The Great Seducer: Death Notice

Warning: Don’t read this if you’re a SJoo fangirl, a snowflake or a Nervous Nelly.

I’ve written earlier that there appears to be constant foreshadowing of SJoo’s death. I know that there’s going to be a bloodshed in the story. For one, it’s written in the actual story. Valmont dies in a duel.

Btw, this isn’t a spoiler. The “news” of Valmont’s death is 236 years old. lol. There’s a statute of limitation on spoilers.

For another, we see blood drops on the teasers/posters that Tamara shared with us.

But I wasn’t sure whose death it was until Episode 10.

SeJoo’s sister-in-law mused to herself that he could do anything he wanted, even forget about his great grandfather’s memorial. But next year, it would be HIS memorial.

She meant it as a joke. Like, “Just you wait, punk! Your rebellion will soon be the death of you.” Nevertheless, there’s a sense of foreboding about it.

I told Oli that the DVD that KyungJoo wanted to watch with him was also a foreshadowing.  The DVD was “I Give My First Love to You.” According to the synopsis of the DVD, the hero had a terminal illness and had only a year to live. I thought it was an odd choice of movie to watch. The girl in the movie decided to love because the hero was going to die.

The reference to the vampire was another one. SJoo mentioned that he must have been a vampire in the past. But ShiHyun corrected him saying that vampires don’t have a past. When a vampire dies in the sunlight, he vanishes without a trace. Again, this talk of death to me sounded ominous. SJoo couldn’t keep on living irresponsibly because one of these days, he might have to pay with his life. That was why SooJi was frantic with worry when SeJoo got kidnapped. She thought his past misconduct finally caught up with him – just like Valmont.

On a side note: Tamara and I discussed who SJ’s most likely target is. ShiHyun or SooJi. ShiHyun would be the natural choice. He’s jealous of ShiHyun. Remember Snow White’s mirror came up as a topic?

TH: You followed out of concern for me?
SH: No.
TH: It’s true. Your eyes can’t lie.
SH: I know. They say my eyes are like Cinderella’s mirrors.
TH: (But) Snow White had a mirror. SeJoo said that (didn’t he)?
SH: How did you know?
TH: I thought he’d get things mixed up. Did you think it was Cinderella too?
SH: I did not.
TH: You did too.
SH: I did not.
TH: Did you not read the story?
SH: I did.

To be precise here, the story of Snow White involved a mirror. But it was Snow White’s jealous stepmother who owned the mirror. She used the mirror to ask, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?” And the mirror told the truth each time that Snow White was the fairest one.

We all know that SJoo was a second-class citizen compared to SH in the eyes of SJ.

This gotta hurt.

Last (for now), something about SJoo’s behavior makes me wonder if he himself didn’t have a death wish. I don’t want to blame the victim, but it would be remiss of me not to point out that HE deliberately stirred the hornet’s nest a couple of times. For instance,it was provocative to tell his dad that he wasn’t willing to go the US because the only English words he knew were “love” and “sex.”

ShiHyun too had been given a short leash by his father. But so far he hasn’t disobeyed. He was told to respond immediately to Secretary Yoon’s call and he had done so.

In contrast, missing his grandfather’s memorial was a stupid move by SJoo. Even SJ knew that.

Gotta run now. Looking forward to tonight’s episode of the Great Seducer.

  1. Interesting theory. It goes hand in hand in another one of your posts when you mentioned that Se Joo was more similar to Valmont than Si Hyun is. But, what would Se Joo’s death accomplish? Is there a secret that would be exposed? Would he risk his life saving SooJi from something or even Si Hyun? I wouldn’t doubt he’d sacrifice himself for either of them, but I could feel there’d be a greater sense of loss if Si Hyun or SooJi died because it seems like there’s a parent who has greatly sacrificed something, that has yet to be uncovered for them, but Se Joo’s death doesn’t seem like the right kind of sacrifice. I can’t explain it as well as I want to..but maybe you can still kind of get what my vagueness is trying to explain haha

  2. In the original novel, Valmont died, the Marquise (or SooJi) became a pariah (social death). She contacted smallpox (? I can’t remember 100% now) and her beauty was disfigured.

Madame de Tourvel (TH’s counterpart) also died. I thought it was from heartbreak but there must have been a better explanation for her death…

HyeJung’s equivalent, Cecile, returned to the convent. She was actually raped IIRC by Valmont but the Marquise brushed it off as sexual inexperience or something….

If ever SeJoo dies, my bet is on SooJi.

I don’t think this drama will go dark – or pitch black. But me being a blood-thirsty wench, I want blood — and amnesia as well.

  3. I’m like 99% sure there won’t be any death in this drama because it has a very different tone than the source novel. However, there is that 1% chance and I agree that Se Joo is the most likely candidate. I had my suspicions after I read in his character description that he was willing to do “anything” for Soo Ji, so I could see him somehow getting killed while trying to help Soo Ji get revenge or whatever.

And You’re correct about the fate of the 3 characters in the novel. Valmont dies in duel with Danceny, Marquise is ostracized by society and contracts smallpox and is disfigured, and Madam Tourvel, heartbroken by Valmont rejection (and fact she broke her own principles), depressed-loses will to live-dies from sickness.
