Thank you for an early thread @pkml3. We’d love it if you joined us here!!!

😂😂 But but but I must complete the whole season first (not just the episode) before I can do a RE-watch, @GB! 😂😂
To be honest with you, that’s one of my hurdles from joining the rewatches: my obsessive-compulsive-ness.
LOL @pkml3. I thought you might have watched Pinocchio before, but just didn’t bother to write about it then. 😆
I hope our watched shows align a bit more!!!
I watched a few episodes here and there of Pinocchio to stitch together the main story. But for a rewatch, I’d have to actually sit down, pay attention and take down notes. 😂😂
It’s Labor Day weekend here and family’s getting together at the beach house. But since I already stocked up on the supplies (burgers, buns, steak, soda, beer, wine, toilet paper!! etc. 😮💨) from Costco last week, we don’t have to drive down till this evening. I can watch a few more episodes of “Pull Strings.” Strangely enough, I’m laughing at the comical antics of the male lead and getting the allusions to the modern day life in this Xianxia. But then, I’m only at Ep 4. I may drop this soon when the plot becomes too complicated.
@Pm3, oh you want do it seriously. But you can relax too! I watched in 2018, and I know I would need to rewatch before the rewatch party. But I didn’t have time. So it’s like I watch for the first time, almost. I’m even stuck at Ep3 of “what happened in Bali”, my current kdrama. No progress since last week. T T
This week I did something I was thinking during months, but never had time or solution. There is only one episode of W2 that the only two readers giving me comments said for sure that the episode wasn’t good (Episode 15). But the reasons were unclear and I knew they maybe missed the real reason. For example, a reader points at background scenes, but the scenes were good as standalone (I mean, you can enjoy them, even if you know nothing about the drama). So, deleting them could cause more harm, when there are needed later, or developping characters.
There were two montages unclear, kind of thing you get tired when reading it. I was thinking it was a problem amplifying a lot the disappointement, kind of “I’m fed up”. I fixed the small montage, and just destroyed the big one, putting away some of the content in a linear way, deleting a bit, and I had to put some as first scene of episode. Then I got the “EUREKA” moment, understanding fully why the episode didn’t work. It wasn’t the scenes, it was the lack of direction and the fact it didn’t fullfill audience expectation.
It’s a risky episode where there is only one dramatic question at this stage of the drama (while there are often more than one most of the time). So the story was hanging by a thread, and the episode didn’t adress that first, frustrating audience. It adresses it, but only later in the episode, far too late, giving the feeling we first get scenes without connexion and without knowing where we go. The problem was even worst, after a previous episode where a large part is background (second half is “bottle” episode). So I needed to reconnect fast and first about what the audience care about.
As I was working on that, I also made few pictures (Ep 14 to 27 lack pictures) and did this wonderfull one, becoming almost a fashion designer! 😅
https://w4worlds.fr/images/Ep15/IMG_15_MiRaStreet.jpg
I couldn’t find the right pictures on internet, because gothic outfits are often too fantaisist when I wanted a feeling of “gothic but with very high class”, expensive and a bit provocative. So I had to create that in several steps, element by element.
I started W2 long before “ok not to be ok”, and I said here (you probably don’t remember) that FL of ONTBO had a little something of my character, first they are both writing stories (but mine is mostly a good artist at drawing). However, the design feels really different in the end (and I had the black lipstick in my mind from the start), and probably there isn’t a female character looking like that in any drama. Plus, personnalities are different, ONTBO FL is quite cold, what isn’t the case of my character. Seo Yea-ji couldn’t play the role, but here it’s Kim Tae Hee, and it’s perfect!
Good Evening @GB,
I apologize for missing last week’s session.
I am reading your comments for 9 and then will get going on pre/rewatch of 10.
Hi @IB, no need to apologise … I was wondering if you were called away or were ill, or whether I’d missed your message saying that you’d be busy. But it’s all good. I saw that you were commenting this week so I knew you were okay.
If I disappear it will be because I fell asleep!!! Heheheh!
Sssshh..was using borrowed painkillers for a dental abscess, had no idea if it was day or night for a week plus)
Poor dear! I trust all’s well now!!
Hi @IB and @WE, it’s time to start NOW!!!
We ended last week when IH is devastated to discover that the mother she’d idolised had been a heartless and cruel person to DP, whom she cared about. I pity IH,… just as she was so hopeful about becoming a bit closer to her mum…
Hi GB & IF !!
Hi @WE, just finished rewatch of 10!
@GB, at least DP could feel sorry for having being mean with her when they was child.
Then she says biané (sorry), but what can she do? It’s her mother, not her.
I really like the way it’s been set up so that while DP is agonising over the atrocities his brother likely committed and over investigating and revealing this like a good reporter/citizen, … IH is devastated by the inhumanity of her mother.
They can actually share in and understand each other’s agony.
@WE, the sorry that she’s saying is more from a sense of second hand guilt, humiliation and the knowledge that her mother owes DP that apology. She is apologising on mum’s behalf.
His long story was resumed by a two lines voice-over. 😀
Wooh! we didn’t have the full recap live. LOL.
This is a long scene — then we ease into a great series of absurdities mingled with the same serious plotlines. First up, how does DP/HM keep the family quiet? Its her time of the month! So embarassing. How does the writer keep us from being derailed? (
Poor girl can’t even keep a secret because she’s a pinocchio. I like DP’s way of getting her dad and grandpa to not ask her anything.
@IB then there’s the terrible matter of getting money for the TV. Grandpa has no shame in committing theft over and over again. It took DP so long to figure out where the money came from.
Then dad sees them walking hand-in-hand but also that IH looks happy to be with DP.
@GB, grandpa commit theft??
Oh, I missed something previously??!
Damn, I’m already late.
At the moment DP pretend she has period of the month.
@IB and now we have the opposite behaviour of IH when she sees her mother. Song Cha Ok of course will get the reason for it out of her assistant.
@WE, yes Grandpa has been taking the savings from DP’s piggy banks without permission and spending it. That’s still theft, although he did use the money to buy stuff for DP. But then he also took more money to get the TV for himself.
Yeah @WE, Grandpa already sliced open a few piggies, I think it was to get clothes for DP/HM for the interview. But apparently he didnt kill them all, so therewas enough to get a TV.
DP’s captain tells DP some hard truths. Hiding the truth now is only temporary. The truth will out and in the mean time he’d be stressed out watching over what he’s hiding. But as a reporter he has to be able to report the truth whether he likes it or not.
DalPo is a bit foolish to want to dissimulate, when his brother is about to commit a murder. But well, the story want it!
Now Yoo Rae is always good for some cringey laughs. Stethoscope to the door at the cop shop, and DP/HM knows the cops are onto hias brother. But then, to get bro’s contact info, YR tries to BRIBE DP with a date! (toe of foot swirls back!) Or a ‘selca’!
@WE @IB, And once again Grandpa gets caught taking from Dad’s emergency fund.
The father talk about secrets, and Grandpa thinks it’s about his thefts, LOOOOL!!
Now even Ahn Chan Soo is on Ki Jae Myung’s case but he’s not allowed to investigate. He’s got a pretty good instinct over criminals.
Just being a ‘hero’ to the public means Jae Myung becomes untouchable by the law, even when he deserves to be investigated!
So ironic that his father who was a real hero, and deserving of praise, was slandered as a careless firefighter who ran away and it was not properly investigated.
I like the tip line scene where IH is so frustrated that she cannot express herself clearly to her Mom. So later when she stands up to her in the lecture it feels like apersonal triumph.
@WE Grandpa has a lot to be guilty about.
And we have Yoon Yoo Rae still thinking DP likes her, and now is playing hard to get.
Song Cha Ok puts herself above all as if she’s never in the wrong. IH is so frustrated. I agree that when she is able to cut her mum down to size in front of the public in the lecture, it feels so satisfying.
Oh I do love Beom Jo’s Mom! (my favorite is the coming scene with IH’s Dad) But here she loses it a little after BJ confesses that he likes IH — she goes on a rant about Dp, first off “He looks like a half-baked anchovy!”
I am saving that one for a good personal moment.
Then she does the usual elite set of unsults and BJ shuts her up with such a simple line — “he makes IH laugh and cry”
@IB LOL here’s the comedy with IH’s dad’s crazy imagination. One time he fantisized that DP gave IH a toast/bread kiss and now he imagines Bum Jo’s mum getting nasty – and the music playing in this scene is from ‘I Hear Your Voice’ LOLOL. As if the Badger is going to commit a crime.
I finished the argument scene IH / Mother.
I wonder if “power of sincerity” could be the thematic of the drama, as it was with Liar Game with the FL.
Now we have the IH father and DP scene over an ice dessert. DP has to lie. IH had to tell her dad that she likes DP since she cannot lie without being found out.
“Its that Badger!” “that Badger is smiling at mw!” “that Badger is coming towards me!”
ooh, GB wonderful about the music! I truly truly believed that she threw the coffee on him! It took as long for me to compose myself as it did for IH’s Dad!
And then BJ’s Mom comes thru as always and begs on her son’s behalf. Too lovely and absurd.
The plan of the father for a rich gender is sinking, as IH told him she loves DP, and she can’t lie. HAHA!!
Well, DP has no problem to lie like hell to IH father.
Shame!!! 😀
What I thought was funny about the ice cream scene was that IH’s Dad is so upset that he slurps the melted ice cream from his bowl as if he is finishing a bowl of noodles!
A DP voice-over from the future, just to make us worried. 🙂
Ah, this little trick always work. PHR uses it, SJJ uses it, and probably other writers.
After she has to confess to her dad on the phone and is blathering on about how she will meet him the next day and explain…DP does a nice use of an office chair — he turns her around and pulls her chair over to meet his. It is an alternative to holding her arms or hands.
“the cars of my mother are in a different garage”. 😀
I missed the award on JM’s desk at the end of HP/DM’s voiceover first time around.
The elevator scene with BJ and the camera guy — feeling up his biceps is crossing a line.
And then the wonderful cars in BJ’s personal garage.
Camera guy objects to the red car then chooses a white one, which also stands out! He must have really wanted the red!
@WE so many cars and he wants to select the most eye-catching red one to use for shadowing Jae Myung.
@IB Jae Myung attends the lecture and sees that IH attacks her own mother for being too full on impact that she had ignored checking facts.
The murderer is a celebrity with his own pesky fans. He has given away his dog earlier, I think, so we know he is not coming back (from murdering IH or her Mom).
For sure, the brother can’t be a bad person, he takes care of a cute little dog. 🙂
We have the scene where IH cuts her mum down to size using DP’s words. It seems to be the knowledge and endurance of DP that gives her the courage.
It’s such a great contrast that the bosses are hiding away in the corner, not daring to tell Song Cha Ok what she is to her face but IH stands up in front of the audience to tell her mum off.
IH’s Mom recognizes Dal Po as Hae Myeung. All the secrets are coming out.
@GB, this journalist is dumb, or addict to high class living style (that he can’t live in his ordinary days).
“Fact and impact” conference is true, I’ve read an article about that, about just small % of increase in audience, about how news with negativity catch more the audience.
@WE are you referring to rich boy Bum Jo as the dumb journalist?
They are following the wrong guy. The killer is at the lecture!
I love the bosses hiding behind their turtlenecks and slouching deep into their auditorium chairs. None of them wants to insult a fellow reporter?
@WE, I am not sure if that makes them insincere. They are more detached, and the full horror of DP’s story is not recent.
@WE yes, bad and sensational news gets more audience than normal news.
@IB @WE good confrontation between the brothers. At last he has to reveal himself.
‘Pare. vs. ‘grate’? I love how technical verbs (esp. from cooking) are used in different languages. Differently because their semantic fields vary.
‘Pare’ must be a translators distant take on ‘cut down to size’?
Oh heck, I have to get out of the habit of thinking about subtitles, since we probably have different ones. Apologies you two.
A private pleasure, then.
@IB was it the case that DP hid his identity from his brother in order to keep it from IH as well to spare her the anguish … and now in order to save her and himself he has to reveal his identity to Jae Myung?
Yoo-Rae is no match for the awesome bad mother!! 😀
As I was reading tips about screenplay, there is something making audience like characters (even when they are bad): competence, people talentuous (in their job or anything). And I must admit, even if we know the mother as something unlikeable, I still like her in some way.
@IB was that in your subtitles about IH’s cutting her mum down to size?
Yes, DP is revealed to his Hyungnim.
Great, really great cliffhanger (we are at 10, so not a paired episode). Halfway thru?
@GB, not sure about DP’s motivation — it was in the crowd scene where he was tracking the cell phone of the dead man, and where they were both surprised by the cop friend seeing them. I forget what DP said to himself.
How insulting “you are the same ‘scandal’ journalist than 13 years ago”. Shit! IH words hurt like hell, even more when coming from a Pinochio, and even more when daughter to mother. GOSH.
@WE, you mean the reporters or the audience still have a soft spot for IH’s mum because she’s competent? I feel they are a bit in awe of her of her because she’s harsh and cutting, but it’s true, they respect that her reporter instincts are good, she’s successful in selling the ‘news’ and making ratings go up. So they tend to give her more rope.
@WE, yes that talk back to her mother in public was a powerful scene! We compare that to the pathetic Yoon Yoo Rae who hid her comments under coughs and who had no fact or impact in her question to Song Cha Ok… also compare/contrast her open attack to how the 4 men were hiding in the background. Sooo good.
@GB, in my Viki subtitles, Yoo Rae says to her seatmate, before she stands up that she is going to ‘pare’ the Mom. (dont remember if there is a paired word like ‘at’) The seatmate looks puzzled so she explains that she will pare (her) like a towel rubbing away dead skin.
Weird.
But that is the crossover effect. We know what she is saying but the verb sets of Korean and English dont match up exactly somewhere in the cooking/carpentry/cosmetic sets of verbs.
@IB thanks… I see. Well that was a pathetic bit of paring anyone!
@Gb, of course the other reporters, but I was talking more directly about us, audience. is the mother unlikeable? I think I still kike her.
But now we are reaching the cliffhanger…
The brother subdue IH !!
FIGHT, DP come in time.
Fight brother vs brother.
AND……. DP reveals himself
WHHHAAOOAOHHAHAHHAAA, That is a cliffhanger !!! 😀
@WE, I don’t like the character of Song Cha Ok at all.
Her competence cannot redeem her from her neglect and abandonment of her family, of putting her success / getting a sensational story above responsible investigation before reporting, editing the interview to skew the impression of the viewers to dislike Fireman Ki even more. She should really be held responsible for the hatred Ki’s wife faced.
Yes, You can say what you like about Mom but she can hold a stage and she is tough. I think the pairing of the dressing room scene… She very slowly turns and looks up at the younger reporter and then slowly turns her head back after the guy backs off and flees. And she is really beautiful in that moment. And formidable, as in French.
@GB, I don’t remember how the situation progress about the mother, but anything I could see already makes me curious.
Can she becomes a better mother (and better journalist too)??
Then the word “to like” is maybe not the right one. It’s rather “do we care about a character”. I often “like” unlikeable characters, because they create conflict, but the real thing is “I care about them”, and as audience, I like how they are unlikeable at first level.
That last was to @WE, but yes @GB, you are morally correct. My impulse is to call her a murderer at secondhand. She has no excuses to give, and doesnt want to apologize, either.
The brother is a real murderer, of 3 people so far. We see him as a man who was driven by hatred and misfortune to do the deed. He made his decisions alone w/o the benefit of family to ground him.
Family relations trump most crimes in kdrama, for lots of reasons big and small.
Well, another Saturday morning winds down to its end.
Did anyone else think those were a set of movie-western chords which accompany the four men walking abreast away from the auditorium? It must have something to do with their muffled up faces, like gunslingers with their kerchiefs up against dust or to prevent the Law from recognizing them?
As I said, absurdities.
Bye @WE and @GB, until next week…(… “until..we meet again”…)
See you next week IF, and GB too !!!
“Happy Trails To You” (until….we meet again), that was the song I was just channeling — the theme song for a western tv show of the distant past.
good god. I just looked up “Happy Trails”. That was from The Roy Rodgers Show, an iconic bit of sentimental trash, already mocked within days of its first showing.
I was thinking, during the rewatch, that except when it’s a complicated time travel drama where we need to note time exactly, I don’t take a lot of attention in day/night and how the time flows. There could even be an inconsistency, I wouldn’t notice. And then, BANG! I realized something:
The episode fixing I did (that I was speaking sooner), by removing the flashback montage, I put a scene chronologicaly incorrect, supposed to be before the one of previous episode. It’s something I had to meet a lot during rewriting, it can create plot-holes with a previous version.
So I needed a solution to fix this. Could be to put “flashback” in scene header (but it’s quite bad, audience can’t notice), or a subtitle. Instead, I added few voice-overs. Few additional lines could be bad, but here it’s better because it prepares the flow of the next voice-over. So, one stone, two birds.
