Eps 1 to 5: The mission at the Yezhou Garrison
For XJ, his mission is to raise an army to take over Que. Mr. Xu, the Minister of War, told him that the emperor wouldn’t allow him to take any Wei soldiers with him.
For HY, her mission is threefold: to be admitted as a new recruit, to distinguish herself so she can quickly climb the hierarchy and regain her stolen general rank, and to help Xiao Jue.
Eps 6 to 10: The mission at the Yezhou banquet
For XJ, his mission is to get the military funds and provisions owed to his army which the magistrate and Minister Xu were embezzling.
For HY, her mission is threefold again. Ostensibly, she’s accompanying XJ to the banquet because they anticipate an assassination attempt on him, and she looks like Dr. Cheng whose presence is requested at the banquet. But she also wants to do the mission in order to make him reconsider her for his elite battalion, and to help Xiao Jue. (lol, see the recurring mission here? “To help Xiao Jue.”)
Eps 11 to 14: The mission in the military camp
For XJ, his mission is to ensure that no “storm” disturb the camp. The enemies are at the door, and he can’t expect his recruits to repel them successfully. And sure enough, a fake crisis is created by Minister Xu’s man, Chu Zhao, and he’s requested by the people of Litao Town to help defend them against the Wutuo marauders.
For HY, her mission is to protect the camp when XJ is unexpectedly called away. And sure enough, a fake crisis is created and she’s falsely imprisoned. With her and XJ out of the way, the Wutuo army barges into the military camp. Fortunately, she’s planned ahead and takes out the spy Lei Zhou and kills the Wutuo general. XJ and some of his men return just in time to rescue the military camp.
But there’s another “storm” brewing.
For XJ, the storm is HY’s secret female identity is about to be exposed to the rest to the camp. XJ can’t allow the men to discover that she’s a woman. Thus, his other mission is to protect her reputation. Unfortunately, he orders HY excluded from the men’s bath because she’s “physically weak.” His rationale creates a stir because of its ambiguity. Soon, it’s misunderstood that she has a weak libido. (Hence, the turtle soup served to her. Lol.)
For HY, her mission is to continue pretending to be a man. But after her “manhood” and her virility became a hot topic in the camp, she seeks refuge from the “storm” in XJ’s bed chambers.
Eps 15 to ??: The mission in JiYang Town
For XJ, his mission is to capture Chai Anxi, his father’s trusted assistant whom he believes was responsible for his death and massacre of his men. He expects Minister Xu and his right-hand man, Chu Zhao, to go after Chai Anxi and silence him.
For HY, her mission is to pretend to be an ultra-feminine wife of XJ and act besotted with each other.
@Packmule3, you might as well add “to help Xiao Jue” as one of HY’s missions in Jiyang.
During the Jiyang episodes, HY doesn’t lose sight of her goal to rebuild her reputation, exercising her skills and being respected as a female warrior. But by impersonating newlywed Mrs. Qiao, HY gets a crash course in female mannerisms and cultural expectations based on gender. Being true to herself within her roleplaying, she resists mindlessly conforming to cultural norms and tries to make changes in the way society thinks. In my opinion, the script gets preachy during the Jiyang mission. (It doesn’t matter whether or not I agree with the principles being voiced by HY, I think the manner in which they’re being handled is distracting.)
@Welmaris I agree her speech to the other women was distracting and preachy. It was so incongruous though that I had to laugh.
