Fluttering Alert: On Wings and Other Things

Wings:

Earlier I mentioned that the father chose Wannabe Wife to be the “wings” for his son when he assumes leadership of the medical foundation. He said, “Chief Director Go Yung Eun is Choego Group’s madam and SeHyuns’ mother. It looks like WooHyun is stealing SeHyun’s spot. You’re like the wings that I put on WooHyun. Do you think that she would like you?”

I explained that “wings” signified somebody who can be WH’s guardian angel. She’ll help and support him to “soar” above the fray. She’s expected to block all the threats and challenges from the Stepmother so WH won’t be hurt in the power struggle.

Although Wannabe is as scary, tenacious, and scheming as the Stepmother, there’s already one person that the kdrama writer has identified as being “winged.”

It’s YooJung.

As early as Episode 1, she already was joking about having wings. She told her BFF, “Do you know how hard it was to take these clean and upright roles? Angel wings. Fairy wings. Goddess wings. It’s so hard switching wings so I think I’m going to give it up now.”

For WooHyun however, she only needed a Good Person’s wings.

However, to be truthful here, all the talk about wings and wind remind me of this cheesy 1980s song “Wind Beneath My Wings” and eagles.

Definitely eagles….

Other Things:

1. Seo Young Hee’s name.

Am I the only one here who was frustrated when the lawyer mentioned the name to WooHyun and it didn’t ring a bell?

Attty: But WooHyun, one of the victims of the fire is named Seo YoungHee.
WH: Really?
Atty: That person’s daughter is…(camera flashes image of YJ on the TV screen) Never mind. Let’s talk later. Get some rest.
WH: (more images of YJ on TV) Yeah, okay.

I was frustrated that WH didn’t connect the name to the name he saw on the Seo YoungHee tree. He must have seen this plaque when he bowed in front of the bonsai tree in her Secret Garden.

In Episode 5, when she brought him to the garden for the first time.

In Episode 6, when they played the Truth game.

Then, he must have seen the name “Seo Young Hee” again when he paid respects to her at grave in Episode 7.

That tree would have a simple wooden block to identify the plot. This screenshot was from Episode 3(?) when YJ, Donsaeng and BFF went to visit the cemetery. The date of her death “Sept 9 1915” should also have triggered him because that was the same time as his fire.

I wouldn’t find it funny if he had been feigning ignorance all this time — in the same way he pretended not to know who Yoon YooJung was in Episode 1.

lol. That tissue plugged up his nose is realllllyyy attractive.

2. The car conversation between YJ and the reporter.

Thanks, @tsutsuloo! I totally forgot about that scene and I like it, too. Here’s the dialogue.

Rep: There are a lot of distorted opinions about YooJung Entertainment. (Thanks to Wannabe Wife)
YJ: What? What do you mean?
Rep: From what I can see, your current situation can be passed over very easily if you are able to obtain funds. (It means it’s a cash flow problem for the company, not mismanagement.) But Kang HyeJoo is spreading vicious rumors around all over the place (Chairman Cha would be pleased to hear this…not!). I’ll have to look deeper into what’s going on with Director Cha and KHJ. But I think that she’s just putting on a show by trying on her wedding dress and going around finding out about wedding gifts. (YJ looked upset about this news) Director Cha isn’t someone who changes easily. (YJ looked down with a smile) You two can’t let yourself drift apart because of pointless rumors and KHJ’s schemes. (YJ glanced at her, then looked down with a smile.) I’ll call all of my seniors and juniors in the business area and find out more about Choego Group and the Kanghan Group.
YJ: Thank you.

I thought YJ’s reaction here was appropriately discreet. In the future, it’s important for her not to give away her real feelings about a loved one to a reporter, even if that reporter is friendly with her.

And in this scene, she allowed the Reporter to continue with her assumptions without providing either denial or confirmation. She smiled like Mona Lisa would, enigmatically.

“Director Cha isn’t someone who changes easily.” This was YooJung’s smile.

To me, she was smiling because she recalled WH’s promise to never change. Moreover, she already knew for a fact that WH didn’t change easily. She wouldn’t have worn their ring again if she thought he was fickle. The reporter was only confirming something she already knew. Lastly, she was probably secretly pleased too that other discerning people like the reporter could confirm this steadfast and unwavering quality of WH.

“You two can’t let yourself drift apart because of pointless rumors and KHJ’s scenes.” This was her smile. She glanced at the reporter then looked down.

To me, this was a melancholic smile.

I’m sure she didn’t want them to drift apart either. She still wore their couple ring, right? Things were certainly complicated between them but NOT because of “rumors and KHJ’s scenes.” To an outsider like the Reporter, the cause of their crisis could easily be reduced to “rumors and KHJ’s scenes.” But to WH and YJ who were personally involved in the relationship, there were other underlying issues.

For instance, remember what YJ told him in Episode 10?

It wasn’t the rumor of his being a Chaebol secret child nor the engagement news that KHJ released that caused her great anger. It was finding about these “rumors and KHJ’s scenes” too late.

In her own words:

WH: YooJung, please wait. Please listen to me for a second. The engagement announcement is ridiculous. But my relationship with the Choego Group’s chairman is true. If it was possible, I wanted to hide this until the day I died. If only I could…it’s something I wanted to erase from my memory. It wasn’t easy to tell you.
YJ: But you shouldn’t have created a situation like this. What dumbfounded me and made me angry isn’t that you hid that you were a chaebol. It’s not also because of your engagement announcement to another woman. I’m so angry and I hate that I found out about things like that in this way. I thought that I’d be okay with losing everything.
WH: I’m sorry. I’m really sorry. I was going to tell you sooner. YooJung, I can’t send you alone like this.

That anger might have dissipated but the guilt for creating trouble for the company and endangering her Unnie’s life replaced her anger in this Episode 12.

As for WH, it wasn’t the “rumors and KHJ’s scenes” either that kept him away from her. It was his fear that he was going to cause her more hurt and injury by staying at her side. He saw that he had hurt her that night at the beach outing and he knew that YooJung was being targeted by the Kanghan/Choego Groups due to her association with him.

So, yes, this whole conversation with the Reporter was very interesting. She was getting feedback from the Reporter without revealing anything much about her PERSONAL relationship with WooHyun to the PUBLIC.

As her Unnie observed, YooJung has changed significantly as a result of meeting WooHyun. She’s grown up. She’s become less impulsive, giddy, and communicative and more introspective, circumspect, and private in dealing with her feelings…as she should be.

  1. Wings, Mom’s name placards, and Mona Lisa’s smile—brilliant. I love it.

From the first episode, we saw how Woo-Hyun had an excellent memory for faces and spoken names. Direct or indirect introductions with the name spoken aloud—as his patient and nurse did for Yoo-Jung—reinforce WH’s memory.

Before this post, I hadn’t realized Woo-Hyun must have seen Seo Yeong Hee’s name at least three times! And maybe that’s the problem. We’ve joked about prosopagnosia (face blindness) being the kdrama’s disorder du jour. Has drama logic created a new condition where WH cannot comprehend written names unless they’re uttered?**

For e.g, on that fateful day at the airport, he saw Yoo-Jung’s fans’ placards at the airport but didn’t appear to recall them when his patient and nurse talked up YJ. Additionally, YJ never calls her mother by name. Like many of us, she generally refers to her mother as “my mother,” “Mom” or “that person I miss.”

@packmule3 noted in Fluttering Alert First Impressions, their first “encounters” were non-events. But as soon they heard each other’s names, their fates were sealed.

I love @packmule3’s comparison of Yoo-Jung to the Mona Lisa. She’s no longer the girl who insisted on shouting her love for that trashy man. She’s finally understanding the importance of cherishing and protecting her love. As Woo-Hyun curtly told BFF in Ep. 7 (3:24):

“Whether it’s real or fake, won’t only the two people actually involved in the relationship know the truth about it?”.

    [@tsutsuloo sighs]

**My own condition is the opposite. I have difficulty remembering people’s names unless I write them down.

  2. Wow! Your memory is awesome! I only recall those wings reference now because you’ve posted it. Thank you. Let’s see if YJ can finally give WH the ‘wings’ that he needs to fight off the dark side!

Did WH think it was a different Seo Yeong Hee? Or does he know but he doesn’t say? But if he knows then he wouldn’t ask YJ’s Dad to meet his children like he did in one of their dinners. So how come he’s not recognizing the name? Is everything that’s happening, closing down of the clinic, preparing court documents to fight his Dad and being away from YJ, making him blind to the connection? Is it another plot device for our OTP to separate again later? I guess we will find out.

“To me, she was smiling because she recalled WH’s promise to never change. Moreover, she already knew for a fact that WH didn’t change easily. I couldn’t agree more. She needed to confirm that what she’s thought of WH was right and that this time the person that she loves is not wavering just because there are issues.
