Lovely Runner: First Impressions

I think if you can hold your nose and ignore that the female lead is (more or less) 34 years old and romancing an 18-year-old kid, then this is an easy watch.

The director and screenwriter made sure that the audience didn’t miss the important connections.

1. The many meanings of the title, “Lovely Runner”

I can see four.

One, it refers to their first meeting or first meetingS (plural). In the original meet-cute, Ryu SunJae fell in love at first sight with Im Sol because she was literally, “Lovely Runner” in the rain. She was full of life and boundless energy when she greeted him and took the package from him. Yes, it was drizzling when they met but she had the force of a hurricane the way she swept into his life.

Then, when Sol traveled back in time and sought him out at the aquatic center, the sight of her running toward him reinforced his image of her as a beautiful girl with extravagant feelings. She was the type to “rush in where angels fear to tread.” She didn’t let opprobrium stop her from hugging him in front of everybody.

I thought it was sweet when he teased her later about it. She wanted to know when his next competition would be, and he asked her if she intended to come running to him again.

This meant that he couldn’t get it out of his mind that she embarrassed herself for him, and was secretly happy about it.

Two, the title refers to their predisposition to run toward the other person and rescue the other person in she/he’s in trouble. We saw this in Episode 1, when upon hearing the news on his death on social media, Im Sol rushed off to the hospital on her wheelchair.

Then, after her time-travel, and when she thought she was dreaming, she ran to find him to try to give him hope. In the background, the radio was playing. The radio host said, “Your heart beats, and you think of someone dear to you. Today’s a bright day like that. The present will turn into the past in just a second. The most special moment in our lives might just be today, the moment you spend with your loved ones. Run to your love before it’s too late. Right now.”

Like the camera insert of the crossing light to emphasize that point of the title.

Also, in Episode 2, Ryu SunJae ran alongside the bus to get it to stop because Im Sol was unable to get off. To be honest, I was chuckling at how comical she looked with her face smashed against the window to notice how handsome he looked as he ran frantically beside the bus.

But I understood how he felt. He must have had a mini-heart attack when the bus rolled away and she was still on board. She had only one job to do, that is, to follow him off the bus,

and she failed even that simple instruction.

Given that he managed to shadow her every step, without her knowing, since she left her house that morning, he must think of her as the most scatterbrained and klutzy girl there was. In his mind, she was someone who needed saving.

Lastly, at the end of Episode 2, he ran to rescue her from becoming a roadkill.

Three, the title refers to Im Sol’s desire and invitation to run away with SunJae.

She wore it on her head.

She told her bestie that she wanted to run away with him.

And she told him so, too.

Four, the title also refers to Eclipse’s song. I’ll let someone else transcribe the song.

2. The many umbrellas

We saw three so far.

In 2008, she lent her yellow umbrella to him out of kindness. Yellow was her favorite color. She looked like a bright ray of sunshine in the rain.

In 2022, before she traveled back in time, he gave her his black umbrella.

He looked very much like an adult — should I say Prince Charming? — when he knelt down in front of her and offered to give her the umbrella. In exchange, she offered him a jar of candies.

Then, in 2008 again, after her time-travel, he handed her a blue umbrella. This umbrella was exchanged between them.

By the end of Episode 2, it was the thought of her getting drenched in the rain because she didn’t have an umbrella that made him go back to look for her at the aquatic center. He was still mad at her, but he couldn’t help himself. He was worried that she would get sick.

If he hadn’t gone back to find her, she would have been struck by the car.

In this sense, the umbrella saved her life.

3. Ryu Sun Jae’s unrequited love

He loved her since back in high school. That’s a pretty long time to love somebody from afar.

A rough timeline here is helpful here.

September 2007.

Im Sol fancied herself in love with the Other Guy, Kim TaeSung. TaeSung was part of a high school rock band. Her crush on him was the reason she never paid noticed Sun Jae.

Sol: SunJae was in Homeroom 5 in his 12th grade year, right? (screaming) Omo! Omo! He was already so good-looking. I just want to carry him on my back and take off.

This comment, plus her fangirl headband that says “Take SunJae and Run”, allude to the title, “Lovely Runner.” She wants to run away with him.

Bestie: Why didn’t you? You could have if you wanted.
Sol: I know. He was in the building right in front of us. Why didn’t we notice him? (looking at the yearbook) Why didn’t we notice this sparking boy? If I had been a fangirl then I would be a god-tier fangirl.
Bestie: That’s because you were fangirling someone else.
Sol: (confused) Who? (then gasping) Oh, right! I did. What homeroom was he in?
Bestie: He’s not in it. I think it was after your accident. He got into a fight with kids from the other school. It was crazy. He dropped out instead of getting expelled.
Sol: I didn’t know.

My comments:

a. We will know sooner or later if TaeSung had a part in Sol’s accident. Whether he caused it or not. Whether he tried to save her or not. Whether he felt guilty/ashamed or not about her disability. Whether he abandoned her or not.

b. Either way, it seemed like it was only SunJae who stuck by her side.

Spring 2008.

Ryu Sun Jae and his dad moved into the house in front of Im Sol’s.

She made a big first impression on him. She mistook him for some sort of Amazon delivery guy dropping off a package for her. She made a pretty picture in the rain with her yellow umbrella. She came bounding up the street to greet him, took her package while chatting nonstop, lent him her umbrella out of concern, then rewarded him for the trouble with candy.

Her effervescence bowled him over.

My comments:

a. This moment when she first ran up to him must have inspired the title of the show. She’s a “Lovely Runner.”

b. I wouldn’t be surprised if their first meeting was also immortalized in their debut song.

SunJae: (introducing the final song of the concert) This next song was our debut number. It’s been a while since we sang it live.
Sol: (confused) Is that him talking? What’s he saying?
SunJae: (began crooning) I wished it would never end.
Sol: (muttering) This wasn’t on the setlist.
SunJae: The day you first came to me. I hope it wouldn’t just be a quick drizzle. That was what I wished for. So deeply. Do you know how I feel? I’ve been thinking only of you every day. You bled into my thoughts once again today. You are a gift from the heavens. When you’re alone in this world, I’ll protect you. You came into my life like a sudden summer rain shower. But I call your name today. Someone precious to me.
Sol: (tearing up)

June 2008.

Sol time-traveled to the past.
It was a day after she confessed her feelings to TaeSung.
Her accident hadn’t happened yet.

July 22, 2009.

Ryu SunJae’s pop group “Eclipse” had a guest appearance of the radio show. It was two months after their debut.
Sol was already in the hospital, recuperating from the accident that resulted in paralysis of her legs. She also seemed to have lost her memory of the accident.

My comments:

a. I don’t think that she was randomly chosen to be SunJae’s caller on the show. Her phone number must have been pre-selected/pre-appointed prior to the show.

Radio Host: How about you, SunJae? Up for the challenge?
SunJae: Yes.
Sol: (her phone begins to ring but she ignores it)
Radio Host: They’re not picking up. Will SunJae fail without even getting to try?

b. Lol. I thought this had a double meaning. His courtship of Sol was about to fail even before he tried. It was a good thing, however, that Sol’s phone began ringing because she was stopped from killing herself with the broken glass.

SunJae: Hello? Can you hear me?
Sol: (confused) What is this?
SunJae: Hello! My name is… (pausing) Ryu SunJae. Do you know who I am?
Sol: No. I don’t.

c. The camera focused on his face to show that her negative answer had an effect on him. He must have been expecting her to recognize his name, at least.

Bandmate: (insisting) Have you heard of Eclipse? We debuted two months ago.
Sol: (getting annoyed) I said I don’t know.
Radio Host: (interrupting) Fail! Gosh. This is so sad. Okay. Hello? Thank you for answering our call. This is Ham Seung Yeon of Ten-Ten Friends.
Sol: I’m hanging up.
Radio Host: One second! We have a gift for you.
Sol: No thanks.
Radio Host: Isn’t the weather so nice these days? We’ll send you a pair of running shoes for when you take walks.
The boys: (clapping encouragingly except for SunJae)

SunJae’s non-action meant that he knew who was on the other side of the phone call and that he knew the gift of running shoes wasn’t only inappropriate, but downright offensive.

Sol: I said I don’t need that.
SunJae: (looking serious and tense)
Radio Host: Oh then. What kind of gift would you like? How about a brand new model of an indoor bike?
Sol: I said I don’t need it! I don’t need stuff like that! A gift?! Can you make me walk again? That’s what I want. If you can’t do that, why call me for nothing? Is it fun to make jokes like this? (scoffing) How lucky are you guys? Your lives must be so much fun. Somewhere out there… there are people who don’t want to live because it’s so nice out. So never call me like this again! Unless you want me to set your building on fire! (flinging her phone away)
Radio Host: Oh. I’m so sorry. It was not our intention…

d. Sol’s outburst must have shaken him, too, given that he had feelings for her all along. He would have felt terrible knowing that his phone call had only caused her great distress. Instead of being cheered up by the call, she was reminded of her handicap. So, he tried to make amends. He couldn’t end the call without giving her encouragement.

SunJae: (interrupting) Hey. Are you still listening?
Sol: (not answering)
SunJae: You’re listening, right?
Sol: (shouting) Mom! Mom! Turn this off!
SunJae: (solemnly) Thank you for being alive. It’s a good thing that you’re alive. The ones by your side will thank you for that. So stay alive today. Because it’s nice outside. I hear it’s going to rain tomorrow. Then wait until the rain stops and stay alive. Then, someday, a day might come when living doesn’t feel so bad.

e. He was obviously speaking from the heart. Although he realized too late that he made an error in trying to contact her, he wanted her to know that people around her were grateful that she was alive. Of course, however, he couldn’t say that he was one of those grateful people.

Radio Host: To the person who picked up the call and our listeners. We’d like to express our gratitude and apologies. Now, we’ll listen to “Rain Shower” by Eclipse.

f. To me, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for her mother to keep him informed of her condition and progress over the years.

Sol: Mom. Remember the person who saved me in the accident?
Mom: (pausing)
Sol: Do you remember their name?
Mom: No. That was forever ago. Why all of a sudden?
Sol: Maybe because I met the person who kept me alive? I’m thinking of the one who saved my life. I feel bad that I didn’t get to say thank you.

No. It’s simply not possible for a mother to forget the name of the person who saved her precious child’s life. The name should be engraved in her heart. There’s a reason she keeps mum about it. Most likely because the guy asked her not to reveal his identity.

December 31, 2022.

SunJae’s pop group “Eclipse” had their concert. It was their first one in five years. It seems like SunJae branched off to acting so the group wasn’t able to stage concerts. Noteworthy: the leader of the group, Bae In Hyuk, was furious after learning that SunJae was quitting. I understand this. If the group’s activities had been on hold because of SunJae’s movie schedule, then it was unprofessional of him to quit and summarily, disband the team.

It was also Sol’s first time seeing him in person. I guess, she never attended his concerts before and only admired him from afar.

As it turned out, Sol met him up close and personal on the bridge.

SunJae: What are you doing? Is your wheelchair broken?
Sol: Oh yes.
SunJae: (giving her a handwarmer) Your hands look cold.
Sol: Thank you.
SunJae: Why are you crying? I didn’t make you cry, did I?
Sol: I’m so happy. Actually, I’m a ff-an.
SunJae: Looks like it. (pointing to her headband) Funny.
Sol: It’s been my username for over ten years for the fan club. I’ve been a fan since your debut, actually. I’ve never strayed.

Note here: I find her comment that she never “strayed” interesting in light of the make-up that her senile grandmother had put on her face that morning. Those three red circles on her cheeks and forehead are traditional make-up for a bride. On the day, that she was going to meet SunJae for the first time, her grandmother prepared her to be the bride of her idol.

Also, her mother compared her fan worship of SunJae to that of a wifely devotion to her husband.

The impression given here is that this concert was a momentous affair because the bride Sol who had been loyal and steadfast like a missus was finally going to marry her groom. Anyway, to continue…

SunJae: Thank you.
Sol: I should be the one thanking you.
SunJae: Huh?
Sol: (thinking to herself) You made me want to live again. (grinning) For everything. I’m grateful for everything. For existing in this world. All your fans feel the same way.

Then, he offered to give her a ride home. Unfortunately, her bestie arrived to take her home.

Sol: Thank you so much for today.
SunJae: (kneeling in front of her) Take this with you.
Sol: Wait. Hold on. I’m sorry I don’t have anything much to give you. But you like this, don’t you? Can I give it to you?

And she gave him the jar of candies, the same candies she gave him when she mistook him for a delivery guy.

My comment:

Most viewers obviously grasped the significance of the candies after watching Episode 2, that is, SunJae liked the candy because it was Sol who gave it to him years ago.

But I think they missed out how frustrating it must have been for SunJae that after all these years, it’s been one-sided love for him. Sure, Sol admired him as a fan but she didn’t know that he too had been waiting for her and loving her from the sidelines.

Thus, the candy should be viewed as a metaphor for their romance. Yes, their romance is sweet like candy, but it’s been preserved and conserved for a long time. Their romance has been CRYSTALIZED.

Jan 1, 2023.

He died at midnight. He was 34 years old.

My comments:

a. Since the viewers heard the doorbell ringing insistently before SunJae’s death and didn’t see him actually jump off the building, there’s speculation that he didn’t commit suicide and that foul play was involved instead.

I get this.

It’s hard to root for a hero who opts to kill himself than tough it out. First, suicide still carries a stigma that the individual with suicidal ideation is mentally weak and emotionally fragile. It’s more acceptable to imagine SunJae being pushed off the balcony by an unseen murderer than to picture him willingly climbing over the railing and jumping to his death.

Second, the plot can be viewed as romanticizing suicide. Literally. SunJae killed himself but he got a second chance to live because of his time-traveling fan. Not only did the story conveniently gloss over SunJae’s mental health which led to his self-murder, but the story sent a message that there’s a do-over in suicide. That is, his death could have been averted if he was only loved, protected, and sheltered from the cruel elements in the world (that’s metaphor of the umbrellas).

So yes. I get why viewers unconsciously are looking for another cause of death other than suicide.

b. The time on Sol’s watch indicated 3:00. We don’t know yet the significance of that digital display. Is she given three hours, three chances, three lifetimes to rescue SunJae? Is this a countdown or a beginning?

4. The “constants”

a. She kept falling for him – and I don’t mean, falling in love.

In Episode 1, she deliberately threw herself down the embankment to retrieve his watch. She fell into the canal.

Then, after her time-travel, she was thrown outside the aquatic center by the guards. She fell and hurt her knee.

In Episode 2, she was hunting the source of cigarette smoke outside SunJae’s gym. She jumped down from the wall and hurt her bum and knee.

b. She kept crying whenever she saw SunJae.

And he noticed it.

Here.

And here.

He was curious to know why.

I guess, she’s another “Queen of Tears.”

5. The names

Okay. Okay. This is corny but it has to be said.

We get that she’s the sun. Her name, Im Sol, screams it loud and clear without needing an apostrophe, like this: “I’m Sol.” His name also refers to the sun. Ryu SunJae. To my non-Korean ears, it sounds like “You Sunday.”

So, if they both refer to the sun, where’s the moon? We need the moon to have an eclipse…or do we have a binary star eclipse here?

I got the reference to “Hotel Del Luna” too. Manwol’s name indicated that she was the moon, and she waited for centuries for her vengeance/nemesis/Capt Firefly to appear so she could finally die and cross over to death, too. If we apply the same logic, Sol sees herself in Manwol’s role, only in reverse. She’s there NOT to accompany SunJae as he crosses over to death, but to prevent him at all costs from suffering premature death. She doesn’t want him to traverse the bridge of death; she wants him to stay on the side of the living.

Okay, got to run.

  1. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @pkml3, thanks and I’m glad to see that you’ve found time to watch the episodes and even write your First Impressions.

You’re right about us viewers noticing many clues, hints, etc. The Ep 1 and 2 thread is all fired up and burning brightly.

I took down/transcribed the same notes as yourself (which I did not post) and posted lyrics of 2 of the songs in the Ep 1 & 2 thread.

    On our thread:
Impressions of the reasons Mum didn’t want to tell Im Sol who saved her veered not only from saviours telling her to keep it a secret to him being dead.

His expression when on the phone she claimed to not know his name included disappointment that she had forgotten him and treated him only as a fan when he had loved her for so long (and likely been the one to save her).

His shadowed expression on the bridge when she thanked him for everything, and for being alive while she did not say what she thought (ie that he’d given her a reason for living) veered from him being disappointed that she had forgotten the phone call that kept her alive to his not wanting to live anymore.

Thanks for your notes, we’ll have even more fun conjecturing and adding to them!

  2. Yay, good to know you’re watching this with us, @PM3!

Great points on the radio call not being random.

It’s interesting that SJ liked Sol in time T while Taesung liked or became interested in her only during T-1. So I would add that as one of the constants that SJ always liked her in any timelines. She just did not know it (yet).

  3. I noted their perceived age gap too. However, I’m okay with it because 1) her body is indeed 19 years old as indicated by her ability to walk. She’s in school with him.
    2) she did not choose to time travel. It happened without her will.
    3) she has no mal-intentions. She never planned to fall in love with even a 34 year old SJ, forget a 19 year old teen. This can be felt when she says, “how do I do this? It’ll be hard to convince a 19 year old!” Or “He was so crazy about swimming back then”, or “will I have to keep doing this for 15 years?”
    4) they are similar aged in original timeline. Thus, it would be natural for her to imagine him as an equal too. Especially given physically, she’s his age.

  4. Note #2

I LOVE your idea that the watch indicates her chances @pm3. I think she can go back three times. Time won’t flow linearly for her like in MMH. She’s going to bounce back to the present.

There was a similar very old movie called “Run Lola run” that I watched on a plane once. Lola runs to save her love just like this drama but her day keeps repeating and she’s always late by seconds.

  5. Note #3

I agree that it’s hard for people to accept that he choose to end his life. Although, I do not think it’s a murder. I do not think it’s a deliberate suicide either. It could be a consequence of him being unable to pay attention to a cocktail of pills and alcohol. He was ready to do anything to feel less pain and it went all wrong.

I would give them more episodes to shed a light on why SJ chose to live that way. And people do end up taking such dangerous paths. It would be good inquiry into HOW Sun Jae reached at such a dark mental space. Even though it might not be deliberate suicide, he was deeply unhappy and in severe depression.

There is a beautiful piece (by Guardian, UK) called “The mothers of ISIS”. It is an inquiry into why children born in developed countries, in non-islamic households choose to join the organisation. It is an inquiry that the mothers have made into why their sons might have strayed so grossly away from their paths.

It is heartbreaking and I cried while reading it. It’s unimaginable as a parent. “What mistakes did I make that you thought it was fit to kill people?” A mother asks.

Similarly, Sol has travelled to find out the WHY of Sun Jae’s dark mental space and try to keep him on the living side of the bridge the best she can.

She tries to avoid the reasons he might end up that way in T1. He liked swimming. Ok, let’s try to keep him at it. Let’s try to prevent injuries. He might have been lonely. Ok, let’s try to stick to him. Let’s try to protect him. – That’s the way her mindset works at the moment. She’s trying hard to make him smile in a pre-release of ep 3.

“A herculean task of trying to change the trajectory of his life” – the character description of Im Sol mentions. It’d be lovely to see the series of reasons of the WHY. Because only when she knows the why, can she change it.

  6. Lastly, thank you for your list of all the times SJ saved IS @pm3.

Now, she must return the favour, shouldn’t she ? I’m all set. Run Im Sol Run… Run as fast as you can !

  7. 🍪🍪☕ Thank you so much, @packmule3. As Arihsi said so eloquently, Im Sol has a herculean task ahead of her to change Sun Jae’s life. Perhaps 3 chances, as you suggested. 🙌

I liked that back in 2008 she had a sunny yellow umbrella and his was sky blue. But after his concert his umbrella was black, his car was black, he was dressed all in black.

I too thought that he gave her phone number to the radio host, even if the show perhaps called at random normally. These sorts of talk shows sometimes seem to be ad-libbed, but they are often heavily scripted. His reactions showed that he knew about her compared to everyone else – pity he didn’t know about the consolation gifts in advance.

It’s a funny juxtaposition that in her returned state in T1.1 (@GB’s designations in open thread) she is an older person in a young person’s body, but when they meet on the bridge after the concert (T2), he seems to be much older although we know they are the same age physically. She’s wearing a silly headband like teens do and fangirls over him a bit; he crouches down to speak to her.

I did laugh at his misinterpretation of her 2008 suggestions that he not cross the bridge and the ‘Let’s live together!’ His reaction was a panicky jump into a taxi and dash across that same bridge leaving her bemused that there were taxis crossing to the underworld.

  8. Ref Name meanings:

I was curious. To a Western ear, Sol and Sun Jae sound like sunshine, and I think they were chosen by the author for that reason, but I wondered about their Korean meanings. From the internet I found this:

    Im Sol:
“Im (or Lim) (임) Rounding out the top 10 (most common names) is the surname Im or Lim, a variation of the name… The name translates into “forest,” “woods” or “trees.””

“And anytime you see the syllable 솔/sol in a pure-Korean name, it is an indication of the name specifically having to do with a pine tree (소나무/sonamu).”

    Ryu Sun Jae:
“Only the character 柳 is commonly pronounced Ryu or Ryoo (류). (See Munhwa Ryoo) The surname “Ryu” comes from the character meaning willow tree. Hence, the lineage is also sometimes called “willow Ryu” (버들 류씨).”

Sun/Seon, as a given name rather than a family name, is more complicated because it depends on the character used to write it. It can have this meaning: “Sun is a gender-neutral Korean name, although it’s often added as a hyphenated Korean boy name, it can also be used solo:

    Sun: Meaning “goodness”.”

Jae: “The name Jae is primarily a gender-neutral name of Korean origin that means Ability, Talent. Can also mean extreme riches, good fortune.

It’s interesting that in Korean, both Im Sol’s names refer to trees as does SJ’s family name. A willow, botanically speaking, is a tree that thrives in wet conditions near fresh water (rivers, ponds, lakes). Good name for someone who like watersports.

    2 tangents:

    1. I found this about a given name meaning moon:”Korean boy names that mean “moon”, … Dal: A cute, short name, Dal means “moon”. Fun fact: The moon is a symbol of good fortune and prosperity for Korean people. 🌕”

    2. Poor ML: *On the flip-side of good sounding full names, ask someone with the family name 변/Byun/Byeon why they may have been teased in their youth by other children, and you’ll soon find out that it had nothing to do with their surname’s actual meaning (hanja: 卞 ”law”), but rather it’s because of an unfortunate homonym for what can be assumed to mean “pee-pee and poo-poo” by the kids making fun of them.”

  9. Kalimera @Packmule3!

Thank you for your thoughts. After @Arihsi last night gave us the heads up on the Webtoon’s plot, I have been sad.

For Sun Jae, the whole situation is heartbreaking, a true tragedy I should say. I don’t want to write more, since our conversation is in the main thread.

Let us see how the chakkanim will change some parts of the Webtoon for the Drama.

  10. @Fern… Thank you so much for finding out the meaning of the names for us. Sol ≠ Sun in Korean.. hee hee. Good to know.

Both are trees. Strong, giving and dependable? She’s a green forest of tall trees ? A fun play given she’s adorably small compared to him but she’s a green forest for sure.

The actress playing Im Sol was challenged by ELLE to actually lift the guy playing SJ. He’s ridiculously taller and much heavier but she did it !

The video… She does it around 2.00 minute time stamp. So fun to watch !

    https://youtu.be/8Y911pxTPmI?si=Jw2UUHEeplWBvyBT

  11. @Cleo… Oh no ! Please don’t be sad. I’m 100% sure that the drama will do something different because the webtoon isn’t even complete. End of S1 can be considered a climax at best to entice people to continue reading.

What’s more…I’m sure the drama will reward SJ. More so because of the real life fandom of ML continuously lobbying for a happy ending for him. They are all over TvN 🤣

See the video I shared in above comment. It’s very comical and will surely make you smile 😁

  12. I’m sorry to make you sad cara @Cleo. But the webtoon is only 1/3 complete. Rest of the story isn’t even available. So we have lots of hope !

  13. @Arihsi,

It is not your fault obviously. It has nothing to do with you.

It is a cruel choice for the chakkanim to take that specific choice.

I find it utterly depressing for a human being to wait for a mirage of love alone and for so long. Even though, this can change in the proceeding Wetboon seasons with different timelines interventions and dimensions. It is cruel and heartbreaking. Hence, I am sad for Sun Jae and the fate his writernim chose for him, so far.

  14. @cleo. Ah yes. It is heartbreaking. I wallowed for two days after reading the last ep. I read the last ep with my hand over my mouth.

However, it shows the consequences of messing with the universe’s order. Messing with time surely would have consequences as explored in lots of literature. To refer to a few,

Earliest and most famous being the “Grandfather Paradox”. Then we have Harry Potter series where Harry and friends are direly warned that they must not be seen. “There are wizards who have lost their minds, messing with time.” Hermione says.

In Kdramas, the lastest would be Twinkling Watermelon where the son becomes the REASON for the manifestation of what he was trying to avoid in the first place.

To me, MMH was far too convenient. Just go back in time, correct everything and live the most awesome life ever. But here, Im Sol must pay a price for having an opportunity to alter the trajectory of Sun Jae’s life. As @Fern has noted, it’s much harder than just dragging someone away from an oncoming vehicle.

  15. @Arihsi,

My thoughts has to do with being a writer myself or should we say writers are galaxies’ creators itself? I am channeling W: Two Words Apart here, but what what I am going to write down has been presented in several books and movies. Like “The Butterfly Effect” or “The Call”.

When you said that Im Sol was messing with the Universe’s Order, I would like to underline that would be a correct statement,

    IF

Im Sol herself wanted to go back in time and she built a time machine to do so.

In this dramaverse, we have the oxymoron that she expressed really hard her wish to save Sun Jae and it actually came true.

So, if a divine power gave her access to go back and save Sun Jae, it also didn’t give her a manual where she was told that if you change something in the present timeline, you will have consequences, like in Twinkling Watermelon.
Obviously, Sol will learned that with the harsh way.

Still, WHO is that Divine Power who permitted Sol’s wish to go back in time and save Sun Jae in the first place?

We have a Divine Power that gave permission to a mere mortal being to act like a Saviour, but at the same time, Sol compromised the World’s order. See, what I am writing here?

For me, this world building doesn’t make sense. What is the meaning of all these?

That the physics laws are working? That Sol being determined to change Sun Jae’s end involuntarily changed Sun Jae’s present and future, by altering his life and making him miserable, because when she returned back to her present SJ had to deal with the Sol of the original timeline who was truly oblivious to what had happened before?

So, we have Sun Jae who is a character with a cruel fate. His cruel fate was chosen by some divine power who is unseen of course, but since this is a world of fiction, his creator is the chakkanim himself / herself.

So, archetypically Sol became a Nemesis to Sun Jae. This is not some kind of love that I would use for any of the characters I would write.

Hence, the reason I am writing these words to you. I cannot accept such kind of twisted love. Mostly because Sun Jae is stripped of his freedom of choice to change his own life, by staying true to a love (?) that is not there at all.

To summarize, the Divine Power in that dramaverse is cruel, by taking away the Freedom of Choice of the people he / she created and making them enter a cycle of timelines and plot twists that one person overpowers the other, while they are “trying to save one another”.

That’s my interpretation of the world the Webtoon chakkanim crafted. 🙂

  16. Correction : My Thoughts have*

  17. Kalimesimeri, @Cleopatra. My thoughts are thus: I don’t think this will be a tragedy. Yes, fate in many dramas, literature and real life presents cruel twists. Sometimes if the twists can’t be resolved or the game not won, the result is a tragedy, but I think that we will have a satisfying ending here. I don’t say a universally perfect happy ending, but that there will be resolution.

  18. Kalo mesimeri @Fern,

I also believe that the Drama won’t be a tragedy.

I was talking to @Arihsi about the primary material in the Webtoon. The ending of Season 1 is a tragedy. In order to build up suspence and keep the readers of the story, the chakkanim made a choice. For me that choice is cruel and that is what I have written above. 🙂

  19. Thank you so much for you’re impressions. Now I am really convinced.I need to rewatch these two episodes to note everything that has been discussed.

I am wondering if the number three stands for 3 iterations of Sunjae. We have two so far and two watches. I think there will be a third which is the one she will end up with, Hopefully.

  20. On the meaning of the total eclipseI, Bonnie tyler’s song “eclipse of the heart” speaks to this. The female lead is the moon eclipsing his heart Or to put it less poetically His preoccupation with her eclipses his heart.

  21. Howdy everyone! 👋🏻

I’m happy to say that this is another line, hook and sinker drama for me. 😊 I was laughing in episode 2 especially with Otter, the dog and oh I’ve never smoked, smell my fingers. 😂

KHY is killing it here. She’s awesome. I’ve never watched her before. ☺️ I can totally relate to her being a fan. 😆 @Fern, 🤫

Thank you for your first impressions especially the timeline. 🍧🍧🍧 I think I’ll just sit on the sidelines and read what my classmates are saying. ☺️

I’m liking the songs already too. Looking forward to the next few weeks. 😃

Come to think of it, the drama gods have been good to us.

  22. It is spring here and it has been raining all week, Flowers are sprouting From the ground and trees are budding. I have been Thinking about how rain is about life Not only Bleakness and this fits the lyrics to the rain shower song. Also I want a new umbrella- Either light blue Or bright yellow.🙂

About the age gap: I see her Behavior More as her being a fan girl than her trying to romance him. The metaphors of marriage and betrayal are understandable in the context. I think there is some commentary here about fan girl psyches. I surprised myself when I felt like I was betraying my idol when I began to like another one And I am far from being a rabid fan girl.

I appreciate the above comments About the difficulties viewers have in accepting that he may well have purposely killed himself. I think the way it is presented he was trying to kill his pain And overdosed and Then fell off the balcony. I thought it was interesting That the director chose to show such graphic Efforts to revive him. That certainly added to the pain of the scene to see such a beautiful man Being recuscitated After a suicide attempt. That evoked thoughts of Other celebrities Who have killed themselves. I find this even painful to be putting into words and print.

1 This is a rather mundane point- Part of the reason they have not had a concert in five years would be the pandemic.

  23. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

My goodness @MM, so many thoughts. I had a hard time trying to find and read all the comments. I realise I have failed to see some of them at times.

Yes, I feel it’s totally valid that one good reason for no concerts was the pandemic. It’s surprising that it’s not even mentioned in this show that was recently produced post-covid. Instead we have anti-fans blaming SJ for taking on acting gigs.

I once watched a show knowing that the ML actor in it had died prematurely, not because of suicide but out of the carelessness of organisers who had got him and other actors to do physically stressful activities for a reality show. I was not even a fan, but seeing that lovely looking actor on screen, (for the first time, actually), made me very sad. He was so young, so healthy-looking, such a fine figure of a man… but he had died of heart failure. It was a painful, sad watch for me.

How much more painful if I’d been a fan, or if it had been suicide.

I like your take on the Total Eclipse of the Heart. That is apt that his preoccupation with her eclipsed his ‘sun’. She’s so much smaller in stature but she had bowled him over running to him with her yellow umbrella, and sheltering him. I liked that she’d left her umbrella with him and given him the candies, in pre-compensation for a future bigger delivery. In the future, he had probably delivered himself in time to save her, a much bigger delivery indeed!

    Multiple Im Sols
Now that I’ve tossed in the idea of multiple SJs (2?) because of multiple watches, I’ve also to maybe toss in the idea that it’s more likely IS who is the one in multiples. Why? Because we already see that T1 2009-2023 Im Sol does not remember or know of the time jump, whereas SJ does.

My timeline numbering was to differentiate the characters for ease of discussion. From what we see in just 2 episodes, T1 SJ continues on the natural trajectory to meet T2 IM and hence becomes T1.1 SJ. This is the same SJ who calls her in 2009 and sees her on the bridge in 2023. So it’s more likely that there’s only 1 SJ.

On the other hand, because T1 Im Sol bought his watch in 2023, she’s the owner of the watch. It becomes a T2 watch since it brings her back to 2008. So there are 2 iterations of Im Sol, one day apart. And there are 2 iterations of the watch that co-exist! This is a strange logic where the T1 Im Sol who fangirled Tae Sung is suddenly replaced by the T2 Im Sol who wants to save SJ. But the watch does not replace itself!!

The question now is what is happening to T1 Im Sol when T2 Im Sol replaces her?

(Again I go back to Someday or One Day and think how the replaced soul is trapped somewhere in the person, unable to make herself heard).

Are our minds reeling a bit or a lot? 😅🙃🤪🧐 Don’t we love it? 🤔🙄🤭

  24. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Fern, I’m with you about the heavily scripted ‘reality’ or ‘live shows’. Shows cannot leave too much too chance or important events out of their control. It’s not likely that he’d have called IS coincidentally.

Yes, to how their ‘apparent ages’ vs ‘age-in-truth’ were reversed. Despite how they looked or how they were the same age, they met each other in opposite ‘ages-in-truth’ which was how old they were in their minds and experiences.

I believe it was the 2008 scene of how she misinterpreted that they were dead and crossing the bridge to the Underworld that totally sold the show for me. I laughed so hard and I also became convinced that this show would be well executed til the end resolution.

Thank you for all the meanings of the names. They are well-watered trees indeed in this Show! And they give shelter to each other as trees do.

  25. @GB yes reeling🥺

  26. I have to say that I am so happy to read comments by so many of my favourite posters in the threads about this drama. Icing on the drama cake, right?

  27. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Yes, indeed @Fern! It’s great that so many friends are gathered here. There will be a generation of more interesting thoughts about this Show!

  28. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@Arihsi, I also feel that time will not flow linearly. Now that the watch is in her possession again, I wonder if she has the power to time jump at will, or whether some elements have to align. Will her emotions have to be strong, and a wish made while the button on the watch is pressed?

And might there be an interesting twist that she jumps not back to 2023 but to 2024 instead!

This Show is tagged as a comedy, romance, fantasy, and so I wonder if it will go into any depth exploring the stresses and hardship of the idol life that causes many to be depressed and some to kill themselves. It would be a good feat if Show could do this at some deeper level, and still be a comedy.

You mention that IM avoids the reasons why he was depressed by focusing on getting him to not compete so that he could continue swimming instead of becoming an idol. Well at that stage, in her 34 yo mind, she probably knows of the general reasons why idols commit suicide, but 19 yo SJ was nowhere near being an idol yet, and so she could not discover his own particular challenges yet. It was reasonable for her to be protective up to the degree that she could know or hope to control events. Yes, it is so much more difficult when she cannot have SJ on the same page as herself, because she cannot tell him his future. Perhaps it will be only in future time jumps that she will be given insights as to why he was depressed.

Taking a leaf from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I agree that using something supernatural to bring about an end that suits oneself means that there’s compensation to be made. There’s generally a law of balance and give-and-take. What payment she has to make remains to be seen.

  29. When Im Sol ran to Sun Jae after the swimming competition, I felt that he was already under stress – between trying to please his father, coach, team, and his own competitive nature vs his injury which was clearly still paining him. It reminded me of some parents I came across when my daughter was in track and field competitions. Another reason I felt this was the actor’s expression when IS clutched onto him and said she was sorry he had been suffering alone. He didn’t act surprised as though she were crazy, but rather as though here finally was someone who understood something about his interior feelings. Also ‘Finally she has noticed me, 😉.’ If her statement were far from true, I think he would have looked more disturbed or disbelieving. Just my own thoughts.

Later when he catches her with his swim uniform it’s clear that he thinks she is trying to mess him up or is somehow deluded. “Why do you need to protect me?” he asks. She can’t answer in a way that will get through to him. In his anger, AJ says her actions are abnormal and weird. But when he gets the phone call from his chingu that the other boys were going to mess with his stuff at the pool, he realises that she told the truth. He see both of their umbrellas in the stand outside their homes, so runs to catch up with her.

Well only 3 days until the next episode airs. I’ll have to wait to see if this becomes more evident or if it’s just my imagination.

  30. It’s so great to read many posts and BODers swarming this kdrama! Kumawo! I have to rewatch the episodes this weekend to keep up. Hehehe.

Do we have enough info to understand how the time travel happened and under what conditions? IS accidentally pressed a button on the watch while in school and nothing happened. These are the things I will look out for in the rewatch.

The other time slip drama (or so we thought) that had a watch was “The Light in Your Eyes”, it was a beautiful story albeit a sad one. I hope this one will not be that sad but will still be a compelling story.

  31. Oh what another lovely thread – I tried to write lively but my phone corrected it. The phone knows!

Love all the analysis of “runner” in the title.

I m one of those who resisted the notion of a suicide because I don’t think a kdrama would deal with a suicide in this manner especially involving an idol given the very sad history in the industry. I posited two theories – murder or passing out over the ledge from too many drugs. From later comments from readers of the webtoon/novel – it sounds like it is the latter. Of course there is still the possibility that there is a bad actor either prescribing the medicine or swapping out the pills. We will see. Regardless mental health will be a big theme it seems.

I like that the time travel forces one to really sit back and analyze what is happening. I’m still confused if he fell in love with IM 1.0 or IM 2.0 like in Some Day Or One Day.

Thank you @packmule3 for another great read!

  32. @Fern and @GB sooo happy to have all of us gathered here at the party! Even @nrllee has joined us this time !

@Cleo yes, it is tragic and I think that is exactly what the writer wants. The writer wants you to stand with Sun Jae because he’s been dealt such an unfair hand. The writer wants us to root for him much like the two of us are doing now 😁

@Fern yes, I think he’s already on the path to self destruction. That’s why the watch chose that time, probably? Otherwise why 15 years ? It’s a long arse time but it is THE TIME.

It is the time when he fell in love with her (not future Im Sol. Future Im Sol reciprocated his affection but he had already fallen for a non-time traveller, original Im Sol by that time).

It is the time he looses his ability to swim. It is probably also the time his father stops supporting him. It is his first big failure and he’s alone in it.

It is the time the original Im Sol met with an accident that he could have been involved in somehow. There are some on the internet who say SJ’s father caused the accident (this has NOTHING to do with the webtoon. The Im Sol of webtoon didn’t meet any accident). This is a pure speculation that some on the internet have.

It is clear that IS accident had a profound negetive impact on SJ. Otherwise, what was stopping him from declaring his feelings? Something stopped him from even revealing to her that he’s the one who saved her.

It could be his second step or shall I say big leap towards a dark mental space. The watch knows this timeline even if Im Sol does not.

So the watch sends Im Sol bounding towards him on the SECOND he began his journey to the bottom. She holds on to him. Once at the pool, then one more time at the bridge. Though she doesn’t yet know the whys, she’s determined to not let him sink. ❤️

  33. @Good Twin… Ooooo… Pill swap ! An interesting proposition. They give multiple un-missable shots of alcohol+pills so I’m certain that they are the cause. But a pill swap could mean a non-violent murder. It also makes it possible that the incessant door bell is Im Sol trying to prevent him from falling over.

She could also get EMTs in advance. There is a famous thriller by the name “Marker” from Robin Cook. No time travel there but the hero discovers JUST IN TIME why they were unable to revive previous victims with defibrillators (the shock thingy to restart the heart). With his knowledge , he takes a different route to save the heroine and succeeds.

Thus, if Im Sol knows why he passed out and on what pills he overdosed, she can either arrive in time to stop him or arrive with EMTs and they can make better decisions which eventually lead to his survival. Can I kdrama go this why ? Hee hee. Who knows. But definitely it will be Im Sol’s knowledge of events (which the watch wants her to have) that will be pivotal.

She will most likely succeed. Because if she doesn’t, the whole drama will be pointless, isn’t it ? The whole drama is the story of how she’d eventually succeed in preventing his death.

  34. With this 15 year gap, I feel it wasn’t a murder. The watch wants Im Sol to “change the trajectory of his life”, not prevent murder. If it was just a murder, the watch would have sent her outside his room only some 3 hours back. Or even on the bridge again. Easier right ?

But I don’t think it’s a murder. It’s a SERIES of unfortunate events that he dealt with ALONE. Each of these events sank him a little more towards the bottom. The watch wants her to be his buoy.

  35. @Arihsi, I feel that you are on the right track. He looked very happy to be part of the boy band in 2009. By 2022 he looked drained by years of stress.

Another gap in the performance times for Eclipse, besides Covid, could have been military enlistment, since all are in their 30s in 2002.

I’m just thinking about some rl groups who all join at the same time (eg The Rose), but in others, each member joins when they can no longer delay enlistment. EXO for example. They started enlistment in May 2019 and the youngest member enlisted last September, so won’t be free until December 2025 (2 years because he’s a social service worker). Of course, if SJ had a very bad shoulder injury, it’s possible that he was exempted from active military service and could have been directed to do other jobs by his company, acting, modeling, whatever. We’ll see if this was the case. –Just possibilities running through my brain.

As to murder, suicide or death by misadventure – I don’t know. Sometimes severely depressed people just do careless things. Their actions don’t follow logic except for their wish to make things feel better for themselves. So he might have combined drugs and alcohol heedlessly without actually meaning to take his own life.

  36. That’s the way the webtoon goes too @Fern. He didn’t plan to die. He planned to retire. But he was in so much mental stress, confusion fueled by exhaustion ( they make this clear in scenes pre-concert) and long term depression that he doesn’t notice what all he pops into his mouth. He just wanted an out from all the pain and it went wrong.

The scene in link below is right before his death, post bridge scene after concert. He goes to see her and watches her quietly from afar.

Does that fuel his sense of pain and loss ? Probably. @Cleo is going to be very sympathetic.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C5n8-Q6pjx-/?igsh=Z3RnNWpjanBnaWxj

  37. Something I noticed on rewatch is that he has 3 small scars on his left shoulder.I believe. It is mentioned that he has already had surgery for his shoulder And should not be swimming competitively For a period of time… Why on earth his coach is letting him compete is beyond me.

  38. @fern I had the same thoughts When she was clutching on to him by the swimming pool. She was speaking about the future idol SJ But he was hearing it as her referring to his emotional and physical pain related to his shoulder injury. Perhaps there are other yet.Undisclosed only hinted at reasons for his emotional pain, Possibly related to the pressure from his father. And where is his mother?

  39. @Good twin Does your phone know just the way those watches know?😁

  40. @fern Interesting.
Point about the dynamics of these boy groups when military service time rolls around. Also applies to kdrama couples. The cracks
Begin to show. I posted in another thread about BTS And how they seem to be managing this proactively. I am really enjoying some of their solo music and some of the music they are doing with other artists.

  41. @Packmule I am thinking that the scene where he is running beside the bus is a metaphor for the Two of them traveling in parallel and in different time lines.

  42. Good catch about the parallel running, @monmor. Here I was just thinking how darned good looking he is just then. 🤦‍♀️

  43. About the color yellow. It is the color of hope. Perhaps SJ Was already feeling some despair when she bounded into his life in a haze of yellow. She was.
Wearing a muted yellow scarf when they encounter each other on the bridge in 2022.

  44. Omg @Monmor ! Lord protect us all, where is his mother? The absence of a loving maternal figure is THE no1 reason behind emotional trauma in kdramas (sadly enough, maybe in real life too.). It totally skipped my attention.

Another thing which skipped my attention is the mention that he should skip swimming competitively. I did notice the scars though. Even in the entry sequence , he’s moving his hand as if shaking water out of it. A movement too familiar to those with shoulder/arm pain – as in an attempt to loosen the muscles and reduce pain.

Forget the coach, why is the father allowing it ? And pushing him over that ? It seems the rival is more concerned… “You won’t be in a position to lift even a spoon” he says. He’s annoying, but he’s right.

Another thing I wanted to agree with you @monmor both on earlier thread and here is, 1) the voyeuristic nature of CPR by the pool in the video and 2) the graphic representation of the failed attempts to revive him. – it achieved what was aimed. We the audience were fully immersed in the tragedy of his passing. Even upon my re-watch, it gave me goose bumps.

  45. Something I am confused about. Has to do with the call from the radio station.

What does SJ know About her health at that point. If he is T2 SJ Then he would not know about her being in a wheelchair because that is T1 IS.

  46. @arihsi I noticed him shaking out his hand as well in that walk towards their concert. I think it was the wrong hand though. I am chalking that up to a consistency Error.

@fern I don’t know who it was.Who joked about how could we as K drama fanatics not have been aware of this man,Following up from IS ‘s Similar comment about him in high school. I get a good chuckle every time.I think of that.

  47. @monmor a beautiful observation about the colour and associated emotions.

My child has a book on emotions called “The colour monster”. It’s almost a standard textbook for preschool children.

In that book, Yellow 🟡 represents happiness like you mentioned. How beautiful that IS the yellow…

Blue 🔵 represents sadness. When SJ first meets IS on a rainy day, she carries a yellow umbrella but he wears a blue cap. He also carries a blue umbrella. Blue tears are depicted falling into a deep blue lake in the book. Much like how our ML swims. And at the time he dies, he’s wearing a blue shirt.

Undisclosed pains as you note @monmor ? In preview of ep 3, he is sobbing in the locker room.

The colour black ⚫ in the book indicates fear and pain. He wears black after the concert. He wears the same when he goes to see her one last time.

  48. @Arihsi Did I miss something? When he goes to see her the last time?

I have always thought of blue representing calm but representing sadness fits here. The sunflowers growing outside her home are notable.

  49. Personally, I can’t equate SJ’s umbrella shade of blue with sadness because it is so vivid, like a blue sky. I thought it matched well with her sunny yellow umbrella. 🌅 (I think I must be a Blue-o-phile.)

But I do understand the usefulness of a book like your daughter’s for preschool children, to help them express their emotions when they may not yet have acquired the vocabulary. A school I worked for had things like emoticons for children to indicate to the teacher how they were feeling and it was useful for most children in the early years groups and for some older children who had less verbal ability.

  50. Hee hee @Fern… I don’t think much in a way of colours either. But if there is a whole book about it, something must be said.

What I do agree with you on is watching the immensely hansome Byeon Wooseok running beside the bus with his hair flowing. I couldn’t think of any parallels even after re-watching the scene 3x… Tee hee hee.

  51. @monmor, yes to the comments about IS failing to notice someone like SJ in high school. Even if they were in separate school buildings, there would have been a lot of talk about someone so good looking. His height alone would have made him seem remarkable and he was a sports star as well – so he was a triple threat as far as standing out from the crowd.

Now I had better shut up or @packmule will send me to Shallow Island. 🏝️

  52. @fern I am a blueophile- the more shades the better.

angry ocean blue is very different from sky blue or robins egg blue or blue-gray armour!

I noticed one of the posters of the utube music videos for this drama calls herself blue sunflower. The blue umbrella did look something like that in the aerial view.

  53. @Arihsi, only 3 times?

  54. Yes, it was like a promising little bit of blue sky that you see sometimes see peeking out from among grey clouds.

  55. @fern arihsi 😂

I noticed that she just comes up to his lovely guilty collar bone

  56. Shhh @fern… How can I say more than 3x ? @pm3 will banish us for talking too much about the physical appearance of the male lead. 🤭🤭😛

  57. Ladies and spl note @monmor

After evaluating multiple scenes, I’ve decided that BOTH his shoulders are hurt. I know this sounds crazy but they can’t be THIS inconsistent. The actor will remember which side he wore the brace, the make up artist will remember which side he/she made the scar marks and given he’s shirtless most of the times (spl note @Fern 😛), his co-actors will also remember the scar side and the side of shoulder that he held in pain. They can’t ALL forget!

His surgery side is left. Scars on left side. He clutches it in pain time stamp 32.39 minutes in Episode 2.

He will hurt it badly again eventually.

    Time stamp 3.04 minutes here

    https://youtu.be/aZ9I0t39Qqg?si=j0dQEh2PkdIMlHO3

However, in the swimming pool entry post time travel timestamp 7.34 minutes Ep 1

    He shakes his right hand.

Anand in preview of Ep 3, he’s wearing a relatively lighter brace on RIGHT hand. It doesn’t look so damaged as left in above video.

When he cradles Im Sol on his remaining shoulder (can’t say good), he remarks, It’s a relief one of them (his shoulders) are still functional. It’s a very sweet moment.

    Time stamp 0.59 here

    https://youtu.be/hJW-rhN5qqA?si=baT-vPkvDC0ZZYfZ

Thus I rest my conclusion. None of his shoulders are really okay no matter how broad or handsome looking.

  58. Ok everyone, disregard the above comment for now. Upon further research, it was identified that sometimes people FLIP the video while uploading on YouTube. Thus, the sides can be mirror image of the original. 🙄

I’ll collect more data on Monday and revert on this.

  59. Dear @Arihsi, I trust you to review the data and submit. I’ll have a look, too. What I remember is the first time we see the brace in episode 1, he was facing us and putting it onto the shoulder on our right/his left. I am watching on Viki.

Medically an injury on one side sometimes contributes to or begins an injury on the opposite side because the patient is compensating with the less injured side.

I was thinking of you when I started reading an article from the Guardian newspaper nearly 2 weeks ago about brain activity at the time of death or near death. This made me think of what might be happening to IS when she is in the icy stream probably experiencing hypothermia. The article might be an interesting read if one isn’t convinced of time travel or teleportation, but might want a more scientific explanation of imagery reported from people who have recovered from near-death experiences. Clearly the research is theoretical and still ongoing.

    https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/02/new-science-of-death-brain-activity-consciousness-near-death-experience#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAs%20she%20died%2C%20Patient%20One's,including%20heightened%20attention%20and%20memory.

  60. But please ignore the article which strongly puts forth a preference for scientific proof of the phenomenon and could be seen as anti-spiritual in some ways.

@Arihsi, the time stamp for the appearance of the brace in episode 1 is about 52.45.

  61. I meant, please ignore it if you wish.

  62. I haven’t had time to scour through the comments so I might be repeating what someone has already pointed out. Apologies.

SJ changed the trajectory for IS in Ep1 didn’t he? She had picked up the glass shard and well, we all know what she was intending to do with it given her state of mind. That phone call was what turned her around? If we surmise that he went back in time to prevent her from suicide, it stands to reason that she could do the same for him as the drama unfolds. It’s just how she does it I guess. Her attempts to stop him from competing with the recuperating shoulder could mean he never encounters a career (swimming) ending injury and therefore continues to swim and avoids the idol life altogether. But is it just the idol life that is to blame? He could feel just as alone in competitive swimming? It’s his state of mind that needs to change. How he handles stress and pressure and finds relief valves and his sense of self worth is what matters in the long run. IS’s choices and how she opts to view various obstacles and circumstances in her life post accident is what “saves” her from sinking into the darkest pit of despair. She chose to “look on the bright side” despite all the misfortunes that were thrust in her path on the day of the concert. SJ wasn’t there personally to help her navigate those. He may have been that initial stimulus during her toughest time but she needed the mind shift herself to future proof her mind against life’s hurdles. I guess that’s another way of looking at the eclipse. The shift from light to total darkness and then imperceptibly it gets brighter on the other side. The darkness may seem indeterminably long when you’re in it but hanging on to those little glimmers of sunlight is what slowly but surely brings you back into the light. If it is true that the full duration of an eclipse (from where a shadow appears to when the shadow disappears) is about 2-3hrs, and the duration of “complete darkness” is but 4minutes or so, you could argue that when you look at the totality of your life and all its bright spots, the darkness in it is but a fraction. Sometimes it’s just a matter of waiting (like what SJ suggested in the phone call) and hanging in there till you see the Sun in its glorious splendor in full again🌞🌕🌔🌓🌒🌑🌘🌗🌖🌕🌞

  63. @ARIHSI Fern In the preview For episode 3 the brace crosses from 1 arm to the other. So it is on his right shoulder but it is supporting the left arm so indirectly supporting His left shoulder. I had to rewind a few times to see it clearly because it happened really quickly.

Hi @nrllee, thanks for all your insights in your previous and this comment. Great thoughts, as always!

I like your take on how the eclipse can be viewed as how we can go through the dark patches in our lives, knowing that with the right mindset, we can hold on and persevere until the light reappears. Total darkness lasts indeed only a fraction of the time of our lives. There is so much light to look forward to.

Yes, SJ’s phone call changed IS’s trajectory from self-destruction to a will to live and somehow, she developed a very positive attitude of seeing adversity in a good light. It kept her going for 15 years.

We have not been shown enough of SJ’s experiences to know what he is facing and whether he has a self-sustainable attitude that was undermined or whether he was pretty negative and slipped into depression. Yes it is as you say: “It’s his state of mind that needs to change. How he handles stress and pressure and finds relief valves and his sense of self worth is what matters in the long run.”

I do expect this couple to be mutual saviours for each other more than once. I like how they have multiple opportunities to run towards or for each other and shelter each other.

    😃😌😘🙂

  65. @nrllee a wonderful and very relevant point that wasn’t raised before and it’s a subject I did my thesis on.

Allow me to add my two cents please.

There is a concept in research on Depression called Resilience. It refers to one’s ability to mentally take on adverse experiences and emerge unscathed from them.

Resilience and frustration tolerance is what we see here from Im Sol. She looses her ability to walk, her dream, multiple rejections for a job, her grandma is senile, she has no partener annnd she couldn’t see her favourite idol perform, her phone broke and her wheelchair gave up in the middle of a bridge on a snowy day. She STILL enjoys his performance from outside. She still manages to compliment him and go on.

She took multiple major hits and still survived. SJ sure encouraged her on radio but it was I’m Sol’s resilience that saved her.

Now, there are known factors that affect this relience. Interestingly, lots of research to suggest that maternal seperation greatly affects offspring’s ability to take on hits later in life. So do major life events like loss of a partner/child, major illness, food insecurity, wars, divorce etc.

There is a certain genetic component to innate resilience. However, adverse childhood experiences along with maternal seperation are leading in affecting this ability. Again, @monmor where is his mother?

The next concept is of x hits. How much does it take to break one ? This will in turn depend on reliance. Im Sol has taken a LOT and not broken, yet. Sometimes, a hit can be the last straw on the camel’s back. Probably Sun Jae’s death for Im Sol here. But she’s incredibly resilient. The show establishes in Ep 1 itself that she’s suffered a lot and still manages to enjoy the sunshine.

    Contd..

  66. Now in contrast, we look at Sun Jae. Like @nrllee so aptly notes, would he really be better off in competitive swimming as compared to being a singer ? We doubt. Because it hasn’t got to do with his profession but rather his mindset – and the support he has (or the lack thereof). In the preview of ep 3, he’s sobbing alone in the locker room of the aquatic centre. He isn’t an idol then ! No rabid fans have come after him yet !

In a voice over in the preview

    https://youtu.be/aZ9I0t39Qqg?si=akjA2z9j-xsnpt8B

time stamp 3.06 minutes he says

“I feel embarrassed and uncomfortable because I feel like all my frustrations and dispair have been discovered.”

    Possibly by Im Sol.

Thus, I have said this before but I feel Im Sol’s task is “herculean” because it isn’t as simple as encouraging him or dragging him away from an oncoming vehicle. It is a SERIES of hits that he couldn’t take. So even if the ultimate result was death due to foul play or inadvertent misadventure as @Fern puts it, he still had depression, was exhausted, unhappy and couldn’t take care of himself. Sol must change THIS trajectory.

Thanks once again @nrllee for highlighting this.

    Fin.

Thanks @Arihsi, you made the point very well indeed!

  68. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Check out this Chemistry Workshop for Elle Korea. Our OTP are so cute together. Watch til the bloopers at the end. I feel their natural chemistry is real and they make good friends.

  69. @nrllee, beautifully written. 💖

@Arihsi, yes, I have read a lot about Resilience whilst looking into depression related to adoption. You can imagine that there is a lot of work happening in that area. Good points.

And yes, Im Sol may be inadvertently bringing some of Sun Jae’s problems out into the open with consequences that she didn’t imagine while trying to help. She keeps saying that he’s getting further away from her and that may be the case ultimately.

@Growing Beautifully, I agree with the couple being mutual saviours. The self-destructive thoughts on both sides reminds me a bit of Romeo and Juliet.

  70. @Monmor, that makes sense. It’s more of a support rather than a brace in that case. It would go on the healthier shoulder to support the weaker side. Thanks for your observations.

  71. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

Hi @Fern, what a coincidence. Episode 11 of Queen of Tears had Hae In’s Secretary Na calling HI ‘Juliet’ (I guess because of social media comments that she’s dying while being in love). And there was a sweet Romeo doting on Juliet scene LOL.

So even Lovely Runner gives us thoughts of Romeo & Juliet at this same time. How quaint!

  72. By the way people…. So cool to see Mr. Park Tae Hwan in ep 1. He is the first SK Olympic gold medalist in swimming and world champion. He has four Olympic medals, five world titles, and 20 Asian Games medals.

Very interestingly, he won at the at the 2008 Olympics so the drama has done it’s homework!

As a bonus, he’s very good looking too. No wonder the staff thought Im Sol was going to attack him. The staff were so funny when all of them stood before him in protection. 🤭

It must’ve been an honour for the actors to share a swimming session with him.

  73. @arihsi I did not understand why the staff were blocking her sideways rather than in front of her. Thank you for the insight.

You probably noted that the aquatic center was named after this olympic swimmer.

  74. I saw Park Tae Hwan’s name in the cast list playing himself, so had a look last week. He hasn’t always had an easy time in his sporting career according to Wikipedia and other articles. His presence does give an air of authenticity to the era being shown.

  75. I am really hoping that this drama will explore celebrity suicide During the episodes that will likely be in the future/present. The setup is so there that it will feel like they are avoiding the subject if it is not explored.

An article I read after a recent k.Pop suicide really drove home for me One of the reasons why this happens in korea. These idols are tasked with representing their country worldwide. It is like an extension of confucian loyalty to parents.

Because of korea’s history, Soft Diplomacy
Has become an important way of asserting the country’s position on the world stage. It has certainly worked As we can testify to.

Perhaps there is more depression in south korea. I think a more important factor probably is the lack of recognition And the shame in Admitting to it and getting treatment.

It is of note in this drama that he was getting treatment So I imagine his Manager would have known that.

@arihsi In the research you have studied is there evidence That parental expectations set high contribute to risk of suicide In offspring. Might be difficult to tease out from lack of parental support.

@nrlee I also appreciated your metaphor of the eclipse and how to survive dark times

  76. This show is amazing. There is always something new to find the production quality is out of this world. The songs he sings are wonderful. But then Other music I think mostly from the two thousands I am also enjoying.

What precipitated this excited comment is that I noticed on the cover of a magazine. She picks up in her room in the past Looks like it features the CN blue actor Who starred in “you’re beautiful”. The producer/directorI think of that drama is the same in this drama. I do need to double check this but I think i’m correct.

Your beautiful was one of my most frequently rewatched dramas when I first started watching about five years ago.

  77. Oh another point about where her money comes from. It looks like her brother has good job and lives with Them.

  78. I guess Her brother’s life was also derailled. It does not look like he currently is an actor.

  79. @Monmor lots and lots of data on suicide rates amongst youth and social factors/ race / ethnicity/cultural pressure. SK has one of the worst rates across the world. Their fertility rates are also the least across the world.

About where her money comes from, she works as a YouTube video editor. Her dream is to work as an actual movie editor but her disability is a big obstacle. In Ep 1, the employer liked her work but said, “this building has no lift.”. She can afford expensive Eclipse merchandise because she earns herself along with her brother and mother.

  80. GrowingBeautifully (GB)

@MM, did you really manage to catch the picture on the magazine? I couldn’t tell what was on the cover. The CN Blue singer-actor is Jung Yong Hwa. I’ve watched him a couple of shows.

I did watch You’re Beautiful aeons ago. Never felt the desire to rewatch but I did like it well enough at that time. I probably preferred him in The Three Musketeers. I also watched Sell Your Haunted House and The Package in which he played a main role. He always struck me as a ‘nice’ guy. 🙂

  81. Thank you again for the write ups, BODers!!!

Here are my notes from rewatching. Pardon me if I may be saying something that was already mentioned by others.

    Animated intro.
The watch showed initially 2024 (why 2024 when the present that was shown when SJ died was Jan 1, 2023… then does this mean there’s another time travel from 2024?) before doing a countdown to 2008. Assuming this is the first time slip, she went back to June 2008.

I did not realize she traveled almost a year back to the first scene with eclipse (July 22, 2009) and radio show. She kept saying June 2008 was before her accident but that’s a long time gap – either she was in a long coma or the accident that caused her disability happened in 2009. It may be different from the ep2 street crossing that SJ saved her from. There was a memory flashback when that happened. She was wearing a uniform, gash on her cheek (similar to how she looked in the hospital flashback). Note that on ep1 radio show call, she did not have a gash anymore.

Yellow is her favorite color. Her mom said to paint her toenails with her favorite color yellow.

There seems to be guilt on SJ’s face when she said “A gift? can you make me walk again? That’s what I want. If you can’t do that, why call me for nothing?” So that’s why he never contacted her after that? Maybe his dad was involved in the accident?

    Javan HS yearbook 2009.

Basic instinct was overdue for a month so SJ started liking her then (May 2, 2008).

    SJ POV end of ep2:
He also thought he was dreaming when she hugged him by the pool. She thought she was dreaming, too hence she was so bold in declaring her love to him.

Thanks for the tidbit on the Korean Olympic swimmer. 2008 was Olympic year so they were probably doing some hush-hush practice against other swimmers. Wow, that swimmer still looks so fit after all these years!

  82. @GB I thought on first view that it was him and then rewound and checked a few times. When I read online, that 1 of the directors is the same as the director for “your beautiful”.Then I thought there was more likelihood I was right.

I enjoyed “the package” but did not Watch the others you mentioned.

  83. @janey I did not catch that 2024 reference. I wonder how that fits into the show.

There is a missing piece in our understanding of the radio exchange. If he is 1.1sj Then he would not know she had lost her ability to walk unless the time he rescued her At the end of episode two was not the time of the first accident And there is another Accident yet to happen. If he is s j one then that is even more confusing but I guess that could be the case. Then he would Likely no about her accident and perhaps have played a role in it. Maybe the s j’s we see In this scene and in the snowy scene on the bridge before he commits suicide are two different versions.

  84. Is ther scene where he is watching her in the drama somewhere. I did not see it yet.
