The Midnight Studio: Open Thread

The thread is open.

At this point, I think most of us should practice JOMO (“joy of missing out”). But if there’s a kind soul out there who’s watching this, please give us an update.

The screenwriter, Kim Yi Rang, previously wrote “Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency” which wouldn’t have been so bad if the female lead played by Gong SeungYeon wasn’t such a try-hard. I want to see progress in the writing.

As for the director, Song Hyun Wook, he isn’t a newbie. Among others, he’s directed “Marriage, Not Dating” (2014), “Introverted Boss” (2017), “Beauty Inside” (2018),  and “The King’s Affection” (2021).

The actors of “The Midnight Studio” are Joo Won (“Alice” and “Stealer: the Treasure Keeper”) and Kwon NaRa (“Bulgasal”). They’re both easy on the eyes.

Frankly, this kdrama is giving me Hong sisters’ vibes. Remember “Hotel del Luna” and “The Master’s Sun”? Just like in “Hotel del Luna,” ghosts are the only business clients of the male lead. And like in “The Master’s Sun,” the ghosts somehow are repelled by the female lead’s physical presence. I guess, this is one reason the Hong sisters are considered great screenwriters. When it comes to tropes, they’re trendsetters, that is, they create and popularize tropes instead of just copying them.

Enjoy the show!

  1. I will watch the Pilot @Packmule3!

I will write my thoughts here for you to see!

    Happy Travels! ❤️🎈🫶

  2. 😍 Thanks a million.

  3. @Packmule3,

I really like it. It has a “May I help you” vibe. Tomorrow, I will tell you more!

  4. Kalimera!

Let’s give you some info on the characters.

Seo Ki Joo (Joo Won) has the ability to take the last picture of a dead person. He is the photographer of Midnight Studio and we learn how that happened, but I am keeping that spoiler free. This position comes with a grim price for his line.

Ha Bom (Kwon NaRa) is a lawyer. She used to be a Procesutor but quit? She is working as a part timer.

Somehow, they will be entangled, because Ha Bom also has a secret herself.

Yoo In Soo plays Go Dae Ri. He is Ki Soo’s assistant, while Eum Moon Suk plays Baek Nam Gu who is another ghost who helps Ki Soo with the ghosts who are not lost and not very nice to be around.

I am also reading on MDL that some are happy because Han Groo is back as Jin Na Rae, a lawyer.

Lastly, Kim Young Ok is playing So Geum Soon aka Bom’s grandmother.

    Later I will post more.

  5. Oh, my girl Han Groo is back?! I’ve missed her so much. I thought she had retired from the entertainment industry for good, so this is fantastic news! Thank you so much for sharing that @Cleopatra. I hope that she can revive her career and eventually get back to leading roles. She really does so well in comedy. (Although her performance in melodrama One Warm Word was good as well.)

  6. Is the show episodic (ghost of the week)?

  7. Kalimera @SnowFlower,

Yes it is. One ghost per episode so far.

I really like it because it also has “Missing: The Other Side” vibes, but friends of mine are saying that it has “Hotel De La Luna” vibes.

So, you have an idea I think.

  8. @Table122000,

I haven’t seen her before so I don’t know who Han Groo is. I read though that she is a very good actress and idol at the same time?

Please give me information regarding her past work!

  9. I am definitely going to continue watching this show. It is really heart warming, although you get to cry.

Episode 2 had as guest the child actor Seo Woo Jin, who was amazing in his portrayal. And that’s I am going to say for now!

  10. I started this show today, since I am finally free enough to catch up with the other two kdramas I have been watching, Dr.Slump and Queen of Tears.

Interestingly, I have seen most of the supporting actors/actress but not the FL and ML! Agree with Cleopatra on the Del Luna vibes but with scarier consequences? Even the music sounds like del luna…except that these ghosts can do real damage to those who see them.
It also has the Mystic Pop-up and Tomorrow setting where there is help and resolution to each character we see. So much tears involved.

On main character, I mean after being ‘involved” with ghosts he still doesn’t manage to manage it…many of ghosts he sees are scary and will go after him!
That said, I love his ghost sidekicks…wondering how he found them. They are his great supporters to the extent of..
“A ghost is giving me a ghost-repelling kit.”

So it seems like this drama is a series of stories and hopefully how he manage to finally break his curse of dying at 35. I’m looking forward to that.
Also, this line of sons are rather lucky huh, that they will always have another son to continue the blood line before they turn 35. He doesn’t seem to potentially have a future son since he has 105 days left till he dies. Does that mean the curse ends at him if he doesn’t have a son??
