Fluttering Alert: Heart-Fluttering Moments, Ep 5

As promised, here are my favorite moments in Episode 5. Share yours with me.

1. Waking up to see his face

After a near-death experience, the first thing she’d want was reassurance from someone near and dear to her that she was still alive.

lol. So… this must be how Sleeping Beauty first saw her Prince Charming when she woke up from her 100 years slumber.

2. Reassuring her

Wow! What a change from Episode 3. Back then, when she started crying, he drew the curtain on her and withdrew from the room. This time, he wasn’t afraid to provide her physical comfort. He wiped her tears and patted her shoulder.

3. Their light-hearted banter

I like YJ because she’s so easy-going and attuned to him. Unlike the heroine in Third Charm whose lack of sensitivity towards the guy’s emotions raises my hackles, YJ “gets” WH more often than not. She draws him out of his shell. Not only is she a good person, but she’s also good for him.

Here, she noticed WH’s tendency to downplay his injuries.

JY: Don’t you also need to get admitted and treated?
WH: I’m not hurt that badly, so don’t worry about it.
JY: Do you not like it because you feel like I’m meddling, or do you feel burdened by the fact that someone is worried about you?

Nice shot!! She read his personality only after three dates.

JY: (she continued) You keep telling me not worry and that’s there’s nothing to be worried about. You don’t realize that you say that a lot, do you?
WH: I do? (pretending not to know)
JY: Then who else would it be? (she says this smilingly so it doesn’t come off as accusatory) That can become a really serious disease. Make sure you go and get it checked out. (he smiles at her cheekiness, pretending to order him like she was the doctor) Ah, don’t worry about me either. I’m not even hurt anywhere, anyways.

lol. See, when SHE reversed the situation and copied his same attitude, he jumped on her. He didn’t want to hear of her downplaying her injury.

WH: You breathed in a lot of poisonous fumes, so we have to monitor your breathing and your lungs for another day.
JY: (eyeing him mischievously) You’re being so serious. (then she pokes his wound). Look at this.

He groaned softly then smiled at her.

WH: Oh, they’re just light wounds. They’ll heal quickly, so it’s nothing to worry about.
JY: You did it again! You told me not to worry. Ahhh, it’s a disease. It’s really a disease, isnt’ it?
WH: You’re right.

They both chuckled. She got him to admit his flaw. Noticed how she did it? She didn’t get him defensive but she didn’t let up until he admitted it.

JY: It’s boring when you acknowledge it so quickly. (then changing topic) How much debt mileage do I have to add for saving my life?
WH: (inhaling deeply. Now is his chance to tease her back). Hmmm…As much as possible?
JY: As much as possible?! (and he waggled his eyebrow) Deal! (laughter)

lol. I’d like to read the actual screenplay. Did it say “laughter” every after sentence?

WH: Your little brother was really worried about you earlier.
JY: He thinks of me as his mother. It’s probably because he grew up without knowing what our mother looked like. (suddenly looking worried that her brother did something embarrassing) He acted like a little kid, didn’t he? Ahhh! I can’t deal with him. (he smiled and nodded) It may be because Mom passed away early, but he calls 911 even if I just catch a cold.

Please notice how many different expressions the actress Yoon Eun Hye can emote without the use of her whole body. From the neck down, she covered in a blanket, so her face was the one doing all the work. lol. It’s a good thing hers is the kind of face I wouldn’t get tired of.

JY: (continuing) He called 911 before and frantically asked, “Is this 911?” (He just shook his head at her joke – this must be a language joke bec I didn’t get it either) Was that joke boring? (sulking but grinning) I said it to make you laugh.
WH: Shall I give you some more water?
JY: No! I don’t want any.
WH: Here. (giving her the glass anyway)
JY: I don’t want any! (and she covered her face while laughing) Why are you overreacting all of a sudden? You didn’t laugh at my joke earlier!  (hmph!)

As a viewer, I’m thrilled by this moment precisely because it is NOT that fluttering for our two characters. (To me, “fluttering” is one of those weird Korean expressions or Konglish. In English, the correct expression is having “butterflies in one’s stomach” and the word is “jittery.”)

To me, the real work of true love begins when the butterflies or nervousness and excitement are gone. I find it more fulfilling and endearing that our couple delight in each other’s company and pass the time bantering and sweet-talking. I’m swooning over them because they’re not swooning over each other and doing cheesy things.

Hence, this picture is romantic and appropriate for our couple.

I swear lovers of “50 Shades of Grey” wouldn’t understand the “fluttery” feeling derived from this scene.

lol. Nobody’s tied up to the bed.

4. The jealousy scene

There was a mental disconnect between what he was hearing and what he was seeing.

What he was hearing: this is nothing to be jealous about. They play like that because they’re long-time friends.

What he was seeing: this is a scene to be jealous about. She was being extremely playful with somebody else.

So what’s a fastidious man like WH going to do? He gets somebody else to put an end to their horseplay while he flees the scene of his crime.

5. Demanding her cellphone number

lol. Is there a least lover-like way to ask for her number?

Of course, he’d like to have her number! But the way he demanded for it: “Give me your number. I need your contact information in order to use social media and get in touch with you.” was too brusque. What’s the magic word, buster?

Image result for please gif

I suspect he just wanted to leave that meeting in a hurry because HE didn’t want anybody — the unnie, the reporter, the Guy Smiley brother — DICTATING to him how he would proceed with their contract dating.

6. Presenting the girlfriend to the “parents”

a. When his mother wanted to meet his girlfriend, WH looked suddenly shy.

Notice how he couldn’t meet his mother’s eyes when she asked him, “What do you like so much about that woman Yoon YooJung?” He was smiling to himself when he finally came up with that banal answer, “She’s just a good person.”

b. In contrast, when he wanted his surrogate father to meet his girlfriend, he sounded really eager. He couldn’t wait to show off his girl.

To me, both these scenes were funny because he didn’t seem to regard these “meet-and-greet” between YJ and his parents as a fake act or merely part of their Dating Contract.

Uh-oh. I hope this isn’t a one-way affair for him….He seems to be more in love with her than she is with him AT THIS JUNCTURE. Slow down, kid.

She thinks of him as her “savior” (I’m curious to know how she finally ended up identifying him on her phone).

Meanwhile, here in this scene, he seems to see her as this “goddess” or “godly/good woman.” lol. I hope he doesn’t fall for the hype like an adoring fans.

Day 4 of the Dating Contract

1. Asking her to come over and help him with something

This is heart-fluttering because he was finally getting the hang of needing someone. Thanks to YJ, of course.

Wild horses couldn’t have made him request any favors from her before. But now he requested, “You draw well, and your handwriting is pretty (lol from her love notes, of course!). Please make a gift for me.”

2. The gift

Nope. I was more romantic than this writer. I thought she had used a photo-fluorescent marker to write a secret message. (Hey, if there’s an aspiring screenwriter here, feel free to borrow my idea. I don’t want attribution.)

But the gift was hmmm… ominous for some reason. I love that she chose (or drew?) the painting even before he had asked for one as a gift.

But the choice of poetry??

The wind blew, I swayed, I missed the one who walked with me.
– “How to walk within the wind” by Lee Jung Ha

To me, walking with the wind gusting about me is an exhausting proposition. I’ve gone on walks and hiking trips often enough so I know how it feels. If it was just me versus the wind, a scoreboard wouldn’t matter. The wind blows me away each time. I need to hang on to someone.

But to walk in the buffeting wind while missing a companion, a beloved, a special someone? Uhhh, nope. It isn’t the physical exhaustion that will kill me. It’ll be the mental fatigue. While fighting the wind, I’ll also be fighting with myself and wondering how long I can put up without someone who used to be with me.

See that? It’s me versus the wind AND heartache.

So YJ’s choice of quotation is giving me pause. What the heck did she mean by that?? Hopefully, she meant something innocuous like “I wish you were here with me” instead of a foreshadowing of the time when their Dating Contract expires.

3. Time spent with her

a. Eating a simple meal

They both liked the same food and they shared a simple meal.

b. Running with her

He hated running but he went with her anyway. I thought it was very presumptuous of him to say that it was the first time and it’d be the last time. He assumed that she wanted him as a jogging companion again. 😀

The point here is this: whether they were doing something that they liked (eating the fish soup) or doing something that they hated (him: running) or just working side-by-side in their own pursuit, the time they spent together was precious.

4. The atrium scene

It’s funny how fans derided this drama as YEH’s comeback. I’ve been assuming from the start that the scriptwriter is dutifully showcasing YEH’s talents in her YJ’s character, i.e., the aerial exercise, the fashionista, love for writing, painting, gardening, and so on. This romcom is like an homage to YEH.

5. The jealousy scene, part 2

Really? Did he need to pinch his friend/Hyung/colleague just because he was staring at his girlfriend?

6. Lastly, fearing that she left him behind.

I’ve to talk about this now.

You know, this wasn’t the first that WH showed this fear of her leaving him without a word. He did it, too, that morning he returned to the hospital after YJ had the filming accident. I wrote about this. He didn’t say a word but he searched for her in the rooms.

I observed that he walked quickly to his room when learning that she had left him a note there. He only smiled after he read the notecard, “Be happy. Don’t worry.”

Then, he did the same thing earlier in this episode. When he left to buy her water and returned to an empty and darkened clinic, he searched for her. He’d seen the tidied-up place and the painting was on the wall, and he assumed that she had left him again with a note.

But then she shone light on the painting, and he read “The wind blew, I swayed, I missed the one who walked with me.” Then he stared wordlessly at her.

Only after he saw how happy she was with her handiwork did he smile.

That’s why I wasn’t surprised when the first thought in his mind after he awoke from surgery was “Did she leave?”

He thought that “she should have at least said something before she left.”

lol. He’d come to expect that of her, some token of goodbye.

After the “Be happy. Don’t worry” notecard and then “How to walk within the wind” painting, he feared that she left him without telling him. 🙂 He must have still have abandonment issues because his father left him and his mother.

But I liked that he admitted to her, “I thought that you left,” and she dismissed the idea as absurd, “How could I leave a person in pain behind?” I grow impatient with misunderstandings which arise because words that should have been uttered were left stupidly unsaid.

7. okayyy (grudgingly) the kiss.

I’ve to include the kiss here because it was cliffhanger of this episode. Since I’ve already been honest about my opinion on that (cough cough Hufflepuff), I’ll refrain from repeating myself here.

***********************

That’s it for Episode 5. I’ll probably edit this later. My work on this post had been stop-and-go because of emergencies so I’ll go over it again after dinner. Toodles.

7 Comments On “Fluttering Alert: Heart-Fluttering Moments, Ep 5”

  1. Thank you for this! 🙂

My highlight for episode 5 was their conversation in the hospital.I just loooove it. They were like a normal couple, taking care of the sick person and making them feel better 🙂 It was great how YJ brought out one of WH’s traits of being ‘independent’ and not relying on someone. She really did knew him right from when she heard him say that comment to his fellow doctor at his old workplace.

Oh and me too! I wanted to see the actual script for this hospital scene 🙂 It was great! I was watching them and I just had this smile on my face 🙂 I can see their connection in a way that they can just simply talk to each other and yes it was butterflies on my stomach that I felt and not the fluttering too 🙂

The second highlight was them working together and YJ showing her finished gift 🙂 Maybe it was only a picture of a flower and not a painting? That’s why she wrote on it hehehe True what you said, I thought it wouldn’t be a full blown writing over the picture of the flower hahaha but it is 🙂 Hmmm, you’ve translated what YJ wrote, it does sound like a future reference to where they will be after the contract expires. It’s not a happy poem alright. Oh let’s hope it was just a poem.

WH is getting used to her being around him now that he looks for her when he can’t see her 🙂 I thought that was one of the ways to show that he really is starting to like her. I mean that look that he gave her when she showed him her finished gift? They just didn’t use the bgm of a heart beating really loud hehehe Love that jealous scene too eventhough WH is new to it?

Actually has he ever dated? I mean YJ was teaching him on how to look like bf/gf in the car. We also know that he never went on a vacation? Because there was no one to go with. So I wonder if that was his first kiss? LOL!!! That’s why it was a hufflepuff!!! LOL!

The last highlight for me was when they were in her atrium. The fact that no one can just go there is very telling because I bet no one in that 10 years have been allowed there except Unnie, Bro and BFF. I think she is starting to like him too but still early for her to process. Also yes, I see it that he likes her more than she likes him. It looks like we will get our kiss in the atrium too base on the teaser next week. Exciting!

I will watch it again because I really enjoyed these scenes 🙂 Oh yes, it is a homage to YEH, only she can do those things 😉

  2. He is cute jealous and territorial. When he runs with her instead of following her in his car, I give him A +. When they joke they look like real boyfriends. Please post the moments of episode 6, I want the dialogue and the reactions of the food.
By the way, I will keep a statistic of how many times our protagonists have been injured or sick to send them: “A VIP CARD OF A FREQUENT PATIENT”.Thank you, I really like what you write

  3. You’ll keep count of the injuries?? Too funny. Deal!

Yes, the running part was sweet. And I liked it that he told that it would be the “last time.” He tried it once and he didn’t like it so that’s okay with me, and I’m sure it’s okay with YH, too. (Remember how she didn’t pressure him to try on more clothes?)

His saying “no” tells me that he isn’t just a push-over and will give in to her every whims. I like it when a guy (or a girl) can say no. They feel comfortable enough with their partners to refuse.

I haven’t watched Ep 6 yet. I had work commitments yesterday I couldn’t avoid. Will work on it tonight.

Like you, I approve of how they interact together. They’re so normal. At first I thought the actress YEH would overwhelm the actor because she is naturally charming and sweet, but no, he’s actually a good match for her because he looks boyish and sweet, too. He can be firm when needed. But I like it best when he looks absolutely BESOTTED with her. Like that time, he was watching her work on her gift for him. 😂

  4. Oh, thank you. The beauty of a list like this is that I can scan it and quickly relive these delicious moments in the blink of an eye. Also checking to see if I can use HTML tags here.

  5. Before I describe my favorite scenes (everything that was not the cartoonishly evil porcelain robot), I want to express appreciation for @packmule3’s thoughtful analysis of Woo-Hyun’s anxiety about Yoo-Jung leaving him behind. It leads me to wonder about his upbringing by his very young mother. It seems Na Hwa-Jung was about 18 or 20 when she had her son. 32 years later, she’s still appallingly immature and self-centered. She’s is a subject worth exploring in a separate post. (But seriously, her fake-cancer shenanigans are exhausting me. Hospitals don’t work this way and a nurse would’ve ratted out Mom and Jung Ho ages ago. Drama logic, I guess.)

Back to my fluttery moments. It’s been a long time since I’ve grinned this much while watching a drama.

Their playful repartee and emotional connection at Yoo-Jung’s hospital bedside is a sight to behold and absolutely my favorite moment. Fans often measure the k-drama romances by skinship and kisses but, for me, shared laughter is the height of romantic gestures. And I’m grateful for the show’s generosity in this regard.

I loved this scene on two levels—for the warm affection building between the OTP and the masterful performances of Chun Jung-Myung and Yoon Eun-Hye who project so much feeling through their gestures, eyes, and smiles.

    Hospital scene: sticking close (0:07:46)
The whole scene had me grinning til it hurt for all the reasons you list. Throughout the scene, they were so close that the over-the-shoulder shots of Yoo-Jung’s face, Woo-Hyun’s hand was almost always visible by her pillow. At about 0:07:46, when she’s talking about her brother’s overprotectiveness, Woo-Hyun’s finger briefly fingers the edge of her pillow. He keeps his hand close because he’s literally leaning towards her.

The Abeoji connection in the van (12:33)
I’m keen to see how the show will draw out the connection our lovers have through Yoo-Jung’s dad. When she asked him about the phone call to the man he calls Abeoji (*her* actual father!) and follows up with questions about his birth father, it’s the first time he told her anything about his family. Neither of them are overshares so anytime they talk about themselves is a significant demonstration of trust. At this point, however, she has yet to answer the questions he asked about her father when they were glamping.

Note: Yoo-Jung and her mother experienced the fire when she was 8 years old. It seems she’s been estranged from her father for the past decade. Since her character is 29, what exactly triggered Yoo-Jung’s separation from her father?

    ———————————————

    Jealous Woo-Hyun (0:15:25)
Chun Jung-Myung has the best “jealous face.” I loved how he used the CEO shut down the horseplay. But perhaps this is not the first time he’s “wondered” about Sung Hoon?

During their walk on the clamping date at the end of Ep. 4, Woo-Hyun probed Yeo-Jung about her friendship with Sung Hoon:
Yeo-Jung: It’s so nice. I came here with Seong Hoon before but I never knew it was so pretty here.
Woo-Hyun: If you guys come to the villa together, you guys must be really close.
Yeo-Jung: We’ve been friends for over ten years so we are really close. (Woo-Hyun nods appreciatively) But we never went alone like this because we never know what others might say. We always came together with his family. (Woo-Hyun nods again.)

    ———————————————

    Dongsaeng predicts the future (0:17:52)
The team is strategizing how to present the Milk couple as perfect lovers. When Yoo-Joon suggest his sister and Woo-Hyun spend the night at each other’s homes, I cracked up when Woo-Hyun shudders at the thought and protests he’s feeling queasy. Right at this moment, the thought is just too much but he’ll get there soon enough.

    Woo-Hyun’s phone face (0:19:24), (0:30:12)(
Whenever he texts or talks to Yoo-Jung on the phone, he often has the smallest, sweetest of smiles.

    Your face is brighter
Yes, I also loved how he bashful he was as he simply described Yoo-Jung as a good person. Mom is a deeply problematic character but I enjoyed the warmth they briefly shared when she observes how her son has been more gentle and that his face is brighter. Thank the dramagods Woo-Hyun holding his own face has been GIFed for posterity. He’s got full “bright face” in packmule3’s screenshot of his asking to bring his girlfriend to the restaurant.

A taste of home: the impromptu picnic
Look how far our boy’s come! In Ep. 2, the morning after her drunken overnight stay, Yoo-Jung mistakenly assumed the second setting at breakfast was for her. But she immediately understood Woo-Hyun’s rationale for setting extra settings and coaxed him to dine with her. Later in the same episode, at another solo meal at home, Woo-Hyun he smiled at the memory of her sitting across from him. And now, they share her father’s dried pollack soup, the closest she’s ever come to capturing the memory of her mother’s cooking. Yoo-Jung’s euphoria at tasting this soup is so endearing.

    His gaze (0:41:21)
The way he looks at her at the clinic is heart stopping—especially when she shines her phone light on her gift. In her Ep. 5 spoiler, @packmule3 succinctly describes this as “He falls in love with her some more. Who wouldn’t?” *sigh* Me too—I’m falling in love with the way he’s falling in love. I really adore them both.

    Sweaty OTP (0:45:21)
In that moment when they run back her place and collapse in a sweaty heap, am I the only one who imagined them exhilarated after a vigorous, sweaty bout of sex?

Asking for a favor in the atrium (0:44:21)
@packmule3 explored the concept of reciprocity in an earlier post. Growing closer means more comfort in asking favors but he’s a bit surprised at how readily Yoo-Jung agrees to visit his sick mother. I love her openness and generosity with him—and that she invited him into her sanctuary.

The bank loan argument (0:48:00) and apology chair (0:56:56)
Their argument about Yoo-Jung’s “interference” was painful, which makes the truth and Woo-Hyun’s apology all the sweeter. “Fluttery” isn’t the right word here but I actually enjoyed watching Woo-Hyun’s regret and discomfort. Y’all know I’m fond of epistolary romances and was thrilled to have his perfect note (in addition to the poem she wrote on the roses). I loved that Woo-Hyun acknowledged he was at fault while giving context for his over-reaction. Generally speaking, I love how the gifts and favors they’ve exchanged are all deeply meaningful and personally crafted. (Saving the bank loan wasn’t “hand-crafted” but it comes from a place of Yoo-Jung supporting his dream.)

    The drive to the hospital
Okay, there’s nothing fluttery about speeding to the hospital with a stabbing victim bleeding in the back seat but there were a couple things I loved about this scene. We’ve seen how operational Woo-Hyun can be a crisis; seeing people keep cool under pressure is all kinds of awesome. As an adult who’s only been driving for less than four years, I can relate to Yoo-Jung’s freakout while driving and it’s kind of hilarious that the stabbing victim had to console the driver.

    The kiss
@packmule3’s “Hufflepuff analogy” was hilarious. I generally hate kisses-as-cliffhangers. And it’s worse when one of the party is drunk or loses consciousness (see Witch’s Court Ep. 6 0:43:42 and C-drama Mr. Right Ep. 29 0:19:21).

But I found the kiss is sizzling when part of the Viki Highlights reel. It’s quite compelling with Chun Jung-Myung’s lovely voice whispering, “The favor mileage you owe me. I’m using them now. Disguised romance. Show couple. Let’s do that with me.”

  6. @tsutsuboo, I’ll post your comment so people can reply to it, okay?
