Happy Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

I made a bingo card with kdrama tropes. Everything should be easy to find. The middle grid is a bit tricky because  some of you may have not heard of the word before. πŸ™‚

I want you to learn this word because it’s topical for Valentine’s day and for us, kdrama viewers. It’s mamihlapinatapai which means “A look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something they both desire, but which neither wants to begin.” (source: linkedin)

It’ll be easier to memorize if you group the syllables into three parts:

Mamih
lapina
tapai

A picture is worth a thousand words so here’s how it looks like.

It isn’t at all difficult to find mamihlapinatapai in kdramas.

Good luck and have fun playing kdrama trope bingo! I wonder who’ll be the first to find them all. @GB?? @Cleopatra? or @Welmaris?

  1. Happy ❀️’s Day!!!

I can’t remember the last time I played bingo but the first horizontal line across reminds me of A Business Proposal. 😁

  2. Haha! Does it?

    You’re up early, @agdr03!

  3. It’s 10:06am here and I’m waiting for my paperwork. πŸ˜ƒ

Well Tae-moo spoke English when he was promoting their food in the USA. They shared a yellow umbrella on one of their dates. Ha-ri was drunk at the playground but Tae-moo made sure her brother took her home.

The expert kissing technique is the one I’m not sure of but their first kiss was exactly like the painting on one of the office walls. πŸ˜€

I’m trying to remember of she fell into his arms. πŸ€”

  4. Wow. You have a great memory, @agdr03!

She almost fell down the stairs but he grabbed her, in Ep 1. She didn’t fall into his arms though.

Then in Ep 2 (or was 3?) they hid from her brother and she landed on top of him.
    That works.

  5. Ah! I thought about that scene too where she almost fell from the stairs but he pulled her arm. πŸ₯° I think he asked her to date him then. 😁

Oh yeah! That scene where their lips accidentally touched in front of her house. πŸ˜ƒ

Thanks @pkml3! I’ve a terrible memory once a Show has been watched (hence the need to rewatch!). So many tropes here bring in images of scenes but they don’t all belong to the same show, so I’m hopeless at this Bingo!

What I can say is that our current Snowstorm has soooo much mamihlapinatapai. πŸ˜€

  7. The tropes don’t all have to be from the same show. I was amazed that @agdr03 found all in one show. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Yes, I saw that gifs from Snowstorm that had a mamihlapinatapai. The couple was standing by the doorway. πŸ˜‚

  8. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Heh @pkml3, if the trope don’t need to be in the same Show then instead of playing Bingo, I’ll do it the opposite way. I’ll choose Shows whose tropes I can recall more of, and see whether I can find at least 5 of those tropes on the Bingo Board!

Trying to recall from kdramaland at least Doctor Slump is recent enough to have more in my memory …
    1) Childhood connection.
    2) Wrist Grab.
    3) Korean BBQ. (Family ate it but the couple have ice-creams together)
    4) Hiding together in school.
    5) Likely the sidekicks will fall in love.
    6) Road trip together once to see the sunrise and one time he met her and they stayed overnight away from home.
    7) Mamihlapinatapai that leads to fumbling for justifications on why they seemed caring towards each other.
    8) She shopped for just the one dress while the montage is more him imagining wrongly that she was doing it for him LOL.

Next, I’m not even thinking of a kdrama, because lately I’ve found cdramas more engaging. Since Snowstorm is now most in my mind and memory (first 20 episodes or so) I can list the tropes [in no particular order and not in a straight line] as:

    1) Speaking in English (a lot more of this than other shows because many episodes are shot in Finland).
    2) [Cheating a bit here!] Instead of Korean BBQ we have Chinese Hot Pot (and lots of meals).
    3) Tall guy, short girl.
    4) Expert kissing technique.
    5) Lots of mamihlapinatapai.
    6) They travel together but not just on the road, and spend nights together.

And how about something from Japan, First Love Hatsukoi!
    1) Speaking in English.
    2) Childhood connection.
    3) Mamihlapinatapai because he wanted her to remember him but he needed her to recall and say it.
    4) Coincidence or fate dilemma.
    5) Expert kissing (even as teens!).
    6) Vehicular accident.
    7) Falling down the stairs in his arms.
    8) Hospitalized.
    9) Road trip together to see her dad and they spent the night out.
    10) Tall guy, short girl.

Thanks @pkml3! The ones I really like, I can recall!

  9. How do we play?

  10. empress new clothes

2nd row from the right: BINGO VERTICAL
Destined with You / My Demon fulfills all of them

1st row from the right: BINGO VERTICAL
I think Marry my Husband also fulfills all of them

Sorry I am trying to use the more recent ones that I can still remember!
Else it would have to be different shows all down the row to hit BINGO!

  11. 3rd row across KTL

  12. Other worked-to-death tropes in drama-land:
    (a) temporary amnesia
    (b) forced room-mate arrangements
    (c) shocking birth secret
    (d) at least one contract marriage
    (e) and of course the ubiquitous ToD

  13. In KTL, I particularly remember his slow motion walk into the restaurant in one of the first episodes. It struck me as out of place because he had not yet done anything heroic Or anything much at all. It was like product placement for himself.

  14. Kalimera,

I had to look for bingo rules, since I am not very familiar with it.
Still, I am going to say this:

    Bingo Horizontal!

    Oh My Venus in :

    1. Sharing an Umbrella
    2. Childhood connection
    3. Mamihlapinatapai
    4. Vehicular Accident
    5. Shirtless guy broding in the shower (generally we got to see his naked torso because he was exercising)

In this one we also have: Hospitalized, Rich Man – Poor Woman

  15. P.S. Happy Valentines Day to you all!

  16. Ξ™ Also think that :

    First row : Bingo Vertical
is also : The Legend of the Blue Sea.

  17. @GrowingBeautifully, I can’t recall much specifically as well, but I agree that Snowstorm fits into many of these wonderfully. Lots of noodles; no Korean BBQ however. One would need to have to substitute lobster pasta. πŸ¦žπŸ˜„

  18. empress new clothes

    4th row BINGO HORIZONTAL
wrist grab: cable charging on tattoo (My Demon)
Shopping montage: ripping off scum fiance (Marry my Husband)
Vehicular accident: numerous trucks / cars (Marry my Husband)
Hiding together/intimacy: teleporting to supply store /Polaroid station (My Demon)
    Eating Ramyeon: Welcome to Sam-dalri

  19. Second Row : Bingo Horizontal

Guardian: The Great and Lonely Guard ! πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—

  20. Correction: GOD!

  21. First Row : BINGO Diagonally

    Strong Woman Do Bong Soo.

  22. Fourth Row: Bingo Horizontal

    W: Two Words Apart

  23. Third Row: Bingo Horizontal

    The King: Eternal Monarch

  24. Happy Valentine’s Day to @Packmule3 and my BoD chingus! I hope this day reminds you that you are loved, and inspires you to say joahaeyo (I like you; polite), or even saranghae (I love you; informal) to someone special in your life.

@Packmule3, when I read through your gift, the Kdrama bingo card, I immediately thought I’d be able to find everything in my all-time favorite Kdrama, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin). In reflection, finding a bare, shower-drenched torso might not happen in Goblin. Gong Yoo was too big a star, after Train to Busan, to be forced into that kind of fan service. And kissing was not a focus of the OTP in this drama, probably because of the young age of Eun Tak when she and Kim Shin began their relationship. I’ll have to look at the kiss between Grim Reaper and Kim Sun, when he gives her the memories of her past life, to see if it was notable technique-wise. I’d be surprised if it was, because Grim Reaper otherwise displayed amusing inexperience when it came to dating.

I’ll take up the challenge later, as I’m off to have a Valentine’s Day breakfast with my hubby.

  25. I have never done this before but do enjoy Mentally cataloging tropes. There are some that are.
So frequent that I don’t really note them, like stomach growling, ramian eating, Umbrella sharing unless it is an iconic scene like Something in the rain or legend of the blue sea. Umbrellas and going to buy them sure happens a lot in k drama.

Can’t remember the show but I remember a character commenting on how much it was raining During a stretch of the show that was particularly sad.

It is fun to watch some of the older dramas to see the origins of these tropes. Double Amnesia is a particularly fun one.
