Bitch Talk: On Leading Actors for 2024, part 2

Last week I made a list of actors I didn’t want to watch in 2024. Part 1 is here: Bitch Talk: On Leading Actors for 2024

This week, I made a list of actors I want to see more of in 2024. The list is in random order.

1. Rowoon

I bet you never expected that from me since I regularly pan his acting. But “The Matchmakers” won me over. Being the skeptic that I am, I want to see if his performance in said kdrama was a fluke or not.

#ro woon from Love yourself.#ro woon from Love yourself.source: leedongwook’s tumblr

Park Hyung Sik is another idol-turned-actor I’m eager to see this year. Saturday can’t come fast enough.

I hope his “Doctor Slump” (co-starring Park Shin Hye) is worth the wait, and the hype.

2. Lee Jun Ho

Because I need something to clean out that load of tripe the “King the Land” dumped in my mental reservoir.

#king the land from Eylem#king the land from Eylem#king the land from Eylem#king the land from Eylem#king the land from Eylem#king the land from Eylemsource: mezbeleyer’s tumblr

I blame it all on his costar, Im Yoona. Her acting was so stage-y and affected like she was simpering for her fans at a fanmeet.

Same with Song Kang. I’d like to watch him in another kdrama to expunge “My Demon” from my memories.

3. Ahn Hyo Seop

His upcoming movie with Lee Min Ho, called “Omniscient Reader” doesn’t count. I want him in a leading role again in a kdrama, preferably romcom.

I guess I can watch “A Time Called You” and kill two birds with one stone. Both AHS and Rowoon are on it.

Of course, I can’t write about this Canadian without mentioning the OTHER actors with Canadian ties:

a. Na In Woo

He’s in “Marry My Husband.” I hope he’ll have another hit drama this year.

Oh! Before you swim off to the Shallow Island for Na In Woo, I want you to watch these two short clips from 2D1N.

His skills in table tennis were on display here. His team won only because the other team kept getting their points taken off as a penalty for speaking English.

And this clip showed him following the leaders/veterans of the show without knowing why. I don’t think his accident was scripted.

He’s such a good-natured and clumsy guy.

b. Choi Woo Shik

I like this actor because he’s a minimalist.

#our beloved summer from i'm 100% that bitch#our beloved summer from i'm 100% that bitchsource: cuddlybitch’s tumblr

Do you see what he did there, right? In both scenarios, he showed that he liked her without doing much.

I like that he can project a sensitive, emotional guy without making exaggerated body movement or facial mannerisms. He doesn’t need to ham thing up. And when he does that, his character comes out as a more cerebral, introspective and thinking person.

You’ll understand better what I mean when you look at those Ok Taec Yeon gifs I posted on the other thread.

But it seems like the drama deities are listening to me. He has “A Killer Paradox” starting on February 9 on Netflix. Co-starring Son SeokGyu (“My Liberation Notes”).

Also “Melo Movie,” a kdrama written by the same screenwriter who created “Our Beloved Summer.” Lol. Mr. Choi must be her muse.

4. Kim Min Jae

I find his voice sexier than his face.

#kim min jae from only love is not fate#kim min jae from only love is not fatesource: xiaolanhua’s tumblr

I don’t care if his face isn’t symmetrical; I just want to listen to him speak.

And speaking of voices, the other actor I would like to see hear in a romcom this year is Yeo Jin Goo.

#yeo jin goo from moonlight;

Although his looks seem to match melodramas, sageuks, and detective films better, I hope he gets a good romcom project this year. His drama picks have been too serious of late.

5. Kim Soo Hyun

Who hurt you, kiddo?

His last notable drama was “Psycho but It’s Okay” (2020). Crossing my fingers that he’d pick one interesting kdrama this year.

6. Lee Jong Suk

Same with this actor. What’s going on with him, too?

#lee jong suk from ★source: 1liv’s tumblr

I’m missing those winky-winks. He does them very prettily. They’re perfect when juxtaposed to Mr. Bean’s winks.

Wink Gif - IceGif

Anyway…

LJS used to pick good projects: “I Can Hear Your Voice” (2013), “Pinocchio” (2014), “W” (2016), “While You Were Sleeping” (2017) and then… it ended. I don’t know what happened.

No, don’t convince me that noona kdrama, “Romance Is a Bonus Book” was a good one. If the drama were a real book, it would be a wallbanger.

7. Seo In Guk

Seo In Guk is a perennial favorite of this blog. But please, I don’t want him playing death anymore. Does he have a death wish or something?

#death's game from boys be ambitioussource: koreandragon’s tumblr

8. Park BoGum

Okay, let’s try this again, BoGummy.

I liked him in “Reply 1988” but he was so-so in “Love in the Moonlight,” totally unwatchable in that noona romance “Encounter,” and weirdly effete in “Record of Youth.”

I want him playing a tough, rugged, alpha male in a drama this year. I don’t care if he shows me “toxic masculinity” like Heath Ledger’s in “Ten Things I Hate About You.”

Heath Ledger GIF

I just want him to break lose from this goody-two-shoes image he has.

Chae Jong Hyeop (“Castaway Diva”) is another cutie-patootie I want to see this year.

#kdramaedit from a clear sound, a shining voicesource: chaeyoojung’s tumblr

BTW, a note on Mr. Chae’s military service:

As Chae Jong Hyeop is now quickly approaching his thirties, the actor spoke candidly about enlisting in the military. He revealed that he has been diagnosed with epilepsy and has been approved to fulfill his military duties as a Wartime Labor Service Agent. This corresponds to Grade 5 in the Military Manpower Administration’s physical examination, where Grades 1-3 are qualified for active service. Chae Jong Hyeop stated that he first experienced symptoms of epilepsy when he was studying abroad and was officially diagnosed in 2018.

He shared, “There were a few times when I’d collapse while foaming at the mouth. When I got my physical examination [to enlist], I received a Grade 4 [meaning he is unfit for active duty], but if you don’t enlist within four years, you have to take another test. The military is a sensitive topic. That’s why I also wanted to be fully recovered but my reexamination date was decided so I got an electroencephalography [EEG] and they said I had epilepsy. I’m still taking medication now.”

Now that Chae Jong Hyeop is five years into his debut, he commented, “I know I’m lacking because I got here too quickly. That’s why I’m working that much harder.” He continued, “I am working tenaciously and diligently. I do not think of myself as the main character. I’ve just taken on the role of a character. Of course I know that I must take responsibility, but my desire to create along with all the actors and staff is greater.”

9. Gong Yoo

A girl can dream, right?

공유 윙크 GIF - 공유 윙크 애교 GIFs

“Coffee Prince” was a hit in 2007.
“Big” was filmed in 2012 (I read that this was what turned him off creating from kdramas. Gee, thanks, Hong sisters!)
“Goblin” was THE blockbuster 2016.

And that’s about it…unless I count the movie, “Train in Busan” also in 2016.

I want him to be in kdrama this year. I’ve seen actors like Song Kang, Lee Jun Ho, and Seo In Gook give stellar performances during emotional scenes. That’s their forte. They cry well. They express angst well. They project grief well.

But to me, only Gong Yoo can demonstrate how a man COPES stoically with extreme emotion. He delivers strong feelings despite an economy of facial expressions, and words.

And speaking of stoicism, here are the other ahjussis I like to see in kdramas.

a. Son Seok Gyu

I don’t want to see him in another gangster role, to be honest. Although I get why he’s typecast as a bad boy/rebel/thug (he’s a charismatic and intense actor), I want him to see him cleaned up, clean-shaven, clean-cut and in a romcom.

the whole world shimmers" — Son Seok Koo as Mr. Gu in My ...

b. Han Seok Kyu

Or that Dr. Romantic actor. He’s another minimalist actor I want to see this year. This year, minimalism in my kdrama is my antidote to all the unhinged theatrics in Washington DC.

sonder — I thought it was a party for the artificial heart...

Come on, kdrama screenwriters, don’t be age-ists! Can’t we have a romance for senior citizens?

10. Last but not least, Lee JaeWook

Now, there’s nothing minimalist about this guy, but I like him. Because he can demonstrate a wide range of emotions, he’s simply mesmerizing to watch on the small screen. I never get tired of his face. Although I don’t find him a beauty, I could watch him for hours. I couldn’t do that with Cha Eun Woo.

Also, I wouldn’t mind watching him with his co-star Go Yoon Jung again.

Unlike the cloying couple scenes in “King the Land” and “My Demon,” which lost their verisimilitude halfway through the plot, I wish there were more romantic scenes for Uk and Naksu in “Alchemy of Souls: Season 2.”

That’s it for me.

Who’s on your list?

16 Comments On “Bitch Talk: On Leading Actors for 2024, part 2”

  1. @packmule3, thank you for this list.

Yoo Teo is on my mind a lot these days. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him. I like all of your choices.

Son Seok Gu was funny in Be Melodramatic/Melo Is My Nature. He played an awkward kind of guy and yes, I would like to see him in more of that sort of role. I like his acting style.

Do Kyung Soo would be nice to see too.

Heck, maybe we could find a way to get Kenny Song acting. He’s fun to watch.

  2. Time to rewatch Alchemy of Souls Part 2!

  3. Tell me when. I can join you this weekend. 😂😂

  4. Such a great list! @Fern I agree about Yoo Teo. Kim Dae-Young would be on my list – I find him highly watchable even with mediocre material. And I enjoyed Kiss Sixth Sense so much that I would like to see Yoon Kye Sang in another romance. Apparently he thought he was too old for such a role – but I disagree!

  5. empress new clothes

Who I wanna see more of / missed seeing:

    (i) Lee Jong Suk & Kim Soo Hyun — iconic

(ii) Yeo Jin Goo — one of my fav actors (SO good in The Crowned Clown); last good outing was in Link (utterly underrated though). I want to see him in a good sageuk (again), and finally be successful in a romcom with convincing screen chemistry

(iii) Rowoon / Song Kang: I don’t understand the fuss over their good looks, and worse, how critics negate their acting talents because of their good looks. Both carry a natural screen aura, and they really shine when they pick the right projects. I love The Matchmakers, but to me his real breakout performance was in Destined with You (also 2023) — his comic timing was impeccable!

(iv) So Ji Sub: He was so good in The Master’s Sun with equal parts of prickly grouch and tragic pathos (his best I think. 2013 – a decade ago!). I wish to see him return to form in a saguek or wacky comedy

    (v) Ji Sung: well, very few leading men do intense theatrics as well as Ji Sung (with eyeliner). I don’t get all the raves over Adamas (2022), but he was smoking in Devil’s Judge (2021). I would like to see him do something similar to, or surpassing his cult hit Heal Me Kill Me (2015) where he played 7 characters as a DID person.

  6. empress new clothes

I forgot – my two Jae Wooks (Lee Jae Wook & Kim Jae Wook) — both are intense and talented actors whom I like a lot.

and they are returning to our screen (together!) for Hong Rang / Tangeum on Netflix soon. A saguek.

  7. Thank you for the list @packmule! I like 85% on this list. I was surprised that you also like those actors, performance wise at least.

  8. 😂Who did you have your list, @Eureka?

  9. *correction Kim Young-Dae – I transposed his given name.

  10. Annyeong ~

I like your list @PM3 – i have no objections to all of the above

i think Kim Min Jae and Yeo Jin Goo kind’a looks alike to me. Not too much. But sometimes, I get them confused haha. i like them both, for sure.

i agree, i think we need a “senior” romance haha. I would watch Han Seok Kyu in a rom-show.

  11. Yes please to more Song Kang! He clearly has more range than My Demon’s script allowed but at least he got to show us his tango!

Ahn Hyo-Seop was on my 2023 list, but only because he was so good with Kim Sejeong in A Business Proposal. Couldn’t quite get into Dr Romantic or A Time with you.

Loved Yeo Jin Goo in Hotel del luna – must give the Crowned Clown a go. I agree Lee Jaewook is compelling to watch too, although not classically good looking.

I’m afraid King The Land has ruined Lee Jun Ho for me so it’ll take a really good script to change my mind!

  12. YEs to all on your list!
Though there seems to be more than 10…18 actually 😛

    2. Lee Jun Ho was iconic in Red Sleeve that I loved…and like many King the Land was underwhelming.
On SongKang I should watch Sweet Home one day because I think he protrays a very different character there that really expands his acting chops?

3b. Choi Woo Shik!! I definitely loved his performance in Our Beloved Summer and he starred in quite a large range of dramas/movies. It’s interesting, the type of shows he is in.

He gets into various interesting shows like In The Room (an erotic drama film by Eric Khoo :O ..and it’s a Singaporean show!) and Okja (which is on Netflix but his role there is really small).

    On 6. Lee Jong Suk
His last was Big Mouth but I didn’t like that genre and just couldn’t bring myself to watch it. It seems that he has gone to start businesses…his own agency or production company?

    10. Yes! Lee JaeWook…he has 2 dramas coming out so…looking forward!

  13. Hi everyone! @packmule3 maybe I can only think of Park Seo Joon to be added on that list. He can deliver just like what he did in Itaewon Class, Hwarang, etc. I like most on your list. I am happy that you put those names.

  14. Kim Min Jae is doing his military service https://www.soompi.com/article/1623491wpp/kim-min-jae-completes-basic-training-with-exemplary-conduct-joins-the-military-band#:~:text=Kim%20Min%20Jae%2C%20who%20enlisted,solider%20in%20the%20military%20band. So unlikely to see him in anything in 2024. Hopefully he will be back in Kdrama land in 2025, even fitter than before. I think he is my favorite actor at the moment. It’s fascinating to me, because I know if I met him IRL- he just isn’t my type. But he has a wonderful screen presence, as well as the voice. I find him mesmerising to watch.
I agree that Yeo Jin-goo has a very similar vibe
I’d love to see more Lee Seung-Gi.

  15. Am I the only one who would like to see Hyun Bin again? I know he’s done more action thriller stuff lately and is more likely to be in films. But I really liked him in CLOY.

  16. Old American Lady (OAL)

Choi Woo Shik and Ahn Hyo Seop are fluent English speakers having lived I think, in Canada. I have heard them speak fairly in accented English. Vi would love to see them in some international movie where they are not given a few lines, but some meat, to watch them act in another language. I think I’d like to hear Gong Hyo Gin in English too. Would she sound like an Aussie, as she lived in Brisbane. And same for Moon Ga-young who speaks English, lived in Germany l, so does she speak English with a clipped German accent. I think that Koreans haven’t always remained in the countries where they emigrated, especially during the financial crisis. Another interesting actress who ended up back in S. Korea after growing up in the US +on Staten Island-and the product of the NYC Public School System graduating from LaGuardia HS (the big performing arts school) is Kim Yungun of List. I think she isn’t acting regularly because she married a chaebol. The funny thing about List is I believe Daniel Dae Kim had to be taught Korean(that actor is one handsome man). But this reminds me that the South Korean entertainment industry has a very deep bench(to use a sports term) when it comes to the breadth if it’s acting talent. And thank you K Drama world for providing endless amounts of pleasure. Just please treat your talent well.
