Welcome back @pkml3!!! Good to know you’re home safe.

It’s been particularly hectic but I’m pleased that I found a pocket of time to write some thoughts that came to me as I rewatched and transcribed the long voiceover of Jae Chan’s in Episode 5. I posted my thoughts there on the Ep 5 thread.

If you give it a read, please tell me what you think!! 🙂

  2. Hi here. I come one hour early and will doing various little things on internet.
I just come out of a writing session, at 25% in last episode 54, a bit tired.

  3. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @WE, did you return to the Ep 5 thread and see my long spiel at the end?

I’m also tired after having to work even though it’s already the weekend. I wanted to take a nap but ran out of time!!!

  4. A brief hello. I am going to go to the farmer’s market this morning and so will miss our conversation. @GB I enjoyed your discussion of mask vs mirror on last week’s post. So glad I noticed that last night when I got home from my trip. Take care and see you all next week.

  5. I was thinking I would rewatch the end of the last episode before today’s episode but now I can just read your post And get even more out of it. Thank you@GB

@SD The market is the best place to go this time of year. I only went by proxy though because I had to wait for our new stove top to be delivered while my husband And daughter went.

  6. I am starting now so I can keep up and tend to the dog at the same time.

  7. @GB, yeah, I even post an answer. 😉
I’m currently reading Pm3 article about Reset.

  8. Hi all, a little tired too for various reasons.

  9. Hello, everyone.

  10. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    Hi Everyone, I’ve started!!!

Something slowing down the site from my end.

  11. It starts in a station (train?) with the new bad guy taking lot of money in a closet.
The guy will go to see lawyer Lee with that money, hey hey.

  12. Hello@GB @IF @WE @FF

Listening to BigBang in the bathroom. She is about to embarrass herself again.

  13. @GB, yea me too experiencing slow refresh.

  14. I had forgotten how funny the breakfast/razor scene is. If he still loves her after this its forever.

  15. The surprising line in the dialogue comes from this bad guy, when he says “Yes”. Maybe a 6th sens or he knows Lee reputation, but he’s ok to say it straight “I killed”.
However, the scene try to confuse us at first, he acts like he’s afraid. So it’s made in a way we don’t except the “Yes” line. There is a big sound just before and another scary sounds, then the “out of the world” thrilling music. ahahahha.

  16. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, So it’s something happening to the Internet connection in our part of the world!! I keep getting the message that the site cannot be reached.

  17. I love the fact that the ML is not preternaturally neat or a perfect cook.

  18. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Episode 6 seems to me to be a continuation in some ways on the theme of seeing or not seeing, of being ‘blind’ or blinded.

The title of the episode seems to be ‘The City of the Blinds’ according to my subs.

I looked up ‘blinds’ and found that it refers not only to a type of window covering, but to blind people, but used colloquially/casually (From ChatGPT: “The blinds” (plural) can sometimes colloquially refer to people who are blind) so it seems to be a valid noun. I only thought of it as a verb as: ‘in the sun blinds me’.

So colloquially, the ‘blinds’ here appear to me to be the Prosecutors, but more on that later.

  19. Breakfast is always eventful, lol.

  20. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB I like how this writer interjects such crazy funny scenes and makes the characters so much more relatable at the same time. Loved the Wolverine play of the brothers.

  21. why blind peoples city title? who is blind?

and the storm clouds over the city as they cross the bridge. gatting us ready for truly scary cliffhanger/blood etc?

  22. She lives a piggy life, but saw in her dreams that ML too.
We can say they are bounded for love? Piggy love? 😀

  23. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Ah the nice romantic melody and song… she wants to hold his hand but misses… then he takes her hand instead and she’s ever so pleased. LOL the way they look at each other without looking in the bus.

But the dark clouds threaten and the rain really pours that day.

  24. She maintains her dignity though in front of him!

  25. Maybe YB’s blindness to justice? Oh GB our translation is blind people’s city…

  26. Piggy Love! Yay!

very well behaved in the bus.

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB yes the ominous clouds, thunder and lightning are precursors of a major storm among our protagonists.

  28. I just realise that the episode tittles were not translated at where I watched the drama.

  29. In English a pun on blind-sided (Pro Shin by YB)?

  30. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    LOL @WE, pigsty style living!

About seeing and not seeing… Then there’s the title of the whole Show ‘While You Were Sleeping’. A lot goes on in the hours that we sleep, but we cannot know or see what goes on.

On the one hand it refers to the dreams that our 3 protagonists keep having of each other in trouble or danger. On the other hand, it can refer to how people are “asleep” or unaware when they are awake… how they miss noticing things, sometimes the most obvious things.

We will come back to our Prosecutors. Who is a bit on the blind side? Who has been ‘sleeping’ and not being fully cognizant of the impact of letting something go.

  31. It’s not a lot, but life of secondary characters: the female cop obviously in love with our Cop (don’t remember his name, sigh), while he’s looking at FL.

  32. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM she put on a good show of not caring while feeling humiliated. At least she gave as good as she received.

  33. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF So you do not see the Episode titles? Each episode seems to have a title. Some are significant or maybe all are but I did not think about all of them.

  34. A blind is also a structure people hide behind to view wildlife or for hunters waiting for their prey. Wonder if this definition will be relevant?

  35. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB Yes, the Prosecution was blind-sided by their complacency. They were so sure … 99% sure of winning the case but the 1% threw them off.

  36. changes in behavior — boss and JC bec of the ‘total human CCTV’

  37. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, Cop who dreams is Woo Tak.

Now the court is stunned that after confession to guilt, YB pleads Kang’s innocence. But Pros Son is right to agree with JC that the Confession was a strategy.

  38. oh, heavens, the ‘mountainside’ dream as a rooftop, this is a preconfiguration…rainy too

  39. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM That’s an idea. It could be another way to understand ‘blind’.

Prosecutor Shin is too blinded by her pride and won’t take advice from her hoobae… later she won’t admit it when she’s made a mistake.

  40. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

This is another dream. HJ is not upset by JC’s dream because she mistakes that she ‘died’ on a mountain and because he did not see a green umbrella.

JC had seen in his dream that Kang had gotten away with murder and then killed his sister. So he annoys Pros Lee by asking if there was really no chance that Kang would be innocent. The 1 percent chance or the 99% chance.

Like the Country of the Blind… the 1 sighted person thought he had the advantage but in the end he was the anomaly. He made an assumption that he was better because he could see, but he was blinded by his arrogance.

  41. such a touching scene JC helps Pro up, but its a pratfall! so funny this section, thank goodness it makes what could be a vanilla-scary plot (girl egts chased in a storm, saved by boy improbably) better. much better.

  42. Did JC purposely step on Pro Shin’s clothes?

  43. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF, No I believe it was an accident. JC really was cheering Pros Shin on. But it fell through… another bad omen!!!

  44. Same set of facts, different interpretation argued. Why I like these courtroom scenes so much (unlike in other legal shows). Also the audience is shakespereanly an audienceas in for the theater, regularly commenting to each other and explaining things. lovely

  45. We have a thematic very close to “I hear your voice”. Because she sees everything he do in her dreams, she’s like a CCTV cam in his life. Can’t hide anything.

  46. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The irony is that Pros Shin prepared so much for the trial but in the end it was mostly circumstatial evidence, just stringing together possible links which YB could tear apart.

We find out that it was not the accident that killed Kang’s brother.

  47. I often say writer Park is different from SJJ and don’t fully exploit the high-concept. In this episode we get her peak about using the high-concept. (then I was a bit disappointed about that, in the rest of the drama).

But anyway, as I look at this situation, I could get the “mind-blowing” effect. She lives the final situation, hoping he sees it before in a dream. It’s almost time travel via dreams.

  48. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, nerve-wracking having a human CCTV watching one at home isn’t it?

So now we find that it’s not the accident that killed the boy. The news spreads to the others in the prosecution office. Mr Choi starts thinking. He still does not recall that he was uncomfortable about the state of the corpse, but he knows that not finding the right method the victim was killed means the killer is acquitted.

  49. According to YB’s argument, the brother would have died an hour plus before the car accident then they must have been driving on the road for much longer than an hour.

Pro Shin is so upset thinking that they might lose the case.

  50. but how much beforehand does he see her danger? does he have dreams like HJ does much before which he cannot connect? or does he just randomly nap that day? mind-bending to think about at the same time as watching the 2 girls cower, adrenaline rushing..

  51. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Now the Prosecution realise that they have been blind and blindsided. Just the 1 percent chance that the victim had died of heart attack was enough to overturn the case.

Kang shakes YB’s hand but YB is actually repulsed.

    Stressful music!!!

  52. If we were too harsh about plot points, then we could say plot-hole, because the sister could jump from her seat and says both voices are the same ones during the trial. Hum-hum… let’s bury that for obvious future plot-twist purpose. ahaha. Let’s just say she couldn’t speak because too overwhelmed and all that kind of stuff. 😉

  53. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@FF Pros Shin has a good reason to feel upset. She tries to push the blame to her colleague who did not get the autopsy done. She won’t admit it but she’s feeling guilty for not getting the right evidence.

YB has a point that the Pros should have gotten the evidence, but they had just assumed the wrong cause of death.

  54. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, it seems that the dreams of danger between the 3 main protagonists give about a day’s advance warning. We need to go back to think of the times it happened. But HJ dreams of things way in advance sometimes.

  55. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, I’d think the sister would not want to accuse her brother in public. She waited to see him in private. Bad idea. But that’s something in it of the nature of giving her older brother face.

  56. The first time I saw this altho I actually slept thru some of it in 2022, my final feeling was that Jung haein’s innately powerful screen presence threw off the balance for me. I see now that he is a victim from the getgo. A sad emotional undertow throughout the show. gives more depth than distraction..

  57. Good new, Lee is bad, but isn’t a psychopath. He has to endure guilt for lying like crazy and defending the criminal.
But his philosophy is wicked “I just did my job” (forgetting the cheating), then it’s just you “you didn’t do your job”.

  58. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

I wonder what JC asked HJ to promise him when they were in the cafe. Maybe it was to say out loud the place where she was when she’s in danger.

    Now WT gets stabbed.

  59. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@IB, interesting take on Jung Hae In in this show. It’s true. We feel for him … another nice guy who gets the bad treatment and not the girl.

  60. Is it just me or is JC coming out of the light waving a PIECE OF PAPER! actually mildly quirky?

  61. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE YB chose to lose his humanity over time but he did have it once. He started losing it even as a youngster leading young JC wrong.

  62. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    LOL @IB, it’s just you!!!

  63. Last sequence. Cho Hee uselessly confront her killer-brother.
She can’t believe it but yet believe it.
So what she’s looking for? That he excuses? He already killed to members of family. The girl thinks she will be alive after that? Ok, we need that for drama. ok-ok.

  64. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

The case of Killer Kang even extends a bit beyond this episode into Episode 7.

That’s when a lot of guilt kicks in for the ‘blind’.

  65. Woo-Tak is seriously wounded, so we guess only ML dream will save the situation here. Yet, I wonder if all this was really well planned. As we see the situation, Woo-Tak (the cop) will just die because of mortal knife wound.

  66. Here, we get the awesome high-concept plot-twist. Like if information travel back in time to go in a dream of ML. Then…. Badass entrance of him on the roof. Put slow-motion, steps on the ground, light flashing, big song, shadow with light in the back, yeah, the whole crazy thing! Ahahahha!!!

  67. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE, this mission to save or keep HJ from harm went badly. It was not well planned because there were unknowns. However, JC had told HJ to give him the info when she was in danger and he had pre-empted it by getting WT to be her bodyguard. I think WT was not meant to be in the picture in the dream, so when he was pulled in to help, he was badly hurt.

  68. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE I liked the walk in to save scene with JC looking so elegant and waving that arrest warrant. He’d managed to get it done that night after figuring out that it was death by poison.

  69. @GB, yeah. I took it like that when watching Ep7.
This cop had lot of luck. The scene’s made in a way we see him dying.

  70. About the courtroom scenes I misspoke. Rewatching later episodes I thought, this is once again the key to kdrama — the use of a ‘Greek chorus’– here done by clearly zeroing in on the conversations of the cast in the audience commenting on the action.

Easier to see if a bunch of old village ladies go through a truly Greco-Roman cackle over the antics of the OTP.

One of the keys — you have to at least, also, etc count in the use of music and those insanely long close-ups.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@WE all the gaslighting of the viewers as a cliffhanger. So WT had to look like he’d die or had died. One of the sneaky things I dislike about cliffhangers… leaving us stressed out on a potential lie.

  72. I am glad I did not watch this at bedtime!

  73. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

    @MM It’ my bedtime!!!

I will probably come back to add a few more thoughts. Too sleepy now.

  74. Did JC have another dream where she tells him the locaion and time. Does the murder scene change because WooTak goes with her to the chicken shop? Questions for the next episode. I guess.

  75. @GB Pleasant dreams!

  76. Bye everyone. Good times!

  77. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM I think the dream happened first and then JC told HJ to tell him out loud where she would be hen in danger. So he must have had the info already before he even met HJ, but he had to make sure that she did say it out loud, so he made her promise to say it.

  78. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Bye all, I may be back to post some more when I’m more awake!

  79. I’ve to go too. See you soon!
