Fifteen more minutes to go but I thought I’d come on in to say I’m here. 🙂
I am here too. Hello everyone Happy to be back here.
Hello @GB, I am here too
Hi @FF, @GB, @MM. I am finally able to be back at the rewatches after much travel. I spent part of the break getting caught up with the episodes I missed along with your comments.
Hi @MM and @FF, glad to see you!! Yes, it’s great to be back! It’s 10pm at my end of the world. Let’s start now!!!
@GB Thank you again for the comparison chart helped me orient myself to the case in this episode
Hi @MM, @SD and @GB, shall we start?
Hello. SD, FF, GB, MM. I didn’t rewatched the episode. So I’ll be more focused on it than comments today.
Hi @SD! Wow, good to see you here at last.
So we start with Soo Hyun courageously going into the lion’s den, with all that trauma still in her!
Hi @WE, I had to rewatch Ep 9 and then Ep 10 to get up to speed.
@MM, you’re most welcome. I should post the age comparison chart here as well in case the rest missed it. I posted it in the Ep 9 thread.
@FF, I feel SH was a bit foolhardy going into that place when she’s so traumatised. Fortunately she didn’t shoot HY!!!
She has to conquer her demons, I guess.
@GB, yes you should post the comparison here. I need some recap too.
Police chief gives them a new challenge (hoping they fail and the fault falls on them, bbbad!).
@FF, here’s the link. It’s just a guesswork chart of our protagonists’ ages. I only know the birthdate of JH and the age of HY in 2015. Don’t really know SH’s age.

ODFTP finds the good way to ask her “oh! you aren’t any victim, you are detective!”.
@WE yes, BB Kim wanted them to fail so that they could take responsibility for his failure (he closed the case in 1999) and be disbanded. But are you watching Episode 9? We’re on Ep 10 today.
Hi @WE, yes sly bad boss.
It is so terrible for Soo Hyun to recount her encounter with the killer. And Jae Han (the old man) wanted so many details from her.
@WE, what does ODFTP stand for again?
@GB, ofc, I’m watching ep10. LOL!
Old Dude From The Past.
Oops, found that I was on the wrong episode LOL. I was watching Ep 11. OK back to Ep 10. BB Kim has caught Ahn being sneaky. Ahn’s is a sad story. He was an okay cop but his daughter needed surgery and he needed money so he had to toe the line with BB Kim.
I am so glad I have watched the actor who plays the killer in other shows where I have liked his character. He is pretty creepy here.
We also see the acting skills of the female lead in these scenes.
Soo Hyun’s colleagues got her statement before she gets medical treatment? That’s bad, shouldn’t it be the reverse process, bad colleagues.
Jae Han is his name. Why I always forget….
Flashback in a flashback, all with stretched image. Hug.
@MM I like the actor Lee Sang Yeob. He’s so sweet to look at. I was thinking it a pity that he’s the killer in this show. He looks like butter could not melt in his mouth LOL.
@FF, she’s not anyone, she’s detective first!
Yo! Speak and fast! No whinning, no hospital before to find the culcript! JH philosophy. Hard motivation he gives her: be a cop first!
@MM, Yes Kim Hye Soo is great. I actually can find nothing to fault in the acting in this series. All the actors were convincing. Loved Kim Won Hae. A pity if he’s not in Season 2.
This episode (and Ep 9) are so hard to stop watching long enough to comment. Every second is filled with tension (or in Ep 9 also humor).
@FF, I guess as long as she could talk they could question her. Time is of the essence and all that LOL. But perhaps if they’d waited for her to calm down a bit more, she might have been more coherent and made less of a mistake about the way she ran to escape.
@WE, JH is hard towards SH at first and it’s HY who later gets him to be a bit less harsh.
@GB, and he’s villain in While you were sleeping.
What the makjang “Eve” to find him as a good guy.
With the actress of “ok be Not ok” (or a thing like that).
@SD, I enjoy every rewatch I do of this show. I rewatch first and then come here so that I can read and comment more than watch.
@GB, thanks for the link. I first noticed Lee Sang Yeob from this drama too. The cases were closed because they cannot find a suspect, sigh.
Even today she has read eyes, just the idea to remember the time she was kidnaped.
@WE, ah yes, Lee Sang Yeob was in While You Were Sleeping (2017). I like his ‘sweet’ looking face but he makes a chilling criminal.
Soo Hyun recounts how the case got closed and became a cold case.
Finally, KH usefull with his profiling ability. ^^
Even if he have a garden, maybe he just don’t want corpses under his tomatoes?
@WE LOL when he stands up to do the profiling everyone looks fed up… because he’d been arrogant before. This time I noticed that he’s humble. He says that he does not have experience out in the field but can give them only theoretical points to work fromm which may or may not help them. I think they took this a bit better than before.
Soo Hyun goes through hypnosis, hehe I always have doubts about hypnosis.
@WE, do you grow tomatoes in your garden?
I really don’t want corpses anywhere in my home or garden … even if they have been rendered into ashes… some Twilight Zone show had a dead child becoming fertilizer!!! Horrendous!!!
Damn killer, it’s already painful to be depressive, but on the top, he comes to kill you because of that. Baaaaaad.
I would add that for the profiling: he’s depressive, would like to commit suicide but can’t, so he kill other people.
(amazing profiling ability than mine, isn’t it?)
(kissing myself in public now) 😀
@FF, I think the hypnosis did not do much for her or the investigation at first, but perhaps it shook her memories up a bit more so that she had better recall later.
@WE where exactly are you right now? Not at home on your computer but out having tea somewhere?
@GB, I can be only at my home of course. I’ve nothing else than a computer to watch dramas. It’s time before dinner, so slowly drinking a glass of whyskey. 😉
@GB, serial killers don’t think like normal people. They probably love corpses under their tomatoes. I watched a documentary on serial killers, they love their kills. They are always mild mannered, smiling shyly even at the defendant stand. One was described as enjoyed recounting his kills in court.
@FF There’s something strange about the hypnosis… we only saw her fall down but at the end of the hypnosis she has a very violently terrified reaction that causes the hypnotist to stop the session. This episode we don’t get to see why she reacts this way. We have to wait until later.
@GB, but I consider BOD being a public place.
So, this line. ahahaha… (nervous gigle)
@WE, your dinner time is pretty early. Nearer 5.30pm than 7pm?
Hypnosis experience turns out to be close to the scene in “the exorcist”. I expect her head doing a 180°.
KH preambles his profile in a clever way to make him and the profile more palatable to the others.
@FF, that’s chilling!!! I wonder, are they on the spectrum of some kind? Not ‘normal’ or something.
@WE I won’t continue watching if she turns her head 180 degrees.
@GB, time to end up everything it’s about 7pm. 😉
@MM, yes HY is smart enough to know that he’s not liked.
Aah a good transmission. Loved how JH is so shocked that SH is HY’s Team Leader LOL.
I’m just starting to cry with this scene on talkie. T T
I am struck with how both in the original accounting of her capture and near death and here in the hypnosis session SH has to publicly recount a horrifying episode. I would think, that in and of itself would affect her ability to recall accurately and testify. Especially the first time when they are all huddled around her, all men, all demanding.
@FF LOLOL… neither will I watch even if she turns her head 270 degrees LOLOL. That’s creepy already.
I like the transmission where HY tells JH to be nicer to SH. He is cut off before he can tell JH that he went missing.
Instead of “dead”, the talking shutting down dead.
AWWWWWESOOOOOOMMME!!!!
It was a one minute talkie scene extended to 10 minutes, but just subjective time with lot of emotion of course, not the real fact. 🙂
@WE, yes that walkie talkie was a great side character that we often ignore or forget. It allowed the characters to say so much and enabled them to solve the cases.
@GB, I think the documentary did not mention anything about difference in terms of DNA but the common thing is that they do not feel compassion or empathy for others.
@SD, I noticed that too. SH had to always cope as the only woman in a group of many men and she had to be able to hold up well to all the questioning. There was less consideration for victims in the past.
Such great scene again. The orange burns him, as if having a feeling do it.
Flashback: the killer had a very bad mom.
@FF, so likely sociopaths or psychopaths, as these lack empathy. They only know if they suffer and want to avoid it for themselves but cannot transfer this to understanding others’ pain.
It’s crazy how the child actor looks like the adult one.
@WE, this show makes us feel sorry for the Killer. He was made into a crazy person by the constant ill-treatment of his mother.
@WE, perhaps they had a good casting director who scoured child actors to get the right look.
Only in a kdrama you start a love story with a psychopath. I bet he will the guy who crushed her phone.
couple therapy via walkie talkie!
It’s so sad, The girl Killer didn’t know he liked, Yoo Seung Yeon, carried an umbrella and sheltered him to his home. She was kind towards him and liked him but
he didn’t understand this. She’s surprised that he knows her name. I wonder how he knew the names of all his victims.
Scary scene. We have the feeling he wouldn’t kill her, but we are sure of nothing.
@WE was anyone’s phone crushed?
I am glad Hae Young reminded Jae Han the Soo Hyun is a victim after all. Being a policewoman does not make her a super woman, does not mean that she is fearless.
LOL @MM. I must say that HY makes an ok profiler since he’s observant. He notes that SH is tense and bothered about being in the vicinity of the Killer, but she stubbornly goes off on her own (again!)
@FF, the dynamics of HY and JH with SH are great. They compliment each other. Because of HY’s advice, JH finally visits SH to find out how she is.
It’s a turning point meeting for her and possibly for him too. What he says has in impact on whether she continues as a cop. Loved how he used HY’s info to say that she might become a Team Leader one day.
@WE I thought that too about how much the child looked like the adul, the first time I watched.
@GB, but Jae Han had a little smirk on his face after he mentioned team leader.
LOL JH admits to being scared of criminals too. And in this conversation with SH she finds out that he has a metal plate in his right shoulder.
He is such a determined detective. Someone has to catch the criminals… and he keeps at it.
LOL he wonders if she can really become a Team Leader. And the box has only 1 persimmon in it and JH claims he had none of them LOLOL.
The whole kaki scene is gold.
Can’t comment more, too much to say.
I had a computer glitch, now solved, but I need to run off early. I will finish the show on my own and add comments later, if I have any. I found this with W, but with very few other dramas: each rewatch of Signal brings more information. And even with that I am tense each time! This series is so good!
Good to be back watching with you. See you next week.
@FF yeah, he didn’t know if he should believe that she’d ever make it to become a Team Leader heheheh!
Now we see that HY’s advice to visit all real estate agents finally starts to pay off. He finds the factory where the last victim got mercury poisoning slowly through her job.
See you @SD! Yes, every rewatch of this show is good!!!
@SD, see you soon. 😉
HY is doing more work now than SH… he’s good at going with his hunches. Now he reads the victim’s journal and finds out that she probably went to convenience stores often.
The time she didn’t go, the Killer had found her having a company dinner. He had been watching for her.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
So great: as soon as he enters, he sees the store is anormaly clean and perfect!
He tried to kill Soo Hyun in the open, so untypical of a serial killer.
She found his house, he found his workplace but he is impulsive as usual and tried to man handle the first employee he saw in the convenience store.
Hidden memory (and flashback). ahaha.
I feel like in a known ground.
I actually wanted to ask if everyone had a good break. I was busy attending courses and concert. The break was timely.
Oh shit, scene transition with the killer voice.
Soooo good!
“of course”, she’s in first line now;
Because “exorcise your demons” trope. 🙂
@FF I had a busy break as I was sort of on course, but at the same time it was very good.
I’ve to quit now, have a good week!
Bye @WE and Everyone! See you all next week! It was a great rewatch. So happy to be back and able to watch dramas!
I am only realizing in this rewatch the connection between the hypnosis scene and the scene where we see him tryig to strangle her. She thought she had passed out. JH saved her life.
@MM, I only realised with a new rewatch that SH had been strangled but was saved just in time.
@WE what is kaki?
I had a very enjoyable break on Vancouver Island visiting my son and his wife in their new home. Vancouver Island is beautiful and eating out there is a joy because restaurants are willing to accommodate food sensitivities. And the seafood is delicious!
I have really missed these rewatches and am happy to be back. See you all next week.
@GB and others. Perhaps they never did take SH to the hospital afterh she was attacked. If they did , she did not realize she had been strangled- The marks would have been evident.
@MM, that’s an interesting point. I wonder too how come she had that repressed memory and if her colleagues had realised that she’d really been strangled. I know that in one of JH’s transmissions he said the murderer had almost killed his rookie too, but no mention that she’d been strangled.
Now it makes sense why during the hypnosis she recalls that she banged into something and then started to panic and suffocate. She’d run into the Killer who started to strangle her right there and then in the open. I guess it’s one of those plot points (like what @FF mentioned above) about why he didn’t drag her back into the house. She had to be saved by JH, so she had to be outdoors where he could see her.
Then her terrified, panicked reaction to being touched by JH also makes sense. She was still in fear for her life and didn’t recognise who was with her.
I can make up a very plausible explanation to myself why she did not know she had been strangled. Traumatic memory loss. And maybe she was just not very receptive to the other indications If there were any that that had happened.
Actually, she would have seen the marks herself.
And the bruising. So she really did just screen it all out. And she is somewhat aware of that, as she indicates When she comes upon the location again, She says something to the effect that there was something She had not wanted to remember. Very Helpful to her that HY Told j h to be Kind to her Because she was going through a rough time.
I am writing this in detail.Because I was thinking it might be a minor plot hole.Or continuity error but I have changed my mind on that. I had written earlier. There are no plot holes in sight in this drama.
@GB Did you ever get enough rain to test your awnings out?
@MM, still not the kind of torrential rain that I’d like to have and the other thing is the awning is not as low as we’d like. From what my husband says, there will be splash from the high fall so we still have to place mats or troughs or buckets to keep the water from splashing into the house. The whole reason for the awnings was so that we could keep the door open to get air when it rained. We couldn’t have the awning lower because of the design of the door. *sigh* I’m sure we’ll come up with something.
As for Signal and SH’s strangulation, yes, I came up with that thought that it was so traumatic that her mind put it aside and she ‘forgot’.
Not much in the way of plot holes except if we want to be nit picky about the Killer trying to strangle her in the lane rather than in his own home which was just a few steps away.🧐🤪
My daughter brings not one but two dogs over when she visits. One of them decided to follow her into the house through the screen door. So now the mosquitoes wasps Ants and whatever have a highway into the house🙃🤔😠
@MM Eeeks, what are mosquito wasps!!! They sting and the stings both itch and hurt? I suppose you have to fix that screen door or suffer many intruders.
I also need to use commas!
That scrren door has been on my husband’s fix it list for a few years. Tape may work!
We’re actually going to put up a mesh to keep mosquitoes out, since we want to keep one of the windows open most of the time. So far so good, no one has complained about getting mozzie bites and the mesh is not up yet.
I guess all that will change when the real rains kick in!!!
I’m rewatching few scenes from this episode.
I can see better how it’s made.
Plot line: about the investigation to find the criminal.
Story line: about Soo Hyun trauma to have been kidnapped.
I think the writer thinks about both of that, then mix it.
Story line use powerful scenes. Maybe I forget some, but here main points:
– JH asks questions to SH, while she hasn’t recovered yet.
– JH and KH are talking on talkie. KH ask him to talk to her, says what he thinks about the fact she’s strong.
– JH talk to SH, while offering a box of kakis.
Two last scenes use a lot of subtext: what say the characters are not exactly what they think, or they hide their feeling. But the writer makes us understand what’s behind their words and attitude. Then, triggering the high emotion we get in those scenes.
@WE, It’s good that you’ve added more here because I also forgot to mention a couple of things that struck me and might as well tag that on to my reply to you:
That’s true about the sub-text. With Jae Han on the radio, Hae Young does not exactly say what he knows. On one hand, he knows that SH suffers from the trauma of the kidnapping. He also knows that Soo Hyun likes JH, and that she’s looking for his corpse. He knows that SH would really value JH’s good opinion and that it would give her strength (to overcome the trauma?). He merely tells JH that telling her how he approves of her determination and her ability to get over the trauma would be a great source of strength for her.
In an undisclosed TIME LOOP, might it be that it was because HY had spoken to JH about this in 2015, that JH in 1999 had given SH that box of persimmons/khakis and encouraged her, hence she did continue as a cop and became a Team Leader?
In the talk between JH and SH, there were also subtext. Instead of telling her not to quit, JH regales anecdotes of being afraid of criminals and getting injured. That’s how SH knows that there’s a metal plate in his right shoulder.
I like how JH says: “You can quit. No one will speak ill of you for it. Think about it carefully and make your choice. But you know, it’s not bad being a cop. You never know. You might become a team leader someday.” LOL (So it could be thanks to HY, that SH became his Team Leader)
Other things I forgot to mention:
We note that when Soo Hyun decides to undergo hypnosis to remember more,
HY discourages it, as it could be harmful and also SH had not even seen the killer’s face. However, we had a prefiguring of this before when without seeing the mugger’s face, Soo Hyun was able to identify the mugger on the motorcycle. So, Show raises our hopes then dashes them when she has the panic attack during the hypnosis. But then she figures that she can find the Killer’s house, and she does. So JH’s comment that they don’t need to see the face to identify the criminal is actually correct.
Separately, I noted that after the previous cases, a new transmission came through for JH and HY. It appears that if HY had no new cold case linked to JH, then there were no transmissions. I come to this conclusion because this time when the transmission starts, JH can immediately guess that the case they are communicating about now will be the current case he is on ie the 1997 Hongwon-dong Black Plastic Bag case.
So, our heroes have figured out that JH’s cold cases would be the ones that HY is supposed to solve in 2015, because that’s when the radio comes alive by itself. They can see the connection in the transmissions but how the walkie talkie knows when to start the transmissions remains a mystery.
I still stick to my guess that JH’s spirit, filled with a sense of justice over the unsolved cases, had imbued the walkie talkie with life, to right the wrongs with a like-minded person in the future. What JH could not solve in his time, HY might be able to do with new investigation methods, latest in forensics, DNA tests and profiling.
Another point of interest that just struck me. The Hongwon-dong murders case that HY and SH solve in 2015, is also going to be the case that JH will solve in 1999. This is the only case that is solved TWICE!
The funny thing is that in our viewing timewise, HY solves it first in 2015, but he will not tell JH who the killer is. Instead, he tells JH to not give up on solving the case so that it does not become a cold case (and 9 other victims will not suffer). In our sequence of scenes, JH continues working on the same case that was already solved by HY in the future, but he does so in the past!!! In the end, the investigation done in 2015 becomes unnecessary! What a delicious paradoxical loop.
@GB, well see about the time loop.
The talkie works probably because some kind of psychic reason.
Related to JH, his will that unsolved cases to be solved.
And in a synchronistic way, with the need to solve those cases for KH.
So I think about the will of the two men.
In the talkie scene, we have lot of little moving moments.
Like you said, that KH too hide bit of informations.
And acting is sober, but still here, when JH learn that SH will be team leader.
And this moment, he smiles slightly, showing what we guess since long time.
The affection he has for her. But as the character was designed from the start to be very shy, most of the scenes with him and SH are charged with subtext.
