What Are We Watching in May 2023?

I don’t mind that only a couple of new kdramas are on my radar this month because I still have “Dr Romantic 3,” the cdrama “Till the End of the Moon,” and “Stealer: The Treasure Keeper.” “Stealer” with Joo Won is fun though it seems to be a low-key, low-testosterone, low-budget version of “Healer.” I don’t mind, though.

I dropped “Family: Unbreakable Bond” because of the subpar subbing.

I’m travelling again in June. It’s a mixed work-and-leisure travel so I’ll have time to blog. Ha! I hope I didn’t jinx myself!

1. Black Knight

Poor Song Seung Heon! Once everybody’s dreamboat after starring in “My Princess” (2011) with Kim TaeHee, he’s now relegated to playing villainous roles?? Say it ain’t so!

The kdrama “Black Knight” is based on a sci-fi webtoon about a courier named “5-8” living in the year 2071. Kim Woo Bin plays 5-8 and Song Seung Hoon is the bad guy who wants to eliminate refugees.

This Netflix trailer pretty much sums up the plot.

Episodes: 6
Start Date: Fri, May 12
Airs on Friday. Will all episodes drop on May 12?
Where to Watch it: Netflix
Network: Netflix

Since Netflix is producing this, I expect it to be edgier, more violent and more outrageous than the kdramas produced by the regular Korean stations. But the CGI should be good.

2. My Perfect Stranger

Synopsis from mydramalist:

Yoon Hae Joon is the youngest anchor to ever work at his broadcasting station. He is calm and straightforward as a journalist and kind in his personal life. Baek Yoon Young dreamed of becoming a writer, but wound up working at a publishing company.

The two somehow travel back in time to the year 1987. There, Yoon Hae Joon tries to find the truth behind a serial murder case while Baek Yoon Young attempts to prevent her parents from marrying. They soon realize that their objectives are connected.

Cast: I’m checking this out because I like the leads.

a. Jin Ki Joo: I liked her in “From Now on, Showtime!” though she and the main lead didn’t impress me with their pairing. They didn’t seem particularly drawn to each other in the most elemental way. That’s why I want to see if she can do better here with another male lead.

b. Kim Dong Wook: Remember him from “You Are My Spring” and “Find Me in Your Memory”? I like that he plays calm, mellow, beta-male characters who get things done anyway.

Oddly enough, he’s also starring in another kdrama that starts this month, “Delightfully Deceitful.” He plays an attorney there so I’m out.

Episodes: 16
Start Date: Mon, May 1 (tomorrow!)
Airs on Mondays and Tuesdays
Where to Watch it: Viki
Network: KBS

3. One Day Off

If this is the travelogue/healing drama that it’s advertised to be, then it’s the drama that I need right now. I’m crossing my fingers that this isn’t a noona romance.

Synopsis from mydramalist:

Set in the 1990’s, Park Ha Kyung teaches Korean literature at a high school. To escape her ordinary days, Park Ha Kyung decides to take one day trips on Saturdays. During her one day trip, she walks around, eats different foods, and meets various people. She realizes she receives comfort and empathy through her travels.

Cast: Lee Na Young aka Won Bin’s wife. She was last seen in that noona romance, “Romance is a Bonus Book.”

Episodes: 8
Start Date: Wed, May 24
Airs on Wednesdays (it’s only 25 minutes long per episode?? What?)
Where to Watch it: Don’t know
Network: Who knows?

lol. I can’t find any trailer of this drama so I’m not sure if this kdrama is really coming out this month or still in the works.

As for Cdramas, @Kate and the other ladies recommended more dramas in the “Till the End of the Moon” thread that like @Welmaris, I feel like kid in a candy store.

Kid In A Candy Store | 🎀 Jojo Siwa 🎀 Amino

Here are the recommended cdramas.

1. Love is Sweet

Starring Bai Lu and Luo Yun Xi, the same main leads in “Till the End of the Moon.” I’m reserving this till AFTER the end of the TtEotM. I’m expecting a sad ending so I need something fluffy to distract me.

36 episodes

It’s on Youtube for free and Amazon Prime for $17.99. (It’s a no-brainer. Youtube this.)

2. The Love You Give Me

Viki. Just 28 episodes. Past lovers reunited. There’s supposedly a cute kid, too, which for me and @agdr03, works like catnip. We can’t resist dramas with cute offspring.

3. Once We Get Married

About a contract marriage. Since it’s only 24 episodes, it’s doable.

4. Starry Love

Xianxia. 40 episodes.

  1. It’s May already? Aigooo! That just went very quick! 🙂

Thank you for this new thread for the May watch.

I’m jumping to The Love That You Give Me because like you said we can’t resist cute offsprings. 🙂

I’ve watch 3 episodes of Nothing But You but I’ll continue when I have to wait for episodes of TLTUGM. 🙂

  2. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for the May WaYW thread @pkml3.

In one of my rare efforts to implement a drama viewing task, I took the trouble to find out what would be airing in May or later and vaguely decided on … My Perfect Stranger/Run to You, Oh Youngsimi and Delightfully Deceitful.

As for other dramas that are coming up, there’s Only for Love (Bai Lu and Dylan Wang, but no airing date yet?), and The Worst of Evil (Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha Joon).

And all that on top of the currently being watched or rewatched:
    The Good Bad Mother (kdrama)
    Call It Love (kdrama)
    Echo (cdrama)
    Memories of the Alhambra/Liar Game 2 (kdrama/jdorama)
Our Times (cdrama for Leo Wu, but am watching this one very slowly)

Although under normal circumstances, I’d have tried Til the End of the Moon, the review of it has put me off.

Best joke though … my work audit is coming up again and it’s unlikely I’ll actually watch all that I say I’m watching!!!

  3. Thank you for the May offerings, @packmule3. I think that Black Knight will be popular, but it looks too bleak for me. I may have a look at The Love that You Give Me.

Apart from that, I’m still on April dramas: The Good Bad Mother and ‘Til the End of the Moon. That’s about all I can do — losing my multi-tasking abilities with the warm weather.

I hope that you can enjoy your June travels. Stay safe and have fun, too.

  4. Didn’t sleep well so I might not be as coherent as I should, but right now I am trying to end “Gaus Electronics” and having a blast with “The King: Eternal Monarch”. So far I have seen up to episode 5 of “Bo Ra! Deborah” and while it has some valid points I am still blocked.

    BTW Hello @PackMule3 and @GrowingBeautifully!!! 🙂

  5. Yes, thank you for May suggestions. Am planning to begin Dr. Romantic 3 and Good Bad Mother but am totally in mood for a good rom/com. Does it seem like fewer are being made? Have rewatched Strong Woman…and What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?
Have been searching the archives…any suggestions, preferably Korean?

  6. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hello @FGB4877, @pkml3 and I have been asking about you. I’m very happy to see a post from you and to know that you are able to watch some shows. How are you?

Yes, we had a blast with The King: Eternal Monarch as well. What do you mean you were blocked with “Bo Ra! Deborah”? Please email if you have time.

  7. Kalimera Everyone!

It is good to see known faces / avatars over here!

Well, I have to say that I don’t watch shows as I used to. If I don’t want to watch anything I won’t. Even though, I have started something, I pause it, until I can do so. So considering the above:

From April I am watching: “Joseon Attorney: A Morality”, that I really enjoy because of Woo DoHwan and Bona. It has some funny scenes but it also gives us some messages. It is a sageuk in fusion I could say.

At some point I want to watch “Duty After School Part 2” and finish the show.

I have started again: “A Fiery Priest” that gives me a lot of laughs!
Kim Nam Gil nails it! And, as I have written to the DR-3 thread, I am trying to finish Dr. Romantic Season 2 in order to start Season 3.

From May the only shows I want to watch are: “Black Night” and “A Tale of The Nine Tailed 1938”.

Kim Woo Bin has my full attention, along with Song Seung Heon. @Packmule3, in his last show, SSH was a detective. As it seems in this one he prefered to play a baddie!

As for the Gumihos I want to see this the continuation of the show. After all, @GB Unnie was the one who put me into ongoing shows, since we were watching Season 1 at that time…

    Hello to @agdr03, @GB Unnie,@Fern and @FGB!

Although, I have seen that some of you have started the “Good Bad Mother”, I don’t know if I am in the mood also to start this one! I do hope to see you in a thread in the near future, though! I have missed our convos!

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Annyeong my dear Doensaeng @Cleo,
I, too, have missed our fun conversations over the shows that we watched at the same time.

Was I the one who mentioned Tale of the Nine-Tailed (S1) to you? I know I watched it and wrote on it, however overall the ‘feeling’ I have about the show, and the little I recall of it, is not highly positive. On a scale of whether I found it good it’d be a 5 out of 10… and maybe as to liking it, a low 6 out of 10. There was something lacking in the execution of the show. Ultimately I found the drama-verse lacked conviction.

However, as do give shows and actors, etc more than one chance to convince me, I don’t mind giving Season 2 a try, and I’d love to meet you on that thread. 🙂

  9. Yes Unnie!

We were watching the show ongoing together. I cannot recall who else did!
If we check the specific thread we might find out.

Hopefully we will meet in a thread at some point… <3

  10. I dropped Family because of the sub too🤧 I am gonna wait till much much much much later. For may, it is only RDTK 3 for me. My Perfect stranger looks interesting, though. *contemplating* 🤭

  11. Hi everyone!

I thought I wasn’t going to have much to watch in May, as once again I’m not that interested in the May Korean dramas. But then a bunch of other dramas all premiered at the end of April! The April shower of dramas brough me May flowers to watch.

    For May, I am watching:

    K Dramas:
    Joseon Attorney
Vincenzo- finally watching this older K drama. Song Joong Ki does not disappoint!

    C Dramas:
The Love You Give Me- I enjoyed this CP in their previous drama Once We Get Married. I think their chemistry is even better in this, their second drama! I actually like both of their characters better in this show, especially FL character. The child actor playing the son is adorable! Love the CP, love their storyline, love the kid. Negatives: the other couples. I don’t like the other couples’ storylines, and find myself FF with them. Which is very disappointing for me as I really like to watch dramas with multiple couples usually. But in The Love You Give Me, I think the drama would be better if the story just focused on main leads. The other CP detract from the drama for me.

Love of Replica- I really enjoyed this CP previous drama “Mysterious Love” and they are back for another Romantic Suspense drama together. You can watch it on Viki or YouTube.

Fated to Love You- interesting mini drama about a twin searching for her missing sister. Nowhere near as good as The Familiar Stranger, but I am liking it even with its many flaws.

    Thai Dramas:
Also watching Thai drama “My Lucky Star” with Film and Bifern. It’s a remake of the Taiwan original and so far I’m enjoying it. At only 12 episodes, the pace is fast and little filler, which is great. It is available with English subs at Artop Media YouTube Channel. I only wish the quality of the subs were better. It is basic so I can understand the main points, but I wish it were more nuanced. Otherwise, I am liking the drama.

  12. @GB, I also saw bad reviews of Till The End of the Moon and was hesitant to start it. Will wait for everyone to finish the drama before deciding to start on it.

On another note anyone’s watching Dr.Cha? I had such a good time watching it, it has enough hook that keeps me watch because in a way I can’t predict which way it will go. The sense of overcoming the ‘enemy’ is very satisfying and sometimes hilarious.

Lastly, you all HAVE to watching this 12 episode (~1 hour each episode) Taiwanese drama called “Oh no! Here Comes Trouble”. I quote iQiyi’s synopsis.
“The story follows high school student Pu Yi-Yong (played by Tseng Jing-hua) who gains superpowers after a near-fatal car accident and embarks on a fantastical journey with rookie policewoman Chen Chu-Ying (played by Vivian Sung) and school rival Cao Guang-Yan”

I watched the first 10 minutes and decided that I had to watch it with hubby. It is supernatural and probably it reminds me of the kdrama Tomorrow. Just that it incorporates calligraphy and societal issues through the stories. According to a commenter it is a laugh-cry-laugh-cry-laugh show and it makes the sadness or scariness more palatable. I loved the acting, the comedy that I don’t see coming. Oh also, i heard that it was an award winning script made into a drama.

Also, on the language, that’s probably just for me or anyone who understands mandarin. After not watching taiwanese dramas for so long, I’m just not too used to the accent because it is not the usual cdrama dubbed mainland Chinese and Taiwanese Chinese sounds closer to the Singapore Chinese and it feels less concise and sharp. Feels little closer to home, strangely.

  13. Hi @Table122000

I’m greatly enjoying CP and kid in ‘The Love you give me’ and, like you, not as enamoured of the secondary plots (one sub-romance would be sufficient and I would prefer our surgeon meet someone he was drawn to rather than being hounded!). But I am enjoying the core story enough to keep me hooked and doing a little fast forwarding en route.

A number of us have enjoyed the ML-FL in the previous c-drama. Nice little group of interest. The ML is very cute with the kid!

  14. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @grace, that Taiwanese drama sounds interesting. I asked my husband about the different dialects of China and he showed me clips of people speaking in different accents LOL.

I’ll wait too and see what the verdict is on TtEotMoon. I’m not likely to be able to watch with real attention the shows I’ve chosen. For some of them, I find FFDing makes them better. 🤪

  15. Annyeong 🌷

May flowers. Mothers. Happy month. Thanks BOD’ers and PM3 for this thread and comments.

I am still watching: Secret romantic houseguest, Joseon atty, Real has come.

Started My perfect stranger. interesting. time travel or going back in time. i knew that was going to happen. and she lost her mom so she’s happy to see her mom alive, and same age as her.

watching an oldie: Saimdang with Song Seung heon 💗 i finished “my princess” with SSH. i’m kind’a slowly going through his works right now. hihi. from “autumn of the heart” and “summer scent” – oh yes. getting my fill of SSH haha

I only have access to VIKI so my show selection has been cut down. oh well.

    Laterz Bod’ers 🎀

  16. Hi @Table122000 ☺️ How are you?

I totally agree with you regarding The Love You Give Me. I love this family of Xin Qi, Min Hui and Quanquan. ❤️ I will definitely watch this pair’s first drama too. They just click and this child actor is a wonder kid. He’s the cutest. 🥰 I especially like the scene where he throws a tantrum at his Mom because she’s hesitating in reading a story for him in bed with the Dad. Here’s a clip. 😁

    https://youtu.be/H0CfQRFVtSg

I’m not fast forwarding but true, the other pairing’s story bothers me like who in their right mind would let a man live in her house just because she’s the cause of his accident? He’s got his own place but anyway. 😁

Thanks to @Kate and girlfriend @Phoenix for recommending this here. 😘

  17. Did you want me to open a thread for this cdrama, @agdr03?

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3, @Table122000 and @agdr03, I don’t mind having a thread for The Love You Give Me just to rave about this couple. I really liked them in When We Got Married and it was the same thing … I FFDed every scene that the secondary couple appeared in. They were a waste of time. Nothing mattered except the main couple interactions.

This time with the son, there’s more to ‘Coo’ about. LOL.

  19. Ooooohhhh yes please! 🥰🥰🥰

    Kumawoyo! 😘😘😘

I’ll leave my comments here. I’m addicted to this family. ☺️

  20. Done! 🙂

  21. Hello everyone!
File this under bad translations – there is a new Chinese drama out called “Let’s Tug It” 😭😭😭😭. I thought it was a BL drama between that name and the cover art! It’s actually about a men’s tug of war team. It looks terrible but I may just have to start it just to see if it is as bad as it sounds.

I’m watching the Love You Gave Me (with a bit of fast forwarding), Bo Ra! Deborah and will start Dr. Romantic 3 as soon as more episodes drop.

Oh and I really enjoyed the Diplomat on Netflix (American) except it ended on a cliffhanger!!

  22. Hi all,

Just watching, on the BBC, the procession before today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey.

Will any of any of you will be watching it? The level of procession and ceremonial hasn’t been seen since 1953.

Charles’s popularity, of course, doesn’t begin to approach that of the previous Queen. But a colleague of mine said to me yesterday when I was a little reserved about Charles ‘Give him a chance’… I was duly admonished.

  23. *Hasn’t been seen here in the UK*… I should underline!

This is for people who enjoy British Royal event watching!

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for the reminder @Kate. I don’t mind trying to catch bits and pieces of the pomp and pageantry. There’s always so much to see. 🙂

  25. Very rich service thus far… Archbishop of Canterbury gave spoke powerfully just now of the the coronation as a call to sacrificial service enabled by the love of God.

  26. I’m watching too @Kate.

I like that homily by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Maybe it’s just me but at beginning when he did the oath to the bible, King Charles kept gulping. He looked nervous and he’s probably thinking, this is it, the full responsibility. I mean not to mention the weight of all the gold that they put on him. 😂

Seriously though, I felt sad for him because it would have been nice to have his 2 sons to help him carry that responsibility but it’s not meant to be.

  27. @agdr03,

Agreed – he did look nervous.

Nice to see Prince William paying tribute in the formal section of the service.

It is a huge role to take on isn’t it… Understatement!!

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Kate @agdr03
I’ll have to catch the sermon later if there’s a ‘replay’. I did like the familiarity of much of the religious ceremony, the Liturgy of the Word. Loved the choir’s rendition of Alleluia and caught the Blessing which was touching. Now the pledge and the fanfare. Heartwarming somehow, so many thousand kilometers away.

  29. @Kate, yes I like it too that Prince William was part of the formal section. That was nice that he gave him a kiss too after pledging his allegiance to him. 😊

  30. Yeah that familiarity @GB in the mass.

If you can watch it somewhere, try to.

    The choir is amazing. 👏🏻

  31. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@agdr03, Yes I watched the crowning of Camilla and am listening to the choir. So sweet that William saluted his dad familiarly on top of the formality.

  32. Yes, and I’m pretty sure King Charles said thank you William. ☺️

  33. A precious moment! I didn’t catch that @agdr03.

I wanted Camilla to stop adjusting her hair…when she was crowned. She probably wasn’t aware how noticeable it was.

  34. Maybe a hair was out of place or got caught when the crown was put on her head. 😁

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate I felt that Camilla’s crown was put on not quite right, or had pulled on her hair.

I’m admiring the interior of Westminster Abbey.

  36. Yes, the Archbishop spent a lot of time practising crowning ‘anyone who moved’ in the weeks running up (he was on TV saying this). Perhaps he put it on so firmly that he squished hair into he eyes!

  37. @GB – the interior is beautiful indeed.

    Lovely gardens too.

  38. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, I’m very intrigued to see that there is a turbaned singer in the choir. Is the choir inter-religious?

  39. @GB – I don’t know… but it seems to be a combination of different choirs so that might well be the case.

It didn’t look to me like it was just the Abbey Choir … I’m not sure from memory but I don’t think the Abbey Choir has girl choristers.

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, I like how the Archbishop always looks like he’s smiling in a most relaxed way.

  41. https://www.classicfm.com/music-news/king-charles-coronation-music-programme/

‘Under the baton of Andrew Nethsingha, the service will be sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, together with girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and from Truro Cathedral Choir.

A small group of singers from The Monteverdi Choir will also join the main choral ensemble for the service.

The Ascension Choir, a handpicked gospel choir will also perform as part of the service and the King’s Scholars of Westminster School will proclaim the traditional ‘Vivat’ acclamations.’

  42. @GB – I met him for a couple of work occasions and he was very twinkly and funny.

  43. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Dear @Kate, thank you for all the information about the choirs. I guessed there were several choirs involved because of the different uniforms, but they were so well matched nevertheless!!! Loved the colours that contrasted and complemented each other. It was a very beautiful ceremony. The Gold State Coach took my breath away.

It was well worth the time watching as well as listening to the amazing orchestra and choirs.

I joined in the ‘Amen’ to the prayers as well!

  44. This is not about TV dramas I’m currently watching, but about a film I will be seeing soon at the Seattle International Film Festival. It’s a collaboration between Singapore and South Korea. I’m so excited! https://youtu.be/d11_YG8Ve8I

Maybe after the film festival circuit it’ll be picked up to appear in your local theaters. Or maybe a streaming service will air it. Keep an eye out for Ajoomma!

  45. Looking ahead to June…the film that is opening the Seattle International Film Festival is supposed to go into general release on June 2nd. Tickets were sold out opening night, this film’s only showing at SIFF, so I’m going to have to wait to see it. It looks wonderful. Here’s the trailer for Past Lives. The film’s male lead, Teo Yoo, was the ML in the Kdrama Love to Hate You.

    https://youtu.be/z0P_a8QA0wc

  46. Kalimera @Welmaris,

I am waiting for Past Lives as well! I have watched the trailer during the Berninale! I am waiting for its release since our correspondents said that it was a gem!

As for Ajoomma, I will keep it in mind!

  47. @Packmule3,

Kalimera! I do hope you are okay! Can you open an open thread for “Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938?” Thank you in advance!

  48. Hi all,

While waiting for new episodes of shows, I did a little research into Yoo In-Na’s career.

She came to prominence, initially – for her role in ‘The Queen and I’ in 2012. In the show, she is an up-and-coming actress playing a famous queen (fictional ‘real history’ methinks) in a Josean period drama.

Our hero, played by Ji Hyun Woo (hadn’t come across him before) is a historic character from that very period, 300 years previously. He is a nobleman and scholar.

    Time travel is involved!

This show is of its era production value-wise. I am enjoying it however as a fun interlude. If you like this type of story, you may do too.

I am watching it on YouTube and I think it is available for US viewers of Prime Video too.

  49. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, I watched that show under the title “Queen In-hyun’s Man”. I liked it a lot. It did rather make sense overall which is always great in a time-travel/jump Show.

  50. Oh good to hear @GB! It’s good blend of serious and comic scenes. I enjoyed the scene and scenes resulting from our FL, naughtily, misleading the ML about the proper way to say goodbye in 2012!

  51. Sure, @Cleopatra. Give me half an hour.

  52. Thank you @Packmule3! <3

  53. My May dramas are:

–Dr. Cha (it has made me laugh a lot, though it’s the story of a woman who is unloved by her husband and taken for granted by her children). I keep telling myself not to watch it, yet every Saturday I find myself turning it on. I’m worried about the ending more than anything since I don’t want the FL to end up with her husband again because he is so slimy.

–My Perfect Stranger – I thought there were some clunky moments in the first two episodes (e.g., when the FL kept berating her dad from the past–I ended up FF-ing through her fussing), but the next two sucked me in. I love a good time travel drama. Now that I’ve caught up, I’ll join the conversation over on that thread.

–The Good/Bad Mother – This one makes me uneasy, as I’ve said over on the thread for it. The opening music makes it seem like it’s going to be a light-hearted family/rural drama when it’s actually about an abusive mom and a corrupt son. I’ll stick with it because the acting is so good.

It’s hard for me to watch three ongoing dramas at once. (I sometimes confuse the people from the village in MPS with the people from TGBM!). So I don’t think I’ll take on any additional ones right now, especially since the three I’m watching are running almost back to back (MPS – M/T; TGBM – W/Th; Dr. Cha – S/Su). I was watching The Package, which I found enjoyable since most of it takes place in France, but it’s on the back burner until at least one of these three current dramas are finished. The only non-k-drama I’m watching is Ted Lasso, which I watch with my hubby every Tuesday night… (We have yet to finish the Marvel Universe stuff because we haven’t been wild about the movies from Phase Four…)

  54. I am now in town for the Seattle International Film Festival, which officially begins tonight with the opening film Past Lives. I was able to snag a ticket for tonight’s gala, and am excited to see this USA film that was written and directed by Celine Song, a Korean-Canadian, with dialogue in both English and Korean. Here’s what the SIFF website says about Past Lives:

Korean-Canadian playwright Celine Song (“Endlings”) makes her directorial debut with this beautiful and delicate romance about the depth of love and connection, as two childhood best friends reunite years after an untimely separation.

And, again, here’s a link to the trailer: https://youtu.be/fCh-Dx79uGc

In the run-up to the opening of SIFF, some movies that have already been released in theaters have had special showings. Last night I saw Polite Society, a film out of England that focuses on two sisters in a Pakistani family. It was a fun film, as it turns the martial arts genre on its head, and even includes a Bollywood song-and-dance sequence. One of my favorite lines, spoken by a school chum of the female lead, went something like, “They’re tropes because they work!” I hope Polite Society will soon be available for streaming, because I recommend it. Until then, let me pique your interest with the trailer: https://youtu.be/FzeyWvDfk2I

And last night, as I left the cinema, I discovered across the street a shop that sells Korean street food. If you’ve watched the South Korean reality show Jinny’s Kitchen (streaming on Prime Video), you’d recognize the corn dogs this shop sells. TTeokbokki is also on the menu. But I ordered fried bulgogi mandu (dumplings) and sodduk (mini sausages and rice cakes on a skewer, fried, then doused with sweet chili sauce). Yum!

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks for the info, link and review @Welmaris. I watched another review of Past Lives and now am on the look out for it!! 🙂

  56. Last night I attended the Opening Film, Past Lives, of the Seattle International Film Festival. During the opening remarks, I was awed to learn that the festival programmers watched about 6,000 films—various lengths and genres—to select the 264 films shown at this year’s festival. The SIFF Artistic Director told how she was in a line to see a film at the Sundance Film Festival, when she noticed a lively group waiting to see a different film. Their enthusiasm made her decide to leave the line she was in and join the line for a film she hadn’t planned to see. She said that from the first scene of Past Lives, she knew it was special.

A quick word about why film festivals are important: they provide opportunity for the work of first-time filmmakers and films that lack distribution arrangements to be seen.

In a Q & A session after the screening of Past Lives, screenwriter and director Celine Song shared that the story of this film is semi-autobiographical. One night she was sitting in a bar between her first love from Korea and her husband of many years, translating from Korean to English, and English to Korean, for two men who would have never met if it hadn’t been for her. She thought to herself that other patrons of the bar would not imagine the story that brought the three of them together at that moment…and then decided she, with her scriptwriting skills, would tell the story herself. The scene at the bar bookends this film: when we start with these three people, we don’t know who they are or why they’re there; when the film ends and we’re back to the scene in the bar, we know these people, care about them, and understand what brought each of them to that time, place, and emotional state.

Love triangles are nothing new to drama, but Celine Song has crafted her story carefully so that it reflects real life, real emotions, and grown-up considerations. She doesn’t see love as having winners, losers, and prizes to be claimed. She doesn’t grab for drama and sacrifice her vision of true love, even though she makes it clear she is aware of dramatic tropes.

What is love? What is fate? What is destiny? These questions permeate Past Lives. The Korean concept of inyeon is introduced to non-Korean audience members: the belief that every encounter a person has with another person, no matter how trivial, reflects fate. But in her comments during the Q & A at SIFF, Celine Song clarified that not all inyeon is equal. The inyeon of a person delivering water to someone at a restaurant is not of the same caliber as the inyeon between a mother and child, or between a married couple. The important thing to learn from the concept of inyeon, she believes, is that all encounters between people have consequence, small or large, and it is the adding together of things great and small that create our fate.

Celine’s story shows that exercising patience, trust, and allowing a beloved one space are deep expressions of love. This is a grown-up form of love that is not often seen in dramas, but important in real life.

Without giving away spoilers, here are some things to watch for in the movie:

–In key scenes, the direction of travel, walking or in a car, is significant. Think of a timeline: the past is to the left and the future is to the right. [This insight comes from Celine Song, herself.]

–There are several references to the female lead and crying. This is a Chekhov’s Gun. Take note. When does she cry? When doesn’t she? Does she cry in front of someone, or hide her tears? If she cries in the presence of another person, what is the significance?

Past Lives will be in limited released in theaters in June. Keep an eye out for it in your area. After its theater run, I hope it will be offered by a streaming service.

  57. Here’s a clip from the Sundance Film Festival with the actors of Past Lives talking about their characters: https://youtu.be/IzxJBZPC1Uc

  58. Thank you @Welmaris for this fascinating background to the film!

Looking forward to seeing it when it comes out.

  59. Have any of you seen the 2016 Rom Com ‘Don’t Dare to Dream’? It’s out on Prime Video (in the UK at least).

I am watching it in between other shows and enjoying it.

There is some excellent situation comedy in this show and our central characters are thrown together, at one point, in the funniest ‘meet – later – cute’ situation! I can’t give this away without spoiling too much of the plot.

It stars Gong Hyo-jin, Jo Jung-suk and Go Kyung-pyo. The cast is full of well-known faces – some in early career stages. It is very well acted.

It’s about an aspirant TV announcer who narrowly misses an opportunity to present the news at SBC and is a weather forecaster instead on a temporary rather than permanent contract and a lower status within the station. She is regularly asked – mid forecast – by the seedy director to make her body angles as appealing as possible to the viewers.

She had an unrequited crush for 3 years on a well-known announcer/presenter who, for reasons that will become clear, has been working in Thailand for some time.

When they meet again she also encounters his best friend.

What happens between the three of them is the heart of the story.

There are also a cast of characters who are all related by marriage/marital discord and friendship. I haven’t bothered to follow the sub-plots as closely.

    Anyway, it’s worth exploring.

  60. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I decided to try a zany, comical cdrama about one guy financing, producing and acting ie making a drama of his own and all the things that bad dramas suffer from.

From MyDramaList: “When the lead actor is also the benefactor funding the whole shoot, and he’s hysterically changing the script to fulfill his dream of being a hero in various costumes, things are bound to get a little out of control.

The humble yet stubborn screenwriter is powerless to resist the demands of the show’s investor who wants to be the male lead in every conceivable story. As a result, the plot is haywire, and character building is a fail. From palace fights and suspense to xianxia and time travel, it’s a melting pot of costume dramas. With everyone thinking that they’re witnessing a farce, you’ll find that beneath it all is an actor’s unrestrained pursuit for redemption and for his dreams.”

It’s from iQiyi, 24 12-minute episodes, and the crew is having a blast. 🙂

  61. Thanks @GB – what is the name of the drama?

  62. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

LOL I forgot to mention the name of the drama in the end? 😂 🤣 It’s “An Actor’s Rhapsody (2023)”.

  63. @GB… adds to the anticipation…haha! I want to check this out. Thanks again.

  64. First of all, to those in the world who are celebrating it today, Happy Mothers Day! I know there are many stages and variations of motherhood. I’m glad there’s a day to remind us to appreciate those who have mothered us.

The screening I saw last night at the Seattle International Film Festival, Ajoomma (https://www.siff.net/festival/ajoomma), ties in well with this holiday. A movie created jointly by Singapore and South Korea, it was a pleasant watch, not particularly challenging emotionally, which may be why it is said to have a light touch. The characters’ story arcs were rather shallow, so more true to life than dramatic. The female lead learned she can nurture herself when there’s no one else she has to take care of, so her personal growth was more internal than external. The actress was able to convey well what was going on in Ajoomma’s heart. And because I, myself, am an addict of Korean dramas, I felt a sisterhood with her. The male lead in the (fictitious) drama for which she’s going on pilgrimage, Yeo Jin Gu, is an actor I’ve seen in several Kdramas, and whose work I respect. I can understand why she loves him; but I also cheered when one of her friends says she prefers Gong Yoo. I recognized the other male leads, Kang Hyung Seok and Jung Dong Hwan, and was happy to see them turn in good performances in this film.

Per Wikipedia, Ajoomma has received many awards and nominations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajoomma

  65. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Thanks @Welmaris. I’ll be waiting for this film as well. Singapore has a small film/show-making community, so I’m glad we can offer a movie for external film festivals. The title alone resonates with me since I call myself ‘ahjumma’ with my younger kdrama lovers. However they are sweet enough to call me ‘unnie’ instead LOL.

  66. Retrospective having re-watched The Red Sleeve

    SPOILER ALERT

Was recommending K-dramas to the daughter of someone at church on Sunday. She is watching mostly the present-day shows and I found myself recommending The Red Sleeve as one of the best historic dramas I had seen. I then went back home and watched most of it through (with judicious use of the ff button of course!).

Lovely. A must watch. I so enjoyed watching this with the BoD community.

Jun-Ho still amazing to behold in the lead role. Many, many strong performances. Excellent visual story telling. Lovely, soulful OST. I’d forgotten how much I liked it.

I found myself rather frustrated, this time around, with the FL’s, 21st century, concern about losing herself in relationship with the King. I was impatient with her only because her reluctance delayed the time they had together. I understood too that she protected her heart with the King and wasn’t as open as she might have been because she couldn’t have all of his heart. That may have been part of her fascination for him. But I was sad for San, too, that she withheld from him in some ways.

  67. Further SPOLERS alert…

This is a very interesting article about the background to the story and the relationship between our historic characters.

I can’t remember seeing it in our discussions so am posting just in case:

    https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2022/03/13/culture/koreanHeritage/the-red-sleeve-korean-historical-drama-lee-junho/20220313150254413.html

  68. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Kate What fun!!
In a sense, I’m doing the same thing as yourself. I listened to a podcast that had drama reviewers speaking of loving Kdrama, “Goong” or “Princess Hours” (2006) It was my first ever kdrama that sucked me in too and suddenly I decided to rewatch part of it. Wouldn’t you know it… although I started at Ep 12, I could recall the beginning and I was still drawn in to binge watch much of it. It has 24 episodes, so I still have a few more to go to complete the rewatch!

Upon rewatch, I found that some of the background music was lacking, and the ML character more frustrating than ever, but at the same time, I was still rooting for the romance to finally take off. Still so delightful after all these years!!! 😍 🥹 😅 😂

  69. @GB – exactly! I can relate to the ‘I’ll just a dip a toe in to remind myself of what I liked about this show’ to a committed re-watch. This happens quite a bit on BoD because writing about a show I like is so triggering of a re-watch!

Your post has me wanting to go watch ‘Princess Hours’ now! haha. Strangely, I was thinking about PH at the weekend. I was thinking about the previous roles of actor Jo Jung Sook (brilliant in ‘Don’t Dare to Dream), as you do. I imagined that his royal bodyguard role was in ‘Princess Hours’… It turned out I had the plot mixed up with King 2 Hearts…

  70. @Kate and @GB, Goong /Princess Hours is my first love in kdrama. I love love this drama. 🥰

I actually did rewatch it a few months back when it was still available in Netflix. But it’s not there anymore. 😢

  71. @agdr03… Now I must re-watch it… but will need to sleuth out where to see it!

  72. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@agdr03 Thanks for the title of the 3rd show.

I’m still re-watching Goong. I do find it slow and frustrating with the many roadblocks this couple has to go through, but the young Yoon Eun Hye is endearing, and the ending is sweet.

  73. Hi again @agdr03

Princess Hours is on VIKI (in the UK at least): https://www.viki.com/tv/72c-princess-hours

  74. Waaaaaa @Kate. I saw it! Thank you! 😘

  75. I’m actually watching Nothing But You as well and I’m up to episode 27.

Wu Lei is so endearing on this one. ☺️

  76. Agreed, agreed…he is adorable in that role @agdr03!

  77. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@agdr03 @Kate, I ‘discovered’ Leo Wu Lei in Nothing But You. He is so endearing, indeed! Charming, boyish, sincere, and how he turns out to be so manly for his woman … I love the clear-eyed looks he gives You An.

  78. @GB – love the description of ‘clear eyed looks’… yes!

  79. Continuing to enjoy this thread. Has anyone commented on the hair in Princess Hours? @Kate there is an overlap with King Two Hearts – the sister of the monarch is played by the same actress in each.

I’m not really loving any shows right now – so I watched Forbidden Marriage which I skipped over when it was first released. What a fun watch. I really liked the two leads together and thought the ML was perfect as a king which seems to entail saying all one’s lines like a profound pronouncement. It’s made me compare the various actors playing monarchs.

I just started watching Why Didn’t I Tell You A Million Times on Netflix. It is a Japanese drama kind of a mystery/romance/fantasy starring Takeru Sato (Incurable Case of Love). I’m three episodes in and really enjoying it. There is another ML who plays a cop who is great in it.

  80. Thank you, @Good Twin, for posting here that Takeru Sato’s new drama is out on Netflix. I’ve been wanting to watch it. When I added it to my MDL to-be-watched list, I didn’t even have its English title.

  81. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Good Twin, ah, a Takeru Sato drama? Probably a must watch… or rather, must find time to watch. It also sounds like a genre that is usually catnip for me.

  82. @Good Twin – aha! Makes sense that I made the connection. Thank you.

Princess Hours – the hair. I watched episodes 1 and 2 last night.

I actually like our ML with that longer slightly shaggy haired look – very attractive on him and suits his face shape and features. Other hair styles not so much!

  83. @Good Twin, last night I watched three episodes of Why Didn’t I Tell You a Million Times? and think it well done. Despite its premise, it’s not too heavy (at least what I’ve seen. But at the end of Episode 3, Takeru Satoh brought tears to my eyes with his character’s reaction to the words of the FL. I thought Takeru Satoh turned in an excellent performance in First Love, and I think he’s upped his game here.

  84. @welmaris – I breezed through it and have one more episode to go. I didn’t think he was that convincing of a crier in Incurable Case of Love but he certainly was here. There is a funny scene in a later episode where they fight and the only word spoken between them is a whistle. There is also a charming scene in episode 6 involving children that delighted me. The title, the featured children’s story, and the theme are good reminders to tell people you love how much they mean to you.

    TS is criminally handsome!!!

  85. @Good Twin, do we want to ask @Packmule3 for a thread dedicated to Why Didn’t I Tell You a Million Times? Or is it okay to watch, enjoy, and keep our thoughts to ourselves?

As for talking to family and friends, and expressing affection, I just finished a screening at the Seattle International Film Festival that makes a strong case for that. It’s the South Korean film Next Sohee. I rated it five out of five stars, but it isn’t a lighthearted movie. After watching so many Kdramas, the subject matter didn’t surprise me. This movie depicts a sad situation, but doesn’t resort to gratuitous angst. Bae Doona gives a strong, yet touching, performance.
    https://www.siff.net/festival/next-sohee

  86. The Cat Who Lived a Million Times is apparently a well known children’s book in Japan that explores love, death and rebirth.

  87. I read about that movie @Welmaris but I don’t think I have the emotional fortitude to watch it at the moment. It looks really wrenching. I would love a thread regarding Why Didn’t I Tell You A Million Times @packmule3 – there some themes that would be nice to explore with others who are watching.

  88. Loved ‘Princess Hours’ – more this time than the first time! Great blend of sageuk and modern day rom com. Our understated ML was so attractive – albeit frustratingly lacking in the things to say at strategic points in the show!

I did feel sorry for the lonely second ML though. I know he presumed on the way things should be and was manipulative at times… but on the flip side, he was manipulated by his awful Mum … (the Mums in ‘Princess Hours’ warrant a reflection by themselves!).

Was it believable that both princes fell for the FL? Yes and no. The trope that the cool and refined male falls for the, at times, dorky female lead… But I bought it in the end. The actress playing the FL did a fantastic job too.

While I am reporting back, I have just discovered ‘1% of Something’…loving it. Anyone else seen and enjoyed it?

  89. @kate. Yes I think it was discussed briefly
on the page about kisses?? Not sure. I do remember learning that it’s actually a remake which (somewhat)explains the retro feel and his hideous clothes. IIRC, @pm3 preferred the first because the ML had more of a growth arc.
I don’t mind the ML in the 2016 version -maybe because I’m not comparing him to anyone else- and I’m a sucker for his deep voice. It’s a show I consider a guilty pleasure and rewatch more often than I should admit.

  90. @birdie007 – I like his deep voice too! And the kisses… the fun and natural and cheeky chemistry between the leads.

I didn’t know it was a re-make – so I’ll check the other version out.

I can imagine I might be re-watching this too!

  91. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Kate, re: ‘1% of Something/Anything’.

Several of us like the remake. I have said it before… the production quality is terrible and yes ML’s clothes are hideous, but the change in their relationship when he really decides to treat her as his girlfriend and starts to take her feelings into account are sweet, plus protect her.

He’s so childishly petty, it’s good to have him finally grow. Grandpa couldn’t do a thing about him, but he shoved poor FL into his life to get him to change. Both grandpa and grandson are terrible with that attitude. Fortunately for them, FL’s good nature and patience did get him to grow up.

The original, I only managed to watch a bit of, but couldn’t tolerate because of it’s pace. It’s much longer. I prefer the remake which someone described as just watching 2 people date and get to know each other… so much fun!

  92. @GB and @birdie007,

Encouraging because I am thoroughly enjoying it. I like the way the ML’s childishness also translates into a sense of playful fun when required which creates so many good scenes. It’s as if the good aspects of his character are only just under the surface under a crusty exterior! The FL is a great character and I relate to her leaving her mobile phone all over the place. She is torn between her initial assessment of ML and the chemistry experiment that is their formal dating agreement! That shift happens very quickly doesn’t it with the first stolen kiss!

I wonder, re the styling of the ML, whether the wardrobe designer was told to ‘go bold’ because the ML’s brash personality. But going for some ‘loud’ designs at times doesn’t work well with his medium height, muscular body type (makes him look stocky) and not really with the personality of the ML either. He’s ‘to the point’ and a little too sure of himself with women… but would that character wear a checked suit? I’ve seen checked suits and fashion forward or slightly Vivienne Westwood-looking designs in C-dramas on younger male characters. The male lead tends to get something more sophisticated. They’ve given the ML’s cousin a far more elegant look haven’t they?

The FL is also badly styled. It doesn’t matter too much because she is very pretty and has a radiant personality. But the palette of colours they use washes her out. She looks ill in some scenes! I was trying to work out what palette would suit her better. She shouldn’t be wearing white for instance.

So, money must have been short when they hired the wardrobe team!

  93. I love 1% of Something! It’s one of the best rom Coms ever. The leads are so fun to watch and the skinship is great.
I have watched the original drama from 2003 “1% of Anything.” It is difficult to compare it with 2016 version because they are 2 different genres. “1% of Anything” is a family drama of 26 episodes. As such, it has multiple couples and a lot more emphasis on the family dynamics than 2016 version, which is a straight rom com.
For example, FL Dada has 2 brothers plus a foster sister and lives in the family home in 2003. The plotline and attitudes reflect the TV attitudes of 20 years ago, so I got frustrated with some characters and some of the dated attitudes. One of the positive differences is that FL has a much more fleshed out relationship with the Grandfather in “1% of Anything.” And the romance between the ML cousin and the FL BFF (who is her foster sister in 2003 version) is much more developed. They are a fully second lead couple. That said, the skinship is quite lacking in the 2003 version compared to the excellent skinship and kiss scenes of 2016.
Overall, I enjoyed watching “1% of Anything,” and I looked forward to watching the remake when it came out in 2016, which turned out to have many differences from the 2003 version, but is wonderful in its own right. Both dramas are worth checking out.
“1% of Anything” used to be on Dramafever, but I don’t know where it is available now.

  94. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Table, if you don’t mind one of the alternative sites, you can get it on Dramanice (and probably on Kissasian, etc.)

    https://ww1.dramanice.video/something-about-1/

  95. Hi @Table,

I’ve been watching it (2016 version) on Viki – but on my Smartphone because of some problems streaming it on my latop.

So glad you rate it. I will certainly be re-watching!

  96. ps I mention the tech glitch issue because I get that with odd episodes of shows on Viki.

For the whole of this show – bar the final couple of episodes- a message comes up with an X when I try to view the episodes on my laptop. It informs me that the media could not be loaded because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported. When this happens I transfer to my Android phone.

This is just in case any of you encounter the same problem with this particular show.

  97. Thanks for the information about where to find “1% of Something” (2016) @GB and @Kate.

I was not sure where you could watch the original 2003 drama anymore. “1% of Anything”(2003) used to be on Dramafever. It is not on Viki or NF. I found it here on one of the “other sites.” I really like the relationship between the female lead and Grandfather in this version. It was sad to see their interactions go away for the 2016 version. I will be interested to read your thoughts on “1% of Anything” (2003) @Kate.

  98. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I may post this link again for the What Are We Watching in June thread. I just glanced at this review and since kfangurl’s taste is quite similar to mine, I’m pretty excited about trying this jdorama.

    Title: Silent (2022)
    Genre: Romance, Family
It’s just 11 episodes, all subbed

    Here’s the review. https://thefangirlverdict.com/2023/05/28/review-silent-japan/

  99. @GrowingBeautifully, I saw the 2022 Jdorama Silent a few months ago, liking it well enough to finish it. The script has some issues, in my opinion, with some character and relationship development–a little melo, a little angsty–but it’s still a worthwhile watch.

  100. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    RE: Silent
Thanks for your review @Welmaris. I’ll start on this jdorama soon!

  101. I’ve finished Nothing But You and I liked it. 😊

I like how this couple knew when to be together as bf/gf then to be together as a married couple. They worked hard to have their relationship work.

I just love Wu Lei in this. 🥰

  102. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@agdr03, I really enjoyed watching Leo Wu Lei in this. I never noticed him before. Rightly, I understand, he’s considered the nation’s little brother, or something like that. That boyish charm is intoxicating. I wonder how he’ll be in 10 years!!! 😝 🤔 🤭

  103. @GB, he’d still be charming and way more manly. 😉🥰

Maybe if you have time try to watch Love Like The Galaxy. ☺️

  104. @agdr03 and @GB,

I second @agdr03’s recommendation of ‘Love Like the Galaxy’.

That said, I found Wu Lei especially gorgeous and appealing in ‘Nothing but You’. It really seemed to suit him – found his sweet spot as an actor.

  105. Before I explore ‘Silent’ – I have been enjoying a re-watch of Crash Landing on You.

I am finding segments that I missed before because I was impatient to get to the end! I missed the BOD discussion when it originally aired.

What a great show! So many facets to appreciate. So many worthwhile sub-narratives.

The poignant quality of the ‘impossible’ relationship, and the question of how they resolve it, parallels the similarly poignant quality of the central relationship in ‘My Love from another Star’ also by the same author. The fated quality of the Ri-Ri relationship has this wonderful – improbable but welcome – Swiss back story which encourages their tenacity in keeping going.

I am also enjoying the development of the second romance; the wonderful supporting cast of characters; the critique of power and empty wealth when compared with true camaraderie and so much more.

  106. Also… comparing the kiss scenes with ‘1 % of Something’, on CLOY the scenes are mostly shot with the camera pulling out to a wide shot or with a coat or piece of hair discreetly in the way of detailed lip action. I wonder if this is a contractual thing when you get big stars in a show like this or whether it is about the grand romance aspect of the show which doesn’t call for more visible skinship… Or was this something the two stars required and negotiated as protective of their privacy as they explored their relationship?

  107. Speaking of upcoming Rom-Coms – ‘King the Land’ is due to air on June 10th with Lee Junho and YoonA! I so so hope this is a goody and that he maintains his record of excellent performances! I am not a huge fan of YoonA as an actress… but let’s see!

It’s on Netflix… can’t tell much from this trailer:

    https://youtu.be/YetuXf3kNs8

  108. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Kate, Yes I’m waiting for ‘King the Land’. I’ve the same sentiment as you. I really like Junho’s work but am rather cool towards Yoona. All I can say is that I guess I prefer her to a couple of other actresses. LOL.

I will try the show and see if I can stick with it.

  109. @GB – reflecting on this… they are going full-on idol drama aren’t they? Based on his current swoonworthyness and her fan-base. The risk is that he ends up having to work very hard to compensate for her acting tending to be bland.

  110. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @Kate, RE: ‘King the Land’
I had not thought of it but you are right. They are both from the idol singer arena. The difference is that I’ve come to see Junho as an amazing actor in his own right but cannot say the same about Yoona.

I want to believe that I’m pretty tolerant, however, and will give Yoona and the show a chance. I usually give people time to grow, and am patient, hence I am willing enough to accept quite a lot that is not great, as long as I do not get heartily annoyed by it. 😬 🙄 😇

  111. @GB – agreed! Let’s hope this pairing works! Let’s hope for good screenwriting too!

  112. I’ll join you @GB and @Kate on King The Land. That’s the only kdrama that I want to watch for now. I like Junho too after Red Sleeve. ☺️ I’m not really into Yoona either. 😊

  113. @agdro3 – Great! Looking forward.

  114. I stumbled upon One Day Off on Viki–it has been a welcome respite to all the downer dramas I’ve been watching (and dropping) lately. It is off-beat (and off the beaten path!) and very quiet. Not a lot happens in an episode. I especially liked the episode where she visited the Buddhist monastery. Everything feels like it happens in real time and it doesn’t feel scripted.

Four episodes are out–four more episodes will drop on Wednesday (I think it will only be eight total).

I don’t think we need a separate post on this show because there’s not a lot to comment about or analyze. But I hope others will give it a try when they are looking for a relaxing show.

  115. @BethB, this drama, “One Day Off,” is on my “to be reviewed” pile. Glad you liked it, too.

  116. Howdy! How are you? Have a safe trip and hopefully you’ll have time to watch dramas in between work and rest. 🙂

I’ve started watching Gen Z because it’s Zhao Lusi. It’s got 40 episodes so yeah. LOL!

  117. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @pkml3, if you have a moment to open the What We Are Watching in June Thread, I believe that we’ll have some shows to recommend.

I couldn’t stop watching jdorama ‘Silent’ (2022). Poignant, full of feels, melancholy-happy.

I feel I will probably enjoy ‘One Day Off’ too.

Oh, and can we have the next My Perfect Stranger thread, please?

  118. I’ll be home tomorrow morning, @GB, and will open the threads on my laptop. Only have my iPhone with me so can’t do much.

  119. I heard cdramas have a 40-episode limit now. 😂😂😂

I’ll download dramas for the trip. Is Gen Z on Viki or Netflix?

  120. Oh that’s what I heard too but now they’re doing up to 60 but it’s put into two parts. I don’t think I like to have it cut especially in cdramas. 😄

It’s not in Netflix and Viki, it’s on Youku. But I’m sure it’s in other streaming sites.

Not sure if it’ll be interesting enough for you though, it’s about TCM (traditional Chinese medicine). 😃

  121. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Righty ho @pkml3. Have a safe trip and good rest too!

    🫡 😄 😇 😃

  122. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3 I found One Day Off‘s vignettes more than the sum of its parts. At this stage I’m not sure that the episodes are going to be tied together with an arc, other than that of the FL’s growth through insights from her Saturday trips, but each episode is thoughtful and thought-provoking. More good news is that this is not a noona romance.

I’m not even sure I have much to say about each episode, but I was feeling that this Show deserves 1 open thread so that viewers’ thoughts might be marshaled together.

If you have the chance, please open 1 single thread for One Day Off.
