Hi @pkml3, thanks for being so on top of things with this thread!!
I feel that we will not need to take a break on April 22. So far no one has indicated that they’ll be away or celebrating the festival on that weekend, however, it’s still February, and things may change.
Speaking of shower scenes, Li Xian has a couple in Meet Yourself,… other shows have couple clothes or phone accessories…. MY has couple-shower foam LOLOL, okay remotely ie they were not in the same place. Or couple soap scent (but separately)? I thought it would make good PPL for that shower foam! (Fans of Li Xian and Crystal Liu must have headed for the local marts to get it!)
One of the best episodes, with a “multi-contextual” scene. Multiple meanings, irony (the heroine understands in a different way), exploitation of the fantastic concept to produce meaning and emotion.
Leading to this, a series of twists, tension-release-tension. The situation that worsens in stages, when we hope it’s over. This also serves to introduce the fantastic principle that will be used in the major scene.
@WE, your comment is getting me excited about rewatching this episode! See you in 5.5 hours!
I am nearby and will hover here on and off!
I’m sharking here… 🙂
Just getting my coffee and ready to start.
Hi there @SD (salteddust) and @WE!!
@WE, what do you mean by sharking?
@GB, aaha, it doesn’t exist ?
It’s wandering like a shark. 🙂
I got up late and my husband is still sleeping so it is rewarmed coffee from yesterday (ugh, no grinding of coffee beans as sound in this house carries weirdly).
Hi stalteddust and GB, by the way.
Hi @WE and @GB! Ready to start!
yeh, I launched that! gogogo
Hi @WE Let’s Go!!!!
Sharking as a verb, no… lurking is close to what you mean.
Ready, set, go!
Pity about the coffee! I might have had a beer but decided against it.
OK I see that our Hee Ju is packing. I hate to have to move house. My packing would take weeks!!!
Hi lootie.
The sister guess the love story before the two of them even guess it, lol
Hee Ju is favouring Jin Wu by her bothering about his bedding. Min Ju’s words are usually on point. HJ is going overboard.
@saltheddust, All these talk about coffee makes me want to make one for myself but its near bedtime here, maybe I will make tea instead.
Hi there Lootie Lyn!
Ah the horrible wife calls for JW, rude, entitled and irritating.
the bitchy ex-wife. ahah, I like this kind of characters. Even better when they are pretty. ^^
MUSIC…. the fall soon..
@WE, yes, Min Ju is often correct. She guesses before even HJ knows that she’s in love or attracted to JW.
The uphill climb up the stairs. HJ notes that actress Yu Ra image and the person, Yu Ra are very different
We can say… he fall for her. 🙂
why does she not check on the person who has fallen? I did not understand that part. Even afraid, I would rush down not up!
Hi @Feifei. Nowadays coffee and tea don’t keep me awake when I’d like them to!!
Poor Hee Ju does not know whether to look up or down… go up or down the stairs.
LOLOL @WE, he FELL for her!!! That’s some kind of LOVE or LUV lol.
He himself was so stunned to think MJ believes HJ likes him… been only 2 days! LOL
She’s very bad at first aid. GOSH.
She first climb to the uper stair, look at the room.
Then finaly look in the stair what fallen.
Then go at first floor and just ask…
“tepenim”… even after that don’t really react.
damn, with this girl you have time to die ten times.
@SD, yes, my normal reaction would be to see what or who had fallen down first… I felt it took her too long to get help for JW.
@pkml3 wrote about how her going up was significant… she didn’t believe her eyes… and that had some bearing on how she may have made a difference.
I felt that she wanted to double check that it really was JW who was no longer upstairs. At that stage she was on the 4th floor and faster to go up than down.
But maybe, she didn’t see him fall, just hear something. But as she go to see in the room, we guess she guess it could be him. so an irrational move like she’s too afraid to know at go to look there first. I don’t know. I need someone to decypher this. But it’s ok in a drama for the sake of emotions. ^^
LOLOL @WE. I thought so too… but see what I wrote to @salteddust. @pkml3 had a post about that going up instead of down the stairs.
Now JW is only thinking about the ‘game’ was he really in it… did it rain… was their a guitar?
The medical procedure is quite kind. No suspens about he will die or not.
Anyway, he’s the main character, so no point to make believe he will die. ^^
The hospital experience… good call that we only get to see what JW sees as he goes in and out of consciousness. SJJ’s idea?
Effective story telling without us having to wait around the hotel from other people’s point of view.
oh sung-moo isn’t the guy you want to see the first time you wake up. lol.
@GB, all we need is a MONTAGE. 🙂
HJ looks up and called out “Taepyonim” hoping that the person who fell is not JW. She runs upstairs to check if JW is in the room.
@WE he won’t die but it’s amazing that he moves around as he does one day after that kind of fall. He was actually able to ‘run away’ later.
Now we get the backstory of how Prof Cha treated his own son.
Just seeing him with JW made me think he was a nice old man, but seeing him with HS gives a different impression.
He puts the blame on HS, calls him traitor. Cha does not ever blame himself.
@GB, well I don’t know how many time after he wake up and all that.
Some flashback now. I don’t remember if we saw them before. Maybe not. But as I rewatched the whole drama I don’t remember.
He CLENCHES his fist when he see his wife taken by an another – more nice – guy.
@WE, I can’t get the context of why he’s in the rain and Su Jin is crying while waiting for her new husband… seems that JW never knew that HS had gotten married to Su Jin.
That was revenge for JW being favoured by his dad. He lost his dad to JW, so he took JW’s wife. That’s how it’s made to look and what JW believes.
We can understand why he’d like to have killed/stabbed HS over and over again.
@GB, lot of makjang family stuff in the pot. 🙂
And so is the explanation for this no-believable survival of such a fall. Just break all your bones on the ramp. 🙂
It’s scary that an AR character has strength to push a grown man over the banisters!
Supposed to be virtual but seems more real than real.
@WE yes, but how can he walk or drag himself about after breaking so many parts of his body? He even had surgery for his intestines!
@GB, well, it’s that or he die.
When you’re about to die you can do crazy thing.
@FF (Feifei) each time I hear thunder and see rain, I start worrying in this show!!!
JW is wondering if the pain in his gut is because he really sustained the slashings from the duel with HS. Fortunately it was because he’d had surgery.
HS briefly seems like the wronged person in that scene with his father, he is not angry, his father is; the ‘company’ (whose?) is more important to his father than he is. And then immediately, the scene with JW where we realize that HS has married JW’s presumably former wife…. And it is back to the view that HS is villianous.
And now the thunderstorm while he is in the hospital… IS he in the game or not; he must be wondering.
It’s an amazing, supernatural AR game bug that a virtual thing can grab a real life person and hold on to part of his consciousness at all times.
Just thinking about how cut throat these families are. Everything revolves around family businesses including whom one marries and sibling relationships. The gam e s seem to be another way to express those conflicts to the players. I think the kid game developer was clueless as to player interpretationl
What will be cruel in the scene is : he’s so wounded that he can’t really do something, so difficult to escape, etc.
HERE: the assistant find the LENS!!
So…. here it’s the BIG GOOSEBUMP!!
A paranormal phenomenon.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
@SD yes, it’s unnerving that the game continues regardless of whether he logs in or not. He can see and hear and feel the AR world without lenses or logging in.
He’s become a NPC while being a PC!! Great paradox!
Jin woo in shocK…
fucking shit, this can’t be real.
OMG OMG what happens ?? it’s crazy ?! Im mad??
aaahh ahhh
The rain… is it real rain ???
“tang tang tang”
the sister repeat
“tang tang tang”
@OAL, yes the Cha family was most dysfunctional… and also Jin Wu’s married life. Prof Cha treasured business name and money above all.
It seems like JW wanted to kill HS since the encounter in the rain with HS & Su Jin and he took his opportunity to slash HS in the game.
@GB yea every time the rain appears in the drama, I will always think that it is in the game mode.
she escape the room for the doctor, instead of showing she cries.
@WE, I like the scenes with little sister.
HJ seems to be behaving more like JW’s wife than just a landlord. Now she’s emotional again.
MJ gives JW the news about how fast she falls in love. LOL
@FF, such a nightmare when one cannot log out of the game. Especially a game where one is bound to get killed if one does nothing.
@GB, oh yes, the sister is such a good character. ^^
Jin-Woo should phone Elon musk for a robotic leg now. ^^
Now we hear the news about JW’s leg. He would be lame for life.
One more day since he woke up.
Thanks to Hee-Ju dialogue line.
LOL sister MJ tells HJ that JW is not interested in women at the moment. Good one! HJ is nonplussed.
Oh dear the dear wife, Yu Ra has called and JW is terrorised LOLOL.
Ha so JW wasn’t wearing the lens and he managed to logged into the game. No wonder doctors thought he was mad. JW himself didn’t know that he was in game mode too since he asked his secretary to confirm if HS is really dead.
Hee-Ju becoming new Jin-Woo assistant about pushing ex-wife away. ^^
I like the sister a lot also. Always completely upfront and honest. And her scenes provide a bit of comic relief, which we desperately need at this point. We still do not understand how the game works and now the added wrinkle that once one is logged in? logged in at a certain level? killed a real human? one cannot log out.
@WE, HJ is wearing the same clothes as the night he fell… I think it’s still within 30 hours since he fell. Now he runs for his life first from his wife!!!
KRACK!!!! Ligthning.
MUSIC GUITAR
serious shit incoming
@FF, JW couldn’t believe that it was either a real game or a dead HS that he’d encountered. Neither is possible in our reality.
The hand on the eye
NO LENS
ffffuuukkkkkkkk
walk in slow motion
image parasites, then clear
the guy with the sword!!
@SD, the scary music gives me the heebie jeebies!!! And the thunder and lightning… with the guitar music.
At first it’s a relief that HJ enters the room, but she didn’t know that she was opening the door to a ‘dead’ NPC HS. This is a living nightmare!!!
Hey people, I hear a guitar song.
don’t you hear it ?
woo I’m the only one so.
Now: information, good and new one:
DUEL CANCELATION in 60sec.
JW realises that HJ does not hear the guitar music, therefore he must be deranged.
HJ finds him so weird, wanting her outside the door. Later he’ll be so weird wanting her to stay put in the rain on the rooftop.
Suspens 8 7 6… 3 2 BUT
TWIST
a random guy enter
aahhhrharhhahrharhahrhahrharhar
The overlap of the game vr and reality is mind boggling fonsidering that ML isn’t wearing the lenses. It is amind meld. Scary stuff.
And the lovely music….. uh oh.
@WE, the duel cancellation was crucial information. He made use of it again and again. But…. the door opened too soon!!!
Oh no!!!! panic, panic!!
At least even the AR sword gets stuck in the bed giving JW more time … but still not enough.
He stole is wand for leg, poor guy.
@OAL, a mind meld is a good way to describe it!! Shades of Star Trek! 🙂
Hee juu, bye bye to yura
CROM.
She don’t want to be here when she find the truth.
The guitar music start, the thunder and the rain ….. how did he logged into the game without the lens? The logging in mechanism must be the brain/mind and not the lens.
Hah, the wife can guess that JW is trying to hide from her and maybe HJ is working for him.
“you are attacked”.
In addition of real wounds, the virtual ones.
hard time for jin woo. lol
Lovely music scary game.
@WE that random patient walking in was the worst possible thing for JW.
Now Yu Ra and Prof Cha meet. She knows JW must have run away because he hates her so much. A black comedy.
To make the suspens longer, many other scenes between, with yu ra or any people but mostly yura
@GB, yeah, the random patient really did a mess. He deserve to have his leg-wand taken away !! 🙂
Even if he don’t know why… ahaha
shash SLASH, more hit more wound
THIS IS THE END for jin woo.
@FF the music to bring on the suspense is very good. The love song is irritating.
Now Prof Cha gets to find out from the investigators that there’s fear of foul play with HS’s death.
THE SCENE!!!
Damn….
SJJ put all the episode in that.
Let’s get a hug with a mysterious music.
The sword gets stuck in the hospital bed and sofa, woo its so realistic. We see blood on JW’s sleeve which means he is still in game mode but he is limping. In the later part of the drama JW no longer limps when he is in game mode.
@WE, JW while bleeding, finally admits that HS’s death was murder (at least the intention in a game) but it’s not really murder in real life since he didn’t know that a game stabbing would kill.
He notes that their deaths by being bled to death would remain mysteries.
I’m so sad for you, what happen, hoooo so much emotion, starting to love you with that.
don’t move —- just wait for the duel cancelation, girl.
@FF, good point!!! Although the game is on, JW feels both his real body wounds and the AR game injuries.
Also the reality and AR meld together because the rain seems to be both real and AR rain.
I like that Yu Ra does not back down from Prof Cha.
@GB, he’s hard on himself, couldn’t guess it would be real and real murder BUT…
Maybe he thinks at this time, he really wanted to kill him.. probably, it’s how the bug work.
@WE, the merging of real and AR is so good… the AR HS is so real, he casts a shadow/reflection on the ground. Question… why not also appear as a reflection in the mirror?
@FF, Yu Ra is one scary woman. An entitled brat and unpleasant to boot.
Final montage of flashback, and hypothetic scenes (all true) as he guess the truth.
And finaly, on the train station…
A GUY ON THE GROUND
woow owooow owowowooo
@WE, that’s a valid point. Marco really wanted to hurt Se Ju and he became an NPC. If the brain is what does the logging in and not the lens, then, the emotions and intent may ‘enter’ the game too.
So JW’s desire to kill HS may have activated the bug even without Emma’s presence during the duel. I always wondered about that.
Poor HJ didn’t have a break since the previous night. Gets into trouble with Yu Ra and drenched in the rain. She’s constantly overwhelmed with emotion and in tears. She’s the buffer, the unwitting angel or protector.
The game bug feeds on the players’ mind like JW and HS mutual wish for revenge against each other and make the slashing become a reality.
Voiceover from JW: “Some things are only understood when you go crazy together. (Flashback to the moving train and a frightened SJ in it, as imagined by JW). Jung Se Ju, I could understand why he hadn’t come back. “I had an idea what he was afraid of.” (It is JW’s imagination but he believed that SJ had heard the guitar music in the storm on the train.) “Se Ju could have been chased, just like me. By someone only he could see.” (Flashback to JW walking outside the train in Granada and the traveler who had shared SJ’s coach walking by him.)
“Did Se Ju die on the train or did he…” (JW imagines that SJ might have been lying unconscious right behind him, but he had been invisible, in another realm, the realm of the game. The gun in SJ’s hand flickered but SJ remained solid, unlike HS.)
Yes that Yu Ra is wicked. But as with HS maybe we do not have the whole story. Just trying to give her the benefit of the doubt (sort of – actually I think she is not good)>
@GB, anyway, the game was already messed up because of the original bug. But yeah, I think in his mind, Jin woo wanted to kill. Maybe not in a conscious way about it to be real, but he was full in the game and slashed him so many time after the decisive blow. Carnage. So happy to kill him in the game as a proxy to be able to kill him really.
@FF, yes, now that we are rewatching together,… that seems like the way the bug works. So scary, weird, impossible… I hope it always remains impossible, no matter how real computers make virtual and augmented or immersive reality.
@SD, we will get a few chances to watch Yu Ra and make judgement. On the whole, she’s the kind I disapprove of!
@WE, yes, JW was happy to have killed HS in the game. He didn’t actually want HS dead, but that didn’t stop the game from interpreting it that way.
We have to see if the situation was the same for Marco and Se Ju. They used AR guns instead of swords, but it seems Marco died. So intent was there as well, maybe.
I hope we all had a good time. I know I did!! Especially in thinking about how the game killing could become real. A precautionary tale for wanting to blur the line between reality and immersive technological reality.
@AOL I like the idea of terming it a mind meld. As though the game melds with the neurons of the brain. I am watching this for the first time (trying to watch at least one episode ahead), but that idea would have at least (some) plausibility (at least science fiction-wise).
@GB it looks like SJ on the sidewalk at the train station. Is it him, is JW just imagining or are we in a flash back? If it is SJ, is he the killer (who killed himself?) Confusing!
The game was paused when JW pulls HJ in to block HS and the counter starts to count down to zero, when counter reaches 58 we see HJ’s neck. Isn’t that weird because HJ’s head is on JW’s shoulders. The view should be from JW’s eyes, at this point JW’s sight should be clear and should see only HS.
Yeh, it was a good time.
See you soon, all of you !!
@GB, rewatching together makes understanding the story much easier and faster. Yea had a good time rewatching together too.
@SD, at this stage in the show, all of us were kind of confused. The thing is that JW never really knew for sure what happened to Se Ju. It was only after this experience in the hospital with NPC Hyung Seok attacking him relentlessly that JW extrapolates from his experience.
His voiceover explanation (I posted it above) was his understanding of what had possibly happened to SJ. He was guessing, but quite accurately.
As for whether SJ really was lying outside the train, that’s in JW’s imagination… but again, it’s highly possible. SJ was in ‘another realm’ hiding in the game.
He was still alive in that his body didn’t flicker the same way that his gun did. We see that dead HS’s NPC character flickers.
There was someone else chasing SJ in the game. So there was shooting and SJ felt pain. We are not shown enough to know much for sure at this stage.
Yes @GB Yes, the blurring of realty and immersive technology as a theme certainly make this drama highly relevant. As I enjoy this rewatch I’m amazed that MOTA is not more highly rated. Themes, characters and actors are all very good.
@FF, oh I see what you mean… yes. It’s an editing issue. We should see HJ’s shoulder since we are taking on the view through JW’s eyes.
The camera man didn’t position himself well or move the camera or get the actors out of the way!
@LL, did you check on this drama’s ratings? Or how popular it was in terms of viewership?
I have no clue. I found it confusing and difficult and didn’t watch it properly, when it first aired.
@GB, your point about the real rain and the AR rain is so right. I was so absorb in the slashing and can’t tell that the rain is real until much later. The message of the drama: the blurring of R vs AR.
@GB I usually use My Drama List as a reference that rates K dramas. MOTA is rated 8.0 out of 10. Just as a comparison, Vincenzo is rated 9.0 and AOS is 9.1. That is quite a gap and 8.0 puts MOTA below many dramas not as good as this such as Kiss Sixth Sense and May I Help You?, etc. I don’t always agree with the ratings that appear here but can be used somewhat as a guide.
@Lootie Lyn, thanks for the info on the ratings. Yes, I do not agree with them many times. I guess it’s just based on the number of votes that MDL readers give a show. In terms of quality overall, concept, visuals, writing, production value etc, MOTA is definitely better than those shows you mentioned.
I remember that the screenwriter once again scandalized the audience during an interview towards the end of MOTA. Ah ah ah! They retaliated by lowering the rating. Some of them even swore that they would never watch one of her dramas again. I bet they watched Yumi Cells. ^^
@WE Thanks for this info that is new to me and would explain the undeserved low rating for MOTA. While rewatching I’m struck with the high quality of the first five episodes. Now I’m curious as to what screenwriter said to provoke the retaliation!
@WE and @ Lootie Lyn, Netizens as a whole are a strange group, especially to this westerner. There are so many b dramas, especially sageuks, where there are disputes related to historical accuracy, even though the dramas are fiction. Joseon Exorcist and its star come to mind. I wonder what offended in MOTA. I’m glad this quality writer also did Yumi’s Cells, another very creative and also sweet drama. This writer definitely has range.
@AOL, @LootieLyn.
Since she’s my favorite writer, I’ve read several interviews because I’m very curious about the way she works. Creative process, etc. Unfortunately I never know enough, she doesn’t talk much about it. But screenwriters don’t talk much about that in general.
She’s quite awkward in interviews, or rather, screenwriting habit maybe: very concise and direct. And of course, people understand it wrong or as it suits them.
For example for MOTA she says that:
– There was originally no female lead in the drama. This upset Park Shin-Hye’s fans, who already thought that the heroine didn’t have enough screentime. That’s a big change for a script, a lot of things to change!!!
– She explains how a part of the fantasy process works: that following a trauma, the lenses change the brain perception. So that the user really does suffer the damage inflicted by the game. But that it is created by their own mind.
On this, many people were angry because they would have liked the drama to explain this, and not to be forced to read an interview. In general, it annoys people because her stories are not explained very much. But I still find them clear compared to others. The fantastic principle could be guessed easily for example.
And still, it doesn’t explain everything because there are other weird events in the drama. So for me, this is a drama containing paranormal, mixed with a vaguely explainable scientific principle. Her explanation was only a part of the truth. It doesn’t explain interactions with server and a lot of things.
@AOL, @WE. Thanks for taking time to elaborate on this situation.
I remember episodes further along became more murky and perhaps this rewatch will help a bit but not completely. Sometimes I am willing to accept this in dramas that are done well in other ways but don’t make complete sense. Wonder if some of the Emma scenes were extras that were added to give Park Shin-Hye more screen time. Guess we will never know🤔
Originally, it is extra in the sense that the writer chooses to give more importance to the character.
But you can see that Park Shin Hye’s two characters are central to the story.
So, my opinion is that: by forcing something unexpected, it caused a creative collision. And the script has been rethought thoroughly, certainly for something better than before. As is often the case in this kind of collision.
