Bitch Talk: Rent an Oppa

@agdr03’s comment on our 4th year anniversary had me thinking that, yeaaahh, she’s right. I do get obsessive about my analysis.

So to lighten me up, I’m sharing these two videos on renting an oppa. You might consider this next time you visit Seoul.

This YT is informational.

He gives the rates. $80 for 2.5 hours. Not bad since it’s a private tour.

At 2:36, they shared a drink. Ugh. I wouldn’t have done that with a stranger. It’s like exchanging saliva/indirect kissing.

At 7:45, the guy teaches the girl how to say “oppa” in the cutesy way.

At 10:11, the guy says that, in Korea, you have to make a loud sound while eating. I did notice that slurping sound in the kdramas, but not when I’m dining with business associates in Seoul. lol. I don’t think I can do that slurping sound without the noodles spraying onto my face or blouse.

I think guy in this video is more “professional” than the guy in the next video. He broke a  few rules there. He should learn how to say no.

This one is funnier. The girl really gets into this Hire-an-Oppa non-date/date. She’s all giggly. She asks more personal questions which the guy gamely answers.

At 15:40, she asks him if he has a girlfriend and if she knows about this.

At 17:10, I swear, this kid was NOT talking about me. I would never have called this kid, “Ryan Oppa.” Ugh.

Full disclosure.

I haven’t hired an oppa before – and I don’t think I’ll ever will. Any oppa of mine is someone with a walker.

But I once booked a guide to tour me around the National Museum of Korea. I wanted a private tour so I could focus on the artwork I specifically wanted to see and be in-and-out of the museum with the minimum fuss.  The tour worked out well. He was a university student. And I didn’t call him Oppa…. hahaha. If I really wanted to tease him, I would have slayed him with a “Yeobo.”

And I agree with the ladies in the YT video. For a moment, I felt second-hand embarrassment. It didn’t bother me that I was hiring his services. But it bothered me that he might feel like gigolo, escorting me around. I was careful to maintain respectful distance and formality. I wish though he’d worn a badge to make everything more official. I shook hands; I didn’t exchange hugs.

  1. Howdy! 😊

Hey, your not obsessive with your dramas. I said you’re awesome in analysing dramas, not obsessive. ☺️ Besides if you’re obsessive then we are too. 😄

This hire an Oppa is very interesting and I was not aware of this service too. I thought the first video was awkward for both person but they carried on ok. The second video, I thought the girl was very chatty ( I thought it was good that she’s like that though) and she was looking for a boyfriend for real.

I wonder how it would be if a hire is enough for both of the people to be really interested in each other. They said one of the rules was to never allow contact with the customer right? So maybe they will have to quit the job?

I thought it’s a decent job and really both guys in the video were friendly enough. That’s got to be one of the qualities to be employed in the service. I would probably hire one if I was still 30. But now, I think my Oppa would give me the killer look and I’d be dead. 😂

That Yeobo made me laugh out loud. 😂 Also the 61 year old lady is the one that’s obsessive on dramas because she called the guy Oppa. Cringe! 🤣

  2. I thought Jina was prying into the guy’s personal life a bit awkward. Like asking him about his girlfriend’s reaction. Well, what did she expect him to say, really? But I’ve come to expect that kind of intrusive questions after watching kdramas…hahaha. Also, they’re both Koreans so they understand each other, and their level of tolerance for personal questions.

That 61-year old lady was hmmm… kinda sad. It seemed to me that she needed a “travel buddy.” I wouldn’t have hired the same guy for several sessions. If she wanted somebody to show her around Seoul, then having different guides each day would give her a more varied perspective. Hanging out with the same guy seems to be a bit off. 🙂

  3. True! I didn’t expect Jina to be Korean too that’s probably why the guy answered her prying questions.

About the old lady, maybe she feels really comfortable with the same guy and they probably go through different tourist spots.
