The thread is open.
I’m guessing that someone realized that the character played by actor Kim JungHyun — that is, the friend of YeongRye’s oppa, aka Daddy Long Legs (DLL) – is receiving more approval than the male lead that he’s now been promoted from “cameo” to “support role” on Mydramalist’s cast list.
When I checked last night, he was still in the “cameo” category.
Both he and JaePil are affectionate with little girls.

Let’s enjoy the show.
Hi @pkml3!! Thanks!!! I was feeling not too brave about watching the 2nd half of Ep 5, knowing that Violent Brother was about to find Jun Hui. I needed a thread to vent my fears and frustrations while I watch. 😅😜
Episode 5, we suddenly start with voiceovers from Jun Hui for a change.
All seemed to be going well in the morning, …. until… (she sees lots of good luck as a harbinger of disaster. How sad!)
Her bolting was unexpected but that seems to be her reflex action when confronted with something she can’t handle at the moment. Something to do also with what she said about holding in stuff until it’s too much and one just falls apart suddenly?
I liked the scene of JP’s step mom meeting YR’s mom. Step mom seems like really kind person. No class prejudice at all.
@Snow Flower, Yes JP’s Step mum is quite a nice person. Pity she’s a bit browbeaten by that husband with a short temper.
LOL @pkml3, so your rewatch is not so lonesome afterall!! Took me a while to read the title of this thread properly!
Another thing I just noticed, both JP’s step mum and YR’s mum have the same name spelt in English. One is Seong Man Ok and the other is Park Man Ok respectively. I hope that they continue to have a friendly relationship.
This Episode is called A Bad Day, however now that I’ve watched it, I tend to feel that it was actually a good day. Certainly JH would want to bury her head and hide in shame and humiliation, but other than her feelings, the overall situation has taken a turn for the better.
For 1 thing, it was great that the issue with Violent Brother got resolved (at least for some time). If not for that day, JH would still constantly be looking over her shoulder.
That day was the occastion that was very good for the clearing up of most lies/subterfuge or unknown stuff. JH’s backstory came out at the police station, JP discovered that YR is his tutor’s sister, and even our fave suitor, Jeong Hyun, being the observant guy that he is, notices the dynamics between the girls and the 2 boys and guesses who is on YR’s mind.
This ‘bad day’ clearly demonstrated the strength of the girls’ relationship. Without clearly understanding the whys, I was super impressed by how YR took action to protect her friend (hard head-butt in mid air no less!!) and took the wheel of the bus as a certified driver to bring her friend to safety! Her motto that it was good to get more certificates because one never knew when they would come in handy, has proven itself very true and a wise move.
Hence on top of all those good things, this day surprisingly showed off Yeong Rye in an amazing light. It was so unexpected because she seems such a timid, submissive little person, but touch the ones she values and she turns into a tiger.
Some cute stuff…
There must be a very big emphasis in the culture that people should fall in love and get married, because not only is college youth Jeong Hyun hoping to date, but high-schooler Sang Cheol is already deciding that he’d go after YR still despite possible parental objections (LOL), and even little Yeong Bae was out to impress Sae Ri in their ‘horse riding’. I laughed when from riding tall he drooped crestfallen as Sae Ri said that she would not marry Yeong Bae, but Yeong Sik who was more impressive. Poor Young Bae. This show gives us love triangles at every age!
The question of family …
JH’s real family is abusive, hence she takes refuge with YR’s family. Mother and brother figure out that she’s hiding. YR’s brother even gives her advice like a real brother would, even giving her the milk his mum had specially got for him, after warming it up.
The friendly Bus Conductors are like family, who help each other out. I like how they sprayed Violent Brother with water to help JH escape.
And then there’s the Bus Company who claims that they regard their passengers as family, hence no passenger should left out and everyone who wanted to board should be squeezed into the bus, even if there was no way to close the bus door. The Bus Conductors’ comment that the company was treating the “family” like a piggy bank was on point.
With such an uncaring family as Cheongah Bus, the accident was just an event waiting to happen.
I’m a little bit concerned about that intrepid Bus Conductor Choi Jeong Bun. She had been targeted by Driver Kim and now had spent more than 1 night out and was absent from the dorm.
Driver Kim’s rather exhibitionist tyre changing activities aimed at seducing Conductor Choi may have worked!! I found his shirt removal and chest puffing out nonsense both hilarious and yet excruciating to watch. Poor Choi didn’t know whether to look at him or away.
The other good thing that came from the ‘bad day’ was that JP asked to just remain friends with JH. That paved the way for them to hang out together as a group of friends. It was a welcome scene were we get to see them just being ‘kids’ skimming/skipping stones or picnicking. However the green-eyed monster was also present.
Sang Cheol sees that it’s JP who has YR’s attention. He typically tries to impress her as well, but again fails.
I like that he’s aware. When asked by JH why he does not ask YR out one-on-one, he puts the question to her if she thinks he’s really the one YR likes. This brings to JH’s mind the many instances when YR’s feelings for JP were obvious. Without knowing all that, SC is at least smart enough to know that he is not the one on YR’s mind.
In a childish turn of events, JP can’t eat the spicy ramyeon but won’t admit it. He’s jealous that JH speaks well of Yeong Sik as someone surprisingly thoughtful, and petulantly tips his bowl of ramyeon. Some of those points he earned by defending our JH sort of got thrown out by his petty, sulkiness!
The irony that just as YR was prepared to say goodbye to her first love and crush, JH became more fully aware that YR still harboured feelings for JP. The timing was also unfortunate since the accident put brakes on going further into this dawning realisation.
In their reality, YR and JP actually hear the song ‘Close to You’ playing from the nearby cafe. YR takes this as a sign to start thinking of all the other times she’d heard that song in her head, when JP was near.
I enjoyed the fake-out and the imaginary sequence. I was quite taken in by that dramatic misdirection, and was even about to applaud YR for coming out at last to tell JP how she felt, but then it was all just in her mind. 😒🧐🤨😜
We see her speaking out what’s in her heart, and asking him for a chance for them to be a couple. And we get all the scenes of them being close in a bubbly world, while the song plays. Of course it was meant to burst like the bubbles around them. It was her way to lay to rest all her hopes with regards to JP, by imagining what could have been and then to say goodbye to it all.
I really liked that we see what she had hoped for if they had dated. It sort of feels like the show is pandering to what it rightly guesses are viewers’ desire for some sweet moments between the 2 who would never be. So after this, viewers can forgive the Show for the fact that they won’t get the pairing that they want. 🫤😉
Same here. I wasn’t looking forward to the Violent Brother’s confrontation so I sped up. On Viki, you can see the images as you scroll past. Then, when I got the gist, I rewound and watched the scene in normal time. It was actually funny when YeongRye gave him a flying head-butt. Like a billy goat.
Yes. I don’t like hair-pulling.
I’m relieved to hear JongHui’s voiceover. So she isn’t dead after all.
I wrote down what she said. For my notes.
“YeongRye, you know how we have those days? When I woke up in the morning, my favorite Yong Pil’s “Red Dragonfly” was playing on the radio. When I went to the cafeteria, my absolute favorite seasoned bitter lettuce was served as a side dish. And someone left a bunch of change in the public phone booth. The sunlight was warm, and the breeze felt nice. You couldn’t help but hum a tune. A day that seemed like it would be a lucky day.”
Fate has other plans for her, then. She thinks it’s a lucky day but it’s the day JaePil discovers her real identity.
Yes, it’s flight-or-fight mode and she chooses to bolt as you said. She’ll explain this to YeongRye’s Oppa later. That she’s really a scaredy-cat. She may just look tough on the outside, but it’s all bravado.
If I were in her shoes, would I have run away, like she did? Or would I have stood my ground? Fibbed? My mom said I could talk my way out of mischief.
Yes. I like that scene, too, @Snowflower. She’s airy-fairy but her heart is in the right place.
It was funny too that she’s scared of her stepson, JaePil.
One thing I want to understand is the difference in JP’s dad’s treatment of his wives.
The dad abused his first wife (at least, we saw him laying his hand on her in one of JP’s flashbacks) but so far, with this second wife, he orders her around but hasn’t touched her. And she doesn’t seem to be afraid of him or his moods and temper.
Really, @GB? Good find!
I’m getting confused with all their names, to be honest. YeongRye’s siblings have the same first name.
Seo JongHui’s real name is Seo JongYEON.
And yes, it’s not-so-lonely anymore because you have joined me. Lol.
Title of Episode 5: A Bad Day
Episode 1: Youth, how beautiful
Episode 2: Where will we meet again, and what will have become of us?
Episode 3: Fate
Episode 4: One step behind
Episode 5: A bad day
I agree, @GB. It didn’t seem to be a bad day because some of the issues we thought would cause problems actually didn’t.
1. On Friday, JaePil discovered the truth
–> but he accepted JH as she was.
(same with SangCheol. After a moment of deep soul searching with “Go? Don’t? Go? Don’t?” he decided that he would still pursue YeongRye still even if YeongRye’s a bus conductor and a noona.
2. On Saturday, JH told JaePil that she didn’t like him and his bad day began
–> but she was just lying because she was embarrassed by her situation and she didn’t want to be pitied.
3. On Saturday, too, JH discovered her brother was at the bus company so it was her worst day
–> but she ended up staying in YeongRye’s home and the Oppa shared his milk with her
4. A few days later, JH’s Violent Brother finally caught up with her
–> but he ended up jailed. Thanks to YeongRye’s oppas.
5. A few days later, the high schoolers had their dreadful exams
–> but it was all good afterwards and they even had a picnic together.
So, yes, it all appears as if there was no bad day really.
But it’s also possible that the REAL bad day the title’s referring to is the last day in the episode when
a) JH discovers the Giant towel in YeongRye’s locker and remembers what SangCheol said about YeongRye keeping her crush secret. She figures out that her bestie is hiding a secret from her. How this will affect their relationship, we don’t know.
b) YeongRye’s bus #100 encounters an accident. I don’t think it’s YeongRye because a pair of white sneakers is her standard uniform. It may be the last student she helped get on board. I don’t know…
The end of the episode is the beginning of the bad day.
Friday, the day JaePil discovers that JH is a bus conductor.
To me, this is one of the reasons the title of the previous episode was “One step behind.” JH was one day too late in telling JaePil about the truth.
*******
Saturday, the day JH originally planned to confess the truth to JaePil.
Obviously, she aborts her plan because JaePil found out already.
I found it interesting that JaePil spent all night deciding how to move forward (he even disturbed his stepmother’s sleep because he was skipping rope all night) while SangCheol simply decided he’d still pursue YeongRye with a child’s play (a version of “she loves me, she loves me not”). For SangCheol, it was a no-brainer.
Anyway onSaturday, JaePil decides to go to the bus depot and confront her.
She says that she wanted to meet up with him to tell him that she didn’t like him. A lie. A face-saving lie. She was going to reveal the truth about working as a bus conductor because she didn’t like lying.
YeongRye chases after him to tell him the whole story: that they had no intention of lying; that they were actually night students who were persuaded to make up the numbers for the sogaeteng.
Instead, he asks her how her mom was doing. When she says that her mom is fine, he thanks her for informing him.
To me, it sounds like he doesn’t want the sogaeteng discussed anymore and anything else associated with JongHui. He’s pretending that all he has in common with YeongRye is the time he helped bring her mom to the emergency room. They can be strangers from now on. If JongHui cuts him out, then he’s cutting YeongRye out, too. YeongRye is just an extension of JongHui.
To me, it’s a sign that he has zero interest in YeongRye.
Another thing that happened on that fateful Saturday, aside from JaePil and JH’s Violent Brother appearing unannounced at the bus depot: the market meeting of the younger siblings.
Since it’s a Saturday, Jaepil’s stepmom and half-sister go to the market unescorted by a driver. They meet YeongRye’s siblings playing on the rocking horses. The half-sister wants to play with them.
She praises the young brother YeongBae who naturally feels over the moon because he’s secretly crushing on her.
But in the next breath, she reveals that she’s crushing on YeongBae’s hyung, THE oppa.
Poor YeongBae. His heart is crushed.
What’s up with this kdrama? Is the theme unrequited love? Everybody’s having a bad day because they discover that their love is unreciprocated?
I think it’s funny how later, in a fit of spite, he ties his hyung’s shoelaces.
But don’t tell me, Show, that this little scene is a foreshadowing of JH’s response to discovering the identity of YeongRye’s first love.
@pkml3, About Sang Cheol deciding to continue to pursue YR, I liked his honesty and his dismay that he was a bit of a snob. I liked that he disapproved of himself for even hesitating to pursue YR just because she was older. He thought it through that he liked the person she is and that was not changed by her age or circumstances. It seemed to take him all of his recess time to figure it out, but that might have been just half an hour compared to HP’s taking the whole night.
About JH’s lie to JP that she had intended to tell him that she did not like him. I had the impression that she had wanted to come clean with him in the first place because she had wanted to give him a chance to consider if he could still like her after knowing her age. She had admitted to YR that he was often in her thoughts, hence she was also starting to like JP herself.
WRTs to JP’s response to YR’s admission of the truth, I had the exact same thought. His changing the subject to ask about her mother and leaving directly after that showed too plainly that he had no feelings for YR and never had.
I agree @GB.
JH likes JP enough to make a clean breast of the situation. That way, if he still decides to date her, then there are no deception and misrepresentation involved. That was her yardstick, anyway. In her garden conversation with YeongRye (Ep 4), she said that she wasn’t interested in dating him because he didn’t know anything about her.
Her coming out of the closet, so to speak, indicates that she’s interested in dating him.
*****
Yes, I like the ending scene when YeongRye said goodbye to her first love. That wasn’t a bad day for her. She had been “ambitious” (just like in the poem she recited in Episode 1) but she knew when to cut her losses.
@pkm3, I thought it was just typical, yet absolutely stupid of Young Bae to take out his resentment for Sae Ri’s crush on his hyung, on his hapless brother. He could probably guess that his hyung did not even know that Sae Ri liked him, and his bad behaviour was hardly likely to win her over.
That childish prank of tying the shoelaces together resulted in a pretty serious broken arm for Yeong Sik. Yeong Bae was shocked and dismayed at what he’d caused, but he likely never owned up to having done it on purpose. However he was sorry for it and was nicer to his hyung after this.
Is this a foreshadowing, we ask? I’d think that the girls’ friendship would generally stand the test of time and events, based on how each of them had checked with the other how they each felt. Seeing the Giant Gym towel still in YR’s possession might have brought home to JH how long YR had had her crush on JP, and might likely get her to double check on YR’s feelings again. At least I don’t feel that she’d ever play a stupid trick on YR out of pique, but she might accidentally cause her friend pain in some other way.
Or by the fact that she was beginning to like JP, she now realises that she was hurting her friend. So again, what would her choice be. If she had the advice of oppa Jeong Hyun, it might be to pursue her own happiness.
@pkml3, I like YR’s kind of ambition. She really gets down to brass tacks. If something could be useful and she could handle it, she’d get herself qualified to do it. She could possibly earn more money for having extra skills.
I wonder what other qualifications she has.
For her self protection, I’d like her to take up some form of martial arts like maybe Taekwondo or Hapkido. Her run, jump and head-butt was impressive, but it must have hurt her a lot too!
@pkml3, About Jong Hui’s voiceover at the start of Episode 5 …
I find something different about it compared to what I felt about YR’s voiceovers. JH’s voiceover seems to be her current thoughts ie she’s not looking back over the years, but is speaking to YR in her mind at the time the incidents take place.
After she runs and hides in a lane, she says in the present tense (in italics): “Why did I run away when I saw him? ‘Right, I’m a bus conductor.’ That’s what I was going to ell him when we met. I should have told him confidently. But now that I’ve bolted like that, I’m just nothing but a liar.”
What do your subs say?
When I listen to YR’s voiceovers, there’s a note of regret about something that happened a long time ago… she speaks of the storm that was coming which she did not know about … and wonders how she’d have behaved if only she’d known.
So, I’m thinking that we still do not know if HJ is alive now, speaking her voiceovers now.
When I hear her voiceover,
Although I am watching other genres at the moment, I have been happily reading the comments here!
Hi @IB! You’re probably getting a good idea of the plot here since we are not bothering to hide spoilers LOL! So how do you find this show that you’re not watching?
@pkml3, I went back to the first episode to catch the voiceovers of YR again.
YR runs after the bus and JH waves her scarf out the window. Finally the bus slows down and YR stops running. The scarf flies out of JH’s hand and lands exactly over YR’s head LOL.
Voiceover: “And that’s how our story begins. We were young, but our lives were exhausting and threadbare. But because we had each other, we shone ever so brightly. The you and me of those radiant days. And…” (She let the scarf slide off her and get blown away but did not pick it up… I found this strange. I’d have gone back to pick it up before returning to the bus. Perhaps she did not want to hold up the bus any more than she had already.)
YR had looked at JH sitting at the back of the bus as JH chewed and burst the bubblegum. Knowing about the bubbles in the imagination/fantasy sequence in YR’s mind, I wonder if this one real burst bubblegum means something more, taking place at the start of their meeting each other.
In any case, YR’s voiceovers have this distant memory tone in the words that she’s addressing to JH who is no longer next to her.
The encounter at the police precinct.
Being an unabashed shipper of YeongRye and her Oppa’s Friend aka Daddy-Long-Legs (DLL) I can’t end my rewatch without commenting on their brief moments together.
I Lol’ed when I saw the white Mercedez speeding into the parking lot of the station. The white vehicle reminded me of the white stallion a knight usually rode on to save a damsel in distress. Of course, JeongHyun (DLL) didn’t bother to park it properly because he and the Oppa made a mad dash indoors.
YeongRye’s Oppa told an officer that he’d gotten a call and that he was Ko YeongRye’s guardian. Hearing his voice, YeongRye turned around and stammered, “O–oppa!”
And guess who answered and rushed to her side first?
JeongHyunDLL.That was such a giveaway that I felt second-hand…Embarrassment? Awkwardness? Titillation? Heart flutter?
YeongRye: O—oppa!
DLL: A—are you okay? Are you hurt? Are you okay? Huh?
YeongRye: Yes.
I thought it was funny because “oppa”, as we all know, has two meanings in kdramas.
Oppa is an “older brother.” YeongRye’s Oppa is YeongSik. She was calling her older brother.
But Oppa is also the term of affection that girls use to call their boyfriend.
DLL instinctively answered when YeongRye called out “Oppa!” because in his mind, he was already her “significant other.”
YeongRye answered DLL then darted a look at her flesh-and-blood Oppa.
*****
Later, the group assembled outside the station.
The Oppa reviewed what happened to reassure the high schoolers. Even though there was mutual assault, JH’s Violent Brother had a police record and was a fugitive. He’d be in jail for a while so JH didn’t have to worry.
The conversation should have ended there, but Mr. Daddy-Long-Legs had his radar out. He wanted to know who YeongRye’s friends were.
DLLn: You must be JaePil. I connected you with Mr. Ko.
By connected, he meant that he was the one who found the tutor for JaePil. To me, there was an undertone of asserting superiority here. JeongHyun/DLL appeared friendly, jovial, but he was telling JaePil that he knew that JaePil was a poor student who needed tutoring to get ahead.
Then, DLL stated who he was. Not his name, mind you, but his status.
DLL: I’m Hwashin’s oldest son.
See what he did there? He made JaePil and SangCheong BOW to him. Nice.
Then, JongHui went ahead, and JaePil excused himself to follow her. He again bowed to the older boys, The Hyungs. When SangCheol moved to go after him, YeongRye instantly grabbed his wrist (reverse trope!) and quietly shook her head.
DLL noticed this interaction, and I think he was smart enough to deduce what – or WHO – had caused YeongRye’s bad mood the other day that she needed to hear his lecture on pursuing happiness.
It was clearly not SangCheong.
@pkml3, thanks for writing out the scene and dialogue. I noted those points too and was amused by how concerned the ‘other oppa’ was whom YR was not calling out to.
Yes, Asians call non-family or relatives by ‘titles’ like big or small brother/sister, uncle/aunt, grandma/grandpa and for the Koreans even mother/father. It was in that capacity that YR addressed Jung Hyeon as oppa, without even a shred of ‘boyfriend’ in the meaning. But he behaved towards her as if he were her boyfriend already.
I noted that he was observant and yes, he was ‘boasting’ that he was the eldest son of Hwashin… so once again we hear of the birth position of a person and we are to understand that he had status as the firstborn, and a male to boot.
Because his family was rich, this being the eldest had an opposite meaning from the same words said of a son of a poor family. While Yeong Sik as the eldest son was doted on and favoured for being the pillar of the family, he was also expected to bring home the bacon and take care of the younger siblings. Jeong Hyun as the oldest son was free to come and go, loaf around at his friend’s place, borrow his mum’s car (or maybe it was his but he did not want to admit it) and looked forward to inheriting the family business. Driver Kim (and many others) as the eldest had to work to support his parents and siblings.
I just realised that Episode 2’s title is a little different in my subs from yours. It’s “Whatever we become, let’s meet again” The stress is on meeting again, ie there was a strong relationship and no desire to be apart forever. In your subs the title sounds like someone is just wondering what they might become in the future.
The other thing that I just noticed on my rewatch is that in Ep 1, JP also had a brief voiceover as he ran from the police and ended up with a hand on each of the girl’s mouths in the cinema hall. For him, that’s when their story began. He had no recollection of meeting YR before and the ‘story’ and the ‘meeting’ for him was with regard to JH and not YR.
In Episode 2, she went by herself to a Club with the name Giant in it, but got caught up with the police raid. She lost one shoe in her futile attempt to run. We see her white socks and it reminded me of the white socks of the person on the road after the accident.
I’ve also just recalled that brother Yeong Sik looks a bit guilty that YR wants to take night classes. He knows that she gave up schooling to work so that he could continue with his studies in college. He also kept elbowing Jeong Hyun in the ribs whenever he called YR ‘Ugly’ in front of him.
He gave her his old high school books to help her along in her studies. So JH was right. He did give off a cold aura but he was actually quite caring.
= = =
In Episode 3 (title: Fate), there was this other voiceover by YR as they entered the Vivaldi Music Cafe and met the boys for the soegateng: “Jong Hui, sometimes I regret that day. That day, if I hadn’t gone there with you, what would have happened? They say three coincidences make it fate. What if I hadn’t thought that maybe this person was my destiny, clutched my racing heart, and gotten my hopes up?”
She sometimes regrets that she thought her ending up with JP was fate. So it was definitely not meant to be, but did the regret also stem from what happened between her and JH because she’d mistaken 3 meetings for fate?
@GB — I dropped my comment and went charging off, sorry not to reply. I watch crime dramas and worse, so I dont want to take up people’s time here. Especially because as with romance I start plenty and only finish the best ones. There are several spy/assasin/crime things coming up in october, but in november I will refuse all gore for Lee Jae Wook’s Last Summer and the Hong Sisters’ Can This Love Be Translated.
Anyway, as an example (after which I may not get any more lunch invitations), Queen Mantis if you like serial murders was daebak. Do you remember Im Si Wan’s character’s mother in Run-On? She was a famous middle-aged actress whose std role was of a bloodspattered murderer, if I remember correctly, and they had cozy coffee-drinking visits perched on the edge of something near the filming scene, she in her bloody slicker…In QM Go Hyun Jung as the serial murderer Mom did a bang-up dreamy-weird job, and as her cop son, Jang Dong Yoon (tale of Nokdu) was excellent.
Speaking of Im Si Wan , he is in the Kill Boksoon film spin-off, but its not as stylish so far as that show.
Ive never actually watched Trolley, so I am doing that, and in English just watched two seasons of the Diplomat (created by the West Wing team) because season 3 is coming (on the same weekend as romantics anonymous, wah).
This may be TMI.
Urgh, I cant believe I am adding to that last…Not to be misleading, it may be immaterial but in QM, the Mom helps her son catch a copycat killer, and the whole thing is a remake of La Mante, a French series from a few years ago, but of course it stands on its own as a solid piece of work and all about Korea.
@ibisfeather,
I’ll DOUBLE-post this in the WAWW/October thread because I was interested in watching Jang DongYoon’s “Queen Mantis” too. It should have been on my watchlist, too, for September. But maybe in October….
Yes, @GB. We’re beginning to pick up on the same things. 🙂
I thought for sure YeongRye would pick up the scarf. I would. It wasn’t an inconvenience to return it (e.g., risk death crossing the street); and the owner helped me anyway.
I don’t want to overthink that…but I’ll overthink it anyway. lol.
Is it foreshadowing/symbolism perhaps? Like, she won’t pick up JH’s castoff namely JaePil and return him to her?
Or is it a character trait? Like, she had no idea of the value of things. She thought she could simply repay it with a fare token. But JH told her it was an expensive scarf. She said, “Pay me back later, and then some.”
As for the bubblegum, I think it was to leave an impression on YeongRye that JH was a tough girl, a rebel. For Koreans, chewing gum in public spaces — in school, on buses, in restaurants, etc. — is a mark of delinquency.
I didn’t realize till you pointed it out, @GB, that most of the male characters in this kdrama are firstborn.
Oppa YeongSik
Daddy-Long-Legs (DLL)
JaePil
SangChol
The sleazy busdriver
Even JH’s Violent Brother
And if we’re going to arrange them according to family status and wealth, it’ll go like this:
DLL > JaePil > SangChol > YeongSik > the sleazy busdriver > Violent Brother
In a way, it’s easy to be born a girl than a boy, as the burden of being the family breadwinner and representative is primarily shouldered by first-born son. A daughter is charged with family responsibilities/obligations only when there’s no older brother and/or the family is hard-up.
Remember the family meal at YeongRye’s home in Episode 1? The persons who ate two portions of the omelette were:
1. DLL. He took it for granted that he was going to have as many as he wanted (bec that’s how he ate at his home; he didn’t have to worry about others.)
2. The youngest daughter. And they all laughed indulgently when she gobbled the last two pieces — Wait! Except YoungBae. He tried to stop her.
@GB and @ibisfeather,
You aren’t alone, @ibisfeather. 🙂 There are many lurkers reading the comments on this thread and other threads. Most are happy just to lurk around. Some are intimidated to post. I admit: I do block a few when their comments are incoherent or vacuous; I don’t have enough bandwidth for those. Sorry.
In the recent “Bon Appetit” threads, for example, I blocked all posts that solely praise the male lead’s acting/charm/chem.istry and so on.
@GB, I like that we don’t have to worry about spoilers! When did people become so fussy about spoilers? Next time I create a blog, I shall call it “bitchesoverspoilers”. 🙂
Good Sunday afternoon @pkml3. Yes, it’s early Monday morning for me.
I usually begin at the top of threads careful about revealing too much of the plot, but after a few comments, and especially after I’ve watched enough or until the end of the episode, I take it that the readers should have gone and watched it for themselves by then. That’s when I just spoil away.
= = =
I was noticing on rewatch how consistent Yeong Rye is. When it came to the right thing to do she would act for justice. She ran after the brat who would not pay for the bus fare, she threw the fire-extinguisher or ‘Killer’ skittle thing at the boys who accosted Jun Hui at the skating rink, and we see her protecting YR in a big way. When it came to family, she badgered the manager for an advance of salary or time off, she went secretly to ask her uncle for money when her mum had forbidden it and she tried to fix her mum’s cart in the rain.
Her brother, Yeong Sik, saw her sadly walk away from the uncle’s place. After this we find out later that he asked for an advance of his tutoring fee and received it. So JP’s mum had actually unknowingly helped YR’s family.
YR’s mum had cried and beat her breast after seeing how YR was trying to fix the cart at night by herself (and in the rain). Yes pathetic fallacy again, but it’s effective! It was a more pathetic scene as a result.
I’m rewatching to find those voiceovers but I’m doing it while skipping/FFD-ing so I might still have missed them.
@GB,
I believe I have all the voiceovers. I started taking notes of them since Episode 1. But I’ll open a separate thread just for the voiceovers so we can compile them and see the progress. Wait a second.
Thanks @pkml3! Take your time. I’ll have breakfast!
Re. YeongSik and their uncle from Episode 2.
I suspect that he was about to ask money from their uncle, too, but YeongRye beat him to it. Watching his younger sister looking dejected must have hurt him, too. He must be feeling guilty that
a) his younger sister couldn’t finish high school and was working instead because their mother was supporting him through law school, and
b) his younger sister was also worrying about the money.
I think he didn’t want to take on PRIVATE tutoring jobs before because it was illegal. (Did I learn this from “Reply 1988”? lol) Something about access to tutoring being unavailable to poor students so to make it “equitable” for everybody, nobody could hire private tutors.
It was Daddy-Long-Legs who pushed him to tutor because he knew that money was tight for YeongSik’s family. For DLL it was all about being pragmatic.
Re. Sangcheol and the reverse tropes
I get why Sangcheol has fallen for YeongRye. Sure, it’s partly because he finds her cute and quirky. But it’s also because YeongRye does the “masculine” gestures that we see often as tropes in kdramas.
For instance, in Episode 3, when they went to the skating rink, Sangcheol went flying and hit the skating rink wall. YeongRye reached out to fix his collar. Her unexpected move flustered him like a shy girl, and he said, “Thank you” in English. In kdramas, don’t we see usually see the guy pick a piece of lint or paper from the girl’s hair?
Then, she did the motorcycle-saving trope in Episode 4. Then, the wrist-grab in Episode 5.
Too bad though that he witnessed the whole ramen overreaction of YeongRye at the picnic. He realized then that she was really crushing on his buddy.
@pkml3 About Sang Cheol… yes the reverse tropes (somewhat cute and quirky in their own right!). YR is a girly enough girl, and yet she takes care of the boy. It’s partly that she’s slightly older, is used to behaving like a parent and possibly because Sang Cheol is still a ‘school boy’. I believe that it’s not just an age thing. She looks up to JP as a ‘man’ who saved her and took care of her, tied her shoe laces, helped carry her mum, etc when even her own brother was not beside her to help.
By contrast, Sang Cheol seems like the child, and she has enough ‘children’ to take care of at home. His level of maturity has not matched up to hers.
I shook my head when SC gave his reason for wanting a girlfriend as: in order to have someone to spend Christmas with. I forgave him because he’s just 18?? (It sounded like something a girl would say).
When he saw the 4 girls at the soegaeteng, and got ‘frightened’ by JH’s confidence, it seemed to be that fear that got him to decide on targeting YR as his ‘girlfriend’. It was not so much who attracted him more, but who did not remind him of his scary mother. LOL.
After this I was continually highly amused that he spoke of her in expectation that she would be his wife. This, in a sense, is also a bit of a reverse trope. Usually for a Show from the girl’s point of view, we see that it’s the girl who is dreaming of the Prince Charming and of Happily Ever After. However although this show is mainly from YR’s point of view, we are given more reverse trope insights with Sang Cheol.
He did check with his best Bud that latter was not interested in YR, but he forgot to check with YR herself if she was interested in him. I found it somewhat pathetic that he had to ask her if she had any questions for him (instead of endless questions about JP). At that stage, he still had not guessed where her heart lay.
Yes, it took the stone skipping and picnic for him to notice that his rival was his best Bud. So the fun day out became a ‘bad day’ for SC!
Just stopping by to report that Kim Jung Hyun is now listed as “main role” at MDL. That’s quite an upgrade from “cameo” and “support role.”
@Snow Flower, yup! Now we have 6 main roles instead of just 3. I’m glad to see that Sang Cheol’s actor and Yeong Sik’s actor are also considered to be in the main roles.
What? From “cameo” to “support role” to “main role”?
Is JTBC demanding a rewrite? Is the production team making an endgame correction because majority of the viewers root for Team Daddy Long Legs than Team JaePil?
At any rate, the actor Kim JungHyun had better not:
1. abandon this project midway for “health reasons” like he did with the kdrama “Time” (2018), and
2. be dating Seo YeJi or a girl of her ilk again.
(I checked viki. He’s still listed as “supporting cast”.)
@GB and @Snowflower,
Last November 2024, Kim Jung Hyun received an offer to join the cast of “A Hundred Memories.” Kim DaMi, Shin YeEun, Heo NamJun and Lee WonJung (actors performing the roles of YeongRye, JH, JaePil and SangCheol, respectively) had already been cast by then.

Then, as recent as last August 15, 2025, soompi reported that his appearance on the show was a “special appearance.”
https://www.soompi.com/article/1767131wpp/kim-jung-hyun-is-a-brilliant-chaebol-heir-who-falls-for-kim-da-mi-in-a-hundred-memories
I guess that’s where mydramalist got the idea that his appearance is only a “cameo.” Special appearance = cameo
But then, I found this report (plus another one) that he was being considered the LEAD for the drama.
https://koalasplayground.com/2024/11/18/kim-jung-hyun-offered-male-lead-in-k-drama-a-hundred-memories-opposite-kim-da-mi-and-shin-ye-eun/#google_vignette
So I don’t know what’s up. For sure, Kim JungHyun has more name recognition than Heo Namjun. But because of his past work/love life controversy and his lackluster rating in “Kokdu” (“Mr. Queen” was a hit because of the lead actress), I can see why some would consider it too risky to rest a whole project on his shoulders. It’s better if he’s the dark horse.

Will finish watching Ep 6 tomorrow.
@pkm3 Thanks for all the ‘reports’ on the mysteriously changing ‘status’ of Kim Jung Hyun as actor in this series.
For fun I asked Chatgpt if there was any news on whether this series is all wrapped and if we can expect no more major edits. So far there is no evidence that Show will be changed, so we take it that it’s all completed. Hence KJH is likely a lead among the group of 6.
I can see why he has a slightly bigger role now and then, since he’s the natural person with the contacts who can help YR in some difficult circumstances. I’ll not spoil it here for those who have yet to watch Episode 6.
THE SHOW’S GAME
Now we know for ure what the mystery is that we have to deal with in this series. The hints were dropped all along with the voiceovers.
Viewers are to play the search for clues/make educated guesses game until the end of the series. We have 6 more episodes to go. Well the fun is in deciphering the clues, differentiating real clues from the red herrings, and to find out who among us viewers deduced or guessed correctly at the end.
