Put Your Head on My Shoulder: Ep 14 Highlights

To me, this is a very interesting episode because the conflicting thoughts of Gu WeiYi and Situ Mo are laid bare.

1. Remembering the kiss

However hard Gu WeiYi tried to recall the events of the night he was drunk, he couldn’t remember kissing Situ Mo.

While brushing his teeth in the bathroom, he wondered aloud, “Did I kiss her?”

Unsmilingly, she popped up behind him. She seemed to be daring him to call her a liar. He quickly gargled and skedaddled out of there. She slammed the door after him.

Taking down the laundry, he was muttering to himself, “I was drunk and fell asleep until the next morning.” He was denying that a kiss could have happened.

She heard him and huffed in disbelief. She coldly refused his offer to help her bring in the laundry and angrily grabbed all of them.

Naturally she was upset. Not only did he not remember the incident, he was making her out to be a fibber.

Then, while he was cleaning the vacuum of its accumulated dust, he observed, “It’s good if you could record it.”

To me, he was addressing Yuan Yuan the vacuum. He was telling it that he wished to create verbal commands for the vacuum to record and automatically follow. But Situ Mo thought he was alluding to their kiss, and that he was wishing SHE had videotaped or recorded their kiss to show him as proof. She could only sigh in exasperation as she headed towards the door.

On a side note: The name of the vacuum is Yuan Yuan. Thanks@kfangurl!!

Circle’s name in Chinese is Yuan Yuan, which literally translates to “round round” – so yes, it’s much cuter in Chinese!

But the last straw for Situ Mo was him doubting that she’d closed the cat bag. As she put on her shoes to leave the house, he called out to her, “Have you zipped the cat bag shut?” She said yes, and he answered, “That’s good. I’m worried that you might forget it.”

She blew up then. “You’re worried if I forget it?”

She got angry because he was worried that SHE would forget such a trivial thing like a zipping a bag when she had a BIGGER reason to be furious with him for forgetting their kiss. She’d been holding back her temper but now she went to the fridge and took out several cans of beer. She wanted him drunk again if that was the only way for him to remember their kiss.

After the fifth can, he did. She had to stick her face up close so he could stare into her eyes.

GY: I recall. Now I recall it.

But when he leaned it to kiss her, she shoved him back.

Mo: That’s good then.

What did this scene tell me? One, Situ Mo was patient with him but she had a temper, too, when riled up.

Two, the kiss was important to her. But as long as he couldn’t remember their kiss, she couldn’t come out with the truth that she liked him. To me, she repressed her emotions and lied to Meng Lu and YuYin that she felt nothing for GWY, in order to protect herself from consciously wishing that GWY reciprocated her feelings. Once bitten, twice shy. She already had a bad experience of expecting affection with FP; she didn’t want to repeat it with GWY who was more out of her league than FP was.

2. The Spreadsheet

The day in the office, Situ Mo googled “How to judge if a man likes you?”

She devised her own method of judging whether Gu Wei Yi liked her or not during her office meeting. One of her colleagues briefed them on their ad campaign about a meticulous man who measures everything with a “perfect form.” Now, I don’t know what a “perfect form” is but Situ Mo was inspired to create a spreadsheet tailored just for Gu WeiYi.

Remember: I don’t understand Chinese. But I’m guessing that her spreadsheet categorized Gu WeiYi’s past behaviors to determine whether he liked her or not. She called it “Marking Form for Gu WeiYi.”

However, Gu WeiYi didn’t understand the “context” of this spreadsheet. He didn’t know that STM was gauging his feelings for her. She was listing down the criteria and past examples of his actions to determine whether he liked he or not. Thus, the final score of -10 meant that he did NOT like her.

In contrast, from his point of view, the spreadsheet appeared to be grading him for his past “undesirable” actions. So, to him, the score of -10 meant that he would make an undesirable boyfriend. He wasn’t boyfriend material. He would be rejected if he proposed to her.

Do you see the difference?

I’m sure they were both appalled by the abysmal grade but for different reasons. lol.

3. He Says/She Says

Even though I only speak English, I’m not going to let that spoil my fun in guessing what’s on the spreadsheet.

This screenshot has several doodles, namely, mahjong tiles, a cat, the kiss and a vacuum robot. His total score is -10.

Help with translations, please!! Thanks.

All I understand is: he received 5 points each for two deeds and 10 points for another two good deeds. He also was deducted 5 points each for two bad deeds and 10 points for another THREE bad deeds. It’s easy to see from the charts (without doing the math) that he’s down 10 points.

Mo: Where do you want to go with me?
WY: Let’s have some food.

lol. I assume that he insists on treating her to food to make up for the 10 points deducted from him. And we all know what this is all about, right? Situ Mo deducted points for that time when he ate out with YuYin and left her to eat porridge at home. In STM’s books, this means that he doesn’t like her because he left her to go with YY. But from GWY’s understanding, this mean that he must compensate for something he did wrong in the past — if he wants STM to accept his proposal.

Thus, he insists on taking her out to eat. If we are to go with the icons that popped up around STM’s head like a halo, he plans to stuff her with fried chicken, cake, ice cream and a burger. hahaha. But STM declines.

Mo: I’ve eaten during the tea break and still full.
WY: Let’s eat again.
Mo: I don’t want to eat.
WY: Oh.
Mo: Let’s go.

Now, you see how desperate GWY is? He thinks needs to re-do his past behavior.

Mo: Where are we going?
WY: You’ll know it. Are you hungry? Let’s have food. (he insists again)
Mo: I’m not hungry. (she sees a stray cat and runs over to pet it) Meow

Another scorecard pops up. Previously he earned 10 points for the cat. Again, I don’t read Chinese so I’m guessing that STM gave him points for giving the Math Guy’s cat a home even when he’s allergic to it. Since he was rewarded 10 points for the cat, GWY thinks he can again score 10 points for “boyfriend material” by picking up the cat.

Mo: (blocking him) What are you doing?
WY: Carrying the cat.
Mo: Aren’t you allergic to cats?
WY: I can overcome it. (he reaches for cat and he sneezes)
Mo: Overcome it, huh? Let’s go. Goodbye cat!

As she walks away, GWY sees another way to earn points. A scorecard pops in his head. He failed to get points from the stray cat so he must earn them by other means. He can earn points by impressing her with his excellence in his field of studies.

That’s why he suddenly calls up his Professor and starts yapping using high-falutin quantum mechanics jargon.

WY: Professor Jang. In the electronic correlation of topology of flat belt, the interaction of femion and boson, numerical studies of quantum lattice systems, an Abel type of Quantum Hall effect was found, as well as non-Abelian Quantum Hall.

The prof hangs up on him but he pretends to talk for a while. He’s trying to show that he works hard that even when he’s out with her, he’s thinking about quantum physics. lol.

To me, however, GWY got the wrong idea. In STM’s eyes, he shows that he likes her when he works hard or goes out of his way to please her. Like that time he showed her how the microscope worked.

Mo: Are you busy? (she thinks he has to go attend to his work)
WY: No.
Mo: Let’s go to the place another time. (Meaning, if he’s busy then can go out on another day.)
WY: We’re almost there. Let’s go.

They arrive at an amusement park and STM is excited. She rushes off to the entrance, leaving GWY to follow her. Prof Jang’s advice resonates with him. He must find a place where STM can’t run away when he confesses to her. He chooses the bumper car rides.

Mo: (he straps her in) You only ride this in the amusement park? I want to ride the roller coaster.
WY: Too noisy!
Mo: Why did you come then?
WY: I just want to make you relax.
Mo: To me, the most relaxing way is lying on the bed after work.
WY: I have something to tell you.

She looks at him.

Mo: What’s that?
WY: This morning…

And their car gets bump. STM keeps telling him to “Say it. What do you want to say? Say it.” But his attention is now on evading the other cars. lol. So much for finding a place where STM cannot RUN away! He’s literally the one running away now on a bumper car from their conversation.

When it all ended, STM asks him, “Gu WeiYi, what do you want to say?”

WY: One more time.
Mo: No way.

And she ups and leaves him.

He chases her to confess but a frantic phone call from Prof Jang about their cat sends them running to the pet hospital. Thankfully, the cat recovers. Prof Jang wants to bring it home with him. STM insists on bringing the cat home with them as it’s been staying with them all this time. GWY steps in to tug at her sleeves to indicate that she should let Prof Jang take care of it.

But she glares at him

and he lets go.

But then he remembers that he can earn 10 points from the cat so he changes tactics.

WY: Professor, this is our kitten. I’ll give it to you. But I want to hug it for a while.

Surprised, Situ Mo looks at him, and he looks back at her. He carries the cat and STM gazes wonderingly at him. His sneeze ruins the moment though and he returns the cat to Prof Jang.

They return home in silence. GWY brings her slippers to her at the couch. I think they’re missing the cat. Then Yuan Yuan, the robot vacuum, reports that it’s “lower power, going to power off.” Gu WeiYi instantly stands up to return it to its dock for recharging.

But he remembers that he lost 5 points for the robot vacuum so he sits back down again.

Mo: Why didn’t you save Circle?
WY: It needs to grow up by itself.

He missed the point. He was docked points for being too fussy about Circle. He treats it like his child; he worries when it got injured. He worries about it more than he does with Situ Mo. In fact, just the other night, he wanted STM to clean the house at night because of the cat hair. When she said to make Circle clean up instead, he said it was tired and it needed to rest. lol.

That’s why STM deducted 5 points from him –because she thinks he doesn’t love her as much as he does their vacuum robot. But he thinks the score has something to do with being a “boyfriend material.”

But now, STM stands up and replace Circle in its dock for recharging.

Next, GWY remembers that he also lost 5 points for clogging the bathroom so he tries to correct it. He’s going to clean the bathroom so he can prove to her that he’s a worthy of her.

WY: When do you want to bathe?
Mo: Huh?
WY: I want to clean the sewage. I’ll go first.

Again, I think he’s getting the wrong end of the stick here. It doesn’t matter to her whether he unclogs the bathroom or not. She’s referring to the time when he told her not to leave because she had to remove her hair clogging the shower stall drainage. In her mind, he must not love her because he was too petty.

She doesn’t know that he had been trying to detain her; he didn’t want to leave him so he made her clean the bathroom.

Then the following morning, he cooks her favorite stinky food. He’s probably read on the spreadsheet that he lost points for banning the stinky food at home. So to win some brownie points with her, he’s showing that he’ll tolerate the smell in their apartment even though he can’t stand it. To me, he misinterpreted the list. For STM, the big proof that he doesn’t like her is when he prohibited her from eating the soup in the house because it’s a sign that she grosses him out.

Mo: What’s that smell? Lizhou River Snails Rice Noodle?
WY: Yes. Wait for a moment. (he unclips the clothespin on his nose)
Mo: Why do you cook the Snails rice noodle?
WY: You didn’t take your dinner last night?
Mo: No one will eat this in the morning.
WY: I’ll get some porridge then.
Mo: No need. Go ahead. I’ll eat it. I’ll wait here.
WY: Wait a minute. (they smile at each other)

Mo: Only one? You don’t want to eat it?
WY: I’ve eaten outside.
Mo: Taste it. (teasing) I’ll finish it then.

The whole time he’s talking to her, he holds his breath to avoid smelling the soup.

Mo: GWY, I feel awkward when you’re looking at me.
WY: I want to wash the bowl.
Mo: GWY, if you don’t like the smell, go back to your room. I’ll clean it after this.
WY: It’s okay. Only Snails rice Noodle.
Mo: Okay…

She pauses.

Mo: GWY, do you like me?

Adhoc thoughts … now that I’ve seen the video clip of GWY and Situ Mo brushing their teeth in separate bathrooms, I notice in the first screenshot that she’s wearing the same T-shirt as in the clip, and this time they are in the same bathroom, different expressions! Heh!

I was pretty frustrated that the lab guys haven’t cottoned on to the fact that the scientific way was not working with Mo Mo and that they should just stop endless discussions on hypotheses. I was also frustrated with GWY for choosing, of all rides, the noisy, with most interruptions, Bumper Car in which to explain the morning’s fiasco to her. I second FP in asking if he had no knowledge of Ferris Wheels in Amusement Parks, and have settled sadly to think that his smarts are only in science and math. There is a serious lack of common sense here!!!

I wonder if anyone else felt a bit sorry for kitty in the bag? I kept thinking that it was unhealthy for kitty to be cooped up in there for more than a few minutes or the length of a trip. Surely the cat would need exercise and to get out to pee and stuff, and to drink every now and then?

I mentioned before that he’s really a stickler for taking advice or going by the book. Now he follows FP’s advice to up his score with Mo Mo before confessing, and he takes her ‘GWY Form’ as the exam he has to redo in order to raise his score! (@packmule you’re probably right in the way you interpreted how he interpreted the score on the ‘form’) Good grief!

I’m glad that in the next episode, Mo Mo has guessed that he may have seen her ‘form’. Shows that she’s paying attention and putting 2 and 2 together. It just occurred to me that it would have been a great move on her part if she’d deliberately let fall that form so that GWY could wise up a bit. However, he misinterpreted everything!!! *Frustrated*

I felt it was a pity that he does the swooniest things when Mo Mo is asleep. Carrying her to her room and tucking her in is sweet, but I didn’t understand how he could get his arms stuck under her and couldn’t just roll her off and get away. He’d already carried her, so what’s the big deal about pulling his arms away?

I thought his Snail Rice Noodle scene was hilarious. He could barely draw breath to answer her since he was trying not to smell LOL. He was trying to breath the air from his left and not the air in front of his face LOLOL. In the end when trying to answer her pointed question, of course he’d choke. 😂 But that’s for the next episode.

  2. I’ll post my reply on the blog. 🙂

  3. I seem to like providing translation help around here, so here I go again? 😉

Here’s the translation of the form, which I hadn’t looked at carefully while watching, but was fun to read in your screenshot! 😀

Quite Good (+5 points): Gave me his winnings from mahjong | Serious about work
Moved me (+10 points): Carried kitty | prepared well for when there was no power
What the heck (-5 points): In love with the cleaning robot | Made me clear the drain pipe
Mental retardation (-10 points): Doesn’t remember the kiss | Went to eat with someone else and didn’t take me along | Doesn’t let me eat snail noodles at home
Made me so mad (-100 points): (blank)
    Get lost (-1000 points): (blank)

  4. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Thanks so much @kfangurl! That explains all GWY’s weirdness after seeing that piece of paper. This is fun to think about.

Giving winnings only earns him 5 points (I’d have given him at least 10 points for that) + serious about work 5 = 10
    Carried kitty 10 + prepared for no power 10 = 20
    Total = 30

I like the ‘What the heck’ notes = -10
And the Mental retardation notes = -30 However I believe the mental retardation would apply to just the first failure in memory and not so much the ‘eating out’ and ‘not allowing snail noodles’ bit.
    Total deduction = -40

I’d have given forgetting the kiss and going out with someone else a -100 points each, personally.

So now I see, it’s because he’s trying so hard to regain the deducted 10 points that he goes all out trying to get her to eat with him and he brings snail noodles home.

I must say he has a great memory, coming home he recalls the ‘What the heck’ point deductions and tries not to love the robot and offers to clean the bathroom drain.

Hah! If only Mo Mo knew what power she has with that ‘form’, she’d be able to get him to do a whole bunch more of things!!!

  5. You’re very welcome, @GB! 😀

I think that the way the points are stacked also say a lot about what is important to Mo Mo.. so it looks like she’s not really bothered by the issue of money, so him giving her his winnings is just “Quite Good”? 😉

Also.. I think the mental retardation thing is possibly along the lines of, “He’d be retarded not to know that it would make me mad if he goes out to eat with someone else” and “He’s retarded not to know how to enjoy snail noodles, coz it’s the best food on earth” XD

  6. Growing Beautifully (GB)

LOL @kfangurl. Yeah, we now have a revised definition of mental retardation. And that reminds me … this is a guy who’s mighty proud of his intellect, so being down for 3 different things under Mental Retardation must have punctured the ego. That could explain why he called his Prof and started talking ‘clever scientific’ stuff in front of Mo Mo. 🤪😜

  7. @GB: True! Talk about hitting him where it hurts the most! 😆

  8. Growing Beautifully (GB)

Everyone, I just saw the ‘Extra Story’ of this show up on YouTube. Mighty cute. Of course since it’s showing after the whole series has ended, it’s got SPOILERS.

  9. When I watched the bumper car scene, I was like, this is where you’re going to propose your love to her? 😲 I still thought it was funny. hehehe

I thought it was cute of him to try very hard to get back his points. 🙂

    I’ve finished watching it and I enjoyed it. There’s a few funny scenes in episode 17 and 20, I think. 🤣 🤣 🤣

Awww thank you @Growing Beautifully for that you tube link. I liked those little epilogues and I loved that he used his own scientific method to show that not only diamonds can have special meaning to relationships but a glass harder than diamonds. It’s cool how GWY described it as ‘OUR LOVE IS INDESTRUCTIBLE’. 😍

My favorite would have to be when GWY said that everything about STM was his plan. 😍 😍 😍

  10. Growing Beautifully (GB)

    @agdr03 You’re welcome. 😊

Now that you mention the glass and diamonds thing,… looks like this is one boyfriend who got away with proposing but without the RING!!! He didn’t even do a proper, official proposal with flowers or anything!!! Unheard of in modern kdramaland 😁 but maybe more acceptable in cdramaland?

I thought that confessing his love to her in the bumper car was the most hare-brained thing in the world!!!! Scientists! 😂

  11. Agree that bumper car plan was a doozy. 🤪 He just gave a whole new meaning to “mad scientist.”

I’ll try to catch with the ending. I heard there was a bed scene? Maybe I should skip to that episode? Lol.

I’m back but heading to bed now. 😴 See y’all later!

  12. Yes! I forgot about that! 😄 No ring at all! That’s a first for me as a drama watcher BUT STM didn’t mind at all 😄 She’s a simple girl whose very happy with her scientist man. 😉

I wasn’t expecting that bed scene at all 😂 I was totally shocked but the outcome was more hilarious and expected 😂
