
Yanshan is more worried about her liability than about the patient. MK supports her and tries to calm her down, but it’s no use. MK has to take over.
Who does the doctor protect… her reputation or the life of her patient?
The characters are consistent throughout the series. I’m glad the other doctor decided to change towards the end of the series. I was tired of her sour looks whenever she could not get approval.
@Fern, yes and the senior doc knows who it was who did the actual ‘surgery’ because it’s Mi Ka’s white coat that has blood on it. Yet YS accepted the praise (eyeroll!).
You are right, @GB. They have pledged to do the best for their patients.
Do you recognise the drama or film that XK was watching? The FL looks familiar.
He’s watching GO GO Squid! haha I love the grumpy version of our hero!
Then he’s off to find camisoles … attempting to be low key! Baffled male in underwear shop.
@Kate are you at the change of scene where Ke Lei is out shopping?
I LOLed each time the sales girl speaks loudly and he’s embarrassed. He’s whispering but the sales girl is clueless LOLOL getting him to touch the material is just too much and she loses a customer.
Haha. XK in panic mode in the ladies’ underwear shop.
We get the set-up for the stressful boss of emergency surgery department.
@Fern, I know that one of the shows was Go Go Squid. Latter show seems to pop up in many other series as the romance that the leads watch (and get uncomfortable over or learn from LOL)
@Fern, yes the set up is good… so we know that it’s not the place docs want to go and Mi Ka will probably end up there. However, her attitude to being there is the thing that sets her apart.
Gosh first Dr Shao wants Mi Ka for his department. Immediately afterwards, XK asks Dr He to meet Mi Ka.
If the SWAT team are used to small injuries, I wondered why XK didn’t just wash the pink camisole and return it.
I love XK’s awkwardness with the pressie and invite for lunch …adorable!
Lunch … ‘just to eat something’ haha!
@Kate, yeah of all things underwear… the public gifting/exchange of underwear between a man and woman set up. We just know someone’s going to be embarrassed by the gift.
@GB – that underwear shopping scene was so sweet! I admire his courage.
XC gets called uncle and Noob by a teenager.
@Kate, KL was so cutely awkward… it was a date but just to sit in front of each other and put food into their own mouth. Heheheh!
KL is being bested by a kid. although he’s good in real action, He’s not much with simple egames.
LOL @Kate, I think it took more courage to enter the ladies underwear shop than to confront terrorists!!
@GB and @Kate, yes, KL is very brave in his profession, but less so in social situations.
Irritating Chen Tao discovers the inner shirt gift while KL is out chasing baddies.
I love his annoyance @GB when he is bested by the boy! XK has it all – bravery and cute awkwardness!
These car chase and shootout scenes look more ‘Western’ somehow. I do not imagine that it happens in China. For one thing, I’m thinking guns can’t be that commonplace.
I really wish the friends would be less intrusive in these shows! They lunge at people’s gifts! Another dramatic device I know!
Do you remember the portable flashing lights that American cops have in the unmarked vehicles? I feel that they needed one like that. Great shooting to get a tyre at that speed.
@Kate, me too. I hate the busy-body friends who intrude into all things private and personal.
@Fern, yes, camerawork-wise, it was good.
I like the use of silent gestures to communicate among the police. I wouldn’t be able to know clearly if they meant we go together left or I’ll go left and you go the other way. They have to pay attention to each other to get the message at the right time.
I’d forgotten about the police colleague who got hit! Oh… We are seeing the real cost of the work they do…
I’m re-watching the shootout… quite exciting!
Everything goes slow-mo when the officer gets shot.
I was thinking how hard it would be to not shoot your own men in a situation like that – unknown territory, everyone in mufti.
KL sliding under the tanks while shooting was so cool. So Hollywood LOL.
Dr Shao says, “I’m a doctor, not a judge.” Personally, it must be difficult to be unbiaised, I would think. Or it gets habitual to be disinterested.
I had the same thought as you @Fern. How to tell who’s whom when it’s dark and all are wearing the same dull coloured clothes.
From the high tension of the shooting to the high tension of the hospital.
Now the high tension of who gets treatment first. The bad guy or the policeman.
I am finding this argument rather forced… there is no way surgeons would discuss something like this in front of distressed colleagues and friends!
Again, the demands of drama…
That’s true @Kate. Show has to give us some exposition in argument to know what’s going on. It’s not the usual way in hospitals.
I like the added stress of 2 surgeries going on at the same time with just 1 main surgeon doing both.
Agreed… excellent scenario @GB!
Yanshan is worried about liability again. MK tells her that Dr Shao must have taken everything into consideration. “Between the system and life, life is more important.”
Both Dr Shao and MK are doctors who are willing to work a bit outside of the system for the good of the patients.
@Fern agreed… Yanshan is a watery character isn’t she?
It’s amazing that our skulls can be opened and we can survive!
Oops too much blood! On to the next episode!
I’m at episode 6. Are we going ahead or having a break?
Shall we have a loo break for 2 mins and resume at 22.51?
OK.
Yes, @Fern, it’s often the scenario in hospitals. In dramas they go for the ‘safer’ patients and won’t move until they get someone to be responsible.
At least the police apologise for being rude. This was a similar set up in DOTS, which I think this show was supposed to be a parallel of, except that here they don’t go overseas.
OK break time!!
Quite a lot of close detail – not for the squeamish!
Would the arterial aneurysm be from the shooting or present already? I suppose part of the injury.
My computer slowed for a while… I’m at the after operation scene with MK and KL.
I’m a bit behind you @GB so no worries! Just got there now.
I love Mi Ka’s grin when she looks at her certificate.
Me too!
Good question @Fern, I thought the doc found it by chance when they opened him up. It might have been aggravated by the injury?
I like how the incident gives MK and KL a chance to sit and share some personal stuff and get closer. Especially their feelings and regrets about work and life.
Me too… they are getting closer.
I love how Mi Ka explains the difference between the choices a doctor must make compared to a policeman. They both talk about helplessness. KL is feeling guilty. Mi Ka’s words comfort him. She is very good at interpersonal communication.
I like Mi Ka’s voice. It is soothing, compared to some actresses.
@Fern – yes she is…quite a gift. This all feels real between them.
@Fern, yes, and I like how MK’s character is written to be able to stand up and make a stand for what’s right. She does so when Dr Shao is questioned about his ‘adventurous’ decision to do two surgeries at the same time.
Yes, she is very eloquent, while not seeming to be currying favor.
@Kate, her little bodily movements during that discussion with KL –she rocks back and forth a little bit and moves in such a natural way when she speaks.
@Fern – I didn’t notice the movements – will keep my eyes open in future scenes. Sandra Ma is very intuitive as an actress isn’t she?
Xiaoman leaves for treatment overseas. Although we don’t see her much, it’s still quite moving. Must be Sandra Ma’s great emotional acting.
LOL now the passengers in the lift wonder what Dr Shao did to make MK cry.
Xiaoman’s leaving scene. You can see that Mi Ka worries that it is the last time they will speak.
@GB yes!! haha
Yes, @Kate @Fern, I really like Sandra Ma’s acting. She really inhabits the character well and is so natural throughout.
@Fern – oh…of course! Yes… that must be a painful parting.
Yes both on SM’s acting… and she blends well with BJT also… so their interactions have this natural, understated warmth to them…very appealing to the viewer.
Haha. THe bestie thinks that the undershirts were exchanged, not that KL replaced it.
LOL the policeman in hospital won’t let any of the female nurses wash him. KL has to become the nursemaid!
His being in hospital gives KL many chances to meet MK actually but they didn’t make anything of it yet.
Heheheh! KL passes the flowers to MK just so that he can tie his shoelaces.
The growing legend of the vest! haha
Now it’s time for Mi Ka to be embarrassed. KL observes her reaction to the flowers and says that she must not have a boyfriend. She scolds KL.
It’s Wenbo’s time to be awkward about eating a meal with a woman.
Hah! Qing Xia is supposed to come for the patient but she’s after his caregiver Wen Bo.
What an objectionable man blocking their route!
@Kate, as usual the hospital’s reputation is at stake, so an unreasonable man’s complaint causes trouble when there should have been nothing. also in the age of Internet and social media, a little thing gets blown up, people get emotional and so it becomes something big.
Yes. People don’t have the same idea of triage as doctors. Particularly when family members aren’t getting treated and the hospital isn’t communicating as well as it might to those who are waiting.
Both KL and MK are being punished.
Actually, I believe KL may have been a little bit less loud in the hospital if it hadn’t been MK who was pushed by the objectionable man.
He gets a dressing down as well.
@GB – yes!
Yes, he’s wanting to protect her. Good observation.
Even Mr Hao? remarks that KL used to be more cool headed.
The exercise with the hostage and victim shows exactly what he practiced to free MK in the first scene in episode 1.
KL more and more involved with MK…
Poor Mi Ka, she can’t confide in her housemate Xiaoman anymore.
That’s true, @Fern. That first episode hostage thing where KL shot the hostage taker… the shot was really so close to MK’s head!!
MK won’t tell Xiaoman what’s troubling her. She puts a brave face in public but is upset that she’s out of ND.
I get a little annoyed with MK’s mask being so low on her face….
@Kate, I remember thinking that as well, when first watching!
… her nose was out a lot of the time!! An important detail.
I feel that the mask thing was a mistake. Should have been reshot but maybe they couldn’t re do the scene for some reason.
I like the closing credits music…
What do you fearless BoDers want to do next with our watching of the show?
I can’t remember where all the good bits are… but can take a look…
The patient starts to have a seizure. The episode ends with Mi Ka telling the head of ER which drug was used. Is she about to get into trouble again?
Oh I hope not @Fern!
Good point @GB… I imagine these scenes are quite a thing to set up etc etc
I’m good with Friday nights. My husband and older daughter generally like to go to a film then and it’s rarely something I would like.
Hi @Kate, I’ll leave the choice of rewatch to you. I’ll be taking up more stuff to do from now onwards, and cannot guarantee my availability. I’ll look out for notices of rewatches of course and will drop in when I can.
I’m usually fine with Friday nights too @Fern.
Do we want to continue to watch through or to do a selective re-watch?
Perhaps now is the time to select one or two favourite episodes?
Thanks for a fun rewatch @Fern and @Kate! See you!
I remember liking the episode when Mi Ka asked for the SWAT team’s help to get the medicine from all over the city to save the little girl. I also liked the episode when her co-worker ‘found’ her an apartment to share.
Thanks @GB – great that you’ve been able to be with us thus far – added enjoyment.
@Fern – let’s watch those episodes then! I loved the whole apartment share sequence!
I’ll skim through the episodes. Maybe I can find a recap site so I can remember some of my favourite scenes. I’ll report back here, @Kate.
Cheers.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Of course the apartment share is where the romance hots up a little doesn’t it? I remember the scene where he ‘leans in’ and she is very bashful.
Thanks @Fern – I’ll look for one or two episodes also!
Night night @Fern and @GB have a great day!
Here is one site, @Kate and @GB:
https://cyn-lynn.blogspot.com/2021/03/you-are-my-hero-recap-and-review.html
@Fern – that’ll do nicely!
@GB and @Fern,
From @GB’s recent post it looks like you won’t be with us this coming Friday for a re-watch.
Can I suggest if this is the case – do let us know dear GB if you are planning to be with us – that we begin at 9 pm instead of 10pm. I’d appreciate a slightly earlier night.
What about episodes 9 and 10 when the apartment scenes begin and all the fun around XK’s secret role in MK’s life?
@Kate, yes, by all means change the time to suit yourselves going forward. If I want to, I might only drop by after the rewatch to read and add on thoughts if any strike me.
Just make sure @packmule3 knows what time you’d like to set it. 🙂
Enjoy the rewatch!
@GB – thank you! I’ll wait and see if Fern is ok with this and then let @Packmule know and it will be great if you fancy jumping in anyway!
I’m sorry if you got that impression. I’m hoping to be there. Thanks for checking up. I’m okay with the proposed new time or even 9.30pm if that makes it easier for the morning people to join.
@Fern, sorry, I didn’t get that impression re you – I meant @GB. My post was confusing.
Let’s go for 9.30 pm as a compromise. Good thinking.
Let me know what you think about possible episodes.
I remember episodes 9 and 10 with more fondness than 7 and 8, but I’m willing to watch whatever the majority decides. The only episodes or scenes I actively disliked were the filler scenes with the daughters of the family friend who try to destroy KL and MK’s relationship, but those scenes are much later in the drama.
Having said that, the latter half of episode 8 contains the scene when MK proves her practical worth in the ER by organising the police SWAT force to bring a rare specialised medicine from all over the city to save a little girl whose father is destitute. She also managed to get every staff member on board to help empty the vials. That was a good scene. She cleared any bad vibes she had with the head of Emergency Surgery.
@Fern – thank you.
@GB has said it is down to you and me to decide. So, if you are happy let’s let @Packmule3 know. But if you have other episode suggestions do please say and we can go with your preferences. I am happy either way.
I’ll let @Packmule3 know our plans by end of play today to give her time to create a new thread.
Hi, Kate. One of my posts went missing. (I was using my phone, so my fault probably.) I said that the 2nd half of episode 8 had the scenes where MK really redeemed herself in the ER by mobilizing the police force and the staff to procure and prepare rare medicine for a little girl with a destitute father. But we can watch that ourselves between re-watches and mention it as appropriate. I think we’ll have to skip a few or we won’t ever get through it. 9 and 10 are my votes for next in any event.
@Fern – Great – I will watch the second half of Episode 8 before the main re-watch, in that case – to catch that bit of the story.
I’ll let @Packmule3 know re slight timing change and episode selection.
Thanks, @Kate. I hope you had a dry day like we did down here and that you’re well and enjoying the new year.
On a tangent: I was interested to see that most of the guests on a well known New Year’s Eve tv show I watched, said that they wished for kindness, positivity and respect between people. It said a lot about how people perceived 2022.
