Fluttering Alert: Rewatching Episode 10

I rewatched Episode 10 is because YooJung and I are alike: we don’t give up on our Cha WooHyuns so easily.

Of course, this YooJung’s Cha WooHyun.

But this is my “Cha WooHyun,” the script.

In YooJung’s case, she was upset that she had to find out about his relationships that way.

WH: YooJung, please wait. Please listen to me for a second. The engagement announcement is ridiculous. But my relationship with the Choego Group’s chairman is true. If it was possible, I wanted to hide this until the day I died. If only I could…it’s something I wanted to erase from my memory. It wasn’t easy to tell you.

YJ: But you shouldn’t have created a situation like this. What dumbfounded me and made me angry isn’t that you hid that you were a chaebol. It’s not also because of your engagement announcement to another woman. I’m so angry and I hate that I found out about things like that in this way. I thought that I’d be okay with losing everything.

WH: I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I was going to tell you sooner. YooJung, I can’t send you alone like this.

In my version (complete with a smattering of Korean), I’m annoyed that I had to sit through flashbacks and angst-y scenes waiting for plot development.

Script: Packmule3, kajimaaaaa! Watch me for a second time, jebal. The flashbacks in Episode 10 are ridiculous, arayo. However, I have to break up the couple. If it were possible, I could have avoided this misunderstanding trope. If only I could. The flashbacks were things I wanted to erase from the script. It wasn’t easy decision to show them to you.

Packmule3: But you shouldn’t have created an episode like this. What dumbfounded me and disappointed me isn’t that you delayed the revelation. It’s not even because you had to use this misunderstanding trope. I’m angry and I’m disappointed that I had to rehash all those lovely romantic beach scenes just to waste time. I thought that I’d be okay with losing an hour waiting for nothing.

Script: Mianhe. I’m jinjja nommu nommu sorry. I was going to edit those flashbacks earlier.  Packmule3, watch me with subtitles, please! I can’t let you leave me alone like this.

Packmule3: Watch ME!

See how that fits? Hahaha.

Anyway… to be serious here now, I think this episode is about YooJung deciding whether to stick with him or not.

WooHyun had already made his decision back in Episode 8, when he read the poetry to her.

Remember this in Episode 8?

WH: I’m reading a book of poetry right now. “The wind blew. I staggered…”
YJ: “And missed the one who walked with me.” I’m not scared at all. No matter how great that chaebol daughter’s family is, she can’t destroy the life as an actress that I’ve built up piece by piece over the last ten years.
WH: Of course not. I won’t stand by and let her do that.
YJ: I may stumble because of a strong gale but you’re going to be walking with me.
WH: I won’t make you walk in the midst of a typhoon alone anymore. I’ll stand ahead of you, so walk behind me.

Prior to this, he told Unnie, “I don’t care about what I have to give up or what price I have to pay.”

But in Episode 9, YooJung wasn’t that resolute as WH.

This is her conversation with her Unnie,

YJ: I’m happy when I’m with Cha WooHyun. (asking her Unnie) No matter what I end up going through because of Cha WooHyun, whatever else I lose, if I’m fine (with losing and going through a lot), are you going to give up?
Unnie: What do you imagine that you’ll lose? How much do you think you’re going to lose?
YJ: Well, I’ve to be prepared to lose something.

Look at that: she was prepared to lose “something.” But she wasn’t expecting to lose EVERYTHING. She hadn’t thought that far ahead.

Unnie: Will you be okay not being able to act for the rest of your life? Will you be okay with not being able to do what you want because of money? Will you be okay living the rest of your life only doing what others tell you to? If you say that you’re fine with that, then I’ll give up.

YJ: Wait, no…Man. That’s not it.

See that? She hadn’t really thought this falling-in-love through…unlike WooHyun. Tsk, tsk.

Then, here in this infamous Episode 10, after she came home and thought about the mess, she admitted she was undecided. To me, the fact that she was undecided meant that she was trying to find a way to make it work with WH without giving up EVERYTHING.

Unnie: Are you going to keep on dating Cha WooHyun, even though things are like this?
YJ: (wordless)
Unnie: YooJung, I wish you’d stop dating him.
YJ: I’ll choose carefully whether or not I’ll keep dating or break up with CWH. I wish you’d stop monitoring me and talking to me like this. Please trust me and wait.

Later, while she was cleaning the room, again, she declared herself to be at a loss. She was confused as to what action she should take. Again, to me, this indicated that she was seriously thinking of the cost of keeping WH at her side. She could lose everything, including her career, lifestyle, and livelihood. Her sense of responsibility to her Unnie, company and fans must be weighing on her, too.

YJ: Unnie, I don’t know I should do.

To me, if the subs are correct, then the significant word here is “should” because it implies an obligation. She was thinking of what she SHOULD do, instead of what she WANTED to do.

Unnie: YooJung, let’s end things with CWH on a good note, that you hope that he’s happy. Let’s end things like that, okay?
YJ: (But) I don’t have the confidence to do that.

Meaning, she couldn’t bear the pain of living without him.

Thank goodness! Her conversation with her mother helped her clear up her thoughts.

YJ: You feel warm, right Mom? Mom, I’m already at your age. The fact that you left at such at a young age really hurts my heart. So, I kind of hate Dad. If Dad had just come then, you would still be alive. Right?

YJ: You forgave Dad already, didn’t you? But I can’t forgive him. He made you so sad and go through so much. You’re amazing.

Then she saw the etching on WH’s gift to her, “To a Good Person.”

I think her conversation with her mom was beneficial. She remembered that her mother had forgiven her dad. Despite making her feel sad and go through a lot, and even failing to save her from death, her mother loved her father enough to forgive him everything.

And that tied in nicely with the chair.

Like her father, WH was constantly making her feel sad and undergo a lot of pain. That chair was given to her as an apology after the first time they quarreled because he misunderstood her kindness. In his letter, he mentioned people who hurt him and a situation he couldn’t explain.

WH: I’m sorry for misunderstanding you. I can’t explain the entire situation to you. But I’ve been deeply hurt by people who use money as power and ruin other people’s lives. So if something happens that reminds me of that, I become overly sensitive. I apologize once again. Please accept my apology along with the present I sent you.

Back then, WH asked for her understanding and forgiveness because she was a good person. And this time looking at the dedication etched on the chair, she would realize that just like her mom pardoned her father for a lot of things, she too could endure a lot from WooHyun because she loved him. She was a good person, AND she was her mother’s daughter.

She could forgive him.

It must have been uncomfortable sleeping on WH’s chair but she was getting close to forgiving him again, literally and metaphorically, while sitting on his “apology chair.”

I’m sure she’ll forgive her father too sooner or later. While she couldn’t forgive him just yet, she kept his guitar to remember him. That’s like his “apology” guitar. lol.

To me, her father’s guitar was also why she suddenly remembered her ring. The guitar was her father’s but her ring was her mother’s.

She said so to WH, “I’ve kept it with me. It belonged to my mother. My mom and dad’s wedding rings to share when I find someone I like.”

She had given it to him because she liked him, but also because that night, when they were dancing, they were basically making their wedding vows to each other.

The conversation actually started at the beach when they were joking around about her getting old.

YJ: I’ll have to wane one day, too. I wonder if I can do it beautifully like the sunset.
WH: Why do you think you have to wane? You can just rise as the sun in the day and rise as the moon at night?
YJ: Just that I can’t be the twenty or thirty-something Yoon YooJung forever. Someday I’ll be someone’s mom or someone’s grandma? I’ll be a bit scary and dreadful.

I think this is cute considering that he was looking at a hanbok for a toddler girl in the market.

WH: Grandma Yoon YooJung would be more elegant and charming, I think.
YJ: Right?
WH: Yes.
YJ: Aigo. WooHyun, you’re such a charmer. Oh my! I think a grandma is a no. (suddenly turning serious) I want to ask you something and you will answer honestly, right?
WH: (nodding)
YJ: If I weren’t a star and had nothing, would you have still liked me?
WH: (pretending to be stumped for an answer) This is some troublesome question.

YJ: (pretending to be unconcerned but looking sad)
WH: (chuckling) If your heart and your gaze are the same, I’m sure I would have liked you.

Note: it didn’t matter to him if she was a star or had money. He liked her for heart (or her goodness), and her gaze (or her sincerity). This was an important question because she was thinking of giving up precisely her money and fame for him.

YJ: (smiling and changing topic) My ramen is all swollen. (then repeating herself as she inched closer to lean on him) My ramen is all swollen.

It’s in this context that we should understand his vow while they were dancing. He was picking up where they left off and giving her the serious answer to her question about liking her if she loses everything: her fame and her wealth.

That’s why he said this out of the blue –

WH: I can promise you just one thing. I will never change.

He meant that SHE could change. She could be in her thirties, forties, and grow old. She could become a mom, a grandma, and an elegant and charming grandma. She could stop being rich and famous. She could change into whoever she wanted and however she wanted. But he would remain unchanged. He would still like her.

YJ: I won’t leave you to be lonely ever.

Here, she was most likely recalling WooHyun unique habits like setting the table for two and listening to music when he was by himself to disguise the fact that he was alone and lonely. Unlike his mother who didn’t cook him meals and his father who was never a presence in his life, she was going to be there with him forever.

When we reflect on these words, the promises they made to each other are the essence of a marriage vow. When he intended to be there for her regardless of the circumstances, this parallels the “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health” of the traditional vows. And when she promised to be his companion against loneliness for the rest of their lives, this corresponds to “till death to us part.”

Thus, the mother’s wedding rings were an appropriate gift at that moment.

It’s just too bad that she failed to follow through with actions. When she got angry with him, she packed her bag and ran out on him (and I’m ignoring the added impropriety of leaving with BFF).

In real life, exiting an argument to cool off is often a good decision.

However, in YJ’s case, her sudden departure sent the wrong message to WH. He was trying to explain himself and fix the problem when she shut him down and left. In refusing to hear him out, she erected a figurative wall between them. He chased and searched for her, but she was already calling her people to pick her up.

When he found her getting in the car of BFF (of all people!), her cold look and rigid demeanor only escalated the conflict and misunderstanding between them.

The obvious message he got from her here was that she was abandoning him. And for somebody like WooHyun whose biggest emotional trigger was abandonment, her action couldn’t bode well in the future.

What she should have done was to:

1. explain that she was angry and needed TIME to calm down, and
2. reassure him that she was RETURNING.

lol. I wasn’t entirely joking about coming back after the 24/7 bakeshop, you know, in my Episode 10 fake news report….

WooHyun needed to know that she wasn’t going to reject and abandon him because of his mistake. After all, that was what she promised him less than 12 hours earlier. “I won’t leave you to be lonely forever.”

Ha!

To me, it’s interesting that he took off the ring and stored it AFTER his flashback of her angry outburst.

This suggested that he was filing the lawsuit to protect her. He once promised to stand in front of her to protect her from the wind. So although he wasn’t sure that she was still with him after storming out that night, he was fulfilling his promise.

As for YooJung, after she calmed down and worked through her emotions, she remembered that she chose him above everything else. She finally found her answer that she couldn’t give to her unnie when she was drunk.

Even if she lost something everything, she’d choose him.

So, it wasn’t surprising after she sorted out her feelings and thoughts that she went out and waited for him. (Nice product placement for that Porsche Cayenne again. lol)

Hence, I reconsidered my earlier advice to skip Episode 10 and now recommend that you watch it with subs. Watch it as a painful but necessary process for YooJung to discover where her priorities lay.

Ciao! Have a good weekend!

(I know, I know. I still have to work on the Fluttering Moments of Episode 9.)

  1. Thank you, as always, for your lovely analysis, @packmule3. Like Yoo-Jung, I took a break from Ep. 10 and sped away in my best friend’s car. But I came back and watched with subs because I’m stuck on the OTP.

Remember how Woo-Hyun applied YJ’s quip about “meaningful struggle” to her unhappy love life? Her current suffering is meaningful because she’s making life-altering adult decisions. Can she choose her life partner, forgive her father, and bare the responsibilities of her company?

My hope for the second half of the show is that friends and family rally together instead of each quietly trying to sort out problems by themselves. Show, just give me one scene with everyone strategizing in front of a glass murder board writing board. Fighting!

  2. “But this is my “Cha WooHyun,” the script.” :)))) Loved your conversation with the script

About the rings being her parents’ wedding rings … I didn’t get why the father couldn’t recognize his own ring on WH .. I kept waiting to see a reaction in him but nothing..

  3. Same here!!! When WH poured soju for him, I thought for sure the dad would say something. But nada.🤦‍♀️

Maybe he was the unobservant type? Short-sighted?

I also wondered why YJ had the set. The Dad should have kept his band or both of them. 🤷‍♀️

  4. There are 6 more episodes left.

I hope this whole lawsuit is the smoking gun WH needed to take down his Dad. But it looks all circumstantial if his star witness is just a firefighter who arrived AFTER the fire. Did he (or WH) actually see the dad start the fire? Can he connect the accelerant or any other piece of evidence found at the crime scene to his Dad, and solely to Dad? Can he account for the whereabouts of his Dad (and Stepmother lol) at the time of the fire? What about the reports of the arson investigator or police detective who worked the case?

WH needs irrefutable and direct evidence linking Dad to fire. He’s the one trying to prove arson with attempt to kill. All the defense has to do is poke holes at his allegations, raise reasonable doubt and poof! Defense rests.

But lol ….🙅‍♀️ This is one area of the show that I’m not going to overthink. Too stressful. Whatever the screenwriter decides on to quickly take down the Dad and Wannabe Wife, I’ll go along with it because I just want OTP moments.

So true! YJ is struggling with her choices because she is here for keeps. This isn’t any more a casual affair or a 🐶 puppy love like her other relationships.

It’ll also be interesting to analyze her Unnie’s decision-making process. She too has a decision to make here. How far will she go to manage YJ’s career if she thinks that YJ is rashly deciding to “throw it all away”? She seems bent on saving YJ from herself but what if YJ doesn’t want saving.

She’s a good Unnie though. So I’m not that worried about her.

  5. Thank you for this great insight. I needed it to make sense of the ring. Initially I was like wow, that’s quite a gift because it represents her parents and marriage. But it’s clear now 😊 I like how it ties it together from their conversation/promises and even ends it with a kiss, like a real wedding.

I want to see them reconcile soon. Maybe WH will convince YJ to have dinner at her Father’s restaurant.

Did you notice that YJ moved her Mom’s tree and WH’s chair inside her house?

I was planning to watch it anyway even after reading your fake news 😉 But as always weekends are always busy.

    Wednesday’s couldn’t come any faster.

Have a great weekend everyone! 🙌🏻

  6. She moved the Mom’s tree and chair inside her house. Not sure why? Maybe because it was her mom’s anniversary? Dad said something about visiting his wife bec it was her anniversary. I wasn’t really paying attention. All I thought was ✋“Good grief! You can’t visit the gravesite now. You’ll find out that he’s YJ’s dad!!!” 🤦‍♀️🙅‍♀️😂

I thought the writer should save that revelation till next week. We can only handle one angst at a time!

  7. Maybe the Dad didn’t say anything about the ring because it will reveal to WH that he is YJ’s Father.

Can I add that I like that scene where YJ said to Unni that she doesn’t have the confidence to break up with WH. That was her heart speaking there.

She slept on the chair because she misses him. 😩 We miss both of them together.

OT- so we had the wedding, we are owed a honeymoon! 😂

  8. Right? It ended like a real wedding with that kiss 💋

I thought WH looked sheepish that she was the one who brought the rings. And right before bedtime, too. Hahaha. He said he hadn’t seen THAT done in kdramas before. (I wasn’t sure if he was adlibbing. 🤪)

That’s one thing I like about this couple. YJ is more relaxed about the whole physical aspect and skinship and WH is the one worried that he’s overstepping his bounds. 😉

I really don’t know how the actor does it. (Maybe tsutsuloo can tell us. 🙂) How does he look so believably shy and innocent even though we know this isn’t his first-time acting as male lead in a romcom?? 🤔When YH asked WH to dance and he waved his hand to say no, he didn’t know the steps, WH looked totally believable there.

  9. True! True! We need the wedding NIGHT! The beach was the beginning of the honeymoon but we didn’t get the wedding night action. 😍😜

Except for that kiss. It kinda reminded me of that kiss in hmmm… Pride and Prejudice? (I always confuse these Jane Austen movies.) It had Matthew Macfayden on it. They also were sitting across from each other in front of the screen.
I don’t know. There’s something sexy about kissing while sitting on the floor. (Probably because they get “horizontal” faster? 🤨)

  10. Yes, that’s an idea. Dad didn’t want to comment on the ring until he was ready to talk about his daughter.

That crying scene with Unnie was really heartfelt. I thought YEH cried so much in this episode that her shooting all those crying scenes must have been emotionally taxing. And dehydrating. I hope she drank lots of her — what’s that water she’s promoting? Snow White water?!

  11. True! We can only handle one angst at a time ☺️ I’m sure we’ll find out why she moved it. Maybe she just wanted it at home because that’s closest to her.

It could be adlib because YEH responded with ‘yeah and you let a girl do it too’. 😁

Yes! He seems the shy/conservative one between them. I thought they were going to at least sleep on those blankets but no, they just fell asleep sitting like that. So much for quick horizontal positioning! 😂 I think we will just see them have a few more rameon! But that’s it, eating only 😂

I actually liked their flashback scenes from the market too especially where he tried to eat her sweet potato? Not sure. ☺️ Hopefully he gets to put his hand around her shoulder like a boyfriend. There’s his shyness again 😊

Oh I don’t know what’s the name of the water she’s promoting but your probably right. I think Unni is very pretty actually. I’ve never seen her before.

  12. Ok. I feel like I need to write a disclaimer every time we too get together. WE ARE NOT PERVERTS.

    There! Done!

Re that “flashback scenes from the market too especially where he tried to eat her sweet potato?” Was that a sweet potato? I thought that was some soggy dimsum-y kind of thing. .

I wish we had more market scenes with dialogue included, instead of this montage/flashback we got.

But that Ramyun scene? When she told him that her noodles were all “swollen”? 😈🤣

    Pwahahaha.

I thought that was a double-entendre. Sure, literally the noodles were over cooked so they’ve become “slimy,” soggy and mushy.

But I thought she was also referring to her feelings. She was overwhelmed by his declaration “If your heart and gaze are the same, I’m sure I’d have liked you” that she felt all mushy and gooey inside like the noodles.

And that’s why she put aside her norm and scooted over to his side and rested her head on his shoulder.

She was a limp mushy overcooked/ overwhelmed noodle who wants to canoodle. Hahaha.

  13. Blankets?

Sleeping on blankets is too logical for kdrama writers. Waking up with a crick in the neck is so much more romantic, don’t you think?

Lol. YEH responded with “Yeah and you let a girl do it too.”

Well, YH jumped the gun. She brought it with her because she wanted the commitment. It reminded me of her wanting her BF to announce their dating. She teased him too about getting married, right?

Episode 10 is good for YH’s character development. She needed to know that it’s not at all fun and games and romance. Love comes with a price, but she wasn’t even sure whether she was willing to pay the piper. 🤪

  14. I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while. This is the first kdrama I see of YEH and she’s awesome. What other dramas do you recommend of her?

  15. I just saw this episode and I really feel pity, anguish and despair. I think silences and secrets are what can destroy a relationship. What a good actress is Eun Hye Yoon since I saw Missing You. I have not cried so much when I saw a separation.

I do not give up with Woo Hyun. Thanks and I hope to continue reading your next posts.

  16. @oli, she has several dramas like Coffee Prince, Goong, Missing You, Lie To Me, Etc..

At the market scene, i like how CJM’s nose crinkled when he saw her in her outfit in ep9… feels like the actor, not character…. and his dimple showed trying to eat the sweet potato

  17. Glad you are enjoying her.

  18. Also, Vineyard Man. She’s a city girl who falls in love with a country “bumpkin”.

  19. I am new here to comment.. but i really love your explanation episode by episode and i really appreciate it.

  20. Welcome aboard!

I find it inexplicable that the usual kdrama bloggers are snubbing this show. There are way DUMBER romcoms around, like Where Stars Land/Fox Bride Star and Devilish Joy, which they chose to recap and write about. But they don’t want to spend time on this one because they say it’s “boring.”

Do I sound bored to you when you read my comments? 😂

Oh well. It’s their loss. They can continue to dislike this show. As my father used to say when my brothers fell in and out of love, “De gustibus, non est disputandum”. There’s no accounting for taste.

    Apparently in kdramas too. 🤪

  21. I thought Goong was her break-out kdrama. I didn’t care for it and I wouldn’t recommend it to my daughter, if I had one. To a young teenager lacking critical skills and self-awareness, that kind of crappy behavior from the hero — all in name of tsundere-ness — might become her yardstick for a romantic relationship so no. 🙅‍♀️

There’s also Coffee Prince. She plays a cross-dresser. I only saw parts of it to see what the fuss was all about. I heard that it was awkward for many viewers to watch because they really could sense the male lead’s aversion to developing homosexual feelings for YEH’s character who looks like a pubescent boy.

Gong Yoo IS handsome though. And YEH is cute. The ending however is marred by THAT killjoy trope… you know what I mean…

Vineyard Man. I liked this one better than Goong bec the lead make is pretty decent… like a precursor of WooHyun. He’s a farm hand (with a PhD in agriculture??) at her grandfather’s vineyard while she’s a spoiled Seoulite.

I watched this primarily because I wanted to see how a kdrama would romanticize life in a vineyard. 😂 But I ended up staying bec I was rooting for the guy to convert her.

Lie to Me. I can only remember two things: lots of drinking and falling cherry blossom petals. I can’t even remember her male costar.

Missing You. I avoided this because I didn’t want to deal with the rape. I would be criticizing the writer’s handling of the trauma as plot device instead of the script in general. 😕

That’s it for me. Maybe the others can tell you more….

  22. There! There!

Don’t feel sad anymore. As tsutsuloo reminded us, YH’s struggles is just her way of “trying on different clothes” to see what right decision she should make for her career and her future. The tears weren’t all in vain. 🙂

  23. “But that Ramyun scene? When she told him that her noodles were all “swollen”? 😈🤣

    Pwahahaha.”

    I’m stumped! 🤣 🤣 🤣

On Mom’s tree, I think maybe she can just move it wherever she wants to just like her chair from WH.

I think you’re right about the soggy dimsum-y kind of thing. I thought it was sweet potato on seeing it for the first time.

Milk couple did look cute just holding on to each other with their heads leaning on each other too while sleeping.

I’m not sure what to expect this week. I just want them to make up already and have that back hug!. It seems the Mom really wants WH to be in his Father’s family registry right?

That scene where WW told Unni that she will get WH to come to the engagement no matter what. I felt Unni’s actually made up her mind to actually let YJ be finally happy. Just thinking.

  24. I think they’ll be using that trainee as a messenger. 😂

I’m working on the Fluttering Moments for Ep 9 so will be back later.

  25. No worries 🙂

    Looking forward to your post!

  26. Oh I forgot about the young lady messenger 🙂 From the teaser there weren’t scenes of our couple together.

    Aigoo!!!

  27. My post will have to wait. I couldn’t upload pics and suddenly my wifi is gone. Lol. I must have locked myself out of our network or something.

Will have to just continue tomorrow when I wake up. Goodnight!

  28. Good night Girlfriend! 😘

Hopefully your wifi will be back by the time you wake up ☺️

I’m getting apprehensive because we only have 6 episodes left ☹️
