Put Your Head on My Shoulder: Episode 6

Phew! Now that roadblock Episode 5 is out of the way, I can once again enjoy watching our couple in this episode.

Here are the highlights for me:

1. Going to school together

At breakfast together, Si TuMo mentions that she’s going to school (and not to her internship) to discuss her thesis. WeiYi says that he’s going to school too. Inquisitive mom asks if they’re going together, and WeiYi nods yes for both of them.

He notices TuMo staring at him so he asks, “What’s wrong?” She answers, “Nothing,” then follows it up with, “You answered that without a hitch.”

I think the better translation is “without missing a beat.” He answered without missing a beat. He didn’t even hesitate or pause to confirm with her that they were indeed going together. He just took for granted that they were.

It’s obvious that WeiYi KNOWS that he’s making Si TuMo’s mom happy with this arrangement. I think he knows that he’s gotten Si TuMo’s mom’s approval to date her so he’s confident taking matters into his own hands.

And once on the bus, TuMo appears nervous to have WeiYi sit beside her but WeiYi has already prepared for them to listen to a radio show together on the bus ride to school.

2. Ugh! Old habits die hard.

In a mother-and-daughter talk, the mom promises Si TuMO that she won’t interfere again in her business. But later, she overhears STM and WY talking about careers. STM doesn’t know whether she wants to be an accountant or not.

WY: What do you want to be?
STM: Advertising designer.
Mom: It’s good to be an accountant. Don’t think too much other than that. Am I right, Xiao Gu?

Do you see her trick here? She’s getting WY to side with her so STM will be forced to go along with her plans. Didn’t she say earlier that she was going to butt out of STM’s business?

WY: It’s more important that we can do a job that we love.

He sides with STM and the mom is left speechless.

Then the following morning, mom doesn’t want to leave until STM signs a contract promising not to move out of WY’s apartment. STM signs it under duress but leaves the apartment as soon as the mom departs.

lol. The daughter can’t be expected to keep her word when the mom is determined to interfere in her affairs.

3. Accompanying her to her work interview

He misses her but I don’t think he knows how to engineer a “surprise” encounter with her. That’s why he drops by her dorm on the off-chance that she’ll pass by. Luck’s on his side.

STM: Gu WeiYi! Why are you here?
GY: I’m lost.
STM: Huh?
GY: I’m unfamiliar with this area and it has been long since I left. (yeahhhh, right! A genius like him forgetting her dorm?? I don’t think so.)
STM: Where do you want to go?
GY: ??

See? He just said he was lost so he must have been planning to go somewhere, right? But he couldn’t answer her because he had no other destination but her dorm. He switches  topic.

GY: Where are you going?
STM: To an interview.
GY: Then we can go together. (lol. I’m reminded of that time he told her mother that they’d go to school together. He said this, too, “without missing a beat.”)
STM: Huh? How did you know I got an interview at Ori? (he didn’t know, of course.)
GY: (bluffing) I heard it from someone.
STM: It spreads so fast?
GY: Let’s go.

STM: Here it is. Is the place you want to go to far from here?
GY: Not far. It’s just around here. (Liar! Liar! Pants on fire! He’s tagged along with her. He had nowhere to go and no business to attend to.)
STM: Then I’ll go in first. Bye!
GY: Bye!

And he waits there for her. I like that he doesn’t mind waiting for her while Fu Pei would’ve been bored out of his skull.

BTW, can somebody please tell me what he’s googling here? Thanks!

Updated to add @joonminfan’s translation. Thanks, @joonminfan!

GWY was googling: how the high-speed rail (tracks) are cleaned in the first 2 pics. In the third pic: how to comfort someone who has failed an interview.

STM finishes her interview and sees him outside the building.

STM: How come you’re still here?
GY: (avoiding the answer) How was the interview?
STM: It should be okay. They asked me when I can start working.

He hands her a bottle of water. Awww…

This is just like Episode 2.

He had prepared bread for her to eat after her interview but she insisted on treating him out to a meal. At first, he begged off, saying that he had calculations to work on. But she told him a long story about a depressed man who was going to kill himself but, after eating potato, decided to sleep instead. He then replied that he was in a good mood because he wanted to give her the bread. In the end, he yielded to her to demand to eat out and he put his bread away.

They return to her dorm together.

4. Gu WeiYi’s lie

STM is excited that she’s finished her thesis. She’s exclaiming “I want to dedicate the thesis to…” when Gu WeiYi’s call interrupts her.

STM: Gu WeiYi. Hello?

It seems as if Si TuMo is dedicating her thesis to none other than Gu WeiYi.

GY: Si TuMo, come back home now.
STM: Whose home?
GY: My home.
STM: Why?
GY: Your mom wanted to come.
STM: What? Did you tell her that I moved out?
GY: No.
STM: Okay, hold on a while and I’ll be back soon.
GY: Hurry up. I’ll try my best
STM: Okay, bye.

It’s only in the epilogue that we see what precipitated the phone call. He’d been reading a book when STM’s mom called.

Mom: Hello, Xiao Gu? Is Momo okay there?
GY: She’s pretty good.
Mom: I sent you something several days ago. It should be arriving now. Please check it.
GY: Okay.
Mom: You must tell me if Momo bullies you. I’ll scold her.
GY: Okay.

That’s when he hatched up a plan to get her back.

I found this scene amusing because I wasn’t expecting him to be devious. He looks so innocent and honest, as though butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth, that I was surprised that he’d schemed to get her back home.

We can tell that he’s excited to have her back: he prepped the house and he kept on looking at the door. It must have been a terrible let-down to see WeiYi’s roommate, Wang Shan, with her. When Fu Pei joins them, too, he’s visibly annoyed.

He doesn’t even bother to greet Fu Pei.

Fu Pei asks him if he was fine with them making a mess in his house to celebrate Si TuMo finishing his thesis. He doesn’t mince his words, “What if I say that I minded?”

5. The horror movie

I like that WeiYi is the only one unafraid to watch to sit through the movie. He’s giving Si TuMo heads- up so she won’t be scared.

WY: This granny wasn’t human.
STM: Has she gone away?
WY: Yes. (he observes the others being scared) He’ll eat the candle later.
STM: (whining) Please don’t say it.

So he stops. But when a “jump-scare” happens, she’s unprepared and startles. Of course, WeiYi catches her before she falls off the couch. lol.

STM: (blaming him) Why did you stop narrating?
WY: You asked me to stop it.
STM: You should tell me.
WY: Should I tell you or not?
STM: I don’t know.

They argue like an old married couple. He’s just doing whatever she wants, but she can’t make up her mind. She knows that she’s being unreasonable.
STM looks for her favorite tomato juice.
STM: No tomato flavor?
FP: It was sold out. I can go –
STM: It’s alright. I just merely said it.

Fu Pei sees an opening here and starts talking to clear up their relationship.

FP: (grr… Wang Shang told him!) You were forced to stay together because of your mother, right?
STM: Yes. So what?
FP: Why didn’t you tell me?
STM: Why should I? You aren’t my boyfriend.

She suddenly stands up and leaves so WeiYi worries.

WY: Where are you going?
STM: I remember we have tomato-flavored chips in the house.
WY: Ah.

And he smiles.

I don’t know if he’s smiling either because she remembers that they kept one in the house or because she isn’t leaving to go home. But I like the idea that Fu Pei bought all sorts of sodas but didn’t have that one juice that STM wanted while WeiYi kept her favored kind in stock.

After the movie’s done, WeiYi sees that FP is wasted and offers to get him a glass of water. He calls Si TuMo to come and find him the honey. I’m sure he knows where the honey is but he likes it that STM knows where everything is located at “their” apartment. It’s as if she never left.

6. Last, but not the least, Doraemon

Remember what we read about Doraemon and his pocket full of gadgets? Well, I’m beginning to think that WeiYi is copying Doraemon and his backpack is similar to Doraemon’s pocket, and is filled with surprises for Si TuMo. He seems to carry stuff around to give to her.

First, he downloaded her favorite talk show.

Then, he had a water bottle ready for her.

And he also kept her draft notes in his bag, too.

I guess she didn’t really need them now that she finished her thesis. But it was sweet of him to carry them around with him. lol. I wouldn’t be surprised if THAT had been his original excuse for hanging around her dorm. He wanted to return her notes to her in person.

8 Comments On “Put Your Head on My Shoulder: Episode 6”

  1. GWY was googling: how the high-speed rail (tracks) are cleaned in the first 2 pics. In the third pic: how to comfort someone who has failed an interview.

Lol. He’s such a cute funny and sweet boy.

  2. ❤️ Thanks for translating! It gives another reason to moon over GWY. 🙂 Awww. He’s getting ready to comfort her should she fail in the interview.

That’s the appeal of this show for me right now. I’m not into these alpha-jerks. Yes, GWY is aloof and reserved but he’s not mean. And so far, he hasn’t reprimanded STM for mistakes that she made, nor lectured her with an “I told you so” tone of voice.

  3. I’m loving this show so far. I’ve watched it till Ep 16. Anyway I hope I don’t come off as rude in my next comment, but the female lead’s last name is Situ, and her first name is Mo. It’s a double word last name.

  4. So her first name is Mo? pwahahaha It’s like being named Kate McGill, and being called KateMc Gill. Or with the Chinese inversion, Mc GillKate. Thanks for the correction.

    I’m doing Eps 7 and 8 today.

  5. Growing Beautifully (GB)

I liked how GWY’s statement that she should do what she enjoys struck Mo Mo and got her thinking about what she was doing. Maybe she had been caving in to her parents all too much and had thought that in matters of study or work, she ought to follow instructions. Anyway she did say she only took up Accountancy because of parental pressure.

Hearing GWY make that statement seemed to have reminded her that her likes were valid choices too. Although she did not need his stamp of approval, his support made it easier for her to decide to quit the job she did not like and to agree to help with designing the advertisement poster, on top of her workload.

I liked that she spent the night working on it with a smile on her face and without regrets, despite Wang Shan’s ‘good’ advice on prioritizing her work. Even the wise Wang Shan had nothing to argue about when she saw that Mo Mo was going for what would make her happy. And she did not waste time to continue working at the Accountancy job but quit and went for the Ori Advertising interview the next day. A woman of action!

  6. Growing Beautifully (GB)

I was amused that in these last 2 episodes we see the ‘good’ boy GWY resorting to multiple bald face lies to get to spend time with Mo Mo, or to get her to come back to his apartment, and stay on with him. His scientific brain had to come up with more creative excuses. Did he get better than the “I can’t make my bed, so you have to stay to help me” excuse, do you think?

I felt that what Wang Shan did to fulfill her end of the bargain with Fu Pei was thoughtless of GWY and her friend, Mo Mo. It was also strange that Mo Mo didn’t think to tell GWY that she was bringing home a friend. It ended up as Wang Shan barging into someone’s home without an invitation or permission, and bringing in an unwanted guest in FP as well.

I too thought that GWY’s pleasure at Mo Mo’s knowing where to find things in his home was a sign of how much he liked that she lived there, and that they were familiar and family-like already. Getting her to find the honey just rubbed in this pleasure!

  7. Yes, I’m not happy with Wang Shan one bit. But I’m ignoring her because she’s only a plot device.

She reminds me of Love O2O when Weiwei’s online game friend invited her to a dinner party to show her off and spite the other girls in their online community.

They have ulterior motives, and they threw their friends under the bus. In Wang Shan’s case, she’s an enabler. She thinks by playing the martyr, she can catch him on the rebound. ha!

  8. Another great post and thanks to @joominfan for those translations of GWY Google searches. Aww, he’s so sweet to look up how to help someone after a faile interview.
