Heartbeat: Open Thread

The thread is open.

Is anybody watching this? @GB? @Cleopatra?

It’s been ages since I watched that hilarious “Zombie Detective” and I’m ready for a new low-brow, horror-comedy (hor-com) kdrama. Starring Ok Taekyeon and Won Ji An, an actress who looks familiar though I swear I’ve never seen any of her dramas before. Hmmm…does she look like my future daughter-in-law? Weird.

“Heartbeat” is on Amazon Prime.

Let’s enjoy the show.

Hi @pkml3, if you’re going to be having fun on this thread then I’m in. Truth to tell, I probably want to poke fun at poor Taecyon LOL. I think I did watch the first episode and then went on to other stuff. Still looking good, our Taec, and in his element as the ridiculous vampire who woke just 1 day too early LOL.

  2. Yes, I’m midway through Ep 1. He looks good in a suit, just like his old comrade Junho in “King the Land.”

He simply has the best face to look martyred or put-upon by a girl.

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@pkml3 He certainly has the face to carry the show. I like his goofy expressions, and the fact that he’s probably taking on a tough cookie with that girl.

Episode 2 had me laughing heartily as he tried to prove that he’s a vampire. Taec at his silliest best.

And getting drunk on instant cup noodles!!! LOLOL.

  5. Kalimera @Packmule3!

I haven’t watched this one… Dunno If I will start it. Although I have heard that it is funny. It is not open on Prime for us and that pisses me off.

Hi @Cleo, pity you cannot get the Show on Prime. It has it’s funny moments, especially when Taecyon does not mind looking totally ridiculous.

He does model clothes soooooo well! And we get to see many crazy poses LOL.

  7. Arrrgh! Another drama! I saw an interview entirely in English that Taec gave with Eric Nam. He is a funny guy. He said that he (and the other members) weren’t allowed by their company to take antagonist roles while the group was active. The company thought that possible backlash from fans would damage the actor and potentially the other group mates. He also told the story that he was recruited in NYC as a model, not idol or actor. When will I find the time?

  8. Ugh.

    Episode 1.

    Taecyeon’s vampire character is fine.

But the female lead is too stupid to live. She:

Enters a gated residence all by herself
Enters an abandoned mansion all by herself
Walks down a dark hallway all by herself
Goes down an unlit staircase to a basement all by herself
Sees the coffin and lifts the cover all by herself

It’s frustrating that the suspense in this first episode is contrived via the stupidity of its lead female.

Then when Taecyeon climbs out of the coffin, she yells at him to leave her alone?

    Who’s she kidding?

SHE should have left well enough alone! She intruded on his space, and death.

Can this hor-com be saved by Ok Taecyeon from the dustbin of dramas I dropped because they were filled with similar illogical decision-making process? I’ll check Ep 2 before deciding.

  9. Hi All,
Actually, wasn’t initially crazy about Heartbeat but it has grown on me now that I have watched through episode 7. I’ve been in the mood for light of heart (pun intended😂) dramas this summer, and this is just that. The auxiliary characters are entertaining, Taecyeon is both eye candy, handsomely dressed and groomed, and his character is funny and likable, and his interactions with first lead are fun.

Probably necessary to watch more that one or two episodes of this one.

@LootieLyn, I’m enjoying this. Got to Episode 5 or 6 and had a good laugh now and then. Loved that Taec does his silliness so professionally. LOL.

  11. Isn’t it a traditional cornerstone of the horror genre that people do stupid things and end up dead/wishing they were dead/undead? –All of the way back to Pandora’s box.

I’ll start watching as soon as I have found some traction in Fireworks.

Hi @Fern, @pkml3 I never really thought of it, but now that you mention it, I remember that I often find myself cringing in disbelief that ‘smart’ characters take unnecessarily big risks in mystery, horror, and crime sort of shows. I’ve become inured to them to an extent, no longer surprised or even noting them LOL.

I just wanted to leave a note here to say that a scene in Episode 7 had me in stitches. Perhaps it looked even funnier because I was using the 1.5 speed option, but my stomach muscles had a great workout!

Having watched up to Episode 10, I give credit to the show makers for giving us a well-paced, entertaining story and relatable, sufficiently engaging characters, even if some of them aren’t human. At this stage in the plot, we can see how things can come to a head and suspense starts to mount.

The funniest scenes to me are those of our ML enthusiastically getting drunk. I have to hand it to Taec for not caring how ridiculous he looked.

I like that so much is revealed by this time and that both parties of our OTP are not kept in the dark, so that a well-informed decision can be made on saving our good guys.

The other interesting thing is that the vampire trope is turned on its head so that it’s the humans who suck them dry, or bite them or need their heart or blood. Let’s see how that plays out. 🙂
