Thanks @pkml3!
Aaaahh… the way he looks at her and smiles. 😍🥰😋
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
I loved Episode 8!!! And wow TJC’s voice acting the different emotions with the same lines was amazing!
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Episode 9 Delicious in it’s own way with another bout of cooking by our fave voice-acting chef. At the rate he’s going, he may end up in the Boyfriend Hall of Fame.
Minor Spoilers
I’m figuring out from these last few episodes that the source of conflict now is how to keep everyone from guessing who QQC is!!! It’s strangely fun in it’s own way. How are they going to repeatedly avoid lying and also avoid saying who this doctor is who seems to be pursuing GS vigorously.
I also like the 2nd lead couple, but the guy is showing us how not to be so obscure in showing his interest. Poor girl is confused and will be more so if he does not try some QQC moves of being upfront and direct about his feelings. I loved that about QCC.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
SPOILER for EPISODE 8
SO DELISH
SPOILER
I just had to rewatch Episode 8’s sweet-simple-in between frying fish ‘confession’…. Could there be anything cuter? A cook-cute-confession LOLOL. What better confession for our Recipe Couple!
monmor
The sexual tension wil be enough to keep up the dramatic tension for awhile and they have not even kissed yet.
I get anxious with any reference to her grandparents and his parents being doctors. I have seen enough of that kind of conflict where there is family animosity although I suppose there can be a new take on it.
As someone else mentioned there is tension around his identity being revealed. The clerk in the store might become angry if she thinks the FL is dating someone other than Iridis, for example and blow things up.
For the time being I will enjoy their budding relationship.
Stacy
I loved the confession! Love how he started then paused, which I read as being a bit nervous. I like how MQQ comes across smooth and experienced at times, then other times his lack of experience shows. I also adore how he’s not embarrassed to show her or allow others to see his feelings for her.
Kate
Looking forward to reading you all… am still on Episode 5 but hope to catch up this evening and tomorrow too!

MINOR SPOILERS
EPISODES 7-12
MINOR SPOILERS
@Stacy, I really liked the low key but sincere romancing of QQC. Yes, he’s uncertain, inexperienced, but not deterred. I liked how honest he was with her about himself. I believe the only lie he told was that his teammates were busy during Valentine’s Day LOL… it was his made up reason for why he was out alone with her.
At first they were able to get by without lying but as the people who knew them came thick and fast, they had to keep changing who he was to her. I was amused to find that he’d moved from being boyfriend to a friend or to a regular customer or to a mere acquaintance (with a girlfriend who lived in Gu Sheng’s street – technically so true) who needed Gu Sheng to give directions LOL.
The other source of conflict is going to be, when most people know, will he be having floods of people disturbing him at the hospital!! Knowing whom he is, seems to be something that’s bound to happen, it’s just a matter of time.
Yes, I love how he never hides how he feels about her to her and when among their friends. That’s something his housemate Zhou Zheng should learn from him. So one couple will have lots of sweet moments (and skinship) while the other will be fraught with misunderstanding LOL.
Kate
Ep 7 – she turned him down for dinner!
I felt the disappointment. But good to have boundaries nevertheless. She is feeling swept off her feet and needs to catch her breath.
‘This is a gift from the two of us to all of you…’ bwhahaha! Brilliant move by the ML!
I have whizzed through the episodes and continue to enjoy the show a lot.
I am enjoying the dynamic between them. I like the way he handles the awareness of her reserve and shutting down at times and how he is handling this. He sees through her tactics to reduce her own anxiety. I like the conversations where he is serious with her about his intentions and also where he gently questions her about what is happening for her.
Although this is a sweet narrative there is a lot of realism in their relationship too. He needs some reassurance. She needs some space. He is working hard to date her during his rare free time and this is creating a certain nervousness in her. Her heart and head have to catch up with what is happening. I would be the same!
Kate
@GB and @Stacey – reading your comments – I loved the confession too.
Loved the look he gave her when he was about to launch into it… she clumsily filled in the gap by reciting the recipe.
Undeterred he began again.
He is both gentle and strong in this context and he gently probes unhelpful behaviours.
Kate
I have just noticed that the director Sha Wei Qi also directed ‘Gank Your Heart’ starring Wang Yibo; and coming of age drama ‘A River Runs Through It’ both of which I enjoyed.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, I do feel that this Show is quite well and deliberately directed. it matters that the Director is experienced. That said, I feel your irritation at the heavy-handed comments, but I realised that this is going to be a pattern. There is actually no ‘other’ tale to tell except how they are going to navigate the opinions, pushiness, misinterpretations and possible rancour or approval of the scary fans LOL.
I, too, felt it was OTT, the way they kept being accosted by people who knew at least one of them, and how they were interrogated as if everyone and his brother had a right to know. It’s actually very exaggerated. Although there is curiosity in the Chinese society, it’s seldom so rude or pushy.
I guess without the extreme nosiness of all and sundry, this tale of dating would become rather bland.
Now we are in the phase where we see how creative the couple can be to come up with excuses about why they are seen together, without revealing that they are dating, or who either one of them is.
I always love those tropes where the extra/fake/secondary identity becomes the source of stress. Now everyone commiserates with Character QCC because SSM seems to like someone else named Mo Qing Cheng… while we giggle because he’s the same person.
(I recall how I loved it in Healer when Jung Hoo was jealous of Healer whom Young Shim had a crush on, eventhough himself was Healer LOL.)
Fern
@Kate and @Growing Beautifully, I’ve watched up through episode 10 now. Thanks for your observations. Yes, he is moving a bit too fast for her, but once she sets her heart at ease, they will be on the same page. This reminds me of the crush in Hidden Love, where the reality of dating someone who was a crush actually can cause a lot of uncertainty and stress. I like how the ML makes the FL’s first hearing of his voice into their first meeting to widen the gap between them dating and their actual first meeting.
Gosh, the other singer, Ling Long Ti Tou is also a doctor in the same hospital as QQC? She has contacted Gu Sheng for work. I wondered why Gu Sheng didn’t mention this to QQC. Another thing she didn’t tell QQC was that the part-time worker at the grocery shop recognised her from a photo that one of his friends thoughtlessly posted online. Gu Sheng is either very naive or foolish. I know they discussed her disclosing his identity to her close friends. It will come to a boil soon and I worry that his hospital work will suffer. As @Monmor said, in her ignorance the shop clerk might make trouble if she feels her idol is being slighted. I think Gu Shen and QQC should put their heads together and decide more specifically how this sort of thing should be handled.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern, true what you and @Kate say… I didn’t feel that it was QQC going too fast for GS aat first, but that was likely the case. She’d just found out that he was her crush/idol and next thing she knew he was pursuing her.
Interesting point:
I like how the ML makes the FL’s first hearing of his voice into their first meeting to widen the gap between them dating and their actual first meeting.
That’s true. He made it seem like they’d known each other for so long, that it was not rushing it to be seeing each other every available time he had now. Depending on each person’s perspective, some will say they are going too fast, some too slow… hopefully our OTP will find that they are going just right!!
MY CONJECTURE ABOUT MO QING CHENG WITH REGARDS TO GU SHENG
I didn’t read the novel hence this is my conjecture… and I just caught some trailers, one of which possibly supports the guess that he knew her by voice long ago but was not able to find her then. Also at that time, she might have been too young to be dating. Perhaps he’d been single for all the years, because he was searching for her through her voice. He had entered chat room after chat room, looking for her voice. So it was both an ‘accident’ (as he said) that he found her, and also destiny because he’d been putting effort into looking for her (Yes, I recall Ki Ho in Castaway Diva searching island after island for Mok Ha). This makes their ‘meeting’ doubly romantic.
When he found her, he didn’t know what to say or how to start befriending her, but her rave over the chicken in pork stomach dish got him giving her a recipe, as a way to start a conversation with her. At least he could always get back to chatting with her about food. It was serendipitous that they had much in common. He liked to cook and she was a foodie. They both loved to listen to voices, were involved in dubbing and in music, and had connections with those ‘circles’ as it’s called. Connections are a very important part of how individuals get on, and they had the right links. Finally it was GS’s friend Xiao Xing who connected her with The Perfect Voice Studio.
The serendipitous time that he found her, she was also old enough to date. The age impediment, out of the way, now they have to navigate the other possible hurdles like her hesitations, their families’ approval, and their own need to maintain confidentiality of their identities. The side stories of others trying to slot themselves in between them, of public opinion or the interference of friends will be secondary concerns.
We can look forward to a fun ride with lots of sweet romance, counterpoised against the romance of Zhou Zheng and Xiao Xing (ZZ and XX LOL).
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern, yes, there are many characters partially in the know about Gu Sheng and/or QQC and who could possibly cause a heap of trouble for either of them or both. I recall in dramas, they will give us a few episodes of angst with 1 character, then after what seems a resolution, the next few episodes of angst with the other character. LOL Then both get it as well… and then it’s time to wrap up with a happy ending.
I was saying in the Ep 1-6 thread: “I noticed that in these episodes, we are in the year 2021. I believe that means we will get a slice-of-life romance until 2023!!! I’m guessing we’ll have to go through 2 years of ups and downs with our couple who are just beginning to size each other up, so to speak.” That’s my guess… so there’s plenty of time and episodes to resolve all kinds of issues that are bound to arise. I trust that there’ll be character growth and that a mature, giving relationship will be the highlight.
I’ve always found it frustrating that drama characters do not tell each other important bits of information. I’ve taken it for granted that the script calls for one party to be in the dark and so for mistakes to be made to add conflict to the plot!
🙄😑
Fern
Hello, @GB. I had wondered about an earlier interest in GS’s voice by QQC. Could it be from back when she was in middle school and made the song that he heard in the first episode? We will see, I suppose. Someone said he may have listened to her earlier broadcasts with her club/group, but I wondered if it was from an even earlier date. Later on, when/if there are problems with fans, he can say that he fell for her voice years ago. In the Truth or Dare game, he said that it was he who likes her more – he understands that she is hesitant.
I’m surprised that QQC’s nosy friends also didn’t know about the photo post of him and GS.
Gosh, now every time someone gets sick in a drama, I automatically think ‘test for Covid’. ZZ will probably get ill and pass it to XX. I hope QQC doesn’t give it to her grandfather. Speaking of whom…
Do you think there will be a hospital crisis with Grandfather and it will involve QQC, either for better or worse? I roll my eyes now, but it would be a dramatic trope.
It’s interesting that QQC always wears a mask in the hospital corridors, even when other staff don’t. I wondered if it was for identity protection as well as for sanitary reasons?
Regarding clothing: the FL almost always wears white or cream coloured clothing. I think this is symbolic of her being like a blank slate. I wonder if the wardrobe department will give her more colour in later episodes as her confidence and experience grow? I thought it was cute that even while ill, QQC scolded GS about wearing a skirt in the winter. I wonder what he would think about the old British tradition of boys wearing knee pants throughout primary school?
Fern
Middle of the night thought: another reason that the FL still is uncomfortable about the ML could be that he is still too perfect in her mind? She said that them dating is like a dream. And he certainly presents a perfect, flawless figure. His face, his voice, his calm personality, his studio, his spotless very organised kitchen. It’s like he’s not quite human. I would be intimidated by a person like that – sort of the way that I’m intimidated by the thought of a white carpet in a living room with white sofas. 😅 Perhaps taking care of him while he’s sick will help?
Kate
Loving the whole sequence when he is ill and she is uncertainly navigating the rules of engagement and where things are in his flat and what needs etc etc
It is SO SO evocative of awkward new love. Brings back memories of similar situations in my own life.
Especially when there is an age and maturity difference.
I am finding this whole QQC at home with a fever quite charming!
The hair caught in the watch incident – I love the way the show is using accidents and crowded tubes and other circumstances to throw them together.
She seems to be experiencing her attraction for him especially in this care taking context.
What do you sleuthy observers think?
Kate
ps I know that ‘throw them together’ devices are super tropey – but they are so welcome in this couple’s emerging relationship!!
monmor
I have been noticing that imbibing liquids may be a symbolic motif– Drinking in the other person.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern
Someone said he may have listened to her earlier broadcasts with her club/group, but I wondered if it was from an even earlier date.
I need to watch the trailer of one of the episodes again… much later on we’ll get to see the backstory of how he fell for her voice. I recall that another person was playing or letting him hear the song sung by GS and they said there was no name of singer or songwriter., so there was no way to search for the person.
Yes, about GS’s family member(s) like granddad ending up in hospital under QQC’s care… I feel it is a distinct possibility. For one thing granddad likes that hospital.
I was surprised that QQC sounded so parental in telling GS not to wear a skirt in winter. I thought most girls would bristle at that. They’d surely wear tights and boots to protect their legs?
Yes, I did wonder about British schoolboys always wearing knee pants in school. They weren’t allowed to wear long pants even in winter!!!???
Fern
@monmor, they often seem to be drinking the same thing, even when not together, don’t they? In the 1st episode when they were simultaneously drinking orange juice at the tripe soup restaurant, for example. They both drink and eat things that won’t hurt their throats.
@Kate, did I miss the hair caught in watch? Which episode was that?
Stacy
By ep 12 I can see that Gu Sheng is more at ease with MQQ. I feel her motives for hiding their relationship differs depending on who they’re hiding it from…with her club friends, it’s to protect MQQ’s identity as QQC; with her family it’s probably more that she just doesn’t want them to know she’s dating just yet. I can understand that.
Bit of trivia, she only has the one cousin in the novel, the one that works at the store.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, I love the use of tropes and cliches in this Show too. We need to give our couple every little bit of help in getting to some skinship. I was soooo amused by how the voice practice where QQC said “Shengshengman, I love you. Do you love me?” had the girls practically hyperventilating, LOL. If just his voice can do this, imagine what his touch could do LOLOL.
Kate
@Fern,
Check out Ep 11, 4′ 15” onwards!
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Hi @Stacy!! Oh… only 1 cousin in the novel? So the drama has upped the ante by adding in 4-5 more big ‘brothers’ (likely cousins)???
Yes, you’re right. At every meeting with people who know her, GS has to come up with a different plausible reason why she’s hobnobbing with a man who’s not a relative. It was either to protect him or herself or both of them.
With the mini-mart girl fan of QQC, she had to hide the fact that the doctor is QQC because the fan would have gone beserk and leaked it. The fan would also have been very judgemental about her being the chosen girlfriend.
With her club mates, it was also to protect QQC, since he’d always hidden his identity.
With her dad, (and even with the relatives on the roof) she had to pretend that she did not even know him, or that he was a doctor LOL.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@MM, trust you to notice and interpret the repeated actions (drinking often) in some inspired way. It didn’t occur to me. LOL… perhaps?
@Fern also had an interpretation for GS often in white clothing… as if she’s a blank slate or inexperienced. Yes, perhaps her clothing colours will become more vibrant and colourful later.
Kate
@GB – yes!!!
I notice how close they are standing in Episode 11 because she keeps needing to check his temperature. They are in each other’s close personal space more and more!
Monmor
I still ha couple of episodes left to watch to catch up with the rest of you. So I have not read many of the above comments so that I do not spoil myself.
@GB I did want to comment About drinking liquids. I first noticed that as a previous poster did In the Early restaurant scene. I had not thought of it as both of them taking care of their throats. A little less abstract than my idea.😊
Monmor
@fern Was it you who made a comment earlier on one of the threads about Ailee?
I have a new favorite singer rapper who is extremely versatile. Also does o s t’s I think. TAN Jian Ci!
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@MM Tan Jian Ci is amazingly versatile. He can sing in Mandarin and Cantonese, and I heard him sing classical Chinese opera. He had special training in Latin dance but dances other kinds of styles too. And his acting has great range. One of those truly gifted artistes.
monmor
I seem to recall a point where he did sing in a chinese opera like sound in this show.
I am excited to check out what soundtracks he may have done.
MONMOR
The comment about white clothing made me think about.Park’s contract marriage. Someone says something about her being in mourning clothes.? Perhaps this thought belongs in a different thread.
Kate
This is nice from ‘Lost you Forever’ @Monmor
Kate
@GB,
On your point re QQC tending taking the advice too far…
I am not wild about QQC telling SS not to wear skirts in winter… there are times when he moves straight into paternal/older brother mode.
If I were her I might feel less adult than I needed to to be relating to him romantically. Especially if I were already a bit overawed.
I wonder if this is a cultural thing and is meant to be cutely protective?
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, that’s a thought… maybe more accepted culturally because she’s some 7-8 years younger than he is. He’s been in the industry for at least 10 years so he’s her senior there as well. On the whole, young will look up to the ‘elders’ and girls are more ‘in need of protection’. We see the attitudes of her guy cousins. They all want to do stuff for their only young, female relative.
Probably his advice about keeping warm is taken as thoughtfulness. At least we don’t see GS taking issue with it.
Kate
Anyone else laugh out loud at Episode 11, 21′ 04”6??
ML’s envious friend doing his version of QQC’s breathy tones as he thanks SS!
Fern
@Monmor, white was the traditional colour for mourning in Asia. I think with western influence it is gradually becoming less common but in Joseon times it would have been the norm. Now Asian brides often wear white gowns so it would be strange if it were still uniquely for mourning.
@Kate, yes someone telling me not to wear a skirt in winter would make me bristle -or just think they were out of touch with reality. I wore skirts probably 50% of days when I worked unless it was well below freezing. As you say with warm tights or boots it’s not such a problem.
My take was that she recognised his concern and also that he himself was ill and perhaps feeling less reticent. If he was hot with fever, her hands would also feel cold to him.
The episodes after 10 weren’t available this morning so I’m looking forward to catching up this evening.
Stacy
My perspective on the skirt issue is that he has the mindset of a doctor in these matters. Considering how he said it while he was sick himself, I took it as him naturally wanting to help her avoid getting sick herself.
I’ve seen the same issue in other dramas – sometimes it’s used to make the boyfriend appear manipulative and controlling (Fake It Till You Make It), but other times it’s used to make the boyfriend appear attentive and caring. How the audience interprets it is often informed by each person’s mindset around such things. Just my opinion anyway.
Fern
My comment from my phone disappeared.
When I saw the comment about a skirt in winter, I wondered if it was his high temperature that made her hands feel relatively hot to his if he was having chills. But also that he was concerned about her.
She didn’t seem to react to it. Personally I would either have bristled or thought the person was out of touch depending on their state. I think she was used to being protected.
@FERN I have still have not read all the comments carefully because i’m just going to start watching now. The word bristled came to mind when I noticed your comment about him telling her not to wear skirts and then I noticed you used the term as well.
Kate
@Fern – I loved Episode 11!
I am sure we all wanted more skinship…
BUT skinship in place of getting to know one another may not be the best thing.
I am a bit concerned – only mildy! – about their lack of banter.
But watching our ML at ease with his colleagues and friends I can also see how he is not looking for sparky repartee with his love interest.
‘I am a simple man’.
He seems to have fallen in love with her essence via her music and song.
Now the attraction needs to be filled out in day to day reality.
The ML is venturing forward in quiet trust that his attraction to her essence is true and leading him to his woman.
Kate
Watching this show makes me want to talk less!
Monmor
@kate Thank you for the music links.
Kate
@Monmor – you are most welcome!
Fern
Yes, when ZZ said that I knew exactly what you meant. 😄
Fern
Ref episodes 11 and 12, @Kate, I’m not worried about a lack of skinship at all, but they seem so . Episodes 11 and 12 were delightful, but like you, I wonder at their lack of small talk. Easy things like, Have you traveled? Were you born here? I think I may have seen your Grandfather, what is he like? Where does your mother get her recipes? How long have you had your dog? Where do you get your inspiration for your lyrics? What is your favourite part of town? Where is your favourite place to buy ingredients for cooking? What got you into dubbing and what is your preferred genre?
I do see that they are touching each other a bit more comfortably – riding the bike and walking along afterwards. After GS returned home, telling her cousins that the person near her was looking for his girlfriend – not a good line. If the cousins see them together later they will think QQC is a player.
I think motorcycle club girl may have figured it out, but she isn’t letting on.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, I went back to watch that part of Episode 11, 21:14… the thing that made me laugh was that QQC seemed to be deliberately showing off in front of Juemei that he has a girlfriend who’s taking care of him.
Suddenly we see his pettiness (when in the past we kept seeing his generosity when it came to food!!!) when he refuses to let Juemei’s chopsticks touch the tofu that GS had prepared. A real chopstick battle for first bite LOL. I’ve never seen a scene like that before. It was possessive-jealous-cute. 😂
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate… and LOL after that Juemei goes to get spoons but he does not even know where the spoons are in his own kitchen!!! But QQC refuses to tell him. He has to go search for them himself so that gives QQC a few moments alone with GS, during which he says Juemei will eat grass if that’s what she feeds him with.
QQC says he got sick and earned that meal. So Juemei should contain himself. Juemei calls him petty LOL.
Kate
@Fern – re small talk. Yes.
The only thing you are left with without that easy small talk is ‘date activities’ and kissing!
He isn’t a big talker and she is much more chatty when relaxed and enthusing about something or not on her guard.
I am hoping that her getting more relaxed will allow her to be the counterpoint to his not being into small talk.
That would help bridge the gap.
They do look at one another a lot. I like that the looks speak of where they want to get to in knowledge of one another and skinship.
All to play for.
I think they both have to stretch into that easy space of small talk.
He doesn’t like it when his flat mate is too chatty – shorthand for get out of the way while my girlfriend is here. But I think too he prefers a peaceful environment with nattering kept to a minimum.
In some ways he is having to unlearn what we describe as typical bachelor behaviours… he needs help to open up to this lovely girl.
She needs to be able to express herself more. His flatmate drew her out on the topic of unpleasant gossip about them. In fact, his flatmate is smarter EQ wise than he appeared at first. A kind person.
Kate
@GB – what fun to see our ML in the way you describe.
I loved this episode.
And the competition and jealous man pettiness… Lol.
I have to say that Chinese and Korean dramas both do a wonderful job of ‘comedifying’ male jealousy.
We see the ML in slightly surly batting horns mode …
As you say, flaunting the joys of having a girlfriend come and visit him when he is sick!
So much fun.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, I like how you put it… he fell in love with her essence. He didn’t need to know what she was like before he liked her. Also that he needs to fill out his attraction through day-to-day activity. That seems to be what this show is serving up. We are getting practically a slice-of-life romance in the blooming. Like a flower, each petal moves a fraction of a millimeter with every online and face-to-face interaction. We watch it unfold slowly, sure that the beauty of the flower will be worth the wait.
About small talk. I feel I’m pretty bad at it myself. I, too, prefer to be seated quietly, but when I have to, I will exert myself to find topics of conversation and ask questions to elicit more conversation. It’s something that some people seem to have the knack of doing, while it takes more effort on the part of others. I guess since our OTP have not had any practice at all in small talk with a ‘lover’, they are rather at a loss.
Probably they should be reminded that they start off as friends first and should just comfortably speak about anything on their minds, even if it’s to admit that they have nothing much to say! (I’m glad that QQC did admit this before, but he could have gone on a bit more). Then small talk for lovers will just automatically flow when they have more intimate things to say.
I am rewatching Ep 5 and feel that he suddenly started singing when on the bus, for the same reason, ie he didn’t know what to talk about but she’d just been praising his singing as beautiful, so he sang for her LOL. I feel a bit like a voyeur, watching them struggle to chit chat, while trying not to cringe for them. 😅😂
Fern
Good evening @GB and hello all. I like your idea that QQC fell in love with GS’s essence, he likes her looks, and now has to get to know the rest of her. She could have been a very different person so he is joyful. In a way it’s like an arranged marriage where all the couple see at first is an image, but it’s done so the rest of the learning of how to live together has to start.
Mao the sound engineer had a good analogy about meeting his wife. He had determined to like her regardless due to their compatibility online. But he was very nervous to meet her in person. When he finally saw her he was ‘ecstatic’. I feel that our OTP feel the same. I like that our ML is asking his friends for advice. He has now admitted therefore that he is in a relationship. He feels less suave and perfect now.
As regards the small talk, I sort of had to train myself to do it. Someone said that small talk is the lubrication to great conversations, so I was determined to not miss out. One of my teachers also said that good listening is a gift. I think our OTP are both good listeners, but to be a listener, there has to be another person speaking.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Good day @Fern!
Yes, I like that QQC is not made out to be perfect or confident in every way, but comes through as human and somewhat uncertain of himself at times.
LOL, yes, small talk requires a speaker and a listener, but we get two who can sing duets together and yet cannot engage in normal conversation LOL. What to do? Like on the bus, I expected QQC to break into song now and then LOL. I felt that was his way of filling up the gaps in conversation.
Speaking of which, I added comments in the first thread on 2 of the songs and their lyrics. A metaphor or two?
BTW I forgot to say in the first thread: I noticed we are in the year 2021. I believe that means we will get a slice-of-life romance until 2023!!! I’m guessing we’ll have to go through 2 years of ups and downs with our couple who are just beginning to size each other up, so to speak.
Fern
Hi @GB. I just saw your other comment. It’s true, there are couples who don’t need to speak much and I think this OTP are that way. They will find other ways to speak.
Another thing about QQC, do you see how he was ready to square up to GS’s father who came charging back to the queue at the moon cake shop? Thank goodness it wasn’t another situation like the pediatric patient parents, because QQC doesn’t shrink from a confrontation. He was ready to stand up for his relationship.
If we have until 2023, there may be some separation to make that song ring even truer.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Oooh @Fern, I must watch that scene again. I believe the thought did cross my mind that he would have ‘spoken up’ for the right to date GS, but as it was not necessary, I forgot to think more about it.
LOL I just watched it again Ep 12 (2:00) The music added tension to the long stare dad gave QQC … but it was only dad trying to remember QQC’s name.
I can’t help laughing at GS’s difficulty in spitting out the words of formal greeting to Dr Mo in front of her dad, after she’d been dating him the whole time 😂🤣
Fortunately both of them could put on an act for her dad.
Yes, QQC waited and already started calling her dad, ‘uncle’ as a polite form of greeting, ready to give an explanation.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Kate, I added a comment on the Episode 1-6 thread on the Song in the Bus that you gave some of the lyrics for. I loved that bus ride.
I like that QQC comes off as very human. I felt that Yang Yang in Love O2O was a mite too perfect.
Yes, to the comedy that Asian dramas seem to be able to derive from jealous boyfriends. They usually show their childish, insecure and petty sides when threatened with loss of girlfriend. I’m glad to say that QQC maintained most of his dignity although he became peevish over having to share GS’s first dish for him with his housemate. I’m glad he ‘won’ the chopstick battle! Or rather that Juemin gave in to him. 😂
Monmor
After thirty years my husband and I are still working on the art of small talk😄
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@MM LOLOL I think we prefer companionable silence to small talk. When we talk it is usually important stuff, like, did I notice he had his hair cut LOLOL.
Monmor
I need to set the stage for us to have some small talk. Cocktails work well😁 But nowadays only one cocktail disturbs my sleep
Monmor
@GB It can take me days to notice he Had a haircut.😄
monmor
Instrumental small talk of course is necessary, Such As “something beeped.”🤣
Fern
Haha. Married small talk is funny.
In the morning, my husband always asks if I slept well. I don’t know if it’s just his thing or if his family always said it. So I ask him as well. Then it’s each to his own coffee with a side of New Yorker magazine or emails, with the occasional, ‘What do you fancy for dinner tonight?’ The response is usually the typical Brit, ‘I don’t mind, what do you fancy?’ If we’re feeling really chatty we comment on the weather or the dogs. 🤣
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
LOL we married women are so funny!!!
@MM, my husband was quite put out when I never noticed that his hair was shorter. 🤣
@Fern what a nice way to say good morning!
It’s mostly only in the early dating/married days that much talking things through gets done. That said, however, good communication is quite necessary. It’s just that small talk does not quite fall into the category of really deep communication. 🤔
monmor
When my husband and I were first together. We would each relay the events of the day to the other in great detail.
So far this morning our conversation has been about the dishwasher.
Stacy
LOL…the exact opposite runs in my family. As in, we talk too much. I’m self-aware enough to know that it can take me 30 minutes to tell a 5 minute story. 😅
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
LOL @Stacy, at least you know to give yourself ample time to launch into any small talk!!!
Kate
I am laughing to myself about your various approaches to small talk! What fun!!
LOL
The female doctor is very good at small talk as she accosts our ML at the supermarket, eating with him in full view of jealous FL in Episode 12.
However, when a man does or does not want you, small talk it would seem makes no odds…
It doesn’t help of course that she is interrupting his brief tryst with the FL and that said doctor is rather rude about the cooked radishes.
He takes VERY little notice as she prattles on.
And then, female intruder doctor leaves and in place of small talk … the l o n g mutual g a z e (26’ 19’’ to 26’.59’’) as the ML and FL listen to ‘Dawn to Dusk.’ which pretty well tells him what he needs to know about how she is feeling.
Kate
I like the idea, @Fern, of them being in what resembles an arranged marriage.
We have 2 communities encouraging the couple along.
They meet through the ‘portrait’ created by their music and voices
He is the Prince she is the talented muse who lives near to the Palace!
As you said in the discussion of songs @GB – he has committed himself to this process from start.
We even get a casual mention of marriage from Dune (can’t remember his name) and FL splutters into her porridge.
For early daters – aside from the skinship – they are acting like a shy newly married couple in a modern arranged marriage.
I am rambling…
Kate
And in keeping with the communities within which they have encountered one another and through which the quasi-arranged marriage has taken place- they very soon meet and eat with both sides of ‘the family’.
All of this sits so well in the context of their love of (ancient?)Chinese culture.
She is so unworldly that she doesn’t seem fully to inhabit the modern world around her … expressing her true self through song and music is where she is able to meet the ML’s quest for connection. He has had women around him this whole time… but she meets him an entirely different level.
I am not persuaded of my own ramblings here… but always worth testing out an idea.
Fern
I’ve watched episode 14 now.
Oh, Dune (or ZZ) is one to talk. He doesn’t seem any more experienced than QQC and he is in a complete flap about GS’s room mate XX coming to the studio and then along with them to Yangshuo. But for certain he recognises how serious his housemate is about GS.
He’s another one who seems impossibly inexperienced given his looks. He’s not even suave like QQC!
I’m laughing about the scene with the cousins and the Grandfather. I think the Grandfather would be happy for GS to meet a good man and he is reassured that she is going with a friend. I would say, ‘little does he know…’ but I think he does know on some level. Remember, he has excellent hearing!
Stacy
Has anyone else noticed that Gu Sheng’s outfits often seem like modernized versions of historical clothing? I don’t have time atm to go back and pinpoint specifics, but I remember in an early episode she was wearing something dangling from her waist that reminded me of the jade tokens worn by officials or the wealthy in historical dramas. And her clothes often wrap and have embellishments that make me think of historical clothing. I don’t know if I’m explaining this well.
Fern
@Kate, even her pyjamas and dressing gown have traditional styled fastenings, as do some of her regular outfits. I was looking at how she and her mother were dressed at breakfast. The mother had a normal top, but GS wore a more traditional style, so even within her own family she’s rather old fashioned, which matches her interest in Chinoiserie verse and music.
Yes, the substitute families of the Perfect Voice studio personnel, the dorm room mates and the group/band/club studio have all been fed by QQC in GS’s presence. I wonder how it will go with the real families. I’m praying that there’s no feud between Grandfather and QQC’s parents, but rather that it will be a bridge between the families.
I wonder the reason that QQC doesn’t work at his parents’ hospital. A wish for independence? Or perhaps he feels less obligated to them because he was alone so often as a child.
Fern
Hi, Stacy. We posted about the same thing simultaneously! Yes, I’ve been noticing her clothes. While it seemed like a common thing during the New Years celebrations (that white bunny fur trim!), her friend with the new motorbike consistently wears modern clothes and GS very often wears the older style even on regular days.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Stacy, @Fern, @Kate, I’ve been loving all of GS’s outfits. Seeing her in modernised traditional dress makes me keep thinking that this Show is promoting the culture quite effectively. And as I enjoy the beautiful city and later Guilin scenes, it’s an effective tourism promoter as well!
I must say that after the governmental questioning on why cdramas could not perform as well as kdramas, the industry has revamped a lot of their production values and now even surpasses kdramas from time to time.
I feel this Show is meant to be a showpiece as well, showcasing music, culture and the country.
Fern
@GrowingBeautifully, I agree that this drama is a showcase. I believe that today’s episodes set in Guilin will make us all want to visit and to eat the local delicacies. Hands up if you googled Guilin or Yangsuo.😁
Being a bit cynical as well, I have noticed how very much PP there is – the yogurt drinks initially small and getting larger, the snacks from the shops, the snacks on the coffee table at QQC’s flat, the electric motorbikes and more. I guess it helps to fund the production and improve the values.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Fern, yup, the PPL is strong in this show, however at least woven into daily life so that they don’t stand out like sore thumbs.
I’m rewatching the Guilin part of Ep 14 now. Perhaps they will give us longer shots of the countryside in future episodes. We only got a quick pan across the mountainous peaks with karst formation and a glimpse of the famous Elephant Trunk Hill.
Kate
@Fern, @GB and @Stacey,
Enjoying this discussion of FL’s outfits and the way they distinguish her as a character within the story!
Yes, the promotional flavour of the show was in place from the outset and has been done well, I think. It gives a particular vibe and creates lots of lovely sound textures and colours. Again, they chose a lovely palette for the show and this is constantly being used to the benefit of the show.
Unlike the slightly distracting PP – it has been well done and integrated into their special story.
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
@Stacy, @Grace and anyone who knows Chinese… does Shengshengman translate to something like “slow voice”?
Just watching ep. 15 now and my gosh, it’s so so wonderful. is beautiful!
Fern
(Everything)
Kate
EXCITING @Fern – looking forward.
In the meantime, I love the pale green suit worn by the FL at the start of Episode 13. We need to find out who designed her gear.
Some of the outfits work better than others. This is lovely and fresh with pretty detailing. I also liked her in the winter white outfit with the fur!
Fern
@Kate, yes the pale green looked very good on the FL. I didn’t love the checked print outfit worn during her visit to QQC’s sickbed so well. It looked too schoolgirl-ish.
Does anyone know which city they live in? Is it supposed to be an area in or near Beijing? It would make sense that they will change to summery clothing when the group travels south to Guilin in the 14-17th episodes.
monmor
@fern kate GB Our conversation this morning was about the dishwasher again🤣
I am immersed in Tian Jian Xi’s singing. It has a very comforting feeling.
Stacy
Regarding PPL: I notice it, but I appreciate how well it’s woven into the scenes and dialogue. Much better than the close-ups and obvious recitation of facts that typically happens, especially in Kdramas.
Regarding cultural promotion: I love it in a drama when it’s done right. Meet Yourself did it right and so far LMLMV is doing it right. Kdramas do it right when it comes to food lol.
Clothing: I would love to have outfits similar to the ones Gu Sheng wears. I can barely sew a straight line, but if I could find patterns I think I might be willing to try…then again, I doubt I’d be able to find patterns that fit me, considering I’m 6′ tall 😅
“Shengshengman” – according to the translator of the novel, it means a slow, drawn out sound or voice. I know this is from ep 6, but does anyone know if the snippet of song that was played in QQC’s weibo post about walking a girl to university is part of the OST? The tune sounds familiar.
Kate
@Monmor….. lol!
GrowingBeautifully (GB)
Thanks @Stacy!! You’ve answered the question.
@MM, you have an interesting dishwasher LOL.
Kate
@Fern – that checked skirt is far too school girly… and emphasizes the age gap in the wrong way!
Another outfit is a bit matronly… possibly the one she met the first time… showing up wearing a cardi’ !!
Some of them, though, do work.
She is a lovely looking young woman so can carry off most looks.
Kate
@Stacey – if you ever manage to pull off creating or sewing one of those outfits – I’d be so interested!
Along with all the other stuff you are currently doing …haha!
It isn’t a look that would work on me at all. I think having slim figure allows her to carry off detail that would look fussy and/bulky on me.
Kate
@Fern – Zhou Ye plays the piano but is tone deaf… cute
@Kate, the cardi and ankle socks that she is wearing when they first meet face to face – yes, it was dowdy looking. I think in RL, the baggy cardigans and ankle socks are hip these days. It just wasn’t a good choice. OR the wardrobe dept. deliberately wanted her to look like an unsophisticated/regular student.
My daughter bought me one of the big cardigans last winter. I love it, but since I’m not what one would call willowy, it doesn’t look chic on me. Daughter thinks I look on trend – that’s all that matters sometimes.
Fern
Oh, she is a bit tone deaf. A pity because the quality of her voice is otherwise pretty.
monmor
@kate
I am enjoying “gank your heart” So far I think the drama is doing a good job of the characterization of the main lead and is weaving a tight plot. This had been on my to watchlist but I guess I had watched several Esports dramas so I passed on this one. I am glad now that kate has drawn my attention back to it.
When I click on bitchesoverdramas.com on my ipad i get a slew of p*rn words!!
monmor
I am totally confused about what you are saying.
monmor
I am totally confused about what you are saying.
If others see this exchange please let me know if you have any thoughts about what is going on. I am wondering if it is even pack meal this is coming from.
If @Kate and I are the only ones experiencing this problem, then it’s not sitewide yet.
monmor
Glad it is not just me. I hope this is not a serious problem though for anyone.I practice very safe internet use. I was just about to send you a direct email about this. If there is anything, I should be careful about at my end. Please let me know.
The only thing I know about you is that you don’t like mister smarmy dimples. I do not like him at all. I do like mister dimples ganglord though.
Thanks @pkml3!
Aaaahh… the way he looks at her and smiles. 😍🥰😋
I loved Episode 8!!! And wow TJC’s voice acting the different emotions with the same lines was amazing!
SPOILER for EPISODE 8
SO DELISH
SPOILER
I just had to rewatch Episode 8’s sweet-simple-in between frying fish ‘confession’…. Could there be anything cuter? A cook-cute-confession LOLOL. What better confession for our Recipe Couple!
I loved the confession! Love how he started then paused, which I read as being a bit nervous. I like how MQQ comes across smooth and experienced at times, then other times his lack of experience shows. I also adore how he’s not embarrassed to show her or allow others to see his feelings for her.
I have just noticed that the director Sha Wei Qi also directed ‘Gank Your Heart’ starring Wang Yibo; and coming of age drama ‘A River Runs Through It’ both of which I enjoyed.
@Fern, true what you and @Kate say… I didn’t feel that it was QQC going too fast for GS aat first, but that was likely the case. She’d just found out that he was her crush/idol and next thing she knew he was pursuing her.
Interesting point:
🙄😑
Middle of the night thought: another reason that the FL still is uncomfortable about the ML could be that he is still too perfect in her mind? She said that them dating is like a dream. And he certainly presents a perfect, flawless figure. His face, his voice, his calm personality, his studio, his spotless very organised kitchen. It’s like he’s not quite human. I would be intimidated by a person like that – sort of the way that I’m intimidated by the thought of a white carpet in a living room with white sofas. 😅 Perhaps taking care of him while he’s sick will help?
Loving the whole sequence when he is ill and she is uncertainly navigating the rules of engagement and where things are in his flat and what needs etc etc
It is SO SO evocative of awkward new love. Brings back memories of similar situations in my own life.
Especially when there is an age and maturity difference.
I am finding this whole QQC at home with a fever quite charming!
The hair caught in the watch incident – I love the way the show is using accidents and crowded tubes and other circumstances to throw them together.
She seems to be experiencing her attraction for him especially in this care taking context.
What do you sleuthy observers think?
ps I know that ‘throw them together’ devices are super tropey – but they are so welcome in this couple’s emerging relationship!!
I have been noticing that imbibing liquids may be a symbolic motif– Drinking in the other person.
@Fern
@monmor, they often seem to be drinking the same thing, even when not together, don’t they? In the 1st episode when they were simultaneously drinking orange juice at the tripe soup restaurant, for example. They both drink and eat things that won’t hurt their throats.
@Kate, did I miss the hair caught in watch? Which episode was that?
By ep 12 I can see that Gu Sheng is more at ease with MQQ. I feel her motives for hiding their relationship differs depending on who they’re hiding it from…with her club friends, it’s to protect MQQ’s identity as QQC; with her family it’s probably more that she just doesn’t want them to know she’s dating just yet. I can understand that.
Bit of trivia, she only has the one cousin in the novel, the one that works at the store.
@Fern,
Check out Ep 11, 4′ 15” onwards!
@GB – yes!!!
I notice how close they are standing in Episode 11 because she keeps needing to check his temperature. They are in each other’s close personal space more and more!
@fern Was it you who made a comment earlier on one of the threads about Ailee?
I have a new favorite singer rapper who is extremely versatile. Also does o s t’s I think. TAN Jian Ci!
@MM Tan Jian Ci is amazingly versatile. He can sing in Mandarin and Cantonese, and I heard him sing classical Chinese opera. He had special training in Latin dance but dances other kinds of styles too. And his acting has great range. One of those truly gifted artistes.
I seem to recall a point where he did sing in a chinese opera like sound in this show.
I am excited to check out what soundtracks he may have done.
The comment about white clothing made me think about.Park’s contract marriage. Someone says something about her being in mourning clothes.? Perhaps this thought belongs in a different thread.
This is nice from ‘Lost you Forever’ @Monmor
@GB,
On your point re QQC tending taking the advice too far…
I am not wild about QQC telling SS not to wear skirts in winter… there are times when he moves straight into paternal/older brother mode.
If I were her I might feel less adult than I needed to to be relating to him romantically. Especially if I were already a bit overawed.
I wonder if this is a cultural thing and is meant to be cutely protective?
@Kate, that’s a thought… maybe more accepted culturally because she’s some 7-8 years younger than he is. He’s been in the industry for at least 10 years so he’s her senior there as well. On the whole, young will look up to the ‘elders’ and girls are more ‘in need of protection’. We see the attitudes of her guy cousins. They all want to do stuff for their only young, female relative.
Probably his advice about keeping warm is taken as thoughtfulness. At least we don’t see GS taking issue with it.
Anyone else laugh out loud at Episode 11, 21′ 04”6??
ML’s envious friend doing his version of QQC’s breathy tones as he thanks SS!
Off to watch the episodes after 10.

@FERN I have still have not read all the comments carefully because i’m just going to start watching now. The word bristled came to mind when I noticed your comment about him telling her not to wear skirts and then I noticed you used the term as well.
@Fern – I loved Episode 11!
Watching this show makes me want to talk less!
@kate Thank you for the music links.
@Monmor – you are most welcome!
Yes, when ZZ said that I knew exactly what you meant. 😄
A metaphor or two?
https://bitchesoverdramas.com/2023/12/02/love-me-love-my-voice-open-thread/#comment-111017
BTW I forgot to say in the first thread: I noticed we are in the year 2021. I believe that means we will get a slice-of-life romance until 2023!!! I’m guessing we’ll have to go through 2 years of ups and downs with our couple who are just beginning to size each other up, so to speak.
After thirty years my husband and I are still working on the art of small talk😄
@MM LOLOL I think we prefer companionable silence to small talk. When we talk it is usually important stuff, like, did I notice he had his hair cut LOLOL.
I need to set the stage for us to have some small talk. Cocktails work well😁 But nowadays only one cocktail disturbs my sleep
@GB It can take me days to notice he Had a haircut.😄
Instrumental small talk of course is necessary, Such As “something beeped.”🤣
When my husband and I were first together. We would each relay the events of the day to the other in great detail.
So far this morning our conversation has been about the dishwasher.
LOL…the exact opposite runs in my family. As in, we talk too much. I’m self-aware enough to know that it can take me 30 minutes to tell a 5 minute story. 😅
LOL @Stacy, at least you know to give yourself ample time to launch into any small talk!!!
And in keeping with the communities within which they have encountered one another and through which the quasi-arranged marriage has taken place- they very soon meet and eat with both sides of ‘the family’.
All of this sits so well in the context of their love of (ancient?)Chinese culture.
She is so unworldly that she doesn’t seem fully to inhabit the modern world around her … expressing her true self through song and music is where she is able to meet the ML’s quest for connection. He has had women around him this whole time… but she meets him an entirely different level.
I am not persuaded of my own ramblings here… but always worth testing out an idea.
Hi, Stacy. We posted about the same thing simultaneously! Yes, I’ve been noticing her clothes. While it seemed like a common thing during the New Years celebrations (that white bunny fur trim!), her friend with the new motorbike consistently wears modern clothes and GS very often wears the older style even on regular days.
@Fern, @GB and @Stacey,
Enjoying this discussion of FL’s outfits and the way they distinguish her as a character within the story!
@Stacy, @Grace and anyone who knows Chinese… does Shengshengman translate to something like “slow voice”?
There is a poem by 李清照 Li Qingzhao: 聲聲慢 Sheng Sheng Man — [*尋尋覓覓] [*O search, I search and seek, I seek]. I guess this was the poem that was mentioned in the Show.
(Taken from https://chinesepoemsinenglish.blogspot.com/2018/12/li-qingzhao-sheng-sheng-man-1-o-search.html)
Just watching ep. 15 now and my gosh, it’s so so wonderful. is beautiful!
(Everything)
EXCITING @Fern – looking forward.
In the meantime, I love the pale green suit worn by the FL at the start of Episode 13. We need to find out who designed her gear.
Some of the outfits work better than others. This is lovely and fresh with pretty detailing. I also liked her in the winter white outfit with the fur!
@fern kate GB Our conversation this morning was about the dishwasher again🤣
I am immersed in Tian Jian Xi’s singing. It has a very comforting feeling.
@Monmor….. lol!
Thanks @Stacy!! You’ve answered the question.
@MM, you have an interesting dishwasher LOL.
@Fern – Zhou Ye plays the piano but is tone deaf… cute
https://weibo.com/6741964788/NwdE3jnEC
@Kate, the cardi and ankle socks that she is wearing when they first meet face to face – yes, it was dowdy looking. I think in RL, the baggy cardigans and ankle socks are hip these days. It just wasn’t a good choice. OR the wardrobe dept. deliberately wanted her to look like an unsophisticated/regular student.
My daughter bought me one of the big cardigans last winter. I love it, but since I’m not what one would call willowy, it doesn’t look chic on me. Daughter thinks I look on trend – that’s all that matters sometimes.
Oh, she is a bit tone deaf. A pity because the quality of her voice is otherwise pretty.
@kate
I am enjoying “gank your heart” So far I think the drama is doing a good job of the characterization of the main lead and is weaving a tight plot. This had been on my to watchlist but I guess I had watched several Esports dramas so I passed on this one. I am glad now that kate has drawn my attention back to it.
@monmor,
How can you access this site??
I’m getting p*rn garbage when I try to access it on my ipad?
pm3
I don’t understand what you’re talking about? What site?
This blog.
When I click on bitchesoverdramas.com on my ipad i get a slew of p*rn words!!
I am totally confused about what you are saying.
I am totally confused about what you are saying.
If others see this exchange please let me know if you have any thoughts about what is going on. I am wondering if it is even pack meal this is coming from.
Lol. It is me, packmule3. @Kate is also experiencing the same problem. She just emailed me offsite.
BTW, how do you know that it’s me?
I have 2 sons. @agdr03 is my longtime friend. We met at soompi during the “Warm and Cozy” kdrama showing in 2015. I dislike Mr. Smarmy Dimples.
Never mind.
If @Kate and I are the only ones experiencing this problem, then it’s not sitewide yet.
