Thanks @pkml3! I knew that this thread would probably pop up in the middle of your night (my day). It’s another fun ride as we rewatch this oldie but goodie. 🙂
I am not available tomorrow for the rewatch.I will look at the comments when I am free and will join you next week.
@Mon mor, thanks for letting us know. See you in 8 days’ time!
I’m 17 minutes early on this thread, but this is just to let anyone who comes by know that we’re open for business in a few minutes time!!!
Hello, here while doing small others things, like getting a drink. 😉
Hi @WE, I’ve got papaya and a mild beer next to me. I’ve actually forgotten Ep 3, I should breeze through it quickly!!!
Hi GB, I watched until ep7. Many things I didn’t remember, like a scandal scene on a plane. The drama is very easy to understand, so relax. And gosh, it’s crazy cheesy.
I am here too.
Let’s start now!!!
Hi @FF, here we go!!!
Hi all. Getting a bowl of cereal and a cup of coffee. Almost ready!
Hi @SD! Good morning!
Episode 3 starts with recap of the first 2 episode.
Hi FF and SDD.
So, the hero killed a killer.
First hint for FL about something strange.
Next hint: body going in shadow.
@FF, yes, I find that SJJ’s dramas start with recaps to bring us up to speed.
She faint and elipse to the hospital.
So a gray time zone with of course flashback to know what happened to the ML and various other problems.
Poor Hui Jin, her Manager and Friend Jo just won’t believe her.
HI WE, Hi SD, Hi GB.
Here one flashback. But it’s not over. The writer will reveal what happenned then little by little.
Hi @FF and @WE. Hello @GB. I like that this recap is a waking remembrance.
SJJ doesn’t forget little logical details. Like FL remember the blood on the dress and check.
Dong Min is such a narcissist… thinks every woman admires him. I pity his manager!
I did not pre-watch this episode today, I wonder what happened to Bong Do after their meet up in the woods.
We get 2 recaps actually. One at the beginning and then a narration by HJ to her friend. So to her the dead man became a mummy and bones before he disappeared. I thought he just turned into ashes immediately.
The talisman is with Hui Jin? …. how come?
Here the shot start with FL looking in her back.
Can’t find the phone. But there will be another reason why: she find the talisman.
Now, we’ll need an explanation about that, so a later flashback.
@WE, fortunately she didn’t get turned off by the blood on the talisman. Even more fortunately she and Jo didn’t tear up and throw away the bloody talisman.
@FF, when she fainted, the staff searched and found her and picked up her things that fell out of her purse. The talisman was near her stuff so they put it into her purse. However she dropped her mobile phone as well but no one saw that. Bong Do went to look for his talisman and picked up the phone instead.
We can say this situation was build so the ML will have no other choice to go to see the FL in her hospital room.
So, to create a further situation with ML locked in the bathroom so FL get another proof he’s from another time. It’s something complicate to give proof, think about it. But the story need the FL have no doubt about that to have the great romance over TIME.
@GB, well see. So, with a bit more screentime, and thinking SJJ could put another little twist. FL friends about to tears up the talisman. Then find a quick way it doesn’t happen. Only, we have a small cardiac arrest when it’s about to happen. So a scene “twisted”, like SJJ twisted scenes in Yumi Cells.
True @WE, SJJ made sure she set it up well so that BD would turn up at the hospital. Can’t recall how he proved that he was from the past except that he disappeared.
I am thinking BD must be very hungry. He spent most of the last day and all night holed up in the empty palace. But when he comes out the world is a different world from what he knows.
@WE the whole situation is really clever. I admit my knowledge of time travel tropes is weak, but I cannot think of a situation set up this way. If FL had her wits about her (or was clever) she would have realized something of what was amiss when the dead body turned to bones and then to dust, but this is much easier to understand AND provides additional comedic scenes as the ML is and then is not in the shower. Lovely.
Here the famous scene when ML looks outside the place… the new city, the new time.
Well made. Close up on eyes, first shot is (I don’t remember what but a kind of zoom).
Then crazy montage about the feeling of dizziness.
THen building deconstructing reconstructing.
Looks like he tries to return to his time without the talisman. Since he cannot go back, he decides to dress up like the modern day people and look for HJ.
@GB, yea the Bong Do flash back. Bong Do realize that he has time travelled after touring the palace. He is still trying to decipher “shooting”.
Now we have to devise a way for BD to find HJ or for her to find him. Luckily modern devices can be traced quickly or this show would take too long!!
BD uses his smarts to figure out how he has to dress up after stealing clothes LOL.
I also like the cleverness of the ring tone. It would sound familiar to the ML; modern music would not have, and yet it is coming from this small rectangular object! Just a nice touch.
As ironic joke, ML steal the clothes of the SML.
Of course, like often: we learn first SML doesn’t find his clothes, then small flashback showing why.
I can say for sure SJJ doesn’t even need to think this kind of situation in linear time but write it directly like that, because… with my far smaller experience but using her style, I already write small situations like that without even thinking about linear time. LOL!!
Life imitates the show… Jang Ok Jung steals the King from Queen In Hyun LOL.
At last HJ sees the horse in the news and realises that she was not dreaming.
@WE, yes the dizziness I feel dizzy watching the scene too.
Bong Do is quite a smart guy, he is able to observe the surroundings and dressed himself up in modern day clothings.
@FF, BD is even smart enough to know how to recognise HJ under the cap and the dark glasses.
Now the horse situation. The story build itself when the writer care about logic and details. There was a horse, he could be in the wood. But thinking about the horse, SJJ use it so the FL have proof she doesn’t dream.
Newt, ML with Staff sign.
CUT. Maybe for ads, episodes are like with 3 cuts, like “acts” in older western series.
Best joke, he didn’t know how to get into the car… how to open the door and what the seat belt was or how to put it on.
I am behind (per usual). When the ML walks around I am reminded of Jack Finney’s time travel book, Time and Again, where the protagonist has to find a building in NYC and a room in that building that has not changed at all (and dress for the part), to travel back in time. Just a faint resemblance of course since time travel does not work this way here, but it is a resonant idea that an old place, nearly the same as it was in times past, has echoes of that time.
For a moment, HJ thought BD is a staff member playing a trick on her. And BD gave that what is “staff member” answer disappointing HJ.
Now what’s surprising. THe ML doesn’t go to hospital but first FL goes out and meet him, and hospital bathroom scene will happen later.
If we think about logic, the ML couldn’t go to this hospital, he can’t know where it is. Or maybe if he could ask some people where is she.
In the car, he ask for the talisman.
In the bag, in hospital. So the situation come back to the hospital.
@GB, the famous beltseat trope of the close contact. Aahaha. SJJ use also that in W ep2.
As the ML thinks back to what this view from the palace was in his day, and we see the visualization, I am reminded of a similar scene (going forward) from My Love from A Star
@SD, that’s a nice thought, about an old place having echoes of it’s time. BD felt more at home in the palace although it was totally empty.
Now let’s make sure every character of this drama will end to visit this famous hospital room. 😀
It was a good way to get ML to be in the hospital.
GOSH, beltseat trope X2 now!!! Twice cheese.
Usually it is the male lead who puts on the seat belt for the female lead but this time it is the reverse. BD smiling when he says he is sorry and for HJ to treat him like an idiot. I find him so cute here.
LOL now he does not know what to do to get the seat belt off. So much opportunity for close contact with the ‘Queen’.
BD really observes his surroundings well and learns so much even without being told much.
We see the ML see the number in elevator. Of course, foreshadowing, will be used later. 😉
@feifei, yeah a good way to subvert the trope. But anyway, what matter is the “close contact” wooo!
At last HJ asks the questions and slowly starts to figure out that BD is really not what she thought.
@WE, you wish you were BD? So close to YIN.
Best moment, the bitche confront the FL. 🙂
Flowers hit!!!
BD is so good-naturedly patient with her. He can find her purse more than she can.
Here comes the ‘bitchy actress’.
BD finds his talisman and is relieved.
Poor flowers, they don’t deserve to star as the weapon of a ‘bitch’.
@GB, what’s not easy, it still need some reasons for an argument scene. What are the lines. So, need some setup before.
Now, it becomes a bit ridiculeous after so many scenes, but there is this “gentle joseon” music in so many scenes. Gosh. We don’t get it yet, but after the 4 next episodes, this music just make me laugh.
@FF BD gets to come real close to 2 women LOL. He physically moves the ‘bitch’ out of the ward and takes care of HJ.
The seat belt comments by ML are part of the reason FL thinks of him as a ‘player’, LOL
BD does not know how to unfasten the seat belt.
They film BD walking into the lift with the camera below, it has that big cross over effect.
HJ asking BD who is he (she just being sarcastic) and he introduced himself in the old fashion way. HJ must be bewildered.
ML should understand FL explanation about to be actress. In Joseon time there were theatrical shows?
LOL @SD, I didn’t think of that. True, the seat belt saga looked like ML was after skinship. But it was HJ who kissed him first before.
@SDD, well see. I didn’t noticed. Yeah, again the writer reuse the meat she put in a logical way.
I wish the subbers were able to read Korean and give us the translation of what BD wrote on the mirror using lipstick.
Oh gosh the flower slap is harsh and BD to the rescue.
Hello Friends!!!
I Messed up 🙁 , didn’t read the chapter numbers so I assumed it was Episode 2. Will watch Episode 2 then Episode 3 and properly comment 🙂
Hi @FGB, better late than never. We’ll read you when you return. 🙂
I like the way the camera focuses on BD’s eyes in the elevator scene. We understand immediately that he is processing all this information and understanding what is going on. It reinforces the idea that he is very quick-witted. The show I just finished, Dorian’s Affair, allows the characters a much longer (and more normal) time to get used to modern life. But this fits with BD’s character and makes his entire later scheme seem very believable.
@GB, the image quality is bad. I can’t make out the words on the mirror but they look more like Chinese characters not Korean characters.
@SDD yeah!
I’ve to go now, so I wish you all a good week! =B
@SD, yes SJJ’s MLs are very smart. They are the ones who travel through time and figure things out by themselves, most of the time.
@FF, yes, I couldn’t find a good resolution version to download. Everything looks unclear.
Bye @WE!
Goodbye and thanks everyone, see you all next week! 🙂
@FF I agree they look like Chinese characters. I had to do a quick Wikipedia check. Hangul would have been created by 1690, but Wikipedia says the elite continued to write in Chinese script long after the commoners were using Hangul to write.
Bye all. See you next week.
@SD, yes hangeul was created by King Sejong in the 1400s. BD was serving in King Hyeon Jong era around 1600s (HJ mentioned it too). Hangul would have been around and yes the elites were still writing with Chinese characters and studying Confucius teachings. They refused to be like commoners.
Bye @GB, @WE.
Interesting detailed to note considering the significance of the phone in future Episodes. Particularly the final Episode
I am responding to the comment about the phone and.
Tallisman Being in effect exchanged in the scene where the ml and his horse almost craash i to fl.
Hi @Mon mor, yes, the phone is an important instrument in this show and the fact that it was accidentally exchanged with the talisman, has significance. I forgot about that.
Hello
I am new on this website. And trying to figure out how to respond to the thread. We started about which shows we like. Chicago typewriter is definitely a favorite of mine. I just went to rewatch it and cannot find it on the major streaming services. It would seem to be on vicki but not in canada. Do you have any suggestions on how I can figure this out?
The shaggy dog industened with you reminded me of the dog ghost in chicago typewriter. Someone posted something interesting that I now forget about the significance of shaggy dogs in korean mythology.
